Background: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has affected everyone and stress-related mental health issues affect young people more than other groups, including marginalised populations. As a result of this pandemic, society is being urged to examine indigenous psychological resilience, especially among Orang Asli (OA) communities in Malaysia. Hence, this study aims to identify factors associated with psychological resilience among OA youths of Kampung Orang Asli (KOA) in Gombak during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: A cross-sectional study comprising OA communities was conducted between January 2022 and September 2022 in the Gombak District, Selangor. A self-administered online questionnaire using Google Forms and a self-administered printed questionnaire was used to collect data from youths aged 18 years old--24 years old. The Malay version of Conner-Davidson Resilience Scale-25 (CD-RISC-25) was used to assess psychological resilience. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 28.0, and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the associated factors and their significance level. Result: A total of 158 participants were involved in this study. The mean score for psychological resilience was estimated at 69.28 (SD = 14.52). The social relationships domain recorded the highest mean score for quality of life (71.54, SD = 13.72). Meanwhile, the total mean score for self-esteem fell into the high-level category (35.77, SD = 4.94), and the domain of relationship and family dynamics under family environment scored the highest mean score of 18.83 (SD = 2.89). Psychological resilience was associated with youths of KOA Batu 12 (β = -14.274, P < 0.05), KOA Ulu Batu (β = -17.789, P < 0.05), less than four siblings (β = -6.495, P < 0.05), owner of residential property (β = -7.543, P < 0.05), high self-esteem (β = 0.612, P < 0.05) and good relationship and family dynamic (β = 1.391, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Developing interventions aimed at psychological resilience determinants may assist OA youths in coping with future threats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the challenges faced by general practitioners in Malaysia when helping patients quit smoking, particularly those who are dual users of combustible cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Topics include the impact of recent policy changes in Malaysia regarding e-cigarettes, the role of general practitioners in smoking cessation, and the need for enhanced training and support for healthcare professionals to address the complexities of dual use effectively.

Objective: The primary purpose of this review was to investigate the role of self-efficacy as a mediating factor towards effective diabetes self-care management in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Method: This is systematic review from scientific databases such as Web of Science, SCOPUS, and PubMed between the years 2010 until 2021. Three investigators cross-checked all articles assigned. Results: A total of 18 articles were included. These studies showed perhaps a critical factor is self-efficacy that acts as mediators between various other components and diabetes self-management. Self-efficacy was also associated with improved glycemic control, dietary adherence and perceived autonomy support. Conclusion: In general, self-efficacy has an extensive role in diabetes self-management. From this review we have come to an understanding of how general and diabetes-specific self-efficacy can contribute to successful diabetes self-care management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The number of Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer patients in Malaysia is rising. Caregivers need to perform their responsibilities as they spend most of their time providing care for the patient in their homes. To what extend does Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) of GI caregivers relates to coping strategies of caregivers are unknown and yet to be investigated. This study investigates the caregivers' response pattern towards HRQOL and coping strategies survey items across several domains and the association between HRQOL and coping strategies of the caregivers. This study used Rasch measurement model in the analysis of survey data gathered from 323 GI cancer caregivers from three public hospitals. Data were collected using HRQOL and Coping strategies instruments administered to the GI caregivers. It was found that four items (QOL_9, QOL_20, QOL_25 and QOL_31) under the Burden domain are among the most difficult to endorse by GI caregivers in the HRQOL items. Meanwhile, two items (COPE4 and COPE11) under the Substance Use domain in the coping strategies constructs are most difficult to endorse by GI cancer caregivers. This study also discovered that majority of caregivers who have issues with mental strain, disruptiveness, daily focus and sleep disruption applied positivity adaptation and use of emotional support as their coping strategies. Background: It is essential for caregivers of schizophrenia patients to have effective coping mechanisms to deal with their own mental health. However, research on the factors that contribute to the copingmechanisms of caregivers is limited. The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of coping strategies and their correlations to socio-demographic features, psychological distress, and social support among the caregivers of patients with schizophrenia. Method: Through the convenience sampling method, 331 caregivers of patients with schizophrenia participated in this cross-sectional study. The respondents comprised caregivers who had attended an outpatient psychiatric clinic, providing the socio-demographic data. The study involves three instruments: the Kessler's Psychological Distress (K10); the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS); and the Brief-COPE. Findings: Using multivariable analysis, psychological distress was identified as a substantial independent predictor of emotion-focused, problem-focused, and avoidance coping strategies. Good social support was linked to the usage of problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies. Conclusion: It has been demonstrated that good social support and psychological distress are associated with coping strategies. More prospective and qualitative research is required to determine how coping strategies will be able to assist Malaysian caregivers to