Deficits in memory performance have been linked to a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. While many studies have assessed the memory impacts of individual conditions, this study considers a broader perspective by evaluating how memory recall is differentially associated with nine common neuropsychiatric conditions using data drawn from 55 international studies, aggregating 15,883 unique participants aged 15-90. The effects of dementia, mild cognitive impairment, Parkinsons disease, traumatic brain injury, stroke, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder on immediate, short-, and long-delay verbal learning and memory (VLM) scores were estimated relative to matched healthy individuals. Random forest models identified age, years of education, and site as important VLM covariates. A Bayesian harmonization approach was used to isolate and remove site effects. Regression estimated the adjusted association of each clinical group with VLM scores. Memory deficits were strongly associated with dementia and schizophrenia (p < 0.001), while neither depression nor ADHD showed consistent associations with VLM scores (p > 0.05). Differences associated with clinical conditions were larger for longer delayed recall duration items. By comparing VLM across clinical conditions, this study provides a foundation for enhanced diagnostic precision and offers new insights into disease management of comorbid disorders.

BACKGROUND: Recent work highlights the role of emotion dysregulation in the pathology of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). As such, emotion-related impulsivity (ERI), the trait-like tendency toward disinhibited thoughts (Pervasive Influence of Feelings, PIF) and actions (Feelings Trigger Action, FTA) during heightened emotional states, may be particularly relevant. We explored whether Inattention (IN) and Hyperactivity/Impulsivity (HI), two core symptom dimensions of ADHD, would relate to distinct facets of ERI, and whether externalizing and internalizing symptoms would moderate these relations. METHOD: Using structural equation modeling, we examined hypotheses among 364 adults recruited for high internalizing and externalizing symptoms. RESULTS: We identified significant paths for FTA regressed on HI and PIF regressed on IN, supporting our hypotheses about main effects. Moderating paths were not significant. CONCLUSIONS: IN and HI correlate with distinct forms of ERI, These effects appear to generalize across co-occurring internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Theoretical and clinical implications are discussed.

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by atypical patterns of social functioning and repetitive/restricted behaviors. ASD commonly co-occurs with ADHD and, despite their clinical distinctiveness, the two share considerable genetic overlap. Given their shared genetic liability, it is unclear which genetic pathways increase the likelihood of ASD independently of ADHD. Methods: We applied Genomic Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to GWAS summary statistics for ASD and childhood-diagnosed ADHD, decomposing the genetic variance for ASD into that which is unique to ASD (uASD) and that which is shared with ADHD. We computed genetic correlations between uASD and 83 external traits to estimate genetic overlap between uASD and other clinically relevant phenotypes. We went on to apply Stratified Genomic SEM to identify classes of genes enriched for uASD. Finally, we implemented Transcriptome-Wide SEM (T-SEM) to explore patterns of gene-expression associated with uASD. Results: We observed positive genetic correlations between uASD and several external traits, most notably those relating to cognitive/educational outcomes and internalizing psychiatric traits. Stratified Genomic SEM showed that heritability for uASD was significantly enriched in genes involved in evolutionarily conserved processes, as well as for a histone mark in the germinal matrix. T-SEM revealed 83 unique genes with expression associated with uASD, 34 of which were novel with respect to univariate analyses. These genes were overrepresented in skin-related pathologies. Limitations: Our study was limited by summary statistics derived exclusively from individuals of European ancestry. Additionally, using data based on a general ASD diagnosis limits our ability to understand genetic factors contributing to the pronounced clinical heterogeneity in ASD. Conclusions: Our findings delineate the unique genetic underpinnings of ASD that are independent of ADHD at the genome-wide, functional, and gene expression level of analysis. In addition, we identify novel associations previously masked by their diametric effects on ADHD. Collectively, these results provide insight into the processes that make ASD biologically unique. Background: The incidence of various mood disorders and temperaments in ADHD patients is well-documented, irrespective of age. These temperamental differences cause emotional and behavioral instability, impacting individual and social functioning, and overall quality of life. This study evaluates different temperaments in adults with ADHD compared to those without ADHD. Methods: This case–control study was performed on 75 adult ADHD patients as the case group and 75 adults without ADHD as the control group. A demographic questionnaire and a shortened Persian version of the TEMPS-A questionnaire were given and completed to the people included in the study to assess different mood temperaments. Results: Comparing different components of mood temperaments between the patients with and without ADHD showed significantly higher mean scores for irritable, anxious, depressed, and cyclothymic temperaments in those with ADHD as compared to a control group. In the group suffering from ADHD, women had significantly higher mean scores for dysthymic and anxious temperaments as compared to men, while the mean score for cyclothymic temperaments was significantly higher in men than in women. A high academic degree was associated with lower scores for mood temperaments, while mood temperaments were independent of patients' age. Conclusions: The higher score of various mood temperaments in patients with ADHD compared to people without this disorder is completely predictable, and this score can potentially affect the gender of the patients as well as their education level. Given the higher scores of temperamental traits in patients with adult ADHD, implementing screening programs aimed at identifying temperamental disorders in these patients is highly emphasized. Underlying deficits in inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity might contribute to suboptimal test-taking behaviours during language assessments that can lead to diagnostic errors. Considerations of potential medication effects on estimates of children's nonword repetition, sentence recall, tense-marking, and narrative abilities are warranted given long-standing enthusiasm for these indices to serve as clinical markers for developmental language disorder (DLD). A battery consisting of 1 nonverbal, 1 reading, and 6 verbal measures was administered twice to 26 children (6–9 years) with independently diagnosed combined-type attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). All participants had been prescribed stimulant medications for the management of their ADHD symptoms and were assessed off- and on-medication, with order counter-balanced across participants. Half of the participants had concomitant DLD. Examiners were unaware of children's clinical status during assessments or when they were testing children who had received medication. Effect sizes were calculated for each measure. Significant score differences indicating a beneficial impact of stimulant medications on children's performances were observed on the recalling sentences subtest of the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals and the Picture Peabody Vocabulary Test. Adjustments may be needed when speech language pathologists use sentence recall or receptive vocabulary measures to make diagnostic decisions with children who have ADHD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Adverse childhood experiences are potentially traumatic events with long‐lasting effects on the health and well‐being of patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is important to clarify which types of long‐lasting autism‐related symptoms are influenced by childhood experiences to design future intervention studies. However, few studies have examined the association between childhood experiences and autistic symptoms in large samples of adults with ASD and individuals with typical development (TD). In this study, we evaluate the effects of adverse childhood experiences on multiple ASD phenotypes among both individuals with ASD and those with TD. Method: We combined questionnaire evaluations; Childhood Abuse and Trauma Scale, the Japanese version of the Autism‐Spectrum Quotient, Conners' Adult ADHD Rating Scale, the Japanese version of the Impact of Event Scale‐Revised, and the Japanese version of the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile. Results: Individuals with ASD and those with TD (n = 205 and 104, respectively) were included. There were significant correlations between the extent of adverse childhood experiences and severity of attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms, posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, and hypersensitivity in both participants with ASD and those with TD. By contrast, ASD core symptoms showed no significant correlation with adverse childhood experiences in either group. These results remained consistent after adjusting for age, sex, and the estimated intelligence quotient. Conclusion: These findings suggest the need for a detailed disentanglement of ASD‐related core and peripheral symptoms of adverse childhood experiences, which may help to appropriately set outcomes for future early interventions for the childhood experiences of individuals with ASD. Irritability and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms frequently co-occur in youth. Although ADHD has been associated with inhibitory control deficits, the literature on irritability and inhibitory control is mixed. Examining how irritability, ADHD symptoms, and inhibitory control interrelate both cross-sectionally and longitudinally across development could shed light on common and distinct mechanisms of youth psychopathology. We utilized a cross-lagged panel model with data from 2 time points (at ages 10 and 12 years) of the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (N = 7,444, or ∼63% of the baseline sample with full data at each time point) to test cross-sectional and longitudinal associations