Context. It is generally accepted that all massive galaxies host supermassive black holes (BHs) in their center and that mergers of two galaxies lead to the formation of BH binaries. The most interesting among them comprise the mergers in their final state, that is to say with parsec (3.2 light years) or sub-parsec orbital separations. It is possible to detect these systems with binary self-lensing. Aims. Here we report the potential detection of a central supermassive BH binary in the active galaxy (AGN) NGC 1566 based on a microlensing outburst. The light curve of the outburst – based on observations with the All Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae – lasted from the beginning of 2017 until the beginning of 2020. The steep symmetric light curve as well as its shape look very different with respect to normal random variations in AGN. Results. However, the observations could be easily reproduced with a best-fit standard microlensing light curve. Based on the light curve, we derived a characteristic timescale of 155 days. During the outburst, the continuum as well as the broad line intensities varied; however, the narrow emission lines did not. This is an indication that the lensing object orbits the AGN nucleus between the broad line region (BLR) and the narrow line region (NLR), that is, at a distance on the order of 250 light days. The light curve can be reproduced by a lens with a BH mass of 5 × 105 M⊙. This implies a mass ratio to the central AGN on the order of 1–10. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Close to the Roche radius of a white dwarf (WD), an asteroid on a circular orbit sheds material that then adopts a very similar orbit. Observations of the resulting debris show a periodic behaviour and changes in flux on short timescales, implying ongoing dynamical activity. Additional encounters from other minor planets may then yield co-orbital rings of debris at different inclinations. The structure, dynamics, and lifetime of these debris discs remains highly uncertain, but is important for understanding WD planetary systems. Aims. We aim to identify and quantify the locations of co-orbitals in WD–asteroid–dust particle three-body systems by exploring the influence of 1:1 resonant periodic orbits. We begin this exploration with co-planar and inclined orbits in the circular restricted three- body problem (CRTBP) and model the dynamical evolution of these exosystems over observable timescales. The mass ratio parameter for this class of systems (≈2 × 10−11) is one of the lowest ever explored in this dynamical configuration. Methods. We computed the periodic orbits, deduced their linear stability, and suitably seeded the dynamical stability (DS) maps. We carried out a limited suite of N-body simulations to provide direct comparisons with the DS maps. Results. We derive novel results for this extreme mass ratio in the CRTBP, including new unstable 3D families. We illustrate through the maps and N-body simulations where dust can exist in a stable configuration over observable timescales across a wide expanse of parameter space in the absence of strong external forces. Conclusions. Over a timescale of 10 years, the maximum orbital period deviations of stable debris due to the co-orbital perturbations of the asteroid is about a few seconds. Unstable debris in a close encounter with the asteroid typically deviates from the co-orbital configuration by more than about 20 km and is on a near-circular orbit with an eccentricity lower than ≈0.01. Quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) are repeated X-ray flares from galactic nuclei that recur every few hours to days, depending on the source. Despite some diversity in the recurrence and amplitude of eruptions, their striking regularity has motivated theorists to associate QPEs with orbital systems. Among the known QPE sources, eRO-QPE2 has shown the most regular flare timing and luminosity since its discovery. We report here on its long-term evolution over 3.3 yr from discovery and find that: i) the average QPE recurrence time per epoch has decreased over time, albeit not at a uniform rate; ii) the distinct alternation between consecutive long and short recurrence times found at discovery has not been significant since; iii) the spectral properties, namely flux and temperature of both eruptions and quiescence components, have remained remarkably consistent within uncertainties. We attempted to interpret these results as orbital period and eccentricity decay coupled with orbital and disk precession. However, since gaps between observations are too long, we are not able to distinguish between an evolution dominated by just a decreasing trend, or by large modulations (e.g. due to the precession frequencies at play). In the former case, the observed period decrease is roughly consistent with that of a star losing orbital energy due to hydrodynamic gas drag from disk collisions, although the related eccentricity decay is too fast and additional modulations have to contribute too. In the latter case, no conclusive remarks are possible on the orbital evolution and the nature of the orbiter due to the many effects at play. However, these two cases come with distinctive predictions for future X-ray data: in the case of a decreasing trend, we expect all future observations to show a shorter recurrence time than the latest epoch, while in the case of large-amplitude modulations we expect some future observations to be found with a larger recurrence, hence an apparent temporary period increase. We present a dynamical study of the intermediate polar cataclysmic variable YY Dra based on time-series observations in the K band, where the donor star is known to be the major flux contributor. We covered the 3.97-h orbital cycle with 44 spectra taken between 2020 and 2022 and two epochs of photometry observed in 2021 March and May. One of the light curves was simultaneously obtained with spectroscopy to better account for the effects of irradiation of the donor star and the presence of accretion light. From the spectroscopy, we derived the radial velocity curve of the donor star metallic absorption lines, constrained its spectral type to M0.5–M3.5 with no measurable changes in the effective temperature between the irradiated and non-irradiated hemispheres of the star, and measured its projected rotational velocity vrot sin i = 103 ± 2 km s−1. Through simultaneous modelling of the radial velocity and light curves, we derived values for the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the donor star, K2 = 188−2+1 km s−1, the donor to white dwarf mass ratio, q = M2/M1 = 0.62 ± 0.02, and the orbital inclination, i = 42°−1°+2°. These binary parameters yield dynamical masses of M1 = 0.99−0.09+0.10 M⊙ and M2 = 0.62−0.06+0.07 M⊙ (68 per cent confidence level). As found for the intermediate polars GK Per and XY Ari, the white dwarf dynamical mass in YY Dra significantly differs from several estimates obtained by modelling the X-ray spectral continuum. Context. It is well established that classical T Tauri stars accrete material from a circumstellar disk through magnetic fields. However, the physics regulating the processes in the inner (0.1 AU) disk is still not well understood. Aims. Our aim is to characterize the accretion process of the classical T Tauri Star RU Lup. Methods. Optical high-resolution spectroscopic observations with CHIRON and ESPRESSO were obtained simultaneously with photometric data from AAVSO and TESS. Results. We detected a periodic modulation in the narrow component of the He I 5876 line with a period that is compatible with the stellar rotation period, indicating the presence of a compact region on the stellar surface that we identified as the footprint of the accretion shock. We show that this region is responsible for the veiling spectrum, which is made up of a continuum component plus narrow line emission that fills in the photospheric lines. An analysis of the high-cadence TESS light curve reveals quasi-periodic oscillations on timescales shorter than the stellar rotation period, suggesting that the accretion disk in RU Lup extends inward of the corotation radius, with a truncation radius at ~2 R*. This is compatible with predictions from three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic models of accretion through a magnetic boundary layer (MBL). In this scenario, the photometric variability of RU Lup is produced by a nonsta-tionary hot spot on the stellar surface that rotates with the Keplerian period at the truncation radius. We also qualitatively discuss how more complex hot spot shapes may generate the same variability pattern. The analysis of the broad components of selected emission lines reveals the existence of a non-axisymmetric, temperature-stratified flow around the star, in which the gas leaves the accretion disk at the truncation radius and accretes onto the star channeled by the magnetic field lines. The unusually rich metallic emission line spectrum of RU Lup might be characteristic of the MBL regime of accretion. Conclusions. Our extensive multiwavelength database of RU Lup reveals many similarities to predictions from the scenario of accretion through a magnetic boundary layer. Alternative explanations would require the existence of a hot spot with a complex shape, perhaps made of two brighter knots, or a warped structure in the inner disk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CXOU J110926.4−650224 is a candidate transitional millisecond pulsar (tMSP) with X-ray and radio emission properties reminiscent of those observed in confirmed tMSPs in their X-ray 'subluminous' disc state. We present the results of observing campaigns that, for the first time, characterise the optical and near-infrared variability of this source and establish a connection with the mode-switching phenomenon observed in X-rays. The optical emission exhibited flickering activity, frequent dipping episodes where it appeared redder, and a multi-peaked flare where it was bluer. The variability pattern was strongly correlated with that of the X-ray emission. Each dip matched an X-ray low-mode episode, indicating that a significant portion of the optical emission originates from nearly the same region as the X-ray emission. The near-infrared emission also displayed remarkable variability, including a dip of 20 min in length during which it nearly vanished. Time-resolved optical spectroscopic observations reveal significant changes in the properties of emission lines from the disc and help infer the spectral type of the companion star to be between K0 and K5. We compare the properties of CXOU J110926.4−650224 with those of other tMSPs in the X-ray subluminous disc state and discuss our findings within the context of a recently proposed scenario that explains the phenomenology exhibited by the prototypical tMSP