Lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) is a widely grown perennial legume worldwide which can provide high biomass and protein yields, biological N fixation, deep soil water extraction and a range of ecosystems services relevant to current and future agricultural systems. The potential to expand lucerne beyond its current cultivated areas in New Zealand, and its potential productivity across the country's contrasting climate zones, are currently unknown. To gain such insights, we estimated land suitability and spatial distribution of lucerne above-ground biomass across New Zealand lands considering contrasting growth conditions (rain-fed or irrigated for different soils types) and two simulation methods of different complexity (process- and GIS-based approaches). This aimed to assess yield-estimate spatial patterns and sensitivity to model selection for a wide range of combinations of water supply (i.e. irrigation and soil water storage) across New Zealand climate zones. For example, highly suitable areas for lucerne cultivation, were estimated in ∼21 thousand km2 when considering the exclusion of steep slopes, poor soil drainage and excess annual rainfall. The two crop-yield models were applied in response to 30 years of daily historical (1971–2000) weather data downscaled at 5 km resolution on suitable areas. Simulated average lucerne yields ranged from ∼4.5–28 t dry matter/ha per year. Simulations showed a distinct spatial pattern of yield decline from north to south, mainly in response to decreasing temperatures. Temporally, water limited yields were up to 4-fold more variable than under irrigation, depending on the degree of drought stress across different years. Results also unveiled systematic spatial patterns of model uncertainty quantified as yield sensitivity to model selection. For instance, simulated yields were most sensitive to model selection (6–31% of total variability, Ti) within high abiotic-stress environments (e.g. low temperature and limited water supply). Overall, soil type selection accounted for most of yield variability (58–78% Ti), being particularly important in warmer environments with variable seasonal rainfall regimes (e.g. northern regions). As expected, water supply (i.e. rain-fed or irrigated systems) was relatively more impactful on yield (8–20% Ti) for limited rainfall areas, where crops are most drought prone (e.g. east coast and central southern regions). Long-term regional scale comparisons of annual lucerne yield, between 30-year simulated distributions and point-based observations from the AgYields database, helped identify hotspots of yield overestimation. Such insights are useful to guide future research on high yield gap areas (e.g. southern colder and drier locations) and highlight key areas for model improvement (e.g. representation of multiple biotic stresses). Overall, our results provide a first gridded-model assessment of lucerne suitability and yield at national scale and quantify the share of variability explained by key climatic, management and methodological components in spatial analysis studies. These insights can inform future modelling efforts and support agricultural planning that considers the expansion of lucerne and other perennial legumes.

Introduction: Estimation of fetal weight is important for antenatal and intrapartum clinical decisionmaking. Accurate estimates are essential, since abnormal fetal growth may be associated with perinatal and maternal risk. This study aimed to compare the accuracy of the three most commonly used techniques, abdominal palpation and ultrasound, carried out near to and at term by comparing to the weight at birth. Methods: Present study included 100 singleton pregnancies who were recruited from a tertiary care institute of North India (JAIPUR GOLDEN HOSPITAL DELHI) . Anthropometric measurements were taken such as symphysio- fundal height, abdominal circumference etc. Ultrasound estimation was also done. Comparison of the estimation methods were done to see the accuracy of above methods. Results: Primigravida were 50% with 77% participants with gestational age of 38 weeks or more. Mean actual weight was 2.92 kg followed by Johnson (2.89 kg) and Ultrasound methods (2.85 kg). Correlation coefcient was highest for ultrasound (r=0.943) with actual weight. Error was lowest with ultrasound (145 grams) followed by Johnson's (207 grams). Conclusion: Ultrasound is easy to use and newer advancements have made fetal weight estimation accurate. Ultrasound training is also essential to make the fetal weight estimation with minimum error.

Vengadasalam’s book offers a comparison of the literary and artistic practices and philosophies of three authors, two from India (Rabindranath Tagore and Badal Sircar) and one from Nigeria (Wole Soyinka), by examining their dramatic works: four plays in total, which offer an evaluation of the pre and post-independence national environment. Vengadaslam posits that the existing terminology for examining their work in the postcolonial context is insufficient and suggests a new term: “intercultural” to fully explore the magnitude of these writers’ art and the extent of their influence.

