Mindfulness-based interventions have gained popularity among elite athletes, but their effectiveness in enhancing archery performance has been inconsistent. This study examined the feasibility of a 12-week mindfulness flow program (MFP) specifically designed for the archers and assessed the effect of the MFP on shooting performance. Twelve members of the Hong Kong Archery Team voluntarily participated in the present study. Their shooting performance, anxiety, mindfulness, and flow state were assessed before and after the MFP intervention. The results showed that the MFP was highly feasible, with 100% attendance. The athletes highly enjoyed the MFP sessions (mean rating: 7.9/10). Improved shooting performance, increased mindfulness, and flow state levels, and reduced anxiety were also observed after the intervention. These findings suggest a positive reception from and potential benefits for athletes. However, it is suggested to conduct additional research using randomized controlled trials to explore the program's effects and applicability in enhancing sports performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During an archery competition, archers frequently fail to correctly adjust their bow's sight so that their arrow groups are centred on the target. Arrows are shot in ends of three or six, depending on the phase of the competition, and consequently each end provides very limited data on which to make sight adjustments, although at the conclusion of the competition it is usually obvious if an archer has succeeded in the task or not. This paper considers three sight optimisation processes with a view to minimise score loss both in ranking rounds and in matches. It is shown that archers should take a more aggressive rather than a less aggressive approach to sight movements, especially for the first end. Able Archer 83, a NATO nuclear exercise conducted in the fall of 1983, has been the subject of considerable debate in recent decades. While some analysts have argued that the superpowers came close to blows due to Soviet fears that the exercise was a ruse meant to disguise a NATO attack, revisionists have maintained that the danger associated with Able Archer 83 has been seriously overstated. In this article, the authors review the scholarship, take stock of the evidence, and discuss some of the challenges of studying nuclear history and close calls. They argue that further research is needed to determine how close of a nuclear call Able Archer 83 actually was and conclude that the case highlights the uncertainty inherent to nuclear policy making. ‘Reflexivity’, as used by Margaret Archer, means creative self‐mastery that enables individuals to evaluate their social situation and act purposively within it. People with complex health and social needs may be less able to reflect on their predicament and act to address it. Reflexivity is imperative in complex and changing social situations. The substantial widening of health inequities since the introduction of remote and digital modalities in health care has been well‐documented but inadequately theorised. In this article, we use Archer’s theory of fractured reflexivity to understand digital disparities in data from a 28‐month longitudinal ethnographic study of 12 UK general practices and a sample of in‐depth clinical cases from ‘Deep End’ practices serving highly deprived populations. Through four composite patient cases crafted to illustrate different dimensions of disadvantage, we show how adverse past experiences and structural inequities intersect with patients’ reflexive capacity to self‐advocate and act strategically. In some cases, staff were able to use creative workarounds to compensate for patients’ fractured reflexivity, but such actions were limited by workforce capacity and staff awareness. Unless a more systematic safety net is introduced and resourced, people with complex needs are likely to remain multiply disadvantaged by remote and digital health care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: This study focuses on the spontaneous lesions observed in a captive colony of geriatric Julia Creek dunnarts, an endangered carnivorous marsupial. Despite their conservation status, no prior research has focused on the conditions affecting captive individuals attaining senescence. We examined one wild and thirty-five captive-born, mostly elderly dunnarts that failed to reproduce over several breeding periods. From these, ten dunnarts had normal findings. Among females, the most common issue was cystic glandular hyperplasia (eight cases); cutaneous lesions were infrequent (two cases). Males showed testicular degeneration, aspermatogenesis, or atrophy (three cases). Cutaneous lesions compatible with epitheliotropic T cell lymphomas were observed in both sexes (five cases) and thus, an underlying oncogenic viral etiology is suspected. This is the first study that documents spontaneous diseases in aging Julia Creek dunnarts, shedding light on geriatric conditions within a conservation context. Julia