Introduction: Non-invasive cuffless blood pressure devices have shown promising results in accurately estimating blood pressure when comparing measurements at rest. However, none of commercially available or prototype cuffless devices have yet been validated according to the appropriate standards. The aim of the present study was to bridge this gap and evaluate the ability of a prototype cuffless device, developed by Aidee Health AS, to track changes in blood pressure compared to a non-invasive, continuous blood pressure monitor (Human NIBP or Nexfin) in a laboratory set up. The performance was evaluated according to the metrics and statistical methodology described in the ISO 81060-3:2022 standard. However, the present study is not a validation study and thus the study was not conducted according to the ISO 81060-3:2022 protocol, e.g., non-invasive reference and distribution of age not fulfilled. Method: Data were sampled continuously, beat-to-beat, from both the cuffless and the reference device. The cuffless device was calibrated once using the reference BP measurement. Three different techniques (isometric exercise, mental stress, and cold pressor test) were used to induce blood pressure changes in 38 healthy adults. Results: The mean difference (standard deviation) was 0.3 (8.7) mmHg for systolic blood pressure, 0.04 (6.6) mmHg for diastolic blood pressure, and 0.8 (7.9) mmHg for mean arterial pressure, meeting the Accuracy requirement of ISO 81060-3:2022 (≤6.0 (10.0) mmHg). The corresponding results for the Stability criteria were 1.9 (9.2) mmHg, 2.9 (8.1) mmHg and 2.5 (9.5) mmHg. The acceptance criteria for the Change requirement were achieved for the 85th percentile of ≤50% error for diastolic blood pressure and mean arterial pressure but were higher than the limit for systolic blood pressure (56% vs. ≤50%) and for all parameters for the 50th percentile (32%–39% vs. ≤25%). Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that the cuffless device could track blood pressure changes in healthy adults across different activities and showed promising results in achieving the acceptance criteria from ISO 81060-3:2022. Introduction: Recent research has recognized executive dysfunction as another component affected in Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). This systematic review aimed to examine what information distinctive neurophysiological markers can provide in the evaluation of executive function (EF) deficits in PPA, and to what effect executive function deficits can be assessed through the characteristics of functional markers. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search following the PRISMA guidelines across studies that employed neuropsychological assessments and neurophysiological imaging techniques (EEG, MEG; PET, SPECT, fMRI, fNIRS) to investigate executive dysfunction correlates in PPA. Results: Findings from nine articles including a total number of 111 individuals with PPA met our inclusion criteria and were synthesized. Although research on the neural correlates of EF deficits is scarce, MEG studies revealed widespread oscillatory slowing, with increased delta and decreased alpha power, where alterations in alpha, theta, and beta activities were significant predictors of executive function deficits. PET findings demonstrated significant correlations between executive dysfunction and hypometabolism in frontal brain regions. fMRI results indicated elevated homotopic connectivity in PPA patients, with a broader and more anterior distribution of abnormal hippocampal connections of which were associated with reduced executive performance. Conclusion: Our study provides indirect support for the assumption regarding the significance of the frontal regions and inferior frontal junction in executive control and demonstrates that neurophysiological tools can be a useful aid to further investigate clinical-neurophysiological correlations in PPA. In view of the importance of neck strength training and the lack of adequate training equipment, this study designed a new oscillating hydraulic trainer (OHT) of neck based on oscillating hydraulic damper. We used surface electromyography (sEMG) and subjective ratings to evaluate the neck OHT and compared the results with a simple hat trainer (HATT) and traditional weight trainer (TWT) to verify the feasibility and validity of the OHT. Under similar exercise conditions, 12 subjects performed a set of neck flexion and extension exercise with these 3 trainers. The sEMG signals of targeted muscles were collected in real time, and subjects were asked to complete subjective evaluations of product usability after exercise. The results showed that the root mean square (RMS%) of sEMG indicated that the OHT could provide two-way resistance and train the flexors and extensors simultaneously. The overall degree of muscle activation with OHT was higher than that with the other two trainers in one movement cycle. In terms of resistance characteristics exhibited by the sEMG waveform, duration (D) with OHT was significantly longer than HATT and TWT when exercising at a high speed, while Peak Timing (PT) was later. The ratings of product usability and performing usability of OHT were remarkably higher than that of HATT and TWT. Based on the above results, the OHT was proved to be more suitable for strength training, such as neck muscles, which were getting more attention gradually, but lacked mature and special training equipment. Founded in 2016 at Université de Montréal, Ensemble d'oscillateurs (French for "Oscillator Ensemble") brings together 10 musicians around old analog test equipment oscillators that produce audio sine waves. The ensemble performs new compositions while also arranging early electronic pieces. In parallel, the project has developed itself as a space to gather information and reflect on sine wave–based music. In this article, the author presents some of the key considerations and challenges in the formation of Ensemble d'oscillateurs. Based on observations made throughout the development of a body of work using these audio oscillators, he then aims to open a discussion on some aspects of the historical trajectory of the use of sine waves in modern music. The purpose of this study was to validate measures of vertical oscillation (VO) and ground contact time (GCT) derived from a commercially-available, torso-mounted accelerometer compared with single marker kinematics and kinetic ground reaction force (GRF) data. Twenty-two semi-elite runners ran on an instrumented treadmill while GRF data (1000 Hz) and three-dimensional kinematics (200 Hz) were collected for 60 s across 5 different running speeds ranging from 2.7 to 3.9 m/s. Measurement agreement was assessed by Bland-Altman plots with 95% limits of agreement and by concordance correlation coefficient (CCC). The accelerometer had excellent CCC agreement (> 0.97) with marker kinematics, but only moderate agreement, and overestimated measures between 16.27 mm to 17.56 mm compared with GRF VO measures. The GCT measures from the accelerometer had very good CCC agreement with GRF data, with less than 6 ms of mean bias at higher speeds. These results indicate a torso-mounted accelerometer provides valid