Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are efficient electrochemical energy device that converts the chemical energy of fuels directly into electricity. It has a high power and energy density and a sustainable source of energy. The electrode (cathode and anode) materials are essential for the efficient operation of SOFCs. Several electrode materials have been studied in the last two decades, mainly perovskite materials. The investigated materials have resulted in improved electrochemical performance of SOFCs, increased commercial viability, and reduced operational costs. However, the sustainability of most of the material compositions (heteroatoms) used as electrodes in SOFCs has never been investigated. The present study examines the recent progress, challenges, and constraints associated with electrode material development in SOFCs from a sustainable perspective. Heteroatoms majorly employed for doping in electrode materials’ long-term availability on the earth’s surface was established. The study also provides an overview on the current state of electrode materials development for symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells. This is intended to address the complexities of different materials development for the anode and cathode.

We are introducing cost effective, easily available brick sand nano-particles (BSNP) (44.208 nm) as an adsorbent in batch process for removal of heavy toxic metals such as Pb, Cd, and Cr from aqueous solution. We used two types of adsorbents, one is acid treated BSNP and other one is untreated BSNP, and investigated adsorbent properties with function of contact time, temperature, and pH. The efficiency or performance of adsorbent was characterized by AAS for percentage of removal from solution, EDS for elemental analysis to confirm the metals adsorption. The Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Hill De Boer, Elovich, and Redlich-Peterson adsorption isotherms were studies to find out the quality of the adsorbent. At 5.68 to 7.6 pH, the maximum removal percentages of Pb, Cd, and Cr were 97% from the aqueous solution. The temperatures at 40℃ to 60℃, the Pb, Cd, and Cr experiments were carried out at their highest possible percentages (98%). The reaction process was pseudo-second order model and several thermodynamic factors, including Intraparticle diffusion, Elovich kinetic model, Boyd kinetic model, activation energy, Gibbs free energy, enthalpy change, and entropy change ensured the adsorbent efficiency of brick sand nanoparticles. The results of present research indicated that Brick Sand Nano-Particles (BSNP) may play a vital role as a cost-effective, efficient, and easily available adsorbent for the removal of Pb, Cd, and Cr from wastewater.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a multidrug-resistant pathogen associated with pneumonia, otitis media, meningitis and other severe complications that are currently a global threat to human health. The World Health Organization listed Pneumococcus as the fourth of twelve globally prioritized pathogens. Identifying alternatives to antibiotic therapies is urgently needed to combat Pneumococcus. Bacteriophage-derived endolysins can be used as alternative therapeutics due to their bacterial cell wall hydrolyzing capability. In this study, S. pneumoniae phage genomes were screened to create a database of endolysins for molecular modelling and diversity analysis of these lytic proteins. A total of 89 lytic proteins were curated from 81 phage genomes and categorized into eight groups corresponding to their different enzymatically active (EAD) domains and cell wall binding (CBDs) domains. We then constructed three-dimensional structures that provided insights into these endolysins. Group I, II, III, V, and VI endolysins showed conserved catalytic and ion-binding residues similar to existing endolysins available in the Protein Data Bank. While performing structural and sequence analysis with template lysin, an additional cell wall binding repeat was observed in Group II lysin, which was not previously known. Molecular docking performed with choline confirmed the existence of this additional repeat. Group III endolysins showed 99.16 % similarity to LysME-EF1, a lysin derived from Enterococcus faecalis. Furthermore, the comparative computational analysis revealed the existence of CBDs in Group III lysin. This study provides the first insight into the molecular and diversity analysis of S. pneumoniae phage endolysins that could be valuable for developing novel lysin-based therapeutics.

The conversion parameters in biodiesel production have a substantial impact on the yield of methyl esters, consequently affecting the physicochemical properties of the fuel. Tucuma and Ungurahui bio-oils were used in this study to optimize the process parameters. A total of 27 transesterification experiments were conducted for each bio-oil, and the results were statistically investigated using the RSM approach. In addition, advanced kinetic modelling was performed using Aspen Plus software tools on the Tucuma biodiesel transesterification process to investigate the key effect of process parameters on the fuel properties. The study found a greater yield of 99.4 % and 99.5 % for Tucuma and Ungurahui, respectively, under optimized parametric conditions. ANOVA tests revealed lower p-values for catalyst and temperature, indicating their significant influence on the conversion process. For both fuels, GC–MS tests recorded 100 % methyl esters, and fuel properties agree with the ASTM biodiesel standards. Notably, the viscosity of both biodiesels is 4.0 mm2/s, which closely matches that of diesel fuel. Furthermore, the process parameters such as methanol-to-oil ratio, catalyst, and temperatures influenced the methyl esters such as oleate, linoleate, and palmitate, impacting properties density and calorific value. Besides, viscosity was affected by the time parameter, which in turn influenced methyl stearate. The study concludes that while the process parameters influenced the fuel properties, their overall impact on the change was marginal.

Abstract Background Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) is a major global public health problem. Increasing the price of SSBs through taxation is an effective tool to reduce SSB consumption. Price-elasticity estimates are useful in measuring the effect of taxation on consumption. We estimated the own price elasticities of demand for SSBs in Bangladesh, which will inform how SSB taxes could affect behaviour. Methods We used Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) 2016 data, which is a nationally representative dataset at the household level across the country and is conducted using stratified random sampling method. Deaton’s method was used to estimate the price elasticities for SSBs in Bangladesh. Results We found that the own price elasticity for SSBs varied between − 0.53% to -1.17% by types of SSBs in Bangladesh. The price elasticity for soft drinks was − 1.17, indicating that if the price of soft drinks increases by 10% via taxes, the quantity consumed of these beverages would reduce by 11.7%. Conclusion This is the first study that estimates the own price elasticities of demand for SSBs in Bangladesh. Our results suggest to raise SSB prices through increased taxation in order to reduce SSB consumption and ensure public health gains in Bangladesh.

Background: In 2015, the Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA) of Bangladesh accredited model pharmacies (MPs) to enhance the quality of pharmacy services across the country. We examined the challenges and opportunities for pharmacists in MPs, and also explored the perspectives of the pharmacy stakeholders for improving good pharmacy practices (GPPs) in Bangladesh. Methods: In-depth interviews (IDIs) were conducted with graduate pharmacists (Grade A) and diploma pharmacists (Grade B) recruited from a few selected MPs that were included in a previous study. Key informant interviews (KIIs) were conducted with the government and non-government stakeholders who were involved in pharmacy regulations and practices. Trained qualitative researchers conducted IDIs and KIIs using interview topic guides under relevant themes developed by the study investigators. Results: Between February and March 2021, nine Grade A and six Grade B pharmacists and nine government and non-government stakeholders were interviewed. The key challenges, as well as demotivational factors, for Grade A pharmacists were reported to be multiple responsibilities, inadequate salary, poor social status, an unfavorable working environment, long working hours, a lack of recognition, and low respect for their profession. However, Grade B pharmacists expressed job satisfaction, primarily due to working opportunities in reputable pharmacies and learning opportunities. The stakeholders reported a high operation cost of the MPs, a shortage of trained pharmacists, poor salary structures, and a lack of public awareness about the critical roles of the pharmacists in healthcare to be challenges of retaining Grade A pharmacists at the MPs. Addressing the challenges of the pharmacists and revising compensation packages along with strengthening monitoring systems would be important for improving GPPs at the MPs. Conclusions: This study has demonstrated that specifying the roles of the pharmacists, offering competitive packages, conducive working hours, and professional recognition would be imperative for the retention of trained pharmacists at MPs. Implementing regulatory standards and monitoring performance would enhance good pharmacy practices in Bangladesh.