PSR J1023+0038. We present the spectro-polarimetric results obtained from simultaneous X-ray observations with IXPE, NuSTAR, and NICER of the dipping neutron star X-ray binary 4U 1624–49. This source is the most polarized Atoll source so far observed with IXPE, with a polarization degree of 2.7%±0.9% in the 2–8 keV band during the nondip phase and marginal evidence of an increasing trend with energy. The higher polarization degree compared to other Atolls can be explained by the high inclination of the system (i ≈ 60°). The spectra are well described by the combination of soft thermal emission, a Comptonized component, and reflection of soft photons off the accretion disk. During the dips, the hydrogen column density of the highly ionized absorber increases while the ionization state decreases. The Comptonized radiation seems to be the dominant contribution to the polarized signal, with additional reflected photons that contribute significantly even though their fraction in the total flux is not high. Context. The detected population of "spiders", referring to millisecond pulsar binaries, has significantly grown in the past decade thanks to multiwavelength follow-up investigations of unidentified Fermi sources. These systems consist of low-mass stellar companions orbiting rotation-powered millisecond pulsars in short periods of a few hours up to day. Among them, a subset of intriguing objects called transitional millisecond pulsars (tMSPs) has been shown to exhibit a remarkable behavior, transitioning between pulsar-binary and faint low-mass X-ray binary states over a span of a few years. Aims. Our objective is to study the interaction of stellar winds in tMSPs in order to understand their observational properties. To this end we focus on the parameter range that places the system near Roche-lobe overflow. Methods. Employing the adaptative mesh refinement (AMR) AMRVAC 2.0 code, we performed 2D hydrodynamical (HD) simulations of the interaction between the flows from both stars, accounting for the effects of gravity and orbital motion. Results. By studying the mass loss and launch speed of the winds, we successfully recreated two phenomenologically distinct regimes: the accretion stream and the pulsar radio state. We also identified the tipping point that marks the sharp transition between these two states. In the accretion stream state, we discover a very strong variability induced by the pulsar wind. In the pulsar state, we reconstructed the corresponding X-ray light curves of the system that produces the characteristic double-peak pattern of these systems. The position of the peaks is shifted due to orbital motion and the leading peak is weaker due to eclipsing by the companion. Conclusions. This study highlights the importance of gravity and orbital motion in the interaction between the companion and pulsar winds. Our setup allows the study of the complex interaction between the pulsar wind and an accretion stream during mass transfer. Context. The strong tidal force in a supermassive black hole's (SMBH) vicinity, coupled with a higher stellar density at the center of a galaxy, make it an ideal location to study the interaction between stars and black holes. Two stars moving near the SMBH could collide at a very high speed, which can result in a high energy flare. The resulting debris can then accrete onto the SMBH, which could be observed as a separate event. Aims. We simulate the light curves resulting from the fallback accretion in the aftermath of a stellar collision near a SMBH. We investigate how it varies with physical parameters of the system. Methods. Light curves are calculated by simulating post-collision ejecta as N particles moving along individual orbits which are determined by each particle's angular momentum, and assuming that all particles start from the distance from the black hole at which the two stars collided. We calculate how long it takes for each particle to reach its distance of closest approach to the SMBH, and from there we add to it the viscous accretion timescale as described by the alpha-disk model for accretion disks. Given a timestamp for each particle to accrete, this can be translated into into a luminosity for a given radiative efficiency. Results. With all other physical parameters of the system held constant, the direction of the relative velocity vector at time of impact plays a large role in determining the overall form of the light curve. One distinctive light curve we notice is characterized by a sustained increase in the luminosity some time after accretion has started. We compare this form to the light curves of some candidate tidal disruption events (TDEs). Conclusions. Stellar collision accretion flares can take on unique appearances that would allow them to be easily distinguished, as well as elucidate underlying physical parameters of the system. There exist several ways to distinguish these events from TDEs, including the much wider range of SMBH masses stellar collisions may exist around. The beginning of the Vera Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time will greatly improve survey abilities and facilitate in the identification of more stellar collision events, particularly in higher-mass SMBH systems. Black-hole (BH) high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) systems are likely to be the progenitors of BH-BH mergers detected in gravitational waves by LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA (LVK). Yet merging BHs reach higher masses (∼100 M⊙) than BHs in HMXBs (∼20 M⊙) and typically exhibit lower spins (aBH ≲ 0.25 with a larger values tail) than what is often claimed for BHs in HMXBs (aBH ≳ 0.9). This could suggest that these two classes of systems belong to different populations, but here we show that this may not necessarily be the case. The difference in masses is easily explained as the known HMXB-BHs are in galaxies with relatively high metallicity, so their progenitor stars are subject to strong mass loss from winds, leading to relatively low-mass BH at core collapse. Conversely, LVK is also able to detect BHs from low-metallicity galaxies that are known to naturally produce more massive stellar-origin BHs. However, the difference in spin is more difficult to explain. Models with efficient angular momentum transport in stellar interiors produce slowly spinning progenitors for both LVK and HMXB BHs. Known HMXBs have orbital periods that are too long for efficient tidal spin-up and are also unlikely to have undergone significant accretion spin-up. Instead, we show that the derived value of the BH spin depends strongly on how the HMXB accretion disc emission is modelled. We argue that since Cyg X-1 is never observed to be in a soft spectral state, the appropriate spectral models must take into account the Comptonisation of the disc photosphere. We show that such models are consistent with low spin values, namely: aBH ∼ 0.1. This was recently confirmed by other teams for both Cyg X-1 and LMC X-1 and here we show this is also the case for M33 X-7. We conclude that all known HMXB BHs can exhibit a low spin, in accordance with the results of stellar evolution models. Hence, the observations presented in this work are consistent with LVK BHs and HMXB BHs belonging to the same population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Investigating the flow of material along filamentary structures towards the central core can help provide insights into high-mass star formation and evolution. Aims. Our main motivation is to answer the question of what the properties of accretion flows are in star-forming clusters. We used data from the ALMA Evolutionary Study of High Mass Protocluster Formation in the Galaxy (ALMAGAL) survey to study 100 ALMAGAL regions at a ∼1″ resolution, located between ∼2 and 6 kpc. Methods. Making use of the ALMAGAL ∼1.3 mm line and continuum data, we estimated flow rates onto individual cores. We focus specifically on flow rates along filamentary structures associated with these cores. Our primary analysis is centered around position velocity cuts in H2CO (30, 3–20, 2), which allow us to measure the velocity fields surrounding these cores. Combining this work with column density estimates, we were able to derive the flow rates along the extended filamentary structures associated with cores in these regions. Results. We selected a sample of 100 ALMAGAL regions, covering four evolutionary stages from quiescent to protostellar, young stellar objects (YSOs), and HII regions (25 each). Using a dendrogram and line analysis, we identify a final sample of 182 cores in 87 regions. In this paper, we present 728 flow rates for our sample (4 per core), analysed in the context of evolutionary stage, distance from the core, and core mass. On average, for the whole sample, we derived flow rates on the order of ∼10−4 M⊙ yr−1 with estimated uncertainties of ±50%. We see increasing differences in the values among evolutionary stages, most notably between the less evolved (quiescent and protostellar) and more evolved (YSO and HII region) sources and we also see an increasing trend as we move further away from the centre of these cores. We also find a clear relationship between the calculated flow rates and core masses ∼M2/3, which is in line with the result expected from the tidal-lobe accretion mechanism. The significance of these relationships is tested with Kolmogorov–Smirnov and Mann-Whitney U tests. Conclusions. Overall, we see an increasing trend in the relationships between the flow rate and the three investigated parameters, namely: evolutionary stage, distance from the core, and core mass. Context. The inner parts of the hot discs surrounding massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) are still barely explored due to observational limitations in terms of angular resolution, scarcity of diagnostic lines, and the embedded and rare nature of these targets. Aims. We present the first K-band spectro-interferometric observations towards the MYSO G033.3891, which based on former kinematic evidence via the CO bandhead emission is known to host an accreting disc. Methods. Using the high spectral resolution mode (R∼4000) of the GRAVITY/VLTI, we spatially resolved the emission of the inner dusty disc and the crucial gaseous interface between the star and the dusty disc. Using detailed modelling on the K-band dust continuum and tracers known to be associated with the ionised and molecular gaseous interface (Brγ, CO), we report on the smallest scales of accretion and ejection. Results. The new observations in combination with our geometric and kinematic models employed to fit former high spectral resolution observations on the source (R∼30 000; CRIRES/VLTI) allowed us to constrain the size of the inner gaseous disc both spatially and kinematically via the CO overtone emission at only 2 au. Our models