This study explores adolescent reasoning behind the use of alcohol at different types of parties, often house parties, and about the strategies to achieve maturity and prevent losing control. The data consist of semi-structured interviews with 23 adolescents aged 16–18 years (16 males and seven females). The interview transcripts were analysed using an inductive, thematic approach. All informants had personal experience with drinking at parties in different social settings. Our results suggest that the process of learning how to drink, often through failure in terms of being intoxicated, is important for adolescents’ who strive to control their alcohol intake resulted in a good time and a break from everyday life. Furthermore, the results indicate that different social settings and party types engender different drinking patterns. Maturity and controlled conduct come across as desired ideals that provide a person with symbolic capital and thus, social status.

AIM – The study explores arenas of adolescent binge drinking in small Swedish towns and the meanings these have for young persons. The focus is thus on space and place, and on the geography of underage drinking. DESIGN – An ethnographic approach was used, including direct observations, document studies and contacts with youth workers on local and national levels, and interviews with 28 underage binge-drinking adolescents chosen as informants. FINDINGS – Adolescent binge drinkers seem to have moved away from street and other outdoor drinking arenas to home environments, where they feel they have more control over their party location and participants. CONCLUSIONS – One consequence of outdoor drinking moving indoors is that professional youth workers and police cannot enter party arenas and the only adults who can do so are the parents. This has implications for preventive alcohol strategies and outreach social work. Measures should be directed to parents to make them fully aware of the importance of the party location in their homes.

Background. Samis are indigenous people in north Europe. In the territory called Sapmi (Lapland), reindeer herding is the traditional base for the Sami economy. The relation between living conditions and positive health of the Swedish Samis has been sparsely studied. As health is closely linked to sense of coherence (SOC), an understanding of the background factors to SOC may contribute knowledge that might be useful in promoting living conditions and health. Methods. The study examines relations between the level of SOC and background factors from surveys in a Sami population (n = 613) in comparison to a non-Sami population (n = 525) in Sweden, and in comparison between 2 subsamples of Samis, that is, herders and non-herders. Results. There are more similarities than differences between the Sami and non-Sami populations. However, dividing the Sami population, reindeer herders had significantly lower SOC, and in specific the subcomponent manageability, that is, less ability to use available resources to meet different demands in life, compared to non-herders. Conclusions. In addition to age and health, predictors of SOC are related to the life form of reindeer husbandry and the belonging to the herding community.

Background: Despite the low prevalence of daily smokers in Sweden, children are still being exposed to nvironmental tobacco smoke (ETS), primarily by their smoking parents. A prospective intervention study using ethods from Quality Improvement was performed in Child Health Care (CHC). The aim was to provide nurses with ew methods for motivating and supporting parents in their efforts to protect children from ETS exposure. Method: Collaborative learning was used to implement and test an intervention bundle. Twenty-two CHC nurses ecruited 86 families with small children which had at least one smoking parent. Using a bundle of interventions, urses met and had dialogues with the parents over a one-year period. A detailed questionnaire on cigarette onsumption and smoking policies in the home was answered by the parents at the beginning and at the end of he intervention, when children also took urine tests to determine cotinine levels. Results: Seventy-two families completed the study. Ten parents (11%) quit smoking. Thirty-two families (44%) ecreased their cigarette consumption. Forty-five families (63%) were outdoor smokers at follow up. The proportion f children with urinary cotinine values of >6 ng/ml had decreased. Conclusion: The intensified tobacco prevention in CHC improved smoking parents’ ability to protect their children rom ETS exposure.

