Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) significantly impacts patients' sexual functioning and quality of life. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are essential for accurately assessing these issues, yet a comprehensive evaluation of their psychometric properties in PCa patients is lacking., Aims: This systematic review aimed to provide a comprehensive evaluation of all generic and specific PROMs used to assess sexual functioning in PCa patients and make recommendations the application of PROMs in this patient group., Methods: Six electronic databases were searched from up to May 5, 2024. Studies reporting the development and/or validation of PROMs for PCa patients or generic instruments administered to this population were included. The COSMIN risk of bias checklist was adopted to assess the methodological quality and psychometric properties of included PROMs. Psychometric properties of the PROM in each included study were rated against the criteria for good measurement properties based on the COSMIN guideline., Outcomes: The main outcome was to identify the appropriate PROM that can be adopted and used for assessing sexual functioning in PCa patients in clinical setting., Results: A total of 10 PROMs were identified across 32 studies, primarily focusing on localized PCa patients after radical prostatectomy. The Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC-26) was the most frequently evaluated and widely used PROM in clinical practice. EPIC-26 (Spanish, Italian, Chinese versions) and UCLA Prostate Cancer Index (UCLA-PCI) demonstrated better psychometric properties compared to other scales. However, no PROM met all COSMIN standards., Clinical Implications: In a clinical setting, it is crucial to utilize well-validated PROMs with good psychometric properties to effectively identify patients with PCa experiencing sexual difficulties who may require additional support., Strengths and Limitations: We applied strict inclusion criteria related to study design and study population, ensuring the assumption of transitivity and the consistency of the analysis., Conclusion: Although EPIC-26 is a shortened version with strong psychometric properties, it may still be too lengthy for patients with significant health issues. Furthermore, the included PROMs do not address issues related to partner relationships, or the psychological impact of sexual dysfunction in sufficient detail. Future research should aim to develop and validate new PROMs that fill these gaps. Introduction: Clinical decision support system (CDSS) is an application used to aid decision-making and provide knowledge regarding treatment, diagnosis, and laboratory testing. Despite the associated benefits, the underutilization of CDSS is causing a global challenge. In Palestine, CDSS remains unimplemented, prompting a study on knowledge levels and factors influencing CDSS acceptance among physicians., Objective: The study aimed to assess physicians' knowledge of CDSS and understand factors impacting CDSS adoption, including performance expectancy (PE), effort expectancy (EE), computer self-efficacy, involvement in decision-making, perceived threat to autonomy, and social influence., Methods: A validated questionnaire-based survey consisting of seven constructs was used in this study. The constructs were derived from the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT). The target population was 363 resident physicians and general practitioners (GPs) from three governmental hospitals. In total, 124 participants were enrolled, and data was collected between June 1 and June 30, 2022. Generalized linear regression was used for data analysis., Results: Most participants were males (75%), with an average of 2.9 years of experience. Despite limited CDSS knowledge, participants strongly intended to adopt it (mean = 3.91, SD = 0.65). Our results showed a significant effect of PE (p = 0.000, r = 0.469), EE (p = 0.001, r = 0.294), computer self-efficacy level (p = 0.015, r = 0.218), perceived threat to professional autonomy (p = 0.001, r = -0.302), and social influence (p = 0.047, r = 0.179) on the intention to adopt CDSS. However, involvement in decision-making about CDSS had no significant impact (p = 0.123, r = 0.140)., Conclusion: This study provides the basis for implementing CDSS in Palestinian settings. Objectives: This study aimed to identify the level of spirituality, faith and meaning, and quality of life (QOL) among Muslim advanced cancer patients undergoing active treatment and to enhance the understanding of the relationships among clinical and socio-demographic factors, spirituality, and QOL of patients in the Gaza Strip., Methods: A secondary analysis was conducted on a convenience sample of 298 advanced cancer patients. The Arabic versions of the Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-Being (FACIT-Sp) and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G) were used for data collection. Descriptive statistics and generalized linear regression were utilized for data analysis, performed using SPSS 25.0., Results: Participants reported high spirituality well-being scores (Mean = 31.25, SD = 6.25) and relatively high scores on the subscales of meaning/peace (Mean = 19.15, SD = 4.11) and faith (Mean = 12.03, SD = 3.50). Most patients indicated that their faith and spiritual beliefs increased due to their illness. Furthermore, a significant positive relationship was found between spirituality (including its subscales of faith and meaning in life) and QOL. Despite the generally high level of spirituality, special attention should be paid to patients with lung, bladder, and thyroid cancer, lower education levels, and higher cancer grades., Conclusions: The Gazan Muslim patients with advanced cancer exhibit high levels of spirituality and faith. We acknowledged that spiritual well-being is a protective factor for QOL. The strong positive correlation between spirituality and QOL emphasizes the need to integrate spiritual care into cancer care., Implications for Nursing Practice: It is imperative to incorporate spirituality into health practice and the daily routines of cancer treatment for patients whose spirituality is an important aspect of their identities. Purpose: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the three most prevalent cancers globally, with incidence rates projected to increase. CRC survivors face various challenges due to the disease and its treatments. However, there is limited evidence on the experiences and needs of CRC survivors in resource-constrained countries. This study aimed to explore the experiences and needs of CRC survivors in Syria and to identify perceived opportunities for improvement., Methods: A descriptive qualitative study design was employed, using semi-structured in-depth interviews with 12 adult CRC survivors who had completed treatment at least 6 months prior, selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis approach., Results: The interviews revealed 15 major themes: 11 concerning the experiences of CRC survivors and four related to their needs. The survivors' experiences included physical burden, psychological expressions, economic burden, social withdrawal, stigmatization, family and friend supports, cultural and social impact, religion and coping mechanisms, relationship with healthcare professionals, support from healthcare system. Their needs encompassed emotional and psychological, informational, financial, and sexual needs., Conclusion: This study highlights the unpredictable psychological, economic and physical burdens experienced by Syrian CRC survivors. Personalized care plans that address unmet needs of survivors are crucial to improving their quality of life. Prioritizing the development of comprehensive survivorship care plans that address the multifaceted needs of CRC survivors is crucial. Background: eHealth was widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic. Much attention was given to the technical aspects of eHealth, such as infrastructure and cost, while the soft skill of compassion remained underexplored. The wide belief in compassionate care is more compatible with in-person interactions but difficult to deliver via e-platforms where personal and environmental clues were lacking urges studying this topic., Purpose: to explore the experience of delivering compassionate care via an eHealth platform among healthcare professionals working to contain the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: A qualitative study design with an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach was used. Twenty healthcare professionals (fifteen nurses and five physicians) who provided care using technology platforms, such as telephone hotlines, mobile apps, and social media, were interviewed individually., Ethical Considerations: Permission to conduct the study was obtained from the Institutional Review Board., Results: Participants stated that "eHealth enabled compassionate care during the pandemic" by ensuring patient care availability and accessibility. They shared experiences of "communicating compassionate care via eHealth" with suggestions of addressing patients' needs with empathy, adopting a structured protocol to guide eHealth communication, and using more advanced visual-media methods to promote human-to-human interaction. They recommended "setting realistic mutual expectations" considering the limitations of eHealth in handling complex health situations and staffing shortages. Participants considered "low eHealth literacy hinders compassion." Additionally, they recommended the need for "institutional/system-level support to foster compassionate care.", Conclusion: Participants recognized the importance of integrating compassion into eHealth services. Promotion of compassionate care requires standardization of eHealth services with institutional and system-level