among parent-reported irritability and ADHD symptoms and behaviorally assessed inhibitory control. This was performed separately across discovery and replication subsamples, each n = 3,722. As expected, irritability and ADHD symptoms exhibited strong cross-sectional and reciprocal cross-lagged associations. Higher ADHD symptoms at age 10 years were associated concurrently with poorer inhibitory control and predicted poorer inhibitory control at age 12. Contrary to predictions, inhibitory control was not significantly associated with irritability cross-sectionally, nor was it predictive of later irritability or ADHD symptoms. These findings highlight strong links between irritability and ADHD. Although inhibitory control deficits were linked to ADHD and predictive of its symptom course, inhibitory control had no significant associations with irritability. Future research should investigate other candidate mechanisms of the co-occurrence of irritability and ADHD symptoms and predictors of their developmental trajectories. This study investigated how irritability, ADHD symptoms, and inhibitory control interrelate both cross-sectionally and longitudinally in a sample of youth from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (N = 7,444). Results indicate that irritability and ADHD symptoms exhibit strong reciprocal predictive relationships; however, inhibitory control does not predict later irritability or ADHD, though ADHD symptoms predicted later inhibitory control deficits. Adults with clinical anxiety have significant symptom overlap and above average rates of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Despite this, ADHD remains a vastly under-detected disorder among this population, indicating the need for a screener with well-understood symptom dimensions and good discriminant validity. The current study compared competing models of ADHD as well as discriminant properties of self-reported ADHD symptoms as measured by the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS-v1.1) in 618 adults with clinical anxiety. A three-factor correlated model of Inattention, Impulsivity, and Hyperactivity, with the movement of one item, talks excessively, to a factor of Impulsivity from Hyperactivity fit better than the one-factor, two-factor, and traditional three-factor models of ADHD. Discriminant properties of the screener were fair to good against measures of clinical anxiety and distress; however, some items within the Hyperactivity factor (e.g., difficulty relaxing; feeling driven by a motor) loaded more strongly onto factors of clinical anxiety than ADHD when measures were pooled together. These results suggest that clinicians making differential diagnoses between adult ADHD and anxiety or related disorders should look for evidence of ADHD beyond the overlapping symptoms, particularly for those within the Hyperactivity factor. Current assessment protocols for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) focus heavily on a set of highly overlapping symptoms, with well-validated factors like cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS), executive function (EF), age, sex, and race and ethnicity generally being ignored. Using machine learning techniques, the current study aimed to validate recent findings proposing a subset of ADHD symptoms that, together, predict ADHD diagnosis, severity, and impairment level better than the full symptom list, while also testing whether the inclusion of the factors listed above could further increase accuracy. Parents of 1,922 children (50.1% male) aged 6–17 years completed rating scales of ADHD, CDS, EF, and impairment. Results suggested nine symptoms as most important in predicting outcomes: (a) has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities; (b) does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish work; (c) avoids tasks (e.g., schoolwork, homework) that require sustained mental effort; (d) is often easily distracted; (e) has difficulty organizing tasks and activities; (f) is often forgetful in daily activities; (g) fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat; (h) interrupts/intrudes on others; and (i) shifts around excessively or feels restless or hemmed in. The abbreviated algorithm achieved accuracy rates that did not significantly differ compared to an algorithm comprising all 18 symptoms in predicting impairment, while also demonstrating excellent discriminative ability in predicting ADHD diagnosis. Adding CDS and EF to the abbreviated algorithm further improved the prediction of global impairment. Continued refinement of screening tools will be key to ensuring access to clinical services for youth at risk for ADHD. General Scientific Summary: This study suggests that nine core symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), when incorporated into a machine learning algorithm, can predict ADHD diagnosis and impairment with accuracy equal to that of all 18 symptoms. The inclusion of executive function and cognitive disengagement syndrome in the algorithm appeared to further improve accuracy, although age, sex, and parent race and ethnicity did not. Deployment of this algorithm into schools and pediatrician offices could provide the best and most efficient means to simultaneously screen for the risk of ADHD and impairment. Cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS), formerly termed sluggish cognitive tempo, is a set of symptoms characterized by excessive daydreaming, mental confusion, and slowed behavior/thinking. CDS is distinct from symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other psychopathologies and uniquely associated with functional impairment. However, despite significant progress in developing and evaluating rating scale measures of CDS, no clinical interview of CDS exists with established psychometric properties that can facilitate a multimethod approach assessing CDS. Accordingly, the present study evaluated the psychometric properties of the semistructured Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome–Clinical Interview (CDS-CI). The CDS-CI and the ADHD inattention (ADHD-IN) and hyperactive-impulsivity (ADHD-HI) modules from the Kiddie Schedule of Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children (K-SADS) were administered to a sample of early adolescents (N = 341, ages 10–12 years) and their caregivers. Adolescents and caregivers also completed rating scale measures of CDS and ADHD symptoms. The CDS-CI demonstrated high internal consistency and interrater reliability. CDS-CI scores showed excellent same-source discriminant validity from K-SADS, ADHD-IN, and ADHD-HI scores and encouraging convergent and discriminant validity with rating scale measures, especially for caregivers. Above and beyond K-SADS, ADHD-IN, and ADHD-HI scores, higher parent and adolescent CDS-CI scores were both significantly associated with greater functional impairment. A threshold of ≥ 6 out of 15 symptoms was selected as an initial threshold for determining clinically elevated CDS using the CDS-CI. Findings provide psychometric support for the CDS-CI as a tool in the multimethod assessment of CDS. Public Significance Statement: Given major advancements in understanding cognitive disengagement syndrome (previously termed sluggish cognitive tempo) over the past decade, the present study provides initial support for the Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome–Clinical Interview. Background Methods Results Conclusion Neurovascular interfaces, specifically the blood–brain barrier (BBB) and blood–retinal barrier (BRB), play pivotal roles in maintaining the homeostasis of the central nervous system (CNS). For a long time, these structures were seen only as a way of protection, but we currently know that they have a critical role in CNS (dys)function. Several studies have identified neurovascular alterations in early stages of brain and eye diseases, contributing to the pathophysiology of such conditions. More recently, interesting data have also highlighted the importance of neurovasculature in psychiatric disorders.Using the PubMed database, we brought together the evidence concerning the changes in BBB and BRB under psychiatric conditions, with a focus on anxiety, major depressive disorder (MDD), attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and drug abuse, specifically related with methamphetamine (METH) and cocaine consumption.We summarized the main findings obtained from in vitro and animal studies, as well as clinical research that has been undertaken to identify neurovascular abnormalities upon such neuropsychiatric disorders. The drivers of barrier alterations were examined, namely the role of neuroinflammation, while reporting putative barrier‐associated biomarkers of these disorders.This review underscores the critical need for a deeper understanding of BBB and BRB function in neuropsychiatric conditions and their potential as therapeutic targets while elucidating the key players involved. The innovative approaches to managing these complex disorders are also addressed while bridging the gap concerning what is currently known regarding the association between neuropsychiatric conditions and their vascular implications. Background: The objectives of this study were to examine the association of psychiatric comorbidities and patient characteristics with treatment change and response as well as to assess the association between treatment change and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) among adult patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and psychiatric comorbidities. Methods: De-identified electronic health records from the NeuroBlu Database (2002–2021) were used to select patients ≥ 18 years with ADHD who were prescribed ADHD-specific medication. The index date was set as the first prescription of ADHD medication. The outcomes were treatment change (discontinuation, switch, add-on, or drop) and HCRU (inpatient, outpatient, composite) within 12 months of follow-up. Cox proportional-hazard model was used to assess the association between clinical and demographic patient characteristics and treatment change, while generalized linear model with negative binomial distribution and log link function was used to assess the association between key risk factors linked to treatment change and HCRU rates. Results: A total of 3,387 patients with ADHD were included (ADHD only: 1,261; ADHD + major depressive disorder (MDD): 755; ADHD + anxiety disorder: 467; ADHD + mood disorder: 164). Nearly half (44.8%) of the study cohort experienced a treatment change within the 12-month follow-up period. Treatment switch and add-on were more common in patients with ADHD and comorbid MDD and anxiety disorder (switch: 18.9%; add-on: 20.5%) compared to other cohorts (range