1. Impact of electron correlations on two-particle charge response in electron- and hole-doped cuprates

Abstract

Estimating many-body effects that deviate from an independent particle approach has long been a key research interest in condensed matter physics. Layered cuprates are prototypical systems, where electron-electron interactions are found to strongly affect the dynamics of single-particle excitations. It is, however, still unclear how the electron correlations influence charge excitations, such as plasmons, which have been variously treated with either weak or strong correlation models. In this work, we demonstrate the hybridized nature of collective valence charge fluctuations leading to dispersing acoustic-like plasmons in hole-doped La_{1.84}Sr_{0.16}CuO_{4} and electron-doped La_{1.84}Ce_{0.16}CuO_{4} using the two-particle probe, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. We then describe the plasmon dispersions in both systems, within both the weak-coupling mean-field random phase approximation (RPA) and strong-coupling t-J-V model in a large-N scheme. The t-J-V model, which includes the correlation effects implicitly, accurately describes the plasmon dispersions as resonant excitations outside the single-particle intraband continuum. In comparison, a quantitative description of the plasmon dispersion in the RPA approach is obtained only upon explicit consideration of renormalized electronic band parameters. Our comparative analysis shows that electron correlations significantly impact the low-energy plasmon excitations across the cuprate doping phase diagram, even at long wavelengths. Thus, complementary information on the evolution of electron correlations, influenced by the rich electronic phases in condensed matter systems, can be extracted through the study of two-particle charge response.

Abstract

Abstract The universality of the strange metal phase in many quantum materials is often attributed to the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP), a zero-temperature phase transition ruled by quantum fluctuations. In cuprates, where superconductivity hinders direct QCP observation, indirect evidence comes from the identification of fluctuations compatible with the strange metal phase. Here we show that the recently discovered charge density fluctuations (CDF) possess the right properties to be associated to a quantum phase transition. Using resonant x-ray scattering, we studied the CDF in two families of cuprate superconductors across a wide doping range (up to p = 0.22). At p* ≈ 0.19, the putative QCP, the CDF intensity peaks, and the characteristic energy Δ is minimum, marking a wedge-shaped region in the phase diagram indicative of a quantum critical behavior, albeit with anomalies. These findings strengthen the role of charge order in explaining strange metal phenomenology and provide insights into high-temperature superconductivity.

Abstract

Abstract Quantifying the dynamics of normal modes and how they interact with other excitations is of central importance in condensed matter. Spin-lattice coupling is relevant to several sub-fields of condensed matter physics; examples include spintronics, high-T c superconductivity, and topological materials. However, experimental approaches that can directly measure it are rare and incomplete. Here we use time-resolved X-ray diffraction to directly access the ultrafast motion of atoms and spins following the coherent excitation of an electromagnon in a multiferroic hexaferrite. One striking outcome is the different phase shifts relative to the driving field of the two different components. This phase shift provides insight into the excitation process of such a coupled mode. This direct observation of combined lattice and magnetization dynamics paves the way to access the mode-selective spin-lattice coupling strength, which remains a missing fundamental parameter for ultrafast control of magnetism and is relevant to a wide variety of materials.

Abstract

Most of the system-level designs contain sequential circuits. Power optimization of these circuits at many levels is required to build a portable device with a long battery life. A dynamic clock gating technique was used in this work to reduce the power and temperature of a 16-bit counter. The simulation was performed on cadence SCL 180 nm technology, for a supply voltage of 1.8 V at a frequency of 500 MHz. With the proposed approach, a 77.16% power reduction was achieved at the cost of 14.83% in area overhead. Moreover, the layout of the circuits was also designed in the Innovus tool to obtain a more accurate silicon area and gate count. The Innovus output files ".flp file" and ".pptrace file" were used as inputs to the HotSpot tool for determining the absolute temperature of the integrated circuits (ICs). The obtained temperature results were compared with the ordinary 16-bit counter, and it was found that the proposed approach was able to reduce temperature by 14.34%.

Abstract

Abstract A photon carrying one unit of angular momentum can change the spin angular momentum of a magnetic system with one unit (ΔMs = ±1) at most. This implies that a two-photon scattering process can manipulate the spin angular momentum of the magnetic system with a maximum of two units. Herein we describe a triple-magnon excitation in α-Fe2O3, which contradicts this conventional wisdom that only 1- and 2-magnon excitations are possible in a resonant inelastic X-ray scattering experiment. We observe an excitation at exactly three times the magnon energy, along with additional excitations at four and five times the magnon energy, suggesting quadruple and quintuple-magnons as well. Guided by theoretical calculations, we reveal how a two-photon scattering process can create exotic higher-rank magnons and the relevance of these quasiparticles for magnon-based applications.