There have been many academic investigations on promoting human behaviour in favour of environmental sustainability through education. Yet only a limited number of review papers are found which have summarized the key findings of this vital area. This study uses both bibliometric and text mining approaches to examine pro-environmental behaviour in education literature for the first time. Through bibliometric analysis, different networks in contemporary literature are highlighted. These networks reveal the influence of social welfare on pro-environmental behaviour, highlighting the value of human innate connection to raise environmental consciousness. Additionally, using posterior probability and Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), text mining identifies 12 different topic models by log-likelihood estimation, addressing a variety of topics related to environmental education and behaviour, such as how visitors and sustainability in environmental education affect pro-environmental behaviour, how education towards sustainability is provided in schools and universities, how the theory of planned behaviour is applied, how education and pro-environmental behaviour are related, and how sustainable education and travel are explored through different channels.

Metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) have garnered significant attention due to their ability to improve the therapeutic index of medications by reducing multidrug resistance and effectively delivering therapeutic agents through active targeting. In addition to drug delivery, MNPs have several medical applications, including in vitro and in vivo diagnostics, and they improve the biocompatibility of materials and nutraceuticals. MNPs have several advantages in drug delivery systems and genetic manipulation, such as improved stability and half-life in circulation, passive or active targeting into the desired target selective tissue, and gene manipulation by delivering genetic materials. The main goal of this review is to provide current information on the present issues and prospects of MNPs in drug and gene delivery systems. The current study focused on MNP preparation methods and their characterization by different techniques, their applications to targeted delivery, non-viral vectors in genetic manipulation, and challenges in clinical trial translation.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have emerged as promising energy conversion devices, offering high efficiency and environmental sustainability. Efficient electrode materials are crucial for the overall cell performance of SOFCs. Perovskite type Nd1-xSrxMn0.5Cr0.5O3-δ (x = 0.25, 0.5) (NSCM25, NSCM50) was synthesized via conventional solid-state reaction technique. Structural, thermal and electrochemical characterizations were performed using X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, conductivity measurements, scanning electron microscope, thermal expansion coefficient analysis and impedance spectroscopy. Structural analysis revealed that both compositions exhibit orthorhombic symmetry in the Pbnm space group. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated minimal weight changes in both pre-reduced and as-prepared samples. The electrical conductivities in air at 600 ℃ were found to be 1.69 S/cm for NSCM25 and 4.91 S/cm for NSCM50, with a decrease observed under reduced oxygen partial pressure. Polarization resistance (Rp) analysis was conducted on symmetrical cells composed of NSCM25|GDC|NSCM25, NSCM50|GDC|NSCM50, NSCM25|YSZ|NSCM25, and NSCM50|YSZ|NSCM50. At 900 ℃, the polarization resistances were 0.12 Ωcm2, 0.21 Ωcm2, 0.11 Ωcm2, and 0.67 Ωcm2, respectively. The results suggest that NSCM25 and NSCM50 hold promise as electrode materials for symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells (SSOFC) employing YSZ or GDC electrolyte.

In past decades, nanomedicine has become a prominent area of focus within the discipline of nanotechnology, eliciting significant anticipation within the field of biomedical research. Scientists are creating unique nanoparticles for diagnosis, utilising techniques for imaging as well as therapy applications using medication delivery techniques. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), a recent addition to this area, serve as a sterling example of innovative nanostructures that offer distinctive and exceptional features. These features make them valuable for developing drug delivery systems with consistent and positive advancements in preclinical. MSNs efficiently encapsulate, control, and sometimes deliver biologic agents intracellularly for clinical use due to their distinct physicochemical characteristics, such as high porosity, large surface area, adjustable pore size and dimensions, good biocompatibility, and significant loading capacity. In this article, we discuss the latest advancements in fabrication, their presumed usefulness in delivering medications, and their application as diagnostic tools. It has been demonstrated that silica can store and release therapeutics, such as antibiotics, in a sustained and controlled manner. The desirable properties of MSNs have been further enhanced by modifying the surface of the siliceous frameworks through incorporating supramolecular assemblies and various metal species and their conjugates. These substantial advancements in innovative colloidal inorganic nanocontainers have driven researchers to explore their use in novel applications, such as stimuli (light/ultrasound/ magnetic)-responsive delivery-associated therapies with exceptional in vivo performance. This article provides a brief overview of the fabrication of siliceous frameworks and discusses significant advances in the engineering of MSNs. The precise control of the shape, dimension, homogeneity, and dispersity of MSNs is crucial, as these characteristics are critical quality attributes necessary for regulatory approval. Currently, explicit FDA guidelines for developing nanomaterial-based formulations intended for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes are lacking. Therefore, establishing standardised protocols and techniques for the synthesis and characterisation of nanoparticles, particularly for their use as theranostics, is essential for future commercial potential.

This study was conducted to identify yield and yield contributing attributes of wheat genotypes in response to heat stress. In this respect, eight wheat genotypes viz., Pavon-76, Prodip, BARI Gom-25, BARI Gom-26, BAW-1143, BAW-1146, BAW-1147 and BAW-118 were used as study materials. The experiment was evaluated in relation to heat tolerance in field condition by seeding them at November 27 (normal), December 17 (late) and January 7 (very late growing condition) over two successive years. Spike length, spike number per plant, floret number per spike and grain number per spike, floret/spike, spike dry weight and individual seed weight (seed size), grain yield, biological yield and harvest index were observed highest at normal growing condition. At late and very late growing heat stress conditions, all the genotypes showed reduced performance in those parameters at different magnitudes. Heat tolerant genotypes had higher relative values in those attributes than the MHT and heat sensitive genotype at late growing condition. Late and very late growing heat stress conditions increased the sterility in all the genotypes. HSI calculated in stress environments to assess their stress potential on the basis of grain yield. The HSI values of Prodip, BAW-1146, BAW-1147, BAW-1148 and Pavon-76 were higher than 1.0, indicating that these genotypes were susceptible to heat stress. The HSI values of the remaining three wheat genotypes indicate their various levels of tolerance to high temperature. Among them BARI Gom-25, BARI Gom-26 and BAW-1143 were tolerant to heat stress.

Abstract Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a pressing global health concern, especially in resource-constrained countries, such as Bangladesh. This study aimed to identify the factors contributing to antibiotic misuse by assessing knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP). A cross-sectional study was conducted from August 20 to August 30, 2022, among 704 parents of school-going children in Dhaka South City. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the KAP, and multivariate models, including linear and ordinal logistic regression, were used to explore the associations between these factors. The findings revealed that approximately 22% of the participants were male and 78% were female. Most parents (58%) had completed higher secondary education. Approximately 45% of the respondents demonstrated moderate knowledge, 53% had uncertain attitudes, and 64% exhibited antibiotic misuse. Factors such as parental age, education level, employment status, income, child's age, and family type significantly influenced KAP. These findings emphasize the importance of targeted education and awareness initiatives to enhance knowledge and responsible antibiotic use among parents, contributing to global efforts against antibiotic resistance. The government should enforce laws and regulations regarding the misuse of antibiotics.

