The article provides information on a study that examined the composition of arthropods associated with a silvopastoral system leucaena-guinea grass in different exploitation times. Four evolutionary times were identified in an area in which leucaena and guinea grass were gradually introduced. A model of simple classification was used in this study. Results of the study showed that the abundance of species had a wider distribution during the rainy period. The study also found that Heteropsylla Cubana was the most abundant species in the dry season.

Para evaluar el efecto del follaje de plantas tropicales en el control de la producción de metano y la población de protozoos, se condujo un experimento en condiciones in vitro, donde se utilizó el follaje de 12 árboles y se comparó con el control de pasto estrella (Cynodon nlemfuensis). Las plantas evaluadas fueron: Leucaena leucocephala, Gliricidia sepium, Samanea saman, Albizia lebbeck, Azadirachta indica, Moringa oleifera, Pithecellobium dulce, Cordia alba, Guazuma ulmifolia, Enterolobium cyclocarpum, Tithonia diversifolia material vegetal (mv) 10 y Tithonia diversifolia mv 23. Se determinó la producción de metano, así como la población de protozoos. De acuerdo con la capacidad de producir metano, las plantas se integraron en cuatro grupos: el testigo; las plantas capaces de reducir en mayor magnitud la producción de metano en el rumen (2); el grupo integrado por Enterolobium cyclocarpum (3) y las plantas que pueden ser utilizadas para reducir la metanogénesis ruminal, pero en menor magnitud (4). Todas las plantas redujeron la población de protozoos y sus poblaciones fueron: 4,5; 3,7; 4,5; 4,6; 4,6; 4,5; 4, 4,6; 6; 6; 5; 6 y 9 x 106 células.mL-1 para las plantas S. saman, A lebbeck, T. diversifolia mv-23, C. alba, L. leucocephala, P. dulce, M. oleifera, G. sepium, G. ulmifolia, T. diversifolia mv-10, E. cyclocarpum y C. nlemfuensis, respectivamente. In order to evaluate the effect of tropical plant foliage on the control of methane production and protozoa population, an experiment under in vitro conditions was carried out, where the foliage of 12 trees was used and compared to the control of Star grass (Cynodon nlemfuensis). Plants evaluated were: Leucaena leucocephala, Gliricidia sepium, Samanea saman, Albizia lebbeck, Azadirachta indica, Moringa oleifera, Pithecellobium dulce, Cordia alba, Guazuma ulmifolia, Enterolobium cyclocarpum, Tithonia diversifolia plant material (pm) 10 and Tithonia diversifolia pm 23. Methane production and protozoa population were determined. Regarding the ability of producing methane, plants were divided into four groups: (1) control, (2) plants able to reduce, at a great extent, methane production in the rumen, (3) group integrated by Enterolobium cyclocarpum, and (4) plants that can be used for reducing the ruminal methanogenesis, but at a low extent. In order to assess highlighted materials of Tithonia diversifolia an experiment was conducted for two years under dry conditions and simulated grazing. The materials were collected in the center-west of Cuba. A random block design with factorial arrangement and four repetitions was applied. The factors were: A) plant materials (3, 5, 10, 13, 16, 17, 23, 24 and 25) and B) plantation distance (0, 75, 1.0 and 1.5 m). The grazing was conducted with dry cows and instantaneous stocking rate of 38 LAU/ha/d, with occupation time from one to two days, and that of resting from 35 to 70 d for the rainy and dry season, respectively. The leaf weight per plant was measured in DM grams; the weight of 100 leaves in GM g, the leaf yield in 5 m in DM kilograms and the percent of animals eating. There was interaction for the factors under study during the dry season. During that, the plant material 17 had the lowest weight of leaf per plant (P < 0.01) for any of the plantation distances. The highest value was achieved by the material 3 at 0.75 m. The leaf yield in 5 m (P < 0.001) was better in plant material 3, planted at 0.75 m between furrows and did not differ from the collection 17, and the highest in the materials 5, 23 and 24. There was no interaction between the factors under study in the rainy season. The distance between furrows at 1.50 m reached the highest yield (P < 0.001). The weight of 100 leaves GM and that of the leaf in 5 m had better performance (P < 0.001) in collections 3, 23 and 3, 10 and 23, respectively. The animals did not surpass 20% of the grazing time (P < 0.01) for the materials 24 and 17, while the rest surpassed this value. The materials 10, 13 and 23 highlighted, with values next to 30%. The increase of the distance between furrows (P < 0.01) increased the amount of animals eating. It is concluded that plant material 17 should not be used as grazing plant. Material 3 should be the one used for this purpose during the whole year and, in the rainy season, the