The ZBW - Leibniz Information Centre for Economics has opened a new New Work area in its library, which offers a modern working environment with a view of the Kiel Fjord. The Bavarian State Library has acquired the archive of photojournalist Dieter Bauer, which contains important contemporary documents from the years 1980 to 2010. The Bavarian State Library has also taken over responsibility for Hungary and parts of Finno-Ugric studies within the framework of the network of specialized information services. The Bavarian State Library will receive the estate of German poet Eugen Roth. The Federal Cultural Foundation will provide up to 7.5 million euros for the "Lokal - Program for Culture and Engagement" program from 2024 to 2031 to support art and cultural associations as well as other institutions. Part of Plato's complaint about the cognitive status of art cites the pollution of aesthetic cognition by the affective side of our natures. Schopenhauer, by contrast, takes aesthetic cognition to transcend (some of) the limitations of everyday cognition precisely because in it agents become the " pure, will-less subject of cognition " (WWR I 219). On the orthodox reading of his later philosophy, Nietzsche scorns Plato and Schopenhauer's association of the value of art with its truthfulness. I challenge the orthodox reading and argue that one strand of art's value is its penetrative cognitive power. In contrast to Schopenhauer, Nietzsche understands this cognitive power to result from the embracing and exploitation of the affects in the artistic process rather than their extirpation. This paper examines the questions of cultural identity in the surrealist related translation practices led by the China Independent Fine Arts Association (CIFAA) around 1935. It was the first time in the history of modern Chinese art that a group of artists translated 'surrealism' together and that an art association independently translated a modern Western art genre into China. Accordingly, the CIFAA's work evidences that translation has played a vital role in the modernization of Chinese art. In this translation movement, the young artists-as-translators expressed their pioneering art concepts through translation, expressing their desire to be both 'reformers' of Chinese art and 'mediators' of Chinese and Western modern art. As reformers, the artists attempted to innovate Chinese art by introducing surrealism, while as mediators they sought to reconcile the contradiction between their desire for innovation and the mainstream left-wing Chinese expectations of realistic art by adding 'realism' to the Chinese semantic meaning of 'surrealism'. This paper thus argues that the CIFAA's translation of surrealism reflects a complex relationship between translation and the artists' cultural identity, which ultimately conceptualizing an unprecedented 'Chinese surrealism' that is very different from the original Western surrealism. This article analyzes the interactions of artists, Mexico's Communist Party, or the Partido Comunista Mexicano (PCM), and the Mexican state within the context of Mexico's vibrant post-revolutionary era. Although during these early years the Party's official membership numbers remained relatively minimal, this article argues that the extraordinary influence of Mexico's creative participants on the politics of the period was significant. During the 1920s the PCM derived a great deal of prestige from its association with art and the muralists, including Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, and as a result Mexico's lively political and artistic scene attracted the attention of writers, photographers, artists, and intellectuals from all over the world. Art and politics intertwined as artists played major roles in political affairs, and politicians appropriated the arts to transmit the "official" national history. Indeed, during these exhilarating years, the artists and the PCM built a powerful coalition, and one whose influence endured long beyond the 1920s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the discourse of abstraction among Beijing intellectuals in response to the artist Wu Guanzhong's 吴冠中 (1919–2010) published essays on formal and abstract beauty from 1979 and 1980. By introducing Wu through a new critical lens that emphasizes his writings and institutional critique, the author addresses how abstraction was repurposed for early post‐Mao China. Where institutional elites in Beijing regarded painterly abstraction with unease, owing to its continued associations with the bourgeois‐capitalist art worlds of Paris and New York, this article shows how Wu performed an aesthetic intervention through writing, utilizing scientism and Maoist logic to filter abstraction through the still‐hegemonic language of radical materialism, which allowed abstraction to take hold as a renewed term of engagement in the early post‐Mao art world by 1983. For a 2022 panel presentation for the National Art Education Association, five art educators who were originally connected within a cohort of graduate students shared the significance of how play invites working together, creates intentional community, and informs and sustains their art, teaching, and research practices. This article features the transcript of the panel discussion, which examines their experiences of playing games together resulting in problematizing issues of access, articulating themes of relationality, and emphasizing the seriousness of play. Background: Substance abuse among Human Immune Deficiency Virus-positive patients causes depression, carelessness, and anxiety, which in common results in a decrease in adherence to antiretroviral treatment. The purpose of the study is to assess the prevalence of substance abuse and its association with adherence to ART drugs. Methods: The current study was conducted at three hospitals (Hiwot Fana Comprehensive University Hospital, Dillchora Hospital, and Jugal Hospital) located in East Ethiopia. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the association of independent variables with the dependent variables. Results: In this study, 119 HIV-positive pregnant patients were included. While 74.8% of the patients were adherent to their medication, the remaining 25.2% were nonadherent. The major reasons for nonadherence to ART medications prescribed were getting better (73.3%) and finishing medication (16.7%). Moreover, 96 (80.7%) respondents abused alcohol while 36 (30.3%) and 75 (35.6%) abused opioids and cigarette smoking, respectively. Mothers who abused alcohol were 38.1 times more likely to be nonadherent to ART medications for PMTCT [AOR = 38.1% CI: 21.47-56.54] compared to their counterparts. Additionally, mothers who abuse opioids were 19 times more likely to be nonadherent to ART treatment medication [AOR = 19, 95% CI: 2.46-19.46] than their counterparts. Furthermore, mothers who smoked cigarettes were 43.1 more likely to be nonadherent [AOR = 43.19, 95% CI: 8.42-187.84] than nonsmokers. Unemployment was also found to be associated with nonadherence to ART medication to PMTCT of HIV [AOR = 5.4, 95% CI: 2.8-5.7]. Smoking of marijuana/cannabis/hashish was not significantly associated with nonadherence to ART [AOR = 0.22, 95% CI: 0.084-0.355]. Conclusion: Abuse of alcohol, cigarette smoking, abuse of opioids, and joblessness were found to be significantly associated with nonadherence to ART medications prescribed to PMCT of HIV. STUDY QUESTION In children affected by rhabdoid tumors (RT), are there clinical, therapeutic, and/or (epi-)genetic differences between those conceived following ART compared to those conceived without ART? SUMMARY ANSWER We detected a significantly elevated female predominance, and a lower median age at diagnosis, of children with RT conceived following ART (RT_ART) as compared to other children with RT. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Anecdotal evidence suggests an association of ART with RT. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION This was a multi-institutional retrospective survey. Children with RT conceived by ART were identified in our EU-RHAB database (n = 11/311 children diagnosed between January 2010 and January 2018) and outside the EU-RHAB database (n = 3) from nine different countries. A population-representative German EU-RHAB control cohort of children with RTs conceived without ART (n = 211) (EU-RHAB control cohort) during the same time period was used as a control cohort for clinical, therapeutic, and survival analyses. The median follow-up time was 11.5 months (range 0–120 months) for children with RT_ART and 18.5 months (range 0–153 months) for the EU-RHAB control cohort. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS We analyzed 14 children with RT_ART diagnosed from January 2010 to January 2018. We examined tumors and matching blood samples for SMARCB1 mutations and copy number alterations using FISH, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification, and DNA sequencing. DNA methylation profiling of tumor and/or blood samples was performed using DNA methylation arrays and compared to respective control cohorts of similar age (n = 53 tumors of children with RT conceived without ART, and n = 38 blood samples of children with no tumor born small for gestational age). MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE The median age at diagnosis of 14 individuals with RT_ART was 9 months (range 0–66 months), significantly lower than the median age of patients with RT (n = 211) in the EU-RHAB control cohort (16 months (range 0–253), P  = 0.03). A significant female predominance was observed in the RT_ART cohort (M:F ratio: 2:12 versus 116:95 in EU-RHAB control cohort, P  = 0.004). Eight of 14 RT_ART patients were diagnosed with atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor, three with extracranial, extrarenal malignant rhabdoid tumor, one with rhabdoid tumor of the kidney and two with synchronous tumors. The location of primary tumors did not differ significantly in the EU-RHAB control cohort (P  = 0.27). Six of 14 RT_ART patients presented with metastases at diagnosis. Metastatic stage was not significantly different from that within the EU-RHAB control cohort (6/14 vs 88/211, P  = 1). The incidence of pathogenic germline variants was five of the 12 tested RT_ART patients and, thus, not significantly different from the EU-RHAB control cohort (5/12 versus 36/183 tested, P  = 0.35). The 5-year overall survival (OS) and event free survival (EFS) rates of RT_ART patients were 42.9 ± 13.2% and 21.4 ± 11%, respectively, and thus comparable to the EU-RHAB control cohort (OS 41.1 ± 3.5% and EFS 32.1 ± 3.3). We did not find other clinical, therapeutic, outcome factors distinguishing patients with RT_ART from children with RTs conceived without ART (EU-RHAB control cohort). DNA methylation analyses of 10 tumors (atypical teratoid RT = 6, extracranial, extrarenal malignant RT = 4) and six blood samples from RT_ART patients showed neither evidence of a general DNA methylation difference nor underlying imprinting defects, respectively, when compared to a control group (n = 53 RT samples of patients without ART, P  = 0.51, n = 38 blood samples of patients born small for gestational age, P  = 0.1205). LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION RTs are very rare malignancies and our results are based on a small number of children with RT_ART. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS This cohort of patients with RT_ART demonstrated a marked female predominance, and a rather low median age at diagnosis even for RTs. Other clinical, treatment, outcome, and molecular factors did not differ from those conceived without ART (EU-RHAB control cohort) or reported in other series, and there was no evidence for imprinting defects. Long-term survival is achievable even in cases with pathogenic germline variants, metastatic disease at diagnosis, or relapse. The female preponderance among RT_ART patients is not yet understood and needs to be evaluated, ideally in larger international series. Adolescent externalising behaviours are associated with numerous long-term negative outcomes, although most research is intervention-based as opposed to risk reduction. Arts engagement has been associated with numerous beneficial factors linked to externalising behaviours, yet direct evidence linking them in longitudinal studies is lacking. Data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study were used, with baseline at 5th grade and outcomes measured at 8th grade. Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression was used to examine individual-level associations between extracurricular and school-based arts engagement with externalising behaviours. OLS regression was also used to examine associations between school-level arts classes and facilities with an administrator-reported index of externalising behaviours in the school. All models were adjusted for sociodemographic factors. Individual-level analyses were clustered by school. At the individual level, engaging in a greater number of extracurricular arts activities was associated with fewer externalising behaviours, although there was no association for school-based arts engagement. There were no school-level associations between arts classes or adequate arts facilities and externalising behaviours. Our results suggest extracurricular arts activities may be beneficial in reducing the risk for externalising behaviours, but the relationship is seen at an individual-level of engagement rather than based on school-level provision or facilities. Purpose: Although arts engagement holds promise for reducing loneliness and enhancing social support, previous research has focussed on older adults. We investigated whether arts engagement was associated with loneliness and social support during adolescence. Methods: We included 11,780 adolescents aged 11–21 years from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, a nationally representative cohort study. We measured whether adolescents engaged in school-based arts activities (band, book club, chorus, choir, cheerleading, dance, drama club, newspaper, orchestra) at wave one (1994–1995). Loneliness and perceived social support from peers were measured at waves one and two (1996). We used logistic regression to test whether arts engagement was associated with concurrent and subsequent loneliness and social support. Results: Arts engagement was not associated with concurrent or subsequent loneliness. Compared to not engaging, doing one or more school-based arts activities was associated with 59% higher odds of high social support concurrently (odds ratio [OR] = 1.59, 95% CI = 1.32–1.91). However, this cross-sectional association was attenuated after adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related covariates (adjusted OR [AOR] = 1.16, 95% CI = 0.95–1.42). In contrast, doing arts activities was associated with 28% higher odds of reporting high social support one year later (AOR = 1.28, 95% CI = 1.03–1.59), independent of covariates and previous social support. Conclusions: Extracurricular arts activities are associated with increased odds of reporting good subsequent social support from peers. This may be because they provide opportunities for social engagement, developing friendships, and building a sense of community. Purpose: This paper aims to answer the following research questions: Does the Canadian Arts Summit's membership (i.e. Canada's largest cultural institutions) reflect Canada's diversity? What is the state of diversity among leadership roles within Canada's largest cultural institutions when viewed through a geographical, gender and racial diversity, and intersectional lens? Design/methodology/approach: Employing a geographic, gender, racial diversity and intersectional lens, the authors investigated the largest and most influential arts and cultural organizations in Canada (n = 125) to examine their leadership diversity. The authors found that there is a disconnect between the diversity of Canada and the leadership representation among the largest arts organizations. The authors rationalize the management implications of a lack of diversity leading Canada's cultural sector. Findings: The leadership of major arts organizations in Canada does not reflect the diversity of Canada's population. For example, among 125 Canadian Arts Summit organizations, only 5.7% of CEOs are racialized compared to 94.3% who are White. The findings show similar results for lack of diversity in the Artistic Director and Chair of the Board roles. Originality/value: There is limited research using this methodology to investigate