Creek dunnarts are an endangered species of carnivorous marsupials and the focus of multiple conservation strategies involving significant resources such as captive breeding programs. Despite the relevance for conservation, no study to date has focused on evaluating geriatric diseases in dunnarts. This study describes the pathology findings in a group of one wild and thirty-five captive-born, mostly geriatric Julia Creek dunnarts that failed to produce offspring over multiple breeding periods. A total of 20 females and 16 males were submitted for a postmortem examination, with ages ranging from 9 to 42 and 12 to 42 months for females and males, respectively. Of these, 10 had unremarkable findings. The most common condition in females was cystic glandular hyperplasia (n = 8), typical of hormonal dysregulation profiles in senescence, particularly hyperestrogenism. Rarely, cutaneous disease represented by unidentified dermal round cell infiltrates was observed in females (n = 2). Primary reproductive hormonal dysregulation was also suspected in males diagnosed with testicular degeneration, aspermatogenesis and/or atrophy (n = 3). Cutaneous round cell infiltrates, possibly compatible with epitheliotropic lymphomas, were seen in males (n = 3), and 2/3 affected males also had concurrent testicular degeneration or atrophy, indicating male sex could be a predictor for lymphoid neoplasia in aged dunnarts, especially in individuals with concurrent testosterone-luteinizing hormone dysregulation as it occurs in gonadectomized animals. The role of an underlying viral etiology is also explored. This study is the first to describe major spontaneous diseases in endangered aged Julia Creek dunnarts, providing an important understanding of senescence and geriatric diseases within a conservation context. Margaret Archer addresses the fundamental question: does society make the human person or does the person make society? This question has gripped all social theory since the beginning of modernity and gave rise to the well-known agency vs structure debate. Archer proposes to overcome this debate by reformulating the problem within an innovative scheme (that of morpho-stasis/morpho-genesis) in which the human person mediates between action and social structure through her own personal reflexivity (internal conversation). The evaluation of this theory highlights the importance of personal reflexivity, but claims the relational character of reflexivity. Overall, the author expresses some reservations about the entire Archerian approach to the human person. The definition of reflexivity, as an individual mental activity, underestimates the role of relationships and social networks, with the risk of providing an individualizing rather than a personalized vision of social agents/actors. This is demonstrated by the fact that in her latest works, Archer also grants personality to sophisticated AI robots. The aim of this paper is to present the surgical technique of selective Bowman's layer transplantation as well as the results of the surgery in patients with trophic corneal ulcers. The methodology of the study included three eyes from three patients with neurotrophic corneal ulcers grafting with corneal Bowman's layer. Pre- and postoperative analyses of the anterior segment of the eye were based on optical coherence tomography and slit-lamp assessment. Postoperatively a gradual corneal stroma restoration and fast corneal epithelialization were noticed. Based on our observations, the stiff and firm structure of Bowman's layer is supposed to strengthen the corneal surface and maintain its shape. It acts also as an antipathogen and antitoxin corneal barrier. Application of this acellular corneal layer transplantation to cover trophic corneal ulcers is an interesting, modern and crucial method of neurotrophic keratitis treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the relationship between archery and aesthetics, developing two central claims. First, in order to deliver successful results, the archer should attend not only to efficiency, technique and equipment tuning but also to the aesthetic experience; second, archery shooting methods embody and express 'life-issue' statements and desires concerning our relationship with the world. Depending on the archer's shooting style, i.e. depending on the way in which a shot is executed and performed, the archer's 'sportive philosophy' is, so to speak, unfolded and made apparent. Specifically, I will argue that instinctive archery strives for flexibility and versatility toward the environment and with respect to one's own body, whereas non-instinctive approaches sharpen effectuality and results by flattening the surroundings and limiting one's own performative freedom. Exploring this idea, I will discuss the aesthetic underpinnings of archery, also showing in which ways different shooting methods lay the ground for irreducible aesthetic experiences of self-expression. A summary of the process of representing classroom practices using analog and