The effect of solvents has been found as a crucial factor in determining the regioselectivity of the hydroxyalkylation of indole with trifluoroacetaldehyde hemiacetals. The appropriate selection of the solvent ensured to achieve absolute N1 or C3 regio/chemoselectivity of the reaction depending on the polarity and dielectric constant of the medium. Reaction conditions were optimized considering the effect of solvent, including temperature, time, and molar ratio of reactants to base. In order to rationalize this effect, density functional theory has been employed in which implicit as well as explicit role of solvent was studied, which were further validated with in situ 1H NMR spectroscopy experiments. The comparison of transition states derived from the implicit calculations revealed that the lowest energy path of the reaction in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) leads to product formation with N-selectivity. Further DFT calculations on explicit interactions of indole with DMSO indicated enhanced nucleophilicity on the N atom compared to that of C3 atom, which is evident from the calculated electrostatic potential (ESP) fit charges of these complexes. These findings appear to support the experimental data and explain the N-selectivity in DMSO.

Winter cover crops are sown in between main spring crops (e.g. cash and forage crops) to provide a range of benefits, including the reduction of nitrogen (N) leaching losses to groundwater. However, the extent by which winter cover crops will remain effective under future climate change is unclear. We assess variability and uncertainty of climate change effects on the reduction of N leaching by winter oat cover crops. Field data were collected to quantify ranges of cover crop above-ground biomass (7 to 10 t DM/ha) and N uptake (70 to 180 kg N/ha) under contrasting initial soil conditions. The data were also used to evaluate the APSIM-NextGen model (R2 from 62 to 96% and RMSEr from 7 to 50%), which was then applied to simulate cover crop and fallow conditions across four key agricultural locations in New Zealand, under baseline and future climate scenarios. Cover crops reduced N leaching risks for all location/scenario combinations but with large variability in space and time (e.g. 21 to 47% of fallow) depending on the climate change scenario. For instance, end-of-century estimates for northern (warmer) locations mostly showed non-significant effects of climate change on cover crop effectiveness and N leaching. In contrast for southern (colder) locations, there was a systematic increase in N leaching risks with climate change intensity despite a concomitant, but less than proportional, increase in cover crop effectiveness (up to ~5% of baseline) due to higher winter yields and N uptake. This implies that climate change may not only modify the geography of N leaching hotspots, but also the extent by which cover crops can locally reduce pollution risks, in some cases requiring complementary adaptive measures. The patchy- and threshold-nature of leaching events indicates that fine spatio-temporal resolutions are better suited to evaluate cover crop effectiveness under climate change.

Climate change and the expected increase in intensity and frequency of extreme weather-related events are likely to translate into higher damages and thus an additional financial liability for the EQC. We project future insured damages from extreme precipitation events associated with future projected climatic change. We first estimate the empirical relationship between extreme precipitation events and the EQC's weather-related insurance claims based on a complete dataset of all claims from 2000 to 2017. We then use this estimated relationship, together with climate projections based on future greenhouse gases concentration scenarios from six different dynamically downscaled Regional Climate Models, to predict the impact of future extreme precipitation events on EQC liabilities for different time horizons up to the year 2100. Our results show predicted adverse impacts that vary over time and space. The percent change between projected and past damages—the climate change signal—ranges between an increase of 7%–8% in liabilities for the period 2020 to 2040, and between 9% and 25% higher for the period 2080 to 2100. We also provide detail caveats as towhy these quantities might be mis-estimated. The projected increase in the public insurer's liabilities could also be used to inform private insurers, regulators, and policymakers who are assessing the future performance of both the public and private insurers that cover weatherrelated

The design, synthesis and assessment of β-carboline core-based compounds as potential multifunctional agents against several processes that are believed to play a significant role in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, are described. The activity of the compounds was determined in Aβ self-assembly (fibril and oligomer formation) and cholinesterase (AChE, BuChE) activity inhibition, and their antioxidant properties were also assessed. To obtain insight into the mode of action of the compounds, HR-MS studies were carried out on the inhibitor-Aβ complex formation and molecular docking was performed on inhibitor-BuChE interactions. While several compounds exhibited strong activities in individual assays, compound 14 emerged as a promising multi-target lead for the further structure-activity relationship studies.

Tissue engineering is the science of design and manufacture of new tissues to replace impaired or damaged ones. The key ingredients for tissue engineering are stem cells, the morphogens, or growth factors that regulate their differentiation, and a scaffold of extracellular matrix that constitutes the microenvironment for their growth. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in applying the concept of tissue engineering to endodontics.

