Despite its broad potential applications, substitution of carbon by transition metal atoms in graphene has so far been explored only to a limited extent. We report the realization of substitutional Mn doping of graphene to a record high atomic concentration of 0.5%, which was achieved using ultralow-energy ion implantation. By correlating the experimental data with the results of ab initio Born−Oppenheimer molecular dynamics calculations, we infer that direct substitution is the dominant mechanism of impurity incorporation. Thermal annealing in ultrahigh vacuum provides efficient removal of surface contaminants and additional implantation-induced disorder, resulting in Mn-doped graphene that, aside from the substitutional Mn impurities, is essentially as clean and defect-free as the as-grown layer. We further show that the Dirac character of graphene is preserved upon substitutional Mn doping, even in this high concentration regime, making this system ideal for studying the interaction between Dirac conduction electrons and localized magnetic moments. More generally, these results show that ultralow energy ion implantation can be used for controlled functionalization of graphene with substitutional transition-metal atoms, of relevance for a wide range of applications, from magnetism and spintronics to single-atom catalysis.

The coupling of excitons with atomic vibrations plays a pivotal role on the nonequilibrium optical properties of layered semiconductors. However, how exciton-phonon coupling manifests in the time and energy domains is still an open debate between experiment and theory. By means of time-resolved broadband optical reflectivity combined with ab initio calculations of a bismuth tri-iodide single crystal, we set the spectral fingerprints for the optical detection of exciton-phonon coupling in layered semiconductors. Our joint experimental and theoretical effort allows us to unravel the impact of exciton-phonon coupling by microscopically relating the photoinduced coherent energy modulation of the excitonic resonance to coherent optical phonons. This enables us to track the extent of the photoinduced atomic displacement in real space. Our findings represent a step forward on the road to coherent manipulation of the excitonic properties on ultrafast timescales.

The interpretation of the n = 1 image potential state data on graphene on SiC is far from being clarified. In contrast with graphene grown on metallic substrates, graphene on SiC shows a very broad n=1 image state which is sometimes resolved in two different peaks. In literature the double feature has been ascribed to the presence of a second image state, due to the buffer layer when an incomplete graphene layer occurs, or, alternatively, has been identified as the double series of image states predicted for the free-standing graphene. Here, by varying the pump laser photon energy, in the non-linear photoemission experiment, we are able to reveal the presence of a resonance intensity of the image potential state that in principle could help to shed light on the origin of n=1 image state on graphene on SiC.

Metal-tetraphenyl-porphyrin (M-TPP) molecules typically self-assemble forming square-like superlattices, as dictated by their shape. The dependence of the adsorption properties on the central atom is systematically studied for Co-, Ni-, and Zn-TPP adsorbed on oxygen passivated Fe(001), namely the Fe(001)-p(1×1)O surface. It is found by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) that despite the weak molecule–substrate interaction, preserving many features of quasi-free molecules, the self-assembled structure switches from the (5×5)R37° superlattice of Co-TPP and Ni-TPP to the plain (5×5) of Zn-TPP. Ab initio calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) are used to investigate the adsorption properties of the different molecules and the possible overlayers formed. Adsorption energies, structures, and electronic properties are reported, discussing the bonding mechanisms and the magnetic character. Only moderate energy differences are found, suggesting that subtle effects may steer the selection of the structure among overlayers with similar properties although differing substantially as for the LEED and STM experimental results.

The self-assembly of leucoquinizarin molecules on Au(111) surfaces is shown to be characterized by the molecules mostly being in their keto–enolic tautomeric form, with evidence of their temporary switching to other tautomeric forms. This reveals a metastable chemistry of the assembled molecules, to be considered for their possible employment in the formation of more complex hetero-organic interfaces.