reveal that both Brγ and CO emissions are located well within the dust sublimation radius (5 au) as traced by the hot 2.2 µm dust continuum. Conclusions. Our paper provides the first case study where the tiniest scales of gaseous accretion around the MYSO G033.3891 are probed both kinematically and spatially via the CO bandhead emission. This analysis of G033.3891 stands as only the second instance of such an investigation within MYSOs, underscoring the gradual accumulation of knowledge regarding how massive young stars gain their mass while further solidifying the disc nature of accretion at the smallest scales of MYSOs. Aims. During the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG)/eROSITA all-sky surveys, X-ray sources close to the South Ecliptic Pole (SEP) are observed almost every 4 h. We aim to identify the sources exhibiting the most significant long-term X-ray variability within 3° of the SEP in the first three surveys, and investigate their properties. Methods. We determined the variability significance of ~104 sources observed by eROSITA within 3° of the SEP by using thresholds on the Bayesian excess variance (SCATT_LO) and the maximum amplitude deviation (AMPL_SIG). Sources exhibiting a variability significance above 3σ were subdivided into likely Galactic and extragalactic sources, by using spectral and photometric information of their optical counterparts. We quantified the X-ray normalised excess variances of all variable sources, and also calculated the periodograms of the brightest ones. Results. Out of more than 104 X-ray sources detected by eROSITA within 3° of the SEP, we identified 453 that exhibit significant X-ray variability. SCATT_LO is significantly more sensitive to detecting variable sources in this field, but AMPL_SIG helps to provide a more complete variability sample. Of those variable sources, 168 were classified as likely extragalactic, and 235 as likely Galactic. The periodograms of most bright and variable extragalactic sources are approximately described by an aliased power law (P ∞ ν−α) with an index of α ≈ 1. We identified a potential tidal disruption event, and long-term transient sources. The stellar X-ray variability was predominantly caused by bright X-ray flares from coronally active stars. Context. Observations of blue-shifted X-ray absorption lines indicate the presence of wind from the accretion disc in X-ray binaries. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) driving is one possible wind-launching mechanism. Recent theoretical developments have made self-similar magnetic accretion-ejection solutions much more generalised, showing that wind can be launched at a much lower magnetisation than the equipartition value, which had previously been the only possibility. Aims. In this work, we model the transmitted spectra through MHD-driven photoionised wind models with different levels of magnetisation. We investigate the possibility of detecting absorption lines by upcoming instruments, such as XRISM and Athena. We investigate the robustness of the method of fitting asymmetric line profiles by multiple Gaussians. Methods. We used the photoionisation code XSTAR to simulate the transmitted model spectra. To cover the extensive range of velocity and density of the wind spanned over a large distance (∼105 gravitational radii), we divided the wind into slabs following a logarithmic radial grid. Fake observed spectra are finally produced by convolving model spectra with instrument responses. Since the line asymmetries are apparent in the convolved spectra as well, this can be used in future XRISM and Athena spectra as an observable diagnostic to fit for. We applied some amount of rigor in assessing the equivalent widths of the major absorption lines, including the Fe XXVI Lyα doublets, which will be clearly distinguishable thanks to the superior quality of future high-resolution spectra. Results. Disc magnetisation stands as another crucial MHD variable that can significantly alter the absorption line profiles. Pure MHD outflow models at low magnetisation are dense enough to be observed by the existing or upcoming instruments. Therefore, these models can serve as simpler alternatives to MHD-thermal models. Fitting with multiple Gaussians is a promising method for handling asymmetric line profiles, as well as the Fe XXVI Lyα doublets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The final stages of a protoplanetary disk are essential for our understanding of the formation and evolution of planets. Photoevaporation is an important mechanism that contributes to the dispersal of an accretion disk and has significant consequences for the disk's lifetime. However, the combined effects of photoevaporation and star-disk interaction have not been investigated in previous studies. Aims. A photoevaporative disk evolution model including a detailed formulation of the inner star-disk interaction region will improve the understanding of the final stages of disk evolution. Methods. We combined an implicit disk evolution model with a photoevaporative mass-loss profile. By including the innermost disk regions down to 0.01 AU, we could calculate the star-disk interaction, the stellar spin evolution, and the transition from an accreting disk to the propeller regime self-consistently. Starting from an early Class II star-disk system (with an age of 1 Myr), we calculated the long-term evolution of the system until the disk becomes almost completely dissolved. Results. Photoevaporation has a significant effect on disk structure and evolution. The radial extent of the dead zone decreases, and the number of episodic accretion events (outbursts) is reduced by high stellar X-ray luminosities. Reasonable accretion rates (>10−8M⊙yr) in combination with photoevaporative gaps are possible for a dead zone that is still massive enough to develop episodic accretion events. Furthermore, the stellar spin evolution during the Class II evolution is less affected by the star-disk interaction in the case of high X-ray luminosities. Conclusions. Our results suggest that the formation of planets, especially habitable planets, in the dead zone is strongly impaired in the case of strong X-ray luminosities. Additionally, the importance of the star-disk interaction during the Class II phase with respect to the stellar spin evolution is reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Understanding the physical conditions of circumstellar material around young stars is crucial to star and planet formation studies. In particular, very low-mass stars (M★ < 0.2 M⊙) are interesting sources to characterize as they are known to host a diverse population of rocky planets. Molecular and atomic hydrogen lines can probe the properties of the circumstellar gas. Aims. This work aims to measure the mass accretion rate, the accretion luminosity, and more generally the physical conditions of the warm emitting gas in the inner disk of the very low-mass star 2MASS-J16053215-1933159. We investigate the source mid-infrared spectrum for atomic and molecular hydrogen line emission. Methods. We present the full James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) spectrum of the protoplanetary disk around the very low-mass star 2MASS-J16053215-1933159 from the MINDS GTO program, previously shown to be abundant in hydrocarbon molecules. We analyzed the atomic and molecular hydrogen lines in this source by fitting one or multiple Gaussian profiles. We then built a rotational diagram for the H2 lines to constrain the rotational temperature and column density of the gas. Finally, we compared the observed atomic line fluxes to predictions from two standard emission models. Results. We identify five molecular hydrogen pure rotational lines and 16 atomic hydrogen recombination lines in the 5–20 µm spectral range. The spectrum indicates optically thin emission for both species. We use the molecular hydrogen lines to constrain the mass and temperature of the warm emitting gas. We derive a total gas mass of only 2.3 × 10−5 MJup and a temperature of 635 K for the warm H2 gas component located in the very inner disk (r < 0.033 au), which only accounts for a small fraction of the upper limit for the disk mass from continuum observations (0.2 MJup). The HI (7−6) recombination line is used to measure the mass accretion rate (4.0 × 10−10M⊙ yr−1) and luminosity (3.1 × 10−3L⊙) onto the central source. This line falls close to the HI (11−8) line, however at the spectral resolution of JWST MIRI we managed to measure both separately. Previous studies based on Spitzer have measured the combined flux of both lines to measure accretion rates. HI recombination lines can also be used to derive the physical properties of the gas using atomic recombination models. The model predictions of the atomic line relative intensities constrain the atomic hydrogen density to about 109−1010 cm−3 and temperatures up to 5000 K. Conclusions. The JWST-MIRI MRS observations for the very low-mass star 2MASS-J16053215-1933159 reveal a large number of emission lines, many originating from atomic and molecular hydrogen because we are able to look into the disk warm molecular layer. Their analysis constrains the physical properties of the emitting gas and showcases the potential of JWST to deepen our understanding of the physical and chemical structure of protoplanetary disks. We present the spectral and timing study of V404 Cygni from all its available Chandra observations and which recently come up in public domain of Chandra data archive. The data reduction and analysis were done using CIAO 4.14 and HEASOFT 6.30.1. The spectral analysis was done using spectral fitting package XSPEC version 12.12.1, available in the Heasoft package. The spectra of the source is fitted in the energy range 0.3 -8.0 keV using two empirical spectral models the absorbed power law and an absorbed disk-blackbody. The X-ray binary source V404 Cygni is found to be in the quiescent state having the X-ray luminosity in the range with few times 1032 erg s-1. The source is found to be in the hard state and is well explained by power-law model with a powerlaw photon index ~ 2 with ny in the range~ (0.7-1.2) x 1022 cm-2. From timing analysis, Src-1 (V404 Cygni), in all the time bins- 0.5, 1 and 2 ks, the probability for the count rate to be constant is 0.17 x10-33 in all the observations in the year 2021 and 2023 (ObsID 23421, ObsID 23422, ObsID 23423 & ObsID 28927). However, in the year 2017 observation it is found to be less variable. This clearly shows the presence of short-term variability in kilo-seconds time-scales with the currently available Chandra data. So, it is indicative that the binary source V404 Cygni is more likely to be variable source both in long-term (years) as well as short-term (kiloseconds) scales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The mass and spin of