Introduction: Family centres in Sweden are integrated services that reach all prospective parents and parents with children up to their sixth year, because of the co-location of the health service with the social service and the open pre-school. The personnel on the multi-professional site work together to meet the needs of the target group. The article explores a program theory focused on the open pre-schools at family centres. Method: A multi-case design is used and the sample consists of open pre-schools at six family centres. The hypothesis is based on previous research and evaluation data. It guides the data collection which is collected and analysed stepwise. Both parents and personnel are interviewed individually and in groups at each centre. Findings: The hypothesis was expanded to a program theory. The compliance of the professionals was the most significant element that explained why the open access service facilitated positive parenting. The professionals act in a compliant manner to meet the needs of the children and parents as well as in creating good conditions for social networking and learning amongst the parents. Conclusion: The compliance of the professionals in this program theory of open pre-schools at family centres can be a standard in integrated and open access services, whereas the organisation form can vary. The best way of increasing the number of integrative services is to support and encourage professionals that prefer to work in a compliant manner.

Nationell Patientöversikt (NPÖ) är ett informationssystem som gör det möjligt för behörig vårdpersonal att med patientens samtycke ta del av journalinformation som har registrerats hos andra vårdgivare. Denna rapport behandlar mervärden och begränsningar i NPÖ och är ett resultat av en studie som på uppdrag av SKL genomförts i Jönköpings Län. Studien pågick från den 1 september 2012 till den 28 februari 2013 och var en av tre delar i projektet ”Gemensam informationsåtkomst mellan landsting och kommun genom NPÖ – en kunskapsöversikt i tre län”. Studien genomfördes genom semistrukturerade intervjuer som analyserades kvalitativt. Studiens syfte var att besvara följande fyra frågor: Vilken journalinformation kommer att visas i NPÖ? Ger informationen i NPÖ en tillräckligt fullständig bild av patientens tillstånd? Vilket förtroende har personalen för NPÖ som stöd? Hur kan journalinformationen i NPÖ kvalitetskontrolleras? Svaret på de tre första är beroende av den producerande organisationens rutiner och arbetssätt. Om tekniken är stabil, om journalinformation snabbt kan speglas upp i NPÖ, om alla producenter lägger upp de informationsmängder som verkligen behövs och om de dokumenterar på ett standardiserat sätt i dessa informationsmängder samt om det finns möjlighet att inhämta samtycke från alla patientkategorier så tidigt i processen som det behövs är NPÖ en bra källa till information för kommunernas personal. Alla dessa förutsättningar är i nuläget inte uppfyllda. NPÖ löser inte heller behovet av tillförlitlig information om patienternas läkemedel. I de olika verksamheterna finns en mångfald av redan etablerade informationssystem, såväl manuella som digitala, i vilken NPÖ ska hitta sin roll. När det gäller svaret på den sista frågan kan konstateras att ingen kvalitetsgranskning av den sammanlagda informationen i NPÖ kan ske. Patientdatalagen hindrar i nuläget detta. Objective: To illustrate how nurses can promote family wellness and facilitate acculturation for involuntary migrant families as conceptualized by bilingual interpreters and cultural mediators with own past refugee experience. Due to the nature of involuntary migration and accompanying acculturation, refugee families face a complex transition, exposing them to vulnerability in cohesion and family function. Involuntary migrant health needs are largely managed within the Primary Health Care sector where Primary Health Care Nurses (PHCN) play an important role. Additionally, bilingual interpreters and cultural mediators with personal experience of being refugees and subsequent acculturation play a critical role in bridging the language and cultural gap between migrant families and PHCNs. Methods: The study is descriptive and explorative in design with a phenomenographic approach. Data was collected in Southern Sweden utilizing in-depth interviews with ten bilingual interpreters and cultural mediators originating from the Balkans, Kurdistan, Eritrea and Somalia. A contextual analysis with reference to phenomenography was used in interpreting the data material. Results: Three separate themes illustrated the meaning of family wellness: a sense of belonging to the new homeland, the maintenance of self-esteem and stable family interrelationships. The analysis demonstrated that the way ex-refugee bilingual interpreters and cultural mediators perceived of how to promote family wellness, fell into three qualitative different conceptions: (1) Promotion of family wellness is the responsibility of the family itself, manifested in its attitude in wanting to adjust to change, (2) Promotion of family wellness is the consideration of those outside the family and is marked by understanding and respectful attitudes, (3) Promotion of family wellness is a societal responsibility to which successful integration is a prerequisite. In this article we use two immigrant projects, operating in a Swedish context, as a basis for discussing and analysing the potential of joint projects as a tool for change in human welfare service organisations that target the general public. The extensive use of projects in the development of a slimmed-down public sector can be seen as originating from the contradictory promises of projects regarding flexibility and rationality in the new public management context. Projects are also used as a way to obtain more resources for specific long-term needs, but they are seldom implemented as intended in the regular 'mainstream' organisation. Therefore the long-term development of social services and healthcare for immigrants remains inadequate. It appears that politicians, managers and civil servants prefer to focus on the positive aspect of projects to legitimate the organisations and to bring about change by targeting and steering activities. However, they tend to overlook the negative consequences of using projects, and there is a risk that a backlash will undermine the legitimacy of organisations. Citizens and participants in general, and immigrants in particular, experience frustration and distrust as a result of the short-term nature of project-based action. The problems that the projects were expected to address may remain, or even increase.