for switch: 8.5–13.6%; range for add-on: 8.9–12.1%) Survival analysis demonstrated that the probability of treatment change within 12 months from treatment initiation in the study cohort was estimated to be 42.4%. Outpatient visit rates statistically significantly increased from baseline (mean [SD] 1.03 [1.84] visits/month) to 3 months post-index (mean [SD] 1.62 [1.91] visits/month; p < 0.001), followed by a gradual decline up to 12 months post-index. Being prescribed both a stimulant and a non-stimulant at index date was statistically significantly associated with increased risk of treatment change (adjusted hazard ratio: 1.64; 95% CI: 1.13, 2.38; p = 0.01). Conclusions: This real-world study found that treatment change was common among patients with ADHD and psychiatric comorbidities. Background: While Tourette syndrome (TS) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often co-occur, the nature of the relationship between their symptoms is not well understood. Network analysis of psychopathology allow for detailed examinations of symptom interactions, providing an effective approach to explore the patterns of comorbidity between TS and ADHD symptoms. Methods: This study included 3,958 participants (male/female = 3,004/954, age mean ± SD = 8.60 ± 2.25 years). We collected data on TS symptoms using the Motor Tic, Obsessions and Compulsions, Vocal Tic Evaluation Survey (MOVES), and ADHD symptoms using the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham Rating Scale-IV (SNAP-IV). Network analysis was employed to construct a combined network of TS and ADHD symptoms at the symptom level. We utilized the expected influence (EI) and bridge EI metrics to explore the core and bridge symptoms within the network. Results: The network structure demonstrated a moderate number of non-zero connections between TS and ADHD symptoms, constituting 23.06% of all potential connections. Core symptoms in the comorbidity network included "Often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities," "Certain bad words or thoughts keep going through my mind," and "Words come out that I can't stop or control." Bridging symptoms identified were "Words come out that I can't stop or control," "I do certain things like jumping or clapping over and over," "I can't control all my movements," and "Often talks excessively." Conclusion: The core and bridging symptoms identified in this study serve as potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of TS and ADHD comorbidity in clinical children and adolescents. Background: Sex differences in the symptomatology of adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have often been overlooked when studying behavioral abnormalities. However, it is known that women exhibit considerably more stronger symptoms related to emotional competence than men. Since affective functions significantly influence the processing of risky decision-making and risk-engagement, we assume that risky behavior in ADHD is affected by sex differences. Therefore, we specifically investigated sex-specific effects on the interaction between emotionally induced changes in physiology and behavioral performance on a decision-making task. Methods: Skin conductance responses of twenty-nine adults with ADHD (n = 16 male; n = 13 female) and thirty-three adults in the control group (n = 14 male; n = 19 female) were recorded during the performance in a modified version of the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART). Additional questionnaires were used to reveal insights in the self-assessment of emotional competence, risk perception, and feedback sensitivity. Emotional arousal and decision-making behavior were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models. Results: Results showed different effects of sex on risk behaviors in controls and ADHD. In contrast to healthy controls, female adults with ADHD showed a significantly greater risk engagement in the BART compared to males with ADHD. This contrary sex relation was not observed in skin conductance responses and revealed a significantly different sex-dependent correlation of body response and behavioral task performance in ADHD. Comparisons with results from self-assessments furthermore indicate a reduced behavioral self-perception in women with ADHD, but not in men. Conclusion: In summary, we found an altered interaction between physiological activity and risky behavior in women with ADHD. Thus, the present study indicates a reduced sensitivity towards the own bodily responses in women with ADHD, which could consequently cause increased risky DM behavior in daily life. Introduction: This study examined the association between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption before the first 24 months of life and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: A population administrative cohort study was conducted in Korea (2008–2019) using linked national insurance data and a health screening survey. The cohort included 25,305 children in the exposed group with high sugar-sweetened beverage drinks (≥200 mL) and 339,931 in the reference groups (<200 mL) at 24 months of age. The primary outcome was the development of ADHD based on the International Classification of Disease (ICD) codes. Cox proportional model was used to identify the association between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption during early childhood and the later development of ADHD while controlling for multiple risk factors. Results: Over a mean follow-up period of 9.2 years, the incidence rates of ADHD were 29.6 and 23.8 per 10,000 person-years in the exposed and reference groups, respectively. Compared with the reference group, children consuming high-sugar drinks were at an increased risk of ADHD (adjusted hazard ratio 1.17, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08–1.27). These associations remained significant even after applying alternative ADHD definitions or adjusting for confounding variables. Children and adolescents (henceforth "children") with both attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety experience greater difficulties than children with either alone, though qualitative methodologies are yet to be used to understand the challenges this population experiences. We aimed to explore parent-reported daily impacts of co-occurring anxiety in children with ADHD (ages 8–13 years). Participants were enrolled in an Australian trial evaluating an adapted anxiety intervention and were eligible if their child met diagnostic criteria for ADHD plus separation, social, and/or generalized anxiety disorder. A baseline measure of life impacts associated with child anxiety captured situations parents reported were difficult, due to their child's anxiety. Reflexive thematic analysis of free-text responses (N = 203) facilitated new insights via inductively generating key themes. Three overarching themes highlighted (1) child difficulties with everyday situations and processes due to their anxiety; (2) the nature of the child's anxiety being pervasive and unrelenting; and (3) the strain placed on the child's family system. This study enhances understanding of daily impacts associated with co-occurring anxiety and ADHD and may contribute to an improved understanding of support needs. Background: Previous studies that have assessed social cognition in Attention‐Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have produced inconsistent findings. To summarize these data and shed light upon moderators that may explain observed inconsistencies, we conducted a systematic review and meta‐analysis exploring social cognition (Theory of Mind (ToM), Empathy, Facial and Non‐Facial Emotion Recognition) and Everyday Social Skills in children and adolescents with ADHD. Methods: The current meta‐analysis involved 142 studies including 652 effect sizes. These studies compared children and adolescents with ADHD (n = 8,300) and with typical development (n = 7,983). Results: Participants with ADHD exhibited moderate to very large deficits in ToM (SMD = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.68–0.99), Facial Emotion Recognition (SMD = 0.63, 95% CI = 0.46–0.81), and Everyday Social Skills (SMD = 1.23, 95% CI = 1.08–1.37). The magnitude of these impairments was similar when considering effect sizes adjusted for some covariates and the methodological quality of the studies. Few studies have investigated Empathy and Non‐Facial Emotion Recognition, which precludes definitive conclusions. Conclusions: Children and adolescents with ADHD experience robust impairments in ToM, Facial Emotion Recognition and Everyday Social Skills. Future studies should explore whether these deficits are a consequence of difficulties in other areas of cognition (e.g., executive functioning). Background: Gender clinic and single‐item questionnaire‐based data report increased co‐occurrence of gender diversity and neurodevelopmental conditions. The nuances of these associations are under‐studied. We used a transdiagnostic approach, combining categorical and dimensional characterization of neurodiversity, to further the understanding of its associations with gender diversity in identity and expression in children. Methods: Data from 291 children (Autism N = 104, ADHD N = 104, Autism + ADHD N = 17, neurotypical N = 66) aged 4–12 years enrolled in the Province of Ontario Neurodevelopmental Network were analyzed. Gender diversity was measured multi‐dimensionally using a well‐validated parent‐report instrument, the Gender Identity Questionnaire for Children (GIQC). We used gamma regression models to determine the significant correlates of gender diversity among age, puberty, sex‐assigned‐at‐birth, categorical neurodevelopmental diagnoses, and dimensional neurodivergent traits (using the Social Communication Questionnaire and the Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD Symptoms and Normal Behavior Rating Scales). Internalizing and externalizing problems were included as covariates. Results: Neither a categorical diagnosis of autism nor ADHD significantly correlated with current GIQC‐derived scores. Instead, higher early‐childhood dimensional autistic social‐communication traits correlated with higher current overall gender incongruence (as defined by GIQC‐14 score). This correlation was potentially moderated by sex‐assigned‐at‐birth: greater early‐childhood autistic social‐communication traits were associated with higher current overall gender incongruence in assigned‐males‐at‐birth, but not assigned‐females‐at‐birth. For fine‐grained gender diversity domains, greater autistic restricted‐repetitive behavior traits were associated with greater diversity in gender identity across sexes‐assigned‐at‐birth; greater autistic social‐communication traits were associated with lower