digital instruments in the development of design exercises is presented, applied to the architecture program at the Universidad Antonio Nariño in the city of Ibagué. This guide aims to contrast the Bruce Archer method, structured in three phases: analytical, creative, and executive, specifically applied to the Advanced Continuity Workshop G-4 at the Universidad Antonio Nariño, 2019. Through a descriptive analysis, it was revealed how each phase of the Archer method was integrated into the development of creative competencies of the students in the design exercises, addressing the use of both analog and digital tools. This process allowed for the contrast of their educational experience, demonstrating the effectiveness and applicability of both types of instruments during the semester. Margaret Archer has contributed to defining the agenda of sociological debate in a decisive way, for decades. During expedition EMB-238 of RV EM BORGESE to the Fehmarn Belt (Baltic Sea, Germany) in 2020, specimens of a new species of the Rhizothrichidae Por (Crustacea, Copepoda, Harpacticoida) were found. Currently, Rhizothrichidae enclose two genera: Rhizothrix Sars and Tryphoema Monard. The assignment of the new species is based on the following commonly derived characters: the formation of a strong spinulose (sub)apical element on the last segment of the female A1, and the formation of a long brush seta on the last exopodal and endopodal segments of the P1. The new species could not be assigned to either Rhizothrix or Tryphoema because it lacks their autapomorphies but presents exclusive derived characters, including the absence of the abexopodal seta on the A2 allobasis, the possession of only one seta on the endopods of P2–P4, and the fusion of the female P5 exopod and baseoendopod. Therefore, it is assigned to a new genus. Besides the species description, its phylogenetic position in the Rhizothrichidae as well as its possible relationship with Rhizothrix and Tryphoema are discussed. Furthermore, the affiliation of the Rhizothrichidae with the Cletodoidea is justified on the basis of 17 apomorphies. A key to the rhizothrichid genera is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Margaret Archer, the grand old lady of British sociology, died on 21 May 2023 in Kenilworth (UK) at the age of 80 from pancreatic cancer. Within sociology, Margaret Archer was the most eminent representative of critical realism, a philosophical movement in the social sciences that is inspired by the work of Roy Bhaskar, who died in 2014. While critical realism provides the social ontology, Archer's morphogenetic/morphostatic (M/M) approach constitutes its methodological complement. In the last decade of her life, together with an interdisciplinary group of social scientists, Archer plumbed the developmental tendencies of late modern societies and wondered whether the acceleration of social change would ensue in the advent of the morphogenic society. Objectives: The Bell Beaker period witnessed the rise of individual inhumations with "wealthy" burial contexts containing archery‐related grave goods, leading archaeologists to label the individuals in these tombs as "archers." This study looks to (1) compare the skeletons from male "archer" burials with those from male "non‐archer" burials—those not having archery‐related grave goods—in order to assess a possible link between burial context and physical activity, and (2) apply a biomechanics profile to evaluate whether the individuals associated with these "archer" burials practiced specialized archer activity. Materials and Methods: The corpus (males only) included 46 "archers" and 40 "non‐archers" from Bell Beaker individual inhumations. Osteological data included measurements, scores of entheseal changes, and a diagnosis of certain pathologies. Data analyses involved visual observations, hypothesis tests, dimension reduction, and MANOVA, with approaches aimed at exploring the treatment of data missingness. Results: Measurement data revealed no differences between the two groups. Evaluations of entheseal changes found that "non‐archers" had consistently more instances of bone surface modifications than "archers." Individual assessments of specialized archer occupation identified 11 possible specialized archers. Discussion: These findings indicate a possible labor differentiation represented through the presence of a probably prestigious "archer" burial context. This suggests a link between grave good presence and labor, but not between a Bell Beaker archery occupation and an "archer" burial context. Quantifying the dynamical features of discrete tasks is essential to understanding athletic performance for many sports that are not repetitive or cyclical. We compared three dynamical features of the (i) bow hand, (ii) drawing hand, and (iii) center of mass during a single bow-draw movement between professional and neophyte archers: dispersion (convex hull volume of their phase portraits), persistence (tendency to continue a trend as per Hurst exponents), and