Abstract

Clearwing tussock moths were collected from different parts of Tamil Nadu, India. The occurrence of Perina nuda (F.) has been documented with morphological studies. Male moths bear no resemblance to females, with almost hyaline forewing and hind wings drab grey to pale purplish grey with a hyaline patch at the apical angle of the hind wing. Females with capucine buff-coloured wings. Males have asymmetrical genitalia with pointed-finger shaped uncus. Abstract

The effect of inserted flat plate on natural convection heat transfer in a square enclosure containing high viscosity materials for various angle of inclinations is numerically investigated. High viscosity of fluid flow at low speed leads to laminar range of Raleigh numbers from 0 to 107.The square enclosure with two isothermal vertical walls at different temperatures and with two horizontal walls at adiabatic conditions are analysed numerically for lower and higher laminar range of Rayleigh numbers 104 and 107. The governing conservative equations are solved using SIMPLE algorithm with second order upwind scheme satisfying suitable boundary conditions. Contour plots of streamlines and isothermals are used for qualitative presentation of results. Local Nusselt number and the average Nusselt number are graphically presented for various configurations. The convection heat transfer in the enclosure is found to vary with the angle of inclination and length of the plate, in addition to the Rayleigh number. 10. Tussock Moths: A Bio-indicator of Disturbed Ecosystems

Abstract

In the wake of invasive species and climate change, sub-family Lymantriinae a neglected group was chosen to evaluate and consider as bio-indicator of the disturbed ecosystem with anthropogenic activities. In the present study, moth collections were carried out through a light trap in the plains at the foot hills of the Nilgiris and hilly regions of lower Pulney hills. The hilly region was more abundant with 260 individuals of 18 species from 12 genera under 5 tribes than the plains with 87 individuals of 14 species from 10 genera under 4 tribes. The dominant Lymantriid fauna were distinctly different for both regions. Plains were dominated by Aroa simplex attributed to prevalence of Lantana camera and hilly regions dominated by Perina nuda on Artocarpus heterophyllus intercropped in coffee plantations. The alpha diversity analysis also indicated that the hilly region was species-rich than the plains with more anthropogenic activities through Shannon Weiner Diversity index, Simpson’s Diversity index, Margalef Index of Species Richness, Equitability J Evenness Index, Jaccard and Sorensen Indices of Similarity.

Abstract

Evaluation of 36 genotypes (released and pre-released) for resistance to Caryedon serratus (Olivier) has been done in this study. The biological (oviposition, survival, mean development period and weight loss) and physical parameters (pod length, width, shell thickness and weight) were observed. The genotypes were grouped into resistant (ALR 1 and ALR 2), moderately resistant (32 Nos.) and moderately susceptible (2 Nos.) based on the Susceptibility Index (SI). The physical and biological parameters have been correlated with SI. Oviposition was less in TMV 7 and more in VG 17016 genotypes. ALR 1 and TMV 14 registered the least and maximum % survival, respectively. Mean development period was the least in VRI 4 and maximum in ALR 1. Maximum weight loss was found in VRI 5 and minimum in ALR 1. Egg count exhibited positive relationship with all physical parameters but no relationship with SI. Survival had significant negative correlation with pod length and shell thickness; whereas it showed positive correlation with SI. Mean developmental period witnessed no relationship with physical parameters and negative relationship with SI, while weight loss showed strong correlation with pod width and SI. Abstract

Eleven chalcidid pupal parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae) of the black headed caterpillar (BHC), Opisina arenosella Walker, 1864 (Lepidoptera: Xyloryctidae) were reared from the South Indian states of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Antrocephalus lugubris (Masi, 1932), Haltichella macrocera (Waterston, 1922) and Kriechbaumerella destructor (Waterston, 1922) are newly reported as parasitoids of BHC pupae. Also reported are A. hakonensis (Ashmead, 1904), A. phaeospilus Waterston, 1922, Brachymeria atteviae Joseph Narendran & Joy, 1972, B. megaspila (Cameron, 1907), B. nephantidis Gahan, 1930, B. nosatoi Habu, 1966, B. podagrica (Fabricius, 1787), and Psilochalcis carinigena (Cameron, 1907). Diagnoses, illustrations and new distributional data given for the 11 species and they are keyed together with six other chalcidid species known to be parasitoids of O. arenosella.