stereotypical male expression across sexes‐assigned‐at‐birth. Conclusions: Dimensional autistic traits, rather than ADHD traits or categorical neurodevelopmental diagnoses, were associated with gender diversity domains across neurodivergent and neurotypical children. The association between early‐childhood autistic social‐communication traits and overall current gender diversity was most evident in assigned‐males‐at‐birth. The purpose of the current study was to use the infant sibling design to explore whether proband traits of autism and ADHD could provide information about their infant sibling's temperament. This could help us to gain information about the extent to which infant temperament traits are differentially associated with autism and ADHD traits. We used parent-ratings of autistic traits and ADHD traits (CRS-3) in older siblings diagnosed with autism (age range 4 to 19 years), and their infant siblings' temperament traits (IBQ) at 9 months of age in 216 sibling pairs from two sites (BASIS, UK, and EASE, Sweden) to examine associations across siblings. We found specific, but modest, associations across siblings after controlling for sex, age, developmental level and site. Proband autistic traits were specifically related to low levels of approach in the infant siblings, with infant developmental level explaining part of the variance in infant approach. Proband ADHD traits were specifically related to high levels of infant activity even after controlling for covariates. Our findings suggest that proband traits of autism and ADHD carry information for infant sibling's temperament, indicating that inherited liability may influence early emerging behaviours in infant siblings. Purpose The literature indicates that sexuality education provided in schools/colleges in the United Kingdom (UK) may not be appropriate for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). There appears to be a lack of understanding of the subject regarding young people with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and a dual diagnosis (ASD co-occurring with ADHD). Research also suggests that compared to neurotypical peers, young people with ASD tend to receive less support on sexuality from their parents, who often feel that they lack the appropriate skills to help their children with some sex-related issues. Some young people with ASD and ADHD also report lacking an understanding of the social nuances of dating and intimacy, which is crucial for navigating romantic relationships. Design/methodology/approach This study explored sexuality education and romantic relationships in young people based on a semi-structured interview approach to the topic. Thematic Analysis (TA) was employed to analyze the data. Findings Six themes were developed from the participants' narratives: Societal ideology about sexuality; Substandard school-based sexuality education; The role of adults in sexuality education; Pornography, as a very powerful alternative means of sexuality education; Young people and romance—a complicated world to navigate; Experience of abuse in the young neurodivergent population is a serious matter. Findings revealed that many neurodivergent and neurotypical young people received basic sex education in their schools/colleges and homes and encountered challenges navigating romantic relationships. Neurodivergent young people reported experiencing greater challenges related to their understanding of and building romantic relationships than their neurotypical peers. Originality/value To the researchers' knowledge, this is the first exploration of romantic relationships and sexuality education in neurotypical young people as well as three groups of neurodivergent young people (with ASD, ADHD, and ASD co-occurring with ADHD). Background/Objectives: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) include a wide range of conditions that develop during the formation of the central nervous system, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Tourette syndrome (TS) is another neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by motor and vocal tics, which often co-occurs with ASD and ADHD. This study explores the feasibility of assessing joint hypermobility in children with specific neurodevelopmental conditions by measuring both ankles' passive range of motion (pROM). Methods: This study involved children diagnosed with ASD, ADHD, and TS, aged 5 to 15 years, who were compared with a control group of healthy children. The Beighton and Brighton scores and the pROM of the left and right ankles were measured. Data were analysed using SPSS version 22.0 for Windows (IBM SPSS Statistics, Chicago, IL, USA). A total of 102 subjects participated in this study (72.52% male, with a mean age of 10.7 ± 2.2 years). The sample included 24 children with ASD, 27 with ADHD, 26 with TS, and 25 healthy controls. Results: The pROM of the right and left ankles showed a significant positive correlation with the Beighton and Brighton scores in children with NDDs (ASD, ADHD, and TS combined). A trend towards higher Beighton scores (≥6) was observed in the ADHD and TS groups, with significance found in the TS group (p = 0.013). The pROM of the right ankle was significantly higher in the ADHD (p = 0.021) and TS (p = 0.013) groups compared to the controls. Although the left ankle followed a similar trend in the TS group, the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.066). Controlling for age, the diagnosis of ASD, ADHD, and TS does not appear to impact any of the variables examined. Conclusions: There is a trend towards a higher prevalence of individuals with elevated Beighton scores in the ADHD and TS groups, suggesting greater general flexibility or hypermobility in these patients. However, the pROM of the right ankle is significantly higher in the ADHD and TS groups, with solid evidence in the TS group. These findings were not observed in children with ASD. However, it is necessary to consider the measurements obtained in relation to the patients' age. Finally, given that the pROM of the ankles correlates with the Beighton and Brighton scores, it could be utilised for the initial screening, monitoring, and follow-up of JH in some children with NDDs. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral disorder in children that can persist into adulthood if not treated. Early diagnosis of this condition is crucial for effective treatment. The database includes 61 children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and 60 healthy children as a control group. To diagnose children with ADHD, features were first extracted from EEG signals. Next, a convolutional neural network model was trained, and a new residual network was introduced. The two proposed models were evaluated using tenfold cross-validation on the test data. The average accuracy and F1 score were 92.52% and 93.6%, respectively, for the convolutional model and 96.8% and 97.1% for the ResNet model on the epoch data, respectively. On the other hand, accuracy for subject-based prediction was 96.5% for the convolution model and 98.6% for the modified ResNet model. Accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score for the proposed ResNet model are better than the convolution model proposed in previous studies and better than the proposed model in the literature. This work presents a paradigm shift in the cognitive-inspired domain by introducing a novel ResNet model for ADHD diagnosis. The model's exceptional accuracy, exceeding conventional methods, showcases its potential as a biologically inspired tool. This opens avenues for exploring the neurological underpinnings of ADHD because the model can be used for the manifold learning of EEG signals. Analyzing the proposed network can lead to a deeper understanding of EEG, bridging the gap between artificial intelligence and cognitive neuroscience. Purpose: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. A positive association between ADHD and obesity has been observed, especially in adult samples. In this study, prevalence and correlates of self-reported symptoms indicative of a positive screening for ADHD were examined in patients seeking bariatric treatment. Material and Methods: The study sample was composed of 260 adult patients with obesity referred for bariatric surgery to the Obesity Center of the Endocrinology Unit in Pisa University Hospital between January 2006 and November 2016 (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2; mean ± standard deviation = 46.27 ± 7.45 kg/m2). ADHD symptoms were identified using ADHD Symptom Check‐List‐90‐R Screening Scale. Night-eating, binge-eating/purging behaviors, and temperamental and character traits were assessed in a subsample of 95 patients. Results: Thirty participants had a positive screening for ADHD (11.5%, 95% CI = 7.9–16.1%). Patients with a positive screening showed significantly higher rates of anxiety disorders (40% vs. 16.5%, χ2 = 7.97, p = 0.005) panic disorder (40% vs. 14.3%, χ2 = 10.48, p = 0.001), and a higher severity of psychopathological symptoms and sleep disturbances than those without. In subsample analyses, ADHD symptoms severity was associated with more bulimic behaviors (r = 0.31–0.46), greater harm avoidance (r = 0.45–0.66), less self-directedness (r = − 0.44–0.63), and cooperativeness (r = − 0.26–0.42). Conclusion: ADHD symptoms may be common in patients with obesity seeking bariatric treatment and are positively associated with disordered eating, internalizing features, and maladaptive character traits. Essential minerals are cofactors for synthesis of neurotransmitters supporting cognition and mood. An 8-week fully-blind randomised controlled trial of multinutrients for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) demonstrated three times as many children (age 6–12) had significantly improved behaviour ('treatment responders') on multinutrients (54 %) compared with placebo (18 %). The aim of this secondary study was to evaluate changes in fasted plasma and urinary mineral concentrations following the intervention and their role as mediators and moderators of treatment response. Fourteen essential or trace minerals were measured in plasma and/or urine at baseline and week eight from eighty-six participants (forty-nine multinutrients, thirty-seven placebos). Two-sample t tests/Mann–Whitney U tests compared 8-week change between treatment and placebo groups, which were also evaluated as potential mediators. Baseline levels were evaluated as potential moderators, using logistic regression models with clinical treatment response as the outcome. After 8 weeks, plasma boron, Cr (in females only), Li, Mo, Se and vanadium and urinary iodine, Li and Se increased more with multinutrients than placebo, while plasma phosphorus decreased. These changes