Abstract

Agave grijalvensis(B. Ullrich) was inoculated with Glomus fasciculatum(Thaxter sensu Gerd.) Gerd. and Trappe) and fertilized with different amounts of phosphorus (P) during plant development. Mycorrhizal colonization, fructan accumulation and fructosyltransferases enzymatic activities were determined. Glomus fasciculatumincreased fresh weight of A. grijalvensis, the number of leaves, root length and fructan concentrations in stems and leaves. Phosphorus increased sucrose content, but reduced glucose and fructose concentrations in both leaves and stems. Activities of 1-fructosyltransferase (1-SST) (EC 2.4.1.99) and β-fructan-1-fructosyltransferase (1-FFT) (EC 2.4.1.100) were determined and explained due to different levels of fructans detected in A. grijalvensisplantlets.

Abstract

Background: Tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) in the form of frozen fillets is one of the fishes with the highest commercial production levels worldwide. However, protein denaturation, membrane rupture, and lipid oxidation are commonly observed in fillets when stored at standard commercial freezing temperatures for long periods. This study proposes, for the first time, the use of maltodextrin and state diagrams to define processing strategies and suitable storage temperatures for fresh and dehydrated tilapia fillets. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to study the effect of maltodextrin weight fractions (WMD) of 0, 0.4, and 0.8 on the thermal transitions of tilapia fillets as a function of solid mass fractions (Ws). Results: The glass transition temperature curve (Tgvs.Ws) and characteristic parameters of maximal freeze concentration (Tg′, Tm′, Ws′) of tilapia increased significantly with the addition of maltodextrin. Using developed state diagrams, freezing and storage temperatures of −22 °C, −15 °C, and −10 °C (P < 0.05) for long‐term preservation were defined for tilapia fillets produced with WMD of 0, 0.4, and 0.8. Conclusion: Maltodextrin is an excellent alternative as a cryoprotectant and drying aid to increase the thermal parameters of tilapia fillets by achieving frozen storage temperatures above the standard commercial freezing temperature of −18 °C. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry. Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess how the application of Limosilactobacillus fermentumBAL-21-ITTG in alginate-based edible coatings to osmodehydrated papaya pieces affects the physicochemical and organoleptic properties of the fruit. The papaya was sliced, and these pieces were osmodehydrated at 40 °C in a sucrose solution (45 °Brix) for 6 h. Subsequently, the osmodehydrated papaya pieces (OPPs) were dried for an additional 6 h at 40 °C. The OPPs were categorized into four groups and subjected to the following treatments: T1 (coated with a sodium alginate solution and L. fermentum, followed by gelation with CaCl2); T2 (coated with a sodium alginate solution and L. fermentum); T3 (coated with L. fermentum); and T4 (uncoated). Subsequently, the OPPs were stored in polyethylene containers at 4 °C for a duration of 34 days. The viability of L. fermentumand its survival during gastrointestinal simulation, as well as physicochemical, microbiological, and organoleptic properties were assessed during storage. The T1 treatment exhibited increased firmness throughout storage and sustained higher L. fermentumviability (8.88 log CFU/g) with a 98% survival rate during gastrointestinal simulation. The sodium alginate coatings, serving as a carrier for L. fermentumaddition, enhanced the organoleptic attributes of the OPPs over the 34-day storage period. Sodium alginate sourced from S. fluitansis suitable for food applications. Therefore, this technology, involving the addition of sodium alginate from S. fluitansand L. fermentum, could be employed for functional food production and industrial applications.

Abstract

The high susceptibility to deterioration and diseases during the supply chain and/or during the storage of fresh products is a problem in the industry, and edible films are proposed as efficient methods to preserve its quality. The objective was to obtain and characterize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and determine their effect on optical, barrier and mechanical properties of alginate-based films. The alginate was extracted from Sargassum fluitans. AgNPs were obtained by green synthesis using Gliricidia sepium. The UV–Vis and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to characterize the AgNPs. The antifungal activity of AgNPs was investigated using several fungal strains. Films were formulated by using 2 and 3% alginate, as well as 0, 1, and 2 mg of AgNPs per mL of formulation, with glycerol as a plasticizer. A randomized experimental design was used to test the effect to alginate and the AgNPs concentrations. The results were analyzed by an ANOVA test (p< 0.05). The films were characterized by water vapor permeability (WVP), mechanical properties, opacity, color, glass transition and melting temperatures, as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-Ray (EDS) spectroscopy. WVP, optical and mechanical properties of the films were influenced statistically with alginate and AgNPs concentrations. The PVA values varied between 0.83 and 1.74 g mm h−1kPa−1m−2. The results demonstrated that films made with higher alginate and AgNPs concentrations exhibited higher tensile strength (20.35 MPa) and elongation at break (74.56%). The AgNPs showed percentages of growth inhibition higher than 79% in all fungal strains tested. The films formulated had attractive properties that are used to extend shelf life of foods.

Abstract

Current protocols for Agave americana L. micropropagation have limited commercial application due to the low number of plants produced by explant. Indirect organogenesis could be an alternative, however is necessary to optimize plant growth regulators for plantlet number maximization. The objective of this work was to optimize 2,4-dicholorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 6-benzyl adenine (BA) concentrations on the induction of A. americana embryogenic callus from apical meristem as explant for maximized the number of shoots per callus using a response surface experimental design. MS medium containing 30 g l-1 sucrose amended with 0.11,0.18, 0.45 or 2.26 μM 2,4-D, and 11.0, 22.0, 38.2 or 44.0 μM BA was used. Nine treatments with three repetitions was applied and number of shoots per callus were monitored after 4, 16, 20 and 36 weeks. In vitro rooting of shoot was done in MS medium added with indole butyric acid (IBA). A maximum number of plantlets per explant (74) was obtained with 2.26 μM of 2,4-D and 38.2 μM BA. In conclusion, the indirect organogenesis of A. americana L. could be an alternative for obtain plantlets for propagation commercial purposes. Los protocolos actuales para la micropropagación de Agave americana L. tienen limitaciones para su aplicación comercial debido al bajo número de plantas producidas por cada explante. La organogénesis indirecta podría ser una alternativa, sin embargo, es necesario optimizar los reguladores de crecimiento vegetal para maximizar el número de plantas. El objetivo del trabajo fue optimizar la concentración de ácido 2,4-diclorofenoxiacetico (2,4-D) y de 6-bencil adenina (BA) sobre la inducción de callos embriogénicos en A. americana usando meristemos apicales como explante para maximizar el número de brotes por callo, utilizando un diseño experimental de superficie de respuesta. Se utilizó el medio Murashige Skoog (MS) adicionado con 30 g l-1 de sacarosa, y con 0,11;0,18; 0,45 o 2,26 μM de 2,4-D, y 11,0; 22,0; 38,2 o 44,0 μM de BA. Se implementaron 9 tratamientos con 3 repeticiones y el número de brotes por callo fue evaluado después de 4, 16, 20 y 36 semanas. Se indujo el enraizamiento in vitro usando medio MS adicionado con ácido indolbutírico (AIB). Se obtuvo un máximo de 74 plántulas por callo, usando 2,26 μM de 2,4-D y 38,2 μM de BA. En conclusión, la organogénesis indirecta podría ser una alternativa para la micropropagación de A. americana L con fines comerciales.