In flat band materials, the ’flat’ dispersion of the electronic states mean that interactions between electrons can be strong, potentially leading to a variety of interesting magnetic and transport properties. Here, Nag et al study the Kagomé semimetal Co3Sn2S2, and show a nearly flat Stoner excitation dispersion, a clear indication of spin-polarized and flat electronic bands.

Abstract Cuprate superconductors have the highest critical temperatures (T c) at ambient pressure, yet a consensus on the superconducting mechanism remains to be established. Finding an empirical parameter that limits the highest reachable T c can provide crucial insight into this outstanding problem. Here, in the first two Ruddlesden-Popper members of the model Hg-family of cuprates, which are chemically nearly identical and have the highest T c among all cuprate families, we use inelastic photon scattering to reveal that the energy of magnetic fluctuations may play such a role. In particular, we observe the single-paramagnon spectra to be nearly identical between the two compounds, apart from an energy scale difference of ~30% which matches their difference in T c. The empirical correlation between paramagnon energy and maximal T c is further found to extend to other cuprate families with relatively high T c’s, hinting at a fundamental connection between them.

Abstract

The I21 beamline at Diamond Light Source is dedicated to advanced resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) for probing charge, orbital, spin and lattice excitations in materials across condensed matter physics, applied sciences and chemistry. Both the beamline and the RIXS spectrometer employ divergent variable-line-spacing gratings covering a broad energy range of 280–3000 eV. A combined energy resolution of ∼35 meV (16 meV) is readily achieved at 930 eV (530 eV) owing to the optimized optics and the mechanics. Considerable efforts have been paid to the design of the entire beamline, particularly the implementation of the collection mirrors, to maximize the X-ray photon throughput. The continuous rotation of the spectrometer over 150° under ultra high vacuum and a cryogenic manipulator with six degrees of freedom allow accurate mappings of low-energy excitations from solid state materials in momentum space. Most importantly, the facility features a unique combination of the high energy resolution and the high photon throughput vital for advanced RIXS applications. Together with its stability and user friendliness, I21 has become one of the most sought after RIXS beamlines in the world.

These results are in accord with observations in 3d oxides and show that the greater covalency of the 4d and 5d oxides does not stabilise peroxo-like species.

Abstract

Charge-transfer insulators are the parent phase of a large group of today's unconventional high-temperature superconductors. Here we study experimentally and theoretically the interband excitations of the charge-transfer insulator silver fluoride AgF_{2}, which has been proposed as an excellent analog of oxocuprates. Optical conductivity and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering on AgF_{2} polycrystalline sample show a close similarity with that measured on undoped La_{2}CuO_{4}. While the former shows a charge-transfer gap ∼3.4 eV, larger than in the cuprate, dd excitations are nearly at the same energy in the two materials. Density functional theory and exact diagonalization cluster computations of the multiplet spectra show that AgF_{2} is more covalent than the cuprate, in spite of the larger fundamental gap. Furthermore, we show that AgF_{2} is at the verge of a charge-transfer instability. The overall resemblance of our data on AgF_{2} to those published previously on La_{2}CuO_{4} suggests that the underlying charge-transfer insulator physics is the same, while AgF_{2} could also benefit from a proximity to a charge density wave phase as in BaBiO_{3}. Therefore, our work provides a compelling support to the future use of fluoroargentates for materials' engineering of novel high-temperature superconductors.

Abstract

Oxide ions in transition metal oxide cathodes can store charge at high voltage offering a route towards higher energy density batteries. However, upon charging these cathodes, the oxidized oxide ions condense to form molecular O2 trapped in the material. Consequently, the discharge voltage is much lower than charge, leading to undesirable voltage hysteresis. Here we capture the nature of the electron holes on O2− before O2 formation by exploiting the suppressed transition metal rearrangement in ribbon-ordered Na0.6[Li0.2Mn0.8]O2. We show that the electron holes formed are delocalized across the oxide ions coordinated to two Mn (O–Mn2) arranged in ribbons in the transition metal layers. Furthermore, we track these delocalized hole states as they gradually localize in the structure in the form of trapped molecular O2 over a period of days. Establishing the nature of hole states on oxide ions is important if truly reversible high-voltage O-redox cathodes are to be realized.

