The need for proficiency in academic writing has never been more important due to its significance for academic success and professional growth. The skills required in academic writing range from research to critical thinking and communication skills. It develops holistic intellectual development and will help one run a successful professional life, more so in highly researchoriented areas where publications become highly valued. This paper has attempted to fill up the research gaps created by the lack of research into corpus linguistic and corpus-based studies in general within the parameters of Philippine academic writing, with its insufficiency of known studies on metadiscourse markers in particular. This paper examined the use of metadiscourse markers in a researcher-constructed 120,000-word corpus of academic papers written by Grade 11 Senior High School students, namely, concept papers, position papers, reaction papers, and scientific reports. Specifically, the research determined the metadiscourse markers used by students and their frequency across text types, as well as qualitative analysis of their contextual usage. In the current study, it is revealed that students utilize a wide array of interactive and interactional markers, drawing on Hyland's taxonomy of metadiscourse markers (2005) and AntConc V. 3.5.8, a corpus analysis software. The study revealed a predominant use of interactive over interactional metadiscourse markers, with a notable emphasis on transitions within the interactive category. Qualitative analysis also showed that transitions and engagement markers serve various functions, such as clarifying relationships within the text, structuring arguments, and providing additional information for better understanding. Interactional resources were also employed to convey the writer's stance, engage the reader, and present a balanced view by acknowledging different perspectives. Hence, the findings highlighted that text type, rhetorical purpose, and the use of metadiscourse markers interact closely in shaping how the writer communicates and accomplishes their purpose effectively. Future research should address writing ability and experience as factors influencing the choice of metadiscourse markers and examine their variation of use across academic and nonacademic settings. Evaluating the long-term influence of academic papers in the early stage after publication is crucial for research management and decision-making. Although the total number of citations has been considered as a valid indicator to measure the academic influence of papers, there are still some bottleneck problems in predicting future citation counts. Firstly, it remains a challenging task to select the reasonable features due to the diversity of model features. Secondly, some prediction models are overly complex and their defects may cause prediction bias or even errors. Finally, the most important thing is that very few models possess long-term predictive ability. This paper proposes a prediction model that can provide an early evaluation of the long-term citations, or the long-term influence, of academic papers. The model uses features available immediately after publication or after a certain period of time. Taking academic papers in Information Science and Library Science as our experimental subject, we train the model using three machine learning algorithms and find that the artificial neural network performs satisfactorily. Our findings may offer guidance for research management and decision-making.

The classic reading club, characterized by its unique professionalism, diversity, high degree of freedom, and normalization, is becoming an important research and educational platform in the humanities and social sciences field of universities. Within the resonance field created by the reading club, members engage in collective reading to identify research paper topics, engage in debates to inspire paper writing ideas, write notes to accumulate material for academic writing, and provide mutual feedback to refine paper details, gradually enhancing their academic writing skills. The classic reading club effectively cultivates students' "reading and writing literacy", enhances their critical academic thinking, and helps them acquire essential academic writing skills through continuous practice, filling the gap in traditional classroom teaching in training students' academic paper writing abilities. There are two extreme ways in the use of philosophical concepts in China's academic research activities: First one is to completely remove the relationship between philosophical concepts and phenomena; Second, a large number of philosophical concepts are used. At present, there is a problem of piling up a large number of philosophical concepts in some humanities academic papers, that is, there is an excessive use of philosophical academic concepts. The reason is that the authors of these humanities academic papers try to use a lot of philosophical concepts to increase the amount of information and highlight the novelty of the papers. But when they do that, they do not carefully consider the rationality of the relationship between these philosophical concepts and the concepts connected with them, which results in arbitrariness in use and affects the seriousness of their judgments and the scientificity of their arguments. For this reason, in the humanities academic papers, we need to understand and grasp the rationality and appropriateness of the use of philosophical concepts, so as to enhance the preciseness of reasoning and the correctness of conclusions in this kind of academic papers, and thus enable China's philosophy and social science research to produce more high-quality academic works. Random statistics samples of 605 papers in 50 issues including 18 core journals and 15 provincial journals of atmospheric science show that there are about 38% of the key words or abstract writing is not standardized. In order to improve writing quality of academic papers, the problems and solutions of key words and abstracts in atmospheric science papers were discussed. The main conclusions are as following. The key words mainly have shortcomings in such aspects as selecting common words, omitting subject words, the inappropriate depth of indexing, key word in permutation being in disorder, etc. The abstract has the following shortcomings: the basic elements are incomplete, the improper information is embedded, and the results are general and vague. This study points out that: the selection of key words should be mainly based on the order words in the Chinese Thesaurus, which can be appropriately matched with the scientific and technological terms and proper nouns in the new interdisciplinary, new theory and new technology, and general words should be avoided; The key words should follow the principle of "accurate selection and complete selection". Key words should be extracted from the title, abstract, level title and even the text, which can fully express the theme of the paper and have retrieval value, the number of keywords should be 4-5 and their order should follow certain logical rules. The abstract should contain four elements: purpose, method, result and conclusion; avoid using the first person, embedding background knowledge, self-opinion and subjective evaluation; the result (conclusion) part should be logical, meaningful and quantitative, so that readers can see the core value of the paper through the research results. The article also gives four steps to extract the four elements of the abstract and three common writing formats of atmospheric science academic papers.

