The recent detection of extended $\gamma$-ray emission around middle-aged pulsars is interpreted as inverse-Compton scattering of ambient photons by electron-positron pairs escaping the pulsar wind nebula, which are confined near the system by unclear mechanisms. This emerging population of $\gamma$-ray sources was first discovered at TeV energies and remains underexplored in the GeV range. To address this, we conducted a systematic search for extended sources along the Galactic plane using 14 years of Fermi-LAT data above 10 GeV, aiming to identify a number of pulsar halo candidates and extend our view to lower energies. The search covered the inner Galactic plane ($\lvert l\rvert\leq$ 100$^{\circ}$, $\lvert b\rvert\leq$ 1$^{\circ}$) and the positions of known TeV sources and bright pulsars, yielding broader astrophysical interest. We found 40 such sources, forming the Second Fermi Galactic Extended Sources Catalog (2FGES), most with 68% containment radii smaller than 1.0$^{\circ}$ and relatively hard spectra with photon indices below 2.5. We assessed detection robustness using field-specific alternative interstellar emission models and by inspecting significance maps. Noting 13 sources previously known as extended in the 4FGL-DR3 catalog and five dubious sources from complex regions, we report 22 newly detected extended sources above 10 GeV. Of these, 13 coincide with H.E.S.S., HAWC, or LHAASO sources; six coincide with bright pulsars (including four also coincident with TeV sources); six are associated with 4FGL point sources only; and one has no association in the scanned catalogs. In this paper, a new heterostructure based on the hybridization of graphene-LiF layers with a nonlinear material is introduced and studied. The numerical results are depicted and discussed in detail. A high value of FOM (FOM=24.5) at the frequency of 9.22 THz is reported for the chemical potential of 0.2 ev. Our results show that the propagation features of the proposed structure can be varied by the graphene parameters and the nonlinearity inside and outside the phononic band. The Hybridization of graphene with a nonlinear medium and a polar dielectric like LiF can support high levels of confinement with low optical loss, which makes this platform a unique candidate for THz applications., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

This paper presents a mixed-signal neuromorphic accelerator architecture designed for accelerating inference with event-based neural network models. This fully CMOS-compatible accelerator utilizes analog computing to emulate synapse and neuron operations. A C2C ladder structure implements synapses, while operational amplifiers (op-amps) are used to realize neuron functions. To enhance hardware resource utilization and power efficiency, we introduce the concept of a virtual neuron, where a single neuron engine emulates a set of model neurons, leveraging the sparsity inherent in event-based neuromorphic systems. Additionally, we propose a memory-based control technique to manage events in each layer, which improves performance while maintaining the flexibility to support various layer types. We also introduce an integer linear programming (ILP)-based mapping approach for efficiently allocating the model onto the proposed accelerator. The accelerator is a general-purpose neuromorphic platform capable of executing linear and convolutional neural models. The effectiveness of the proposed architecture is evaluated using two specially designed neuromorphic accelerators and two event-based datasets. The results show that the proposed architecture achieves 12.1 TOPS/W energy efficiency when accelerating a model trained on CIFAR10-DVS.

Scaling up quantum computing devices requires solving ever more complex quantum control tasks. Machine learning has been proposed as a promising approach to tackle the resulting challenges. However, experimental implementations are still scarce. In this work, we demonstrate experimentally a neural-network-based preparation of Schr\"odinger cat states in a cavity coupled dispersively to a qubit. We show that it is possible to teach a neural network to output optimized control pulses for a whole family of quantum states. After being trained in simulations, the network takes a description of the target quantum state as input and rapidly produces the pulse shape for the experiment, without any need for time-consuming additional optimization or retraining for different states. Our experimental results demonstrate more generally how deep neural networks and transfer learning can produce efficient simultaneous solutions to a range of quantum control tasks, which will benefit not only state preparation but also parametrized quantum gates., Comment: 20 pages, appendix included