One of the most promising methods of unveiling the pharmacology of marketed drugs is to screen them against new biological targets. In an attempt to find inhibitors for acetylcholinesterase (AChE), the Drug Bank Database and natural alkaloids with other known medicinal values were screened through a four-point pharmacophore built in this study. The development of the pharmacophore was based on a structurally diverse set of reported AChE inhibitors and was validated using a separate set of known inhibitors. The developed pharmacophore indicated that the presence of one H-acceptor motif, one H-donor motif, one positively charged group and one aromatic ring is needed for AChE inhibition. Selected hits were further investigated by molecular docking and in vitro testing. The assays revealed that the majority of these compounds showed reasonable inhibition, indicating that the developed pharmacophore can indeed reliably screen molecules for potential AChE inhibitors. It appears that several commercially available marketed drugs have further potential as AChE inhibitors. To extend our study the same compounds have been tested in the fibrillogenesis inhibition of amyloidβ (Aβ) peptide to explore the possibility of their dual-function therapeutic activity in Alzheimer's disease.

The design and application of an effective, new class of multifunctional small molecule inhibitors of amyloid self-assembly are described. Several compounds based on the diaryl hydrazone scaffold were designed. Forty-four substituted derivatives of this core structure were synthesized using a variety of benzaldehydes and phenylhydrazines and characterized. The inhibitor candidates were evaluated in multiple assays, including the inhibition of amyloid β (Aβ) fibrillogenesis and oligomer formation and the reverse processes, the disassembly of preformed fibrils and oligomers. Because the structure of the hydrazone-based inhibitors mimics the redox features of the antioxidant resveratrol, the radical scavenging effect of the compounds was evaluated by colorimetric assays against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and superoxide radicals. The hydrazone scaffold was active in all of the different assays. The structure-activity relationship revealed that the substituents on the aromatic rings had a considerable effect on the overall activity of the compounds. The inhibitors showed strong activity in fibrillogenesis inhibition and disassembly, and even greater potency in the inhibition of oligomer formation and oligomer disassembly. Supporting the quantitative fluorometric and colorimetric assays, size exclusion chromatographic studies indicated that the best compounds practically eliminated or substantially inhibited the formation of soluble, aggregated Aβ species, as well. Atomic force microscopy was also applied to monitor the morphology of Aβ deposits. The compounds also possessed the predicted antioxidant properties; approximately 30% of the synthesized compounds showed a radical scavenging effect equal to or better than that of resveratrol or ascorbic acid.

An undergraduate laboratory exercise is described to demonstrate the biochemical applications of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The β93 cysteine residue of hemoglobin is labeled by the covalent binding of 3-maleimido-proxyl (5-MSL) and 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-1-oxyl-3-methyl methanethiosulfonate (MTSL), respectively. The excess spin label is removed by gel-exclusion chromatography. Changes in the mobility of the reporter groups attached to the protein are monitored by EPR spectroscopy. While the spectral parameters of the rigidly attached 5-MSL provide information on the rotation of the whole spin labeled protein, MTSL bound by a more flexible linkage describes the local environment of the cysteine residue in the interior of the protein structure. Students can study the known crystal structure of hemoglobin in comparison to the results they obtain by analyzing the EPR spectra. Overall, the exercise introduces them to laboratory techniques such as protein labeling, gel filtration, EPR spectroscopy, as well as familiarizes them with the online Protein Data Bank as a research resource and PyMOL software as a structure visualization tool.

The effect of enantiomeric trifluoromethyl-indolyl-acetic acid ethyl esters on the fibrillogenesis of Alzheimer's amyloid beta (Abeta) peptide is described. These compounds have been previously identified as effective inhibitors of the Abeta self-assembly in their racemic form. Thioflavin-T Fluorescence Spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy were applied to assess the potency of the chiral target compounds. Both enantiomers showed significant inhibition in the in vitro assays. The potency of the enantiomeric inhibitors appeared to be very similar to each other suggesting the lack of the stereospecific binding interactions between these small molecule inhibitors and the Abeta peptide.

The annual mass budget of the Greenland ice sheet (1992) and the fresh-water flux from Greenland including the coasts is determined using high-resolution regional climate model (REMO) simulations. The climate model is modified to include processes such as lateral flow over Greenland using a newly developed routing scheme, the effect of sub-grid-scale surface heterogeneity (orography) on surface temperature and runoff and an improved snow and ice model for the Greenland ice sheet for surface processes on the ice sheet. The high-resolution (0.125˚ grid size) simulations of accumulation and runoff fields are also assessed compared to the lower-resolution (0.5˚ grid size) simulations.

