The Swedish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (SCND) fought the military's plans to acquire Swedish nuclear weapons and protested the nuclear arms race, 1961–1967. This article presents SCND's ideological orientation by focusing on temporalities. SCND saw the Second World War as a decisive event and tried to avert a crisis and a dystopia by manifesting remembrance of past nuclear detonations, and by representing a 'desperate man' who needed to act directly against nuclear weapons testing and research. As an opinion-forming force, SCND advocated international negotiations and rejected political initiatives regarding disarmament. Furthermore, SCND refused to take a position between West and East in the Cold War and SCND did not strive for a fundamental change of society, a utopia, which can be explained by SCND's critique of ideology and from its temporal orientation rooted in the present. Nevertheless, the rise of imperialist-critical internationalism led to internal ideological conflicts, and the Swedish Campaign dissolved when only one of the goals was achieved: when Sweden abandoned the plans for nuclear weapons. Some members insisted on continuing the campaign to fight against not least imperialism, and SCND's downfall in 1967 can be explained by its challenge to navigate an ideologically multifaceted landscape. China, the United States, and the European Union have spoken of a global competition surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI). There is widespread talk of an ‘AI Arms Race’. But what is the nature of this race? We argue that the arms race metaphor does not capture the dynamics of global competition in the AI sector. Instead, we propose the notion of a ‘geopolitical innovation race’ for technological leadership in a networked global economy. Based on an analysis of government documents, we find that actors (1) are open to both zero-sum and positive-sum approaches in AI development, (2) organise actor networks differently based on national innovation cultures, (3) prioritise economics and status next to security concerns, and (4) are open to how AI should be interpreted. Referring to the competitive race of AI research and development, the three technopoles perpetuate the geopoliticisation of innovation and intertwine security and economic interests. Background: Echolocating bats face an intense arms race with insect prey that can detect bat calls and initiate evasive maneuvers. Their high closing speeds and short biosonar ranges leave bats with only a few 100 ms between detection and capture, suggesting a reactive sensory-motor operation that might preclude tracking of escaping prey. Here we test this hypothesis using greater mouse-eared bats (Myotis myotis) as a model species. With high-resolution biologging tags, we recorded bats hunting aerial prey in the wild and we also collected data from trained conspecifics in the laboratory facing simulated prey escapes of various speeds and distances. Results: We show that wild bats employed flexible buzz durations during hunting. In the laboratory, such dynamic vocal responses were driven by moving targets, where faster and longer movements led to longer buzzes. During these buzzes, the bats engaged in acute vocal-motor tracking via increased call intervals within 240 ms of evasive prey maneuvers. Conclusions: Echolocating bats can track evasive prey via a fast vocal-motor feedback loop allowing them to expand their acoustic depth of field. This echo-guided sensory adjustment contributes to the hunting superiority of bats as the most formidable insectivorous predator of the night skies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

U.S.-China competition provides an opportunity to test the claims of proponents and challengers of the theory of the nuclear revolution (TNR). Drawing on original Chinese-language sources and secondary analysis, this article examines the views of China’s experts and its behavior in modernizing its nuclear posture to determine whether they accord with TNR or its challengers. It finds that there is little evidence to suggest that China is pursuing a competitive nuclear posture akin to that of the superpowers during the Cold War, although a gap has appeared between the views of China’s nuclear experts and the capabilities it is building. Catalysis and specifically autocatalysis are the quintessential building blocks of life. Yet, although autocatalytic networks are necessary, they are not sufficient for the emergence of life-like properties, such as replication and adaptation. The ultimate and potentially fatal threat faced by molecular replicators is parasitism; if the polymerase error rate exceeds a critical threshold, even the fittest molecular species will disappear. Here we have developed an autocatalytic RNA early life mathematical network model based on enzyme kinetics, specifically the steady-state approximation. We confirm previous models showing that these second-order autocatalytic cycles are sustainable, provided there is a sufficient nucleotide pool. However, molecular parasites become untenable unless they sequentially degenerate to hyperparasites (i.e. parasites of parasites). Parasite resistance–a parasite-specific host response decreasing parasite fitness–is acquired gradually, and eventually involves an increased binding affinity of hyperparasites for parasites. Our model is supported at three levels; firstly, ribozyme polymerases display Michaelis-Menten saturation kinetics and comply with the steady-state approximation. Secondly, ribozyme polymerases are capable of sustainable auto-amplification and of surmounting the fatal error threshold. Thirdly, with growing sequence divergence of host and parasite catalysts, the probability of self-binding is expected to increase and the trend towards cross-reactivity to diminish. Our model predicts that primordial host-RNA populations evolved via an arms race towards a host-parasite-hyperparasite catalyst trio that conferred parasite resistance within an RNA replicator niche. While molecular parasites have traditionally been viewed as a nuisance, our model argues for their integration into the host habitat rather than their separation. It adds another mechanism–with biochemical precision–by which parasitism can be tamed and offers an attractive explanation for the universal coexistence of catalyst trios within prokaryotes and the virosphere, heralding the birth of a primitive molecular immunity. Author summary: The quintessential components of life comprise a potent mixture of naturally occurring, but improbable chemical reactions (catalysis), and the arrangement of such accelerated chemical reactions into closed loops (autocatalytic sets). This is required but is not sufficient for such networks to self-propagate (amplification of the information carrier = host polymerization) and adapt (Darwinian evolution). As soon as self-propagation is attained, the next hurdle is parasitism. This typically involves shorter molecules (the products of replicative errors) that hitchhike the replicative potential of the host. They will invariably outcompete the regular amplification process, unless a solution is found. We have addressed this problem using a new model based on the mathematics of catalysis. It confirms previous studies demonstrating that autocatalytic sets become self-sustaining, assuming that a sufficient pool of molecular building blocks is available. However, molecular parasitism