and accurate measures of torso-segment VO, but both a marker placed on the torso and the accelerometer yield systematic overestimations of center of mass VO. Context: Hamstring musculotendinous stiffness (MTS) is associated with lower-extremity injury risk (ie, hamstring strain, anterior cruciate ligament injury) and is commonly assessed using the damped oscillatory technique. However, despite a preponderance of studies that measure MTS reliably in laboratory settings, there are no valid clinical measurement tools. A valid clinical measurement technique is needed to assess MTS and permit identification of individuals at heightened risk of injury and track rehabilitation progress. Objective: To determine the validity and reliability of the Myotonometer for measuring active hamstring MTS. Design: Descriptive laboratory study. Setting: Laboratory. Participants: 33 healthy participants (15 men, age 21.33 ± 2.94 y, height 172.03 ± 16.36 cm, mass 74.21 ± 16.36 kg). Main Outcome Measures: Hamstring MTS was assessed using the damped oscillatory technique and the Myotonometer. Intraclass correlations were used to determine the intrasession, intersession, and interrater reliability of the Myotonometer. Criterion validity was assessed via Pearson product-moment correlation between MTS measures obtained from the Myotonometer and from the damped oscillatory technique. Results: The Myotonometer demonstrated good intrasession (ICC3,1 = .807) and interrater reliability (ICC2,k = .830) and moderate intersession reliability (ICC2,k = .693). However, it did not provide a valid measurement of MTS compared with the damped oscillatory technique (r = .346, P = .061). Conclusions: The Myotonometer does not provide a valid measure of active hamstring MTS. Although the Myotonometer does not measure active MTS, it possesses good reliability and portability and could be used clinically to measure tissue compliance, muscle tone, or spasticity associated with multiple musculoskeletal disorders. Objectives: The objective of this study was to begin to measure the prevalence of elevated hearing thresholds in Ethiopia, with audiometric equipment, including bone oscillators and tympanometers. To that end Ethiopian nationals were trained in audiometric techniques to obtain sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and conductive hearing loss (CHL) rates in school age children. Methods: Five mainstreamed public grade schools in northern Ethiopia were the sites for audiometry campaigns examining 1351 children and testing them with behavioral audiometry. Results: Seven percent of students had SNHL > 20 dB in at least 1 frequency in at least 1 ear, and 0.6% of ears had SNHL > 50 dB. Eighteen percent8% of students had CHL > 20 dB in 1 or both ears. The frequency with the highest incidence of elevated pure tone thresholds was at 8000 Hz. Seven percent of students had an air bone gap at 2000 and/or 4000 Hz of at least 15 dB. Air bone gap is not obtained at 8000 Hz. There were 22 perforated tympanic membranes in 17 children (0.8% of tympanic membranes, 1% of students). Conclusion: This study gives a baseline for the prevalence of hearing loss in school age children in mainstreamed northern Ethiopian schools. We consider a model for an N = N lattice network of weakly coupled neural oscillators with periodic boundary conditions (2D square torus), where the coupling between neurons is assumed to be within a von Neumann neighborhood of size r, denoted as von Neumann r-neighborhood. Using the phase model reduction technique, we study the existence of cluster solutions with constant phase differences (Ψh; Ψv) between adjacent oscillators along the horizontal and vertical directions in our network, where Ψh and Ψv are not necessarily to be identical. Applying the Kronecker product representation and the circulant matrix theory, we develop a novel approach to analyze the stability of cluster solutions with constant phase difference (i.e., Ψh; Ψv are equal). We begin our analysis by deriving the precise conditions for stability of such cluster solutions with von Neumann 1-neighborhood and 2 neighborhood couplings, and then we generalize our result to von Neumann r-neighborhood coupling for arbitrary neighborhood size r ≥ 1. This developed approach for the stability analysis indeed can be extended to an arbitrary coupling in our network. Background Although it is generally believed that blebs represent weaker spots in the walls of intracranial aneurysms (IAs), it is largely unknown which aneurysm characteristics favor their development. Objective To investigate possible associations between aneurysm hemodynamic and geometric characteristics and the development of blebs in intracranial aneurysms. Methods A total of 270 IAs in 199 patients selected for surgical clipping were studied. Blebs were visually identified and interactively marked on patient-specific vascular models constructed from presurgical images. Blebs were then deleted from the vascular reconstruction to approximate the aneurysm before bleb formation. Computational fluid dynamics studies were performed in these models and in cases without blebs. Hemodynamic and geometric characteristics of aneurysms with and without blebs were compared. Results A total of 173 aneurysms had no blebs, while 97 aneurysms had a total of 122 blebs. Aneurysms favoring bleb formation had stronger (p<0.0001) and more concentrated inflow jets (p<0.0001), higher flow velocity (p=0.0061), more complex (p<0.0001) and unstable (p=0.0157) flow patterns, larger maximum wall shear stress (WSS; p<0.0001), more concentrated (p=0.0005) and oscillatory (p=0.0004) WSS distribution, and a more heterogeneous WSS field (p<0.0001), than aneurysms without blebs. They were also larger (p<0.0001), more elongated (p<0.0001), had wider necks (p=0.0002), and more distorted and irregular shapes (p<0.0001). Conclusions Strong and concentrated inflow jets, high-speed, complex, and unstable flow patterns, and concentrated, oscillatory, and heterogeneous WSS patterns favor the formation of blebs in IAs. Blebs are more likely to form in large, elongated, and irregularly shaped aneurysms. BACKGROUND: Air-flow oscillations generated by exhaling through oscillatory positive expiratory pressure (OPEP) devices favor airway clearance. Variations in mechanical properties between different devices may influence therapeutic efficacy. The objective of this study was to assess mechanical properties in vitro and to compare the performance of 6 OPEP devices at different resistance levels under active expiratory flow patterns. METHODS: 4 gravity-dependent OPEP devices (ie, Flutter, Gelomuc, Pari O-PEP, Shaker Medic Plus) and 2 gravity-independent OPEP devices (ie, Acapella Choice and Aerobika) were each tested at low, medium, and high resistance settings. All devices were independently connected to a pulmonary waveform generator that reproduced active exhalation flows. Expiratory flow-volume curves were retrieved from 4 subjects with different stages of obstruction severity and were scaled according to either peak expiratory flow (4, 6, and 8 L/s) or volumes (2, 3 and 4 L), thus amounting to 24 active exhalations. Resulting waveforms were divided into 4 parts and the 2 middle