massive black holes (BHs) at the centre of galaxies evolve due to gas accretion and mergers with other BHs. Besides affecting the evolution of relativistic jets, for example, the BH spin determines the efficiency with which the BH radiates energy. Aims. Using cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations, we investigate the evolution of the BH spin across cosmic time and its role in controlling the joint growth of supermassive BHs and their host galaxies. Methods. We implemented a sub-resolution prescription that models the BH spin, accounting for both BH coalescence and misaligned accretion through a geometrically thin, optically thick disc. We investigated how BH spin evolves in two idealised setups, in zoomed-in simulations and in a cosmological volume. The latter simulation allowed us to retrieve statistically robust results for the evolution and distribution of BH spins as a function of BH properties. Results. We find that BHs with MBH ≲ 2 × 107M⊙ grow through gas accretion, occurring mostly in a coherent fashion that favours spin-up. Above MBH ≳ 2 × 107M⊙, the gas angular momentum directions of subsequent accretion episodes are often uncorrelated with each other. The probability of counter-rotating accretion and hence spin-down increases with BH mass. In the latter mass regime, BH coalescence plays an important role. The spin magnitude displays a wide variety of histories, depending on the dynamical state of the gas feeding the BH and the relative contribution of mergers and gas accretion. As a result of their combined effect, we observe a broad range of values of the spin magnitude at the high-mass end. Reorientation of the BH spin direction occurs on short timescales (≲ 10 Myr) only during highly accreting phases (ƒEdd ≳ 0.1). Recently, there has been renewed interest in the Be X-ray binary (Be/XRB) SAX J1324.4−6200 because of its spatial coincidence with a variable γ-ray source detected by Fermi/LAT. To explore more thoroughly its properties, new X-ray observations were carried out in 2023 by NuSTAR, XMM-Newton, and Swift satellites, jointly covering the energy range from 0.2 − 79 keV. SAX J1324.4−6200 was caught at an X-ray flux of ∼10−11 erg cm−2 s−1. The X-ray spectrum fits well with an absorbed power law with a high energy cutoff. Other acceptable fits require an additional blackbody component (kTbb ≈ 1.1 keV) or a Gaussian in absorption (Egabs ≈ 6.9 keV). We measured a NuSTAR spin period of 175.8127 ± 0.0036 s and an XMM-Newton spin period of 175.862 ± 0.025 s. We show that all the available spin period measurements of SAX J1324.4−6200, spanning 29 yr, are highly correlated with time, resulting in a remarkably stable spin-down of Ṗ = 6.09 ± 0.06 × 10−9 s s−1. We find that if SAX J1324.4−6200 hosts an accretion-powered pulsar, accretion torque models indicate a surface magnetic field of ∼1012 − 13 G. The X-ray properties emerging from our analysis strenghten the hypothesis that SAX J1324.4−6200 belongs to the small group of persistent Be/XRBs. We also performed radio observations with the Parkes Murriyang telescope, to search for radio pulsations. However, no radio pulsations compatible with the rotational ephemeris of SAX J1324.4−6200 were detected. We rule out the hypothesis that SAX J1324.4−6200 is a γ-ray binary where the emission is produced by interactions between the pulsar and the companion winds. Other models commonly used to account for the production of γ-rays in accreting pulsars cannot reproduce the bright emission from SAX J1324.4−6200. We examined other possible mechanisms behind the γ-ray emission and note that there is a ∼0.5% chance probability that an unknown extragalactic active galactic nucleus (AGN) observed through the Galactic plane may coincidentally fall within the Fermi/LAT error circle of the source and be responsible for the γ-ray emission. Spectro-polarimetric signatures of accretion disks in X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei contain information on the masses and spins of their central black holes, as well as the geometry of matter in proximity to the compact objects. This information can be extracted by means of X-ray polarimetry. In this work, we present a fast analytical ray-tracing technique for polarized light (ARTPOL) that helps us to obtain the spinning black hole parameters from the observed properties. This technique can replace the otherwise time-consuming numerical ray-tracing calculations for any optically thick or geometrically thin accretion flow. For the purposes of illustration, we considered a standard optically thick, geometrically thin accretion disk in the equatorial plane of the Kerr black hole. We show that ARTPOL proves accurate for dimensionless spin parameter a ≤ 0.94 with a speed that is over four orders of magnitude faster than direct ray-tracing calculations. This approach opens up broader prospects for direct fittings of the spectro-polarimetric data from the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Unusually, there are still certain characteristics of the changing-look (CL) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that remain undetected. Consequently, the trigger mechanism behind the CL phenomenon observed in partial AGNs remains unknown. Aims. We explore the light curve and spectral energy distribution (SED) of the CL blazar OQ 334 as obtained by Fermi-LAT. Methods. By examining the variability of the equivalent width (EW), we categorise the Fermi-LAT light curves of OQ 334 during the epoch of MJD 54628−58677 into seven distinct epochs, including the flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) state, the transition state, and the BL Lac state. We obtained both a Fermi-LAT SED and a multi-wavelength SED for each of these distinct epochs. Results. The source exhibits a transformation from a quiescent state to a highly active state, as evidenced by the variability of the EW. The multi-wavelength SEDs display a prominent external Compton characteristic, even though the Fermi-LAT SED reveals both a FSRQ and a BL Lac state across the seven different epochs. To gain further insights, we employed a leptonic model that takes into account the soft photon fields originating from both synchrotron radiation and the external environment. By simulating the multi-wavelength SEDs for each epoch, we uncover the following results. Firstly, the energy density of the external photon fields evolves in an oscillatory manner over the seven different epochs. Also, the energy density of the external photon fields in the BL Lac state is lower than that in the FSRQ state. Conclusions. These findings suggest that the CL blazar represents a unique phase in the blazar sequence. Considering that the energy density of the external photon fields is proportional to the accretion rate, we propose that evidence for the interconversion of advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) discs and standard Shakura–Sunyaev discs (SSDs), – as variations in accretion modes in the CL blazar – can be obtained through observations by Fermi-LAT. Context. We investigate the physical nature of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) using machine learning (ML) tools. Aims. We show that the redshift, z, bolometric luminosity, LBol, central mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH), MBH, Eddington ratio, λEdd, and AGN class (obscured or unobscured) can be reconstructed through multi-wavelength photometric observations only. Methods. We trained a random forest regressor (RFR) ML-model on 7616 spectroscopically observed AGNs from the SPIDERS-AGN survey, which had previously been cross-matched with soft X-ray observations (from ROSAT or XMM), WISE mid-infrared photometry, and optical photometry from SDSS ugriz filters. We built a catalog of 21 050 AGNs that were subsequently reconstructed with the trained RFR; for 9687 sources, we found archival redshift measurements. All AGNs were classified as either type 1 or type 2 using a random forest classifier (RFC) algorithm on a subset of known sources. All known photometric measurement uncertainties were incorporated via a simulation-based approach. Results. We present the reconstructed catalog of 21 050 AGNs with redshifts ranging from 0 < z < 2.5. We determined z estimations for 11 363 new sources, with both accuracy and outlier rates within 2%. The distinction between type 1 or type 2 AGNs could be identified with respective efficiencies of 94% and 89%. The estimated obscuration level, a proxy for AGN classification, of all sources is given in the dataset. The LBol, MBH, and λEdd values are given for 21 050 new sources with their estimated error. These results have been made publicly available. Conclusions. The release of this catalog will advance AGN studies by presenting key parameters of the accretion history of 6 dex in luminosity over a wide range of z. Similar applications of ML techniques using photometric data only will be essential in the future, with large datasets from eROSITA, JSWT, and the VRO poised to be released in the next decade. In a population of multiple protostellar systems with discs, the sub-population of circumbinary discs whose orbital plane is highly misaligned with respect to the binary's orbital plane constrains the initial distribution of orbital parameters of the whole population. We show that by measuring the polar disc fraction and the average orbital eccentricity in the polar discs, one can constrain the distributions of initial eccentricity and mutual inclination in multiple stellar systems at birth. The presence of distant protoplanets may explain the observed gaps in the dust emission of protoplanetary disks. Here, we derive a novel analytical model to describe the temporal decay of the pebble flux through a protoplanetary disk as the result of radial drift. This has allowed us to investigate the growth and migration of distant protoplanets throughout the lifespan of the disk. We find that Moon-mass protoplanets that formed early on can grow to their pebble isolation mass, between approximately 20 and 80 M⊕, within less than 1 Myr, in the 20–80 AU region around solar-like stars. The subsequent fast migration in the early stages of gas accretion, after pebble accretion ends, transports these giant planets into their final orbits at <10 AU. However, our pebble decay model allows us to include a new pathway that may trigger the transition from pebble accretion to gas accretion after the pebble flux has decayed substantially. With this pebble decay pathway, we show that it is also possible to form gas giants beyond 10 AU. The occurrence of these wide-orbit gas giants should be relatively low, since their core must attain sufficient mass to accrete gas before the pebble flux decays, while avoiding excessive migration. Since these gas giants do not reach the pebble isolation mass, their heavy element content