Purpose of Review Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most frequent lymphoproliferative disease in the elderly of the western world. Immune defective responses and treatment can worsen the immune system’s competence of CLL patients. Consequently, they may present a higher incidence of recurrent severe infections, second malignancies, and reduced efficacy of vaccines. The outbreak of COVID-19 is an ongoing pandemic, and patients with comorbidities experience more severe forms of the disease. Hematological malignancies are associated with higher case fatality rates (CFRs) than other cancers. Knowledge about COVID-19 incidence, clinical course, and immune response to the infection and vaccination in CLL may contribute to design strategies that improve the outcomes of patients in the future. Recent Findings The prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 positivity in CLL is not significantly higher than seen in the general population. CFRs for CLL patients are 16.5-fold more elevated than the median reported worldwide and even higher in older patients, those who require hospitalization have significant comorbidities or need oxygen therapy. CLL status decreases the anti-SARS-CoV-2 positivity after infection or vaccination by around 40%, and the spike-specific antibody titers are 74-fold lower than healthy age-matched controls. The response rate to COVID-19 vaccines is even worse in patients with active CLL-directed therapies like BTKi, BCL-2 antagonists, or anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies. Summary CLL patients are at a greater risk of death from COVID-19. Inherent immunosuppression of CLL and immune deficiencies caused by treatment significantly decrease the ability to produce natural or vaccine-induced anti-SARS-CoV-2 immune responses.

The phylogenetic relationships of strains LUP21 and LUP23, which are isolated from nodules of Lupinus honoratus, are examined and the symbiotic genes that encode for nodulation and nitrogen fixation are detected and characterized. The studies including phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and molecular features of the strains isolated in this analysis showed that they belong to a new species of the genus Ochrobactrum, which is named as Ochtobactrum lupini sp. nov.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the influence of environmental conditions on the bacterial community composition in water, sediment and riparian soil during different water flow periods. For this purpose, samples of three habitats (water, sediment and riparian soil) were collected from five polluted sites and one reference site along the Suquía River during high and low water flow periods. The pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and water temperature were measured ?in situ?, with total organic carboncontent, nitrate and ammonia concentration being evaluated for all samples. In addition, pH, conductivity and total N were determined in the sediment and riparian soil samples, and the bacterial community composition of water, sediments and riparian soil samples was monitored using restriction fragment length polymorphism of the 16S rRNA gene. The results showed that the bacterial community composition of water was different from that of sediments or riparian soil. A redundancy analysis indicated that the changes in the bacterialcommunity composition in the Suquía River were primarily correlated with variations in dissolved oxygen, conductivity and pH. The water bacterial community composition was very variable among sites and water flow periods, while that of sediments differed according to the water flow period, which was associated with temperature variation. Lastly, in riparian soil, differences were found in the bacterial community composition of the sites located before and after Cordoba city.
Here are exposed arguments referring to the freedom of expression as the angular stone of a Democratic State ensuring its basis through the construction of a free and informed society. In this way, it has been stated that in the Interamerican System of Human Rights, the freedom of expression presents a double dimension, one as the right of the citizens to receive information, and the other as the right of people to express their ideas and opinions, in a way that creates the public opinion that a system of representative democracy needs for taking decisions. The media has an important role, as instruments of the materialization of the freedom of expression. Consequently, they must be protected by the state, and totally independent. In the same way, here are exposed the limitations to the right of freedom of expression, which are determined in international instruments and in jurisprudence of local and international documents. Which should also be found expressly written in the national legislation of each state so that there will not be any arbitrary use of power. Eventually, showing society information of public interest, whose protagonists could be susceptible to the scrutiny of society, instead of being considered an attempt against the rights of people, acting with real malice, or acting against the democratic system to violate the national interest, the moral, or public health, it will be instead considered a pure use of freedom of expression.

We tested if the microbial functional redundancy concept (theory relating changes in ecosystem functioning by species loss) apply for changes in the ammonium-oxidizing community (nitrifier bacteria) due to: a) grazing disturbance, b) seasonal variations (dry season vs. wet season), c) habitat type (soil vs. organic residues), and d) ecological conditions (two eco-regions), in an arid region of central-western of Argentina. We determined: a) abundance of culturable nitrifier bacteria, b) nitrification activity and efficiency, and c) nitrifier community genetic structure by PCR-DGGE (richness and similarity index). Grazing did not change the nitrifier abundance, activity and richness, while seasonally and eco-region effects were scarce. Contrarily, the habitat type affected nitrifier activity, which was higher in organic residues than in soil. All similarity indexes were low (average 0.50, range 0.76-0.18) which suggest high species diversity in these arid eco-regions. Our results indicate that the nitrification process in arid region of Argentina is redundant but it applies only for each habitat. To our knowledge, this is the first functional redundancy study on microbial ecological process in disturbed arid zones, in which we report an important species replacement but without modifications in microorganism abundance and activity.