parts were used to extract the following mechanical data: positive expiratory pressure (PEP), maximum expiratory pressure (Ppeak), oscillation frequency, and flow oscillation amplitude. The percentage of tests achieving oscillation frequencies > 12 Hz and PEP > 10 cm H2O was calculated for each device. RESULTS: Mechanistic effects of the Acapella, Aerobika, and Shaker devices were not comparable. The Flutter, Gelomuc, and Pari devices behaved similarly and achieved more tests with optimum oscillation frequency and PEP values than the other devices. These 3 devices also produced the highest oscillation amplitudes at the low-resistance level, whereas the Aerobika elicited higher and consistent oscillation amplitudes at medium and high resistance settings. CONCLUSIONS: Operational parameters differed between and within devices, yet the Flutter, Gelomuc, and Pari devices were similar in many aspects. We propose a carbon nanotube oscillator that is composed of a cantilever inner tube and a short outer tube. When the inner tube vibrates, the centrifugal force and the van der Waals force drive the outer tube to oscillate along the inner tube, which means that the oscillator can simultaneously output two frequencies. The operation frequencies of the oscillator may be tunable in a wide range (from tens of gigahertz to more than 100 GHz) by controlling the initial conditions. The combination of tunability and high-frequency operation makes the oscillators promising for a variety of scientific and technological applications. A generalized effective fitting Hamiltonian is tested against a model system of highly excited coupled Morse oscillators. At energies approaching dissociation, a very few resonance couplings in addition to the standard 1:1 and 2:2 couplings of the Darling–Dennison Hamiltonian suffice to fit the spectrum and match the large-scale features of the mixed regular and chaotic phase spaces, consisting of resonance zones organized around periodic orbits of low order that break the total polyad action. We report on the low frequency [1/f and generation-recombination (GR)] noise in InAlAs/InGaAs modulation doped field effect transistors with a 50-nm gate length. The characteristic capture and emission times of the GR noise depended on the gate voltage. Measurements of the noise as a function of the gate voltage showed that the gate leakage current, contacts, and ungated sections of the channel did not contribute to the 1/f noise. The gate voltage dependence of the 1/f noise agreed well with the model of number of carriers fluctuations as a source of the 1/f noise. An effective density of traps responsible for the 1/f noise was found to be Deff≈2.7×1012 cm-2 eV-1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A model of a nanopaddle oscillator is developed to determine the resonant frequency (or the modulus of elasticity by inference from a measurement of the resonant frequency). Also modeled is the nonlinear stiffness of the oscillator and its nonlinear response. The approach is based upon a modal expansion of the elastic deformation of the oscillator and a Lagrangian representation. The article explores why is the infant placed on a High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV) set primarily at a bias flow (BF), and as a respiratory therapist in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Topics include parameter set by the clinician because it is part of the oscillator peruse calibration; and increased bias gas flow will increase airway pressure, improving oxygenation with different bias flows that a practitioner may select based on the potential age range.

Background. High-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) remains an option for the management of critically ill children when conventional mechanical ventilation fails. However, its use is not widespread, and there is wide variability reported with respect to how it is used. Objectives. To describe the frequency, indications, settings and outcomes of HFOV use among paediatric patients with a primary respiratory disorder admitted to a tertiary paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Methods. The study was a 2-year, single-centre, retrospective chart review. Results. Thirty-four (32.7%) patients were managed with HFOV in the PICU during the study period. Thirty-three of the 34 patients had paediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome. Indications for HFOV were inadequate oxygenation in 17 patients (50%), and refractory respiratory acidosis in 15 patients (44.1%) (2 patients did not fit into either category). Approaches to the setting of HFOV varied considerably, particularly with respect to initial pressure around the airways. HFOV was effective at improving both oxygenation, with a median (interquartile range (IQR)) decrease in oxygenation index of 6.34 (5.0 - 9.5), and ventilation with a the median decrease in PaCO2 of 67.6 (46.2 - 105.7) mmHg after 24 hours. Overall mortality was 29.4% in the HFOV group, which is consistent with other studies. Conclusion. HFOV remains an effective rescue ventilatory strategy, which resulted in rapid and sustained improvement in gas exchange in patients with severe hypoxaemia and/or severe respiratory acidosis, particularly in the absence of extracorporeal support. However, the variability in practice and the adverse effects described highlight the need for future high-quality randomised controlled trials to allow for development of meaningful guidelines to optimise HFOV use. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of diplophonia using an auditory perception and multimodal simultaneous examination, which included sound waveform analysis, electroglottography (EGG), digital kymography (DKG), and 2-dimensional scanning digital kymography (2D DKG). Additionally, we compared the diagnostic accuracy of each method using a binary classifier in confusion matrix and convenience of discrimination, based on the time required for interpretation. Method: One normophonic male, 12 patients with diplophonia, and 12 dysphonia patients without diplophonia were enrolled. A multimodal simultaneous evaluation was used to analyze the vibration pattern of diplophonia. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, area under the curve, and interpretation time were used to compare the various diagnostic methods. Discrimination was determined by 3 raters. Results: There are 3 types of asymmetric vibratory patterns in diplophonia. The types are based on the oscillators vibrating at different frequencies: asymmetry of the left and right cords (6 subjects with unilateral palsy and 1 subject with vocal polyps), asymmetry of anterior and posterior cords (2 subjects with vocal polyps), and asymmetry of true and false cords (3 subjects with muscle tension dysphonia). All evaluation methods were useful as diagnostic tools, with all areas under the curve > .70. The diagnostic accuracy was highest with DKG (95.83%), followed by 2D DKG (83.33%), EGG (81.94%), auditory-perceptual evaluation (80.56%), and sound waveform (77.78%). The interpretation time was the shortest for auditory-perceptual evaluation (6.07 ± 1.34 s), followed by 2D DKG (10.04 ± 3.00 s), EGG (12.49 ± 2.76 s), and DKG (13.53 ± 2.60 s). Conclusions: Auditory-perceptual judgment was the easiest and fastest method for experienced raters, but its diagnostic accuracy was lower than that of DKG or 2D DKG. The diagnostic accuracy of DKG was the highest, but 2D DKG allowed rapid interpretation and showed relatively high diagnostic accuracy, except in cases with space-occupying lesions. Objective: To develop and validate an automated smartphone app that determines bone-conduction pure-tone thresholds. Methods: A novel app, called EarBone, was developed as an automated test to determine best-cochlea pure-tone boneconduction thresholds using a smartphone driving a professional-grade bone oscillator. Adult, English-speaking patients who were undergoing audiometric assessment by audiologists at an academic health system as part of their prescribed care were invited to use the EarBone app. Best-ear bone-conduction thresholds determined by the app and the gold standard audiologist were compared. Results: Forty subjects with varied hearing thresholds were tested. Sixty-one percent of app-determined thresholds were within 5 dB of audiologist-determined thresholds, and 79% were within 10 dB. Nearly all subjects required assistance with placing the bone oscillator on their mastoid. Conclusion: Best-cochlea bone-conduction thresholds determined by the EarBone automated smartphone audiometry app approximate those determined by an audiologist. This serves as a proof of concept for automated smartphone-based bone-conduction threshold testing. High frequency oscillatory ventilation is often used for lung support in premature neonates suffering from respiratory distress syndrome. Despite its broad use in neonatal intensive care units, there are to date no accepted protocols for the choice of appropriate ventilation parameter settings. In this context, the underlying mass transport mechanisms are still not fully understood. We revisit the question of flow phenomena under conventional mechanical ventilation and high frequency oscillatory ventilation in an anatomically-inspired model of neonatal conductive airways spanning the first few airway generations. We first perform at true scale in vitro particle image velocimetry measurements of respiratory flow patterns. Next, we explore in silico convective mass transport in computational fluid dynamics simulations by implementing Lagrangian tracking of tracer boli, where the ventilatory flow rate is fixed. Particle image velocimetry measurements at eight representative phase angles of a breathing cycle reveal similar flow patterns at peak velocity and during deceleration phases for conventional mechanical ventilation and high frequency oscillatory ventilation. Characteristic differences occur during the acceleration and flow reversal phases. Net displacements of the tracer particles rapidly reach asymptotic behaviour over cumulative breathing cycles and suggest a linear relation between tidal volume and convective mass transport. The linear relation observed suggests that differences in flow characteristics between conventional mechanical ventilation and high frequency oscillatory ventilation conditions do not substantially influence convective mass transport mechanisms. Lower tidal volumes thus cannot be compensated straightforwardly by selecting higher frequencies to maintain similar ventilation efficiencies. • First study on flow phenomena in neonatal airways under High Frequency Ventilation. • Convective transport between Conventional and High Frequency Ventilation is vastly similar. • Low tidal volumes at high frequencies must be carefully chosen to ensure sufficient ventilation. The biomechanical properties of the lung are necessarily dependent on its structure and function, both of which are complex and change over time and space. This makes in vivo evaluation of lung biomechanics and a deep understanding of lung biomarkers, very challenging. In patients and animal models of lung disease, in vivo evaluations of lung structure and function are typically made at the mouth and include spirometry, multiple-breath gas washout tests and the forced oscillation technique. These techniques, and the biomarkers they provide, incorporate the properties of the whole organ system including the parenchyma, large and small airways, mouth, diaphragm and intercostal muscles. Unfortunately, these well-established measurements mask regional differences, limiting their ability to probe the lung's gross and micro-biomechanical properties which vary widely throughout the organ and its subcompartments. Pulmonary imaging has the advantage in providing regional, non-invasive measurements of healthy and diseased lung, in vivo. Here we summarize well-established and emerging lung imaging tools and biomarkers and how they may be used to generate lung biomechanical measurements. We review well-established and emerging lung anatomical, microstructural and functional imaging biomarkers generated using synchrotron x-ray tomographic-microscopy (SRXTM), micro-x-ray computed-tomography (micro-CT), clinical CT as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Pulmonary imaging provides measurements of lung structure, function and biomechanics with high spatial and temporal resolution. Imaging biomarkers that reflect the biomechanical properties of the lung are now being validated to provide a deeper understanding of the lung that cannot be achieved using measurements made at the mouth. The response of chirped oscillators under the injection of independent signals, for spectrum sensing in cognitive radio, and under self-injection, for radio frequency identification, is analyzed in detail. The investigation is performed by means of a semianalytical formulation, based on a realistic modeling of the free-running oscillator, extracted from harmonic-balance simulations or from experimental measurements, through a new characterization technique. In the new formulation, the oscillator is linearized about a free-running solution that varies with the control voltage. This enables its application to oscillators having a frequency characteristic that deviates from the linear one. In the case of injection by independent signals, the two-scale envelope-domain formulation will enable an efficient handling of the difference between the slow chirp frequency and the beat frequency. The input carriers can be detected from their dynamic synchronization intervals or, at lower input-power levels, from the dynamics of the beat frequency. Noise perturbations are introduced into the formulation, which enables an estimation of the minimum detectable signal. In the case of a self-injected oscillator for radio frequency identification, an insightful formulation is derived to predict the propagation and tag-resonance effects on the instantaneous oscillation frequency. We investigate the emergence of chimera and cluster states possessing asymmetric dynamics in globally coupled systems, where the trajectories of oscillators belonging to different subpopulations exhibit different dynamical properties. In an asymmetric chimera state, the trajectory of an element in the synchronized subset is stationary or periodic, while that of an oscillator in the desynchronized subset is chaotic. In an