Abstract

The article presents a profile of Nicola Roxon, the Australian Minister of Health. The health agenda Roxon proposed following her appointment in 2007 through the creation of the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission (NHHRC) is discussed. The NHHRC has focused on improving health service delivery, creating regional health authorities, and introducing a social insurance system. Roxon discusses her views on whether the federal government should take control of ailing public hospitals. Her efforts to improve health services for the indigenous people of Australia are described.

Abstract

The article reports that Australian Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon has expressed her determination to see nurses acknowledged and working to their full scope of practice in the health system by putting an end to the prejudices they faced. She added that an international paper has called for primary care to be nurse led. She believes that barriers in attitude and workforce structure had prevented the full utilisation of the nursing profession.