Abstract Introduction To reduce the high prevalence of cervical cancers among the Bangladeshi women, the Government of Bangladesh established a national cervical cancer screening programme in 2005 for women aged 30 to 60 years. The District Health Information System Version 2 (DHIS2) based electronic aggregated data collection system is used since the year 2013. This study summarises data from the year 2014 to 2022 to assess the effectiveness of the electronic data collection system in understanding the outcome of the screening programme. Methods This is a descriptive study based on secondary data extracted in MS Excel from the DHIS2-based electronic repository of the national cervical cancer screening programme of Bangladesh. The respondents were women aged 30–60 years, screened for cervical cancer using VIA (Visual Inspection of cervix with Acetic acid) method in 465 government health facilities. The data were collected on the participants’ residential location, month and year of screening, name and type of health facilities performing VIA, and VIA screening results. Results The national screening programme reported a total 3.36 million VIA tests from 465 government hospitals in 8 years (2014 to 2022). The national average VIA-positivity rate was 3.6%, which varied from 1.4 to 9.5% among the districts. This national screening programme witnessed an exponential growth, year after year, with 83.3% increase in VIA test from 2014 to 2022. The primary and the secondary care hospitals were the highest collective contributors of VIA tests (86.2%) and positive cases (77.8%). The VIA-positivity rates in different hospital types varied widely, 7.0% in the medical university hospital, 5.7% in the medical college hospitals, 3.9% in the district/general hospitals, and 3.0% in the upazila health complexes. Conclusions A national cervical cancer screening programme using VIA method and a DHIS2-based electronic data collection backbone, is effective, sustainable, and useful to understand the screening coverage, VIA positivity rate and geographic distribution of the participants and case load to initiate policy recommendations and actions. Decentralization of the screening programme and more efforts at the primary and secondary care level is required to increase screening performances.

The transportation sector is one among the key sources of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) leading to climate change and global warming. Energy transition through electrified transportation is one of the solutions to tackle the issues. Electric vehicles (EVs) offer significant environmental and economic advantages against the conventional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles. EVs are called mobility loads and their connectivity to the utility grid for charging is unpredictable. The large penetration of such unpredictable loads into the utility grid will lead to undesirable impacts on the utility service. This paper highlights the importance of managing and optimizing the charging schedules. The optimization of EV charging has diverse aspects, and the perspectives of EV charging differ among consumers, aggregators, and utility services. Proper planning and management of EV charging is essential to achieve harmony amongst these stakeholders. A comprehensive review on the objectives of electric vehicle charging optimization from various perspectives is presented and discussed in this paper. EV charging optimization techniques including mathematical programming, meta heuristics algorithms and machine learning techniques are explored. The main objectives, constraints, strength, and limitations of different charging optimization techniques are analyzed in detail. A brief discussion on the communication strategies for data exchange in EV charging framework is presented and the need for a communication security constrained EV charging scheduling is also emphasized.

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) has been the primary drug used in chemotherapy for colorectal carcinoma, and localizing the drug would be effective in avoiding its side effects and improving therapeutic outcomes. One approach to achieve this is by encapsulating the drug in microbeads. Alginate microbeads, in particular, exhibit promising pH-sensitive properties, making them an attractive option for colon targeting. Thus, the main aim of this study is to formulate and characterize 5-FU-encapsulated alginate microbeads as a pH-sensitive drug delivery system for controlled release in the gastrointestinal tract. In this study, the alginate microbeads encapsulating 5-FU was manufactured using electrospray methods. This method offers the advantages of promoting the formulation of uniformly small-sized microbeads with improved performance in terms of swelling and diffusion rates. The size and shape of the 5-FU microbeads are 394.23 ± 3.077 µm and have a spherical factor of 0.026 ± 0.022, respectively, which are considered acceptable and indicative of a spherical shape. The microbeads' encapsulation efficiency was found to be 69.65 ± 0.18%, which is considered high in comparison to other literature. The attenuated total reflectance - Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) data confirmed the complexation of sodium alginate with calcium ions, along with the encapsulation of 5-FU in the microbeads matrix. The 5-FU microbeads displayed pH-dependent swelling, exhibiting less swelling in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) than in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF). Additionally, the release of 5-FU from the microbeads is pH-dependent, with the cumulative percentage drug release being higher in simulated intestinal fluid than in SGF. The data indicate that the 5-FU microbeads can be utilized for the delivery of 5-FU in colon-targeted therapy, potentially leading to improved tumor treatment.

Abstract Background and Aims Antibiotic resistance presents a significant global public health challenge, particularly for urinary tract infections (UTIs), and is notably severe in developing countries. Surveillance of the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of UTI‐causing bacteria is crucial for effective treatment selection. This study aimed to analyze these patterns in bacteria isolated from the urine samples of patients at Mughda Medical College Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Methods A retrospective study (January 2019 to December 2020) at Mugdha Medical College and Hospital, Dhaka, examined clinical and laboratory data from patients with positive urine cultures (≥105 CFU/mL). The study classified patients into four age groups: children (1–50 years). The standard Kirby‐Bauer method was used to assess antibiotic sensitivity to 28 common antibiotics. Results Among 243 positive urine cultures in both community‐ and hospital‐acquired UTIs, Escherichia coli was the most common uropathogen (65.84%), followed by Klebsiella spp. (12.34%), Enterococcus spp. (8.23%), and other types of bacteria. Conclusion Old adults are particularly vulnerable to UTIs, with E. coli being the predominant causative agent in the study region. The observed antimicrobial resistance patterns underscore the necessity of judicious antibiotic selection to effectively treat UTIs across different age groups.

Abstract Background Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) or sugary drinks may reduce or even eliminate the household income allocation for other essential commodities. Reducing expenditure for consumption of other household commodities is known as the crowding-out effect of SSB. We aimed to determine the crowding-out effect of SSB expenditure on other household commodities. In addition, we also identified the factors influencing the household's decision to purchase of SSBs. Methods We used the logistic regression (logit and multinomial logit models) and the Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR) models. In order to find the probability of a given change in the socio-demographic variables, we also estimated the average marginal effects from the logistic regression. In addition, we regressed the SUR model by gender differences. We used Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) 2016 data to estimate our chosen econometric models. HIES is nationally representative data on the household level across the country and is conducted using a multistage random sampling method by covering 46,075 households. Results The findings from the logit model describe that the greater proportion of male members, larger household size, household heads with higher education, profession, having a refrigerator, members living outside of the house, and households with higher income positively affect the decision of purchasing SSB. However, the determinants vary with the various types of SSB. The unadjusted crowding out effect shows that expenditure on SSB or sugar-added drinks crowds out the household expenditure on food, clothing, housing, and energy items. On the other hand, the adjusted crowding out effect crowds out the spending on housing, education, transportation, and social and state responsibilities. Conclusion Although the household expenditure on beverages and sugar-added drinks is still moderate (around 2% of monthly household expenditure), the increased spending on beverages and sugar-added drinks is a concern due to the displacement of household expenditure for basic commodities such as food, clothing, housing, education, and energy. Therefore, evidence-based policies to regulate the sale and consumption of SSB are required for a healthy nation.

Introduction COVID-19 has caused severe disruption to clinical services in Bangladesh but the extent of this, and the impact on healthcare professionals is unclear. We aimed to assess the perceived levels of anxiety, depression and burnout among doctors and nurses during COVID-19 pandemic.Methods We undertook an online survey using RedCap, directed at doctors and nurses across four institutions in Bangladesh (The Sheikh Russel Gastro Liver Institute & Hospital (SRNGIH), Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Mugda Medical College Hospital (MMCH) and M Abdur Rahim Medical College (MARMC) Hospital). We collected information on demographics, awareness of well-being services, COVID-19-related workload, as well as anxiety, depression and burnout using two validated questionnaires: the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI).Results Of the 3000 participants approached, we received responses from 2705 (90.2%). There are two main ways to discover or design small drug molecules. The first involves fine-tuning existing molecules or commercially successful drugs through quantitative structure-activity relationships and virtual screening. The second approach involves generating new molecules through de novo drug design or inverse quantitative structure-activity relationship. Both methods aim to get a drug molecule with the best pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles. However, bringing a new drug to market is an expensive and time-consuming endeavor, with the average cost being estimated at around $2.5 billion. One of the biggest challenges is screening the vast number of potential drug candidates to find one that is both safe and effective. The development of artificial intelligence in recent years has been phenomenal, ushering in a revolution in many fields. The field of pharmaceutical sciences has also significantly benefited from multiple applications of artificial intelligence, especially drug discovery projects. Artificial intelligence models are finding use in molecular property prediction, molecule generation, virtual screening, synthesis planning, repurposing, among others. Lately, generative artificial intelligence has gained popularity across domains for its ability to generate entirely new data, such as images, sentences, audios, videos, novel chemical molecules, etc. Generative artificial intelligence has also delivered promising results in drug discovery and development. This review article delves into the fundamentals and framework of various generative artificial intelligence models in the context of drug discovery via de novo drug design approach. Various basic and advanced models have been discussed, along with their recent applications. The review also explores recent examples and advances in the generative artificial intelligence approach, as well as the challenges and ongoing efforts to fully harness the potential of generative artificial intelligence in generating novel drug molecules in a faster and more affordable manner. Some clinical-level assets generated form generative artificial intelligence have also been discussed in this review to show the ever-increasing application of artificial intelligence in drug discovery through commercial partnerships.