materials 10 and 23, as well as the 24 in the dry one. The materials 5, 10, 13, 23, 24 and 25 reached an intermediate performance. The increase of the distance between furrows (0.75 vs 1.50 m) favored the amount of animals eating. The results show the possibility of having materials of tithonia collected in Cuba, for its grazing for bovines. At the same time, they suggest the use of other shrubs in silvopastoral systems. Para estudiar el crecimiento de 29 materiales de Tithonia diversifolia, recolectados en el centro-oeste de Cuba, se condujo durante dos años un experimento mediante un diseño totalmente aleatorizado, con diez repeticiones y en condiciones de secano. Sin afectar el crecimiento de las plantas, después del corte de la plantación en cada estación climática, se determinaron los indicadores número de brotes del tallo original, altura del brote del tallo original (m), grosor del brote (mm), altura de la primera hoja (cm), número de flores, número de hojas verdes, amarillas secas, caídas y totales. Todos se establecieron cada quince días, por espacio de 16 semanas. El análisis multivariado mostró que en la estación lluviosa se explica 81.16 % de la variabilidad, mientras en la seca 94.34 %. Las variables de mayor preponderancia fueron las hojas totales, verdes, amarillas, secas y caídas/planta y tallos/plantas, todas con relación positiva. Durante las lluvias, los dos conglomerados que tuvieron valores mayores en los indicadores medidos mostraron que en el componente principal hoja, como en el componente principal estructura, se recogen en los materiales 1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,22,23,24 y 26 (grupo 1). Esto puede ser indicativo de que en este período la manifestación de las medidas es similar. No obstante, existió otro grupo donde se destacó el componente hoja, registrándose en los materiales 14,17 y 29 (grupo 3), y en la estructura en 4, 13, 19, 21,25 y 27 (grupo 2). En el período seco, se destacan en ambos componentes, los materiales clasificados como 1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,19,21,22,23,24,25,26,28 (grupo 1)y 29 ( grupo 4). En este período, no existen materiales que se aparten de este patrón común de manifestación de los indicadores vegetales medidos, lo que representa 68.9 % del total de los materiales recolectados. En la estación lluviosa, el grupo 3 presentó los mayores valores del desarrollo, y se indicaron como caracteres no deseados las cifras alcanzadas para el grosor del tallo (7.3 mm), número de flores /planta (152) y número de hojas caídas/planta (414). En la estación seca, el grupo 4 presentó los mayores valores para todas las medidas tomadas. Esto no siempre es positivo para indicadores como número de hojas caídas (558) y altura de la primera hoja verde (52 cm). Se informó, por primera vez, acerca de las características del desarrollo de materiales recolectados de Tithonia diversifolia en diferentes zonas de Cuba. La variabilidad encontrada se pudiera utilizar estratégicamente en futuros programas de mejoramiento varietal. The bromatological performance of the herbaceous stratum (80 % of Guinea grass) in areas of a silvopastoral system Leucaena leucocephala/ Panicum maximum, sown in 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998, was studied during the period between 2000 and 2002. The design was complete random. The indicators were: percentage of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), ashes, and digestibility of the organic matter. The results showed decline (P < 0.001) for the DM percentage, with higher time of exploitation of the silvopastoral area. There was stability in the seasons, in both climatic periods, during the sowing in 1995. The protein content in Guinea grass increased significantly with the highest values (12.2, 11.35, 10.68, and 7.56 %) during the rainy season of 2002, for the sowings in 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998, respectively. However, in the area with lower time of exploitation (1998), the DM percentage did not show differences compared with the sampling during the dry season in 2002. There was decline (P < 0.001) in the CF percentages between the rainy season in 2000 and in 2002, for the sowings in 1995 and 1996. This effect was not seen in the sowings in 1997 and 1998. The digestibility was higher (P < 0.05) with the evolution of the system in the sowing in 1995 (52.97 vs 54.80 %), when comparing the two samplings in the rainy season. In the rest of the sowing years, there were only seasonal differences. It is concluded that, with the evolution of the silvopastoral system, there is important stability in the bromatological characteristics of Guinea grass, which are reflected markedly up to 8th year of exploitation. Durante el período de 2000 a 2002 se estudió el comportamiento bromatológico del estrato herbáceo (80 % de guinea) en