Environmental monitoring for the detection and regulation of toxic gases is of paramount importance. This study proposes the modeling and fabrication of MEMS devices based on the standard Polysilicon Multi-Users MEMS Process (PolyMUMPs) for acetone gas detection. Titanium dioxide ( $TiO_{2}$ ) nanoparticles has been incorporated onto the top sensor’s surface, amplifying its detection sensitivity. The study delves into Electrothermal mechanisms that has integrated with the embedded microheater to induce thermal forces. This enhancement significantly improves the acetone gas detection capabilities of the device with high sensitivity and low detection limit. Results include the displacement amplitude of the uncoated PolyMUMPs sensor, with exploration of the coated device’s behavior under different heating voltages. Electrothermal actuation is employed, and the output voltage is measured using an MS3110 universal capacitive readout circuit. Comparisons of uncoated and coated devices has been investigated, demonstrating the influence of the sensing material that improve the detection performance. This investigation delves into the impact of varying coating thickness on the PolyMUMPs sensor’s performance. The mass sensitivity of the device is found to be 3.8574 mHz/pg, while the detection limit indicates that the device can detect up to 44 part per billion (ppb) at resonance frequency of 7.627 kHz.

Abstract Over the last couple of decades, the advancement in Microelectromechanical System (MEMS) devices is highly demanded for integrating the economically miniaturized sensors with fabricating technology. A sensor is a system that detects and responds to multiple physical inputs and converting them into analogue or digital forms. The sensor transforms these variations into a form which can be utilized as a marker to monitor the device variable. MEMS exhibits excellent feasibility in miniaturization sensors due to its small dimension, low power consumption, superior performance, and, batch-fabrication. This article presents the recent developments in standard actuation and sensing mechanisms that can serve MEMS-based devices, which is expected to revolutionize almost many product categories in the current era. The featured principles of actuating, sensing mechanisms and real-life applications have also been discussed. Proper understanding of the actuating and sensing mechanisms for the MEMS-based devices can play a vital role in effective selection for novel and complex application design.

Para-Toluene sulfonic acid doped polyaniline (PANI), PANI/chitosan composites, PANI/reduced graphene-oxide composites and a ternary composite comprising of PANI, chitosan and reduced graphene-oxide have synthesised via oxidative polymerisation of aniline by Ammonium peroxydisulfate (APS). FTIR, XRD, FESEM and UV-VIS techniques were performed for the confirmation of the successful synthesis. The fundamental optical parameters such as, complex refractive index, complex dielectric constants and optical conductivity of the PANI and the composites were investigated in the UV-VIS-NIR range. The results show a clear dependence on the constituent component such as sulphur as well as the absorbance values of the polymers. This study would therefore serve as initial solution to the scarcity of studies on the optical contants of p-toluene sulfonic acid doped polyaniline and its composites that could have many potential electrical, optical and optoelectronic applications. Chemicals and pesticides contamination in the food, drinking water, and environment ecosystem have become one of the most serious problems for human public health in the world due to their large amount used and wide application in the agriculture industry. Therefore, the detection and analysis of contamination in the food and drinking water by using techniques that are simple and suitable for fast screening are important. This review gives an overview of the last trends and recent advances biosensors for chemicals and pesticides detection based on electrochemical, optical and mechanical transducers strategies. Furthermore, the biosensors are classified according to their immobilized biorecognition elements including aptamer, antibodies, enzymes, and molecularly imprinted polymers. The implementation of nanomaterials such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, and metals nanoparticles are also emphasized and discussed in this review, these nanomaterials provides remarkable features to the biosensors such highly sensitive and accurate which allowing efficient pesticides detection. In addition to highlighting and summarizing various novel sensors, this review also provided some drawbacks, challenging, prospects as well as the current efforts to enhanced optical sensors.

Field effect-based biosensors (BioFETs) stand out among other biosensing technologies due to their unique features such as real time screening, ultrasensitive detection, low cost, and amenability to extreme device miniaturization due to the convenient utilization of nanoscale materials. Nanodevices pave the way for the detection of tiny biomolecules and minute concentrations of analytes as they are ultrasensitive to surface charge modulation, allowing for better point-of-care screening of various life-threatening infectious diseases. Semiconducting carbon nanotubes (sc-CNTs) are exceptionally promising for FET-channel integration to replace bulky silicon technology beyond the dimensions of the short channel effects for their 1D ultrathin structure, superior electronic features, and biocompatibility. However, performance of CNTFET biosensors is influenced by the inhomogeneous interface between sc-CNTs and metallic source and drain electrodes. This article reviews recent studies on CNTFET biosensors, morphology of these devices and the cause-and-effect of the interface issues between sc-CNTs and metallic electrodes. Finally, future outlook on suggested technology to improve the performance of such CNTFET devices is presented.

A ternary composite comprising of p-toluene sulfonic acid doped polyaniline (PANI), chitosan and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with stable aqueous dispersibility has been synthesised via oxidative polymerisation of aniline in chitosan/RGO dispersion. For comparison; PANI, PANI/chitosan and PANI/RGO composites were also synthesised using the same procedure. FTIR, Raman, XPS, XRD and UV-VIS confirmed the successful synthesis of the PANI and the composites. The aqueous dispersions of the PANI/chitosan and the ternary composites were found to be stable even after more than four months. The stability of the dispersion was attributed to the polycationic nature of the chitosan. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) shows an improved thermal stability for the ternary composite compared to PANI, PANI/chitosan and PANI/RGO composites up to about 160 °C. In addition, the electrical conductivity of the ternary composite is around 33 and 2.6 times greater than that of PANI/chitosan composite and PANI, respectively. Interestingly, the analysis of the band gap shows the lowest value of optical band gap of 2.25 eV for the ternary composite compared to PANI, PANI/chitosan and PANI/RGO with 2.50 eV, 2.60 eV and 2.44 eV, respectively. The reduced band gap for the ternary composite might be attributed to the formation of conductive networks throughout the chitosan matrix due to uniform dispersion of RGO in the chitosan matrices as well as the possible grafting of PANI onto chitosan backbone. These observed properties indicate the potential utilisation of the ternary composite in optical, electrical, optoelectronic and many other industrial applications. The optical constants of Para-Toluene sulfonic acid-doped polyaniline (PANI), PANIchitosan composites, PANI-reduced graphene-oxide composites and a ternary composite comprising of PANI, chitosan and reduced graphene-oxide dispersed in diluted p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) solution and N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP) solvent have been evaluated and compared. The optical constant values were extracted from the absorbance spectra of thin layers of the respective samples. The potential utilization of the materials as the active sensing materials of surface plasmon resonance biosensors has also been assessed in terms of the estimated value of the penetration depth through a dielectric medium. The results show a reasonable dependence of the optical constant parameters on the solvent type. Higher real part refractive index (n) and real part complex dielectric permittivity (ε’) values were observed for the samples prepared using PTSA solution, while higher optical conductivity values were observed for the NMP-based samples due to their relatively higher imaginary part refractive index (k) and imaginary part complex dielectric permittivity (ε″) values. In addition, NMP-based samples show improvement in terms of the penetration depth through a dielectric medium by around 9.5, 1.6, 4.4 and 2.9 times compared to PTSA-based samples for the PANI, PANI-chitosan, PANI-RGO and the ternary composites, respectively. Based on these, it is concluded that preparation of these materials using different dispersion solvents could produce materials of different optical properties. Thus, the variation of the dispersion solvent will allow the flexible utilization of the PANI and the composites for diverse applications.