We assessed if these vegetation characteristics affect the soil organic matter characteristics along a precipitation gradient (500-100mm) in four dry forest sites with similar grazing intensity of central-western of Argentina. The follow litter characteristics were analyzed: total and component biomass, fibers, phenols and labile compounds. These characteristics were related with soil data obtained in the same sites. The litter characteristics did not linearly respond to the precipitation gradient: total biomass was higher in 350mm-site while fiber concentration was lower in 500mm-site than the other sites. Contrarily, phenols and labile compounds did not show significant differences among sites. Correlations were detected only between total litter biomass and soil organic matter and its fractions. We concluded that the relationships between litter and soil organic matter characteristics are defined by an interaction between litter biomass and fiber/phenols ratio. Implication for cattle and logging management practices in dry forest are mentioned. Fil: Abril, Adriana. Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. Facultad de Ciencias Agropecuarias. The aim of this study was to assess the resilience degree of soil nitrification process (by nitrate content, nitrification rate, and nitrifier abundance measurements), in soils of central Argentina. Soil nitrification process from cultivated farmlands (no-tillage soybean/sorghum and soybean monoculture and plow tillage peanut/sorghum) was compared to those from under restoration and control sites (native woodland). Nitrate content increased in peanut and soybean monoculture fields. Nitrification rate was higher in the control site, although nitrifier abundance did not differ between all the analyzed sites. All productive sites lead to the loss of the resilience capacity of global nitrification process in the semi-arid central area of Argentina. We conclude that no-tillage and crop rotations have a poor interactive effect on resilience of nitrification process in the short term of the transition from plow tillage. Moreover, closure is not a suitable practice for restoring nitrification process in the short-term. Fil: Romero, Carlos. The aim of this paper is to present a ten-year experience (2002-2011) of the carrying out of two university extension lines, particularly as regards to their origin, difficulties and the impact produced on the different social actors to whom they are directed. Two university extension lines of the Cátedra de Microbiología Agrícola of the Facultad de Ciencias Agropecuarias of the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (Diffusion of the use of inoculants, and Improvement of water quality) were taken as case studies originating in service demands. The demands came from teaching activities, due to the social/family environment of the students (rural establishments and municipalities) and were related to vacancy areas (microbial quality of resources and inputs for agricultural use). During the ten years analyzed, the demands came not only from farmers, but also from inoculant production industries, industries involved in water and wastewater treatment, public institutions, mass-media and NGOs. The quantity and type of the required activities varied substantially among years, depending on the offers of private services and the economic conditions of the sectors involved. We present an analysis of: a) the criteria that should be considered in establishing performance standards: high efficiency, objectivity and impartiality and transparency in the management of the funds generated by services; b) the relationship with the applicant recipients: particularly entrepreneurs and mass-media; and c) the impact of the services on the academic unit and on the society. We conclude that extension lines originated by service demands have a strong impact on the society due to a permanently feedback with specific requirements. Therefore, they should have high operational flexibility to adapt to any social/productive changes of the actors involved. Fil: Abril, Adriana. Universidad Nacional de Cordoba. - Abstract
Background: Uric acid is a marker for kidney damage and has been shown as a maternal neonatal risk factor in the physiopathology of preeclampsia. Objective: To determine the diagnostic validity of hyperuricemia for the prognosis of preeclampsia in pregnant women attending the Pablo Jaramillo Crespo Foundation in Cuenca-Ecuador, during 2016. Materials and Methods: Validity study of diagnostic test. The sample consisted of 185 pregnant women, users of the Pablo Jaramillo Crespo Foundation. In all cases, the uric acid value was determined using a COBAS C 111 analyzer and it was compared with the diagnosis of preeclampsia based on international recommendations. The data was analyzed on SPSS v. 15. Descriptive statistics, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and positive and negative probability coefficients were calculated for each cut-off point for the uric acid. Results: The mean in relation to age was 28.2 years old; 19 pregnant women had preeclampsia (10.3%). The mean value for uric was 4.16mg/dl. The best diagnostic efficiency corresponds to a uric said score > 5 (IJ: 0.88), with a sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 88%, PPV of 48.7%, NPV of 100%, LR+ of 8.3 and LR- of 0.0. Conclusion: Uric acid is valid for the diagnosis of preeclampsia, a value of 5mg/dl or more has the best diagnostic efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The microbial populations of saline environments are physiologically adapted to extreme conditions of salinity and oxygen shortage, and are major responsibles of chemical element returns to the atmosphere in salt water ecosystems. The Mar Chiquita lake, an extensive saline lake of the province of Córdoba, Argentina (Provincial Reserve and Ramsar Site), has been scarcely explored, particularly in its microbiological aspects. Here we present a first approach to the knowledge of its microbial communities and other environmental parameters. We collected water and sediment samples from the coast and open waters of different depth, and evaluated chemical and physical parameters and abundance of microbial metabolic groups involved in the degradation of organic compounds and nutrient release. The results showed an abundant bacterial community constituted by heterotrophic microorganisms with aerobic respiration and fermentation, and by amonifiers, nitrate-reducers, nitrogen fixers, hydrogen sulphide-oxidisers, sulfate-reducers, and iron-oxidisers. The ammonium-oxidisers were less abundant. The abundance of different metabolic groups responded to factors associated with oxygen availability and both allochthonous and autochthonous organic carbon availability. Similarly to other saline lakes of the world, our results suggest that in this lake: (1) sulfate reduction would be the most important metabolism, (2) the presence of aerobic organisms in high salinity environments would respond to the interaction with oxygenic phototrophic organisms (cianobacteria); and (3) nitrogen metabolism is very conservative due to the high abundance of fixers and the scarcity of nitrate-reducer microorganisms.