áreas de un sistema silvopastoril Leucaena leucocephala/Panicum maximum, sembradas en 1995, 1996, 1997 y 1998. El diseño fue completamente aleatorizado. Los indicadores medidos fueron: porcentaje de materia seca (MS), proteína bruta (PB), fibra bruta (FB), cenizas (CEN) y digestibilidad de la materia orgánica (DMO). Los resultados mostraron disminución (P < 0.001) para el porcentaje de MS, con mayor tiempo de explotación del silvopastoreo. Se evidenció estabilidad en las estaciones, en ambos períodos climáticos, durante la siembra realizada en 1995. El contenido de proteína en la guinea aumentó significativamente con los mayores valores (12.2, 11.35, 10.68 y 7.56 %) durante la lluvia de 2002, para las siembras realizadas en 1995, 1996, 1997 y 1998, respectivamente. Sin embargo, en el área con menor tiempo de explotación (1998) el porcentaje de MS no mostró diferencias con respecto al muestro realizado durante la seca de 2002. Se observó disminución (P < 0.001) de los porcentajes de FB entre la lluvia del 2000 y del 2002, para las siembras realizadas en 1995 y 1996. Este efecto no se aprecia en las siembras del año 1997 y 1998. La digestibilidad (DMO) fue mayor (P < 0.05) con la evolución del sistema en la siembra de 1995 (52.97 vs 54.80 %), al comparar los dos muestreos en la época de lluvia. En el resto de los años de siembra sólo se encontraron diferencias estacionales. Se concluye que con la evolución del silvopastoreo se alcanza una estabilidad importante en las características bromatológicas de la guinea, las cuales se reflejan de forma marcada hasta el octavo año de explotación. In order to study the influence of the utilization time of a silvopastoral system leucaena-Guinea grass on the soil chemical properties, an initial diagnosis was performed in areas with this plant association. Four sowing years were identified: 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1997, corresponding to 6, 5, 4, and 3 utilization years, respectively. A random block design was used. The content of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca) and organic matter (OM) was determined in each of the soil samples. In general, in all years of utilization, favorable evolution of OM was found with values superior to 4 % at the end of the study, without significant increases in the two areas with lower exploitation time. The percentage of N decreased (P < 0.001) only in the treatment of lower occupation time sown in 1998 and increased (0.24 vs 0.33, 0.21 vs 0.31, and 0.19 vs 0.29) for the sowings of 1995, 1996, and 1997, respectively, with the evolution of the system. The contents of P and Ca in each of the sowing years were high and showed significant decrease (321.6 vs 165.4 and 238.7 vs 114.1 ppm) in the sowings of 1996 and 1998 for the phosphorus and calcium (3.68 vs 2.64 and 3.40 vs 2.22 %) in the areas with longer exploitation time (1995 and 1996). The results of this paper proved that with the evolution of the system leucaena-Guinea grass, the changes occurring in the chemical components of the soil did not deteriorate its fertility, but improved it. With the use of the principal components as technique of multivariate analysis, the indicators of higher contribution to the variability of a silvopastoral system leucaena-Guinea grass were identified at the time the biomass production was affected. Two areas sown in gradual form in 1996 and 1997 were used and compared between themselves with the same exploitation times (4th and 5th year). The indicators evaluated were: number of tufts m-2 , height, perimeter, and availability of the grass and the height, diameter of the stem, slope, and availability of leucaena. It was observed that the silvopastoral system leucaena-Guinea grass keeps a similar performance when not finding differences between the areas, with the same time of exploitation of the system. In both cases, during the 5 year of exploitation, decreased the productivity of the silvopastoral system, with biomass availability that did not attain 2 t DM ha-1 rotation-1, quite lower than that obtained during the 4 year when 2.06 and 2.27 t DM ha-1 rotation-1 were attained for the sowing of 1996 and 1997, respectively. The analysis of principal components showed that only 4 components explained 74 % of the productive variability of the system. The yield indicators in the tree component, with Eigen value of 5.89, were those of greatest importance due to their grouping in the first principal component with coefficients higher than 0.75, and they explained 32.8 % of the variation. The availability of Guinea grass and its dry weight per plant, together with the total availability, contributed the most in 18 % of the variation in the second principal component. In the third, the number of tufts m-2, of negative form, and in the fourth, the number of tillers plant-1 in Guinea grass, of positive