support. Background: Research led by nurses has evolved rapidly over the last 2 decades globally. Assessing the work that has been conducted so far can help the specialty to strategically shape future directions of nurse-led cancer research., Objective: The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date synthesis of all nurse-led cancer research published articles over 20 years., Methods: A bibliometric analysis was used. Three databases were used to retrieve nurse-led cancer research publications for the period from January 1, 2004, to March 11, 2022., Results: A total of 7043 original articles were retrieved. A significant increase in nurse-led cancer research over the past 2 decades was evident. The United States and United Kingdom were the most productive countries in terms of the number of published articles. Minimal international collaboration was observed among low- or middle-income countries versus high-income countries. Breast cancer, palliative care, and quality of life received the most attention in nurse-led cancer research, followed by education, pain, and communication. Background: Despite emerging evidence on the effectiveness of eHealth interventions in improving cardiovascular health, little is known about the perception of use and efficacy of these interventions and real-world application., Objective: We sought to develop an in-depth understanding of the perceptions of eHealth interventions in improving cardiovascular health., Methods: This is a systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies. A comprehensive search of multiple databases and a manual search of the references list were conducted. Meta-synthesis of qualitative data was performed to review and interpret the findings. The study report followed the ENTREQ checklist., Results: Four themes emerged regarding perceptions of eHealth interventions: preferred eHealth intervention design features, enabling healthcare professionals' support, eHealth engagement for health benefits, and barriers to eHealth engagement. Intervention design features should integrate motivational elements, use an eHealth literacy lens, and enhance cultural relevance. Healthcare professionals appreciated these new working methods but voiced concern about competency building. Real-world usage initiation was driven by perceived needs and usefulness, whereas persistent engagement was inspired by intrinsic motivation in participants., Conclusions: eHealth interventions were appreciated as a valuable opportunity for providing alternative/supplementary cardiac care for health optimization. Participants commented on the need for more explicit and accurate health information presentation, and they appreciated the motivational elements in empowering them with self-determination over daily self-care behaviors. Background: Caring for patients with advanced cancer is complex and challenging, requiring varied expertise, including symptom management, communication skills, care coordination and emotional resilience. Within existing literature, the lived experiences of oncology nurses are poorly articulated in countries with a lower income where formal palliative care (PC) is absent., Aim: To explore the lived experiences of Gazan oncology nurses who provide care to patients with advanced cancer in healthcare systems, without formal palliative care infrastructure., Methods: A phenomenological approach was adopted. Semi-structured interviews were conducted between January and April 2022, in the Turkish Palestinian Friendship Hospital. Thematic analysis used the themes (corporeality, relationality, spatiality and temporality) to facilitate reflection on the meaning of participants' lived experiences., Results: Interviews were undertaken with 16 oncology nurses. The experience of the 'erosion of nurses' work when coping with anxious attachments to patients and families' was the overarching theme in nurses' views, characterised by five sub-themes: (1) inadequacy of PC training and resources, (2) serving humanity, (3) pride in their profession, (4) existential distress and the coping strategies used by nurses, and (5) reported stress and anxiety when caring for seriously ill patients and their families., Conclusions: The study sheds light on the challenges and powerful emotions experienced by oncology nurses who care for patients with advanced cancer, yet lack the necessary PC training and institutional resources. The findings indicate an urgent need for PC training for nurses within the Gazan healthcare system and other lower-income settings. Assessing nurses' emotions and relationships with patients and family caregivers is imperative to enable optimum care for patients with cancer and to foster resilience among their nurses.

Objectives: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of creative arts therapy (CAT) interventions on the health outcomes of adult patients with cancer., Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted in six databases from their inception to June 10, 2023, with no restrictions on sex, age, cancer type, cancer stage, or treatment type. The Cochrane Risk of Bias (RoB2) tool for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and the equivalent tool for non-RCTs (ROBINS-I) were used to assess the risk of bias. Meta-analyses were conducted to pool estimates of the effects of CAT on patients' health-related outcomes. A narrative synthesis of outcomes was performed where meta-analysis was not appropriate., Results: A total of 25 studies (8 RCTs and 17 quasi-RCTs) involving 1489 cancer patients and survivors were included in the final data analysis. Most studies focused on patients with mixed cancer diagnoses who were undergoing active chemotherapy treatment. Most studies utilized painting, drawing, and/or sculpting as CAT interventions. The overall risk of bias in the included studies was moderate to high. Meta-analysis demonstrated a significant improvement in quality of life (SMD with 95% CI = 17.50, 10.05-24.95, P =.0000) and the social aspect of quality of life in cancer patients (SMD with 95% CI = 03.1 (0.06-0.55), P = .01), but no significant effects were found for depressive symptoms and coping strategies among patients who participated in CAT compared to control groups. Narrative analysis and non-RCTs suggested the potential of CAT in reducing levels of depression and anxiety, as well as improving self-image, hope, emotional expression/state, and processing in patients with cancer. However, inconsistent findings were reported regarding the effectiveness of CAT interventions on fatigue, spirituality, and psychosomatic distress/symptom intensity., Conclusion: The findings indicated significant and potential benefits of CAT for individuals with cancer, primarily related to quality of life. However, caution is needed in interpreting these findings due to limitations in the methodologies utilized in the included studies. Purpose: Exercise-based cancer rehabilitation via digital technologies can provide a promising alternative to centre-based exercise training, but data for cancer patients and survivors are limited. We conducted a meta-analysis examining the effect of telehealth exercise-based cancer rehabilitation in cancer survivors on cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity, muscle strength, health-related quality of life, and self-reported symptoms., Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, and reference lists of articles related to the aim were searched up to March 2023. Randomized controlled clinical trials were included comparing the effect of telehealth exercise-based cancer rehabilitation with guideline-based usual care in adult cancer survivors. The primary result was cardiorespiratory fitness expressed by peak oxygen consumption., Results: A total of 1510 participants were identified, and ten randomized controlled trials (n = 855) were included in the meta-analysis. The study sample was 85% female, and the mean age was 52.7 years. Meta-analysis indicated that telehealth exercise-based cancer rehabilitation significantly improved cardiorespiratory fitness (SMD = 0.34, 95% CI 0.20, 0.49, I2 = 42%, p < 0.001) and physical activity (SMD = 0.34, 95% CI, 0.17, 0.51, I2 = 71%, p < 0.001). It was uncertain whether telehealth exercise-based cancer rehabilitation, compared with guideline-based usual care, improved the quality of life (SMD = 0.23, 95%CI, -0.07, 0.52, I2 = 67%, p = 0.14) body mass index (MD = 0.46, 95% CI, -1.19, 2.12, I2 = 60%, p = 0.58) and muscle strength (SMD = 0.07, 95% CI, -0.14, 0.28, I2 = 37%, p = 0.51)., Conclusion: This meta-analysis showed that telehealth exercise cancer rehabilitation could significantly increase cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity levels and decrease fatigue. It is uncertain whether these interventions improve quality of life and muscle strength. High-quality and robust studies are needed to investigate specific home-based exercise regimens in different cancer subgroups to increase the certainty of the evidence., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