Abstract

Large-scale phenome-wide association studies performed using densely-phenotyped cohorts such as the UK Biobank (UKB), reveal many statistically robust gene-phenotype relationships for both clinical and continuous traits. Here, we present Gene-SCOUT, a tool used to identify genes with similar continuous trait fingerprints to a gene of interest. A fingerprint reflects the continuous traits identified to be statistically associated with a gene of interest based on multiple underlying rare variant genetic architectures. Similarities between genes are evaluated by the cosine similarity measure, to capture concordant effect directionality, elucidating clusters of genes in a high dimensional space. The underlying gene-biomarker population-scale association statistics were obtained from a gene-level rare variant collapsing analysis performed on over 1500 continuous traits using 394 692 UKB participant exomes, with additional metabolomic trait associations provided through Nightingale Health's recent study of 121 394 of these participants. We demonstrate that gene similarity estimates from Gene-SCOUT provide stronger enrichments for clinical traits compared to existing methods. Furthermore, we provide a fully interactive web-resource (http://genescout.public.cgr.astrazeneca.com) to explore the pre-calculated exome-wide similarities. This resource enables a user to examine the biological relevance of the most similar genes for Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment and UKB clinical trait enrichment statistics, as well as a detailed breakdown of the traits underpinning a given fingerprint.

Abstract

We performed collapsing analyses on 454,796 UK Biobank (UKB) exomes to detect gene-level associations with diabetes. Recessive carriers of nonsynonymous variants in MAP3K15 were 30% less likely to develop diabetes ( P = 5.7 × 10 −10 ) and had lower glycosylated hemoglobin (β = −0.14 SD units, P = 1.1 × 10 −24 ). These associations were independent of body mass index, suggesting protection against insulin resistance even in the setting of obesity. We replicated these findings in 96,811 Admixed Americans in the Mexico City Prospective Study ( P < 0.05)Moreover, the protective effect of MAP3K15 variants was stronger in individuals who did not carry the Latino-enriched SLC16A11 risk haplotype ( P = 6.0 × 10 −4 ). Separately, we identified a Finnish-enriched MAP3K15 protein-truncating variant associated with decreased odds of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes ( P < 0.05) in FinnGen. No adverse phenotypes were associated with protein-truncating MAP3K15 variants in the UKB, supporting this gene as a therapeutic target for diabetes.

The evolution of magnetic polarons in Sr doped LaCoO_{3} (La_{1-x}Sr_{x}CoO_{3}) single crystal and polycrystalline samples are investigated by employing dc and ac magnetic measurement and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) techniques. The effect of magnetic field and temperature on magnetic polarons is experimentally studied for La_{0.875}Sr_{0.125}CoO_{3} and La_{0.85}Sr_{0.15}CoO_{3} compounds that belong to the spin glass insulating regime of the broader compositional phase diagram of this system. Langevin analyses of the isothermal magnetization curves in the notional paramagnetic regime prove the existence of magnetic polarons with large moments. The dc field superimposed ac susceptibility data and the analysis of the glassy dynamics prove that the size of polarons in 15% Sr doped crystal increase as the field is increased while the field effect is not visible in the 12.5% Sr doped crystal. A polycrystalline sample of La_{0.85}Sr_{0.15}CoO_{3} is analyzed by SANS experiments, which confirm nonzero correlation length at temperatures far above the macroscopic ordering temperature and hence the presence of magnetic polarons.

Abstract

Due to technological advancements and voltage scaling, leakage power has become an important concern in CMOS design. The implementation of a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) circuit utilizes a portion of the FPGA’s resources as compared to an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). Both the utilized and unutilized parts of the FPGA dissipate leakage power. In this work, two dynamic power gating techniques, PSG-1 and PSG-2, are proposed, which are able to reduce the leakage power of the 6-input look-up table (LUT) used in the Xilinx Spartan-6 series. The obtained results show that the proposed approaches PSG-1 and PSG-2 reduce average leakage power by 54.61% and 66.69%, respectively, at the expense of nominal area and delay overhead. The proposed method is also capable of lowering the average total power of the 6-input LUT. The suggested PSG-1 and PSG-2 approaches reduce average power by 53.75% and 60.83%, respectively. However, header-based power supply gating is extremely vulnerable to the negative-bias temperature instability (NBTI) aging effect and, due to this, the lifetime of the circuit is reduced considerably. Therefore, in this work, lifetime estimation-based analysis is performed by varying the stress probability of the sleep transistor. The results show that the LUT with PSG-1 and PSG-2 techniques has a lifetime of 4.55 years and 11.13 years, respectively. The stress time of the sleep transistor is 50% for the PSG-1 technique and 25% for the PSG-2 technique, respectively.