did not mediate treatment response. However, baseline urinary Li trended towards moderation: participants with lower baseline urinary Li were more likely to respond to multinutrients (P = 0·058). Additionally, participants with higher baseline Fe were more likely to be treatment responders regardless of the treatment group (P = 0·036.) These results show that multinutrient treatment response among children with ADHD is independent of their baseline plasma mineral levels, while baseline urinary Li levels show potential as a non-invasive biomarker of treatment response requiring further study. Data were collected from 290 adults; 149 with NDD and 141 sex- and age- (20–50 years) matched controls completed the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile, Adult Developmental Coordination Disorder, Adults Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Functions, Mini Sleep, and Time Organization and Participation questionnaires. Structural equation model (SEM) analysed relationships and variable prediction.Significant between-group differences were found for all variables; SEM indicated similar paths in both groups. Sensory processing affected EF-MI and sleep quality and significantly correlated with motor coordination, affecting EF-MI; EF-MI affected organization-in-time. Background: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a multifaceted neurodevelopmental psychiatric condition that typically emerges during childhood but often persists into adulthood, significantly impacting individuals' functioning, relationships, productivity, and overall quality of life. However, the current diagnostic process exhibits limitations that can significantly affect its overall effectiveness. Notably, its face-to-face and time-consuming nature, coupled with the reliance on subjective recall of historical information and clinician subjectivity, stand out as key challenges. To address these limitations, objective measures such as neuropsychological evaluations, imaging techniques and physiological monitoring of the Autonomic Nervous System functioning, have been explored. Methods: The main aim of this study was to investigate whether physiological data (i.e., Electrodermal Activity, Heart Rate Variability, and Skin Temperature) can serve as meaningful indicators of ADHD, evaluating its utility in distinguishing adult ADHD patients. This observational, case-control study included a total of 76 adult participants (32 ADHD patients and 44 healthy controls) who underwent a series of Stroop tests, while their physiological data was passively collected using a multi-sensor wearable device. Univariate feature analysis was employed to identify the tests that triggered significant signal responses, while the Informative k-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithm was used to filter out less informative data points. Finally, a machine-learning decision pipeline incorporating various classification algorithms, including Logistic Regression, KNN, Random Forests, and Support Vector Machines (SVM), was utilized for ADHD patient detection. Results: Results indicate that the SVM-based model yielded the optimal performance, achieving 81.6% accuracy, maintaining a balance between the experimental and control groups, with sensitivity and specificity of 81.4% and 81.9%, respectively. Additionally, integration of data from all physiological signals yielded the best results, suggesting that each modality captures unique aspects of ADHD. Conclusions: This study underscores the potential of physiological signals as valuable diagnostic indicators of adult ADHD. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, our findings demonstrate that multimodal physiological data collected via wearable devices can complement traditional diagnostic approaches. Public interest in the potential benefits of white, pink, and brown noise for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has recently mushroomed. White noise contains all frequencies of noise and sounds like static; pink or brown noise has more power in the lower frequencies and may sound, respectively, like rain or a waterfall. This meta-analysis evaluated effects on laboratory tasks in individuals with ADHD or elevated ADHD symptoms. Eligible studies reported on participants with diagnosis of ADHD or elevated symptoms of ADHD who were assessed in a randomized trial using laboratory tasks intended to measure aspects of attention or academic work involving attention or executive function while exposed to white, pink, and brown noise and compared with a low/no noise condition. Two authors independently reviewed and screened studies for eligibility. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted with preplanned moderator analyses of age, diagnostic status, and task type. Publication bias was evaluated. The GRADE tool was used to assess certainty of the evidence. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to evaluate robustness. Studies of children and college-age young adults with ADHD or ADHD symptoms (k = 13, N = 335) yielded a small but statistically significant benefit of white and pink noise on task performance (g = 0.249, 95% CI [0.135, 0.363], p <.0001). No studies of brown noise were identified. Heterogeneity was minimal, and moderators were nonsignificant; results survived sensitivity tests, and no publication bias was identified. In non-ADHD comparison groups (k = 11, N = 335), white and pink noise had a negative effect (g = −0.212, 95% CI [−0.355, −0.069], p =.0036). White and pink noise provide a small benefit on laboratory attention tasks for individuals with ADHD or high ADHD symptoms, but not for non-ADHD individuals. This article addresses theoretical implications, cautions, risks, and limitations. Background: Alterations in the serum lipid profile have been suspected in many psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and depression. However, studies on lipid status in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are sparse and inconsistent. Methods: Using the nationwide, population-based IQVIA Disease Analyzer database, this retrospective cohort study included 5367 outpatients from general practices in Germany aged ≥18 years with a documented first diagnosis of ADHD between January 2005 and December 2021 and 26,835 propensity score-matched individuals without ADHD. Study outcomes were the first diagnosis of lipid metabolism disorders as a function of ADHD within up to 10 years of the index date. The cumulative 10-year incidence was analyzed using Kaplan–Meier curves and compared using the log-rank test. In addition, univariate Cox regression analyses were performed. Results: In the regression analysis, there was no significant association between ADHD and subsequent lipid metabolism disorders in the total population (HR: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.83–1.08), among women (HR: 1.04; 95% CI: 0.84–1.28), and among men (HR: 0.89; 95% CI: 0.74–1.06). In addition, no significant association was observed in the disease-stratified analyses. Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate that ADHD does not exert an influence on lipid metabolism. Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are two of the most common childhood mental disorders, and they have substantial comorbidity. The developmental precursor model has long been widely used to explain the mechanisms of comorbidity between ODD and ADHD, however whether it is equally effective at the symptomatic level is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to (a) examine the stability of the ODD and ADHD comorbidity network in a longitudinal sample of high-risk children in China; and (b) examine the longitudinal relationship between the ODD and ADHD symptom networks based on a developmental precursor model. Two hundred sixty-three Chinese children aged 6 to 13 years with ODD and/or ADHD were assessed for symptoms of ODD and ADHD in two surveys conducted 1 year apart. We used data from these two time points to construct two cross-sectional networks and a cross-lagged panel network (CLPN) to explore the symptom network for comorbidity of ODD and ADHD. The analysis shows that: (1) the two cross-sectional networks are highly similar in terms of structure, existence of edges, centrality estimates, and the invariance test shows that there is no significant difference between them. The symptoms "follow through", "interrupts/intrudes", "difficulty playing quietly" and "concentration" had the highest expected influence centrality at both time points. (2) Combined with the results of the cross-sectional and cross-lagged networks, we found that "annoy" and "blame" are potential bridge symptoms between the ODD and ADHD symptom networks. The symptom "annoy" forms a reciprocal predictive relationship with "interrupts/intrudes", while "blame" unidirectionally predicts "close attention". In addition, we found that "vindictive" predicted numerous ADHD symptoms, whereas "angry" was predicted by numerous ADHD symptoms. The findings emphasize the broad predictive relationship between ODD and ADHD symptoms with each other, and that ODD symptoms may lead to activation of the ADHD symptom network and vice versa. These findings suggest that the developmental precursor model at the symptom level may partially explain the comorbidity mechanisms of ODD and ADHD, and future studies should further investigate the underlying multiple mechanisms. Despite the high coexistence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (ASD + ADHD), the underlying neurobiological basis of this disorder remains unclear. Altered brain structural asymmetries have been verified in ASD and ADHD, respectively, making brain asymmetry a candidate for characterizing this coexisting disorder. Here, we measured the gray matter (GM) volume asymmetry in ASD + ADHD versus ASD without ADHD (ASD-only), ADHD without ASD (ADHD-only), and typically developing controls (TDc). High-resolution T1-weighted data from 48 ASD + ADHD, 63 ASD-only, 32 ADHD-only, and 211 matched TDc were included in our study. We also assessed brain-behavior relationships and the effects of age on GM asymmetry. We found that there were both shared and disorder-specific GM volume asymmetry alterations in ASD + ADHD, ASD-only, and ADHD-only compared with TDc. This finding demonstrates that ASD + ADHD is neither an endophenocopy nor an additive pathology of ASD and ADHD, but an entirely different neuroanatomical pathology. In addition, ASD + ADHD displayed altered GM volume asymmetries in the prefrontal regions responsible for executive function and theory of mind compared with ASD-only. Previous work shows a reinforcing impact of action effect on behavior, independent of other reinforces such as positive outcomes or task success. Action-effect