Im Heiligtum von Olympia befand sich das wohl berühmteste Götterbild der Antike, die von Phidias gefertigte goldelfenbeinerne Kolossalstatue des Zeus. Dieses Werk soll, wie eine byzantinische Quelle behauptet, in der Spätantike nach Konstantinopel verfrachtet worden sein, um im dortigen Anwesen des reichen Kämmerers Lausos bestaunt zu werden. Obwohl in der bisherigen Forschung kaum Zweifel an Demontage, Überführung und Neuaufstellung des Zeusbilds bestehen, stellen sich aus verschiedenen Gründen Fragen zur Wahrscheinlichkeit eines solchen Szenarios: Hatte sich die goldelfenbeinerne Statue bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt in ihrem Tempel erhalten? War man in der Lage, ein derart fragiles Bildwerk zu demontieren und über eine weite Strecke zu transportieren? Hatte man überhaupt das Recht dazu? Vor allem aber: Wie vertrauenswürdig ist die schriftliche Überlieferung, die uns von der Überführung berichtet? Ziel dieser Untersuchung ist es, diesen Fragen nachzugehen und deren Beantwortung in einen größeren Kontext zu stellen, in dem die Bedeutung des Bildhauers Phidias in der ausgehenden Antike beleuchtet wird.

New insights on the reception of Etruscan antiquity in the modernist period.“L’Étrurie est à la mode”, French archaeologist Salomon Reinach bluntly stated in 1927. Since the beginning of the nineteenth century, Etruria had not only been attracting the attention of archaeologists and specialists of all sorts, but it had also been a fascinating and, in some cases, captivating destination for poets, novelists, painters and sculptors from all over Europe. This volume deals with the impact of the constantly expanding knowledge on the Etruscans and their mysterious civilisation on Italian, French, English, and German literature, arts and culture, with particular regard to the modernist period (1890–1950). "The ancient Buddhist art of Gandhāra was rediscovered from the 1830s and 1840s onwards in what would become the North-West Frontier of British India. By the end of the century an abundance of sculptures had been accumulated by European soldiers and officials, which constituted the foundations for a new field of scholarship and internationally celebrated museum collections. Both then and since, the understanding of Gandhāran art has been impeded by gaps in documentation, haphazard excavation, forgery, and smuggling of antiquities. Consequently, the study of Gandhāran archaeology often involves the evaluation and piecing together of fragmentary clues. In more subtle ways, however, the modern view of Gandhāran art has been shaped by the significance accorded to it by different observers over the past century and a half. Conceived in the imperial context of the late nineteenth century as ‘Graeco-Buddhist’ art – a hybrid of Asian religion and Mediterranean artistic form – Gandhāran art has been invested with various meanings since then, both in and beyond the academic sphere. Its puzzling links to the classical world of Greece and Rome have been explained from different perspectives, informed both by evolving perceptions of the evidence and by modern circumstances. From the archaeologists and smugglers of the Raj to the museums of post-partition Pakistan and India, from coin-forgers and contraband to modern Buddhism and contemporary art, this fourth volume of the Classical Art Research Centre’s Gandhāra Connections project presents the most recent research on the factors that mediate our encounter with Gandhāran art."

“Although many of the iconographic traditions in Byzantine art formed in the early centuries of Christianity, they were not petrified within a time warp. Subtle changes and refinements in Byzantine theology did find reflection in changes to the iconographic and stylistic conventions of Byzantine art. This is a brilliant and innovative book in which Dr Anita Strezova argues that a religious movement called Hesychasm, especially as espoused by the great Athonite monk St Gregory Palamas, had a profound impact on the iconography and style of Byzantine art, including that of the Slav diaspora, of the late Byzantine period. While many have been attracted to speculate on such a connection, none until now has embarked on proving such a nexus. The main stumbling blocks have included the need for a comprehensive knowledge of Byzantine theology; a training in art history, especially iconological, semiotic and formalist methodologies; extensive fieldwork in Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Turkey and Russia, and a working knowledge of Greek, Old Church Slavonic, Macedonian, Russian, Serbian, Latin as well as several modern European languages, French, German, Russian and Italian. Since the 5th century b. c., archaistic figures were used as a pillar for the statues of Aphrodite and later sometimes also for other gods. The question of design and interpretation is topic of this work. The characteristics of gods were always shown in their body image and posture. To that effect Aphrodite was pictured in a casual and sensual way with a very feminine body shape. The archaistic pillar could be a way to show that nevertheless Aphrodite was a venerable goddess.

