The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO or JUNO-TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). Located near a reactor of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant, TAO will measure the reactor antineutrino energy spectrum with an unprecedented energy resolution of < 2 % at 1 MeV. Energy calibration is critical to achieve such a high energy resolution. Using the Automated Calibration Unit (ACU) and the Cable Loop System (CLS), multiple radioactive sources are deployed to various positions in the TAO detector for energy calibration. The residual non-uniformity can be controlled within 0.2%. The energy resolution degradation and energy bias caused by the residual non-uniformity can be controlled within 0.05% and 0.3%, respectively. The uncertainty of the non-linear energy response can be controlled within 0.6% with the radioactive sources of various energies, and could be further improved with cosmogenic 12 B which is produced by the interaction of cosmic muon in the liquid scintillator. Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20 kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. In this work a new readout scheme for scintillator-based detectors, using discrete time differences through a delay line is proposed, reducing the readout channels while maintaining the spatial resolution. A prototype was built using plastic scintillator blocks and MPPC sensors. Currently, the prototype produces discrete distributions with a dispersion < 1. 1 ns which allows discriminating the different positions. The estimated spatial resolution is σ = 1. 456 mm. This value presents a better resolution than that of Time-of-Flight detectors and of the order of Segmented detectors, but uses fewer readout channels. JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV. The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator filling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of 10 - 16 g/g of 238 U and 232 Th requires a large ( ∼ 20 m 3 ) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup. Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric ν e and ν μ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3" PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since ν e and ν μ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination. The main task of the Top Tracker detector of the neutrino reactor experiment Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is to reconstruct and extrapolate atmospheric muon tracks down to the central detector. This muon tracker will help to evaluate the contribution of the cosmogenic background to the signal. The Top Tracker is located above JUNO's water Cherenkov Detector and Central Detector, covering about 60% of the surface above them. The JUNO Top Tracker is constituted by the decommissioned OPERA experiment Target Tracker modules. The technology used consists in walls of two planes of plastic scintillator strips, one per transverse direction. Wavelength shifting fibres collect the light signal emitted by the scintillator strips and guide it to both ends where it is read by multianode photomultiplier tubes. Compared to the OPERA Target Tracker, the JUNO Top Tracker uses new electronics able to cope with the high rate produced by the high rock radioactivity compared to the one in Gran Sasso underground laboratory. Charge-redistribution successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are widely used for their simple architecture, inherent low-power consumption and small footprint. Several techniques aiming to reduce the power consumption, to increase the speed, and to reduce the capacitance spread have been developed, such as splitting the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) capacitor array, and charging and discharging the DAC capacitors in multiple steps. In this paper, a fully differential, low-power, passive reference voltage sharing SAR ADC architecture is presented, along with its theoretical analysis and test results. In this architecture, suitable for low sampling rate and low-resolution applications, the reference voltage is scaled down by successively connecting equally sized capacitors in parallel, allowing the use of small capacitor for its implementation. The implemented 6-bit ADC is one of the smallest ADCs reported in a 180-nm technology, and features a FoM between 30.8 and 39.3 fJ per conversion step without considering the clock generator power consumption. Engineering outreach in a developing country like Chile is a difficult challenge. Different reasons explain a sustained decrease in the number of students enrolling in engineering education in the past years, and a special effort is necessary to reverse this trend. Focusing on teamwork, the non-conventional undergraduate-level course described in this paper represents an opportunity for motivated students in a developing country to focus their abilities in engineering design. In order to make the course more attractive for students, the final project consisted of designing an autonomous robot to compete in a contest. This article reviews experiences associated with this course and the students' design teams over a five-year period. The course methodology is explained, and the results are summarised. The BeamCal detector, one of the calorimeters in the forward region of the International Linear Collider detector, will serve three purposes: ensure hermeticity of the detector for small polar angles, reduce the backscattering from beamstrahlung electron-positron pairs into the detector center, and provide a low-latency signal for beam diagnostics. The BeamCal specifications in terms of noise suppression, signal charge, pulse rate, and occupancy pose unique challenges in the front end and readout electronics design. The Bean–BeamCal instrumentation IC is the integrated circuit under study to fulfill these