temporal contiguity plays an important role in such a reinforcing effect, possibly indicating a motor-based evaluation of their causal relationship. In the present study, we aimed to negate the reinforcing impact of an immediate action effect with task success by designing a task where red and green circle stimuli rapidly descended on the screen. Participants were instructed to respond only when a specific sequence of colored stimuli matched a predefined response rule. The temporal contiguity between the response and a perceptual effect was manipulated. We initially hypothesized an increased action tendency resulting in higher false alarm rates in the immediate (compared to 400 ms lag) action-effect condition. We also expected this pattern to be more pronounced in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder compared to typically developing individuals. Contrary to our expectations, results from three experiments showed a consistent pattern of a lower false alarm rate in the immediate compared to the 400 ms lag effect condition across both attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and typically developing groups. Additionally, while action-effect temporal contiguity did not significantly alter the overall rate of misses, we observed earlier improvements in both misses and false alarms in the immediate condition during the first blocks. Possible explanations for the complex impact of action effect on action tendency and action control are discussed. Public Significance Statement: The sensory consequence of an action (action effect) plays a vital role in motor learning and control. In the current study, an immediate action effect improved action control performance as indicated by lower commission errors (false alarms) to the same degree in both typically developed individuals and those diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. In addition, an immediate action effect enhanced the efficiency of practice on performance, as indicated by lower misses and false alarms during the first blocks. Stimulants, including methylphenidate and amphetamines, are the first-line pharmacological treatment of ADHD in adults. However, in patients who do not respond or poorly tolerate stimulants, non-stimulant medications are usually recommended. The authors provide a narrative review of the literature on non-stimulant treatments for adult ADHD, including controlled and observational clinical studies conducted on adult samples. Atomoxetine has been extensively studied and showed significant efficacy in treating adult ADHD. Issues related to dosing, treatment duration, safety, and use in the case of psychiatric comorbidity are summarized. Among other compounds indicated for ADHD in adults, antidepressants sharing at least a noradrenergic or dopaminergic component, including tricyclic compounds, bupropion, and viloxazine, have shown demonstratable efficacy. Evidence is also available for antihypertensives, particularly guanfacine, as well as memantine, metadoxine, and mood stabilizers, while negative findings have emerged for galantamine, antipsychotics, and cannabinoids. While according to clinical guidelines, atomoxetine may serve as the only second-line option in adults with ADHD, several other nonstimulant compounds may be effectively used in order to personalize treatment based on comorbid conditions and ADHD features. Introduction: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a recognized neurodevelopmental disorder with a complex, multifactorial origin. Lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) are highly toxic substances that can potentially impair brain development and have been implicated in the development of ADHD. This systematic review aims to analyze the epidemiological literature regarding the association between Pb and Hg exposure and the diagnosis of ADHD. Methods: From November 1983 to June 2, 2023, a comprehensive search was conducted in multiple databases and search engines, including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Observational studies (case-control, cohort, and cross-sectional) measuring Pb and Hg levels in various biological samples (blood, hair, urine, nail, saliva, teeth, and bone) of children with ADHD or their parents and their association with ADHD symptoms were included. Results: Out of 2059 studies, 87 met the inclusion criteria and were included in this systematic review. Approximately two-thirds of the 74 studies investigating Pb levels in different biological samples reported associations with at least one subtype of ADHD. However, most studies examining Hg levels in various biological samples found no significant association with any ADHD subtype, although there were variations in exposure periods and diagnostic criteria. Conclusion: The evidence gathered from the included studies supports an association between Pb exposure and the diagnosis of ADHD, while no significant association was found with Hg exposure. Importantly, even low levels of Pb were found to elevate the risk of ADHD. Abstract Background Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by atypical patterns of social functioning and repetitive/restricted behaviors. ASD commonly co-occurs with ADHD and, despite their clinical distinctiveness, the two share considerable genetic overlap. Given their shared genetic liability, it is unclear which genetic pathways increase the likelihood of ASD independently of ADHD. Methods We applied Genomic Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to GWAS summary statistics for ASD and childhood-diagnosed ADHD, decomposing the genetic variance for ASD into that which is unique to ASD (uASD) and that which is shared with ADHD. We computed genetic correlations between uASD and 83 external traits to estimate genetic overlap between uASD and other clinically relevant phenotypes. We went on to apply Stratified Genomic SEM to identify classes of genes enriched for uASD. Finally, we implemented Transcriptome-Wide SEM (T-SEM) to explore patterns of gene-expression associated with uASD. Results We observed positive genetic correlations between uASD and several external traits, most notably those relating to cognitive/educational outcomes and internalizing psychiatric traits. Stratified Genomic SEM showed that heritability for uASD was significantly enriched in genes involved in evolutionarily conserved processes, as well as for a histone mark in the germinal matrix. T-SEM revealed 83 unique genes with expression associated with uASD, 34 of which were novel with respect to univariate analyses. These genes were overrepresented in skin-related pathologies. Limitations Our study was limited by summary statistics derived exclusively from individuals of European ancestry. Additionally, using data based on a general ASD diagnosis limits our ability to understand genetic factors contributing to the pronounced clinical heterogeneity in ASD. Conclusions Our findings delineate the unique genetic underpinnings of ASD that are independent of ADHD at the genome-wide, functional, and gene expression level of analysis. In addition, we identify novel associations previously masked by their diametric effects on ADHD. Collectively, these results provide insight into the processes that make ASD biologically unique.

Abstract Background The incidence of various mood disorders and temperaments in ADHD patients is well-documented, irrespective of age. These temperamental differences cause emotional and behavioral instability, impacting individual and social functioning, and overall quality of life. This study evaluates different temperaments in adults with ADHD compared to those without ADHD. Methods This case–control study was performed on 75 adult ADHD patients as the case group and 75 adults without ADHD as the control group. A demographic questionnaire and a shortened Persian version of the TEMPS-A questionnaire were given and completed to the people included in the study to assess different mood temperaments. Results Comparing different components of mood temperaments between the patients with and without ADHD showed significantly higher mean scores for irritable, anxious, depressed, and cyclothymic temperaments in those with ADHD as compared to a control group. In the group suffering from ADHD, women had significantly higher mean scores for dysthymic and anxious temperaments as compared to men, while the mean score for cyclothymic temperaments was significantly higher in men than in women. A high academic degree was associated with lower scores for mood temperaments, while mood temperaments were independent of patients’ age. Conclusions The higher score of various mood temperaments in patients with ADHD compared to people without this disorder is completely predictable, and this score can potentially affect the gender of the patients as well as their education level. Given the higher scores of temperamental traits in patients with adult ADHD, implementing screening programs aimed at identifying temperamental disorders in these patients is highly emphasized.

Abstract Background While Tourette syndrome (TS) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often co-occur, the nature of the relationship between their symptoms is not well understood. Network analysis of psychopathology allow for detailed examinations of symptom interactions, providing an effective approach to explore the patterns of comorbidity between TS and ADHD symptoms. Methods This study included 3,958 participants (male/female = 3,004/954, age mean ± SD = 8.60 ± 2.25 years). We collected data on TS symptoms using the Motor Tic, Obsessions and Compulsions, Vocal Tic Evaluation Survey (MOVES), and ADHD symptoms using the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham Rating Scale-IV (SNAP-IV). Network analysis was employed to construct a combined network of TS and ADHD symptoms at the symptom level. We utilized the expected influence (EI) and bridge EI metrics to explore the core and bridge symptoms within the network. Results The network structure demonstrated a moderate number of non-zero connections between TS and ADHD symptoms, constituting 23.06% of all potential connections. Core symptoms in the comorbidity network included “Often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities,” “Certain bad words or thoughts keep going through my mind,” and “Words come out that I can’t stop or control.” Bridging symptoms identified were “Words come out that I can’t stop or control,” “I do certain things like jumping or clapping over and over,” “I can’t control all my movements,” and “Often talks excessively.” Conclusion The core and bridging symptoms identified in this study serve as potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of TS and ADHD comorbidity in clinical children and adolescents.