We observed a 73% enhancement of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of a photovoltaic cell based on a single wall carbon nanotube/Si hybrid junction after exposing the device to a limited amount (10 ppm) of NO2 diluted in dry air. On the basis of a computational modeling of the junction, this enhancement is discussed in terms of both carbon nanotube (CNT) p-doping, induced by the interaction with the oxidizing molecules, and work function changes across the junction. Unlike studies so far reported, where the PCE enhancement was correlated only qualitatively to CNT doping, our study (i) provides a novel and reversible path to tune and considerably enhance the cell efficiency by a few ppm gas exposure, and (ii) shows computational results that quantitatively relate the observed effects to the electrostatics of the cell through a systematic calculation of the work function. These effects have been cross-checked by exposing the cell to reducing molecules (i.e·NH3) that resulted to be detrimental to the cell efficiency, consistently with the theoretical ab-initio calculations.

Carbon structures comprising sp1 chains (e.g., polyynes or cumulenes) can be synthesized by exploiting on-surface chemistry and molecular self-assembly of organic precursors, opening to the use of the full experimental and theoretical surface-science toolbox for their characterization. In particular, polarized near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) can be used to determine molecular adsorption angles and is here also suggested as a probe to discriminate sp1/sp2 character in the structures. We present an ab initio study of the polarized NEXAFS spectrum of model and real sp1/sp2 materials. Calculations are performed within density functional theory with plane waves and pseudopotentials, and spectra are computed by core-excited C potentials. We evaluate the dichroism in the spectrum for ideal carbynes and highlight the main differences relative to typical sp2 systems. We then consider a mixed polymer alternating sp1 C4 units with sp2 biphenyl groups, recently synthesized on Au(111), as well as other linear structures and two-dimensional networks, pointing out a spectral line shape specifically due to the the presence of linear C chains. Our study suggests that the measurements of polarized NEXAFS spectra could be used to distinctly fingerprint the presence of sp1 hybridization in surface-grown C structures.

Graphene and h-BN are grown by chemical vapor deposition in ultra high vacuum conditions on the Pt(110) surface. Scanning tunneling microscopy measurements and low-energy electron diffraction data indicate that graphene forms a variety of differently oriented incommensurate domains although with a strong preference to align its [1120] direction with the [001] direction of Pt. Meanwhile, h-BN exhibits a c(8 × 10) commensurate superstructure, which presents a high level of defectivity that implies local variation of the periodicity (i.e. mixed c(8 × 10) and c(8 × 12) patches) and the introduction of local defects. The combination of advanced photoemission spectroscopy data (angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy from the valence band) and ab initio calculations indicates that both 2D materials interact weakly with the substrate: graphene exhibits neutral doping and is morphologically flat, even if it nucleates on the relatively highly corrugated rectangular (110) surface. In the case of h-BN, the interaction is slightly stronger and is characterized by a small electron transfer from surface Pt atoms to nitrogen atoms. The (110) termination of Pt is therefore a quite interesting surface for the growth of 2D materials because given its low symmetry, it may favor the growth of selectively oriented domains but does not affect their pristine electronic properties.

Despite the astonishing values of the power conversion efficiency reached, in just less than a decade, by the carbon nanotube/silicon (CNT/Si) solar cells, many doubts remain on the underlying transport mechanisms across the CNT/Si heterojunction. Here, by combining transient optical spectroscopy in the femtosecond timescale, X-ray photoemission, and a systematic tracking of I-V curves across all phases of the interlayer SiOx growth at the interface, we grasp the mechanism that adequately preserves charge separation at the junction, hindering the photoexcited carrier recombination. Moreover, supported by ab initio calculations aimed to model the complex CNT-Si heterointerface, we show that oxygen-related states at the interface act as entrapping centers for the photoexcited electrons, thus preventing recombination with holes that can flow from Si to CNT across the SiOx layer.