Although there is abundant information on decomposition processes and litter quality in deserts, little is known about the integrated effect of both factors on soil fertility. We evaluated, in the Monte desert (Mendoza, Argentina), during one year: a) the chemical and biological quality of litter of two woody species (Prosopis flexuosa and Larrea divaricata) collected after two litter fall events (summer and autumn), b) the decomposition dynamics (weight loss and chemical compound variations) in cages of 1 cm mesh, and c) the changes in fertility of the underlying soil (beneath the cage). Litter quality differed between falling dates (summer: more cellulose, phenols and soluble N; autumn: more soluble C) and between species (P. flexuosa: more fiber, total and soluble N and less phenols), while decomposition dynamics was similar between species. In contrast, litter quality (specifically, soluble compound contents) seems to affect the magnitude of changes in the underlying soil fertility. The important decrease in soil microorganisms under L. divaricata is probably due to the high soil exposure to summer insolation. It is concluded that, during the first year, the decomposition process is weakly regulated by litter quality and that the variations detected responded mainly to the Monte climatic conditions. The efficiency of a treatment for industrial effluents based on a combination of habitat and microbial population management was tested in a metallurgic plant in Córdoba, Argentina. Effluents (between 30 - 40 m3 day) were originated from a) zinc process (20%), b) engine washing (70%), and c) sewage (10%). The treatment process included a combination of three managed habitats: aquatic (pond), wetland (flooding plots), and agricultural land (flooding and crop plots). The three habitats were managed to optimize the degrading activity of water, soil, and phyllosphere microorganisms. Management practices included introduction of terrestrial and aquatic vegetation, water aeration, sediment removal, and inoculation of selected native microorganisms. Efficiency was assessed through five years using the following parameters: a) monthly: water pH and abundance of degrading and coliform bacteria in the pond b) yearly: Zn, Cr and mineral oil content in the underground water (9 m deep), sediments in the ponds and organic matter in the subsoil (1 and 2 m deep). Water pH was permanently high (8.4 -10.9), whereas abundance of degrading microorganisms was very low at the beginning (log 1.2/ ml) increasing through the following years and with fluctuations of between log 3.6 and 8.9/ ml. No increase in bacterial abundance was detected after inoculation. Coliform bacteria were scarcely observed. High concentration of Zn (6.48 – 7.08 mg/kg) and Cr (0.19 – 0.50 mg/kg) and low mineral oil content (0.23 – 1.01 mg/kg) were detected in the pond’s sediments. None of these components were detected in underground water and subsoil. Habitat management allowed an efficient degradation of sewage and mineral oils. The system does not produce waste material such as sludge, water, nor underground water pollution.

Soil microbial parameters as land-use indicators were evaluated in the semi-arid central region of Argentina. Contrasting land-use situations were compared in Chaco woodlands and Espinal agro-ecosystems: high impact (positive and negative), medium impact, low impact, and restoration. The sensibility of chemical (organic matter, pH, and nitrate) and biological (soil respiration and abundance of microbial functional groups) parameters was evaluated by estimating the percent variation between disturbed and undisturbed soils in each land-use situation. Moreover, microbial community structure (relation among functional groups) and carbon mineralization rate (respiration/organic matter) were calculated. Biological parameters were more sensitive than the chemical ones. Nitrifiers (variation range: –55% to +23%), cellulolitics (-50% to +49%), and soil respiration (–60% to +21%) were the most sensitive parameters. The changes on microbial community and carbon mineralization rate were good indicators, particularly in medium impact and restoration situations. Some biological parameters may have an important role as indicators for sustainable land-use ecosystems due to their high sensibility and easiness to measure.

- Abstract
A study was carried out to evaluate the effect of fire on the some chemical properties and the soil microorganisms at the Chancaní Forest Reserve of Córdoba Province. The sites were a native forest and a grassland with burned and unburned patches. Soil samples were taken immediately after fire and after periods of 30, 180, 360, and 720 days. The following chemical and biological parameters were evaluated: pH, total nitrogen, N-NO3, organic matter, soil respiration and soil microorganisms density. As a result of fire, significant losses in soil organic matter content and decreased pH values were observed, together with an increase in nitrogen and N-NO3, Soil respiration and microorganisms were strongly affected with exception of those with resistance forms. The conditions observed were stable over the two years of study, nevertheless, there was a tendency to recover the original values.