Heart failure affects millions of people worldwide, significantly reducing quality of life and leading to high mortality rates. Despite extensive research, the relationship between heart failure and mortality rates among ICU patients is not fully understood, indicating the need for more accurate prediction models. This study analyzed data from 1,177 patients over 18 years old from the MIMIC-III database, identified using ICD-9 codes. Preprocessing steps included handling missing data, removing duplicates, treating skewness, and using oversampling techniques to address data imbalances. Through rigorous feature selection using Variance Inflation Factor (VIF), expert clinical input, and ablation studies, 46 key features were identified to enhance model performance. Our analysis compared several machine learning models, including Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest, LightGBM, and XGBoost. XGBoost emerged as the superior model, achieving a test AUC-ROC of 0.9228 (95\% CI 0.8748 - 0.9613), significantly outperforming our previous work (AUC-ROC of 0.8766) and the best results reported in existing literature (AUC-ROC of 0.824). The improved model's success is attributed to advanced feature selection methods, robust preprocessing techniques, and comprehensive hyperparameter optimization through Grid-Search. SHAP analysis and feature importance evaluations based on XGBoost highlighted key variables like leucocyte count and RDW, providing valuable insights into the clinical factors influencing mortality risk. This framework offers significant support for clinicians, enabling them to identify high-risk ICU heart failure patients and improve patient outcomes through timely and informed interventions.

Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients poses a significant mortality risk and imposes a considerable financial burden on patients and healthcare systems. Timely detection and prognostication of VAP in TBI patients are crucial to improve patient outcomes and alleviate the strain on healthcare resources. Methods: We implemented six machine learning models using the MIMIC-III database. Our methodology included preprocessing steps, such as feature selection with CatBoost and expert opinion, addressing class imbalance with the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE), and rigorous model tuning through 5-fold cross-validation to optimize hyperparameters. Key models evaluated included SVM, Logistic Regression, Random Forest, XGBoost, ANN, and AdaBoost. Additionally, we conducted SHAP analysis to determine feature importance and performed an ablation study to assess feature impacts on model performance. Results: XGBoost outperformed the baseline models and the best existing literature. We used metrics, including AUC, Accuracy, Specificity, Sensitivity, F1 Score, PPV, and NPV. XGBoost demonstrated the highest performance with an AUC of 0.940 and an Accuracy of 0.875, which are 23.4% and 23.5% higher than the best results in the existing literature, with an AUC of 0.706 and an Accuracy of 0.640, respectively. This enhanced performance underscores the models' effectiveness in clinical settings. Conclusions: This study enhances the predictive modeling of VAP in TBI patients, improving early detection and intervention potential. Refined feature selection and advanced ensemble techniques significantly boosted model accuracy and reliability, offering promising directions for future clinical applications and medical diagnostics research.

Single-mode semiconductor lasers subject to optical injection have been shown to trigger a wide range of dynamical behavior from injection locking to chaos. Multi-wavelength lasers add even more degrees of freedom and complexity to the dynamical repertoire potentially unlocking new functionalities for applications ranging from THz generation and processing to all-optical memories. In particular, leveraging the inherent mode coupling in multi-wavelength lasers, spectral multiplication over a THz range of an injected optical signal has been shown. While most of the research on optical injection has been focused on single-mode semiconductor lasers, the dynamical behavior of multi-wavelength lasers, particularly when subjected to injection of amplitude-modulated signals remains vastly unexplored. In this work, we numerically and experimentally investigate the response of an on-chip dual-wavelength laser subject to the optical injection of a single-sideband signal around one of the modes of the laser. Our findings show an asymmetric power evolution of the sidebands appearing around both the injected and un-injected modes with respect to the modulation frequency. The power and bandwidth of the sideband signals strongly depend on the resonance frequency produced by the interference between the cavity mode and the injection, which can be tailored by twerking the strength and the detuning of the injection. Vision-language models (VLMs) are intensively used in many downstream tasks, including those requiring assessments of individuals appearing in the images. While VLMs perform well in simple single-person scenarios, in real-world applications, we often face complex situations in which there are persons of different genders doing different activities. We show that in such cases, VLMs are biased towards identifying the individual with the expected gender (according to ingrained gender stereotypes in the model or other forms of sample selection bias) as the performer of the activity. We refer to this bias in associating an activity with the gender of its actual performer in an image or text as the Gender-Activity Binding (GAB) bias and analyze how this bias is internalized in VLMs. To assess this bias, we have introduced the GAB dataset with approximately 5500 AI-generated images that represent a variety of activities, addressing the scarcity of real-world images for some scenarios. To have extensive quality control, the generated images are evaluated for their diversity, quality, and realism. We have tested 12 renowned pre-trained VLMs on this dataset in the context of text-to-image and image-to-text retrieval to measure the effect of this bias on their predictions. Additionally, we have carried out supplementary experiments to quantify the bias in VLMs' text encoders and to evaluate VLMs' capability to recognize activities. Our experiments indicate that VLMs experience an average performance decline of about 13.2% when confronted with gender-activity binding bias.

