Abstract

Next-generation cellular technologies, commonly referred to as the 6G, are envisioned to support a higher system capacity, better performance, and network sensing capabilities. The THz band is one potential enabler to this end due to the large unused frequency bands and the high spatial resolution enabled by the short signal wavelength and large bandwidth. Different from earlier surveys, this paper presents a comprehensive treatment and technology survey on THz communications and sensing in terms of advantages, applications, propagation characterization, channel modeling, measurement campaigns, antennas, transceiver devices, beamforming, networking, the integration of communications and sensing, and experimental testbeds. Starting from the motivation and use cases, we survey the development and historical perspective of THz communications and sensing with the anticipated 6G requirements. We explore the radio propagation, channel modeling, and measurement for the THz band. The transceiver requirements, architectures, technological challenges, and state-of-the-art approaches to compensate for the high propagation losses, including appropriate antenna design and beamforming solutions. We overview several related technologies that either are required by or are beneficial for THz systems and networks. The synergistic design of sensing and communications is explored in depth. Practical trials, demonstrations, and experiments are also summarized. Abstract

The 6G standard aims to be an integral part of the future economy by providing high-performance communication and sensing services. At terahertz (THz) frequencies, indoor campus networks can offer the highest sensing quality. Health monitoring in hospitals is expected to be an application site for these. This work outlines a monostatic phase-based system for breathing rate monitoring. Our feasibility study observes motion measurement accuracy down to the micrometer level. However, we also find that the patient's pose needs to be considered for generalized applicability. Thus, a solution that leverages multiple propagation paths and beam orientations is proposed., Comment: 5 pages, 10 figures. 14. Off-label uses of the Amplatzer Piccolo Occluder in children with congenital and acquired heart diseases.

Abstract

Aim: The Amplatzer Piccolo Occluder (APO) is approved for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) occlusion in infants weighing >700 g but could offer versatility to treat other lesions. Methods: Retrospective review of children in whom APO was utilized for defects other than PDA between January 2022 and June 2023. Results: The APO was used in nine patients; three for ventricular septal defects, four with coronary fistulas, one for a ventricular pseudoaneurysm and one where APO deployed within a fenestration of a previously placed Amplatzer Septal Occluder. All nine patients had successful occlusions without complications. Conclusion: The APO is a versatile device that can be used to treat various small diameter lesions in children besides the PDA for which it is currently approved for. Article highlights The Amplatzer Piccolo Occluder (APO) is currently used for closure of patent ductus arteriosus in infants and children. Its utility to treat other small lesions in children has not been previously described. In this series, the APO was used to treat small lesions such as coronary artery fistulas, residual ventricular septal defects, etc. All lesions were successfully treated using the APO, and there were no procedural complications. The APO can be used to successfully occlude small defects of many varieties in infants and children. The advantage of delivering a disc device through a relatively small catheter may prove valuable while treating certain vascular lesions in infants and small children. The 4-French delivery system allows this device to be used in small patients that cannot tolerate the large delivery systems of other devices. Abstract

The next-generation wireless technologies, commonly referred to as the sixth generation (6G), are envisioned to support extreme communications capacity and in particular disruption in the network sensing capabilities. The terahertz (THz) band is one potential enabler for those due to the enormous unused frequency bands and the high spatial resolution enabled by both short wavelengths and bandwidths. Different from earlier surveys, this paper presents a comprehensive treatment and technology survey on THz communications and sensing in terms of the advantages, applications, propagation characterization, channel modeling, measurement campaigns, antennas, transceiver devices, beamforming, networking, the integration of communications and sensing, and experimental testbeds. Starting from the motivation and use cases, we survey the development and historical perspective of THz communications and sensing with the anticipated 6G requirements. We explore the radio propagation, channel modeling, and measurements for THz band. The transceiver requirements, architectures, technological challenges, and approaches together with means to compensate for the high propagation losses by appropriate antenna and beamforming solutions. We survey also several system technologies required by or beneficial for THz systems. The synergistic design of sensing and communications is explored with depth. Practical trials, demonstrations, and experiments are also summarized. The paper gives a holistic view of the current state of the art and highlights the issues and challenges that are open for further research towards 6G., 55 pages, 10 figures, 8 tables, submitted to IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials

49. Hybrid Delay-Phase Precoding in Wideband UM-MIMO Systems Under True Time Delay and Phase Shifter Hardware Limitations

Abstract

The exploitation of the substantial bandwidths available in the terahertz (THz) band has recently attracted considerable interest. However, beam squint effect is a significant obstacle in the design of wideband hybrid beamformers. The beam squint effect causes the radiation beam to deviate from the desired direction, resulting in substantial gain losses and hindering the effective utilization of available bandwidths. Delay-phase precoding (DPP), a combination of true time delay (TTD) elements and phase shifters (PSs) in the analog domain, has emerged as a potential solution to overcome the beam squint effect and maintain practical system design. However, existing hybrid precoding schemes that assume infinite resolution and unbounded range TTDs, as well as infinite resolution PSs, impose a significant burden in terms of hardware complexity and power consumption. In this paper, we introduce the Delta-Delay-Phase Precoding (DDPP) architecture, which significantly reduces the required delay range of TTDs, outperforming existing state-of-the-art solutions in the literature. Importantly, the proposed architecture maintains consistently superior performance, even as the number of antenna elements increases, making it scalable for UM-MIMO systems. Additionally, we propose hardware-aware designs for the hybrid analog precoder to combat beam squint effect while complying with the hardware limitations of TTDs and PSs. We formulate the design of TTDs and PSs as a joint optimization problem subject to their finite-resolution constraints. To tackle this non-convex optimization problem, we propose an iterative precoding algorithm based on alternating minimization. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed hybrid analog precoding schemes over recent literature works. Particularly, the proposed precoding schemes achieve near-optimal performance despite the hardware limitations of TTDs and PSs.