The increasing popularity of multimedia-based classes (MMCs) can be attributed to their efficacy and the favorable reception they have received from students. Bangladeshi educational institutions face challenges to incorporate multimedia-based classes (MMCs) due to several inside and outside barriers relative to teachers, but there is a little literary work on the challenges faced by teachers in Bangladeshi government college context as well as students’ perception on multimedia-based classes. Bangladeshi government college teachers like Cumilla Victoria Government College (CVGC) face a number of challenges to incorporate MMCs. Solutions are urgently needed to improve the teaching-learning environment of Bangladeshi Government Colleges. For this purpose 9 teachers and 9 students of CVGC were chosen by following qualitative research approach. Case study and FGD were done into both groups of respondents. Besides those, observation in classroom was done by the researcher. The study discloses that the teachers face a number of challenges to use multimedia in classroom. The major challenges have been found as inappropriate classrooms, lack of efficiency of teachers on multimedia content development, lack of proper steps from authorities and large number of students in classrooms. Both teachers and students acknowledge that utilizing multimedia in teaching-learning is the most effective approach to foster long-lasting connection within classroom settings. Additionally, it has been observed that MMCs have the potential to exhibit enhanced performance. The solutions to the challenges should be viewed from all levels like personal to administrative levels for ensuring the quality education of competitive world.

This work revealed the investigation of the Casson nanofluid flow's MHD (magneto-hydrodynamic) unstable boundary layer characteristics in the simultaneous transmission of thermoelectric and radiation on a stretched sheet. On MHD Newtonian and non-Newtonian (Casson) nanofluid flows, the cumulative impact of radiation and thermoelectricity has been addressed. Thermal radiation, Casson nanofluids, and MHD are pivotal in engineering and industry, transforming applications like heat exchangers, nuclear power plants, thermal energy storage, and advanced drug delivery systems. The problem-related partial differential equations have been formulated with boundary layer approximation. The boundary layer equations have been changed into dimensionless form with the help of appropriate dimensionless variables and parameters. Finite difference techniques have been employed to get the numerical solution via the FORTRAN 6.6a programming algorithm, and the numerical solutions have been illustrated graphically with the support of Tecplot-360 software. The consequences of the numerous parameters have been investigated using a variety of figures, with the amounts of the various parameters being revised. The simultaneous effects of thermoelectric and radiation on primary velocity, secondary velocity, and temperature profiles have been presented and discussed with critical physical properties such as skin friction in addition to Nusselt number. The combined effects of thermoelectric and radiation on streamlines and isotherms have been illustrated with line and contour flood views. The most significant finding is that the collective influence of thermoelectric and thermal radiation impacts promotes the physical phenomena of non-Newtonian (Casson) fluid flow comparatively more than Newtonian fluid flow. For the purpose of creating effective procedures, forecasting flow patterns, and guaranteeing product performance in a variety of industries, it is crucial to explain the Casson fluids. This model can also aid in blood flow simulation and risk assessment for thrombosis and other cardiovascular diseases.

Optimal capital structure is a key tool to take advantage of the trade-off between firm performance and risk. Based on this, we examine how optimal capital structure influences corporate performance and risk exposure. We use a strong-balanced panel of 3,344 firm-year observations from 10 different OECDcountries for 2006–2016. Results reveal that firms having short-term debt normally experience high accounting-based performance while lowering market-based performance, firms using long-term and total debt are largely exposed to decreased accounting and market-based performance. The higher the long-term and total debt, the greater the chances that firms become vulnerable to insolvency risk. Findings are robust across alternative indicators of capital structure, firm performance and risk, alternative model development and the two-step system GMM estimator to control endogeneity issues. This research will be of importance to firm managers and policymakers in designing an appropriate capital structure for maximizing firm performance while minimizing debt-taking risks.

Cumilla Sadar Dakshin region is highly diverse in respect to land types, topography, agro-ecology, land-use pattern, cropping systems and crop variability & variety. Agricultural development of the region largely depends on the reliable and comprehensive statistics of the existing cropping cultivation and its related system adopted by the farmers. To investigate the homestead vegetable production and its impact on family nutrition, food security, income generation as well as involvement of female members a survey study was conducted at Cumilla Sadar Dakshin during 2019. A total of 150 selected homesteads were surveyed for this purpose through developed questionnaire and focus group discussion. Both primary and secondary data has been collected from different sources to fulfill the objectives of the study. The results of this study indicated that the farmer’s age, marital status, education level, farm size, source of income, women participation etc. Farmer’s knowledge and farming experiences, perception and attitude differs on different demographic conditions like: age, sex, education, farm size, training which significantly influence the adoption of modern technologies provided by different organizations. The results also showed that women contribution in homestead vegetable production is high in medium farmer’s category 41.67% and low in small farmers 36.36% respectively. The highest number of total vegetables was produced by the medium farmer (63,732 kg/year) followed by small (39,445 kg/year) and marginal farmer (25,514 kg/year). This study provides some recommendation which might impacts on betterment of farmers’ occupational and socio-economic condition by establishing proper policy and legislation both in local and national level administration as well as agricultural extension.

Traditional external light-based Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)’s application is limited to the surface and minimal thickness tumors because of the inefficiency of light in penetrating deep-seated tumors. To address this, the emerging field of radiation-activated PDT (radioPDT) uses X-rays to trigger photosensitizer-containing nanoparticles (NPs). A key consideration in radioPDT is the energy transfer efficiency from X-rays to the photosensitizer for ultimately generating the phototoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, we developed a new variant of pegylated poly-lactic-co-glycolic (PEG-PLGA) encapsulated nanoscintillators (NSCs) along with a new, highly efficient ruthenium-based photosensitizer (Ru/radioPDT). Characterization of this NP via transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma mass-spectroscopy showed an NP size of 120 nm, polydispersity index (PDI) of less than 0.25, high NSCs loading efficiency over 90% and in vitro accumulation within the cytosolic structure of endoplasmic reticulum and lysosome. The therapeutic efficacy of Ru/radioPDT was determined using PC3 cell viability and clonogenic assays. Ru/radioPDT exhibited minimal cell toxicity until activated by radiation to induce significant cancer cell kill over radiation alone. Compared to protoporphyrin IX-mediated radioPDT (PPIX/radioPDT), Ru/radioPDT showed higher capacity for singlet oxygen generation, maintaining a comparable cytotoxic effect on PC3 cells.