leadership diversity, especially in the arts and culture sector. This research can create a benchmark for the sector to improve the status quo. The value of this research aims to encourage policy actors and arts leaders to address diversity and inclusion within their organizations and the communities they aim to serve. The tertiary industry occupies a large area in China's economic system, and it plays an important function in the growth of China's economic development. It is of positive significance to study the relationship between emotional labor and occupational self-efficacy of singing artists in the tertiary industry. This paper mainly studies the correlation between the emotional labor of singing artists and their professional self-efficacy and analyzes the strength of the correlation. This paper selects 150 singing art personnel in the singing art association in city A to conduct a questionnaire survey and conducts data processing on the questionnaire. This paper explores the influencing factors of emotional labor and four dimensions of occupational self-efficacy. This paper firstly analyzes the differences of the influencing factors of emotional labor and then tests the interaction of the different factors selected. It then conducts a significant test on the four dimensions of professional self-efficacy and finally studies the correlation between the two based on the previous analysis results. This paper concludes that there is a highly significant relationship between the emotional labor and professional ego efficacy of singing artists. And the correlation coefficient and determination coefficient are 0.293 and 0.087, respectively. It shows that 8.7% of the total variance in occupational self-efficacy variables can be explained by emotional labor. There was no significant correlation between surface acting and occupational self-efficacy. Deep acting has the greatest correlation with the physical and mental efficacy dimension of occupational self-efficacy, with a correlation coefficient of 0.391. There were significant correlations between natural performance and the four dimensions of occupational self-efficacy. The highest value is interpersonal efficacy, which is 0.337. The research conclusions of this paper have certain reference value for exploring the relationship between emotional labor and professional self-efficacy of singing artists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, the ideas and activities of the Helikon Association in Turkey and the Khorus Jangi Association in Iran, which had a strong impact on the modern art of the neighboring countries Iran and Turkey, will be compared and their impact on the tendency of Turkish and Iranian artists to avant-garde art will be discussed. These two art associations were established in the 1950s by like-minded friends from various branches of art and literature. Specialists from the plastic arts, poetry and literature, music, cinema, and theater came together in these associations to share and discuss the new movements and ideas emerging in these branches around the world. Since most of the members of the Helikon Association are musicians, this association is mostly known for music, whereas painting and poetry predominate in the Khorus Jangi Association. The aims of these associations are presented by their founders as introducing the art of the day to the public and to increase their knowledge on this subject. They were short-lived, and both were closed down by the state because of the political conditions of that time due to false reports and conflicts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first Art Libraries Society of North America conference was held in New York City in 1973. The final session of the conference posed the questions, "Who are we? Where are we going?" Now in 2022, five long-time members of the society reflect on those questions, providing some perspective on the origins, early years, and accomplishments of ARLIS/NA. What was the impetus for a stand-alone organization, given the many other library associations with art librarian members? Who were the leaders who made it happen? How did regional chapters develop? Who were the exhibitors and sponsors? How did the publications advance the profession? What were some of the highlights along the way? Since Darwin proposed that human musicality evolved through sexual selection, empirical evidence has supported intersexual selection as one of the adaptive functions of artistic propensities. However, intrasexual competition has been overlooked. We tested their relative importance by investigating the relationship between the selfperceived talent/expertise in 16 artistic and 2 sports modalities and proxies of intersexual selection (i.e., mate value, mating and parenting efforts, sociosexuality, and number of sexual partners) and intrasexual competition (i.e., aggressiveness, intrasexual competitiveness) in heterosexuals. Participants were 82 Brazilian men, 166 Brazilian women, 146 Czech men, and 458 Czech women (Mage = 26.48, SD = 7.12). Factor analysis revealed five factors: Literary-arts (creative writing, humor, acting/theater/film, poetry, storytelling), Visual-arts (painting/drawing, sculpting, handcrafting, culinary arts, architecture design), Musical-arts (playing/instruments, singing, dance, whistling), Circus-arts (juggling, acrobatics), and Sports (individual, collective). Multivariate General Linear Model (GLM) showed more associations of the arts to intersexual selection in women and to intrasexual selection in men, and overall more