regularity (sample entropy). Although differences in the two groups are expected due to their differences in skill, our results demonstrate we can quantify these differences. The center of mass of professional athletes exhibits tighter movements compared to neophyte archers (6.3 < 11.2 convex hull volume), which are nevertheless less persistent (0.82 < 0.86 Hurst exponent) and less regular (0.035 > 0.025 sample entropy). In particular, the movements of the bow hand and center of mass differed more between groups in Hurst exponent analysis, and the drawing hand and center of mass were more different in sample entropy analysis. This suggests tighter neuromuscular control over the more fluid dynamics of the movement that exhibits more active corrections that are more individualized. Our work, therefore, provides proof of principle of how well-established dynamical analysis techniques can be used to quantify the nature and features of neuromuscular expertise for discrete movements in elite athletes. Purpose. Archery, a sport based on individual performance, requires postural stability, concentration and the ability to cope with stress. The effect of stress on success, however, is not clear in the adolescent age group. The present study investigates the association between stress and trait anxiety levels and postural control and shooting performance in young adolescent archers. Methods. Included in the study were a total of 22 licensed archers (6 female; 16 male) aged between 11 and 14 who were evaluated using the 'Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3' and 'Trier Social Stress Test' (child version, arithmetic component) to measure their trait anxiety status and susceptibility to stress, respectively. Stress was measured based on the number of heartbeats per minute. An evaluation of static postural control was made using a pedobarography device before arrow release, with and without subjecting the archer to stress. To assess performance, 10 arrows were shot at a target 18 metres away, twice - before and after subjecting the participant to stress.. Results. Postural control showed no significant change under stress. However, the participants' trait anxiety status inversely correlated with shooting success. Post-stress shooting scores correlated with total ASI-3 score (r = -0.513; p = 0.021) and its social sub-group (r = -0.634; p = 0.003). Conclusions. A moderately inverse correlation can be noted between the trait anxiety state and shooting success in young adolescent archers subjected to stress. Background: The intensive physical regimen followed by throwers and archers can impose stress on the elbow and hand in particular positions, which may increase the risk of developing peripheral nerve disorders and symptoms like pain and numbness. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of forearm and elbow joint positions on ulnar nerve conduction velocity in throwers, archers, and non-athletes. Method: Total 34 subjects both males and females were included with body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m2. Nerve conduction study (NeuroStim NS2 EMG/NCV/EP System) was used for measuring ulnar nerve conduction velocity (NCV) across elbow joint at different angles (0° elbow extension, 45°, 90°, and 120° elbow flexion) with different forearm positions. Result: Repeated Measure Analysis of Variance (RMANOVA) revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in mean values of ulnar NCV at different angles, forearm positions & groups (p <.05). Conclusion: The forearm and elbow positions can have a significant impact on ulnar NCV, especially in athletes who perform repetitive upper limb motions. The yips – a phenomenon whereby skilled practitioners suddenly and inexplicably struggle with their performance – has been observed in many sports. With no consensus as to the origins of the yips, it is, for many, a chronic condition bringing an end to careers and hobbies alike. This paper turns its attention to 'target panic', a sport‐specific instantiation of the yips found amongst archers. By bringing empirical encounters with target panic into conversation with geographical literature on skill, this paper seeks to invite reconsideration as to how and where the yips manifest. Rather than focusing on whether the yips is psychological or physical in origin, ecological approaches to skill allow for us to understand the yips as stemming from the disruption of the more‐than‐human communicative links on which skilled ecologies are founded. The concept of disruption is used to understand how this breakdown operates. Disruption is seen to be a boundary creating or boundary affirming process which impedes the ability for different actors to attune to one another. By re‐interpreting the yips as a result of disruption and locating it between actors, rather than within them, this paper contributes to ongoing discussions about what it means to be (de)skilled in a disrupted world and presents new possibilities for methods to prevent and treat the yips. The