asymmetric cluster state, the periods of the trajectories of elements belonging to different clusters are different. We consider a network of globally coupled chaotic maps as a simple model for the occurrence of such asymmetric states in spatiotemporal systems. We employ the analogy between a single map subject to a constant drive and the effective local dynamics in the globally coupled map system to elucidate the mechanisms for the emergence of asymmetric chimera and cluster states in the latter system. By obtaining the dynamical responses of the driven map, we establish a condition for the equivalence of the dynamics of the driven map and that of the system of globally coupled maps. Measure Synchronization (MS) is the generalization of synchrony to Hamiltonian Systems. Partial measure synchronization (PMS) and complete measure synchronization in a system of three nonlinearly coupled one-dimensional oscillators have been investigated for different initial conditions on the basis of numerical computation. The system is governed by the classical SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs (YMH) Hamiltonian with three degrees of freedom. Various transitions in the quasiperiodic (QP) region, namely, QP unsynchronized to PMS, PMS to PMS, and PMS to chaos are identified through the average bare energies and interaction energies route maps as the coupling strength is varied. The transition from quasiperiodicity to chaos is seen to be associated with a gradual transition to complete chaotic measure synchronization (CMS) which is followed by chaotic unsynchronized states, the most stable state in this case. The analyses illustrate the dependence on initial conditions. The explanation of the behavior in the QP regime is sought from the power spectral analysis. The existence of PMS is confirmed using the order parameter M (here M α β for different combination pairs of oscillators), best suited to identify MS in coupled two-oscillator systems, and this definition is extended to obtain a new order parameter, M 3 , aiding to distinguish complete MS of three oscillators from other forms of motion. The study of wavelet coefficient spectra sheds new light on the relative phase information of the oscillators in the QP PMS regions, also highlighting the intertwined role played by the various frequency components and their amplitudes as they vary temporally. Furthermore, this technique helps to draw a sharp distinction between CMS and chaotic unsynchronized states. Abstract: A GaN HEMT oscillator implemented with the WIN 0.25 μm GaN HEMT technology is designed. The oscillator consists of two HEMT amplifiers with cross‐coupled feedback topology. With the supply voltage of VDD = 0.4 V, the GaN VCO current and power consumption of the oscillator are 6.673 mA and 2.669 mW, respectively. The oscillator can generate differential signal at 4.7 GHz and it also supplies output power − 5.3 dBm. At 1 MHz frequency offset from the carrier the phase noise is −121.77 dBc/Hz. This paper discusses the issues of radiation exposure that especially occur on the Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated on Satellite (DORIS) ultrastable oscillator (USO) that has been placed on the Jason-2 oceanography mission as the reference clock. We have studied the frequency response of the Jason-2 USO (launched in June 2008, at 66° of inclination and 1336 km of altitude) over 8.5 years. This is the only mission that provides different sources of data, internal and external, which permit a precise description of the oscillator behavior using several assumptions. While the ICARE-NG instrument provided continuous measurement of the electron and the proton fluxes, the Time Transfer by Laser Link (T2L2) experiment demonstrated its ability to monitor the “reading” of the oscillator at a level of a few parts in 10−13 with respect to a ground network of laser stations equipped with atomic clocks. From these inputs, and also environmental parameters such as the orbit, the attitude law of the platform, and the temperature of the oscillator, we have developed a complete physical model of the DORIS USO that fits the data at less than $0.8\times 10^{-12}$ slightly below the threshold of 10−12 that limits the use of the DORIS data in current space geodesy analyses. Inspired by calcium activity in astrocytes, which is different in the cell body and thick branches on the one hand and thin branchlets and leaflets on the other hand, we formulate a concept of spatially partitioned oscillators. These are inhomogeneous media with regions having different excitability properties, with a global dynamics governed by spatial configuration of such regions. Due to a high surface-to-volume ratio, calcium dynamics in astrocytic leaflets is dominated by transmembrane currents, while somatic calcium dynamics relies on exchange with intracellular stores, mediated by IP 3 , which is in turn synthesized in the space nearby the plasma membrane. Reciprocal coupling via diffusion of calcium and IP 3 between the two regions makes the spatial configuration an essential contributor to overall dynamics. Due to these features, the mechanisms governing the pattern formation of calcium dynamics differ from classical excitable systems with noise or from networks of clustered oscillators. Background: Wearable devices validly assess spatiotemporal running parameters (cadence, vertical oscillation and ground contact time), but the relationship between these parameters and lower limb loading parameters (loading rate, peak vertical ground reaction force [vGRF] and braking impulse) is unknown. Purpose: To characterize changes in lower limb loading parameters in runners instructed to run with increased cadence or low vertical oscillation, and to determine whether the change in spatiotemporal parameters predicted the changes in lower limb loading parameters. Study Design: Cross Sectional Cohort Study Methods: Twenty healthy runners completed three running trials in three conditions: baseline, high cadence, and low vertical oscillation. Spatiotemporal parameters were measured with a wearable device and lower limb loading was measured using an instrumented treadmill. Spatiotemporal and loading parameters were analyzed between running conditions via a repeated measure ANOVA. A hierarchical regression model was used to determine if changes in spatiotemporal parameters predicted the change of loading parameters during conditions. Results: High cadence and low oscillation conditions reduced average vertical loading rate (p = 0.013 and p = 0.002, respectively), instantaneous vertical loading rate (p = 0.022 and p = 0.001, respectively), and peak vGRF (p = 0.025 and p < 0.001, respectively). Braking impulse was significantly lower in the high cadence condition compared to baseline (p < 0.001), but not during the low oscillation (p = 1.000). The increase in cadence during the high cadence condition predicted the reduction of instantaneous vertical loading rate (r² = 0.213, p = 0.041) and braking impulse (r² = 0.279, p = 0.017). The reduction in vertical oscillation was more predictive of the change of peak vGRF in both running conditions (high cadence, r² = 0.436, p = 0.009; low oscillation r² = 0.748, p < 0.001). Conclusion: While both higher cadence and lower vertical oscillation resulted in reduced loading rates during running, cueing to reduce vertical oscillation was more successful in reducing peak vGRF and only the higher cadence condition reduced braking impulse. These findings will inform clinicians who wish to use wearable devices for running gait modification to select injury- specific gait retraining cues. We consider small networks of instantaneously coupled theta neurons. For inhibitory coupling and fixed parameter values, some initial conditions give chaotic solutions while others give quasiperiodic ones. This behaviour seems to result from the reversibility of the equations governing the networks’ dynamics. We investigate the robustness of the chaotic behaviour with respect to changes in initial conditions and parameters and find the behaviour to be quite robust as long as the reversibility of the system is preserved. In his classical work, Kuramoto analytically described the onset of synchronization in all-to-all coupled networks of phase oscillators with random intrinsic frequencies. Specifically, he identified a critical value of the coupling strength, at which the incoherent state loses stability and a gradual build-up of coherence begins. Recently, Kuramoto’s scenario was shown to hold for a large class of coupled systems on convergent families of deterministic and random graphs [Chiba and Medvedev, “The mean field analysis of the Kuramoto model on graphs. Guided by these results, in the present work, we study several model problems illustrating the link between network topology and synchronization in coupled dynamical systems. First, we identify several families of graphs, for which the transition to synchronization in the Kuramoto model starts at the same critical value of the coupling strength and proceeds in a similar manner. These examples include Erdős-Rényi random graphs, Paley graphs, complete bipartite graphs, and certain stochastic block graphs. These examples illustrate that some rather simple structural properties such as the volume of the graph may determine the onset of synchronization, while finer structural features may affect only higher order statistics of the transition to synchronization. Furthermore, we study the transition to synchronization in the Kuramoto model on power law and small-world random graphs. The former family of graphs endows the Kuramoto model with very good synchronizability: the synchronization threshold can be made arbitrarily low by varying the parameter of the power law degree distribution. For the Kuramoto model on small-world graphs, in addition to the transition to synchronization, we identify a new bifurcation leading to stable random twisted states. We study rare phase slips due to noise in synchronized Kuramoto oscillator networks. In the small-noise limit, we demonstrate that slips occur via large fluctuations to saddle phase-locked states. For tree topologies, slips appear between subgraphs that become disconnected at a saddle-node bifurcation, where phase-locked states lose stability generically. This pattern is demonstrated for sparse networks with several examples. Scaling laws are derived and compared for different tree topologies. On the other hand, for dense networks slips occur between oscillators on the edges of the frequency distribution. If the distribution is discrete, the probability-exponent for large fluctuations to occur scales linearly with the system size. However, if the distribution is continuous, the probability is a constant in the large network limit, as individual oscillators fluctuate to saddles while all others remain fixed. Kuramoto oscillators are widely used to explain collective phenomena in networks of coupled oscillatory units. We show that simple networks of two populations with a generic coupling scheme, where both coupling strengths and phase lags between and within populations are distinct, can exhibit chaotic dynamics as conjectured by Ott and Antonsen [Chaos 18, 037113 (2008)]. These chaotic mean-field dynamics arise universally across network size, from the continuum limit of infinitely many oscillators down to very small networks with just two oscillators per population. BACKGROUND: Sensitive flow or pressure triggers are usually applied to improve ventilator response time. Conversely, too sensitive triggers can incur risk of auto-triggering, a type of asynchrony in which a breath is triggered without inspiratory muscle activity. A frequent cause of auto-triggering is cardiogenic oscillations, characterized by cyclical variations in pressure and flow waveforms caused by cardiac contractions. Our goal was to test trigger performance and capacity to abolish auto-triggering in 5 different ICU ventilators using different simulated levels of cardiogenic oscillations. METHODS: A mechanical breathing simulator was used to test 5 different ICU ventilators' trigger response time and capacity to minimize auto-triggering in conditions with 0, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 cm H2O cardiogenic oscillation. Each ventilator was evaluated until an ideal trigger was found (the most sensitive that abolished auto-triggering). When the least sensitive flow trigger was unable to avoid auto-triggering, a pressure trigger was used. We compared time delay, airway pressure drop until triggering, and work of breathing before each trigger, all at the ideal trigger level for each cardiogenic oscillation amplitude. We also assessed the proportion of auto-triggered breaths in the whole range of trigger levels tested. RESULTS: Larger cardiogenic oscillations were associated with more frequent auto-triggering. To avoid auto-triggering, less sensitive triggers were required (+2.51 L/min per 1 cm H2O increase in cardiogenic oscillation; 95%CI 2.26 -2.76, P<.001). Time delay increased with larger cardiogenic oscillations, because less sensitive trigger levels were required to abolish auto-triggering (4.79-ms increase per 1 L/min increment on flow trigger). CONCLUSIONS: More sensitive triggers led to faster ventilator response, but also to more frequent auto-triggering. To avoid auto-triggering, less sensitive triggers were required, with consequent slower trigger response. To compare trigger performance in a scenario that more closely represents clinical practice, evaluation of the tradeoff between time delay and frequency of autotriggering should be considered. Background: The precise mechanisms underlying tinnitus perception and distress are still not fully understood. A recent proposition is that auditory prediction errors and related memory representations may play a role in driving tinnitus perception. It is of interest to further explore this. Purpose: To obtain a comprehensive narrative synthesis of current research in relation to auditory prediction and its potential role in tinnitus perception and severity. Research Design: A narrative review methodological framework was followed. Data Collection and Analysis: The key words Prediction Auditory, Memory Prediction Auditory, Tinnitus AND Memory, Tinnitus AND Prediction in Article Title, Abstract, and Keywords were extensively searched on four databases: PubMed, Scopus, SpringerLink, and