relationships in women than in men. In women, literary and musical-arts were related to elevated inter- and intrasexual selections proxies, visual and circus-arts were related to elevated intersexual selection proxies, and sports were related to intrasexual selection proxies. In men, literary-arts and sports were related to elevated inter- and intrasexual selection proxies, musical-arts were related to intrasexual proxies, and circus-arts were related to intersexual proxies; visual-arts did not have predictors. Although present in both sexes, each sexual selection component has different relative importance in each sex. The article deals with the development of modern Ukrainian iconography and the formation of the main centres and regional schools, tracing artistic and stylistic features and trends. The article analyses the activities of the Kyiv and Lviv art schools in the field of sacred art. The main features of the development of modern iconography are identified, and the creativity of leading specialists and iconographers, genres, and technological specifics of iconography are studied. The scientific novelty of this research consists in a comprehensive study of modern Ukrainian iconography, taking into account artistic and stylistic, regional, technological, and canonical aspects. Features of the formation of art schools and associations of sacred art in Ukraine are traced. The aim of the study is to determine the main trends in the development of modern Ukrainian iconography and to identify the influence of the leading schools in the field of sacred art. The methodological basis is a comprehensive analysis of cultural and artistic phenomena in chronological and theoretical aspects of the development of modern sacred art in Ukraine. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) as small 19- to 24-nucleotide noncoding RNAs regulate several mRNA targets and signaling pathways. Therefore, miRNAs are considered key regulators in cellular pathways as well as various pathologies. There is substantial interest in the relationship between disease and miRNAs, which made that one of the important research topics. Interestingly, miRNAs emerged as an attractive approach for clinical application, not only as biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis or in the prediction of therapy response but also as therapeutic tools. For these purposes, the identification of crucial miRNAs in disease is very important. Databases provided valuable experimental and computational miRNAs–disease information in an accessible and comprehensive manner, such as miRNA target genes, miRNA related in signaling pathways and miRNA involvement in various diseases. In this review, we summarized miRNAs–disease databases in two main categories based on the general or specific diseases. In these databases, researchers could search diseases to identify critical miRNAs and developed that for clinical applications. In another way, by searching particular miRNAs, they could recognize in which disease these miRNAs would be dysregulated. Despite the significant development that has been done in these databases, there are still some limitations, such as not being updated and not providing uniform and detailed information that should be resolved in future databases. This survey can be helpful as a comprehensive reference for choosing a suitable database by researchers and as a guideline for comparing the features and limitations of the database by developer or designer. Background: Arts-service organizations (ASOs) are member-directed representative professional bodies, meant to serve the interests of their members as well as their artistic discipline and the public. Despite this broad, mixed role, there is a dearth of academic research about ASOs and the role they play in Canada's cultural ecosystem. Analysis: Working in partnership with cultural research organization Mass Culture, the Arts-Service Organizations as Cultural Research Conduits research project sought to develop more knowledge about this sector. Conclusion and implications: Using a cultural mapping methodology, quantitative and qualitative data were collected about the scale, scope, and role of the sector, particularly with regard to research conducted internally and externally by the ASO sector. Two years ago, a nest box outside my window held a pair of Violet-Green Swallow. I counted six swallows fledge from the box and take their first flights in the July rain. Leaving the roof of the nest box, they flew in little loops out over the water, trying out their wings. I watched them from the dock, their bodies suspended in the air between the raindrops. This experience was the inspiration for what I call 'nest-works' – for poetic wilding of all-too-human spaces. Nest-works began with an experimental panel for the 2021 College Art Association Conference, called 'Co-Making this World'. The experimental session was modelled after the nest of a bird, a Black-Capped Chickadee. As this cavity-nester builds a home of disparate materials, the panel of artist-researchers built a session of disparate theories and practices, as we considered relationships with world-systems that are in the process of making (such as the nest of the chickadee). For Technoetic Arts, we weave a new nest-work of research material, as we consider new models for knowledge and creative production. This nest-work is an entanglement of short essays made by artists working with a common pattern, framing eco-poetics on collaborative and participatory processes with the non-human/more-than-human.