Background: Stroke is second-leading cause of disability and death among adults. Approximately 17 million people suffer from a stroke annually, with about 85% being ischemic strokes. Predicting mortality of ischemic stroke patients in intensive care unit (ICU) is crucial for optimizing treatment strategies, allocating resources, and improving survival rates. Methods: We acquired data on ICU ischemic stroke patients from MIMIC-IV database, including diagnoses, vital signs, laboratory tests, medications, procedures, treatments, and clinical notes. Stroke patients were randomly divided into training (70%, n=2441), test (15%, n=523), and validation (15%, n=523) sets. To address data imbalances, we applied Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE). We selected 30 features for model development, significantly reducing feature number from 1095 used in the best study. We developed a deep learning model to assess mortality risk and implemented several baseline machine learning models for comparison. Results: XGB-DL model, combining XGBoost for feature selection and deep learning, effectively minimized false positives. Model's AUROC improved from 0.865 (95% CI: 0.821 - 0.905) on first day to 0.903 (95% CI: 0.868 - 0.936) by fourth day using data from 3,646 ICU mortality patients in the MIMIC-IV database with 0.945 AUROC (95% CI: 0.944 - 0.947) during training. Although other ML models also performed well in terms of AUROC, we chose Deep Learning for its higher specificity. Conclusions: Through enhanced feature selection and data cleaning, proposed model demonstrates a 13% AUROC improvement compared to existing models while reducing feature number from 1095 in previous studies to 30.

Predicting critical health outcomes such as patient mortality and hospital readmission is essential for improving survivability. However, healthcare datasets have many concurrences that create complexities, leading to poor predictions. Consequently, pre-processing the data is crucial to improve its quality. In this study, we use an existing pre-processing algorithm, concatenation, to improve data quality by decreasing the complexity of datasets. Sixteen healthcare datasets were extracted from two databases - MIMIC III and University of Illinois Hospital - converted to the event logs, they were then fed into the concatenation algorithm. The pre-processed event logs were then fed to the Split Miner (SM) algorithm to produce a process model. Process model quality was evaluated before and after concatenation using the following metrics: fitness, precision, F-Measure, and complexity. The pre-processed event logs were also used as inputs to the Decay Replay Mining (DREAM) algorithm to predict critical outcomes. We compared predicted results before and after applying the concatenation algorithm using Area Under the Curve (AUC) and Confidence Intervals (CI). Results indicated that the concatenation algorithm improved the quality of the process models and predictions of the critical health outcomes.

In this paper, we study the impact of the existence of multiple IRSs in a homogeneous wireless network, in which all BSs, users (U), and IRSs are spatially distributed by an independent homogeneous PPP, with density $\lambda_{{\rm BS}}\rm{[BS/m^2]}$, $\lambda_{{\rm U}}\rm{[U/m^2]}$, and $\lambda_{{\rm IRS}}\rm{[IRS/m^2]}$, respectively. We utilize a uniformly random serving strategy for BS and IRS to create stochastic symmetry in the network. We analyze the performance of the network and study the effect of the existence of the IRS on the network performance. To this end, for a typical user in the system, we derive analytical upper and lower bounds on the expectation of the power (second statistical moment) of the desired signal and the interference caused by BSs and other users. After that, we obtain analytical upper bounds on the decay of the probability of the power of the desired signal and the interference for the typical user (which results in a lower bound for the cumulative distribution function (CDF)). Moreover, we derive upper bounds on the decay of the probability of the capacity of one typical user, which results in a lower bound for the outage probability. In the numerical results, we observe that the numerical calculation of the power of the desired signal and the interference is near the derived lower bounds and we show that the increment of the parameter ${(\lambda_{\rm IRS})}$ causes increment in powers of both the desired and interference signals. We also observe that the increment of the parameter ${\lambda_{\rm IRS}}$ causes the decrement of outage probability.