is pervasive and potentially fatal for both host and parasite. In our model, we allow these parasites to degenerate in a controlled fashion, giving rise to parasites of parasites (hyperparasites). As long as these hyperparasites acquire binding specificity for parasites, an attenuation of parasitism is observed. These parasite-hyperparasite cycles stabilize the host cycle, explaining why they are conserved, and why they are the likely reason behind the observation that all cellular hosts are associated with parasites (e.g. bacteria) and hyperparasites (e.g. viruses) across all kingdoms of life. This article presents a brief overview of the state-of-the-art in large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and discusses the difficulties that these technologies create for educators with regard to assessment. Making use of the 'arms race' metaphor, this article argues that there are no simple solutions to the 'AI problem'. Rather, this author shows that educators and universities will need to adopt a complex strategy consisting of solutions at four different levels of vulnerability: Ethical, pedagogic/didactic, technological and policy. Intensified international competition for sporting success has facilitated coaches' cross-national migration, which constitutes a space for coaches' career transitions and development. This paper examines elite coaches' international migration as part of coaching career transitions within the context of the global sporting arms race. Using a qualitative case study design, data were generated from documents and semistructured interviews with six South Korean coaches who had moved to Western nations to coach national teams in two Olympic sports. The analysis reveals an underlying mechanism of the coaches' international mobility: dual imbalances existing between the sending and receiving countries—one in the levels of sporting performance; and the other in the perceived levels of modernisation in coaching cultures and sports systems. The migration opportunities were created by the performance imbalance between the home nation and destinations amid the structural context of the global sporting arms race. However, equally important is the individuals' strategic initiative to seize the opportunities for their career development and mitigate the perceived modernisation imbalance in coaching practices. By highlighting coaches' agentic capacity to navigate their career pathways within the global context, this study contributes to the literature on both international coach migration and coaching transitions. This paper provides an in-depth examination of the latest machine learning (ML) methodologies applied to the detection and mitigation of zero-day exploits, which represent a critical vulnerability in cybersecurity. We discuss the evolution of machine learning techniques from basic statistical models to sophisticated deep learning frameworks and evaluate their effectiveness in identifying and addressing zero-day threats. The integration of ML with other cybersecurity mechanisms to develop adaptive, robust defense systems is also explored, alongside challenges such as data scarcity, false positives, and the constant arms race against cyber attackers. Emerging technologies are likely to have significant impacts on international security, particularly nuclear stability. A combination of these technologies could enable persistent surveillance, identification and tracking of mobile nuclear delivery platforms, such as submarines, mobile missile launchers, and bombers, weakening deterrence and catalyzing an arms race. At the same time, these technologies might enhance the survivability of nuclear arsenals, offering new ways to deceive adversaries and provide robust communication, attack warning, and navigation capabilities. We examine the relationship between healthcare competition and hospital quality that incorporates out-of-pocket expenses on medical supplies. The results show that when patients and insurance companies pay for medical supplies, hospital quality can go either direction as the market becomes competitive. Hospital quality is determined by market competition, medical service reimbursements, and low-quality medical supplies by insurance companies. Market competition will not increase hospital quality if medical supplies are paid out of pocket. When the insurance company pays for medical supplies, market competition will not lower hospital quality. French economic expertise developed significantly during the interwar period when economic issues, and particularly those resulting directly from World War I, became the overriding concern for Europe's democracies. Before the end of World War II, three major institutes of conjuncture had been created, all of them driven by the need for economic policy indicators. ISRES was established in 1933 by Charles Rist, the Institut Français de la Conjoncture was founded in 1938 by Alfred Sauvy, and ISEA was founded in 1944 by François Perroux. Not surprisingly, all three were working on productivity measures. From 1936, debate was focused on the issue of the forty-hour week and then moved to the context of the arms race and the preparation for an inevitable war. The war period resulted in shortages that required planning of production; and in the postwar period the focus was on plans for the reconstruction of France and then Europe more generally. All these periods generated demand for differentiated economic expertise in productivity. In 1946, the first French National Accounts were published alongside the establishment of the Commissariat Général au Plan and INSEE, which resulted in another distinct period. The concept of cognitive warfare is currently gaining ground in the policy discussion and in academic research as a way of conceptualizing the 'weaponization of the neurosciences'. Introducing the Science and Technology Studies-inspired concept of 'neuropolitical imaginaries' and assessing discussions on cognitive warfare launched by the NATO Innovation Hub in 2017, this article explores how the contemporary turn to the brain sciences in defense and security reimagines politics. The article argues that seeing the human mind as increasingly vulnerable to external interference redefines the nature of human agency by giving precedence to the skilful 'cartographer' employing neuroscientific techniques and methods for persuasion. This emerging vulnerability of the human mind reshapes security into a zero-sum game for 'cognitive superiority', making brain science scholars authorities in security. Finally, speaking to the literature on security expertise and science in security, the article argues that the envisaged arms race for cognitive superiority gives rise to a neurosecurity dilemma: as the neurosciences becomes entangled with security, neuroscientific practices simultaneously arise as a core vulnerability, making their work conditional upon compliance with security practices. The arms race between phages and their hosts has led to the development of phage anti-defence systems (ADSs) to combat bacterial defence systems. Following the growth in the number of discovered bacterial defence systems, the number of new phage ADSs is now beginning to parallel this rate of discovery. We describe the known repertoire of phage ADSs and group them based on molecular mechanisms of action. Computational approaches can harness large-scale sequencing and phage–host interaction data to expedite the