form, were the indicators contributing the most. Both, together, accounted for only 23 % of the variability of the system. It is concluded that, from the productive point of view, the indicators that should be monitored in a leucaena-Guinea grass silvopastoral system, in the first place, are related mainly to the tree component because they are the indicators contributing the most to the productive variability of the system. Para estudiar la influencia del tiempo de utilización de un silvopastoreo leucaena--guinea en las propiedades químicas del suelo, se realizó un diagnóstico inicial en áreas con la asociación y se identificaron 4 años de siembra: 1995, 1996, 1997 y 1998, que se correspondieron con 6, 5, 4 y 3 años de utilización, respectivamente. Se empleó un diseño completamente aleatorizado y en cada una de las muestras de suelo se determinó el contenido de nitrógeno (N), fósforo (P), calcio (Ca) y materia orgánica (MO). En todos los años de utilización se encontró, de forma general, evolución favorable de la MO con valores superiores a 4 % al finalizar el estudio, sin incrementos significativos en las dos áreas con menor tiempo de explotación. El porcentaje de N, sólo disminuyó (P < 0.001) en el tratamiento de menor tiempo de ocupación sembrado en 1998 y aumentó (0.24 vs 0.33, 0.21 vs 0.31 y 0.19 vs 0.29) para las siembras de 1995, 1996 y 1997, respectivamente, con la evolución del sistema. Los contenidos de P y Ca en cada uno de los años de siembra fueron altos y mostraron disminución significativa (321.6 vs165.4 y 238.7 vs 114.1 ppm) en las siembras de 1996 y 1998 para el fósforo y para el calcio (3.68 vs 2.64 y 3.40 vs 2.22 %) en las áreas con mayor tiempo de explotación (1995 y 1996). Los resultados de este trabajo demostraron que con la evolución del sistema leucaena-guinea los cambios que ocurren en los componentes químicos del suelo no deterioran su fertilidad, sino la mejora. Con el empleo de componentes principales, como técnica de análisis multivariado, se identificaron los indicadores que mayor aporte realizan a la variabilidad de un sistema silvopastoril leucaena-guinea en el momento que se afectaba la producción de biomasa. Se utilizaron dos áreas que se sembraron de forma escalonada en 1996 y 1997 y se compararon entre sí con iguales tiempos de explotación (4to y 5to año). Los indicadores evaluados fueron: número de macollas m-2 , altura, perímetro y disponibilidad para la gramínea y la altura, diámetro del tallo, inclinación y disponibilidad en la leucaena. Se observó que el silvopastoreo leucaena-guinea mantiene comportamiento similar al no encontrase diferencias entre las áreas, con el mismo tiempo de explotación del sistema. En ambos casos, durante el 5to año de explotación, decreció la productividad del silvopastoreo, con disponibilidad de biomasa que no alcanzó las 2 t MS ha-1 rotación-1 , muy inferior a la obtenida durante el 4to año cuando se alcanzó 2.06 y 2.27 t MS ha-1 rotación-1 para la siembra de 1996 y 1997, respectivamente. El análisis de componentes principales mostró que solo 4 componentes explicaron el 74 % de la variabilidad productiva del sistema. Se pudo apreciar que los indicadores del rendimiento en el componente árbol, con valor propio de 5.89, fueron los de mayor importancia al agruparse en la primera componente principal con coeficientes superiores a 0.75 y explican el 32.8 % de la variación que ocurre. La disponibilidad de la guinea y su peso seco por planta, conjuntamente con la disponibilidad total, realizaron los mayores aportes en el 18 % de la variación en la segunda componente principal. En la tercera, el número de macollas m-2 , de forma negativa, y en la cuarta el número de hijos planta-1 en la guinea, de forma positiva, fueron los indicadores que más contribuyeron y ambos en conjunto solo explicaron el 23 % de la variabilidad del sistema. Se concluye que, desde el punto de vista productivo, los indicadores que deben ser controlados en un sistema silvopastoril leucaena-guinea, en primera instancia, están relacionados principalmente con el componente árbol porque son los indicadores que mayor aporte realizan a la variabilidad productiva del sistema. The shade effect on the productive performance of the Guinea grass was studied in a silvopastoral system with leucaena in different exploitation times (6, 5 and 4 years). In each one of them, three contrasting treatments were identified: plants exposed to the sun, plants under partial shade and plants under total shade. For the data analysis, a complete random design was used in factorial arrangement (3 x 2) combining the treatments and the sampling years (1 and 2). In the herbaceous stratum, the following indicators were evaluated: availability, plant height, tuft perimeter, number of tillers plant-1, ratio leaf stem-1, index of specific foliar area, dead material and percentage of DM plant-1, as well