is typically less than 10M⊕. Our results imply that the observed gaps in protoplanetary disks could be caused by distant protoplanets that reached the pebble isolation mass and then migrated, while gas giants in wide orbits, such as PDS 70 b and c, accreted their gas after the decay in the pebble flux. The hotspot emission of accreting millisecond pulsars (AMPs) undergoes scattering in the accretion flow between the disk inner radius and the neutron star surface. The scattering optical depth of the flow depends on the photon emission angle, which is a function of the pulse phase, and reaches its maximum when the hotspot is closest to the observer. At sufficiently large optical depths the observed pulse profile should develop a secondary minimum, the depth of which depends on the accretion rate and the emission geometry. Such a dip evolving with the accretion rate might explain the phase shift and pulse profile evolution observed in AMPs during outbursts. Accounting for scattering is important for accurate modeling of the AMP pulse profiles in order to improve the accuracy of determination of the neutron star parameters, such as their masses and radii. In this paper we present a simplified analytical model for the Thomson optical depth of the accretion funnel, and apply it to simulating the pulse profiles. We show that scattering in the accretion funnel has a significant effect on the pulse profiles at accretion rates of M ≳ 10−10M⊙yr−1. Context. Blazar AO 0235+164, located at a redshift of z = 0.94, has undergone several sharp multi-spectral-range flaring episodes over recent decades. In particular, the episodes that peaked in 2008 and 2015, which were subject to extensive multi-wavelength coverage, exhibited an interesting behavior. Aims. We study the actual origin of these two observed flares by constraining the properties of the observed photo-polarimetric variability as well as of the broadband spectral energy distribution and the observed time-evolution behavior of the source. We use ultra-high-resolution total-flux and polarimetric very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) imaging. Methods. The analysis of VLBI images allowed us to constrain kinematic and geometrical parameters of the 7 mm jet. We used the discrete correlation function to compute the statistical correlation and the delays between emission at different spectral ranges. The multi-epoch modeling of the spectral energy distributions allowed us to propose specific models of the emission; in particular, with the aim to model the unusual spectral features observed in this source in the X-ray region of the spectrum during strong multi spectral-range flares. Results. We find that these X-ray spectral features can be explained by an emission component originating in a separate particle distribution than the one responsible for the two standard blazar bumps. This is in agreement with the results of our correlation analysis, where we did not find a strong correlation between the X-ray and the remaining spectral ranges. We find that both external Compton-dominated and synchrotron self-Compton-dominated models are able to explain the observed spectral energy distributions. Context. Models of a planet-disk interaction are mainly based on 2D and 3D viscous hydrodynamic simulations. In such models, accretion is classically prescribed by an αv parameter which characterizes the turbulent radial transport of angular momentum in the disk. This accretion scenario has been questioned for a few years and an alternative paradigm has been proposed that involves the vertical transport of angular momentum by magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) winds. Aims. We revisit planet–disk interactions in the context of MHD wind-launching protoplanetary disks. In particular, we focus on the planet's ability to open a gap and produce meridional flows. The accretion, magnetic field, and wind torque in the gap are also explored, as well as the evaluation of the gravitational torque exerted by the disk onto the planet. Methods. We carried out high-resolution 3D global nonideal MHD simulations of a gaseous disk threaded by a large-scale vertical magnetic field harboring a planet in a fixed circular orbit using the code IDEFIX, which is accelerated with graphics processing units. We considered various planet masses (10 Earth masses, 1 Saturn mass, 1 Jupiter mass, and 3 Jupiter masses for a solar-mass star) and disk magnetizations (104 and 103 for the β-plasma parameter, defined as the ratio of the thermal pressure over the magnetic pressure). Results. We find that a gap opening always occurs for sufficiently massive planets, typically on the order of a few Saturn masses for β0 = 103, with deeper gaps when the planet mass increases and when the initial magnetization decreases. We propose an expression for the gap-opening criterion when accretion is dominated by MHD winds. We show that accretion is unsteady and comes from surface layers in the outer disk, bringing material directly toward the planet poles. A planet gap is a privileged region for the accumulation of a large-scale magnetic field, preferentially at the gap center or at the gap edges in some cases. This results in a fast accretion stream through the gap, which can become sonic at high magnetizations. The torque due to the MHD wind responds to the planet presence in a way that leads to a more intense wind in the outer gap compared to the inner gap. More precisely, for massive planets, the wind torque is enhanced as it is fed by the planet torque above the gap's outer edge, whereas the wind torque is seemingly diminished above the gap's inner edge due to the planet-induced deflection of magnetic field lines at the disk surface. This induces an asymmetric gap, both in depth and in width, that progressively erodes the outer gap edge, reducing the outer Lindblad torque and potentially reversing the migration direction of Jovian planets in magnetized disks after a few hundreds of orbits. For low-mass planets, we find strongly fluctuating gravitational torques that are mostly positive on average, indicating a stochastic outward migration. Conclusions. The presence of MHD winds strongly affects planet-disk interaction, both in terms of flow kinematics and protoplanet migration. This work illustrates the tight dependence between the planet torque, the wind torque, and magnetic field transport that is required to get the correct dynamics of such systems. In particular, many of the predictions from "effective" models that use parameterized wind torques are not recovered (such as gap formation criteria, the migration direction, and speed) in our simulations. Context. Previous observations of the isolated Class 0 source B335 have presented evidence of ongoing infall in various molecular lines, such as HCO+, HCN, and CO. There have been no confirmed observations of a rotationally supported disk on scales greater than ~12 au. Aims. The presence of an outflow in B335 suggests that a disk is also expected to be present or undergoing formation. To constrain the earliest stages of protostellar evolution and disk formation, we aim to map the region where gas falls inwards and observationally constrain its kinematics. Furthermore, we aim to put strong limits on the size and orientation of any disk-like structure in B335. Methods. We used high angular resolution 13CO data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and combined it with shorter-baseline archival data to produce a high-fidelity image of the infall in B335. We also revisited the imaging of high-angular resolution Band 6 continuum data to study the dust distribution in the immediate vicinity of B335. Results. Continuum emission shows an elliptical structure (10 by 7 au) with a position angle 5 degrees east of north, consistent with the expectation for a forming disk in B335. A map of the infall velocity (as estimated from the 13CO emission), shows evidence of asymmetric infall, predominantly from the north and south. Close to the protostar, infall velocities appear to exceed free-fall velocities. Three-dimensional (3D) radiative transfer models, where the infall velocity is allowed to vary within the infall region, may explain the observed kinematics. Conclusions. The data suggest that a disk has started to form in B335 and that gas is falling towards that disk. However, kinematically-resolved line data towards the disk itself is needed to confirm the presence of a rotationally supported disk around this young protostar. The high infall velocities we measured are not easily reconcilable with a magnetic braking scenario, suggesting that there is a pressure gradient that allows the infall velocity to vary in the region. Context. Particle-accelerating colliding-wind binaries (PACWBs) are systems that are formed by two massive and hot stars and produce nonthermal radiation. The key elements of these systems are fast winds and the shocks that they create when they collide. Binaries with nonaccreting young pulsars have also been detected as nonthermal emitters, again as a consequence of the wind–wind interaction. Black holes might produce nonthermal radiation by this mechanism if they accrete at super-Eddington rates. In such cases, the disk is expected to launch a radiation-driven wind, and if this wind has an equatorial component, it can collide with the companion star yielding a PACWB. These systems are supercritical colliding wind binaries. Aims. We aim to characterize the particle acceleration and nonthermal radiation produced by the collision of winds in binary systems composed of a superaccreting black hole and an early-type star. Methods. We estimated the terminal velocity of the disk-driven wind by calculating the spatial distribution of the radiation fields and their effect on disk particles. We then found the location of the wind collision region and calculated the timescales of energy gain and losses of relativistic particles undergoing diffusive particle acceleration. With this information, we were able to compute the associated spectral energy distribution of the radiation. We calculated a number of specific models with different parameters to explore this scenario. Results. We find that the interaction of winds can produce nonthermal emission from radio up to tens of GeV, with luminosities in the range of ∼1033–1035 erg s−1, which for the most part are contributed by electron synchrotron and inverse Compton radiation. Conclusions. We conclude that supercritical colliding wind binaries, such as some ultraluminous X-ray sources and some Galactic X-ray binaries, are capable of accelerating cosmic rays and producing nonthermal electromagnetic emission from radio to γ-rays, in addition to the thermal components. Aims. We aim to assess the complementarity between spectroscopic and interferometric observations in the characterisation of the