discovery of new ADSs. The biological interplay between phages and bacteria has driven the evolution of phage anti-defence systems (ADSs), which evade bacterial defence mechanisms. These ADSs bind and inhibit host defence proteins, add covalent modifications and deactivate defence proteins, degrade or sequester signalling molecules utilised by host defence systems, synthesise and restore essential molecules depleted by bacterial defences, or add covalent modifications to phage molecules to avoid recognition. Overall, 145 phage ADSs have been characterised to date. These ADSs counteract 27 of the 152 different bacterial defence families, and we hypothesise that many more ADSs are yet to be discovered. We discuss high-throughput approaches (computational and experimental) which are indispensable for discovering new ADSs and the limitations of these approaches. A comprehensive characterisation of phage ADSs is critical for understanding phage–host interplay and developing clinical applications, such as treatment for multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. We investigated changes in physiology and mechanical properties of diatoms exposed to chemical cues released by copepods Pseudodiaptomus annandalei. Our results showed that the diatoms Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Cylindrotheca closterium, Thalassiosira weissflogii, and Amphora coffeaeformis exhibited elevated growth rates and a substantial 2‐ to 50‐fold increase in biogenic silica (BSi) content increase when exposed to the chemical cues except for Cyclotella sp. Atomic force microscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses revealed that diatom frustules exhibited a remarkable 3‐ to 10‐fold increase in modulus and a substantial 2‐ to 5‐fold increase in hardness when they received grazing signals. The increase in the proportion of condensed silicon in the frustules could be the major reason for the more mechanically robust cells. Our results indicate that diatoms simultaneously increase their growth rate and robustness when exposed to copepod chemical cues. The relationship between the nuclear arms race and strategic stability has been important for scholars, politicians, and journalists who have shown keen interest in what causes a state to augment its military power and its effects on its rivalries with other states. As emerging technologies continue to change the security calculus of the states, the arms race is on for investing in the development and acquisition of offensive and defensive technologies in South Asia. The Indian strategic cooperation with the technologically advanced countries and the increase in the defense budget confirm its military modernization while upsetting the delicacies of the conventional military balance in South Asia. This study gives a substantive background to the developments and technological advancements in the post overt nuclearization era (1998) in the context of complications posed by India's persistent animus dominandi to outpace Pakistan in an anarchic structure vis-à-vis its impact on strategic instability in South Asia by making a comprehensive analysis of an unending arms race for the maintenance of credible minimum deterrence. This study aims to investigate the relationship between military expenditures and geopolitical risk using the Panel Fourier Toda-Yamamoto Causality test over the 1993–2020 period. Considering structural changes, the findings reveal that geopolitical risk fluctuations in Colombia, India, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, and the USA affect military expenditures. Conversely, the results point out that for Chile, Israel, Russia, Taiwan, and the UK, military expenditures appear to cause geopolitical risk. This highlights that changes in military spending across nations trigger an arms race due to the perception of increased threat by neighbours and/or interest groups. In a nutshell, the results show a complex interplay between military expenditures and geopolitical risk, where changes in one can affect the other. Based upon this, policymakers must prioritize diplomacy, utilize international mediation/peacekeeping initiatives, develop military alliances, and commit to non-threatening military expenditures for regional stability. Western observers have endlessly debated the strategic implications of AUKUS. However, little attention has been paid to Chinese perspectives on AUKUS, despite the pact's implicit rationale to curb Beijing's perceived strategic ambitions. The article provides an objective and evidence‐based examination of thinking on AUKUS within the Chinese decision‐making community. The goal is threefold: first, to inform audiences outside China about its key concerns; second, to understand how these concerns are being constituted as narratives within China; and third, to highlight opportunities for improved dialogue to avoid policymaking communities remaining in self‐contained silos. Some of China's concerns about AUKUS are real and valid, and it is helpful to identify Beijing's perceived threats, which namely concern arms racing, nuclear risks, containment, and a return to a Cold War mentality. Recognizing these does not imply appeasement of China's growing assertiveness. The aim is to create opportunities for strategic dialogue and shape a more peaceful and predictable global system. Classical deterrence theory has its origins in the era of the Cold War and the nuclear arms race between the USA and the Soviet Union. Therefore, deterrence is mainly studied from the perspective of the superpowers. This study approaches deterrence from the less explored perspective of a small country by analysing academic deterrence literature and further deepening this perspective by means of a survey. As a result, the study produced a new view of how a small state can be positioned in modern deterrence theories, by introducing national and international enabling and preventive factors. The main findings of the research suggest that national enabling factors, such as a strong national defence and the resilience of the society, are important for a small state in terms of compensating for the deficit in influence in relation to superpowers. Limited options for building deterrence can be augmented by means of international enabling factors, such as military and political alliances. Deficits in terms of available military resources and international status could translate into national preventive factors, such as weakness in the eyes of the aggressor. This paper analyzed why South Korea has not joined the United States missile defense system for over 40 years. South Korea is geopolitically surrounded by powerful countries. The military technology of China, Japan, North Korea and Russia is outstanding. In particular, South Korea does not participate in the United States missile defense despite being constantly threatened by North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. This study focused on parts of Glenn H. Snyder's theory that received less attention in analyzing the reasons for South Korea's non-participation in missile defense in the ROK-US alliance. Snyder pointed out that powerful countries mainly fear being implicated in alliances and weak countries fear being abandoned by powerful countries. However, if we look at the case of South Korea's missile defense policy, we can see that even weak countries in alliances are strongly afraid of being involved. This study argues