Background: Training improves dispensing behavior of drug dispensers in low- and middle-income countries. Between 2018 and 2020, a total of 5,059 Grade C pharmacists, who completed a 3-month training course for availing a “Grade C pharmacist certificate” were trained on Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) in 11 districts in Bangladesh by Management Sciences for Health (MSH) under Better Health in Bangladesh (BHB) project. We assessed the impact of GPP among trained Grade C pharmacists under the BHB project compared to those who did not receive GPP training under the BHB project (non-trained), and explored the major challenges towards achieving GPP.Methods: We created a database of trained Grade C pharmacists provided by MSH and randomly selected the trained Grade C pharmacists for recruitment following consent. We created another database of the non-trained Grade C pharmacist who were deployed within a 1-km radius of a trained Grade C pharmacist, and randomly recruited one non-trained against one trained Grade C pharmacist. A semi structured questionnaire was administered to obtain information about knowledge of GPP, including guidelines of dispensing medicines, temperature maintenance, medicine storage, counseling customers and labeling medicines. Dispensing behavior was directly observed following a structured tool. Chi-square test (for categorical variables) and independent sample t-tests (for continuous variables) were applied for comparison between the trained and the non-trained Grade C pharmacists. A logistic regression model was applied to explore an association between knowledge and practice between the two groups.Results: Between February and March 2021, 220 trained and 220 non-trained Grade C pharmacists were recruited. Mean age (SD) of the participants was 41 years (10.5) and 98.4% were male. Compared to the non-trained, the trained Grade C pharmacists had better knowledge about the guidelines of dispensing medicines (97.7% vs 89.5%, p < 0.001), temperature maintenance (91.8% vs 45.5%, p = 0.001), medicine storage (92.3% vs 40.5%, p = 0.001) counseling customers (99.5% vs 92.3%, p < .001) and labeling medicines (91.0% vs 80%, p < 0.001). General dispensing behavior was observed to be better among the trained than the non-trained with labeling of medicines (63.2% vs 53.4%, p = 0.038), counseling customers (39.1% vs 28.6%, p = 0.021) and using a room thermometer for maintaining ambient temperature in the medicine shops (56.8% vs26.8%, p < 0.001). Bad behavior of the customers (39.5%) and lack of GPP knowledge among Grade C pharmacists (28.6%) were recognized to be challenges towards achieving GPP in Bangladesh.Conclusion: Training led to better knowledge and practices about dispensing medicines among Grade C pharmacists in Bangladesh. Periodic training may promote achieving GPP in Bangladesh.

The microbiological use of cellulose is a significant aspect in achieving the highest possible material flow in the environment. This study aimed at isolation, identification and biochemical characterization of bacteria with cellulase activity from cellulose samples. Cellulase enzyme has wide applications in various industries including food industry, agriculture, textile, detergent, pulp and paper, biofuel production, brewing and biorefinery etc. In the present study, cellulolytic bacterium Pseudomonas sp was isolated from rumen fluid of cattle was collected from Kajitula slaughter house, Sylhet. This bacterial isolate was identified by morphological, biochemical and physiochemical characteristics. Cellulase production by the bacteria was optimized. Optimum cellulase was produced by Pseudomonas sp which was observed under different pH, temperature and incubation period. The highest production of cellulase enzyme by this bacterium was monitored at pH 7.0 for 48 h under 3 days of cultivation at 40°C. The enzyme activity was observed at pH 7.0 with cellulosic filter paper for 5 days incubation and its maximum activity was noted at 48 h. The result of study shows that the Pseudomonas sp is a good producer of extra cellular cellulase enzyme which can be also beneficial for the degradation of cellulosic pollutants of environment. Alginate is a natural biopolymer widely studied for pharmaceutical applications due to its biocompatibility, low toxicity, and mild gelation abilities. This review summarizes recent advances in alginate-based encapsulation systems for targeted drug delivery. Alginate formulations like microparticles, nanoparticles, microgels, and composites fabricated by methods including ionic gelation, emulsification, spray drying, and freeze drying enable tailored drug loading, enhanced stability, and sustained release kinetics. Alginate microspheres prepared by spray drying or ionic gelation provide gastric protection and colon-targeted release of orally delivered drugs. Alginate nanoparticles exhibit enhanced cellular uptake and tumor-targeting capabilities through the enhanced permeation and retention effect. Crosslinked alginate microgels allow high drug loading and controlled release profiles. Composite alginate gels with cellulose, chitosan, or inorganic nanomaterials display improved mechanical properties, mucoadhesion, and tunable release kinetics. Alginate-based wound dressings containing antimicrobial nanoparticles promote healing of burns and chronic wounds through sustained topical delivery. Although alginate is well-established as a pharmaceutical excipient, more extensive in vivo testing is needed to assess clinical safety and efficacy of emerging formulations prior to human trials. Future opportunities include engineered systems combining stimuli-responsiveness, active targeting, and diagnostic capabilities. In summary, this review discusses recent advances in alginate encapsulation techniques for oral, transdermal, and intravenous delivery, with an emphasis on approaches enabling targeted and sustained drug release for enhanced therapeutic outcomes.

In diesel engines, emission formation inside the combustion chamber is a complex phenomenon. The combustion events inside the chamber occur in microseconds, affecting the overall engine performance and emissions characteristics. This study opted for using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate the combustion patterns and how these events affect nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. In this study, a diesel engine model with a flat combustion chamber (FCC) was developed for the simulation. The simulation result of the heat release rate (HRR) and cylinder pressure was validated with the experimental test data (the engine test was conducted at 1500 rpm at full load conditions). The validated model and its respective boundary conditions were used to investigate the effect of modified combustion chamber profiles on NOx emissions. Modified chambers, such as a bathtub combustion chamber (BTCC) and a shallow depth chamber (SCC), were developed, and their combustion events were analysed with respect to the FCC. This study revealed that combustion events such as fuel distribution, unburnt mass fractions, temperature and turbulent zones directly impact NOx emissions. The modified chambers controlled the spread of combustion and provided better fuel distribution, improving engine performance and combustion rates. The SCC (63.2 bar) showed peak pressure rates compared to the FCC (63.02 bar) and BTCC (62.72 bar). This study concluded that the SCC showed better results than other chambers. This study further recommends conducting lean fuel mixture combustion with chamber modifications and optimising fuel spray, such as by adjusting the fuel injection profile, spray angle and injection timing, which has a better tendency to create complete combustion.

Turmeric contains curcumin, a naturally occurring compound with noted anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that may help fight cancer. Curcumin is readily available, nontoxic, and inexpensive. At high doses, it has minimal side effects, suggesting it is safe for human use. However, curcumin has extremely poor bioavailability and biodistribution, which further hamper its clinical applications. It is commonly administered through oral and transdermal routes in different forms, where the particle size is one of the most common barriers that decreases its absorption through biological membranes on the targeted sites and limits its clinical effectiveness. There are many studies ongoing to overcome this problem. All of this motivated us to conduct this review that discusses the fabrication of polymer-based curcumin-loaded formulation as an advanced drug delivery system and addresses different approaches to overcoming the existing barriers and improving its bioavailability and biodistribution to enhance the therapeutic effects against cancer and other diseases.

Energy and humanity are superimposed. Its importance to humankind and indispensable nature to the world cannot be overemphasized. Public institutions and households need energy to carry out their daily activities. The increase in the demand for energy in public institutions can be traced to technological advancement, which has resulted in a sharp rise in energy consumption, increasing the energy monthly utility bill astronomically. These have put pressure on public institutions in Nigeria and across the globe, as most are heavily indebted to energy companies. Due to constant electric power failure in Nigeria, public institutions rely heavily on diesel generators to argument their daily energy need. Cost minimization and sustainable clean energy have become a priority for the managers of our public institutions. This study was carried out to establish the exact amount of energy consumption at the Federal Polytechnic Bida, Nigeria, and fashion out ways of reducing the cost burden for the institution.The study was achieved by installing "Efergy Meter" to understudy the energy audit of the institution. Based on the result obtained, the exact amount of energy consumption was established. The solar photovoltaic (P.V.) system was considered a clean and cost-effective option for our public institutions in the long term.