Abstract

Li-rich cathode materials are potential candidates for next-generation Li-ion batteries. However, they exhibit a large voltage hysteresis on the first charge/discharge cycle, which involves a substantial (up to 1 V) loss of voltage and therefore energy density. For Na cathodes, for example Na0.75[Li0.25Mn0.75]O2, voltage hysteresis can be explained by the formation of molecular O2 trapped in voids within the particles. Here we show that this is also the case for Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2. Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and 17O magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy show that molecular O2, rather than O22−, forms within the particles on the oxidation of O2− at 4.6 V versus Li+/Li on charge. These O2 molecules are reduced back to O2− on discharge, but at the lower voltage of 3.75 V, which explains the voltage hysteresis in Li-rich cathodes. 17O magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy indicates a quantity of bulk O2 consistent with the O-redox charge capacity minus the small quantity of O2 loss from the surface. The implication is that O2, trapped in the bulk and lost from the surface, can explain O-redox. Understanding the severe voltage hysteresis in the first cycle of Li-rich cathodes is essential to realize their full potential in batteries. P. G. Bruce and colleagues report the formation of molecular O2 on charging rather than other oxidized O species is the cause for the voltage hysteresis.

Abstract

Copper oxide high-TC superconductors possess a number of exotic orders that coexist with or are proximal to superconductivity. Quantum fluctuations associated with these orders may account for the unusual characteristics of the normal state, and possibly affect the superconductivity1–4. Yet, spectroscopic evidence for such quantum fluctuations remains elusive. Here, we use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to reveal spectroscopic evidence of fluctuations associated with a charge order5–14 in nearly optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ. In the superconducting state, while the quasielastic charge order signal decreases with temperature, the interplay between charge order fluctuations and bond-stretching phonons in the form of a Fano-like interference increases, an observation that is incompatible with expectations for competing orders. Invoking general principles, we argue that this behaviour reflects the properties of a dissipative system near an order–disorder quantum critical point, where the dissipation varies with the opening of the pseudogap and superconducting gap at low temperatures, leading to the proliferation of quantum critical fluctuations, which melt charge order. X-ray scattering experiments show that the quantum fluctuations associated with charge order take a form that is incompatible with the idea of competition between charge order and superconductivity.

Abstract

A growing number of genetic loci have been shown to influence individual predisposition to type 2 diabetes (T2D). Despite longstanding interest in understanding whether non-linear interactions between these risk-variants additionally influence T2D-risk, the ability to detect significant gene-gene interaction (GGI) effects has to date been limited. To increase power to detect GGI effects, we combined recent advances in the fine-mapping of causal T2D-risk variants with the increased sample size available within UK Biobank (375,736 unrelated European participants, including 16,430 T2D cases). In addition to conventional single variant-based analysis, we employed a complementary polygenic score-based approach which included partitioned T2D-risk scores that capture biological processes relevant to T2D pathophysiology. Nevertheless, we found no evidence in support of GGI effects influencing T2D-risk. The present study was powered to detect interactions between common variants with odds ratios >1.2, so these findings place limits on the contribution of GGIs to the overall heritability of T2D.

Abstract

An exciton is the bosonic quasiparticle of electron–hole pairs bound by the Coulomb interaction1. Bose–Einstein condensation of this exciton state has long been the subject of speculation in various model systems2,3, and examples have been found more recently in optical lattices and two-dimensional materials4–9. Unlike these conventional excitons formed from extended Bloch states4–9, excitonic bound states from intrinsically many-body localized states are rare. Here we show that a spin–orbit-entangled exciton state appears below the Neel temperature of 150 kelvin in NiPS3, an antiferromagnetic van der Waals material. It arises intrinsically from the archetypal many-body states of the Zhang–Rice singlet10,11, and reaches a coherent state assisted by the antiferromagnetic order. Using configuration-interaction theory, we determine the origin of the coherent excitonic excitation to be a transition from a Zhang–Rice triplet to a Zhang–Rice singlet. We combine three spectroscopic tools—resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, photoluminescence and optical absorption—to characterize the exciton and to demonstrate an extremely narrow excitonic linewidth below 50 kelvin. The discovery of the spin–orbit-entangled exciton in antiferromagnetic NiPS3 introduces van der Waals magnets as a platform to study coherent many-body excitons. A spin–orbit-entangled exciton state in the van der Waals material NiPS3 is observed, and found to arise from many-body states of a Zhang–Rice singlet.