that not only powerful countries but also weak countries do not participate in missile defense for fear of being implicated. To analyze this, this study changed the four variables that Stephen M. Walt suggested as reasons for forming alliances into three. This study established three hypotheses using three variables changed by the author and derived that there was a causal relationship. It was proven by applying it to South Korea's missile defense case through a hypothesis using variables that modified the variables used in Walt's alliance theory. This study supplemented the lack of attention to existing international political theories and supported the argument with evidence. I looked at literature research, government records, interviews with key figures and secret and undisclosed Ministry of Foreign Affairs documents. How many dollars would the United States need to spend on its ballistic missile defense (BMD) for each dollar the attacker spends to launch land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) armed with nuclear warheads? A hypothetical scenario is analyzed in which the United States has a functioning BMD technology and enough interceptors to distribute them in a two-layer defense with the overall system efficiency of 90%, as targeted by U.S. war planners. It is assumed that the attacker has enough missiles to deliver a range between 500 and 6000 warheads to the continental United States. Results show that in the most optimistic case for the defender, with a very high individual interceptor kill effectiveness of 90% and with perfect decoy discrimination capability, the United States would need to spend on average 8 times more than the attacker, for a total cost between $60 billion and $500 billion. With a more realistic individual interceptor effectiveness of 50% and if the system is unable to discriminate against decoys, the United States would need to spend on average 70 times more, for a total cost between $430 billion and $5.3 trillion. In this study, the author examines the foreign policy of Y.V. Andropov and assesses the impact of his personal position on the Soviet-US and Sino-Soviet relations during his tenure as the leader of the Soviet Union. The author was guided by the principles of historicism, scientific objectivity, and reliance on sources. It is proved that Y.V. Andropov adopted the foreign policy of the USSR from the position of the “hawks” in the Soviet leadership, which were represented by D.F. Ustinov. According to such a position, foreign policy should be absolutely subordinated to the interests of national security, which can only be guaranteed by the superiority of both nuclear and conventional forces over potential adversaries. Military power should be at the forefront of foreign policy decisions. Therefore, no matter on the issue of Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) in Europe, or on the issue of the armed forces on the Sino-Soviet and Sino-Mongolian borders, regardless of the objective changes in the situation, Y.V. Andropov always maintained a tough position. Author proves that the Soviet leader persistently rejected the reasonable proposals of diplomats and was unwilling to make any concessions that contradicted the ideas of military supremacy. This primarily concerned the issue of the INF deployment on the territory of Eastern Europe, which was a key topic of discussion at the Geneva negotiations. As a result, the Soviet Union could not avoid being drawn into the new round of the arms race provoked by the U.S. President Ronald Reagan, one of the results of which was the deployment of the American INF in Western Europe. In the East, he missed the opportunity to improve relations with China, which had begun to reorient itself away from confrontation with the USSR to building a balance in relations with the United States and the Soviet Union and continued a pointless confrontation with it. The foreign policy heritage that Y.V. Andropov left to his successors was an isolated and tense external environment in which there was few freedom of action. In addition, the growth of military expenditures caused by his tough line on foreign affairs aggravated the stagnation and crisis in the social-economic development of the USSR.

The term ‘Arms Race’ describes the Cold War’s intricate geostrategic landscape, wherein the United States and Soviet Union were the principal contenders. The New Arms Race, in which China and the USA are major players, demonstrates the shifting dynamics of the global geostrategic landscape and symbolizes the current global geostrategic environment. This study, therefore, investigates the intricacies of the emerging Sino-U.S. arms race and how Xi Jinping's foreign policy and the Chinese dream of national rejuvenation influence China's military modernization. Considering China's recent military modernization, how has the US adapted its military modernization and strategic outlook to contain China? Furthermore, this study assesses President Trump's and Biden's diverse strategic outlooks in their approaches to China's military advancement and the geopolitical implications of the Sino-US Arms Race for global security and strategic stability. Moreover, this study highlights that a new bipolar world order analogous to the Cold War is emerging. The escalating New Arms Race will not only alter the regional balance of power but also encourage higher defense spending and strategic partnerships among like-minded nations, with consequences for the global arms control architecture. The paper presents evidence on the relationship concerning military spending among Southeast Mediterranean countries (Greece – Turkey, Israel – Egypt, Israel – Turkey) over the period 1962–2020. We account for the presence of nonlinearities in the bilateral relationships of defence spending by applying Threshold Autoregressive methodologies and utilize kink regression analysis to detect the existence of a country's military spending threshold that signals a threat to another country of the region. Our empirical results show: First, there is a nonlinear strategic interaction between the countries examined, in the sense that their defence spending policy is cointegrated. Second, there is no arms race among the countries examined, but only unilateral effects. Third, there is consistent evidence of a possible military spending equilibrium, in the absence of friction between the countries involved (peace threshold). Our findings have important policy implications as they indicate, first, that each country in the region should not determine its level of military spending considering only operational factors, but also considering the signaling of its military spending on its neighboring countries and, second, that there is space for peaceful solutions regarding disputes in the Southeast Mediterranean region. Obligate brood parasitism is a peculiar behaviour found in some bird species. The costs for their hosts can be high, generating selection for active defence strategies including foreign egg and chick rejection. Only one of these two rejection strategies seems to be expressed in any given host species, which in turn selects for mimicry in parasites only at one stage of the nesting cycle. Here, I review the cues used by hosts to recognise brood parasites in the nest and the behaviours to neutralise them, as well as counteradaptations found in parasites. Furthermore, I link these adaptations with theoretical and known