B1 deficiency is a very prevalent complication of bariatric surgery. This study reviews prevalence and symptoms of B1 vitamin deficiency after bariatric surgery. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science published were searched up to 10 Feb 2022, with the following keywords: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, one anastomosis gastric bypass, Omega bypass, Mini bypass, Bariatric surgery OR Bariatric surgery, metabolic surgery, Weight loss surgery, Classic gastric bypass, Loop gastric bypass, Gastric Bypass, thiamine OR thiamin, beriberi, B1. A total of 11 studies examining 1494 patients were included in this meta-analysis. Twenty-seven percent of patients who underwent bariatric surgeries experience vitamin B1 deficiency. Thiamine supplements should be prescribed for the patients for the rest of their lives, and also standard post-surgery follow-ups are necessary in terms of monitoring dietary factors.

The effects of the MTHFR rs1801133 (677CT) and rs180113 (1298AC) polymorphisms on bladder cancer risk have been evaluated in some studies. However, the results were conflicting and ambiguous. Therefore, we aimed to perform a comprehensive meta-analysis to investigate the association of these polymorphisms with risk of bladder cancer from all eligible case-control studies. PubMed, Web of science, Scopus, SID, CNKI and SciELO databases were searched to identify all relevant studies published up to 1 January, 2021. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to estimate the strength of associations. A total of 20 case-control studies including 11 studies with 3463 cases and 3927 controls on MTHFR rs1801133 (677CT) and 9 studies with 3177 cases and 3502 controls on rs180113 (1298AC) polymorphism were selected. Pooled data revealed that the MTHFR rs1801133 (677CT) and rs180113 (1298AC) polymorphisms were not associated with risk bladder cancer in overall. Stratified analysis by ethnicity revealed that the MTHFR rs1801133 (677CT) and rs180113 (1298AC) polymorphisms were associated with bladder cancer risk in Asians, but not in Caucasians. There was no publication bias. The current meta-analysis revealed that the MTHFR rs1801133 (677CT) and rs180113 (1298AC) polymorphisms were not risk factor for development of bladder cancer globally. However, large sample size, well-designed, and population-based studies should be performed to verify the association of the MTHFR polymorphisms with bladder cancer risk.

Background: Epidermal cysts are mostly benign tumors with a dome-like appearance usually observed in the body, behind the ears, and in the cervical area. Objectives: The study aimed to compare the surgical results of minimal excision and elliptical excision techniques in the surgical management of epidermal cysts. Methods: In a 24-month period, from 2012 to 2015, 356 patients with benign, non-infected epidermal cysts were surgically managed with minimal excision (n = 178) or elliptical excision (n = 178) techniques. Patient information, volume and place of the lesion, the length of the wound, the time of surgical procedure, and recurrence rate were evaluated using SPSS software at a significance level of < 0.05. Results: The mean length of the wounds in the minimal excision and elliptical excision groups was 2.3 ± 0.32 and 2.7 ± 0.11 cm, respectively (P = 0.001). The mean operative time was significantly shorter in the minimal excision technique (6.4 ± 2.09 minutes) than in the elliptical excision technique (11.3 ± 3.35 minutes) (P = 0.001). There was no significant difference in the recurrence rate in minimal excision technique (2.8 %) than in elliptical excision technique (3.3%) (P = 0.065). Conclusions: Minimal excision produced a superior cosmetic result. Epidermal inclusion cysts measuring less than 3 cm that were observed on the head or cosmetically important zones were optimally managed with the minimal excision technique.

Background: Peritoneal tuberculosis accounts 1-2% of all forms of tuberculosis. Peritoneal tuberculosis is an important differential diagnosis for ovarian cancer in women with ascites, adnexal mass and elevated cancer antigen 125 (CA125) levels. We report a case of a 32- year -old woman with multiple miliary peritoneal deposits mimicking advanced ovarian carcinoma. Case Presentation: A 32-year-old drug addicted woman presented with menometrorrhagia, fever and shivering, ascites and pelvis mass. Ultrasonography revealed a 53×65 mm cyst in left ovary and ascites. Multiple miliary peritoneal deposits were observed during laparatomy without any mass, histologic examination confirmed tuberculosis of uterus, tubes, omentum, liver and external surfaces of small intestine. Finally, the patient recovered with anti-tuberculosis treatment. Conclusion: These findings highlight considering tuberculosis in the differential diagnosis of any patients with adnexal mass, ascitis and elevated serum CA125 even with negative cytology and bacteriology test results.

Nimodipine is a US Food and Drug Administration approved drug that has been shown to act as a possible pharmacologic treatment for facial nerve injury. The objective was to assess the effect of locally administered nimodipine on transected peripheral nerve regeneration and functional recovery. Sixty male healthy white Wistar rats were divided into four experimental groups (n = 15), randomly: In transected group (TC), left sciatic nerve was transected and stumps were fixed in the adjacent muscle. In treatment group defect was bridged using an inside-out artery graft (IOAG/Nimodipine) filled with 10 μL nimodipine (100 ng/mL). In artery graft group (IOAG), the graft was filled with phosphate-buffered saline alone. In sham-operated group (SHAM), sciatic nerve was exposed and manipulated. Each group was subdivided into three subgroups of five animals each and regenerated nerve fibers were studied 4, 8 and 12 weeks after surgery. Behavioral testing, biomechanical studies, sciatic nerve functional study, gastrocnemius muscle mass and morphometric indices confirmed faster recovery of regenerated axons in IOAG/Nimodipine than IOAG group (p < 0.05). In immunohistochemistry, location of reactions to S- 100 in IOAG/Nimodipine was clearly more positive than that in IOAG group.When loaded in an artery graft nimodipine accelerated and improved functional recovery and morphometric indices of sciatic nerve. This may have clinical implications for the surgical management of patients after facial nerve transection.