inner star-disc interaction region of young stars. Methods. We used the MCFOST code to solve the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium problem of line formation in non-axisymmetric accreting magnetospheres. We computed the Brγ line profile originating from accretion columns for models with different magnetic obliquities. We also derived monochromatic synthetic images of the Brγ line-emitting region across the line profile. This spectral line is a prime diagnostic of magnetospheric accretion in young stars and is accessible with the long baseline near-infrared interferometer GRAVITY installed at the ESO Very Large Telescope Interferometer. Results. We derive Brγ line profiles as a function of rotational phase and compute interferometric observables, visibilities, and phases, from synthetic images. The line profile shape is modulated along the rotational cycle, exhibiting inverse P Cygni profiles at the time the accretion shock faces the observer. The size of the line's emission region decreases as the magnetic obliquity increases, which is reflected in a lower line flux. We apply interferometric models to the synthetic visibilities in order to derive the size of the line-emitting region. We find the derived interferometric size to be more compact than the actual size of the magnetosphere, ranging from 50 to 90% of the truncation radius. Additionally, we show that the rotation of the non-axisymmetric magnetosphere is recovered from the rotational modulation of the Brγ-to-continuum photo-centre shifts, as measured by the differential phase of interferometric visibilities. Conclusions. Based on the radiative transfer modelling of non-axisymmetric accreting magnetospheres, we show that simultaneous spectroscopic and interferometric measurements provide a unique diagnostic to determine the origin of the Brγ line emitted by young stellar objects and are ideal tools to probe the structure and dynamics of the star-disc interaction region. Context. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are usually discovered at X-ray or optical wavelengths through their transient nature. A characteristic spectral feature of X-ray detected TDEs is a 'supersoft' X-ray emission, not observed in any other extragalactic source, with the exception of a few rapidly variable hyperluminous X-ray sources (HLXs) or supersoft active galactic nuclei (AGN) that are distinguishable by their optical emission. Aims. The goal of our work is to find extragalactic supersoft sources associated with galactic centres. We expect this category to include overlooked TDEs, supersoft AGN, and nuclear HLXs. Finding such sources would allow for the study of extreme regime accretion on different black hole mass scales. Methods. We searched for supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs) by cross-correlating optical and X-ray catalogues to select extragalactic near-nuclear sources and we then filtered for very steep spectra (photon index Γ > 3) and high X-ray luminosities (LX > 1041 erg s−1). Results. With our blind search we retrieved about 60 sources, including 15 previously known supersoft AGN or TDEs, thus demonstrating the efficiency of our selection. Of the remaining sample, 36 sources are optically classified as AGN, although they show steeper-than-usual spectra. The remaining nine previously unknown sources show spectral properties consistent with emission by extremely soft-excess dominated AGN (five sources) or TDEs (four sources). An XMM-Newton follow-up observation of one of these sources confirmed its likely TDE nature. Conclusions. Our work is the first attempt to discover TDEs by their spectral features rather than their variability, and it has been successful in retrieving known TDEs and in discovering new extreme ultrasoft sources, including four new TDE candidates, one of which is confirmed via follow-up observations. We present the results of our studies on accretion disks in the proximity of astrophysical black holes. These disks can be of varying degrees of opacity, geometrical shapes, sizes, and volumes. The central compact object is a Schwarzschild or a Kerr black hole of various spin parameters. We describe the environment and the physics of the systems under examination and the disk models considered. We first investigate the effects of the spacetime rotation on photon trajectories. We then examine the radiation forces recorded at various points of the arrangement inside and outside the disk material, and in the inner, outer, and off-equatorial material orbits. We document and explore the radiation effects, which are revealed to be significant and positively consequential. Afterward, we inspect the possible imaging outcome of various types of black hole and accretion disk configurations, and we show our results for plots that could be used to estimate the central black hole spin in a system. Context. Models of planetary core growth by either planetesimal or pebble accretion are traditionally disconnected from the models of dust evolution and formation of the first gravitationally bound planetesimals. State-of-the-art models typically start with massive planetary cores already present. Aims. We aim to study the formation and growth of planetary cores in a pressure bump, motivated by the annular structures observed in protoplanetary disks, starting with submicron-sized dust grains. Methods. We connect the models of dust coagulation and drift, planetesimal formation in the streaming instability, gravitational interactions between planetesimals, pebble accretion, and planet migration into one uniform framework. Results. We find that planetesimals forming early at the massive end of the size distribution grow quickly, predominantly by pebble accretion. These few massive bodies grow on timescales of ~100 000 yr and stir the planetesimals that form later, preventing the emergence of further planetary cores. Additionally, a migration trap occurs, allowing for retention of the growing cores. Conclusions. Pressure bumps are favourable locations for the emergence and rapid growth of planetary cores by pebble accretion as the dust density and grain size are increased and the pebble accretion onset mass is reduced compared to a smooth-disc model. The investigation of emission line regions within active galaxies (AGNs) has a rich and extensive history, now extending to the use of AGNs and quasars as “standardizable” cosmological indicators, shedding light on the evolution of our universe. As we enter the era of advanced observatories, such as the successful launch of the JWST and the forthcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), the landscape of AGN exploration across cosmic epochs is poised for exciting advancements. In this work, we delve into recent developments in AGN variability research, anticipating the substantial influx of data facilitated by LSST. The article highlights recent strides made by the AGN Polish Consortium in their contributions to LSST. The piece emphasizes the role of quasars in cosmology, dissecting the intricacies of their calibration as standard candles. The primary focus centers on the relationship between the broad-line region size and luminosity, showcasing recent breakthroughs that enhance our comprehension of this correlation. These breakthroughs encompass a range of perspectives, including spectroscopic analyses, photoionization modeling, and collaborative investigations with other cosmological tools. The study further touches on select studies, underlining how the synergy of theoretical insights and advancements in observational capabilities has yielded deeper insights into these captivating cosmic entities.

We run numerical simulations of massive colliding wind binaries, and quantify the accretion onto the secondary under different conditions. We set 3D simulation of a LBV–WR system and vary the LBV mass loss rate to obtain different values of wind momentum ratio η. We show that the mean accretion rate for stationary systems fits a power law M acc ∝ η –1.6 for a wide range of η , until for extremely small η saturation in the accretion is reached. We find that the stronger the primary wind, the smaller the opening angle of the colliding wind structure (CWS), and compare it with previous analytical estimates. We demonstrate the efficiency of clumpy wind in penetrating the CWS and inducing smaller scale clumps that can be accreted. We propose that simulations of colliding winds can reveal more relations as the ones we found, and can be used to constrain stellar parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The next two decades are expected to open the door to the first coincident detections of electromagnetic (EM) and gravitational-wave (GW) signatures associated with massive black-hole (MBH) binaries heading for coalescence. These detections will launch a new era of multimessenger astrophysics by expanding this growing field to the low-frequency GW regime and will provide an unprecedented understanding of the evolution of MBHs and galaxies. They will also constitute fundamentally new probes of cosmology and would enable unique tests of gravity. The aim of this Living Review is to provide an introduction to this research topic by presenting a summary of key findings, physical processes and ideas pertaining to EM counterparts to MBH mergers as they are known at the time of this writing. We review current observational evidence for close MBH binaries, discuss relevant physical processes and timescales, and summarize the possible EM counterparts to GWs in the precursor, coalescence, and afterglow stages of a MBH merger. Context. It has been hypothesized that the location of Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAeBes) within the empirical relation between the inner disk radius (rin), inferred from K-band interferometry, and the stellar luminosity (L*), is related to the presence of the innermost gas, the disk-to-star accretion mechanism, the dust disk properties inferred from the spectral energy distributions (SEDs), or a combination of these effects. However, no general observational confirmation has been provided to date. Aims. This work aims to test whether the previously proposed hypotheses do, in fact, serve as a general explanation for the distribution of HAeBes in the size–luminosity diagram. Methods. GRAVITY/VLTI spectro-interferometric observations at ~2.2 μm have been obtained for five HBes representing two extreme cases concerning the presence of innermost gas and accretion modes. V590 Mon, PDS 281, and HD 94509 show no excess in the near-ultraviolet, Balmer region of the spectra (ΔDB), indicative of a negligible amount of inner gas and disk-to-star accretion, whereas DG Cir and HD 141926 show such strong ΔDB values that cannot be reproduced from magnetospheric accretion, but probably come from the alternative boundary layer mechanism. In