processes of genetic transmission of the involved mimicry traits to the offspring. I suggest that the stage at which the parasite is recognised by the host can impose selection on the mating system of the parasite and increase the likelihood of speciation. When hosts discriminate against foreign eggs, interbreeding by male and female parasites reared by different hosts may impede speciation, but not the evolution of egg mimicry if inherited through the maternal line (via the W‐chromosome). When hosts discriminate against chicks, an effective mimetic phenotype requires autosomal (or Z‐chromosome) inheritance to allow expression in both male and female chicks, thus favouring assortative mating in the parasites, and potentially leading to speciation. To my knowledge, this review is the first to link host defence strategies with their potential consequences for speciation in brood parasites. Homing genetic elements are a form of selfish DNA that inserts into a specific target site in the genome and spreads through the population by a process of biased inheritance. Two well-known types of homing element, called inteins and homing introns, were discovered decades ago. In this review we describe WHO elements, a newly discovered type of homing element that constitutes a distinct third category but is rare, having been found only in a few yeast species so far. WHO elements are inferred to spread using the same molecular homing mechanism as inteins and introns: they encode a site-specific endonuclease that cleaves the genome at the target site, making a DNA break that is subsequently repaired by copying the element. For most WHO elements, the target site is in the glycolytic gene FBA1. WHO elements differ from inteins and homing introns in two fundamental ways: they do not interrupt their host gene (FBA1), and they occur in clusters. The clusters were formed by successive integrations of different WHO elements into the FBA1 locus, the result of an 'arms race' between the endonuclease and its target site. We also describe one family of WHO elements (WHO10) that is no longer specifically associated with the FBA1 locus and instead appears to have become transposable, inserting at random genomic sites in Torulaspora globosa with up to 26 copies per strain. While conflict pervades virtually every aspect of society, there have been relatively few crossovers between Regional Science and Peace Science. This paper pays tribute to Walter Isard, pioneer of peace science research, and Kieran Donaghy, who has contributed to research on arms race dynamics and macroeconomic stability. We review studies that examine the impact of (i) trade on conflict, (ii) the economy on militarized disputes, and (iii) conflict on economic development. The analysis develops a structural equation model (SEM) to test the hypotheses simultaneously using the Correlates of War project data. Consistent with the liberal proposition, we found that the pacifying effect of trade is robust across alternative SEM specifications. Controlling for standard explanatory variables, the SEM estimates reveal that the indirect impact of economic development on conflict mediated by trade is statistically significant at the 0.1-percent level. Trade is, therefore, a critical intervening variable that transforms conflict-inducing economic expansion into a pacifying influence on militarized disputes. The spatial version of the SEM confirms that democracies do not attack each other. While trade does not appear to have a local spillover effect on conflict, proximity to neighboring democracies does lead to fewer conflicts. The final hypothesis argues that conflict affects national economic performance, which Donaghy refuted in his 1995 Conflict Management and Peace Science paper. Consistent with Donaghy's finding, the estimates reject the claim that conflict disrupts economic stability. Plant resistance (R) genes play a crucial role in the detection of effector proteins secreted by pathogens, either directly or indirectly, as well as in the subsequent activation of downstream defence mechanisms. However, little is known about how R genes regulate the defence responses of conifers, particularly Pinus massoniana, against the destructive pine wood nematode (PWN; Bursaphelenchus xylophilus). Here, we isolated and characterised PmHs1pro‐1, a nematode‐resistance gene of P. massoniana, using bioinformatics, molecular biology, histochemistry and transgenesis. Tissue‐specific expressional pattern and localisation of PmHs1pro‐1 suggested that it was a crucial positive regulator in response to PWN attack in resistant P. massoniana. Meanwhile, overexpression of PmHs1pro‐1 was found to activate reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism‐related enzymes and the expressional level of their key genes, including superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase. In addition, we showed that PmHs1pro‐1 directly recognised the effector protein BxSCD1of PWN, and induced the ROS burst responding to PWN invasion in resistant P. massoniana. Our findings illustrated the molecular framework of R genes directly recognising the effector protein of pathology in pine, which offered a novel insight into the plant–pathogen arms race. Summary statement: We first identified and functionally characterised that PmHs1pro‐1 could directly recognise the effector protein BxSCD1, which consequently initiated the ROS burst to defend against pine wood nematode to prevent the withered appearance in the resistant Pinus massoniana. Bacteria have evolved many defenses against invading viruses (phage). Despite the many bacterial defenses and phage counterdefenses, in most environments, bacteria and phage coexist, with neither driving the other to extinction. How is coexistence realized in the context of the bacteria/phage arms race, and how are immune repertoire sizes determined in conditions of coexistence? Here we develop a simple mathematical model to consider the evolutionary and ecological dynamics of competing bacteria and phage with different immune/counterimmune repertoires. We find an ecologically stable fixed point exhibiting coexistence, in agreement with the experimental observation that each individual bacterium typically carries multiple defense systems, though fewer than the maximum number possible. However, in simulations, the populations typically remain dynamic, exhibiting chaotic fluctuations around this fixed point. These dynamics enable coexistence even when phage (predator) strains outnumber bacteria (prey) strains. We obtain quantitative predictions for the mean, amplitude, and timescale of these dynamics. Our results provide a framework for understanding the evolutionary and ecological dynamics of the bacteria/phage arms race and demonstrate how bacteria/phage coexistence can stably arise from the coevolution of bacterial defense systems and phage counterdefense systems. Three types of plant-insect interactions are identified on seeds from the lower Permian (Asselian) Shanxi and lower Shihhotse formations of the Taiyuan district, North China. This enhances the relatively meagre fossil record of seed predation in global late Paleozoic floras, adding the earliest record of granivory from Cathaysia. The dispersed seeds cannot be attributed with confidence to any particular plant group, but associated fossil leaves belong to a broad spectrum of plants, including Medullosales, Cycadales, Noeggerathiales, Gigantopteridales, Cordaitales, and Voltziales. Among 85 analysed seeds, six showed evidence of predation, referable to three damage types: DT074 and two new damage types that will be added to the forthcoming version of the fossil damage guide (DT274, DT430). These damage features indicate novel strategies of seed exploitation in the earliest Permian of China. The causal agents of the seed herbivory are difficult to resolve with certainty, but possible culprits include representatives of Palaeodictyopteroidea, although we cannot exclude other groups, such as Dictyoptera, Odonatoptera, Archaeorthoptera, Hemipteroidea or early holometabolan insects. The presence of damage features, together with a range of probable defensive structures (hairs, spines, apical horns, and thick integuments), suggests that an active arms race involving insects and plant reproductive structures was already well established by the early Permian. Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile parasitic sequences that have expanded within the host genome. It has been hypothesized that host organisms have expanded the Krüppel-associated box-containing zinc finger proteins (KRAB-ZFPs), which epigenetically suppress TEs, to counteract disorderly TE transpositions. This process is referred to as the evolutionary arms race. However, the extent to which this evolutionary arms race occurred across various TE families remains unclear. In the present study, we systematically explored the evolutionary arms race between TE families and human KRAB-ZFPs using public ChIP-seq data. We discovered and characterized new instances of evolutionary arms races with KRAB-ZFPs in endogenous retroviruses. Furthermore, we found that the regulatory landscape shaped by this arms race contributed to the gene regulatory networks. Antagonistic co-evolution can be asymmetric, where one species lags behind another. Asymmetry in a predator–prey context is expressed by the 'life–dinner principle', a classic informal model predicting that prey should be in some sense ahead in this arms race, since prey are running for their lives, while predators lag as they only run for their dinner. The model has undergone surprisingly little theoretical scrutiny. We derive analytical models that show coevolutionary outcomes do not always align with the life–dinner principle. Our results show that other important asymmetries can easily reverse the outcome, especially the rare-enemy principle: predators are usually outnumbered by their prey, sometimes substantially (trophic asymmetry), which can make selection on prey relatively weak. We additionally show that the antagonists typically exhibit different evolutionary responses to a situation where both predator and prey start out as equally fast runners. Although predators sometimes become so efficient that attacks always succeed, attack success often reaches a stable intermediate value. We conclude that the life–dinner principle has some validity as a metaphor, but its effect is of an 'all else being equal' type, which is surprisingly easily overridden by other features of the evolutionary dynamics. The advent of ChatGPT has sparked over a year of regulatory frenzy. Policymakers across jurisdictions have embarked on an AI regulatory "arms race," and worldwide researchers have begun devising a potpourri of regulatory schemes to handle the content risks posed by generative AI products as represented by ChatGPT. However, few existing studies have rigorously questioned the assumption that, if left unregulated, AI chatbot's output would inflict tangible, severe real harm on human affairs. Most researchers have overlooked the critical possibility that the information market itself can effectively mitigate these risks and, as a result, they tend to use regulatory tools to address the issue directly. This Article develops a yardstick for re-evaluating both AI-related content risks and corresponding regulatory proposals by focusing on interinformational competition among various outlets. The decades-long history of regulating information and communications technologies indicates that regulators tend to err too much on the side of caution and to put forward excessive regulatory measures when encountering the uncertainties brought about by new technologies. In fact, a trove of empirical evidence has demonstrated that market competition among information outlets can effectively mitigate many risks and that overreliance on direct regulatory tools is not only unnecessary but also detrimental. This Article argues that sufficient competition among chatbots and other information outlets in the information marketplace can sufficiently mitigate and even resolve some content risks posed by generative AI technologies. This may render certain loudly advocated but not well-tailored regulatory strategies--like mandatory prohibitions, licensure, curation of datasets, and notice-and-response regimes--unnecessary and even toxic to desirable competition and innovation throughout the AI industry. For privacy disclosure, copyright infringement, and any other risks that the information market might fail to satisfactorily address, proportionately designed regulatory tools can help to ensure a healthy environment for the informational marketplace and to serve the long-term interests of the public. Ultimately, the ideas that I advance in this Article should pour some muchneeded cold water on the regulatory frenzy over generative AI and steer the issue back to a rational track. Despite the end of the Cold War, nuclear weapons remain an important issue in international relations, where efforts and cooperation worldwide have been reported toward the conceptualization of the "global nuclear order" for the purposes of mitigating nuclear dangers, inhibiting arms races, preventing the continuous spread of nuclear weapons to non-nuclear-weapons states (NNWS), as well as creating conditions for the elimination of nuclear weapons. Hence, the objective of this research paper concerns to scrutinize the effectiveness of the global nuclear order through the legal perspective of international law. For that matter, the research methods adopted by this research paper include comparative international approaches by providing a legal commentary in regards to the nuclear policies and doctrines of the nine nuclear-weapons states (NWS) currently in possession of nuclear weapons. They are classified in three main categories: (1) recognized NWS (Russia, the U.S., the U.K., France and China), (2) states declaring possession of nuclear weapons (India, Pakistan and North Korea) and (3) states indicated to possess nuclear weapons (Israel). The results obtained from this research paper implicate the clash between contrasting nuclear-related objectives of different political backgrounds demonstrating the potential to increase the risk of nuclear escalation threatening international peace and security. Space has been identified as the next warfighting domain. With tensions simmering between the great spacefaring nations amid a space arms race, or at the very least a race for superior space technology, this article will examine such tensions through the lens of the security dilemma. Do the technology escalations between the great space powers and dual-use space technologies make space conflict inevitable? The United States, China, and Russia continue to develop advanced counterspace capabilities with the ability to target other space systems and satellites. Given the