yips – a phenomenon characterised by sudden loss of skill – occurs in many sports, yet no concrete explanation for it has been established. This paper resists attempts to situate the yips in either mind or body to instead locate it as being distributed across a skilled ecology. In doing so, it draws on negative geographies literatures to argue that the yips are a disruptive phenomenon which impedes the more‐than‐human communication necessary for successful skilled performance. The present study is an investigation of the information-structural notion of focus through the morphosyntax of focus structures in Mùwe Ké (Tibeto-Burman, Mugu, Nepal). The focus structures mainly involve the obligatory marking of actors with the otherwise-optional ergative marker -gane/-gadi: and a preferred immediately preverbal position, both of which are shown to correlate with the notion of focus. The research and analyses are based on a corpus of field data collected over three years in Nepal, including the Questionnaire on Information Structure (Skopeteas et al. 2006). Using historical and recent aerial photography and structure from motion (SfM) multiview stereo (MVS) techniques, we reconstruct the 1959 and 2018 ice surface topography and determine the geodetic mass balance of Bowman Glacier, a small mountain glacier on northern Ellesmere Island. This is combined with optical satellite imagery to reconstruct the evolution in extent of the glacier over six decades, and ground-penetrating radar measurements of ice thickness to estimate the remaining ice volume. Between 1959 and 2020, Bowman Glacier lost 78% of its extent (reducing from 2.75 to 0.61 km2), while average annual area loss rates have nearly tripled in the past two decades. Over the 1959–2018 period, glacier-wide ice-thickness change averaged −22.7 ± 4.7 m, corresponding to a mean specific annual mass balance of −347.0 ± 71.4 mm w.e. a−1. Projecting rates of area and volume change into the future indicates that the glacier will likely entirely disappear between 2030 and 2060. This study demonstrates the potential of SfM-MVS processing to generate elevation products from 1950/60s historical aerial photographs, and to extend observations of ice elevation and glacier volume change for the Canadian Arctic, prior to the satellite record. The experiment was to study the nutritional quality and production performance of alfalfa with different autumn dormancy grades in Shihezi area, to obtain excellent dormancy alfalfa varieties suitable for local planting. Ten alfalfa varieties with different autumn dormancy levels were selected as experimental materials. The nutritional quality, production index and overwintering rate of alfalfa in early flowering period were determined and evaluated comprehensively. The results showed that the first group of non-autumn dormancy and extreme non-autumn dormancy alfalfa, represented by Yumu No. 1, had excellent production performance and nutritional quality, but poor wintering ability. Semi-autumn dormancy alfalfa (Xinjiang Daye, Victoria and Archer) had strong wintering ability and good comprehensive performance. Autumn dormancy alfalfa (Zhaodong, Xinmu No. 2 and Qishi No. 2) had strong wintering ability, but its comprehensive performance was poor. The study indicates that considering the local climate and perennial characteristics of alfalfa, semi-autumn dormancy alfalfa (Xinjiang Daye, Victoria and Archer) with good comprehensive performance and strong wintering ability should be optimized. This article aimed to observe the scope of work on Anthony Giddens in the field of organizational studies in Portuguese, from 2010 to 2021, in four databases. As for the research assumption, it was established that there would be few contributions in those years, mainly due to Giddens' lack of methodological clarity. The authors used to explain the sociologist's vision were, initially, Giddens himself (1979, 1996, 2003). Subsequently, criticisms are presented through Mouzelis (1989), Archer (1982), and Stones (2005). As for the method, bibliometric research was used through 4 filters: (1st) Years from 2010 to 2021; (2nd) Areas of organizational studies - administration and sociology; (3rd) Jobs repeated twice or more; (4th) Studies with non-searchable characters. Thus, the results show that organizational studies focusing on Anthony Giddens have declined over the last few years and, in addition, it was found that they are more theoretical than empirical. An investigation was carried out from January 2021 to December 2022 to study the lichen flora of Khadimnagar National Park. The present paper deals with 10 new records of lichens, namely, Acanthothecis asprocarpa (A.W. Archer) A.W. Archer, Bacidia absistens (Nyl.) Arnold, Caloplaca cinnabarina (Ach.) Zahlbr., Coenogonium implexum Nyl., Dirinaria leopoldii (Stein) D. D. Awasthi, Echinoplaca campanulata Kalb & Vězda, Metamelanea umbonata Henssen, Pyrgillus javanicus (Mont. & Bosch) Nyl., Ramboldia blastidiata Kantvilas & Elix and Trypethelium ochroleucum (Eschw.)