Background: Active participation of cancer patients and their caregivers in decision-making, along with high-quality communication, is crucial in patient-centered cancer management. Although numerous factors affecting patients' communication and decision-making involvement have been identified, it is still unclear which ones are the most prevalent and critical., Objective: To identify factors that contribute to high-quality patient-centered communication and decision-making participation from the perspectives of cancer patients, informal caregivers, and/or healthcare professionals., Methods: A systematic review was conducted, using 9 databases to retrieve primary research articles published from 2010 to February 17, 2023, updated on December 13, 2023. Methodological quality was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (version 18). The socioecological model of communication was utilized as analytical framework for summarizing the results., Results: Fifty-two studies were included. The most frequently reported factors were predominantly articulated at the individual, interpersonal, and societal levels. Although the patients' lack of knowledge and limited language proficiency were the frequent patient-level barriers, the perceived lack of knowledge and lack of training of professionals were the crucial and current professional-level barriers, as reported in studies published in 2016 onward. To circumvent these factors, it is critical to enhance professionals' knowledge, communication skills, and patient relationships., Conclusions: Recognizing barriers and facilitators could help in the development of strategies to overcome these barriers and enhance patient participation in clinical communication., Implication for Practice: The findings could guide the development of programs to enhance patient-professional communication skills. Objectives: This review examined the effectiveness of using dance movement therapy (DMT) and dance movement interventions (DMIs) with cancer and palliative care patients., Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Six databases were searched from inception to July 9, 2022, without limits on year or age. Searching was updated on July 10, 2023. The risk of bias was assessed by the Cochrane (RoB 2) and ROBINS-I tools. Meta-analyses were conducted to pool estimates of the effects of DMT and DMI on patients' health-related outcomes. A narrative synthesis of outcomes was performed where meta-analysis was not appropriate., Results: Among a total of 16 studies included in this review, nine were randomized controlled trials and seven were non-randomized trials, with a total of 893 participants. Only six of these studies were fully or partially described as true DMTs (some with less clarity than others), whereas the majority (n = 10) were DMIs with unclear therapeutic alignment. Most studies focused on female patients with breast cancer. Cancer patients undergoing palliative care received little attention. The overall risk of bias from the evaluated studies was high. Meta-analysis of two trials revealed that DMTs had no effect on QOL in cancer patients (SMD - 0.09, 95% CI - 0.21-0.40, P = 0.54), while narrative analysis and non-randomized trials showed no overall effect of DMTs on anxiety, depression, body image, self-esteem, or sleep disturbance but significant positive effects on perceived stress, pain severity, and pain interference. DMIs had significant positive effects on cancer patients' depression (SMD - 0.53, 95% CI - 0.93 to - 0.14, P = 0.008) and fatigue (SMD - 0.42, 95% CI - 0.70 to - 0.14, P = 0.003). DMI trials synthesized narratively showed an effect on patients' body image, self-esteem, physical function, right and left handgrip strength, life satisfaction, and the mental component of QOL., Conclusion: Both DMT and DMIs had promising effects on several health outcomes, but results were inconsistent, and the evidence was weak. The reviewed studies' low evidence quality and small sample sizes affected the findings' robustness and reliability. Large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials with sufficient sample sizes, and clear and veracious DMT and DMI protocols and data are required to provide more credible research evidence and influence practice., (© 2024. Background: There was a substantial documented call for healthcare professionals to provide compassionate care during the COVID-19 pandemic and significant criticism voiced when it was lacking. This study aimed to explore perspectives on compassionate care among healthcare professionals providing care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study focuses on healthcare professionals who participated in a wide range of COVID-19 measures, including testing, quarantine, diagnosis, and care provision (patients with COVID-19 or patients with other illnesses and comorbid with COVID-19)., Methods: A qualitative design with an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach was used. Twenty frontline healthcare professionals (15 nurses and five physicians) who had worked in COVID-19 facilities in China were interviewed individually., Results: Participants stated that a commitment to 'offering oneself' and 'balancing the advantages/disadvantages' in providing care during the pandemic were key to alleviate population-level suffering. On a personal level, they described a desire for obtaining 'mutual support' and improving 'professional competencies' to safeguard their physical and mental well-being. Two professional competencies were notable: coping with grief and implementing infection control across the organization. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of receiving support from the health care organization, the public, and leaders in creating an 'environment conducive to fostering compassionate care.', Conclusion: Healthcare professionals recognized the centrality of compassionate care during the pandemic which entailed a commitment to offering themselves, the balancing of advantages and disadvantages in order to find the best solution, as well as the need to safeguard themselves using professional competencies. Such findings can enrich the contemporary understanding of compassion, including when it is lacking. Background: Phenomenography emerged from pedagogy to examine the qualitatively different ways that individuals experience and perceive the same phenomenon. Despite its uniqueness, the uptake of phenomenography in nursing research is still limited. Potentially, this may be related to confusion regarding what the design is about, its philosophical underpinnings and how distinct it is from other qualitative designs., Objectives: To offer a better understanding of phenomenography by comparing it with other established qualitative research designs, examining its theoretical foundations, highlighting some studies that have employed the approach in nursing and offering methodological guidance to improve its uptake in nursing., Design: Discussion paper., Findings: Compared to the traditional qualitative designs employed in nursing, phenomenography has been utilized in fewer studies. The ontological, epistemological and methodological basis of phenomenography highlights it as a distinct design. The strength of phenomenography lies in its emphasis on understanding the collective variations between participants and presenting these holistically as an 'outcome space'., Discussion: Phenomenography is a distinct qualitative research approach that presents a unique opportunity for nursing to further its use. Background: Limited empirical evidence is available regarding the effect of technology-assisted cardiac rehabilitation (TACR) among coronary heart disease (CHD) patients with central obesity., Aim: To determine the effects of 12-week TACR on health outcomes of patients with CHD., Design: Two-arm randomized controlled trial., Setting: Cardiovascular department of a regional hospital., Population: Coronary heart disease patients with central obesity., Methods: The study randomized 78 hospitalized CHD patients to receive either the 12-week TACR intervention or usual care. Guided by social cognitive theory, the intervention began with an in-person assessment and orientation session to assess and identify individual risks and familiarize with the e-platform/device before discharge. After discharge, patients were encouraged to visit the interactive CR website for knowledge and skills acquisition, data uploading, use the pedometer for daily step tracking, and interact with peers and professionals via social media for problem-solving and mutual support. Data were collected at baseline (T0), six-week (T1), and 12-week (T2)., Results: Participants in the intervention group showed significant improvement in daily steps at six weeks but not 12 weeks (T1: β=2713.48, P=0.03; T2:β=2450.70, P=0.08), weekly sitting minutes (T1: β=-665.17, P=0.002; T2: β=-722.29, P=0.02), and total (vigorous, moderate, and walking) exercise at 12-week (β=-2445.99, P=0.008). Improvement in health-promoting lifestyle profile (T1: β=24.9, P<0.001; T2: β=15.50, P<0.001), smoking cessation (T2: β=-2.28, P<0.04), self-efficacy (T2: β=0.63, P=0.02), body mass index (T1:β =-0.97, P=0.03; T2: β=-0.73, P=0.04) and waist circumferences (T1: β =-1.97, P=0.003; T2: β =-3.14, P=0.002) were identified., Conclusions: Results indicated the effectiveness of the TACR intervention in improving healthy behaviors and anthropometric parameters for CHD patients with central obesity. This study conducted pairwise and network meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of three mind-body exercise interventions (Tai Chi, Qigong, and yoga) on physical capacity, psychological well-being, and quality of life in stroke patients. The research encompassed 30 studies involving 2107 participants and utilized the Risk of Bias 2.0 tool for quality assessment. Pairwise analysis revealed that all three mind-body exercises significantly enhanced patients' quality of life. Tai Chi demonstrated the most comprehensive improvements in balance, limb motor function, activities of daily living, and depression. Network meta-analysis indicated that Qigong was the most effective in improving balance and quality of life for post-stroke patients, followed by Tai Chi. These findings underscore the positive impact of mind-body exercises on both physical and psychosocial outcomes in stroke patients. Objectives: This review aimed to synthesize the available evidence on the effectiveness of expressive writing (EW) on health outcomes of patients with cancer., Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Six databases were searched from 1986 to 9 July 2022. The searches were updated on 3 October 2023. Methodological