Abstract

Charge density waves (CDWs) are ubiquitous in under-doped cuprate superconductors. As a modulation of the valence electron density, CDWs in hole-doped cuprates possess both Cu-3d and O-2p orbital character owing to the strong hybridization of these orbitals near the Fermi level. Here, we investigate under-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.4}$La$_{0.6}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and find that a short-range CDW exists at both Cu and O sublattices in the copper-oxide (CuO2) planes with a comparable periodicity and correlation length. Furthermore, we uncover bond-stretching and bond-buckling phonon anomalies concomitant to the CDWs. Comparing to slightly over-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.8}$La$_{0.2}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$, where neither CDWs nor phonon anomalies appear, we highlight that a sharp intensity anomaly is induced in the proximity of the CDW wavevector (QCDW) for the bond-buckling phonon, in concert with the diffused intensity enhancement of the bond-stretching phonon at wavevectors much greater than QCDW. Abstract

While electron-phonon coupling (EPC) is crucial for Cooper pairing in conventional superconductors, its role in high-$T_c$ superconducting cuprates is debated. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the oxygen $K$-edge, we studied the EPC in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ (Bi2212) and Nd$_{1+x}$Ba$_{2-x}$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ (NBCO) at different doping levels ranging from heavily underdoped ($p =0.07$) to overdoped ($p=0.21$). We analyze the data with a localized Lang-Firsov model that allows for the coherent excitations of two phonon modes. While electronic band dispersion effects are non-negligible, we are able to perform a study of the relative values of EPC matrix elements in these cuprate families. In the case of NBCO, the choice of the excitation energy allows us to disentangle modes related to the CuO$_3$ chains and the CuO$_2$ planes. Combining the results from the two families, we find the EPC strength decreases with doping at $\mathbf{q_\parallel}=(-0.25, 0)$ r.l.u., but has a non-monotonic trend as a function of doping at smaller momenta. This behavior is attributed to the screening effect of charge carriers. We also find that the phonon intensity is enhanced in the vicinity of the charge-density-wave (CDW) excitations while the extracted EPC strength appears to be less sensitive to their proximity. By performing a comparative study of two cuprate families, we are able to identify general trends in the EPC for the cuprates and provide experimental input to theories invoking a synergistic role for this interaction in $d$-wave pairing., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Genome-wide association studies have established the contribution of common and low frequency variants to metabolic biomarkers in the UK Biobank (UKB); however, the role of rare variants remains to be assessed systematically. We evaluated rare coding variants for 198 metabolic biomarkers, including metabolites assayed by Nightingale Health, using exome sequencing in participants from four genetically diverse ancestries in the UKB (N=412,394). Gene-level collapsing analysis – that evaluated a range of genetic architectures – identified a total of 1,303 significant relationships between genes and metabolic biomarkers (p−8), encompassing 207 distinct genes. These include associations between rare non-synonymous variants inGIGYF1and glucose and lipid biomarkers,SYT7and creatinine, and others, which may provide insights into novel disease biology. Comparing to a previous microarray-based genotyping study in the same cohort, we observed that 40% of gene-biomarker relationships identified in the collapsing analysis were novel. Finally, we applied Gene-SCOUT, a novel tool that utilises the gene-biomarker association statistics from the collapsing analysis to identify genes having similar biomarker fingerprints and thus expand our understanding of gene networks.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic health condition that can result in significant end-organ complications and is estimated to impact at least 8.5% of the global adult population. Here, we performed gene-level collapsing analysis on exome sequences from 454,796 multi-ancestry UK Biobank participants to detect genetic associations with diabetes. Rare non-synonymous variants in GCK, GIGYF1, HNF1A, and HNF4A were significantly associated (P-8) with increased risk of diabetes, whereas rare non-synonymous variants in MAP3K15 were significantly associated with reduced risk of diabetes. Recessive carriers of rare non-synonymous variants in the X chromosome gene MAP3K15 had a 30% reduced risk of diabetes (OR=0.70, 95% CI: [0.62,0.79], P=5.7×10-10), along with reduced blood glucose (beta=-0.13, 95% CI: [-0.15,-0.10], P=5.5×10-18) and reduced glycosylated haemoglobin levels (beta=-0.14, 95% CI: [-0.16,-0.11], P=1.1×10-24). Hemizygous males carrying protein-truncating variants (PTVs) in MAP3K15 demonstrated a 40% reduced risk of diabetes (OR=0.60, 95% CI: [0.45,0.81], P=0.0007). These findings were independently replicated in FinnGen, with a MAP3K15 PTV associating with decreased risk of both type 1 diabetes (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) (pMAP3K15 loss on diabetes was independent of body mass index, suggesting its protective effect is unlikely to be mediated via the insulin resistance pathway. Tissue expression profile of MAP3K15 indicates a possible involvement of pancreatic islet cell or stress response pathways. No safety concerns were identified among heterozygous or recessive MAP3K15 PTV carriers across over 15,719 studied endpoints in the UK Biobank. Human population genetic evidence supports MAP3K15 inhibition as a novel therapeutic target for diabetes.

