Abstract

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is a research university that continuously undergoes an audit and accreditation process for the management of its courses. The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FKAB) is subjected to such processes, one of them is the auditing conducted by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC), which gives recognition to engineering programmes in Malaysia. The criteria that have been set by the EAC requires the faculty to measure and evaluate graduates based directly on the course outcomes (CO) and programme outcomes (POs) to ensure that they are able to achieve the programme and course objectives. This paper discusses a method developed for the measurement and evaluation of POs which is a direct measurement for assessing the courses offered in the mechanical engineering programme. Assessment templates are developed using a Microsoft Excel based on the data presented on the grade coordination meetings conducted at the end of each semester. The data used for this study were semester 2 2010/2011 session, and semester 1 session 2011/2012. Based on the results obtained, the majority of the courses achieves more than 80% for course level monitoring for their individual PO achievement except for five subjects. For programme level monitoring, from the average POs marks, all POs were scored more than 80%, which indicates that the Mechanical Programs offered by the department are satisfied with the department standard.

Abstract

One of the major concerns of the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) is the need for an effective monitoring and evaluation of program outcome domains that can be associated with courses taught under the Mechanical Engineering program. However, an effective monitoring method that can determine the results of each program outcome using Bloom's Taxonomy has not yet been established for each course. The purpose of this research is to conduct a Big Picture Assessment to achieve Outcome-Based Learning. Big Picture Assessment is a comprehensive monitoring tool of courses with studied program outcome domains. The tool applies the three main domains of Bloom's Taxonomy, namely, psychomotor, cognitive, and affective, in its monitoring process. Furthermore, the identification of program outcomes for each course is evaluated to meet standards set by the EAC. The results of this study will facilitate continuous improvement on existing courses.

Abstract

The industry has been significantly enhanced by recent developments in UAV collision avoidance systems. They made collision avoidance controllers for self-driving drones both affordable and hazardous. These low-maintenance, portable devices provide continuous monitoring in near-real time. It is inaccurate due to the fact that collision avoidance controllers necessitate trade-offs regarding data reliability. Collision avoidance control research is expanding significantly and is disseminated through publications, initiatives, and grey literature. This paper provides a concise overview of the most recent research on the development of autonomous vehicle collision avoidance systems from 2017 to 2024. In this paper, the state-of-the-art collision avoidance system used in drone systems, the capabilities of the sensors used, and the distinctions between each type of drone are discussed. The pros and cons of current approaches are analyzed using seven metrics: complexity, communication dependency, pre-mission planning, resilience, 3D compatibility, real-time performance, and escape trajectories. 47. Wavelet bump extraction (WBE) for editing variable amplitude fatigue loadings

Abstract

In durability testing of automobiles, load histories collected for laboratory testing are often lengthy in time. Therefore, a fatigue data editing technique is needed to summarise the load history. A fatigue mission synthesis algorithm, called Wavelet Bump Extraction (WBE) preserves the original load cycle sequences has been developed. The basis of WBE is to identify the important features or bumps that cause the majority of the fatigue damage. Bumps are identified in the frequency bands of the load spectrum using an orthogonal wavelet transform. Bumps are then extracted and combined to produce a mission signal with an equivalent fatigue damage as the onginal signal. The WBE validation was performed by analysing the cycle sequence effects in variable amplitude (VA) loadings. The experimental fatigue lives of the shortened VA loadings (Choi 2004) were compared to those predicted using strain-life fatigue damage models, i.e. Coffin-Manson, Morrow, Smith-Watson-Topper and Effective Strain Damage (ESD). The smallest difference was found between the experiment and ESD model, suggesting it is a suitable model for the use with WBE. Comparison between WBE and the time domain fatigue data editing was also conducted in order to observe its effectiveness for accelerated fatigue tests. Moreover, it is useful to evaluate the fatigue life of the original and mission signals by means of fatigue damage preservation in the mission signal. Finally, an analysis of the bump segments sequence effects was performed in order to determine an appropriate mission signal for accelerated fatigue tests. The WBE algorithm showed a substantial compression of the VA loadings could be achieved whilst maintaining fatigue damage and the important load sequences. The ability of the WBE algorithm to shorten fatigue loadings would be expected to prove useful in accelerated fatigue testing of automobiles. Finally, the combination of WBE and ESD provides a novel application of the wavelet-based fatigue data editing.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the delamination effect of a metal sandwich panel using a four-point bending simulation under continual spectrum loading. The most recent core designs of the sandwich panel have a cavity that can increase vulnerability in terms of bonding strength under constant cyclic loading. The sandwich panel is simulated under constant cyclic loading using different core design configurations, which are rounded dimple, hemispherical dimple, and smooth surface core design. There are two types of conditions used; no pre-stress and pre-stress loads with variable stress ratios based on Gerber stress life theory. Results showed that dimple core design enhanced mechanical behaviour and fatigue life performance about 33% and 5%, respectively, compared to the sandwich panel with a smooth surface core design. It is highlighted that modification on the surface of core design could be beneficial to enhance the bonding strength performance of sandwich panels and prevent early delamination under extreme conditions such as constant cyclic loading. This study is beneficial to enhance the bonding strength for sandwich panels against extreme conditions such as high impact load and continuous cyclic load.