Congenital CD59 deficiency is a recently described rare autosomal recessive disease associated with CD59 gene mutations that lead to deficient or dysfunctional CD59 protein on the cell surface. The disease is characterized by the early onset of chronic hemolysis, relapsing peripheral demyelinating neuropathy, and recurrent ischemic strokes. To date, there are 14 patients with 4 exon mutations reported globally. A young boy with early onset peripheral neuropathy and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome is presented. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) identified a homozygous splice site variant in intron 1 of the CD59 gene (c.67 + 1G > T). This variant alters a consensus donor splicing site. Quantitative reverse transcription PCR showed that CD59 mRNA expression in the patient is significantly reduced to 0.017-fold compared to the controls. Flow cytometry showed the lack of CD59 protein on the surface of the patient’s red blood cells. This variant is the first splice site mutation reported to be associated with congenital CD59 deficiency.

The modernization theory forecasts a sharp declining effect of institutionalized religion on human behavior owing to the extensive economic development. However, this prediction is rejected and proved that religious values and beliefs have a pervasive influence on individual conduct. Based on this salient evidence, we examine the influence of religious social norms on bank earnings management behavior with regard to ongoing economic development. We use 20,715 bank-year observations from 1318 listed banks of eight geographical regions. We, further, employ an updated dataset of 2007–2021 to resemble the economic prosperity time period. Our study discards the prediction of the modernization theory and reveals that banks located in countries with high religiosity are less likely to manage their reported earnings. While comparing conventional banks with Islamic ones, conventional banks are found to be less prone to the earnings management practice than that of their Islamic counterparts. We also find religiosity to have a greater magnitude of effect on the accounting manipulation in the crisis period than in the post-crisis one. The cross-regional differences in religious values bring differential effects on this unethical practice. Our results are robust with the alternative measures of earnings management and alternative model specifications.

Background. Although the monkeypox virus-associated illness was previously confined to Africa, recently, it has started to spread across the globe and become a significant threat to human lives. Hence, this study was designed to identify the B and T cell epitopes and develop an epitope-based peptide vaccine against this virus’s cell surface binding protein through an in silico approach to combat monkeypox-associated diseases. Results. The analysis revealed that the cell surface binding protein of the monkeypox virus contains 30 B cell and 19 T cell epitopes within the given parameter. Among the T cell epitopes, epitope “ILFLMSQRY” was found to be one of the most potential peptide vaccine candidates. The docking analysis revealed an excellent binding affinity of this epitope with the human receptor HLA-B∗15:01 with a very low binding energy (-7.5 kcal/mol). Conclusion. The outcome of this research will aid the development of a T cell epitope-based peptide vaccine, and the discovered B and T cell epitopes will facilitate the creation of other epitope and multi-epitope-based vaccines in the future. This research will also serve as a basis for further in vitro and in vivo analysis to develop a vaccine that is effective against the monkeypox virus.

The growing interest in hydrogen production arises from its higher energy density, making it an attractive option for energy storage and fuel applications. However, hydrogen production relies heavily on fossil fuels, producing substantial CO2 emissions. Meanwhile, the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), which constitutes a significant portion of solid waste, predominantly ends up in landfills, leading to methane emissions. Harnessing hydrogen from OFMSW offers an opportunity to offset methane emissions and promote cleaner hydrogen production compared to conventional methods. Various pretreatment methods and production techniques have been explored for hydrogen production from OFMSW, including bio-photolysis, photo-fermentation, microbial electrolysis, and dark fermentation. This study presents a comparative analysis of these methods, evaluating their efficiency, scalability, and potential challenges for hydrogen fuel production from OFMSW. By exploring these avenues, this study found the current hydrogen fuel production scenarios where OFMSW contributes a small portion due to the limited yield. Microbial electrolysis can help to improve the yield and feedstock quality. This study recommends further investigation into the advancement of sustainable hydrogen production and provides insights into overcoming the obstacles associated with this promising field.

Plasmalogens (Pls) levels are reported to be altered in several neurological and metabolic diseases. Identification of sn-1 fatty alcohols and sn-2 fatty acids of different Pls species is necessary to determine the roles and mechanisms of action of Pls in different diseases. Previously, full-scan tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) was used for this purpose but is not effective for low-abundance Pls species. Recently, multiplexed selected reaction monitoring MS (SRM/MS) was found to be more selective and sensitive than conventional full-scan MS/MS for the identification of low-abundance compounds. In the present study, we developed a liquid chromatography (LC)-targeted multiplexed SRM/MS system for the identification and quantification of different Pls choline (Pls-PC) and Pls ethanolamine (Pls-PE) species. We determined five precursor-product ion transitions to identify sn-1 and sn-2 fragments of each Pls species. Consequently, sn-1 and sn-2 fatty acyl chains of 22 Pls-PC and 55 Pls-PE species were identified in mouse brain samples. Among them, some species had C20:0 and C20:1 fatty alcohols at the sn-1 position. For quantification of Pls species in mouse brain samples, a single SRM transition was employed. Thus, our results suggest that the LC-targeted multiplexed SRM/MS system is very sensitive for the identification and quantification of low-abundance lipids such as Pls, and is thus expected to make a significant contribution to basic and clinical research in this field in the future.

Breast cancer comprises 30% of all cancer cases among the world’s women population. MicroRNAs are small, endogenous, non-coding RNAs that regulate cell proliferating and apoptotic pathways by modulating expressions of related genes. Phytochemicals like epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) are known to have a chemotherapeutic effect on cancer often through the regulation of microRNAs. The aim is to find out the key known and novel miRNAs, which are controlled by EGCG in breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) revealed 1,258 known and 330 novel miRNAs from untreated and 83 μM EGCG (IC50 value of EGCG) treated cells. EGCG modulated 873 known and 47 novel miRNAs in the control vs. treated sample. The hypothesis of EGCG being a great modulator of miRNAs that significantly control important cancer-causing pathways has been established by analyzing with Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Protein Analysis Through Evolutionary Relationships (PANTHER) database. Validation of known and novel miRNA expression differences in untreated vs. treated cells was done using qPCR. From this study, a few notable miRNAs were distinguished that can be used as diagnostics as well as prognostic markers for breast cancer.

This study aims to increase the aqueous solubility of ciprofloxacin (CPN) to improve oral bioavailability. This was carried out by formulating a stable formulation of the Self-Emulsifying Drug Delivery System (SEDDS) using various ratios of lipid/oil, surfactant, and co-surfactant. A pseudo-ternary phase diagram was designed to find an area of emulsification. Eight formulations (F1-CPN–F8-CPN) containing oleic acid oil, silicone oil, olive oil, castor oil, sunflower oil, myglol oil, polysorbate-80, polysorbate-20, PEO-200, PEO-400, PEO-600, and PG were formulated. The resultant SEDDS were subjected to thermodynamic study, size, and surface charge studies to improve preparation. Improved composition of SEDDS F5-CPN containing 40% oil, 60% polysorbate-80, and propylene glycol (Smix ratio 6: 1) were thermodynamically stable emulsions having droplet size 202.6 nm, charge surface -13.9 mV, and 0.226 polydispersity index (PDI). Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) studies revealed that the optimized formulation and drug showed no interactions. Scanning electron microscope tests showed the droplets have an even surface and spherical shape. It was observed that within 5 h, the concentration of released CPN from optimized formulations F5-CPN was 93%. F5-CPN also showed a higher antibacterial action against S. aurous than free CPN. It shows that F5-CPN is a better formulation with a good release and high antibacterial activity.