In order to overcome the challenges caused by flash memories and also to protect against errors related to reading information stored in DNA molecules in the shotgun sequencing method, the rank modulation is proposed. In the rank modulation framework, codewords are permutations. In this paper, we study the largest size $P(n, d)$ of permutation codes of length $n$, i.e., subsets of the set $S_n$ of all permutations on $\{1,\ldots, n\}$ with the minimum distance at least $d\in\{1,\ldots ,\binom{n}{2}\}$ under the Kendall $\tau$-metric. By presenting an algorithm and some theorems, we managed to improve the known lower and upper bounds for $P(n,d)$. In particular, we show that $P(n,d)=4$ for all $n\geq 6$ and $\frac{3}{5}\binom{n}{2}< d \leq \frac{2}{3} \binom{n}{2}$. Additionally, we prove that for any prime number $n$ and integer $r\leq \frac{n}{6}$, $ P(n,3)\leq (n-1)!-\dfrac{n-6r}{\sqrt{n^2-8rn+20r^2}}\sqrt{\dfrac{(n-1)!}{n(n-r)!}}. $ This result greatly improves the upper bound of $P(n,3)$ for all primes $n\geq 37$., Comment: 15 pages

In this paper, we present a multimodal dataset obtained from a honey bee colony in Montr\'eal, Quebec, Canada, spanning the years of 2021 to 2022. This apiary comprised 10 beehives, with microphones recording more than 2000 hours of high quality raw audio, and also sensors capturing temperature, and humidity. Periodic hive inspections involved monitoring colony honey bee population changes, assessing queen-related conditions, and documenting overall hive health. Additionally, health metrics, such as Varroa mite infestation rates and winter mortality assessments were recorded, offering valuable insights into factors affecting hive health status and resilience. In this study, we first outline the data collection process, sensor data description, and dataset structure. Furthermore, we demonstrate a practical application of this dataset by extracting various features from the raw audio to predict colony population using the number of frames of bees as a proxy.

NGC 5128 (Cen A) is the nearest giant elliptical galaxy and one of the brightest extragalactic radio sources in the sky, boasting a prominent dust lane and jets emanating from its nuclear supermassive black hole. In this paper, we construct the star formation history (SFH) of two small fields in the halo of NGC 5128: a northeastern field (Field 1) at a projected distance of $\sim 18.8$ kpc from the center, and a southern field (Field 2) $\sim 9.9$ kpc from the center. Our method is based on identifying long period variable (LPV) stars that trace their sibling stellar population and hence historical star formation due to their high luminosity and strong variability; we identified 395 LPVs in Field 1 and 671 LPVs in Field 2. Even though the two fields are $\sim 28$ kpc apart on opposite sides from the center, they show similar SFHs. In Field 1, star formation rates (SFRs) increased significantly around $t\sim 800$ Myr and $t\sim 3.8$ Gyr; and in Field 2, SFRs increased considerably around $t\sim 800$ Myr, $t\sim 3.8$ Gyr, and $t\sim 6.3$ Gyr, where $t$ is look--back time. The increase in SFR $\sim 800$ Myr ago agrees with previous suggestions that the galaxy experienced a merger around that time. The SFH reconstructed from LPVs supports a scenario in which multiple episodes of nuclear activity lead to episodic jet-induced star formation. While there is no catalog of LPVs for the central part of NGC 5128, applying our method to the outer regions (for the first time in a galaxy outside the Local Group) has enabled us to put constraints on the complex evolution of this cornerstone galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Personalized learning is a proposed approach to address the problem of data heterogeneity in collaborative machine learning. In a decentralized setting, the two main challenges of personalization are client clustering and data privacy. In this paper, we address these challenges by developing P4 (Personalized Private Peer-to-Peer) a method that ensures that each client receives a personalized model while maintaining differential privacy guarantee of each client's local dataset during and after the training. Our approach includes the design of a lightweight algorithm to identify similar clients and group them in a private, peer-to-peer (P2P) manner. Once grouped, we develop differentially-private knowledge distillation for clients to co-train with minimal impact on accuracy. We evaluate our proposed method on three benchmark datasets (FEMNIST or Federated EMNIST, CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100) and two different neural network architectures (Linear and CNN-based networks) across a range of privacy parameters. The results demonstrate the potential of P4, as it outperforms the state-of-the-art of differential private P2P by up to 40 percent in terms of accuracy. We also show the practicality of P4 by implementing it on resource constrained devices, and validating that it has minimal overhead, e.g., about 7 seconds to run collaborative training between two clients.