Überlieferte Originalstelen mit Inschriften der großen Könige Sargon und Narām-Sîn von Akkade, die im 23. Jahrhundert v. Chr. als erste ein Weltreich eroberten, sowie mündlich tradierte Sagen haben diesen beiden Königen einen herausragenden Stellenwert in der historischen Erinnerung der Babylonier und Assyrer verschafft. Dies führte zu einer Reihe erzählender Werke, die zum Teil wie echte Heldenlieder gestaltet sind, zum Teil sich aber auch als authentische Königsinschriften gebärden. Das Verständnis dieser heterogenen Textgruppe in verschiedenen Fragerichtungen zu erhellen, ist das Ziel vorliegender Studie. Zu den Fragestellungen gehören die Bestimmung der Gattungen, denen die Texte angehören, und ihre Scheidung von den authentischen Königsinschriften, die durch das Merkmal der Fiktionalität gekennzeichnet ist. Des Weiteren soll die zum Teil hohe literarische Qualität dieser Werke herausgearbeitet werden. Schließlich wird untersucht, inwiefern sich an diesen Werken die Mechanismen und Bedingungen ihrer Überlieferung ablesen lassen, ob sie Spuren eines mündlichen Sargon- und Narām-Sîn-Sagenschatzes aufweisen und welche literarischen Funktionen sie erfüllten. Musik ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil geistig-kulturellen Erbes moderner wie antiker Hochkulturen. Die Musik Mesopotamiens und benachbarter Gebiete ist gerade im letzten Jahrzehnt immer mehr in den Fokus wissenschaftlichen Interesses gerückt worden. Es faszinieren in gleicher Weise klanglich-schöpferische Spezifika wie auch inhaltlich-funktionale und strukturelle Hintergründe zur Ausführung von Musik. Die Tätigkeitsfelder von Musikern, ihr Einflussbereich an Tempel oder Palast aber auch ihr öffentliches Ansehen sind in Hunderten von Briefen, Urkunden sowie literarischen Texten dokumentiert. Zudem ist uns auch der Wortlaut von Liedern und Gesängen erhalten geblieben, die professionelle Sänger zu unterschiedlichen Anlässen zu Gehör brachten. Zum Genuss ihrer hoch spezialisierten Vortragskunst kamen vor allem Götter und Könige, deren Wohlwollen sie mit ihrem süßen Gesang zu sichern wussten. Die vorliegende Studie setzt den Schwerpunkt in ebendiesem Bereich an, wobei der zeitliche und geographische Rahmen durch das Babylonien des 19. bis 16. Jahrhunderts v.Chr., der altbabylonischen Zeit gebildet wird. Die überwiegend aus schriftlichen Quellen gewonnenen Daten zeichnen ein genaues Bild von der institutionellen wie auch privaten Organisation von Musik. Auch wenn die originalen Musikklänge der Babylonier für immer verklungen sind, so werden doch bedeutende Details zur vokalen Aufführungspraxis bekannt, die eine Annäherung an den Ursprung möglich machen. This book addresses the issue of the potential economic significance of the artistic heritage in an art city – more specifically Florence – taking as a concrete example for the purpose of scientific research the figure of the “artistic restorer” in the dual garb of economic agent and environmental and cultural resource for the city. The empirical study of the private firms working in this sector located in the Florence area is accompanied and introduced by a broad analysis of the policies for protection and enhancement of the cultural assets, and of the economic, non-economic and institutional agents involved in the same.