Abstract Background In Bangladesh, a poorly functioning national system of registering deaths and determining their causes leaves the country without important information on which to inform health programming, particularly for the 85% of deaths that occur in the community. In 2017, an improved death registration system and automated verbal autopsy (VA) were introduced to 13 upazilas to assess the utility of VA as a routine source of policy-relevant information and to identify leading causes of deaths (COD) in rural Bangladesh. Methods Data from 22,535 VAs, collected in 12 upazilas between October 2017 and August 2019, were assigned a COD using the SmartVA Analyze 2.0 computer algorithm. The plausibility of the VA results was assessed using a series of demographic and epidemiological checks in the Verbal Autopsy Interpretation, Performance and Evaluation Resource (VIPER) software tool. Results Completeness of community death reporting was 65%. The vast majority (85%) of adult deaths were due to non-communicable diseases, with ischemic heart disease, stroke and chronic respiratory disease comprising about 60% alone. Leading COD were broadly consistent with Global Burden of Disease study estimates. Conclusions Routine VA collection using automated methods is feasible, can produce plausible results and provides critical information on community COD in Bangladesh. Routine VA and VIPER have potential application to countries with weak death registration systems.

Abstract Background National forest inventory and forest monitoring systems are more important than ever considering continued global degradation of trees and forests. These systems are especially important in a country like Bangladesh, which is characterised by a large population density, climate change vulnerability and dependence on natural resources. With the aim of supporting the Government’s actions towards sustainable forest management through reliable information, the Bangladesh Forest Inventory (BFI) was designed and implemented through three components: biophysical inventory, socio-economic survey and remote sensing-based land cover mapping. This article documents the approach undertaken by the Forest Department under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change to establish the BFI as a multipurpose, efficient, accurate and replicable national forest assessment. The design, operationalization and some key results of the process are presented. Methods The BFI takes advantage of the latest and most well-accepted technological and methodological approaches. Importantly, it was designed through a collaborative process which drew from the experience and knowledge of multiple national and international entities. Overall, 1781 field plots were visited, 6400 households were surveyed, and a national land cover map for the year 2015 was produced. Innovative technological enhancements include a semi-automated segmentation approach for developing the wall-to-wall land cover map, an object-based national land characterisation system, consistent estimates between sample-based and mapped land cover areas, use of mobile apps for tree species identification and data collection, and use of differential global positioning system for referencing plot centres. Results Seven criteria, and multiple associated indicators, were developed for monitoring progress towards sustainable forest management goals, informing management decisions, and national and international reporting needs. A wide range of biophysical and socioeconomic data were collected, and in some cases integrated, for estimating the indicators. Conclusions The BFI is a new information source tool for helping guide Bangladesh towards a sustainable future. Reliable information on the status of tree and forest resources, as well as land use, empowers evidence-based decision making across multiple stakeholders and at different levels for protecting natural resources. The integrated socio-economic data collected provides information about the interactions between people and their tree and forest resources, and the valuation of ecosystem services. The BFI is designed to be a permanent assessment of these resources, and future data collection will enable monitoring of trends against the current baseline. However, additional institutional support as well as continuation of collaboration among national partners is crucial for sustaining the BFI process in future.

Abstract Background The fruits of P. macrocarpa have long been used as a traditional Malay medicinal herb for hundreds of years. Intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of streptozotocin (STZ) (65 mg/kg) was used to induce diabetes in rats confirmed by an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). The ethanol extract of P. macrocarpa (EEPM) fruits at 100 and 200 mg/kg were given orally for 35 days, glibenclamide. In total, 0.5 mg/kg served as a positive control. Results The present toxicity study suggests that the EEPM fruits are non-toxic. In an OGTT, the EEPM at 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg and glibenclamide (0.5 mg/kg) reduced the blood glucose level (hyperglycemia due to glucose load 2 g/kg p.o.) significantly after 2 h of oral administration, when compared to the diabetic control. Repeated oral administration of EEPM daily for up to 35 days exhibited significant antidiabetic activity in STZ-induced diabetic rats compared to the diabetic control. At the end of 35 days of treatment, the 200 mg/kg (EEPM) dose was found to be more effective than the 100 and 50 mg/kg (EEPM) doses and blood glucose levels decreased from 392.66 ± 3.20 to 174.33 ± 4.32 mg/dl (p ˂ 0.01). In contrast, on day 35, the blood glucose levels of the normal control, drug control, and diabetic control were 132.16 ± 5.79, 134.33 ± 7.18 (p ˂ 0.01), and 514.83 ± 7.96 respectively. From histology analysis, the pancreases of the diabetic control were granulated and dilated islet cells, whereas in the drug control they appeared granulated, without dilation and important hyper plasticity of islets. The treatment groups (EEPM 100 and 200 mg/kg) also showed granulated pancreatic islets and prominent hyper plasticity islets. Light micrographs in various regions of rat kidney tissue from the treatment groups showed absence of matrix expansion and glomerular basement membrane thickening, suggesting it became normal histoarchitecture of the renal. Biochemical aspects in treating animals’ all serum analytic parameters were almost similar to the drug control group with the exception of the 50 mg/kg treatment group. Conclusion In this way, it may also serve as a good alternative in the present armamentarium of antidiabetic drugs.

Abstract Background Full or partial monosomy of chromosome (chr) 21 is a very rare abnormal cytogenetic finding. It is characterized by variable sizes and deletion breakpoints on the long arm (q) of chr 21 that lead to a broad spectrum of phenotypes that include an increased risk of birth defects, developmental delay and intellectual deficit. Case presentation We report a 37-year-old G1P0 woman initially screened by non-invasive prenatal testing with no positive findings that was followed by an 18-week anatomy scan with a fetal finding of duplication of the superior vena cava (SVC). The medical and family history was otherwise uneventful. After appropriate genetic counseling, amniocentesis was performed to evaluate suspected chromosomal anomalies. Conclusions Interphase fluorescent in situ hybridization revealed loss of one chr 21 signal that was further delineated by chromosomal microarray analysis on uncultured amniocytes as a terminal 10 Mb deletion on chr 21q. Karyotype and microarrays on cultured amniocytes showed two cell lines for a mosaic 21q terminal deletion and monosomy 21. The combined molecular cytogenetics results reported following the ISCN 2016 guideline as mos 46,XX,del(21)(q22)dn[20]/45,XX,-21dn[10].nuc ish(D21S342/D21S341/D21S259x1)[100].arr[GRCh37] 21q11.2q22.12(15412676_36272993)x1~2,21q22.12q22.3(36431283_47612400)x1. Parental chromosomal analysis revealed normal karyotypes. Thus, this was a de novo mosaic full and partial monosomy of chr 21 in a case with SVC duplication. Despite the association of congenital heart disease with monsomy 21 we could not find any published literature or online databases for this cytogenetic abnormality. The patient terminated the pregnancy following the abnormal molecular cytogenetic results due to the possible challenges the baby would face if carried to term.

India is regarded as the world’s largest democratic country. The country is well known for its rich cultural diversity, pluralistic society and inclusive secular democracy. However, the recent political scenario has partially damaged the values of the liberal democracy of India. Since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its parental body Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangha (RSS) have tried to accomplish their goal of Hindu Rashtra. Minorities in the country have been attacked, killed and deprived of their human rights. This article examines this trend by focusing on the growing intolerance during the Modi regime and its impact on the country’s democracy. It also discusses how the BJP at the central government and many other states, directly and indirectly, narrow down the space of civil society and media to fuel majoritarian agenda. Based on its findings, the article argues that in the Narendra Modi regime Indian political culture has been undergoing a shift from inclusive democracy to a narrow process of democracy. By doing so, it contributes to the studies on the rise of right-wing populism in some countries including India in the contemporary world.