as the botanical composition of the area in the system. The indicators did not show interaction between the different shade conditions and the years of the study for the different exploitation times of the system. In most of the indicators, the principal effects only indicated difference between the sampling years. The availability of Guinea grass did not affect any of the evolutional times of the system, but there was indeed increase from 1.23 to 1.78 t of DM ha-1 rotation-1 and from 1.46 to 2.59 t of DM ha-1 rotation-1 between the sampling years, for the sowings of 1995 and 1996. The plant height increased significantly; and, in all the cases, the tuft perimeter and the number of tillers plant-1 decreased (P < 0.001) between the sampling years. The percentage of dead material, the ratio leaf stem-1 and the index of specific foliar area showed a favourable performance in each productive time of the silvopastoral system. The percentages of DM plant-1 did not show differences between the treatments in the sowing years of the system and, in all the cases, they were influenced (P < 0.001) by the sampling years. The botanical composition of the agroecosystem showed favourable evolution (P < 0.01) in time, for the 6th year of exploitation, with decline of 88.67 to 79.75 in the Guinea grass percentage and increases of 8.41 to 10.55 % and 2.92 to 8.44 % in the depopulated area and other species, respectively. A favourable performance of the Guinea grass was evidenced in the three evolutionary times of the leucaena silvopastoral system. In respect to structural and morphological terms of the plant, there were changes as the system increased its exploitation time, with better ratio leaf/stalk and increase in the index of specific foliar area, which permitted the biomass production with deterioration in time. Se estudió el efecto de la sombra en el comportamiento productivo de la guinea en un sistema de silvopastoreo con leucaena durante diferentes momentos de su explotación (6, 5 y 4 años). En cada uno de ellos se identificaron tres tratamientos contrastantes: plantas a pleno sol, plantas a sombra parcial y plantas a sombra total. Para el análisis de la información se utilizó un modelo completamente aleatorizado en arreglo factorial (3 x 2), en el que se combinaron los tratamientos y los años de muestreo (1 y 2). En el estrato herbáceo se evaluaron los siguientes indicadores: disponibilidad, altura de la planta, perímetro de la macolla, número de hijos planta-1 , relación hoja tallo-1 , índice de área foliar específica (IAFEs), material muerto (MM) y porcentaje de MS planta-1 , así como composición botánica del área en el sistema. Los indicadores estudiados no mostraron interacción entre las distintas condiciones de sombra y los años de estudio para los diferentes momentos de explotación del sistema. En la mayoría de los indicadores, los efectos principales solamente indicaron diferencia entre los años de muestreo. La disponibilidad de la guinea no se afectó en ninguno de los momentos evolutivos del sistema, pero sí hubo aumento de 1.23 a 1.78 t de MS ha-1 rotación-1 y de 1.46 a 2.59 t de MS ha-1 rotación-1 entre los años de muestreo, para las siembras de 1995 y 1996. La altura de la planta aumentó de forma significativa y en todos los casos el perímetro de la macolla y el número de hijos planta-1 disminuyó (P < 0.001) entre los años de muestreo. El porcentaje de material muerto, la relación hoja tallo-1 y el índice de área foliar específica mostraron un comportamiento favorable en cada uno de los momentos productivos del sistema silvopastoril. Los porcentajes de MS planta-1 no mostraron diferencias entre los tratamientos en los distintos años de siembra del sistema y en todos los casos estuvieron influenciados (P<0.001) por los años de muestreo. La composición botánica del agroecosistema mostró una evolución desfavorable (P<0.01) en el tiempo, para el 6to año de explotación, con una disminución que fue de 88.67 a 79.75 en el porcentaje de guinea y aumentos de 8.41 a 10.55 % y de 2.92 a 8.44 % en el área despoblada y otras especies, respectivamente. Se evidenció un comportamiento favorable de la guinea en los tres momentos evolutivos del silvopastoreo con leucaena. Con respecto a términos estructurales y morfológicos de la planta, hubo cambios en la medida que el sistema aumentó su tiempo de explotación, con mejor relación hoja/tallo y aumento del índice de área foliar específica, lo que permitió la producción de biomasa sin deterioro en el tiempo. The article discusses a study to determine the nutritive quality and the phytochemical screening of Albizia lebbeck. The study was carried out in a typical dairy unit at the Institute of Animal Science in Cuba. The results suggest that it is possible to know the potential nutritive quality of the Albizia lebbeck foliage to be used in the feeding of ruminants.