Abstract

A search for high-mass dielectron and dimuon resonances in the mass range of 250 GeV to 6 TeV is presented. The data were recorded by the ATLAS experiment in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb −1 . A functional form is fitted to the dilepton invariant-mass distribution to model the contribution from background processes, and a generic signal shape is used to determine the significance of observed deviations from this background estimate. No significant deviation is observed and upper limits are placed at the 95% confidence level on the fiducial cross-section times branching ratio for various resonance width hypotheses. The derived limits are shown to be applicable to spin-0, spin-1 and spin-2 signal hypotheses. For a set of benchmark models, the limits are converted into lower limits on the resonance mass and reach 4.5 TeV for the E 6 -motivated Zψ′ boson. Also presented are limits on Heavy Vector Triplet model couplings.

Abstract

Cuprate superconductors have the highest critical temperatures (Tc) at ambient pressure, yet a consensus on the superconducting mechanism remains to be established. Finding an empirical parameter that limits the highest reachable Tc can provide crucial insight into this outstanding problem. Here, in the first two Ruddlesden-Popper members of the model Hg-family of cuprates, which are chemically nearly identical and have the highest Tc among all cuprate families, we use inelastic photon scattering to reveal that the energy of magnetic fluctuations may play such a role. In particular, we observe the single-paramagnon spectra to be nearly identical between the two compounds, apart from an energy scale difference of ~30% which matches their difference in Tc. The empirical correlation between paramagnon energy and maximal Tc is further found to extend to other cuprate families with relatively high Tc’s, hinting at a fundamental connection between them.

Abstract

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is a powerful probe of elementary excitations in solids. It is now widely applied to study magnetic excitations. However, its complex cross section means that RIXS has been more difficult to interpret than inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Here we report $\ensuremath{\sim}37$ meV resolution RIXS measurements of the magnetic excitations in ${\mathrm{La}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$, the antiferromagnetic parent of one system of high-temperature superconductors. At high energies ($\ensuremath{\sim}2$ eV), the RIXS spectra show angular-dependent $dd$ orbital excitations in agreement with previous RIXS studies but show new structure. They are interpreted with single-site multiplet calculations. At low energies ($\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.3$ eV), we model the wave-vector-dependent single magnon RIXS intensity as the product of the calculated single-ion spin-flip RIXS cross section and the dynamical structure factor $S(\mathbf{Q},\ensuremath{\omega})$ of the spin-wave excitations. When $S(\mathbf{Q},\ensuremath{\omega})$ is extracted from our data, the wave-vector-dependence of the single-magnon pole intensity shows a similar variation to that observed by INS. Our results confirm that suitably corrected RIXS data can yield the genuine wave-vector and energy dependence of $S(\mathbf{Q},\ensuremath{\omega})$ for a cuprate antiferromagnet. In addition to spin waves, our data show structured multimagnon excitations with dispersing peaks in the intensity at energies higher than the single-magnon excitations.

Abstract

Electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions are found to cooperatively drive the long-range charge order in cuprates., Charge order is universal to all hole-doped cuprates. Yet, the driving interactions remain an unsolved problem. Electron-electron interaction is widely believed to be essential, whereas the role of electron-phonon interaction is unclear. We report an ultrahigh-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of the in-plane bond-stretching phonon mode in stripe-ordered cuprate La1.675Eu0.2Sr0.125CuO4. Phonon softening and lifetime shortening are found around the charge ordering wave vector. In addition to these self-energy effects, the electron-phonon coupling is probed by its proportionality to the RIXS cross section. We find an enhancement of the electron-phonon coupling around the charge-stripe ordering wave vector upon cooling into the low-temperature tetragonal structure phase. These results suggest that, in addition to electronic correlations, electron-phonon coupling contributes substantially to the emergence of long-range charge-stripe order in cuprates.