quality was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and ROBINS-I tool for non-RCTs Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Narrative synthesis of outcomes was performed where meta-analysis was not appropriate., Results: Thirty-four studies with 4316 participants were identified, including 31 RCTs and three non-RCTs. Twenty-one studies focused on women with breast cancer; the remainder recruited people with various cancer types. There was a significant improvement in fatigue (SMD =  - 0.3, 95% CI - 0.55 to - 0.66, P = .002), passive mood (MD =  - 3.26, 95% CI =  - 5.83 to - 0.69, P = 0.001), and the physical dimension of quality of life (MD = 3.21, 95% CI 0.18 to 6.25, P = 0.04) but not for anxiety, depression, and global quality of life among patients who participated in EW when compared with control groups., Conclusion: Findings showed some benefits of EW for people with cancer, but not necessarily in anxiety or depression. Background: Older Chinese immigrants constitute the largest older Asian ethnic population in New Zealand. Aging in a foreign land can be complex, presenting increasing challenges for gerontology scholars, practitioners, and policy makers. Older Chinese immigrants are more susceptible to experiencing loneliness and social isolation compared to native older people, primarily due to language, transportation, and cultural barriers. These factors subsequently impact their physical and mental health. With advancements in robotic technology, aged care robots are being applied to support older people with their daily living needs. However, studies on using robots with older immigrants living in the community are sparse. Their preferences for the appearance and function of aged care robots are unclear, which impacts the acceptance and usability of robots, highlighting the need for a user-centered design approach., Objective: This study aims to explore older Chinese immigrants' needs and preferences toward the appearance and function of aged care robots and to examine their relationships with the demographic characteristics of participants., Methods: A cross-sectional design was used in this study, which was undertaken between March and May 2020. A total of 103 participants completed a web-based survey., Results: The average age of participants was 68.7 (SD 5.5) years. The results suggest that 41.7% (n=43) of the 103 participants preferred a humanlike adult appearance, while 32% (n=33) suggested an animallike appearance. These participants reported higher scores in both rigorousness and friendliness compared to others who preferred different robot appearances. Participants expressed a greater preference for the functions of housework assistance (n=86, 83.5%), language translation (n=79, 76.7%), health monitoring (n=78, 75.7%), facial expressions (n=77, 74.8%), news reading (n=66, 64.1%), and security monitoring (n=65, 63.1%). These preferences were found to be significantly associated with marital status, financial status, and duration of immigration., Conclusions: To support immigrant populations to age well in a foreign country and address the growing shortage of health and social professionals, it is important to develop reliable robotic technology services that are tailored based on the needs and preferences of individuals. We collected and compared the perspectives of immigrant and nonimmigrant participants on using robots to support aging in place. Background: Employing non-family paid helpers has become a prevalent practice across North America, Europe, and Asia, which families adopt to alleviate the stroke care burden, allowing family to take a break from their obligations and perform other social activities. However, paid helpers' experiences of providing palliative care to stroke patients are under-explored. This study aimed to explore the caregiving experiences of non-family paid helpers providing palliative care to stroke patients. Method: A qualitative descriptive study was undertaken using purposive sampling and semi-structured individual in-depth interviews. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis. Results: Seventeen participants (mean age: 51.23 years) were included, predominantly being female (88%), and their caregiving experiences with patients ranged from four to 26 years. Participants shared that monetary compensation offset the exhaustion, familial and health sacrifices of palliative caregiving. They emphasized emotional self-management through accepting and coping or avoiding and distancing, and appreciated rewarding appraisals from stroke patients and family members. They also expressed a lack of recognition from the public, being invisible to the healthcare system/professionals, and insecurity in employment rights. Conclusions: Findings support the need for governmental initiatives to subsidize families in employing helpers to provide palliative care. Helpers perceived monetary compensation and a reciprocal caregiving relationship as the primary motives for providing care. Public recognition of this role as a helper in caregiving, contractual employment rights, and being recognized by the healthcare system and healthcare professionals are considerations in promoting quality care and alleviating a health care burden. The findings may contribute to further understanding of the experiences of non-family paid helpers in a job lacking recognition when delivering palliative care in a hospital for stroke patients. Undoubtedly, technology continues to permeate the world at an unprecedented pace. The discipline of nursing is not alien to this phenomenon as nurses continue to employ various technological objects and applications in clinical practice, education, administration and research. Despite the centrality of technology in nursing, it has not been recognised as a metaparadigm domain of interest in the discipline of nursing. Thus, this paper sought to examine if technology truly reflected a metaparadigm domain using the four requirements posited by Fawcett. Using these requirements, we examined the onto-epistemology of technology in relation to nursing and conclude that technology potentially represents a distinct domain that intersects with nursing (particularly, from the humanities perspective). Also, technology encompasses some phenomena of interest to the discipline of nursing, demonstrates perspective-neutrality, and is international in scope and substance albeit with some nuances which do not fit well with nursing onto-epistemology. Put together, it is highlighted that technology intersects with the existing metaparadigm domains (person, health, environment and nursing) which positions it as a potential phenomenon of interest to the discipline of nursing requiring further work to articulate its position and role., (© 2023 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Aims: We aimed to test a model in which hope and spiritual well-being acted as protective factors against anxiety and depressive symptoms in childhood cancer patients (CCPs). We hypothesized that hope and spiritual well-being were mutually reinforcing factors that would both reduce anxiety and depressive symptoms., Methods: Using path analysis, the hypothetical model was tested on a cross-sectional sample of 412 Chinese CCPs aged 8-17 years. Self-reported measures were used to obtain data on participants' social and clinical characteristics, spiritual well-being, hope, anxiety and depressive symptoms., Results: The hypothetical model was supported. Results suggested that sex, treatment type and diagnosis predicted spiritual well-being; diagnosis and time since diagnosis predicted hope. Spiritual well-being and hope were mutually predictive and mutually reinforcing, and were both negatively associated with anxiety and depressive symptoms. This model predicted 40% of the variance in spiritual well-being, 37% in hope, 39% in depressive symptoms, and 28% in anxiety., Conclusion: Spiritual well-being and hope were mutually reinforcing and served as protective factors against anxiety and depressive symptoms. Despite the notable benefits of palliative care (PC) for patients with chronic diseases, its delivery to people with cardiac problems, particularly in the Middle East region (EMR), remains a critical issue. There is a scarcity of research assessing nursing staff's needs and knowledge in providing PC to cardiac patients in the EMR. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and needs of PC among nurses towards the provision of PC in intensive coronary care units (ICCUs) in the Gaza Strip, Palestine. It also identified the barriers to the provision of PC services in ICCUs in the Gaza Strip. A hospital-based descriptive quantitative cross-sectional design was adopted to collect data from 85 nurses working in ICCUs at four main hospitals in the Gaza Strip. Knowledge about PC was collected using a developed questionnaire based on the Palliative Care Quiz Nursing Scale (PCQN) and Palliative Care Knowledge Test (PCKT). PC training needs and barriers were assessed using the PC Needs Assessment instrument. Approximately two-thirds of nurses did not receive any PC educational or training programs, which contributed to their lack of PC knowledge. Most nurses would like to enroll in PC training programs, such as family support and communications skills courses. Nurses reported that there was a high demand for PC guidelines and discharge planning for patients with chronic illnesses. Insufficient healthcare professionals' knowledge about PC and a staff shortage were the main barriers to integrating PC into the Gaza healthcare system. This study suggests incorporating PC into nursing curricula and in-service training, and it covers both basic and advanced PC principles. Intensive coronary care unit nurses need knowledge and training about PC, guidance, and support to provide appropriate care to patients with cardiovascular issues.