The interaction of alkali atoms with metal surfaces is reviewed. The peculiar electronic configuration of such atoms, with only one valence electron participating in the bond formation, suggested simple pictures to describe their interaction with a metal surface. But it was early evident that the adsorption properties depend on many aspects, related to the electronic structure of constituents, leading, for example, to different degrees of ionicity/covalency of the alkali atom-metal bond. Sophisticated theoretical modeling tried to shed light on this aspect. The spectral properties are the ultimate features in determining how the systems interact with each other. In this review the electronic and spectral properties are discussed focusing on different theoretical representations of the physical system and on their consequences. Surface projected energy gaps of the substrate as well as the substrate continuous spectrum are key aspects in determining the nature of the interaction and bonding with alkali adsorbates. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Spin polarized de-excitation of a metastable helium atom interacting with metal surfaces is treated within density functional theory. The method is based on a self-consistent calculation of the spin dependent electronic properties of the system, such as the surface density of states and the localized surface states, to compute the transition rate. On the high work function Ag(100) and Ag(111) surfaces, the helium 2s electron is delocalized in the metal and hence the transition rate is weakly spin dependent. The existence of a Shockley surface state in Ag(111) determines a neutralization rate that is about 59% larger than that from Ag(100). On a low work function metal, namely Na(100), the rate is of smaller magnitude than those on silver because the 2s triplet resonance is found to be more occupied. Consequently, emitted electrons can display a strong spin dependence also for a paramagnetic surface

Adsorbates on metal surfaces have attracted recently the scientific interest both from a fundamental point of view (quantum confinement) and in perspective of application in technology. In particular the electronic properties of such reduced symmetry systems are strictly related to their low dimensionality. An accurate theoretical description of their spectral properties has necessarily to deal with the absence of periodicity that characterizes these systems in one (thin films) or more (adatoms) directions. The embedding method allows to overcome this drawback considering a really infinite system both on vacuum and bulk side. In this thesis the ab initio spectral properties of single adatoms (alkali-metal atom and Ba) on Cu(111) and thin overlayers (K/Cu(111), Bi/Cu(100), O/Fe(100)) are analyzed, also in comparison with experimental results. The capabilities of the theoretical method adopted allow to evidence the role of the substrate band structure on the adsorbates induced electronic states. In particular the aspects related to the resonant charge transfer from the adsorbate's states to the bulk continuum are analyzed. This process represents an elastic decay channel for the surface electronic states and contributes to the elastic lifetime, that we can estimate according to the description of a continuous substrate band structure. The results presented for single adatoms evidence the blockade effect that a surface projected energy gap of the substrate produces on the resonant charge transfer. On the other hand the results relative to the overlayer allows to analyze the complex hybridization mechanism between surface features and substrate states in different points of the surface Brillouin zone. In addition the theoretical description of the electronic properties of overlayers on metal surfaces is devoted in this thesis also to the simulation of experimental findings, namely STM and STS images and photoemission spectra, showing the predictive character of the theo

We have investigated the formation of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) atomically resolved images of the Fe(001)-p1x1-O surface. The latter is characterized by a high in-plane symmetry for both oxygen and iron atoms, thus representing a very appealing template for understanding how to distinguish between oxygen and metal atoms in STM images of an oxidized metal surface. We report on the occurrence of a corrugation reversal as a function of the tip-sample distance, and we use the conclusions of such an investigation for interpreting the experimental images of an oxygen vacancy created on the surface. Our experimental work, supported by ab initio density-functional theory calculations, allows us to assess the fundamental role of the local potential barrier in determining the STM image formation

A single layer of bismuth deposited on the Cu(100) surface forms long range ordered structural phases at various Bi density. A highly ordered c (2×2) reconstruction is accomplished at 0.5 ML, further Bi deposition induces a c (92×2) R45° structure and a subsequent p (10×10) phase related to the formation of regular dislocations arrays. The transition from a c (2×2) superstructure to the c (92×2) R45° phase is accompanied by a sudden decrease in the work function. Photoemission measurements reveal that the Bi induced states close to the Fermi level, associated to the c (2×2) phase, are strongly quenched when the arrays of dislocations are formed, while at higher binding energies, they undergo an energy shift probably due to a confinement effect. The low-energy single particle excitations and the electron dispersion of the Bi induced states of the c (2×2) phase are compared to the electronic states deduced by theoretical band structure obtained by ab initio calculation performed within the embedding method applied to a realistic semi-infinite system. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