Background: Preterm labor (PTL) is considered as one of the leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Preterm labor refers to the onset of uterine contractions of sufficient strength and frequency to effect progressive dilatation and effacement of cervix between 22 and 37 weeks of gestation.Methods: In this study, 285 patients of PTL admitted/treated (during the period of 1st January 2014 to 31st December 2016) across 5 centres in India were enrolled. Adult women with PTL, receiving oral or intravenous regime of tocolytic drugs were screened based on eligibility criteria.Results: We evaluated the practice patterns in the management of PTL in India. The pharmacological management (n=193) was preferred over nonpharmacological management (n=92) in the present study. Amongst the pharmacological agents, isoxsuprine (60.10%) was more frequently used followed by nifedipine (23.83%). Prolongation of delivery for at least 48 hours was observed in 57.76% patients receiving isoxsuprine compared to 34.78% patients receiving nifedipine. The mean latency period (36.77±28.09 vs. 1.44±1.33 days), birthweight (2.25±1.34 vs. 1.07±0.34 kg) and Apgar score at 5 mins (7.56±2.36 vs. 4.87±2.10) was higher for isoxsuprine compared to nifedipine group patients, with mean gestational age of 32 weeks).Conclusions: Pharmacological treatment was preferred for the management of PTL in India. Among pharmacological agents, isoxsuprine was preferred over other tocolytics. Significant improvement in mean latency period, prolongation of delivery beyond 48 hours and perinatal outcomes were noted amongst patients on isoxsuprine versus other pharmacological agents.

Sulfonamide linker-based inhibitors with extended linear structure were designed and synthesized with the aim of producing multifunctional agents against several processes involved in the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The potency of the compounds were assessed in the inhibition of Aβ self-assembly (fibril and oligomer formation), in modulating cholinesterase (AChE, BuChE) activity, and scavenging free radicals. Several compounds exhibited promising Aβ self-assembly and cholinesterase inhibition and in parallel, showed good free radical scavenging properties. The investigation of the scaffold described in this study resulted in the identification of three compounds ( 14 , 19 and 26) as promising leads for the further design of multifunctional drug candidates for AD.

Einstein-Yang-Mills-dilaton theory possesses sequences of neutral static spherically symmetric black hole solutions. The solutions depend on the dilaton coupling constant $\gamma$ and on the horizon. The SU(2) solutions are labelled by the number of nodes $n$ of the single gauge field function, whereas the SO(3) solutions are labelled by the nodes $(n_1,n_2)$ of both gauge field functions. The SO(3) solutions form sequences characterized by the node structure $(j,j+n)$, where $j$ is fixed. The sequences of magnetically neutral solutions tend to magnetically charged limiting solutions. For finite $j$ the SO(3) sequences tend to magnetically charged Einstein-Yang-Mills-dilaton solutions with $j$ nodes and charge $P=\sqrt{3}$. For $j=0$ and $j \rightarrow \infty$ the SO(3) sequences tend to Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton solutions with magnetic charges $P=\sqrt{3}$ and $P=2$, respectively. The latter also represent the scaled limiting solutions of the SU(2) sequence. The convergence of the global properties of the black hole solutions, such as mass, dilaton charge and Hawking temperature, is exponential. In the SU(3) Einstein-Yang-Mills system sequences of static spherically symmetric regular solutions and black hole solutions exist for both the SU(2) and the SO(3) embedding. We construct the lowest regular solutions of the SO(3) embedding, missed previously, and the corresponding black holes. The SO(3) solutions are classified according to their boundary conditions and the number of nodes of the matter functions. An environmentally benign synthesis of azabicyclo[2.2.2]octanones (IV)/(V) and (VII)/(VIII) is described, involving the microwave-assisted tandem condensation—cycloaddition reaction of cyclohexenone (I) with an aniline and a benzaldehyde derivative.

A highly diastereoselective microwave-assisted three component synthesis of azabicyclo[2.2.2]octan-5-ones by a silicotungstic acid-catalyzed aza-Diels–Alder cyclization is described. The one-pot process involves the formation of the in situ generated Schiff base and its immediate cyclization with cyclohex-2-enone. The short reaction times, good yields and excellent diastereoselectivity make this annulation a practical and environmentally attractive method for the synthesis of the target compounds. Preliminary assays were carried out to determine the activity of the products in AChE as well as in amyloid β fibrillogenesis inhibition.