Abstract Background The objectives of this study were to examine the association of psychiatric comorbidities and patient characteristics with treatment change and response as well as to assess the association between treatment change and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) among adult patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and psychiatric comorbidities. Methods De-identified electronic health records from the NeuroBlu Database (2002–2021) were used to select patients ≥ 18 years with ADHD who were prescribed ADHD-specific medication. The index date was set as the first prescription of ADHD medication. The outcomes were treatment change (discontinuation, switch, add-on, or drop) and HCRU (inpatient, outpatient, composite) within 12 months of follow-up. Cox proportional-hazard model was used to assess the association between clinical and demographic patient characteristics and treatment change, while generalized linear model with negative binomial distribution and log link function was used to assess the association between key risk factors linked to treatment change and HCRU rates. Results A total of 3,387 patients with ADHD were included (ADHD only: 1,261; ADHD + major depressive disorder (MDD): 755; ADHD + anxiety disorder: 467; ADHD + mood disorder: 164). Nearly half (44.8%) of the study cohort experienced a treatment change within the 12-month follow-up period. Treatment switch and add-on were more common in patients with ADHD and comorbid MDD and anxiety disorder (switch: 18.9%; add-on: 20.5%) compared to other cohorts (range for switch: 8.5–13.6%; range for add-on: 8.9–12.1%) Survival analysis demonstrated that the probability of treatment change within 12 months from treatment initiation in the study cohort was estimated to be 42.4%. Background: The study examines the psychometric properties of the ADHD section of the semi-structured diagnostic interview ILF-EXTERNAL, which was conducted online via video chat. Methods: As part of the INTEGRATE-ADHD research project, 202 children and adolescents (age M = 12.87 years, SD = 3.04, 28.2 % female) with an administrative diagnosis of ADHD registered with their health insurance company were clinically assessed for the presence of ADHD according to the German ADHD S3 guideline. Using the ILF-EXTERNAL, one parent and, from the age of eight, also the children themselves were interviewed. A proxy rating by a parent was made using the German FBB-ADHS rating scale. In a subsample (n = 65), an independent blind interviewer rated the videorecordings of the ILF-EXTERNAL parent interview to determine the interrater reliability of the ILF-EXTERNAL. Results: All ADHD symptom scales of the ILF-EXTERNAL showed good to excellent internal consistency (α = 0.89 to 0.93). Interrater reliability was high for both categorical and dimensional analyses (κ = 0.78 and κ = 0.81; ICC(1,1) = 0.97 and 0.98). High correlations of the ILF-EXTERNAL parent interview with the FBB-ADHS (r = 0.79 to r = 0.85) and with the ILF-EXTERNAL child interview (r = 0.60 to r = 0.71) demonstrated convergent validity. Conclusions: Sound psychometric properties of the ILF-EXTERNAL were also confirmed for its use in an online setting. High interrater reliabilities demonstrate the quality of the ADHD diagnostics carried out in the consortium project INTEGRATE-ADHD.

Abstract Background Sex differences in the symptomatology of adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have often been overlooked when studying behavioral abnormalities. However, it is known that women exhibit considerably more stronger symptoms related to emotional competence than men. Since affective functions significantly influence the processing of risky decision-making and risk-engagement, we assume that risky behavior in ADHD is affected by sex differences. Therefore, we specifically investigated sex-specific effects on the interaction between emotionally induced changes in physiology and behavioral performance on a decision-making task. Methods Skin conductance responses of twenty-nine adults with ADHD (n = 16 male; n = 13 female) and thirty-three adults in the control group (n = 14 male; n = 19 female) were recorded during the performance in a modified version of the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART). Additional questionnaires were used to reveal insights in the self-assessment of emotional competence, risk perception, and feedback sensitivity. Emotional arousal and decision-making behavior were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models. Results Results showed different effects of sex on risk behaviors in controls and ADHD. In contrast to healthy controls, female adults with ADHD showed a significantly greater risk engagement in the BART compared to males with ADHD. This contrary sex relation was not observed in skin conductance responses and revealed a significantly different sex-dependent correlation of body response and behavioral task performance in ADHD. Comparisons with results from self-assessments furthermore indicate a reduced behavioral self-perception in women with ADHD, but not in men. Conclusion In summary, we found an altered interaction between physiological activity and risky behavior in women with ADHD. Thus, the present study indicates a reduced sensitivity towards the own bodily responses in women with ADHD, which could consequently cause increased risky DM behavior in daily life. The current results suggest that more consideration needs to be given to sex-specific effects on physiological processes and behavior in adults with ADHD.

Abstract Background Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a multifaceted neurodevelopmental psychiatric condition that typically emerges during childhood but often persists into adulthood, significantly impacting individuals’ functioning, relationships, productivity, and overall quality of life. However, the current diagnostic process exhibits limitations that can significantly affect its overall effectiveness. Notably, its face-to-face and time-consuming nature, coupled with the reliance on subjective recall of historical information and clinician subjectivity, stand out as key challenges. To address these limitations, objective measures such as neuropsychological evaluations, imaging techniques and physiological monitoring of the Autonomic Nervous System functioning, have been explored. Methods The main aim of this study was to investigate whether physiological data (i.e., Electrodermal Activity, Heart Rate Variability, and Skin Temperature) can serve as meaningful indicators of ADHD, evaluating its utility in distinguishing adult ADHD patients. This observational, case-control study included a total of 76 adult participants (32 ADHD patients and 44 healthy controls) who underwent a series of Stroop tests, while their physiological data was passively collected using a multi-sensor wearable device. Univariate feature analysis was employed to identify the tests that triggered significant signal responses, while the Informative k-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithm was used to filter out less informative data points. Finally, a machine-learning decision pipeline incorporating various classification algorithms, including Logistic Regression, KNN, Random Forests, and Support Vector Machines (SVM), was utilized for ADHD patient detection. Results Results indicate that the SVM-based model yielded the optimal performance, achieving 81.6% accuracy, maintaining a balance between the experimental and control groups, with sensitivity and specificity of 81.4% and 81.9%, respectively. Additionally, integration of data from all physiological signals yielded the best results, suggesting that each modality captures unique aspects of ADHD. Conclusions This study underscores the potential of physiological signals as valuable diagnostic indicators of adult ADHD. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, our findings demonstrate that multimodal physiological data collected via wearable devices can complement traditional diagnostic approaches. Further research is warranted to explore the clinical applications and long-term implications of utilizing physiological markers in ADHD diagnosis and management.