The surface states generated by the adsorption of a full monolayer of K on Cu(111) are obtained by the embedding method within density functional theory. Their energy dependence is accounted for as function of the surface parallel wave vector and is connected to the spatial distribution of the electronic charge computed at special points in the two-dimensional Brillouin zone. Thanks to the description of a truly semi-infinite substrate within the adopted framework, the elastic linewidth of the surface states is determined with great accuracy and is shown to reflect the different degrees of hybridization of such states with the surface projected bulk bands. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

The adsorption of Cs and Ba on Cu(111) is investigated by means of one- and two-photon photoemission experiments and theoretically by first-principles calculations. The spectral properties of these systems, induced by both surface and adatom states, are studied at submonolayer coverage through angle-resolved measurements. A coverage-dependent analysis is also exploited in the assignment of the observed electronic states. The comparison with ab initio calculations allows identification of all the spectral features induced by Cs and Ba chemisorption. The theoretical analysis concerns the limiting single adatom case, treated in an embedding approach with a one-dimensional potential for the surface. The agreement between the calculated density of states and the experimental spectra confirms that the model substrate retains all the relevant physics entering in the adsorption process. The differences between the electronic structures of Cs and Ba on the Cu(111) surface can be attributed to the group-dependent screening of the core potentials as manifested by the ionic radii and ionization potentials (alkali vs alkaline earth).

Helium atom scattering (HAS) is the most important tool for surface science investigations. The analysis of helium scattering off a solid surface allows for a detailed analysis of its structural and dynamical properties. In this work we show how the dynamics of electron distributions at a metal surface can be investigated by HAS in the adiabatic approximation. First we examine the anticorrugating effect, namely the property of the He–surface potential of those metal systems in which the classical turning points of He beams are farther away from the surface layer at the bridge than at top sites. Anticorrugation for the system He/Cu(111) is examined in detail by a density functional theory (DFT) calculation and compared with the corrugating behaviour of He/Al(111). To explain such an effect the charge polarization of the system is crucial. Second we consider theoretically a surprising restricted diffusion result in the normal direction for Na adatoms on Cu(001) at coverages larger than 0.04 ML, obtained by measurements with spin polarized 3He beams. From DFT calculations for this system a model for the description of the He–surface interaction based on the effective medium theory, which accounts for the observed phenomenon, is discussed. We show that the surface charge distribution probed by HAS is altered by the local concentration of the diffusing adatoms which is fluctuating with time and producing variations in the apparent height of the adatom measured by HAS. Our calculations demonstrate that such electronic dynamical rearrangements can be probed by the 3He spin echo technique, which could be extended to other studies of surface electronic properties

Recent joint theoretical and experimental investigations of Auger core–core–valence spectra of alkali adatoms on simple metals have revealed that such technique is capable to ascertain contributions from different adsorption environments in the signal [M.I. Trioni, S. Caravati, G.P. Brivio, L. Floreano, F. Bruno, A. Morgante, Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 (2004) 206802]. Consequently, to verify if such an effect is present also for other chemical species, we study theoretically the KLV transition of oxygen either as a bulk impurity or as an adsorbate in/on Al and Ag (jellium-like). We make use of the Fermi golden rule in which the matrix elements of the interaction are calculated within DFT. We verify that the relevant physical quantity of this phenomenon is the excited local density of states (LDOS), calculated within a region centered on the core ionized atom. The Auger rate for oxygen in Ag bulk displays a single asymmetric peak, while for adsorbed oxygen a second smaller feature at lower energies, and very close to the first one, appears. This unexpected result follows from the removal of the degeneracy of the m quantum number of the 2p states of oxygen at the surface. It is only displayed on the electronically less dense metal (Ag), but not on Al.