Machine-learning (ML) models are increasingly being deployed on edge devices to provide a variety of services. However, their deployment is accompanied by challenges in model privacy and auditability. Model providers want to ensure that (i) their proprietary models are not exposed to third parties; and (ii) be able to get attestations that their genuine models are operating on edge devices in accordance with the service agreement with the user. Existing measures to address these challenges have been hindered by issues such as high overheads and limited capability (processing/secure memory) on edge devices. In this work, we propose GuaranTEE, a framework to provide attestable private machine learning on the edge. GuaranTEE uses Confidential Computing Architecture (CCA), Arm's latest architectural extension that allows for the creation and deployment of dynamic Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) within which models can be executed. We evaluate CCA's feasibility to deploy ML models by developing, evaluating, and openly releasing a prototype. Diabetes mellitus (DM) predisposes patients to vascular complications. Retinal images and vasculature reflect the body's micro- and macrovascular health. They can be used to diagnose DM complications, including diabetic retinopathy (DR), neuropathy, nephropathy, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, as well as forecast the risk of cardiovascular events. Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled systems developed for high-throughput detection of DR using digitized retinal images have become clinically adopted. Beyond DR screening, AI integration also holds immense potential to address challenges associated with the holistic care of the patient with DM. In this work, we aim to comprehensively review the literature for studies on AI applications based on retinal images related to DM diagnosis, prognostication, and management. We will describe the findings of holistic AI-assisted diabetes care, including but not limited to DR screening, and discuss barriers to implementing such systems, including issues concerning ethics, data privacy, equitable access, and explainability. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a severe condition affecting premature infants, leading to abnormal retinal blood vessel growth, retinal detachment, and potential blindness. While semi-automated systems have been used in the past to diagnose ROP-related plus disease by quantifying retinal vessel features, traditional machine learning (ML) models face challenges like accuracy and overfitting. Recent advancements in deep learning (DL), especially convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have significantly improved ROP detection and classification. The i-ROP deep learning (i-ROP-DL) system also shows promise in detecting plus disease, offering reliable ROP diagnosis potential. This research comprehensively examines the contemporary progress and challenges associated with using retinal imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) to detect ROP, offering valuable insights that can guide further investigation in this domain. Based on 89 original studies in this field (out of 1487 studies that were comprehensively reviewed), we concluded that traditional methods for ROP diagnosis suffer from subjectivity and manual analysis, leading to inconsistent clinical decisions. AI holds great promise for improving ROP management. With the ubiquitous use of location-based services, large-scale individual-level location data has been widely collected through location-awareness devices. The widespread exposure of such location data poses significant privacy risks to users, as it can lead to re-identification, the inference of sensitive information, and even physical threats. In this survey, we analyse different geomasking techniques proposed to protect individuals' privacy in geodata. We propose a taxonomy to characterise these techniques across various dimensions. We then highlight the shortcomings of current techniques and discuss avenues for future research. Our proposed taxonomy serves as a practical resource for data custodians, offering them a means to navigate the extensive array of existing privacy mechanisms and to identify those that align most effectively with their specific requirements.