Introduction: Infections acquired in hospitals are a major concern for patients, professionals and policymakers. They have an impact on the morbidity and mortality rates, length of stay, and microbial resistance. Radiology departments are at high risk for nosocomial infections, and radiographers must adhere to infection control protocols to avoid contracting illnesses and the spread of pathogens. The purpose of this study was to assess radiographers' knowledge and practise of infection control and standard precautions in the Gaza Strip-Palestine government hospitals and to identify the factors that impede radiographers' implementation of infection control., Methods: A hospital-based descriptive cross-sectional study design was applied. A self-administered questionnaire survey with 24 items was developed and distributed to examine radiographers' knowledge and practise of nosocomial infections control and standard precautions from September 2019 to February 2020. Descriptive and inferential statistics were generated using SPSS version 20., Results: With a response rate of 86.6%, 73 males and 37 females out of a total of 127 radiographers participated in this study. The vast majority of radiographers, 86 (78.2%), have never been trained in infection control. Total levels of knowledge and practise were 74.4% and 65.2%, respectively which corresponded to moderate levels. Age had a statistically significant impact on both knowledge and practise scores (P = 0.002 and p = 0.019, respectively). In addition, the differences between radiographers' years of work experience and their ratings on knowledge and practise were statistically significant (P = 0.001 and p = 0.011, respectively). A heavy workload, insufficient time, and a lack of training were the main barriers to implementing infection control measures in hospitals., Conclusion: Palestinian radiographers reported a moderate level of knowledge and practise of infection control. Objective: To scope the literature to ascertain the components of palliative care (PC) interventions for burn patients, models of integration, and outcomes. Methods: Arksey and O'Malley scoping review design with narrative synthesis was employed and reported following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Primary studies reporting PC interventions in the burn unit were considered for inclusion. CINAHL via EBSCO, PubMed, EMBASE via OVID, Web of Science, and gray literature sources were searched from inception to June 2021. Results: Fifteen studies emerging from high-income settings were retained. Data were organized around three concepts: components of palliative/ end of life care in the burn unit; models of integration; and outcomes. The components of interventions based on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Critical Care End-of Life Group domains include decision-making, communication, symptom management and comfort care, spiritual support, and emotional and practical support for families. Consultative and integrative models were noted to be the strategies for integrating PC in the burn unit. The outcomes were varied with only few studies reporting healthcare staff related outcomes. Conclusion: PC may have the potential of improving end-of-life care in the burn unit albeit the limited studies and lack of standardized outcomes makes it difficult to draw stronger conclusions regarding what is likely to work best in the burn unit.

Purpose: Although the distress thermometer (DT) scale has been widely validated and used in different cancer types and settings, an optimal cutoff score of DT is not defined to screen advanced cancer patients. The study aimed to define the optimal DT's cutoff score among advanced cancer patients in resource-limited countries without palliative care services and to assess the prevalence and factors associated with psychological distress among this population., Methods: A secondary analysis was performed. Three hundred seventy-nine patients were recruited from Palestine. Participants completed the DT and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Receiver operating characteristic analysis (ROC) was used to define the optimal cutoff score for the DT against HADS-Total ≥15. Multiple logistic regression was utilized for identifying the factors associated with psychological distress of the DT., Results: A DT cutoff score ≥ 6 correctly identified 74% of HADS distress cases and 77% of HADS non-distress cases, with a positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of 97% and 18%, respectively. The prevalence of distress was found to be 70.7%, and the major sources of distress were related to physical (n = 373; 98.4%) and emotional problems (n = 359; 94.7%). Patients with colon (OR = 0.44, 95% CI: 0.31 - 0.62) and lymphoid cancers (OR = 0.41, 95% CI: 0.26 - 0.64) were less likely to have psychological distress than patients with other types of cancer, whereas patients with lung (OR = 1.80, 95% CI: 1.20 - 2.70) and bone cancers (OR = 1.75, 95% CI: 1.14 - 2.68) were more likely to experience it., Conclusion: A cutoff DT score of 6 appeared acceptable and effective for screening distress in patients with advanced cancer stages. Palestinian patients exhibited a high level of distress, and the high prevalence supports the argument of using a DT within the standard delivery of cancer care to identify highly distressed patients. Introduction: Cancer and its treatment affect children's physical, psychological and social well-being throughout the disease trajectory. Spiritual well-being is a fundamental dimension of people's overall health and is considered a source of strength to motivate patients to cope with and adapt to their disease. Appropriate spiritual interventions are important to mitigate the psychological impact of cancer on children, with an ultimate goal of improving their quality of life (QoL) throughout the treatment course. However, the overall effectiveness of spiritual interventions for paediatric patients with cancer remains unclear. This paper describes a protocol to systematically summarise the characteristics of studies related to existing spiritual interventions and synthesise their effectiveness on psychological outcomes and QoL among children with cancer., Methods and Analysis: Ten databases will be searched to identify appropriate literature: MEDLINE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, LILACS, OpenSIGLE, the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, the Chinese Medical Current Contents and the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure. All randomised controlled trials that meet our inclusion criteria will be included. The primary outcome will be QoL as evaluated by self-reported measures. The secondary outcomes will be self-reported or objectively measured psychological outcomes, including anxiety and depression. Background: A previous randomized controlled trial (NeCR) has indicated the effectiveness of nurse-led eHealth cardiac rehabilitation (CR) on modifying the behaviors of patients with coronary heart disease. However, limited qualitative studies explore the experiences of using eHealth CR that led to such benefits., Objective: The study aimed to explore the experiences of patients who participated in the NeCR program., Methods: A descriptive qualitative study was employed among 20 intervention group patients who used the eHealth CR website and ranked differently (0-35th percentile, >35th percentile, and > 70% percentile) in the improvement of health-promoting behaviors., Results: Five themes emerged: the NeCR program has promoted behavior change and mitigated emotional distress post-CHD. Patients described how the NeCR influenced cognitive determinants (knowledge and skill acquisition, having a roadmap, self-monitoring, and self-evaluation and resolution) and offered social support (professional counseling and peer interaction via multimedia chat) toward such change. Patients also appreciated the high affordability, accessibility, reliability of the NeCR, and expressed psychological, contextual, and technical barriers., Conclusions: Providing eHealth CR during patient discharge is warranted as an affordable, accessible, and reliable alternative to obtain health benefits. Introduction: Post-burn scarring is often cosmetically unappealing and create discomfort. This makes it crucial to understand the experience of individuals living with scars which can offer insights into their recovery. This review sought to develop an in-depth understanding of living with post-burn scars., Design: A systematic review and meta-ethnography approach were employed. We utilized an interpretive approach to inductively generate codes. These codes were examined iteratively using a constant comparison strategy following which they were re-interpreted to formulate themes which formed the basis of undertaking a narrative synthesis., Results: Twenty-five studies were retained. The analytical process yielded two themes: emergence of a new identity and living with the redefined self. The experience of living with scars is entwined with the initial trauma as the scars served as a permanent reminder of the injury. Emergence of a new identity involved a process of meaning making, mourning the loss of the old self, confronting the new self, reconciling the remains of the old self with the new, rebuilding a new