turn, the sample includes three Group I and two Group II stars based on the Meeus et al. SED classification scheme. Additional data for these and all HAeBes resolved through K-band interferometry have been compiled from the literature and updated using Gaia EDR3 distances, almost doubling previous samples used to analyze the size–luminosity relation. Results. We find no general trend linking the presence of gas inside the dust destruction radius or the accretion mechanism with the location of HAeBes in the size–luminosity diagram. Similarly, our data do not support the more recent hypothesis linking such a location and the SED groups. Underlying trends are present and must be taken into account when interpreting the size–luminosity correlation. In particular, it cannot be statistically ruled out that this correlation is affected by dependencies of both L* and rin on the wide range of distances to the sources. Still, it is argued that the size–luminosity correlation is most likely to be physically relevant in spite of the previous statistical warning concerning dependencies on distance. Conclusions. Different observational approaches have been used to test the main scenarios proposed to explain the scatter of locations of HAeBes in the size–luminosity diagram. Context. Massive stars form in magnetized and turbulent environments and are often located in stellar clusters. The accretion and outflows mechanisms associated with forming massive stars and the origin of the stellar multiplicity of their system are poorly understood. Aims. We study the effect of magnetic fields and turbulence on the accretion mechanism of massive protostars and their multiplicity. We also focus on disk formation as a prerequisite for outflow launching. Methods. We present a series of four radiation-magnetohydrodynamical simulations of the collapse of a massive magnetized, turbulent core of 100 M⊙ with the adaptive-mesh-refinement code RAMSES, including a hybrid radiative transfer method for stellar irradiation and ambipolar diffusion. We varied the Mach and Alfvénic Mach numbers to probe sub- and super-Alfvénic turbulence and sub- and supersonic turbulence regimes. Results. Sub-Alfvénic turbulence leads to single stellar systems, and super-Alfvénic turbulence leads to binary formation from disk fragmentation following the collision of spiral arms, with mass ratios of 1.1–1.6 and a separation of several hundred AU that increases with initial turbulent support and with time. In these runs, infalling gas reaches the individual disks through a transient circumbinary structure. Magnetically regulated, thermally dominated (plasma beta β > 1) Keplerian disks form in all runs, with sizes 100–200 AU and masses 1–8 M⊙. The disks around primary and secondary sink particles have similar properties. We obtain mass accretion rates of ~10−4M⊙ yr−1 onto the protostars and observe higher accretion rates onto the secondary stars than onto their primary star companion. The primary disk orientation is found to be set by the initial angular momentum carried by turbulence rather than by magnetic fields. Even without turbulence, axisymmetry and north–south symmetry with respect to the disk plane are broken by the interchange instability and thermally dominated streamers, respectively. Conclusions. Small (≲300 AU) massive protostellar disks such as those that are frequently observed today can so far only be reproduced in the presence of (moderate) magnetic fields with ambipolar diffusion, even in a turbulent medium. The interplay between magnetic fields and turbulence sets the multiplicity of stellar clusters. Galactic transient black hole candidate (BHC) MAXI J1535-571 was discovered on 2017 September 02 simultaneously by MAXI/GSC and Swift/BAT instruments. It has also been observed by India's first multi-wavelength astronomy-mission satellite AstroSat, during the rising phase of its 2017-18 outburst. We make both the spectral and the temporal analysis of the source during 2017 September 12–17 using data of AstroSat's Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) in the energy range of 3–40 keV to infer the accretion flow properties of the source. Spectral analysis is done with the physical two-component advective flow (TCAF) solution-based fits file. From the nature of the variation of the TCAF model fitted physical flow parameters, we conclude and confirm that the source was in the intermediate spectral state during our analysis period. We observe sharp type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the frequency range of ∼ 1.75 – 2.81 Hz . For a better understanding of the nature and evolution of these type-C QPOs, a dynamic study of the power density spectra is done. We also investigate the origin of these QPOs from the shock oscillation model. We find that non-satisfaction of Rankine-Hugoniot conditions for non-dissipative shocks and not their resonance oscillations is the cause of the observed type-C QPOs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the collisional mean free path of charged particles in hot accretion flows can be significantly larger than the typical length-scale of the accretion flows, the gas pressure is anisotropic to magnetic field lines. For such a large collisional mean free path, the resistive dissipation can also play a key role in hot accretion flows. In this paper, we study the dynamics of resistive hot accretion flows in the presence of anisotropic pressure. We present a set of self-similar solutions where the flow variables are assumed to be a function only of radius. Our results show that the radial and rotational velocities and the sound speed increase considerably with the strength of anisotropic pressure. The increase in infall velocity and in sound speed are more significant if the resistive dissipation is taken into account. We find that such changes depend on the field strength. Our results indicate that the resistive heating is 10 % of the heating by the work done by anisotropic pressure when the strength of anisotropic pressure is 0.1. This value becomes higher when the strength of anisotropic pressure reduces. The increase in disk temperature can lead to heating and acceleration of the electrons in such flows. It helps us to explain the origin of phenomena such as the flares in Galactic Center Sgr A*. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Astrophysical disks are likely embedded in an ambient vertical magnetic field generated by its environment. This ambient field is known to drive magneto-rotational turbulence in the disk bulk, but it is also responsible for launching magnetised outflows at the origin of astrophysical jets. Yet, the interplay between turbulence and outflows is not understood. In particular, the vertical structure and long-term (secular) evolution of such a system lack quantitative predictions. It is, nevertheless, this secular evolution which is proposed to explain time variability in many accreting systems such as FuOr, X-ray binaries, and novae like systems. Aims. We seek to constraint the structure and long-term evolution of turbulent astrophysical disks subject to magnetised outflows in the non-relativistic regime. More specifically we aim to characterise the mechanism driving accretion, the dynamics of the disk atmosphere, the role played by the outflow, and the long-term evolution of mass and magnetic flux distributions. Methods. We computed and analysed global 3D ideal magnetohydrynamic (MHD) simulations of an accretion disk threaded by a large-scale magnetic field. We measured the turbulent state of the system by Reynolds averaging the ideal MHD equations and evaluate the role of the turbulent terms in the equilibrium of the system. We then computed the transport of mass, angular momentum, and magnetic fields in the disk to characterise its secular evolution. Finally, we performed a parameter exploration survey in order to characterise how the transport properties depend on the disk properties. Results. We find that weakly magnetised disks drive jets that carry a small fraction of the disk angular momentum away. The mass-weighted accretion speed remains subsonic, although there is always an upper turbulent atmospheric region where transsonic accretion takes place. We show that this turbulence is driven by a strongly magnetised version of the magneto-rotational instability. The internal disk structure therefore appears drastically different from the conventional hydrostatic picture. We expect that the turbulent atmosphere region will lead to non-thermal features in the emission spectra from compact objects. In addition, we show that the disk is subject to a secular viscous-type instability, which leads to the formation of long-lived ring-like structures in the disk surface density distribution. This instability is likely connected to the magnetic field transport. Finally, we show that for all of the parameters explored, the ambient magnetic field is always dragged inward in the disk at a velocity which increases with the disk magnetisation. Beyond a threshold on the latter, the disk undergoes a profound radial readjustment. It leads to the formation of an inner accretion-ejection region with a supersonic mass-weighted accretion speed and where the magnetic field distribution becomes steady and reaches a magnitude near equipartition with the thermal pressure. This inner structure shares many properties with the jet emitting disk model. Overall, these results pave the way for quantitative self-consistent secular disk models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the effects of large‐scale magnetic fields on the dynamics of charged particles near a rotating black hole. We consider a scenario in which the initially neutral particles on geodesic orbits in the equatorial plane become ionized, and hence they are destabilized by the charging process. Fraction of charged particles are then accelerated out of the equatorial plane and then follow jet‐like trajectories with relativistic velocities. We explore nonaxisymmetric systems in which the magnetic field is inclined with respect to the black hole spin. We study the system numerically in order to locate the zones of escaping trajectories and compute the terminal escape velocity. By breaking the axial symmetry, we notice increasing fraction of unbound orbits which allow for acceleration to ultrarelativistic velocities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Binary systems of Population III can evolve to microquasars when one of the stars collapses into a black hole. When the compact object accretes matter at a rate greater than the Eddington rate, powerful jets and winds driven by strong radiation pressure should form. We investigate the structure of the jet-wind system for a model of Population III microquasar on scales beyond the jet-wind formation region. Using relativistic hydrodynamic