In this paper, we introduce the concept of $k$-integral graphs. A graph $\Gamma$ is called $k$-integral if the extension degree of the splitting field of the characteristic polynomial of $\Gamma$ over rational field $\mathbb Q$ is equal to $k$. We prove that for any positive integers $k$ and $\Delta$, the set of all finite connected graphs with algebraic degree at most $k$ and maximum degree at most $\Delta$ is finite. We study $2$-integral Cayley graphs over finite groups $G$ with respect to Cayley sets which are a union of conjugacy classes of $G$. Among other general results, we completely characterize all finite abelian groups having a connected $2$-integral Cayley graph with valency $2,3,4$ and $5$. Furthermore, we classify the finite groups $G$ that all Cayley graphs over $G$ with bounded valency are $2$-integral.

This paper proposes a novel approach by integrating sensor fusion with deep reinforcement learning, specifically the Soft Actor-Critic (SAC) algorithm, to develop an optimal control policy for self-driving cars. Our system employs a two-branch fusion method for vehicle image and tracking sensor data, leveraging the strengths of residual structures and identity mapping to enhance agent training. Through comprehensive comparisons, we demonstrate the efficacy of information fusion and establish the superiority of our selected algorithm over alternative approaches. We present a longitudinal multi-sensor dataset collected from honey bee colonies (Apis mellifera) with rich phenotypic measurements. Data were continuously collected between May-2020 and April-2021 from 53 hives located at two apiaries in Qu\'ebec, Canada. The sensor data included audio features, temperature, and relative humidity. The phenotypic measurements contained beehive population, number of brood cells (eggs, larva and pupa), Varroa destructor infestation levels, defensive and hygienic behaviors, honey yield, and winter mortality. Our study is amongst the first to provide a wide variety of phenotypic trait measurements annotated by apicultural science experts, which facilitate a broader scope of analysis. We first summarize the data collection procedure, sensor data pre-processing steps, and data composition. We then provide an overview of the phenotypic data distribution as well as a visualization of the sensor data patterns. Pathological alterations in the human vascular system underlie many chronic diseases, such as atherosclerosis and aneurysms. However, manually analyzing diagnostic images of the vascular system, such as computed tomographic angiograms (CTAs) is a time-consuming and tedious process. To address this issue, we propose a deep learning model to segment the vascular system in CTA images of patients undergoing surgery for peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Our study focused on accurately segmenting the vascular system (1) from the descending thoracic aorta to the iliac bifurcation and (2) from the descending thoracic aorta to the knees in CTA images using deep learning techniques. Our approach achieved average Dice accuracies of 93.5% and 80.64% in test dataset for (1) and (2), respectively, highlighting its high accuracy and potential clinical utility. These findings demonstrate the use of deep learning techniques as a valuable tool for medical professionals to analyze the health of the vascular system efficiently and accurately. Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) methods - in particular, deep learning (DL) - has been on the rise lately for the analysis of different CVD-related topics. The use of fundus images and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in the diagnosis of retinal diseases has also been extensively studied. To better understand heart function and anticipate changes based on microvascular characteristics and function, researchers are currently exploring the integration of AI with non-invasive retinal scanning. There is great potential to reduce the number of cardiovascular events and the financial strain on healthcare systems by utilizing AI-assisted early detection and prediction of cardiovascular diseases on a large scale. Method: A comprehensive search was conducted across various databases, including PubMed, Medline, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Sciences, IEEE Xplore, and ACM Digital Library, using specific keywords related to cardiovascular diseases and artificial intelligence. Results: The study included 87 English-language publications selected for relevance, and additional references were considered. This paper provides an overview of the recent developments and difficulties in using artificial intelligence and retinal imaging to diagnose cardiovascular diseases. It provides insights for further exploration in this field. Conclusion: Researchers are trying to develop precise disease prognosis patterns in response to the aging population and the growing global burden of CVD. AI and deep learning are revolutionizing healthcare by potentially diagnosing multiple CVDs from a single retinal image.