develop a more holistic approach to treating patients with schizophrenia. Introduction: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a serious health problem. It is a major contributor to end-stage liver disease. Worldwide, 1–8% of all pregnant women were infected. Women with viral hepatitis may be at an increased risk of pregnancy complications. There are several obstetrics intervention acts as risk factors, which are specific to women pertaining the HCV infection; anti-D immunoglobulin (Ig) therapy may be one of them. Our objectives were to estimate the prevalence of HCV antibodies (anti-HCV), RNA, and genotype distribution among women with anti-D Ig therapy. Materials and methods: A cross sectional study was conducted. A sample of 154 Rhesus negative (Rh − ve) pregnant women regardless of the anti-D Ig therapy was collected. Anti-HCV were tested using third generation enzyme immunoassay (EIA-3) and immunoblot assay (Lia Tek-111), subsequently. In addition, 89 serum samples were subjected to molecular analysis using RT-PCR and DNA enzyme immunoassay (DEIA) method for the detection of HCV-RNA and genotypes. Results: Anti-HCV, and HCV-RNA seroprevalence were significantly higher (17.1, 35.5%) among women with anti-D Ig than their counter group (6.4, 13.16%), p =.038,.018, respectively. Significant direct positive dose response correlation (r = 0.78, p =.005) had been seen between number of anti-D Ig therapy and anti-HCV seropositive rate. Anti-D Ig therapy act as a risk factor (odds ratio (OR) = 3.01, 95%CI: 1.01–8.9) especially from the third dose onward. Women with anti-D Ig therapy were at higher risk (3.6 times more) of positive HCV-RNA (OR =3.6, 95%CI =1.19–10.837). Genotype HCV-1b showed higher prevalent (52.9%) among the recipients of anti-D Ig therapy while genotype HCV-3a (6.6%) was the lowest. Conclusions: Our study showed that Anti-D immunoglobulin therapy acts as a risk factor for acquiring HCV infection. Screening for HCV should be recommended for all recipients of anti-D Ig. Not only HCV antibodies but HCV-RNA detection being recommended for the diagnosis of HCV infection. A brief rational: Pregnant women with HCV infection are at risk of adverse obstetric outcome. Anti-D Ig therapy may be a risk factor for HCV infection. Hence, we conducted a cross sectional study with the objectives to estimate the prevalence of HCV antibodies (anti-HCV), RNA, and genotype distribution among women with anti-D Ig therapy. We found that anti-HCV and HCV-RNA seroprevalence were significantly higher in women with anti-D Ig. In addition, women with anti-D Ig therapy were 3.6 times more at risk of positive HCV-RNA with genotype HCV-1b showed higher prevalence. Therefore, anti-D Ig therapy is a risk factor for acquiring HCV infection and we recommend screening for HCV for all recipients of anti-D Ig. Introduction: As cervical cancer is the third most common cancer among women and ten percent of cervical cancer incidence among those 65 years and above, Pap smear is still relevant to be performed among older women. The aim of this study was to determine the determinants of Pap smear screening among older women in an urban setting. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 515 women aged 50 and above in two urban health centres in Gombak, Selangor. The sampling technique conducted was random systematic sampling. The independent variables were age, marital status, employment status, gynaecological history (family history of cervical cancer, menopause, hysterectomy), obstetric history (number of live births, ever had contraception), presence of chronic diseases (hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, heart disease). Results: Only 202 (39.2%) out of 515 undergone Pap smear screening. An estimated 80.7% of them had their last Pap smear a year ago. The mean age of the respondents was 58.83± 7.05 years old and 77.3% had one and more comorbidities. The respondents preferred health care personnel as the source for the pap smear information compared to reading materials and internet. Married vs divorced (aOR=1.89,p=0.02); those with heart disease (aOR=0.32,p value=0.01; those with Diabetes Mellitus (aOR=0.57,p value=0.01; those who had hysterectomy (OR=2.89, p value=0.04) and those who had contraception (aOR=3.72, p value = <0.001) were significant determinants for undergoing Pap smear screening. Conclusion: The prevalence of Pap smear screening among older urban women is still low. Determinants identified can be used in enhancing the prevalence of performing Pap smear by organizing programmes via targeted groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Occupational diseases are one of the most important health problems related to employment However, in Malaysia, there are few epidemiological studies discussing these issues, especially among workers in the industry. For that, this study aimed to screen workers from high-risk industrial sectors, identify hazards in the workplace and recommend improvement measures in the workplace to prevent occupational diseases., Methods and Analysis: This is a 3-year project in which a survey of 100 000 workers from all 13 states in Malaysia will be conducted using a web-based screening tool that is comprised of two parts: occupational disease screening tool and hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control method. Data will be collected using a multistage stratified sampling method from 500 companies, including seven critical industrial sectors. The independent variables will be sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidities, previous medical history, high-risk behaviour and workplace profile. The dependent variable will be the types of occupational diseases (noise-induced hearing loss, respiratory, musculoskeletal, neurotoxic, skin and mental disorders). Subsequently, suggestions of referral for medium and high-risk workers to occupational health clinics will be attained. The approved occupational health service clinics/providers will make a confirmatory diagnosis of each case as deemed necessary. Subsequently, a walk-through survey to identify workplace hazards and recommend workplace improvement measures to prevent these occupational diseases will be achieved. Both descriptive and inferential statistics will be used in this study. Simple and adjusted binary regression will be used to find the determinants of occupational diseases., Ethics and Dissemination: This study has been approved by the MARA University of Technology Research Ethics Board.