requirements. To process the signal charge at the International Collider pulse rate, the Bean uses switched-capacitor filters and a slow reset-release technique. Each channel has a 10-bit successive approximation analog-to-digital converter. The Bean also features a fast feedback adder capable of providing a low latency output for beam diagnostic purposes. Ferroelectric (FE) materials are being studied for a variety of applications in memory, logic, and neuromorphic computing, for which predictive models of FE polarization are essential. In this paper, we present a Monte Carlo simulation framework capable of predicting the dynamic, history-dependent response of an FE under arbitrary input waveforms. The simulation is developed by generalizing the physics-based nucleation-limited switching model for polarization reversal in a polycrystalline FE. Measured polarization reversal data from fabricated FE Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 capacitors are used to extract the statistical distribution of FE grains. After parameter extraction, the model is able to predict the dynamics of the FE capacitor without further calibration. Finally, the model is applied to characterize the dynamic response of FE–dielectric bilayer structures and quantify the reduction in memory window due to device variability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, ν3 decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on τ3/m3 in the ν3 decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet σx, and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum σrel. Discrete-time filters represent a promising solution for pulse-processing in high-energy physics experiments due to their flexibility, reliability, and their capability to synthesize weighting functions with virtually any shape. One of the major concerns when designing one of these filters is to calculate the filter parameters that maximize the signal-to-noise ratio. The classic way to address this problem is to perform the noise analysis using a continuous-time domain approach based on the weighting function concept. However, when addressing the problem from an inadequate time domain, the analysis is not insightful and the resulting expressions are complex and difficult to use for design purposes. In this work, a mathematical framework for a design-oriented analysis of discrete-time filters in the discrete-time domain is presented. This analysis is based on treating the sampled noise as a discrete-time signal, which can be manipulated to obtain a closed-form expression for the front-end noise, suitable for computer automatic evaluation and filter optimization procedures. Resistive switching (RS) device (memristor) technology is continuously maturing towards industrial establishment. There are RS devices that demonstrate an "incremental" (analog) switching behavior, whereas others change their state in a binary form. The final achieved resistance is generally a function of the applied pulse characteristics, i.e. amplitude and duration. However, variability —both from device to device but also from cycle to cycle— and the stochastic nature of internal RS phenomena, still hold back any universal tuning approach based solely on these two magnitudes, making also difficult the qualitative comparison between devices with different material compounds owing to the required SET/RESET voltages being dependent on the biasing conditions. In this work we demonstrate experimentally using commercial RS devices from Knowm Inc. that the switching energy is very insensitive to the biasing conditions. We explored experimentally the SET-RESET behavior of bipolar RS devices from the energy point of view. We figured out the quantitative effect of the injected energy to the resistive state of the devices, and proposed an analytical model to explain our observations in the energy consumed by the device during the switching process. Charge amplifiers represent the standard solution to amplify signals from capacitive detectors in high energy physics experiments. In a typical front-end, the noise due to the charge amplifier, and particularly from its input transistor, limits the achievable resolution. The classic approach to attenuate noise effects in MOSFET charge amplifiers is to use the maximum power available, to use a minimum-length input device, and to establish the input transistor width in order to achieve the optimal capacitive matching at the input node. These conclusions, reached by analysis based on simple noise models, lead to sub-optimal results. In this work, a new approach on noise analysis for charge amplifiers based on an extension of the gm/ID methodology is presented. This method combines circuit equations and results from SPICE simulations, both valid for all operation regions and including all noise sources. The method, which allows to find the optimal operation point of the charge amplifier input device for maximum resolution, shows that the minimum device length is not necessarily the optimal, that flicker noise is responsible for the non-monotonic noise versus current function, and provides a deeper insight on the noise limits mechanism from an alternative and more design-oriented point of view. 26,000 3-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) have been produced for Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) by the Hainan Zhanchuang Photonics Technology Co., Ltd (HZC) company in China and passed all acceptance tests with only 15 tubes rejected. The mass production began in 2018 and elapsed for about 2 years at a rate of ∼ 1,000 PMTs per month. The characterization of the PMTs was performed in the factory concurrently with production as a joint effort between HZC and JUNO. Fifteen performance parameters were tracked at different sampling rates, and novel working strategies were implemented to improve quality assurance.