Objectives: Attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental condition and is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Research suggests that some populations, such as females and individuals with high intelligence quotients may be a risk for late ADHD diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Our goal is to advance our understanding of ADHD diagnosis, by examining (1) how child sex and cognitive abilities together are related to the age of diagnosis and (2) whether symptom presentation, current internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and demographic factors are related to age of diagnosis. Methods: Our analyses contained children who completed the required tests (N = 568) from a pre‐existing dataset of 1380 children with ADHD from the Province of Ontario Neurodevelopmental Disorders (POND) Network (pond‐network.ca). First, we conducted a moderation analysis with sex as the predictor, cognitive abilities as the moderator, and age of diagnosis as the outcome. Second, we conducted correlation analyses examining how symptom presentation, current internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and demographic factors are related to age of diagnosis. Results: Higher IQ was related to a later age of diagnosis. Higher hyperactive–impulsive symptoms and externalizing symptoms were related to an earlier age of diagnosis. Internalizing symptoms were trend associated with a later age of diagnosis in girls. Higher socioeconomic status and non‐White maternal ethnicity were related to later age of diagnosis. Conclusions: IQ, sex, ADHD symptomology, internalizing symptoms, externalizing symptoms, and socio‐demographic factors affect the age of diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background The gut microbiota is believed to influence neurodevelopment through the gut–brain axis, but prior studies have shown inconsistent results regarding early childhood antibiotic exposure and subsequent risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hypothesis that exposure to antibacterial agents in the first 2 years of life increases the risk of ASD and/or ADHD. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study using 2003–2019 data from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Livebirths born between 2004 and 2016 were identified and separated into singleton, full sibling, and exposure-discordant sibling pair cohorts. The exposure group included children who filled at least one prescription for antibacterial agents between 0 and 2 years old in outpatient settings. The outcome, ASD and/or ADHD, was defined by at least one inpatient or outpatient diagnosis. The maximum follow-up age was 15 years in this study. Potential neonatal, maternal and paternal confounders were adjusted for. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the relative event risk. Results The final sample contained 946,581 children in the singleton cohort, 1,142,693 children in the full sibling cohort, and 352,612 children in the exposure-discordant sibling pair cohort. Antibiotic exposure marginally increased the risk of ASD and/or ADHD in the singleton cohort (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 1.06, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04–1.07) and in the full sibling cohort (aHR: 1.03, 95% CI: 1.01–1.04). A slight decrease in the risk of ASD and/or ADHD was observed in the exposure-discordant sibling pair cohort (aHR: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.90–0.94). Conclusions The results suggest that early life antibiotic exposure has minimal impact on the risk of ASD and/or ADHD. Given that the estimated effects are marginal and close to null, concerns about ASD and/or ADHD risk increase should not postpone or deter timely and reasonable antibiotic use.

Abstract Background This survey study investigated the types of sources other than medical professionals (e.g., social media) that the caregivers of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) use to acquire knowledge about ADHD and investigated the association between the use of such information sources and caregiver parenting stress and anxiety in Taiwan. Methods A total of 213 caregivers of children with ADHD participated in this study. The sources that the caregivers used to acquire knowledge about ADHD other than medical professionals were investigated. Caregiver parenting stress was assessed using the Parenting Stress Index, and caregiver anxiety was assessed using the Beck Anxiety Inventory. The associations of the types of sources used and total number of source use with caregiver parenting stress and anxiety were investigated using multivariate linear regression analysis. Results The most common source of knowledge other than medical professionals was teachers (55.4%), followed by social media (52.6%), traditional media (50.7%), friends (33.8%), caregivers of other children (21.1%), and family members (18.3%). The caregivers’ mean total number of using sources of knowledge about ADHD other than medical professionals was 2.32. Acquiring knowledge about ADHD from social media was significantly associated with caregiver parenting stress. Additionally, acquiring knowledge about ADHD from caregivers of other children was significantly associated with caregiver parenting stress and anxiety, as was the frequency of using sources of knowledge about ADHD other than medical professionals. Conclusion The caregivers of children with ADHD acquired knowledge about ADHD from multiple sources. Acquiring knowledge about ADHD from social media was significantly associated with caregiver parenting stress. The number of sources of knowledge about ADHD was significantly associated with caregiver parenting stress and anxiety.

Background: Sensory processing (SP) indicates the ability of the nervous system to receive, analyze, process, and respond to external sensory input and coordinates motor movements accordingly. Children with various neurodevelopmental disorders, like autism spectrum disorder, have SP issues. However, studies regarding SP issues in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) compared to typically developing children are relatively less. Aims and Objectives: To study the SP pattern of children with ADHD, to compare with the control group, and to study the correlation of symptom severity with SP deficit in children with ADHD. Materials and Methods: All children attending the child guidance clinic at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital were screened, and children with ADHD without any other comorbid disorder as diagnosed by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5 were selected. Their ADHD symptom severity was assessed using the ADHD test, and SP was assessed using the Short Sensory Profile (SSP). Results: The SSP mean score of the children with ADHD was significantly different than the mean score of the control group, and the percentage of children having a definite difference in SP was significantly different in the ADHD children group compared to the control group. The severity of the SP deficit also correlates with the severity of ADHD symptoms, as found by the correlation study. Conclusion: Children with ADHD have shown a definite difference in SP compared to controls, and the severity of the sensory problem is proportionate to the severity of the symptoms of ADHD.

AbstractCognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS) and ADHD are considered distinct but interrelated constructs. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of elevated CDS symptoms and increased ADHD risk in the general population, and their relationships with emotion regulation difficulty (ERD) and alexithymia. Out of 1166 participants, 142 with known psychiatric conditions were excluded, resulting in 1024 participants. Participants completed various scales including Adult ADHD Self-Report Screening Scale for DSM-5 (ASRS-5), Barkley Adult Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) Scale, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-Short Form (DERS-16), and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Four groups were formed based on Barkley and ASRS-5 scores: Group 1) No elevated CDS symptoms and Low risk of ADHD, Group 2) No elevated CDS symptoms and Increased risk of ADHD, Group 3) Elevated CDS symptoms and Low risk of ADHD, Group 4) Elevated CDS symptoms and Increased risk of ADHD. Elevated CDS symptoms was found in 10% of participants, and increased ADHD risk in 9.2%. Among probable ADHD cases, 40% had elevated CDS symptoms, while 60% of elevated CDS symptoms cases had increased ADHD risk. Group 4 (elevated CDS symptoms and increased risk of ADHD) had the highest ERD and alexithymia scores, while Group 1(no elevated CDS symptoms and low risk of ADHD) had the lowest. Regression analyses showed that CDS scores predicted ERD (47%) and alexithymia (32%) better than ADHD scores (ERD: 36%, alexithymia: 23%). Patients with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder, often display abnormal circadian rhythms. The role of the circadian system in these disorders has gained considerable attention over the last decades. Yet, it remains largely unknown how these disruptions occur and to what extent they contribute to the disorders' development. In this review, we examine circadian system dysregulation as observed in patients and animal models of neurodevelopmental disorders. Second, we explore whether circadian rhythm disruptions constitute a risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders from studies in humans and model organisms. Lastly, we focus on the impact of psychiatric medications on circadian rhythms and the potential benefits of chronotherapy. The literature reveals that patients with neurodevelopmental disorders display altered sleep–wake cycles and melatonin rhythms/levels in a heterogeneous manner, and model organisms used to study these disorders appear to support that circadian dysfunction may be an inherent characteristic of neurodevelopmental disorders. Furthermore, the pre‐clinical and clinical evidence indicates that circadian disruption at the environmental and genetic levels may contribute to the behavioural changes observed in these disorders. Finally, studies suggest that psychiatric medications, particularly those prescribed for attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder and schizophrenia, can have direct effects on the circadian system and that chronotherapy may be leveraged to offset some of these side effects. This review highlights that circadian system dysfunction is likely a core pathological feature of neurodevelopmental disorders and that further research is required to elucidate this relationship. Background: The gut microbiota is believed to influence neurodevelopment through the gut–brain axis, but prior studies have shown inconsistent results regarding early childhood antibiotic exposure and subsequent risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hypothesis that exposure to antibacterial agents in the first 2 years of life increases the risk of ASD and/or ADHD. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study using 2003–2019 data from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Livebirths born between 2004 and 2016 were identified and separated into singleton, full sibling, and exposure-discordant sibling pair cohorts. The exposure group included children who filled at least one prescription for antibacterial agents between 0 and 2 years old in outpatient settings. The outcome, ASD and/or ADHD, was defined by at least one inpatient or outpatient diagnosis. The maximum follow-up age was 15 years in this study. Potential neonatal, maternal and paternal confounders were adjusted for. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the relative event risk. Results: The final sample contained 946,581 children in the singleton cohort, 1,142,693 children in the full sibling cohort, and 352,612 children in the exposure-discordant sibling pair cohort. Antibiotic exposure marginally increased the risk of ASD and/or ADHD in the singleton cohort (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 1.06, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04–1.07) and in the full sibling cohort (aHR: 1.03, 95% CI: 1.01–1.04). A slight decrease in the risk of ASD and/or ADHD was observed in the exposure-discordant sibling pair cohort (aHR: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.90–0.94). Conclusions: The results suggest that early life antibiotic exposure has minimal impact on the risk of ASD and/or ADHD. Given that the estimated effects are marginal and close to null, concerns about ASD and/or ADHD risk increase should not postpone or deter timely and reasonable antibiotic use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