PsychINFO. All study types were selected from 2000--2016 (end of 2016) and had the following exclusion criteria applied: minimum age of participants,18, nonhuman participants, and article not available in English. Reference lists of articles were reviewed to identify any further relevant studies. Articles were short listed based on title relevance. Study Sample: After reading the abstracts and with consensus made between coauthors, a total of 114 studies were selected for charting data. Results: The hierarchical predictive coding model based on the Bayesian brain hypothesis, attentional modulation and top-down feedback serves as the fundamental framework in current literature for how auditory prediction may occur. Predictions are integral to speech and music processing, as well as in sequential processing and identification of auditory objects during auditory streaming. Although deviant responses are observable from middle latency time ranges, the mismatch negativity (MMN) waveform is the most commonly studied electrophysiological index of auditory irregularity detection. However, limitations may apply when interpreting findings because of the debatable origin of the MMN and its restricted ability to model real-life, more complex auditory phenomenon. Cortical oscillatory band activity may act as neurophysiological substrates for auditory prediction. Tinnitus has been modeled as an auditory object which may demonstrate incomplete processing during auditory scene analysis resulting in tinnitus salience and therefore difficulty in habituation. Within the electrophysiological domain, there is currently mixed evidence regarding oscillatory band changes in tinnitus. BACKGROUND: COPD is characterized by expiratory flow limitation, which results in symptomatic dyspnea and reduced exercise capacity. Changes in breathing mechanics mean the respiratory muscles are unable to respond to the ventilatory demands, increasing the sensation of dyspnea. A high-frequency oscillating device has been developed to improve dyspnea in patients with COPD. We conducted a feasibility trial to gain insight into the potential for recruitment, retention, and study design for a future randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Symptomatic subjects with COPD were included on the basis of a Medical Research Council (MRC) score ≥ 3 and FEV1/FVC < 0.70). Patients were excluded if they received pulmonary rehabilitation within the last 6 months. The intervention employed the device for 8 weeks, 3 times daily. Clinical outcomes included the MRC score, maximal expiratory and inspiratory pressures (PEmax/PImax), the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT), and the endurance shuttle walk test (ESWT). RESULTS: We successfully recruited 23 subjects with established COPD (65.2% male, mean age 65 ± 5.03 y, mean % predicted FEV1 43.9 ± 16, mean FEV1/FVC ratio 0.46 ± 0.13, and median [interquartile range] MRC 4 [3-5]). There was a significant change in MRC from 4 to 3 pre to post intervention (P = .003). There was a statistically significant difference in PEmax P < .008 and PImax P = .044. There were no significant differences observed in the ISWT or ESWT. CONCLUSIONS: This study design appeared feasible to proceed to a clinical effectiveness trial. The use of the device for 8 weeks showed a significant improvement in PEmax, PImax, and reduced symptomatic dyspnea on the MRC dyspnea score. Radio frequency (RF) breakdown can result in pulse shortening and severely limits the performance of high-power microwave (HPM) generators. In this paper, the initial stage of RF breakdown in HPM generators with a strong external guiding magnetic field has been carefully analyzed. It is thought that the initial breakdown process involves electron emission induced by an intense local field, electron acceleration in the electric field, and electron bombardment on the structure’s surfaces. Strong external guiding magnetic fields play a key role in the RF breakdown process of HPM generators. They concentrate the impact energy and make it more destructive. To suppress RF breakdown, feasible solutions include lowering the local field strength, decreasing the energy of the field-emitted electrons obtained from the RF field, reducing the deposited energy density, and improving the material’s resistance to electron bombardment. BACKGROUND: With increased survival rates and the consequent emergence of an adult population with cystic fibrosis (CF), developing novel tools for periodic evaluations of these patients has become a new challenge. Thus, we sought to determine the contribution of lung-volume quantification using multidetector computed tomography (CT) in adults with CF and to investigate the association between structural changes and functional abnormalities. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in which 21 adults with CF and 22 control subjects underwent lung-volume quantification using multidetector CT. Voxel densities were divided into 4 bands: -1,000 to -900 Hounsfield units (HU) (hyperaerated region), -900 to -500 HU (normally aerated region), -500 to - 100 HU (poorly aerated region), and -100 to 100 HU (non-aerated region). In addition, all participants performed pulmonary function tests including spirometry, body plethysmography, diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide, and the forced oscillation technique. RESULTS: Adults with CF had more non-aerated regions and poorly aerated regions with lung-volume quantification using multidetector CT than controls. Despite these abnormalities, total lung volume measured by lung-volume quantification using multidetector CT did not differ between subjects and controls. Total lung capacity (TLC) measured by body plethysmography correlated with both total lung volume (rs = 0.71, P < .001) and total air volume (rs = 0.71, P < .001) as measured with lungvolume quantification using multidetector CT. While the hyperaerated regions correlated with the functional markers of gas retention in the lungs (increased residual volume (RV) and RV/TLC ratio), the poorly aerated regions correlated with the resistive parameters measured by the forced oscillation technique (increased intercept resistance and mean resistance). We also observed a correlation between normally aerated regions and highest pulmonary diffusion values (rs = 0.68, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: In adults with CF, lung-volume quantification using multidetector CT can destimate the lung volumes of compartments with different densities and determine the aerated and non-aerated contents of the lungs; furthermore, lung-volume quantification using multidetector CT is clearly related to pulmonary function parameters. INTRODUCTION: The effectiveness of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) in the pediatric hematopoietic cell transplant patient has not been established. We sought to identify current practice patterns of HFOV, investigate parameters during HFOV and their association with mortality, and compare the use of HFOV to conventional mechanical ventilation in severe pediatric ARDS. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of a multi-center database of pediatric and young adult allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant subjects requiring invasive mechanical ventilation for critical illness from 2009 through 2014. Twelve United States pediatric centers contributed data. Continuous variables were compared using a Wilcoxon rank-sum test or a Kruskal-Wallis analysis. For categorical variables, univariate analysis with logistic regression was performed. RESULTS: The database contains 222 patients, of which 85 subjects were managed with HFOV. Of this HFOV cohort, the overall pediatric ICU survival was 23.5% (n = 20). HFOV survivors were transitioned to HFOV at a lower oxygenation index than nonsurvivors (25.6, interquartile range 21.1-36.8, vs 37.2, interquartile range 26.5-52.2, P = .046). Survivors were transitioned to HFOV earlier in the course of mechanical ventilation, (day 0 vs day 2, P = .002). No subject survived who was transitioned to HFOV after 1 week of invasive mechanical ventilation. We compared subjects with severe pediatric ARDS treated only with conventional mechanical ventilation versus early HFOV (within 2 d of invasive mechanical ventilation) versus late HFOV. There was a trend toward difference in survival (conventional mechanical ventilation 24%, early HFOV 30%, and late HFOV 9%, P = .08). CONCLUSIONS: In this large database of pediatric allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant subjects who had acute respiratory failure requiring invasive mechanical ventilation for critical illness with severe pediatric ARDS, early use of HFOV was associated with improved survival compared to late implementation of HFOV, and the subjects had outcomes similar to those treated only with conventional mechanical ventilation. Organic electronics is one of the most promising technologies for creating flexible electronic devices using low temperature plastic compatible processes. However, contact resistances of organic transistors remain one of the most significant hurdles to achieving high performance circuits in this technology. Short channel devices (<10 μm), essential for industrial applications, typically exhibit only a fraction of the performance promised by the high mobility results achieved in laboratory research on longer channel lengths (a few tens of μm or even longer). In this paper, we present results demonstrating solution processed devices having width-normalised contact resistances of less than 300 Ohm cm and show how these can be made into 5-stage ring oscillator circuits with the highest frequency of 1.08 MHz, corresponding to a stage delay of 93 ns. This is achieved through use of a thin, uniform high performance organic semiconductor (OSC) film made possible through formulation of a small-molecule semiconductor in a high-k binder polymer. The OSC formulation is employed in a fabrication process compatible with mass manufacture, opening up the route to commercial products made from organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) devices with high performance. Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) is a key clinical problem for asthmatic children. Exercise challenge tests, used to confirm EIB, are time consuming and require patient cooperation. The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic values of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), impulse oscillometry (IOS), and plethysmography for prediction of EIB in children with well-controlled asthma. Fifty-nine children with allergic asthma aged 6-18 years were included in the study. FeNO was measured and all patients underwent spirometry, IOS, and plethysmography. An exercise challenge test was performed to assess EIB. EIB was confirmed with an exercise challenge test in 20 (33.9%) patients. Baseline FeNO levels were significantly higher in the group with EIB ( P = 0.003). Resistance at 5 Hz (R5) and frequency dependence of resistance (R5-R20) in IOS and total specific airway resistance (SRtot), residual volume (RV), and the ratio of RV to total lung capacity in plethysmography were significantly higher in the group with EIB. In the logistic regression analysis, the higher baseline FeNO, R5-R20, and SRtot values were found to be significantly related to EIB [Odds ratios (OR):1.35 and P = 0.046, OR:1.80, and P = 0.016, and OR:1.10, P = 0.035, respectively]. To differentiate asthmatic children with EIB from those without EIB, the optimal cutoff point for FeNO was 28 ppb [negative predictive value (NPV):86% and positive predictive value (PPV):52%]. An SRtot level lower than 207.6% (NPV:96% and PPV:54%) can be used to exclude EIB. R5-R20 values higher than 15.5% (NPV: 81% and PPV:71%) were associated with EIB in asthmatic children. Baseline SRtot in plethysmography provided the best sensitivity, whereas the baseline R5-R20 in IOS offered the best specificity for EIB. This study suggested that FeNO, IOS, and plethysmography are valuable tools for the assessment of EIB in children with controlled asthma and EIB is strongly correlated to small airway disease markers. Controlled-source audio-frequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT) has developed rapidly in recent years and are widely used in the area of mineral and oil resource exploration as well as other fields. The current theory, numerical simulation, and inversion research are based on the assumption that the underground media have resistivity isotropy. However a large number of rock and mineral physical property tests show the resistivity of underground media is generally anisotropic. With the increasing application of CSAMT, the demand for probe accuracy of practical exploration to complex targets continues to increase. The question of how to evaluate the influence of anisotropic resistivity to CSAMT response is becoming important. To meet the demand for CSAMT response research of resistivity anisotropic media, this paper examines the CSAMT electric equations, derives and realizes a three-dimensional (3D) staggered-grid finite difference numerical simulation method of CSAMT resistivity axial anisotropy. Through building a two-dimensional (2D) resistivity anisotropy geoelectric model, we validate the 3D computation result by comparing it to the result of controlled-source electromagnetic method (CSEM) resistivity anisotropy 2D finite element program. Through simulating a 3D resistivity axial anisotropy geoelectric model, we compare and analyze the responses of equatorial configuration, axial configuration, two oblique sources and tensor source. Desynchronization is a powerful tool to achieve round-robin scheduling, which is crucial in applications as diverse as media access control of communication networks, realization of analog-to-digital converters, and scheduling of traffic flows in intersections. Due to the remarkable scalability and simplicity, pulse-coupled oscillators based desynchronization is receiving increased attention. In this paper, we systematically characterize pulse-coupled oscillators based decentralized phase desynchronization and propose an interaction function that is more general than the existing results. Numerical simulations show that the proposed pulse-based interaction function also has better robustness to pulse losses, time delays, and frequency errors than the existing results.