simulations we find that the ratio of kinetic power between the jet and the disk wind determines the configuration of the system. When the power is dominated by the wind, the jet fills a narrow channel, collimated by the dense outflow. When the jet dominates the power of the system, part of its energy is diverted turning the wind into a quasi-equatorial flow, while the jet widens. From the results of our simulations, we implement semi-analytical calculations of the impact of the quasi-equatorial wind on scales of the order of the size of the binary system. Our results indicate that Population III microquasars might inject gamma rays and relativistic particles into the early intergalactic medium, contributing to its reionization at large distances from the binary system. Context. There is growing evidence that massive stars grow by disk accretion in a similar way to their low-mass counterparts. Early in evolution, these disks can achieve masses that are comparable to the current stellar mass, and therefore the forming disks are highly susceptible to gravitational fragmentation. Aims. We investigate the formation and early evolution of an accretion disk around a forming massive protostar, focussing on its fragmentation physics. To this end, we follow the collapse of a molecular cloud of gas and dust, the formation of a massive protostar, the formation of its circumstellar disk, and the formation and evolution of the disk fragments. Methods. We used a grid-based, self-gravity radiation hydrodynamics code including a sub-grid module for stellar evolution and dust evolution. We purposely do not use a sub-grid module for fragmentation such as sink particles to allow for all paths of fragment formation and destruction, but instead we keep the spatial grid resolution high enough to properly resolve the physical length scales of the problem, namely the pressure scale height and Jeans length of the disk. Simulations are performed on a grid in spherical coordinates with a logarithmic spacing of the grid cells in the radial direction and a cosine distribution of the grid cells in the polar direction, focusing the spatial resolution on the disk midplane. As a consequence, roughly 25% of the total number of grid cells, corresponding to ~26 million grid cells, are used to model the disk physics. These constitute the highest resolution simulations performed up to now on disk fragmentation around a forming massive star with the physics considered here. For a better understanding of the effects of spatial resolution and to compare our high-resolution results with previous lower resolution studies in the literature, we perform the same simulation at five different resolutions, each run differing in resolution from its predecessor by a factor of two. Results. The cloud collapses and a massive (proto)star is formed in its center surrounded by a fragmenting Keplerian-like accretion disk with spiral arms. The fragments have masses of ~1 M⊙, and their continuous interactions with the disk, spiral arms, and other fragments result in eccentric orbits. Fragments form hydrostatic cores surrounded by secondary disks with spiral arms that also produce new fragments. We identified several mechanisms of fragment formation, interaction, and destruction. Central temperatures of the fragments can reach the hydrogen dissociation limit, form second Larson cores, and evolve into companion stars. Based on this, we study the multiplicity predicted by the simulations and find approximately six companions at different distances from the primary: from possible spectroscopic multiples, to companions at distances between 1000 and 2000 au. Context. We investigate small-scale light variations in V646 Pup occurring on timescales of days, weeks, and years. Aims. We aim to investigate whether this variability is similar to that observed in FU Ori. Methods. We observed V646 Pup on six occasions at the SAAO and CTIO between 2013 and 2018 with Johnson and Sloan filters, typically using a one-day cadence maintained for two to four weeks. We also utilised the public-domain 1512-day-long ASAS-SN light curve and TESS photometry obtained in 2019 over 24.1 days with a 30 min cadence. New SAAO low-resolution spectra assist in updating major disc parameters, while the archival high-resolution Keck spectra are used to search for temporal changes in the disc rotational profiles. Results. The ground-based observations confirm the constantly decreasing brightness of V646 Pup at the rate of 0.018 mag yr−1. Precise i-band sensitive TESS data show that the slight, 0.005−0.01 mag, light variations imposed on this general trend do consist of a few independent wave trains of an apparently time-coherent nature. Assuming that this is typical situation, based on an analysis of colour–magnitude diagrams obtained for earlier epochs, we were able to make a preliminarily inference that the bulk of the light changes observed could be due to the rotation of disc photosphere inhomogeneities, arising between 10–12 R⊙ from the star. We do not exclude the possibility that these inhomogeneities could also manifest themselves in the rotational profiles of the disc, as obtained from the high-resolution spectra. Assuming Keplerian rotation of these inhomogeneities, we give a preliminary determination of the stellar mass at 0.7–0.9 M⊙. Conclusions. Over certain weeks, at least, V646 Pup has shown time-coherent light variability pattern(s) that could be explained by the rotation of an inhomogeneous disc photosphere. Changing-look active galactic nuclei (CL-AGNs) as a new subpopulation challenge some fundamental physics of AGNs because the timescales of the phenomenon can hardly be reconciled with accretion disk models. In this Letter, we demonstrate the extreme case: close binaries of supermassive black holes (CB-SMBHs) with high eccentricities are able to trigger the CL transition through one orbit. In this scenario, binary black holes build up their own mini-disks by peeling gas off the inner edges of the circumbinary disk during the apastron phase, after which they tidally interact with the disks during the periastron phase to efficiently exchange angular momentum within one orbital period. For mini-disks rotating retrograde to the orbit, the tidal torque rapidly squeezes the tidal parts of the mini-disks into a much smaller radius, which rapidly results in higher accretion and short flares before the disks decline into type-2 AGNs. Prograde-rotation mini-disks gain angular momentum from the binary and rotate outward, which causes a rapid turn-off from type-1 to type-2. Turn-on occurs around the apastron phase. CB-SMBHs control cycle transitions between type-1 and type-2 with orbital periods but allow diverse properties in CL-AGN light curves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Young stars interact with their accretion disk through their strong magnetosphere. Aims. We aim to investigate the magnetospheric accretion/ejection process in the young stellar system DoAr 44 (V2062 Oph). Methods. We monitored the system over several rotational cycles, combining high-resolution spectropolarimetry at both optical and near-IR wavelengths with long-baseline near-IR inteferometry and multicolor photometry. Results. We derive a rotational period of 2.96 d from the system's light curve, which is dominated by stellar spots. We fully characterize the central star's properties from the high signal-to-noise, high-resolution optical spectra we obtained during the campaign. DoAr 44 is a young 1.2 M⊙ star, moderately accreting from its disk (Ṁacc = 6.5 10−9M⊙ yr−1), and seen at a low inclination (i ≃ 30°). Several optical and near-IR line profiles probing the accretion funnel flows (Hα, Hβ, HeI 1083 nm, Paβ) and the accretion shock (HeI 587.6 nm) are modulated at the stellar rotation period. The most variable line profile is HeI 1083 nm, which exhibits modulated redshifted wings that are a signature of accretion funnel flows, as well as deep blueshifted absorptions indicative of transient outflows. The Zeeman-Doppler analysis suggests the star hosts a mainly dipolar magnetic field, inclined by about 20° onto the spin axis, with an intensity reaching about 800 G at the photosphere, and up to 2 ± 0.8 kG close to the accretion shock. The magnetic field appears strong enough to disrupt the inner disk close to the corotation radius, at a distance of about 4.6 R⋆ (0.043 au), which is consistent with the 5 R⋆ (0.047 au) upper limit we derived for the size of the magnetosphere in our Paper I from long baseline interferometry. Conclusions. DoAr 44 is a pre-transitional disk system, exhibiting a 25–30 au gap in its circumstellar disk, with the inner and outer disks being misaligned. On a scale of 0.1 au or less, our results indicate that the system is steadily accreting from its inner disk through its tilted dipolar magnetosphere. We conclude that in spite of a highly structured disk on the large scale, perhaps the signature of ongoing planetary formation, the magnetospheric accretion process proceeds unimpeded at the star-disk interaction level. Observations of the population of cold Jupiter planets (r >1 AU) show that nearly all of these planets orbit their host star on eccentric orbits. For planets up to a few Jupiter masses, eccentric orbits are thought to be the outcome of planet–planet scattering events taking place after gas dispersal. We simulated the growth of planets via pebble and gas accretion as well as the migration of multiple planetary embryos in their gas disc. We then followed the long-term dynamical evolution of our formed planetary system up to 100 Myr after gas disc dispersal. We investigated the importance of the initial number of protoplanetary embryos and different damping rates of eccentricity and inclination during the gas phase for the final configuration of our planetary systems. We constrained our model by comparing the final dynamical structure of our simulated planetary systems to that of observed exoplanet systems. Our results show that the initial number of planetary embryos has only a minor impact on the final orbital eccentricity distribution of the giant planets, as long as the damping of eccentricity and inclination is efficient. If the damping is inefficient (slow), systems with a larger initial number of embryos harbour larger average eccentricities. In addition, for slow damping rates, we observe that scattering events are already common during the gas disc phase and that the giant planets that formed in these simulations match the observed giant planet eccentricity distribution best. These simulations also show that massive giant planets (above Jupiter mass) on eccentric orbits are less likely to host inner super-Earths as they get lost during the scattering phase, while systems with less massive giant planets on nearly circular orbits should harbour systems of inner super-Earths.
