8. Design and Implementation of Nonisolated High Step-Up DC-DC Converter

Abstract

This article presents a novel structure for a high step-up DC-DC converter. The proposed converter offers several advantages, including a simple structure, high voltage gain, high efficiency, reduced voltage stress on the semiconductors, and fewer components. A two-winding coupled inductor has been employed to enhance the output voltage level in this topology. The suggested structure has only one power switch with low ON-state resistance (RDS-ON), reducing power losses. Moreover, the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) and zero-current switching (ZCS) features of the diodes of the proposed converter result have improved overall efficiency. To evaluate and ascertain the enhanced performance of this configuration, the study of different modes of operation, steady-state investigation, and a comparative study between the proposed and other relevant topologies are presented. A laboratory prototype is designed and implemented with an input voltage of 12 V, an output voltage of 150 V, and a 200 W rated power level under a 50 kHz switching frequency. The maximum efficiency of the recommended topology is measured at the rated output power, equal to 96.98%. Also, for an output power range from 50 W to 350 W, the efficiency is obtained higher than 95%.

Abstract

In medium-high power applications, the LCL is the preferred filter topology to attain efficient power conversion. The filter provides a high damping attenuation of -60 dB/decade above the resonance frequency at the cost of a higher order plant, complex parameter design, and, increased vulnerability to un-modeled disturbances. Recently, model predictive control applied to power electronic converters has experienced great interest from researchers. The technique is tailored to the control of complex MIMO systems such as the LCL filter as it allows simultaneous regulation of several state-variables via a user defined cost function. However, the tuning of weighting factors (WFs) within the cost function is not trivial, and in most cases employs an empirical procedure. This paper presents an analytical procedure for tuning of WFs for indirect model predictive current controlled grid-tied converters. The method is based on using analytical closed-form expressions, that relate closed-loop poles of the filter with WFs via physical plant parameters. The presented expressions generalize the tuning of WFs to any arbitrary LCL design. The proposed method is validated by hardware-in-the-loop simulations conducted on PLECS RTBOX 3. Through experimental testing, it is shown that the controller is robust against a wide range of grid impedance variation.

32. Real-time HIL implementation of a single-phase distribution level THSeAF based on D-NPC converter using proportional-resonant controller for power quality platform

Abstract

In this paper a single-phase transformer-less hybrid series active filter (THSeAF) based on duo-neutral-point-clamped (D-NPC) converter to address distribution level power quality is proposed to investigate experimentally the efficiency of the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) implementation for power electronics applications. This benchmark contributes to demonstrating the capability and efficiency of such real-time implementation for smart grid power quality (PQ) analysis which requires fast switching process with small sampling time. Such applications require the compensator to address major power quality issues related to a nonlinear load. This compensator presents an efficient and reliable solution for future grid applications to overcome voltage and current related issues as well as assisting the integration of renewables for a sustainable supply. The controller extracts voltage and current harmonics to be compensated. A proportional and resonant (P + R) regulator produces switching signals for the D-NPC converter. The paper demonstrates the reliability of the HIL simulation for power electronic applications assessing power quality related issues where a wide range of switching frequency is under study. A combination of simulation and real-time results are carried out to validate the performance and viability of the HIL implementation.

Abstract

In this work, a high step-up non-isolated DC-DC converter with a coupled inductor is introduced for renewable applications. The output voltage rate of the proposed structure is efficiently excesses by choosing an appropriate turn's ratio of the coupled inductor. The voltage lift elements are utilized to further increase the voltage gain and also leads to a decrease in the voltage spike through the switch. The produced leakage inductance energy of the coupled inductor can be retrieved which leads to a decrease in the power losses of the suggested converter. Moreover, conduction losses are decreased by utilizing only a single switch with lower ON-state resistance RDS-ON. In order to indicate the proficiency of the recommended structure, technical analysis and the comparison survey with other studies are carried out in the literature. Finally, a laboratory scheme at a 200 V/200 W with 24 V input voltage and 95.8% efficiency is prepared to prove the effectiveness of the suggested converter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This chapter proposes a study of novel power electronic converters for small scale wind energy conversion systems. In this chapter major topologies of power electronic converters that used in wind energy converter systems have been analysed. Various topologies of DC/AC single stage converters such as high boost Z-source inverters (ZSI) have been investigated. New proposed schemes for inverters such as multilevel and Z-source inverters have been studied in this proposed chapter. Multilevel converters are categorized into three major groups according to their topologies which are diode clamped multilevel converters (DCM), cascade multilevel converters (CMC) with multiple isolated dc voltage sources and flying capacitor based multilevel converters (FCMC). Z-source inverters are divided to ZSI, qZSI and trans-ZSI types. Trans-ZSI is mostly used for high step-up single stage conversions.