The objective of this article is to analyze the distinctive characteristics of research production in the field of communication in Latin American scientific communication journals. Meta-research is necessary because it allows re-evaluating the field and offers new horizons in knowledge production. Two studies were conducted: 1) Bibliometric analysis of 116 journals in eight databases and 24 publications in the Web of Science and Scopus; 2) Content analysis including that of 407 articles over a period of 10 years (2009--2018). The findings demonstrate a research trend in the Latin American region toward international standards, evidenced by a preponderance of empirical over essay studies. Universities in the region published most of the journals in the field and circulation was predominantly biannual. Contrary to expectations, the most widely disseminated topic was health communication, partly owing to a large sample of Brazilian journals. Within the empirical research, the qualitative approach was predominant. The interview was the most widely used research method in the region. Finally, the most used theories were agenda setting and framing. Imminent challenges arise, i.e., to strengthen indigenous theoretical production and to position the region's themes and reflection more decisively in knowledge production at a global level. This article aims to study the other side of the coin under the background of skyrocketing of Chinese natural science papers: the anomaly phenomenon in which Chinese social science papers are getting fewer and fewer. After analysis through the cross-efficiency DEA (Data envelopment analysis) and Malmquist index, we find that: (1) Although there are fewer and fewer published papers on social science in China, the number of social science full-time teachers and PhD students in Chinese universities, the number of fund grants and grant funding from National Science Foundation of China and National Social Science Foundation of China are in increasing trends. (2) The number of gross natural science papers per capita increased while the number of gross social science papers per capita decreased. However, the number of Chinese papers per capita published in domestic journals of CSCD (Chinese science citation database)/CSSCI (Chinese social science citation index) decreased from 2009 to 2018 both in natural science and social science. (3) From 2009 to 2018, the efficiency of the publication of Chinese social science papers in every subject declined, with an average decrease of 13.5%, which is mainly caused by the regression of the production frontier. Sport Science gained the largest decrease by 45.5% while Economics gained the smallest decrease by 11.2%. After an investigation of almost all CSSCI journals, we conclude that the reason for the decline in the publication of Chinese social science papers may be that China's unique journal system could not handle the problem that the average article length increased due to the improvement of scientific research, where the increase of 19.89% in average CSSCI journal pages is much smaller than the increase of 55.10% in average paper length during 2009–2018, causing the decrease in the publication and publication efficiency of Chinese social science papers. Therefore, the academic journal system of a country may have an important impact on its scientific research outputs, and China should improve the academic journal system to promote the development of social science. This paper approaches the state of academic production in communication confined to the Hispanic sphere, namely, Spain and Latin America, during the period extending between 2013 and 2017. As in previous meta-research, the aim here is to highlight potential shortcomings in the discipline, both theoretically and methodologically. From an instrumental standpoint, a systematic, objective and quantitative content analysis was implemented on a probabilistic sample of 1,548 articles from the seven main journals in the field, all indexed in the first quartiles of the SJR-Scopus ranking. Aside from the percentage report for each variable, two-stage cluster analyses were performed twice to identify statistically significant publication patterns. As far as the results are concerned, it is worth highlighting the empirical nature of the studies, generally relying on quantitative methodologies, although no specific theoretical corpora are referenced. On the other hand, and although social networks and ICTs have gained a notable prominence, traditional media continue to be, collectively, the most prominent in communication research. Finally, the challenges of the field seem to revolve around two axes: providing studies with methodological robustness and, above all, with the theoretical background necessary to confront, with guarantees, the understanding of the liquid communicative manifestations that flow, at great speed, from the Information Society. This study attempted to improve the quality of hairstyling-related studies and provide basic data for future studies on hairstyling terms through analysis of cosmetology-related loan words used in hairstyling theses among recent cosmetology papers. For data collection to derive valid conclusions, the signatures of a total of 1,980 academic papers collected after typing in the keyword ‘Hair’ at the Research Information Sharing Service (http://www.riss.kr) were analyzed. The results show that researchers in hairstyling seem not to pay close attention to the correct use of foreign loan words. Therefore, the study results would be very helpful to the development of future cosmetology studies. The correct notation and use of foreign loanwords should be further encouraged. Development of science and academic knowledge has led to changes in academic language and transfer of information and knowledge. In this regard, the present study is an attempt to investigate lexico-grammaticality in academic abstracts and their full research papers in Linguistics, Chemistry and Electrical engineering papers published during 1991-2015 in academic journals from a diachronic perspective through quantitative research design. The focus of this paper is on transitivity, mood and theme analysis in the corpus according to Halliday's (1994) systemic functional linguistics model. So, all the attempts are to find the changes in abstracts and research papers of these disciplines and how they are to be positioned in different linguistic contexts over time. The results revealed that research papers employ the spectrum of possible lexical realization quite differently as compared to general English, especially concerning the use of specific lexical items. Also, the results of chi-squares of each discipline showed that there are significant differences between papers over time at .05 level of significance (.000< .05) with regard to the transitivity, mood, and theme.