A potential therapeutic approach for Alzheimer’s disease is to reduce the amount of toxic amyloid-beta oligomers and fibrillar amyloid plaques. In order to contribute to this approach the ability of small organofluorine compounds that were previously reported as successful inhibitors of fibrillogenesis to destabilize preformed fibrils of the amyloid-beta peptide was studied. These organofluorine molecules including chiral compounds were tested in vitro using standard methods based on Thioflavin-T (THT) fluorescence spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It was observed that 5′-halogen substituted 3,3,3-trifluoromethyl-2-hydroxyl-(indol-3-yl)-propionic acid esters showed significant activity in the disassembly of the preformed fibrils. Since the same compounds were identified as strong fibrillogenesis inhibitors as well, this dual action makes them promising candidates for further drug development.

International audience; This paper describes a new project trying to harmonise approaches to wave and wind modelling offshore, helping the short-term forecasting and wake research communities by establishing virtual laboratories, offering specialised workshops, and setting up expert groups with large outreach in the mentioned fields. Currently, a good number of research projects is underway on the European and national level in the fields of short-term forecasting of wind power, offshore wind and wave resource prediction, and offshore wakes in large wind farms. The leaders of those research projects are assuming the function of a multiplier towards the larger research and user community. In the fields of short-term forecasting and offshore energy resource, Expert Groups will be formed to act as the central focus point for external stakeholders. The liaison with other groups will also include groups outside of Europe. To facilitate the spread of knowledge, a number of workshops is planned. One of them took place just before this conference on the topic of best practice in the use of short-term forecastingsystems, where utilities with a combined experience of over 50 years and a combined wind power installation of over 30 GW could share their experiences and views on the best use of those systems. A preliminary overview of the resulting best practice guide will be given. One issue hampering the progress in our fields is the difficulty of getting access to good data. In most cases, data on offshore wind or power is strictly confidential, and also data on onshore wind power, especially in conjunction with numerical weather predictions, is not easy to come by. One example of a good testing procedure comes from the Anemos project, where in all 6 test cases were defined, to be run by all involved institutes. This idea is taken to the next level with the set-up of two Virtual Laboratories, one for offshore wake modelling, the other one for short-term forecasting. Both laboratories will be well-defined and maybe already open for business by the time of the workshop.

We consider static axially symmetric Einstein-Yang-Mills black holes in the isolated horizon formalism. The mass of these hairy black holes is related to the mass of the corresponding particle-like solutions by the horizon mass. We construct regular and black hole solutions in SU(2) Einstein-Born-Infeld theory. These solutions have many features in common with the corresponding SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills solutions. In particular, sequences of neutral non-abelian solutions tend to magnetically charged limiting solutions, related to embedded abelian solutions. SU(4) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory possesses sequences of static spherically symmetric globally regular and black hole solutions. Considering solutions with a purely magnetic gauge field, based on the 4-dimensional embedding of $su(2)$ in $su(4)$, these solutions are labelled by the node numbers $(n_1,n_2,n_3)$ of the three gauge field functions $u_1$, $u_2$ and $u_3$. We classify the various types of solutions in sequences and determine their limiting solutions. The limiting solutions of the sequences of neutral solutions carry charge, and the limiting solutions of the sequences of charged solutions carry higher charge. For sequences of black hole solutions with node structure $(n,j,n)$ and $(n,n,n)$, several distinct branches of solutions exist up to critical values of the horizon radius. We determine the critical behaviour for these sequences of solutions. We also consider SU(4) Einstein-Yang-Mills-dilaton theory and show that these sequences of solutions are analogous in most respects to the corresponding SU(4) Einstein-Yang-Mills sequences of solutions., Comment: 40 pages, 5 tables, 19 Postscript figures, use revtex.sty

In Einstein-Maxwell theory black holes are uniquely determined by their mass, their charge and their angular momentum. This is no longer true in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory. We discuss sequences of neutral and charged SU(N) Einstein-Yang-Mills black holes, which are static spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat, and which carry Yang-Mills hair. Furthermore, in Einstein-Maxwell theory static black holes are spherically symmetric.