nature of states to maximize their own security amid uncertainty in space, physical conflict will become inevitable at the individual satellite level motivated by uncertainty and insecurity. The incessant arms race between viruses and hosts has led to numerous evolutionary innovations that shape life’s evolution. During this process, the interactions between viral receptors and viruses have garnered significant interest since viral receptors are cell surface proteins exploited by viruses to initiate infection. Our study sheds light on the arms race between the MDA5 receptor and 5’ppp-RNA virus in a lower vertebrate fish, Miichthys miiuy. Firstly, the frequent and independent loss events of RIG-I in vertebrates prompted us to search for alternative immune substitutes, with homology-dependent genetic compensation response (HDGCR) being the main pathway. Our further analysis suggested that MDA5 of M. miiuy and Gallus gallus, the homolog of RIG-I, can replace RIG-I in recognizing 5’ppp-RNA virus, which may lead to redundancy of RIG-I and loss from the species genome during evolution. Secondly, as an adversarial strategy, 5’ppp-RNA SCRV can utilize the m6A methylation mechanism to degrade MDA5 and weaken its antiviral immune ability, thus promoting its own replication and immune evasion. In summary, our study provides a snapshot into the interaction and coevolution between vertebrate and virus, offering valuable perspectives on the ecological and evolutionary factors that contribute to the diversity of the immune system. Holobionts are highly organized assemblages of eukaryotic hosts, cellular microbial symbionts, and viruses, whose interactions and evolution involve complex biological processes. It is largely unknown which specific determinants drive similarity or individuality in genetic diversity between holobionts. Here, we combine short- and long-read sequencing and DNA-proximity-linkage technologies to investigate intraspecific diversity of the microbiomes, including host-resolved viruses, in individuals of a model marine sponge. We find strong impacts of the sponge host and the cellular hosts of viruses on strain-level organization of the holobiont, whereas substantial overlap in nucleotide diversity between holobionts suggests frequent exchanges of microbial cells and viruses at intrastrain level in the local sponge population. Immune-evasive arms races likely restricted virus-host co-evolution at the intrastrain level, generated holobiont-specific genome variations, and linked virus-host genetics through recombination. Our work shows that a decoupling of strain- and intrastrain-level interactions is a key factor in the genetic diversification of holobionts. Marine host-associated microbiomes retain a tremendous pool of genetic diversity, which is key to the health of marine ecosystems. Research has long aimed to identify the effects of international sporting success or event hostship on nations. Overall findings suggest that tangible benefits are marginal at best. Still, some studies find that sport may have significant intangible effects, such as bolstering (short-term) feelings of national pride or happiness. Following this strand of research, the present research note asks whether international sporting success and/or hostship affects people’s willingness to fight for their country. The connection between sport and international conflict is a plausible one, which scholars have debated for decades. Yet, this is also an issue that is underexplored, especially empirically. To expand on existing research, we analyse time-series cross-sectional survey data. The output from our estimations suggests that citizens’ willingness to fight decreases slightly when their country is hosting a major sport event. Similar effects do not apply to sporting success, even if additional analysis suggests a context-dependent positive relationship. To form a future research agenda, our approach and results are discussed to invite new and alternative research perspectives to improve the understanding of the relationship between sport and (the absence of) conflict. Mutualisms constitute a diverse class of ecologically important interactions, yet their ecological and evolutionary stability remain topics of debate in coevolutionary theory. Recent theoretical and empirical work has suggested that coevolutionary arms races may be involved in the maintenance of mutualistic interactions, sustaining mutually beneficial outcomes for interacting species while producing exaggerated traits. Here we present an individual-based model that evaluates how asynchronous life histories—that is, partners with different average lifespans—change the dynamics of trait coevolution, the expected fitness outcomes for species involved, and the dynamics of selection differentials across time for each species. Results indicate that a longer-lived mutualist will consistently "lose" an otherwise balanced coevolutionary arms race, being outpaced in both the mean trait value and fitness outcome compared with a shorter-lived partner. Furthermore, linear selection differentials on mutualistic traits become increasingly divergent as life histories become increasingly asynchronous, with the longer-lived species experiencing persistent directional selection and the shorter-lived species experiencing weaker, more inconsistent selection. These results suggest that asynchronous life histories can complicate the maintenance of mutualistic interactions via coevolutionary arms races and that detecting coevolution via selection differentials may be difficult when life histories are sufficiently divergent. The New Arms Race encapsulates a dynamic geopolitical competition characterized by escalating military capabilities and strategic posturing between the U.S and China. Amidst the intensifying Sino-US arms race, the objective of this research is to examine the trends and patterns of Sino-US defense spending's (2010-2022) to analyze the evolving military competition's strategic, economic and social implications, contributing to the discourse on global security and stability. Data from reputable sources like SIPRI, IISS, plus official budget reports and defense White-Paper's inform the analysis. Using a mix-method approach, quantitative data is descriptively presented to highlight trends, patterns, and significant changes over time. Plus, qualitative analysis is conducted to interpret the implications of these expenses, drawing on International Relation's theories and expert opinions to assess how shifts in military spending influences power dynamics, alliances, and conflicts? The results show that, the global military expenditures surpassed $2240 billion. China's defense spending has seen a 29-year consecutive increase, while the US maintains its top spender status, propelled by ongoing modernization efforts and diverse geopolitical strategies. This study is Grounded in the "Security Dilemma" framework, assumes that potential enemies would view a country's attempts to strengthen its security as a threat, setting off a cycle of action and reaction that deepens mutual suspicions and contributes to the potential for an arms race. Due to the Sino-US ongoing military modernization plans and diverse geopolitical strategies, it is suggested that this tendency will persist in the foreseeable future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to the steps-to-war theory, the probability of war between two states rises as the involved states take four distinct steps—namely, initiate a territorial disagreement, enter a rivalry relationship, secure defensive allies, and initiate an arms race with one another. Our study explores the relationships between these four steps in greater detail. In particular, we ask whether the steps to war might unfold in a predictable (modal) sequence. After demonstrating that the theory contains the elements needed to think about the steps to war as a sequence of events, we theorize a modal steps-to-war sequence and derive a series of predictions about it. We then evaluate these predictions through path analysis (i.e. a structural equation model). The results not only confirm the existence of a modal sequence, but also overwhelmingly support the steps-to-war theory's predictions, some of which we formalize and investigate for the first time. Most notably, we uncover evidence that territorial disagreements function as an underlying cause of war that drives the entire steps-to-war process. Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes (SMC) complexes are an evolutionary conserved protein family. In most eukaryotes, three SMC complexes have been characterized, as follows: cohesin, condensin, and SMC5/6 complexes. These complexes are involved in a plethora of functions, and defects in SMC genes can lead to an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities, infertility, and cancer. To investigate the evolution of SMC complex genes in mammals, we analyzed their selective patterns in an extended phylogeny. Signals of positive selection were identified for condensin NCAPG, for two SMC5/6 complex genes (SMC5 and NSMCE4A), and for all cohesin genes with almost exclusive meiotic expression (RAD21L1, REC8, SMC1B, and STAG3). For the latter, evolutionary rates correlate with expression during female meiosis, and most positively selected sites fall in intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs). Our results support growing evidence that IDRs are fast evolving, and that they most likely contribute to adaptation through modulation of phase separation. We suggest that the natural selection signals identified in SMC complexes may be the result of different selective pressures: a host-pathogen arms race in the condensin and SMC5/6 complexes, and an intragenomic conflict for meiotic cohesin genes that is similar to that described for centromeres and telomeres. There is an ongoing arms race intensifying today between Algeria and Morocco. The article examines the root causes of this arms race, namely, its links to the Western Sahara Conflict. The article focuses not only on the strains this conflict has caused in the diplomatic relations between the two neighbouring Maghrebi states but also on the increase in arms expenditures by both states. This paper sought to highlight and discuss the issues and challenges surrounding the resolution of the ongoing SAF and RSF conflict in Sudan. The preferred theoretical framework for the study is Power Theory (PT). Documentary research design which involves extensive search and extraction of data from extant records and documents is adopted for the methodology. The study relies on secondary data sourced from textbooks, scholarly journals, communiqué of international organizations, as well as other relevant literature from the internet. The findings reveal that demilitarization of the polity, containment of the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, management of foreign interest and their internal alignment, management of humanitarian challenges, and checkmating massive human rights' abuses are the issues and challenges surrounding the resolution of the conflict. As the resident Foreign Office expert on air disarmament during the World Disarmament Conference, Allen Leeper was at the forefront of a campaign for the elimination of military aircraft as a radical bid to address German claims to equality and French demands for security. His motivations derived from a deep-seated fear that legitimising a German air force posed an unacceptable risk to European stability by provoking an all-out arms race, heightening continental tensions and raising the spectre of war. But Leeper's sweeping solution for military aircraft, with its intertwined repercussions for civil aviation, fell victim to an increasingly truculent government in Berlin that refused to delay equality, claimed substantial increases in German military strength and boosted defence spending while surreptitiously rearming behind the scenes. In these altered circumstances, Leeper abandoned disarmament as a diplomatic tool for treating the Franco-German question and, instead, resorted to other traditional methods for ensuring continental stability. In doing so, he displayed the strengths of the 'world leadership' school of foreign-policy making that placed a premium on Britain's active engagement in great power politics to uphold its position as the pre-eminent global power. The United States emerged as a naval competitor of Great Britain after the First World War. American naval ambitions exasperated Winston Churchill, who saw this challenge threatening Britain's position as the world's leading sea power. Faced by America's growing economy and navy, Churchill lamented Britain's decline as a world power. He confided to his wife Clementine: 'Poor old England – she is being slowly but surely forced into the shade'. Despite America's undoubted economic strength, Churchill was determined that Britain stay ahead of the United States in the naval arms race. My article examines Churchill's views about America's growing naval power and Britain's ability to compete against the United States. Examining Churchill's views in this period provides an opportunity to explore the question of how the leading world power responded to a rising international great-power challenger. Coevolution is often found in parasite–host interactions, but has not yet been described for hemiparasitic plants and their hosts. Root hemiparasites like Rhinanthus alectorolophus perform photosynthesis but also parasitize other plant species, some of which (e.g. Plantago lanceolata) may defend themselves against parasite attack by blocking the haustoria of the parasites. We grew seedlings of the hemiparasite R. alectorolophus and the potential host P. lanceolata from seven grassland sites in a factorial design. To detect differences in host defence, we also included hosts from two 'naïve' populations from regions where the parasite does not occur. R. alectorolophus grew consistently larger and had higher fitness with sympatric than with allopatric hosts, suggesting parasite adaptation to local host populations. Moreover, R. alectorolophus remained smallest with allopatric hosts from the same region and reached intermediate sizes with allopatric hosts from other regions or naïve hosts, suggesting host adaptation to parasites at the regional scale. Parasite presence reduced the size of the host plants already after four weeks, but only that of hosts with 'experience' of the parasite, suggesting an early host response. Follow‐up experiments confirmed that parasites attach to hosts already after four weeks and hosts respond by changing belowground allocation patterns. However, parasite roots did not preferentially grow towards sympatric hosts. Our results suggest that local adaptation to hosts can occur even in generalist parasites and does not require specialization on individual hosts.