identity, and navigating through functional restrictions. These processes were particularly challenging for persons involved in self-immolation. Positive coping and changing one's perspective emerged as strategies to facilitate living with the redefined self., Conclusion: Living with scars is a challenging process which is more difficult for persons whose injuries are due to self-immolation (act of burning oneself). The findings highlight a latent yet ongoing process towards subjective recovery. Objective: There is limited research exploring the experiences of people living with advanced cancer in the Gaza Strip (GS), Palestine. Thus, this study aimed to determine the level of psychological distress, anxiety, and depression among advanced cancer patients in the GS and identify factors associated with a high level of distress., Materials and Methods: A secondary analysis was performed using primary data from a larger study focusing on supportive care needs in advanced cancer patients in GS. Three hundred sixty-one patients agreed to participate and filled out the Distress Thermometer (DT) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to identify factors associated with high distress levels., Results: Over two-thirds of advanced cancer patients (70.6%) reported a high level of distress. They also reported a significantly higher distress level than patients with early cancer (96.5 vs. 3.5%; p  = 0.001). About 92.8% of participants reported depression and anxiety symptoms. Physical, emotional, and practical problems were the primary sources of distress. Breast cancer patients were more likely to have psychological distress than colon and stomach cancer patients. Newly diagnosed patients had a higher level of anxiety, depression, and distress than those who had a cancer diagnosis for an extended period., Conclusion: Patients with advanced cancer in the GS exhibited a significantly higher level of psychological distress, depression and anxiety than patients with advanced cancer elsewhere. Efforts should be made to identify psychological distress as a routine part of oncology practice. Purpose: This study aimed to explore the perspectives of policymakers and patients on breast cancer (BC) management in the Gaza Strip., Methods: A descriptive qualitative study design was employed using semi-structured in-depth interviews with 13 policymakers and focus group discussions with 19 BC patients. The four criteria presented by Lincoln and Guba were used to evaluate the validity and reliability. Data were analysed using conventional content analysis approach., Results: Three categories were generated from the qualitative data analysis: (1) limited human resources in the BC management, (2) inadequate institutional level service provision in the BC management, and (3) a lack of policy level support for the BC management. The current health services provided to Gazan BC patients are either fragmented or partially unavailable. The roles and responsibilities at the policy, system and individual levels were ambiguous. Policymakers attributed the fragmented BC services to the shortage of qualified healthcare professionals, inadequate training programmes for the staff, and lack of coordination among health institutions. Some patients expressed an insufficient knowledge about cancer screening tests, while others ignored screening for cultural reasons., Conclusion: Gaza's BC services are fragmented and not well-organised and they have received inadequate attention at the leadership and governance levels. Background and Objective: Despite the important benefits of a bibliometric approach on mapping a research field, relatively little efforts have previously been conducted to map and analyse the global trends of palliative care (PC)-related research. This bibliometric review aimed to provide an overall picture and systematic mapping of the state of research trends within the field of PC internationally., Methods: Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched to retrieve original articles focusing on PC between 2002 and 2020. Searching was conducted on 5 May 2020, and was updated on 6 May 2021. All retrieved articles were assessed by title and abstract, and the bibliometric metadata of those that met the inclusion criteria were downloaded for analysis. The results were analysed by VOSviewer and Gephi software., Results: A total of 19,199 articles met the inclusion criteria. Significant growth of the number of published articles was reported by around five-fold from 2002 to 2020. The USA and UK were the most productive countries in terms of the number of papers published and citations. Weak collaborations were observed between low-income or middle-income countries and high-income countries. Cancer-related PC research was the most common focus. Seven clusters of research were identified and included heart failure and cancer prognosis, nursing home, pain and symptoms management, PC knowledge and attitudes, quality improvement of services, PC ethics, and the ongoing assessment of PC services., Conclusions: There is a need to expand PC-related research to non-cancer diseases. More international research and cross-institutional cooperation is required to address more global PC issues and benefit from wider sharing of expertees, potentially leading to higher quality or more impactful studies. Background: The experiences of men in nursing academia remain poorly understood globally as they remain a minority within the underrepresented male nursing populace., Purpose: To develop a comparative understanding of the experiences of male nurse educators., Method: We conducted a systematic review and meta-synthesis. Studies were considered eligible if they employed qualitative methodologies, contained verbatim quotes, published in a peer-reviewed journal and full-text available in English. An interpretive stance inspired by Ricoeur's hermeneutic approach was employed to undertake data analysis., Results: Five studies were retained in the study. Three themes and ten subthemes emerged. Becoming describes why male nurses enter and stay in academia. Although several factors may push them, they often experienced isolation requiring them to overcome leading to professional growth., Conclusion: The space of becoming and overcoming can be a lonely and isolated journey, often with no role models to support the process. Translating research into clinical practice is a global priority because of its potential impact on health services delivery and outcomes. Despite the ever-increasing depth and breadth of health research, most areas across the globe seem to be slow to translate relevant research evidence into clinical practice. Thus, this review sought to synthesise existing literature to elucidate the barriers and facilitators to the translation of health research into clinical practice. A systematic review of reviews approach was utilised. Review studies were identified across PubMed, Scopus, Embase, CINAHL and Web of Science databases, from their inception to 15 March 2021. Searching was updated on 30 March 2022. All retrieved articles were screened by two authors; reviews meeting the inclusion criteria were retained. Based on the review type, two validated tools were employed to ascertain their quality: A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews-2 and International Narrative Systematic assessment. The framework synthesis method was adopted to guide the analysis and narrative synthesis of data from selected articles. Ten reviews met the inclusion criteria. The study revealed that the translation of new evidence was limited predominantly by individual-level issues and less frequently by organisational factors. Inadequate knowledge and skills of individuals to conduct, organise, utilise and appraise research literature were the primary individual-level barriers. Limited access to research evidence and lack of equipment were the key organisational challenges. To circumvent these barriers, it is critical to establish collaborations and partnerships between policy makers and health professionals at all levels and stages of the research process. The study concluded that recognising barriers and facilitators could help set key priorities that aid in translating and integrating research evidence into practice. Background: Existing evidence suggest the emergence of palliative care (PC) services in the emergency department (ED). To gain insight into the nature of these services and provide direction to future actions, there is a need for a comprehensive review that ascertains the components of these services, integration models, and outcomes., Methods: A scoping review design was employed and reported according to the PRISMA extension guidelines for scoping reviews. Extensive searches in peer-reviewed databases (CINAHL, EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Medline) and gray literature sources (Trove, MedNar, OpenGrey, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality) were undertaken and supplemented with hand searching. Titles, abstracts, and full text were reviewed in duplicate. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they reported on a PC intervention implemented in the ED for adults. Codes were formulated across the included studies, which facilitated the conduct of a narrative synthesis., Results: Twenty-three studies were retained with the majority (n = 15) emerging from the United States. The components of PC interventions in the ED were categorized as: (1) screening, (2) goals of care discussion and communication, (3) managing pain and other distressing symptoms in the ED, (4) transitions across care settings, (5) end-of-life (EoL) care, (6) family/caregiver support, and (7) ED staff education. Traditional PC consultations and integrated ED-PC services were the main modes of delivery. PC in the ED can potentially improve patient symptoms, facilitate access to relevant services, reduce length of stay, improve care at the EoL, facilitate bereavement and postbereavement support for family members, and improve ED staff confidence in delivering PC., Conclusions: PC implementation in the ED may potentially improve patient and family outcomes. More studies are needed, however, to standardize trigger or screening tools. (1) Background: Nursing students should be well-prepared and educated in order to provide high-quality palliative care (PC) to patients with chronic diseases, which will have an impact on the quality of care for dying patients in the future; this study aimed to investigate the level of knowledge about PC and attitudes towards the care of dying patients among Palestinian nursing undergraduate students; (2) Methods: The study was a descriptive quantitative cross-sectional study design of 410 nursing students who participated and completed the questionnaire. The PC Quiz for Nurses (PCQN) and the Short Version of the Frommelt Attitudes Towards Care of the Dying (FATCOD) Form B Scales were used to assess students' PC knowledge and attitudes toward PC and caring for dying patients. Generalized linear regression analysis was applied to identify the influencing variables on knowledge and attitudes; (3) Results: The overall knowledge mean score was 7.42 ± 2.93, ranging from 0 to 20, which indicates that nursing students lacked knowledge about PC; however, they have a positive attitude (25.94 ± 4.72; ranging from 9 to 45) toward care for a dying person. Receiving lectures or training about PC, caring for relatives in their last days of life, gender, and year of study were independently associated with students' knowledge and attitudes about PC and care of dying patients; and (4) Conclusion: This study generated evidence showing insufficient knowledge about PC among nursing students at the Al-Quds University, Palestine, albeit a favorable attitude towards EoLC was shown. Integrating PC education into the nursing curriculum at Palestinian Universities need to increase their awareness of PC.

Despite the increasing number of publications globally, the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored significant research gaps that should be resolved, including within PC-related research. This study aimed to map and understand the global trends in palliative care (PC)-related COVID-19 research and provide quantitative evidence to guide future studies. We systematically searched four databases between 1st January 2020 and 25th April 2022. The VOSviewer, Gephi, and R software were utilized for data analysis and results visualization. A total of 673 articles were identified from the databases between 1st January 2020 and 25th April 2022. Canada (6.2%), Australia (5.4%), and the United Kingdom (3.8%) were the most productive countries regarding articles published per million confirmed COVID-19 cases. A lack of international collaborations and an uneven research focus on PC across countries with different pandemic trajectories was observed. The PC research in question focused on cancer, telehealth, death and dying, and bereavement. This study's conclusions support the recommendation for international collaboration to facilitate knowledge and practice transformation to support countries with unmet PC needs during the pandemic. Further studies are required on the grief and bereavement support of families, healthcare professionals and patients with other life-threatening illnesses.

Reinfection and reactivation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have recently raised public health pressing concerns in the fight against the current pandemic globally. In this study, we propose a new dynamic model to study the transmission of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The model incorporates possible relapse, reinfection and environmental contribution to assess the combined effects on the overall transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2. The model's local asymptotic stability is analyzed qualitatively. We derive the formula for the basic reproduction number ( R 0 ) and final size epidemic relation, which are vital epidemiological quantities that are used to reveal disease transmission status and guide control strategies. Furthermore, the model is validated using the COVID-19 reported situations in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, sensitivity analysis is examined by implementing a partial rank correlation coefficient technique to obtain the ultimate rank model parameters to control or mitigate the pandemic effectively. Finally, we employ a standard Euler technique for numerical simulations of the model to elucidate the influence of some crucial parameters on the overall transmission dynamics. A scarcity in research assessing the palliative care (PC) educational and health care system-related issues has been reported in the Middle East region; the region comprises a wide range of economically diverse countries. Discrepancies across countries have created difficulties in adopting other countries' experiences. This study aimed to assess PC knowledge, attitude, educational needs, and health care system-related issues from physicians' and nurses' perspectives before developing PC services within the Palestinian health care system. One hundred sixty-nine professionals participated in this cross-sectional survey. Data were collected by validated instruments. Professionals had insufficient knowledge about PC, but they had positive attitudes toward end-of-life care and care of the dying. Patients'/families' avoidance of talking about issues around dying and lack of training for staff related to PC were the most 2 significant barriers to providing PC. Educational level and previous training were found to be associated significantly with knowledge and attitudes toward PC. Objectives: A brief discussion with policy leaders and citizens was conducted to understand the unwillingness of people to get the COVID-19 vaccine and their suggestions to increase the vaccination level., Background: Despite the crucial benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine, people are unwilling to get vaccinated. Vaccine hesitancy is a significant problem globally. In Palestine, at the time of this study only about 30% of the population were vaccinated., Methods: We used a descriptive qualitative design with semistructured interviews., Discussion: The unwillingness of Palestinian people to get the COVID-19 vaccine was attributed to the spread of false rumours, misinformation, and conspiracy theories they received about the vaccine on the social media and mistrust towards vaccines the government purchased. There is a dire need to develop motivational strategies (i.e., incentives) and reconsider the media discourse and its unification to encourage people to get the vaccines. Background: Although several studies assessing the needs of advanced cancer patients have been conducted globally, most have focused on a specific type of cancer such as lung or breast cancer. The variation across studies has also created difficulties in generalizing the results and applying the findings in other countries. The aim of this study was to provide comprehensive information on the needs of Palestinian advanced cancer patients. The quality of life (QOL), distress levels, depression, anxiety, and spiritual well-being of the patients were also assessed., Methods: A hospital-based study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on a convenience sample of patients aged 18 or above who had been diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer. The unmet needs of the patients were assessed using the Short form of the Supportive Care Needs Survey (SCNS-SF34). Four instruments were utilized to examine their distress, anxiety, depression, QOL, and spirituality. A modified Supportive Care Framework was adopted to guide the design of this study. Descriptive statistics and hierarchical linear regression were utilized to analyse the data., Results: Of the 404 cancer patients invited to the study, 379 patients consented to participate and complete the questionnaire. Of them 96.8% stated that they had at least one 'moderate to high' level unmet need. The most frequent unmet needs were those in the physical aspects of daily living (Mean 58.94; SD ± 20.93) and psychological (Mean 58.84; SD ± 19.49) domains. Most of the patients (91%) were physically ill and reported experiencing physical symptoms. About 78.1% had a high level of distress. Almost 90% reported signs of depression and anxiety. Although they felt that their spiritual well-being was good, their QOL was poor. Hierarchical linear regression analyses confirmed that educational level, age, gender, marital status, cancer stage, cancer type, physical symptoms, depression, anxiety, distress, QOL, and spirituality were independently associated with unmet supportive care needs., Conclusion: Palestinian advanced cancer patients exhibit a significantly higher prevalence of unmet needs than those in other countries, indicating a need to develop a palliative care programme within the healthcare system. Background: Despite increasing recognition of the role played by palliative care (PC) services, the priorities of policymakers in supporting PC remain unclear and have sometimes engendered controversy. There are few studies exploring policymakers' perspectives towards PC services, with most shedding light on obstacles to PC development. Furthermore, no study has explored policymakers' perspectives towards providing PC at the national level in resource-limited countries. This study provides a platform for providing PC as part of the Palestinian healthcare system (HCS) by exploring policymakers' perspectives on PC, an essential step to developing a PC programme., Methods: A descriptive qualitative study design was employed using semi-structured interviews. Participants were those identified as responsible for making executive and legislative decisions about health services (including PC) in the HCS. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis., Results: Twelve decision and policymakers participated in the study. Four categories were generated from the content analysis: (1) the nature of current PC healthcare services, (2) the potential benefits of PC, (3) challenges to providing PC, and (4) considerations in providing PC. The current PC services provided to Palestinian patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families are not comprehensive, and are limited to symptom management. There is a Palestinian national strategic plan for developing PC; however, the development goals are not clearly defined, and the plan's capabilities are inadequate. Several challenges to the provision of PC were found to relate to issues of education and training, the allocation of funding, and the availability of medications., Conclusions: Integrating PC into the Palestinian university curricula as a compulsory course and establishing higher degree programmes in PC to overcome the shortage of PC specialists is required. Developing policies aligned with national laws could help enhance health services to patients and their families and resolve several challenges. Objectives: Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the Gaza Strip, Palestine, but there is an absence of evidence systematically assessing symptom burden and quality of life (QoL) using validated tools. Our objective was to assess associations between socio-demographic and disease-related characteristics, symptom burden and QoL in a sample of cancer patients accessing outpatient services in the Gaza Strip., Design: A cross-sectional, descriptive survey using interviews and medical record review involving patients with cancer accessing oncology outpatient services at Al Rantisi Hospital and European Gaza Hospital (EGH) in the Gaza Strip was employed. Socio-demographic and disease-related data, the Lebanese version of the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale (MSAS-Leb), and the Arabic version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) were collected. Multiple linear regression was used to judge the relative influence of determinants of QoL., Results: Of 414 cancer patients approached, 385 patients consented to participation. The majority were women (64.7%) with a mean age of 52 years (SD = 16.7). Common cancer diagnoses were breast (32.2%), haematological (17.9%) and colorectal (9.1%). The median number of symptoms was 10 (IQR 1.5-18.5). Mean overall QoL was 70.5 (SD 19.9) with common physical and psychological symptoms identified. A higher burden of symptoms was associated with marital status, education and income. Limited access to both opioids and psychological support were reported., Conclusions: A high symptom burden was identified in outpatients with cancer. Objective: This review aims at gaining a broad overview of national approaches about Palliative care (PC) implementation into health care systems in countries that have PC identified within their national policies and strategies., Methods: Paper searching was conducted using both peer-reviewed databases and gray literature sources covering governmental reports with PC strategies from 2000 onward. Articles published in English that cited at least 1 category of the WHO's public health PC model were included. Qualitative content analysis was used for data analysis and synthesis of findings., Results: Thirteen reports met the inclusion criteria. Education and appropriate policies were the most frequent strategies covered by all countries included. Under education; information about training health care providers was needed for the effective introduction of a PC program. Reviewing standards of care required to deliver PC effectively, and financial support for PC service development were considered the central policies needed. Furthermore, partnerships and collaborations across the health systems as well as providing care based on patients' needs were required for the provision of a PC program., Conclusion: It is of the essence to learn from countries demonstrating enhanced PC practices before the implementation of a new PC program in a given country. Such practices could be used as a guide and to address barriers that may hinder the development of PC at a national level. Best practices can be achieved by focusing on educational and policy-based strategies through identifying patients' needs, assessing general public awareness, health care providers' knowledge and training as well as incorporating stakeholders' perspectives.

The emergence of the coronavirus pandemic led to the implementation of several precautionary measures across the globe. For densely populated regions in the world, this may have been challenging given the proximity of people to one other. Thus, this brief report sought to compare the measures across 2 densely populated locations, Hong Kong and Gaza. Epidemiological data was obtained from governmental online repositories and was compared with the data presented by the Johns Hopkins coronavirus map to ensure consistency. Descriptive statistics were used to interpret the data obtained over the period of the study. The data suggested that although Hong Kong and Gaza implemented similar strategies, Gaza recorded marginally higher cases compared with Hong Kong in the same timeframe. The strategies implemented in both settings included border closures, social distancing, proper hand hygiene, and mask usage. Cultural and socio-demographic differences may have played a part in this variation in case numbers, in addition to lessons Hong Kong had previously learned from a similar outbreak. Background: Despite the significant benefits of palliative care (PC) services for cancer patients, multiple challenges hinder the provision of PC services for these patients. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are witnessing a sharp growth in the burden of non-communicable diseases. There is a significant gap between demand and supply of PC in LMICs in current health services. This review aims to synthesise evidence from previous reviews and deliver a more comprehensive mapping of the existing literature about personal, system, policy, and organisational challenges and possible facilitators on the provision of PC services for cancer patients in LMICs., Methods: A systematic review of reviews was performed following PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, PsycINFO, Web of Sciences, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library databases were searched to identify review papers published between 2000 and 2018 that considered challenges and possible facilitators to PC provision. A modified socioecological model was used as a framework for analysing and summarising findings., Results: Fourteen reviews were included. The reviews varied in terms of aim, settings, and detail of the challenges and possible facilitators. The main challenges of personal and health care systems included knowledge deficits and misunderstandings from patients, families, the general public, and health care providers about PC; and inadequate number of trained workforce. Besides, limited physical infrastructure, insufficient drugs for symptom relief and lack of a comprehensive national plan for implementing PC were the core organisational and policy level challenges that were recognised. Furthermore, the main possible facilitators that were identified included provision of adequate training for health care providers and health education for patients, families and the general public to enhance their knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes to PC. Finally, involvement of policymakers and making drugs available for symptom relief should also be in place to improve the health care systems., Conclusions: Understanding challenges to the provision of PC for people with cancer could help in the development of a PC pathway in LMICs. This knowledge could be used as a guide to develop an intervention programme to improve PC. Political influence and support are also required to ensure the sustainability and the provision of high-quality PC.