This study numerically analyses the effects of chamber modifications to investigate the improvement of in-cylinder combustion characteristics of the diesel engine using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. Five different modified chambers, namely, the double swirl combustion chamber (DSCC), bathtub combustion chamber (BTCC), double toroidal re-entrant combustion chamber (DTRCC), shallow depth combustion chamber (SCC), and stepped bowl combustion chamber (SBCC) were developed and compared with a reference flat combustion chamber (FCC). The effects of chamber modifications on temperature formation, velocity distribution, injection profiles, and in-cylinder turbulent motions (swirl and tumble ratio) were investigated. During the compression stroke, near top dead centre, the SCC showed a peak temperature of 970 K, followed by the FCC (968 K), SBCC (967 K), and DTRCC (748 K to 815 K). The DSCC and the SCC showed a high swirl ratio above 0.6, whereas the DTRCC and the BTCC showed a high tumble ratio of approximately 0.4. This study found that the SCC, BTCC, and DSCC have better combustion rates than the FCC in terms of temperature, heat release rate, and velocity distribution. However, the DTRCC showed poor temperature formation rates and rapid heat release rates (approx. 150 J/°CA), which can lead to rapid combustion and knocking tendencies. In conclusion, the DSCC and the SCC showed better combustion rates than the other chambers. In addition, turbulent motions inside the chambers avoided combustion in crevice regions. This study recommends avoiding chambers with wider bowls in order to prevent uneven combustion across the cylinder. Furthermore, split bowls such as the DSCC, along with adjusted injection rates, can provide better results in terms of combustion.

As the Urtica dioica L. whole plant’s essential oil has presented significant multiple activities, it was therefore evaluated using the GC–MS technique. This essential oil was investigated for its antioxidant, phytotoxic, and antibacterial activities in vitro. The GC–MS analysis data assisted in the identification of various constituents. The study of the essential oil of U. dioica showed potential antioxidant effects and antibacterial activity against the selected pathogens Escherichia coli -ATCC 9837 (E. coli), Bacillus subtilis-ATCC 6633 (B. subtilis), Staphylococcus aureus-ATCC6538 (S. aureus), Pseudomonas aeruginosa-ATCC 9027 (P. aeruginosa), and Salmonella typhi-ATCC 6539 (S. typhi). The library of 23 phytochemicals was docked by using MOE software, and three top virtual hits with peroxiredoxin protein [PDB ID: 1HD2] and potential target protein [PDB ID: 4TZK] were used; hence, the protein–ligand docking results estimated the best binding conformations and a significant correlation with the experimental analysis, in terms of the docking score and binding interactions with the key residues of the native active binding site. The essential oil in the silico pharmacokinetic profile explained the structure and activity relationships of the selected best hits, and their additional parameters provided insight for further clinical investigations. Therefore, it is concluded that the U. dioica essential oil could be a potent antioxidant and antibacterial agent for aromatherapy through its topical application, if further tested in a laboratory and validated.

The virus responsible for COVID-19 is mutating day by day with more infectious characteristics. With the limited healthcare resources and overburdened medical practitioners, it is almost impossible to contain this virus. The automatic identification of this viral infection from chest X-ray (CXR) images is now more demanding as it is a cheaper and less time-consuming diagnosis option. To that cause, we have applied deep learning (DL) approaches for four-class classification of CXR images comprising COVID-19, normal, lung opacity, and viral pneumonia. At first, we extracted features of CXR images by applying a local binary pattern (LBP) and pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN). Afterwards, we utilized a pattern recognition network (PRN), support vector machine (SVM), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), and k-nearest neighbors (KNN) classifiers on the extracted features to classify aforementioned four-class CXR images. The performances of the proposed methods have been analyzed rigorously in terms of classification performance and classification speed. Among different methods applied to the four-class test images, the best method achieved classification performances with 97.41% accuracy, 94.94% precision, 94.81% recall, 98.27% specificity, and 94.86% F1 score. The results indicate that the proposed method can offer an efficient and reliable framework for COVID-19 detection from CXR images, which could be immensely conducive to the effective diagnosis of COVID-19-infected patients.

Hydrogen is one of the prospective clean energies that could potentially address two pressing areas of global concern, namely energy crises and environmental issues. Nowadays, fossil-based technologies are widely used to produce hydrogen and release higher greenhouse gas emissions during the process. Decarbonizing the planet has been one of the major goals in the recent decades. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to find clean, sustainable, and reliable hydrogen production technologies with low costs and zero emissions. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the hydrogen generation from solar and wind energy sources and observe broad prospects with hybrid renewable energy sources in producing green hydrogen. The study mainly focuses on the critical assessment of solar, wind, and hybrid-powered electrolysis technologies in producing hydrogen. Furthermore, the key challenges and opportunities associated with commercial-scale deployment are addressed. Finally, the potential applications and their scopes are discussed to analyse the important barriers to the overall commercial development of solar-wind-based hydrogen production systems. The study found that the production of hydrogen appears to be the best candidate to be employed for multiple purposes, blending the roles of fuel energy carrier and energy storage modality. Further studies are recommended to find technical and sustainable solutions to overcome the current issues that are identified in this study.

Nanostructured materials have gained much attention in recent engineering and material- science research due to their unique structural makeup, which stands them out from their bulk counterparts. Their novel properties of tiny-size structural elements (molecules or crystallites, clusters) of nanoscale dimensions (1 to 100 nm) make them a perfect material for energy applications. The recent keen interest in nanostructured materials research by academia and industrial experts arises from the unique variable characteristics of increased electrical and thermal conductivity. This occurs as nanostructured materials undergo a transient process from infinite-extended solid to a particle of ascertainable numbers of atoms. The commercial and energy sectors are very interested in developing and expanding simple synthetic pathways for nanostructured-electrocatalysts materials to aid in optimizing the number of active regions. Over the decades, various techniques have been put forward to design and synthesize nanostructured-electrocatalysts materials for electrochemical generation of energy and storage applications. As a result, the design of fuel cells, supercapacitors, and energy-storage devices has advanced significantly. This review provides a comprehensive outlook of various synthesis techniques and highlight the challenges of nanostructured- electrocatalysts materials application in fuel cells. Several synthesis methods are discussed and summarized for enhanced nanomaterial preparation and high product attainment with the sol-gel synthesis method being emphasized. The design methodology for an effective nanostructured electrocatalysts with high efficiency for fuel cells was also discussed.

Objective: To determine the urinary tract infections (UTIs)-causing bacterial profile and antibiotic susceptibility pattern for the proper and complete treatment of UTIs in pregnant women with diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods: We collected 300 urine samples from diabetic and nondiabetic pregnant women at various gestational ages. After isolating and identifying uropathogens, we conducted an antibiotic sensitivity assay against fourteen commonly used antibiotics: amikacin, amoxicillin, ampicillin, azithromycin, cefixime, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefuroxime, ciprofloxacin, co-trimoxazole, gentamicin, levofloxacin, netilmicin, nitrofurantoin. Results: Among the participants, 70% had DM but only 37.3% had positive uropathogen growth. Five gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Enterobacter spp., Citrobacter spp., and Pseudomonas spp.) and 3 gram-positive bacteria (Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp. and Enterococcus spp.) were indentified. Escherichia coli was the most prevalent bacteria (57.1%), followed by Klebsiella spp. (19.6%). In the antibiotic susceptibility assay, we found 96.5% of the isolated organisms were highly susceptible to levofloxacin, 94.2% to netilmicin, 88.2% to nitrofurantoin, 85.1% to amikacin, 79.8% to gentamicin, respectively. On the other hand, 64.8%, 63.6%, 61.8% of the isolates demonstrated high-level resistance to ampicillin, ceftazidime and amoxicillin whereas 38.0%, 37.1%, 33.6%, 30.9% and 30.0% of the organisms were resistant to co-trimoxazole, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, cefuroxime, cefixime, respectivey. Conclusions: Our results suggest that amikacin, levofloxacin, netilmicin, nitrofurantoin, and gentamycin can be used as first-line treatments for UTIs, whether the patient has DM or not. Contrarily, amoxicillin, ampicillin, ceftazidime, azithromycin, and co-trimoxazole should be avoided in treating UTIs.
