1. Using an Electronic Inquiry-Based Learning Context for Enhancing Secondary Stage Students' EFL Fluency

Abstract

The aim of the current study is to investigate how secondary stage students develop their EFL fluency through being exposed to an electronic program based on the inquiry-based learning context. The researcher used two social media means: Telegram and Skype. The participants were 15 secondary stage students in a governmental school for girls in Qena. An interview and a test were designed to measure the students' EFL fluency. An electronic program based on inquiry based learning was designed to develop the students' EFL fluency. The electronic program consisted of ten EFL fluency components. The obtained data was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Wilcoxon test was used to calculate the effect size of the suggested program on promoting the study participants' EFL fluency. The findings revealed that the total mean scores of the participants on the post-administration of the test were higher than their total mean scores on the pre-administration of the test. In addition, the effect size of all EFL fluency components indicated that the program based on electronic inquiry based learning context had a very strong effect on enhancing secondary stage students' EFL fluency components.

2. Development of 'VAScoR': A Rubric to Qualify and Score Responses to the Views of Nature of Science ('VNOS') Questionnaire

Abstract

We report on the development of a rubric to reliably qualify and score responses to the "Views of Nature of Science Questionnaire" (VNOS): The "VNOS Analysis and Scoring Rubric" (VAScoR). The "VAScoR" is designed to (a) provide systematic guidance for the qualitative analysis, and score assignment to nuanced categories, of "VNOS" responses, (b) explicitly scaffold qualitative inferencing and standardize score assignment to substantially lessen the burden of, and variance in, analyzing and scoring the "VNOS," and (c) improve the viability and meaningfulness of cross-study comparisons drawing on "VNOS" data. The rubric adopted the "VNOS's" consensus NOS framework and further delineated core and related elements across 10 target NOS aspects. The "VAScoR's" reliability was examined in two studies that drew on "VNOS" questionnaires completed by 185 preservice secondary science teachers (58% female; 126 undergraduate and 59 graduate students) enrolled over several years in a combined undergraduate and graduate licensure program in a large U.S. Midwestern university. In Study I, "VAScoR" analyses of 86 "VNOS" questionnaires undertaken by a single author were used to examine the rubric's intra-rater reliability, which resulted in a robust Cronbach's alpha value of 0.81. In Study II, analyses by four authors of a randomly generated, overlapping set of 18 questionnaires were used to examine inter-rater reliability, which was supported with substantial consensus among raters as indicated by a Cohen's kappa of 0.71. Further evidence for the "VAScoR's" inter-rater reliability was indicated by moderate to strong consistency among four raters with an overall Pearson's correlation coefficient of 0.82, and coefficient values ranging from 0.77 to 0.89 for six possible rater pairings.

Abstract

Hardware-aware Neural Architecture Search approaches (HW-NAS) automate the design of deep learning architectures, tailored specifically to a given target hardware platform. Yet, these techniques demand substantial computational resources, primarily due to the expensive process of assessing the performance of identified architectures. To alleviate this problem, a recent direction in the literature has employed representation similarity metric for efficiently evaluating architecture performance. Nonetheless, since it is inherently a single objective method, it requires multiple runs to identify the optimal architecture set satisfying the diverse hardware cost constraints, thereby increasing the search cost. Furthermore, simply converting the single objective into a multi-objective approach results in an under-explored architectural search space. In this study, we propose a Multi-Objective method to address the HW-NAS problem, called MO-HDNAS, to identify the trade-off set of architectures in a single run with low computational cost. This is achieved by optimizing three objectives: maximizing the representation similarity metric, minimizing hardware cost, and maximizing the hardware cost diversity. The third objective, i.e. hardware cost diversity, is used to facilitate a better exploration of the architecture search space.