The article discusses a study to determine the biomass evolution of silvopastoral system leucaena-guinea grass in different exploitation times. The capacity of the silvopastoral systems to increase the biomass in time and the necessity of carrying out differentiated managements between seasons as a way to potentiate the production of biomass in these systems are shown.

The article presents a study of the effect of the evolution of a leucaena-guinea grass system on the soil macrofauna. In the study, the number of individuals m&sup-2;, the macrofauna biomass (g m&sup-2), the species richness (S), the individual species, the soil humidity and the production of leaf litter were determined. The findings showed interaction between the sowing years and the different evolutionary times of the system for the number of individuals and the biomass of the soil macrofauna.

The article focuses on a study which examined the phytochemical screening of Erythrina mysorensis and its nutritive potential was determined by in vitro gas production. It has been found that gas production increased with the time of exposition of the samples to the attack of ruminal microbes. Forage fermentation was adjusted based on the Logistic and Monomolecular models which established non-linear relationship between the gas production and the time of exposition of the samples to the fermentative activity.

The article focuses on a study which examined the diversity of birds in silvopastoral systems of leucaena-guinea at different stages of the system development. The study revealed that there was no interaction between the different exploitation times of the system and the sampling hours for any ecological indices. It is denoted that the number of individuals and bird species richness can be increased with the evolution of the silvopasotral systems.

The article presents a study which compared the effect of pruning variants on the development of the biomass of a leucaena-guinea grass silvopastoral system in a randomized design. The materials and methods used are described. Results indicate that the diameter of the regrowth in the tree component and number of tillers/plant should be controlled for assessing the productive performance of the system.

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of the form and part of the stem to be planted on the establishment of Tithonia diversifolia. A random block design was used in factorial arrangement with four repetitions. The factors were: A) planting method, laying in the bottom of the furrow or buried in one of their points and B) section of the stem, mid or basal part. The studies were conducted on a red ferralic soil, in the rainy season. There was no interaction for the factors in study. There was greater development of the plants of Tithonia, when the stems were planted on the bottom of the furrow, for numbers of green leaves 19.35 vs. 16. 35 (P < 0.01), weight of green leaves 758 vs. 676 g (P < 0.01), g DM/plant 125 vs. 99 (P < 0.01), number of stems/m 45 vs. 37 (P < 0.01) and yield in kg of DM/m 6.81 vs. 3.37 (P < 0.001). there were no differences for the plant height. The worst performance was achieved when the stem was planted by burying it by one of its points. There no significant differences for the measures taken, compared with the part of the stem that should be used for the planting. It is concluded that Tithonia should be planted with the stem laying on the bottom of the furrow, using differently the basal or mid part. Se condujo un experimento para estudiar el efecto de la forma y la parte del tallo que se va a plantar en el establecimineto de Tithonia diversifolia. Se empleó un diseño de bloques al azar en arreglo factorial, con cuatro repeticiones. Los factores estudiados fueron: A) método de plantación: acostado en el fondo del surco o enterrado por una de sus puntas y B) sección del tallo: parte media o basal. Los trabajos se desarrollaron en un suelo ferrálico rojo, en la estación lluviosa. No hubo interacción para los factores en estudio. Hubo mayor desarrollo de las plantas de Tithonia, cuando los tallos se plantaron en el fondo del surco, para número de hojas verdes 19.35 vs 16. 35 (P < 0.01), peso de 100 hojas verdes 758 vs 676 g (P < 0. 01), g MS/planta 125 vs 99 (P < 0.01), número de tallos/m 45 vs 37 (P < 0. 01) y rendimiento en kg de MS/m 6.81 vs 3.37 (P < 0. 001). No hubo diferencias para la altura de la planta. El peor comportamiento se alcanzó cuando el tallo se plantó enterrándolo por una de sus puntas. No hubo diferencias significativas para las medidas tomadas, con respecto a la parte del tallo que debe utilizarse para la plantación. Se concluye que la plantación de Tithonia debe realizarse con el tallo acostado en el fondo del surco, utilizando indistintamente la parte basal o media.