Background and Aim: Scholarly journals are quite necessary for each society’s scientific life, especially the medical society, because they represent the academic community’s achievements to a large extent at regional, national and international levels. The present research, therefore, aims at a comparative study on the qualitative and quantitative growth of journals and articles in medical sciences and related fields in Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) member countries in Scopus. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive survey with a scientometric approach. The population of the study includes scientific journals and articles in medical sciences indexed in Scopus database. In this study, EMRO academic products and 140 scientific journals have been investigated. Results: The results show that a large number of member countries’ scientific works have been produced and published in medical fields (The main topic of 144,628 out of 573,067 documents published by these countries has been medical fields). Meanwhile, the number of journals which were indexed during the studied period increased from 17 to 127. Conclusion: The production of scientific documents and academic journals in the field of medicine in EMRO member countries has increased during the studied period and has had a considerable leap in the final years. Academic articles have increased along with the increase in scientific journals in these countries.

OBJECTIVES: To describe authorship opportunities for nursing students, encourage writing for publication, and provide practical guidance on reformatting a "school " paper into a version suitable for publication. Data Soi rces: Published literature, authors' experience. CONCLUSION: Nursing students have unique opportunities to write for publication during, and beyond, their educational programs. Writing for publication can be a very rewarding experience and a meaningful one, as nurse authors contribute to the body of knowledge of oncology nursing. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: While an excellent paper written for a class, thesis, final project, or dissertation is virtually never publishable without substantial changes, by following the guidance provided in this article, publication is very possible. Keywords for academic papers are terms selected and created by the authors, and are, in general, considered a core element that summarizes and represents the papers' content. This research analysed the ways in which the author keywords for academic papers are used in multiple disciplines. The Brillouin index was used for an analysis of interdisciplinarity. As a result, 63.7 percent of the keywords were shown to appear in only one area of study. These cannot be considered keywords with interdisciplinarity, but rather with topic specificity. In addition, the interdisciplinarity degree of 80 percent of the keywords were low, between 0 and 0.499. This indicates that the majority of author keywords for academic papers do not show interdisciplinarity. Meanwhile, certain author keywords had a fairly high interdisciplinarity degree. In this case, they can be seen as topics that are researched in multiple disciplines. It was revealed that the interdisciplinarity degree of author keywords in art/physical education are lower than in the humanities or social sciences. Food systems primary goal should be to nourish human beings. And yet, the current industrial food system, with its profit-maximising ethos, is not achieving that goal despite producing food in excess. On the contrary, this system is the main driver of malnutrition on the planet, as well as environmental degradation. Nonetheless, food systems also play a double role as Nature's steward. Deciding which role we want food systems to play will very much depend on the idea we have about food. What is food for humans? The dominant narrative of the industrial food system undeniably considers food as a tradeable commodity whose value is mostly determined by its price. This narrative was crafted and disseminated initially by academics, who largely favoured one option (commodification of food) over the others (food as commons or public good). In this research, the author aims to understand how academia has explored the value-based considerations of food as commodity and private good (hegemonic narratives) compared to considerations of food as commons and public good (alternative narratives). A systematic literature review of academic papers since 1900 has been carried out with Google Scholar™, using different searching terms related to “food + commons”, “food + commodity”, “food + public good” and “food + private good”. Following the PRISMA methodology to clean the sample, a content analysis has been carried out with the 70 references including “food + commons” and “food + public good”. Results clearly show that both topics are very marginal subjects in the academic milieu (only 179 results before cleaning) but with a sharp increase in the eight years that followed the 2008 food crisis. On the contrary, “food + commodity” presents almost 50,000 references since 1900 (before cleaning), with a remarkable increase since the 1980s, coincidental with the dominance of neoliberal doctrines. The phenomenological approach to food (epitomised in the “food as” searching term) largely prevails over the ontological approach to food (“food is”) except when food is identified as a “private good”. This result points to the ontological absolute ”food is a private good” developed by the economic scholars as a dominant narrative that locked other valuations of food by legal, political or historical scholars or non-scientific epistemologies. In a world where the industrial food system has clearly proven its unfitness to feed us adequately in a sustainable way, the need for academia to explore other food valuations seems more urgent than ever. Scholars need to approach other narratives of food (as commons or public good) that go beyond the hegemonic and permitted ideas, unlocking unexplored food policy options to guarantee universal access to food for all humans, regardless their purchasing power, without mortgaging the viability of our planet.