Syftet med studien är att undersöka frisörelevers uppfattningar om gesällbrevet. Det är ett yrkesbevis för frisörens kunskap och kompetens och det är det enda bevis med vilken branschen kan mäta elevers kunskap. På ett frisörprogram med trettio elever valde tre elever 2009 att ta sitt gesällbrev. Av dessa siffror att döma, ska jag med kvalitativa intervjuer undersöka 6 avgångselevers uppfattningar. En strävan är också att informera och väcka intresse om gesällen. Resultatet visar det som tidigare forskning gjort att det bl.a. beror på att eleverna inte har det praktiska kunnandet som man tidigare haft och att det är därför elever får svårigheter att komma ut på praktikplats och därefter ta sitt gesällbrev. Håller frisöryrket på att mista sin profession eller är det ”okey” att kalla sig professionell utan sin legitimation?, The purpose with this lucubration is to investigate hairstylist student’s apprehension about the apprentice diploma. The apprentice diploma is an occupation verification indicating on the hairstylist’s knowledge and competence, and it is the only verification in the business that you can use in order to measure the students knowledge. Three students out of thirty, in year 2009, chose to graduate with an apprentice diploma. Based on these figures I am to investigate six graduating students opinion using qualitative interviews. Another quest is to inform and gain interest about the apprentice diploma. The result demonstrate what earlier research already shows, amongst other things, that the students no longer have the practical knowledge needed in order to come to a worksite and therefore find it difficult to work as an apprentice. The business expects the students to be self-driven and dissatisfaction from the school and the business increases. Is the occupation as a hairstylist about to loose its profession or are you allowed to call yourself a professional without a proper diploma?

Background: The objective of this study was to assess different smoking patterns during and after pregnancy and relate these patterns to socioeconomic conditions and different health issues such as symptoms, drug consumption and health care use. Methods: The study group included 337 pregnant women from a district in south Sweden. A questionnaire was filled in during the first part of pregnancy and an interview was conducted after the baby was born. The women were categorised according to their smoking habits. Results: The categories defined were continuers, relapsers, decreasers, quitters and non-smokers. Among relapsers three symptoms, difficulty in relaxing (OR 4.48), restlessness (OR 9.59) and dysphoria (OR 3.98), were more common than among non-smokers. All three musculoskeletal symptoms were most common among continuers. Among quitters the OR for backache was 2.05, for numbness In the arms and legs 2.76 and for tearfulness 2.92. Educational level was relatively high among quitters and few had a smoking partner. Among smokers (decreasers, relapsers and continuers) 24% used drugs regularly, compared to 5% among non-smokers. Conclusions: To prevent smoking during pregnancy awareness of the relations between different smoking categories and symptoms could make it easier for hearth personnel to individualise support. A possible starting point is to discuss how to cope with different symptoms occurring during smoking cessation. Women with predictors for continued smoking during pregnancy, such as low education, unemployment, a smoking partner and multiparous, should be focused on more intensively and preventive strategies suitable for their special needs should be developed.
