Abstract: Multiphase oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) is an important source of sulfate in the atmosphere. There are, however, concerns that protons produced during SO2 oxidation may cause rapid acidification of aerosol water and thereby quickly shut down the fast reactions favored at high pH. Here, we show that the sustainability of sulfate production is controlled by the competing effects of multiphase buffering and acidification, which can be well described by a characteristic buffering time, τbuff. Both GEOS‐Chem simulations and observations show that globally, τbuff is long enough (days) to sustain sulfate production over most populated regions, where the acidification of aerosol water is counteracted by the strong buffering effect of NH4+/NH3. Our results highlight the importance of anthropogenic ammonia emissions and pervasive human influences in shaping the chemical environment of the atmosphere.

The addition of Ca and Sb in Cr‐bearing steel presents improved corrosion resistance during the field exposure test in a marine atmosphere environment. Through local hydrolysis reactions, Ca and Sb can form CaO, Sb2O3, and Sb2O5 to prevent the intrusion Cl− into the corrosion product film, which improves the protectiveness of the corrosion product film and reduces the corrosion rate. The formation of CaCl2 decreases the relative content of β‐FeOOH and makes the corrosion product film more stable. Due to the inhibition of Sb on the local acidification of corrosion product film, Ca and Cr are able to bond with more hydroxide for generating the corresponding oxides and improving the corrosion resistance of Cr‐bearing steel. A key control on the magnitude of coastal eutrophication is the degree to which currents quickly transport nitrogen derived from human sources away from the coast to the open ocean before eutrophication develops. In the Southern California Bight (SCB), an upwelling-dominated eastern boundary current ecosystem, anthropogenic nitrogen inputs increase algal productivity and cause subsurface acidification and oxygen (O 2 ) loss along the coast. However, the extent of anthropogenic influence on eutrophication beyond the coastal band, and the physical transport mechanisms and biogeochemical processes responsible for these effects are still poorly understood. Here, we use a submesoscale-resolving numerical model to document the detailed biogeochemical mass balance of nitrogen, carbon and oxygen, their physical transport, and effects on offshore habitats. Despite management of terrestrial nutrients that has occurred in the region over the last 20 years, coastal eutrophication continues to persist. The input of anthropogenic nutrients promote an increase in productivity, remineralization and respiration offshore, with recurrent O 2 loss and pH decline in a region located 30–90 km from the mainland. During 2013 to 2017, the spatially averaged 5-year loss rate across the Bight was 1.3 mmol m - 3 O 2 , with some locations losing on average up to 14.2 mmol m - 3 O 2 . The magnitude of loss is greater than model uncertainty assessed from data-model comparisons and from quantification of intrinsic variability. This phenomenon persists for 4 to 6 months of the year over an area of 27,840 km 2 (∼ 30% of SCB area). These recurrent features of acidification and oxygen loss are associated with cross-shore transport of nutrients by eddies and plankton biomass and their accumulation and retention within persistent eddies offshore within the SCB. The local acidity at the anode surface during electrolysis is apparently stronger than that in bulk electrolyte due to the deprotonation from the reactant, which leads to the deteriorated electrocatalytic performances and product distributions. Here, an anode‐electrolyte interfacial acidity regulation strategy has been proposed to inhibit local acidification at the surface of anode and enhance the electrocatalytic activity and selectivity of anodic reactions. As a proof of the concept, CeO2‐x Lewis acid component has been employed as a supporter to load Au nanoparticles to accelerate the diffusion and enrichment of OH− toward the anode surface, so as to accelerate the electrocatalytic alcohol oxidation reaction. As the result, Au/CeO2‐x exhibits much enhanced lactic acid selectivity of 81 % and electrochemical activity of 693 mA⋅cm−2 current density in glycerol oxidation reaction compared to pure Au. Mechanism investigation reveals that the introduced Lewis acid promotes the mass transport and concentration of OH− on the anode surface, thus promoting the generation of lactic acid through the simultaneous enhancements of Faradaic and non‐Faradaic processes. Attractively, the proposed strategy can be used for the electro‐oxidation performance enhancements of a variety of alcohols, which thereby provides a new perspective for efficient alcohol electro‐oxidations and the corresponding electrocatalyst design. Background: The integration of anaerobic digestion into bio-based industries can create synergies that help render anaerobic digestion self-sustaining. Two-stage digesters with separate acidification stages allow for the production of green hydrogen and short-chain fatty acids, which are promising industrial products. Heat shocks can be used to foster the production of these products, the practical applicability of this treatment is often not addressed sufficiently, and the presented work therefore aims to close this gap. Methods: Batch experiments were conducted in 5 L double-walled tank reactors incubated at 37 °C. Short microwave heat shocks of 25 min duration and exposure times of 5–10 min at 80 °C were performed and compared to oven heat shocks. Pairwise experimental group differences for gas production and chemical parameters were determined using ANOVA and post–hoc tests. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was performed to analyse taxonomic profiles. Results: After heat–shocking the entire seed sludge, the highest hydrogen productivity was observed at a substrate load of 50 g/l with 1.09 mol H2/mol hexose. With 1.01 mol H2/mol hexose, microwave-assisted treatment was not significantly different from oven-based treatments. This study emphasised the better repeatability of heat shocks with microwave-assisted experiments, revealing low variation coefficients averaging 29%. The pre-treatment with microwaves results in a high predictability and a stronger microbial community shift to Clostridia compared to the treatment with the oven. The pre-treatment of heat shocks supported the formation of butyric acid up to 10.8 g/l on average, with a peak of 24.01 g/l at a butyric/acetic acid ratio of 2.0. Conclusion: The results support the suitability of using heat shock for the entire seed sludge rather than just a small inoculum, making the process more relevant for industrial applications. The performed microwave-based treatment has proven to be a promising alternative to oven-based treatments, which ultimately may facilitate their implementation into industrial systems. Dry anaerobic digestion (dry-AD) is an attractive process for solid wastes such as agri-food waste. However, some limitations mainly associated to lack of effective mixing, can hinder the methane production capacity of the systems. Bulking agent (BA) has been proposed as a solution to the compaction issues in systems without mechanical agitation, such as leaching bed reactors. However, effects of BA are still not clear, and, thus, the factors to consider for its dose has not been optimized yet. This work studies the effect of BA in dry-AD. Two substrates with different characteristics were proposed as models, bean peel as a lignocellulosic substrate and a mixture of food waste as a readily biodegradable substrate. Inert plastic rings were used as BA at different BA:S ratios. Assessed BA:S ratio did not affect the performance of methane production for the lignocellulosic waste, but it did significantly affect to the easily biodegradable substrate, showing up to a 28% of methane production increase. This result could be due to the presence of lignocellulosic compounds in the bean peel, behaving like a natural BA. In assays with an increased bed height, the compaction of the system was more severe, resulting in the rapid acidification of the processes. At these conditions, the positive effect of BA addition was more marked, allowing methane production and no acidification of the system. Impaired tumor cell antigen presentation contributes significantly to immune evasion. This study identifies Berbamine hydrochloride (Ber), a compound derived from traditional Chinese medicine, as an effective inhibitor of autophagy that enhances antigen presentation in tumor cells. Ber increases MHC-I-mediated antigen presentation in melanoma cells, improving recognition and elimination by CD8+ T cells. Mutation of Atg4b, which blocks autophagy, also raises MHC-I levels on the cell surface, and further treatment with Ber under these conditions does not increase MHC-I, indicating Ber's role in blocking autophagy to enhance MHC-I expression. Additionally, Ber treatment leads to the accumulation of autophagosomes, with elevated levels of LC3-II and p62, suggesting a disrupted autophagic flux. Fluorescence staining and co-localization analyses reveal that Ber likely inhibits lysosomal acidification without hindering autophagosome–lysosome fusion. Importantly, Ber treatment suppresses melanoma growth in mice and enhances CD8+ T cell infiltration, supporting its therapeutic potential. Our findings demonstrate that Ber disturbs late-stage autophagic flux through abnormal lysosomal acidification, enhancing MHC-I-mediated antigen presentation and curtailing tumor immune escape. For the anodic H2O2 generation, it has been shown that the electrolyte composition can steer the reaction pathway toward increased H2O2 generation. Previous efforts made on composition optimization found that the impact of the molar fraction of carbonate species varies for different anodes, and therefore, controversies remain concerning the reaction pathways as well as the species involved in H2O2 formation. Considering that water oxidation results in the liberation of protons within the anode microenvironment, the corresponding acidification would cause an equilibrium shift between carbonate species, which in turn may modulate the reaction pathway. We determined the changes in the fraction of carbonate species in the vicinity of an anode by performing local pH measurements using a Au nanoelectrode positioned in close proximity to an operating anode by shear‐force scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). It could be confirmed that the main anionic species at the interface is HCO3−, at potentials where H2O2 is preferentially formed, regardless of the pH value in the bulk. The simultaneous use of a Au−Pt double barrel microelectrode in generator‐collector SECM measurements demonstrates that the local HCO3− concentration is collectively determined by the oxidation current, buffer capacity, and bulk pH of the electrolyte. • Acidification and fermentation preserved a high BSFL-rearing performance. • Acidification and fermentation contribute to the all-year provision of feedstock. • Acidification led to a higher bioconversion rate compared to fermentation. • The nutrient-rich feedstock did not benefit from inoculating lactic acid bacteria. Maintaining a consistent supply of feedstock for efficient bioconversion of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) presents challenges due to the fluctuating availability of biowastes and agri-food products. To address the challenge of consistent feedstock supply for BSFL, this study investigated the influence of three preservation methods: wild fermentation, inoculated fermentation, and acidification on agri-food by-products applied over three storage durations (1, 7, and 14 days), evaluating their impact on BSFL bioconversion, and feedstock nutrient and microbiota composition. The preserved feedstocks were characterized for gross nutrient, sugar, fermentation metabolite, and bacterial community analyses. All feedstock preservation methods and storage durations had a high bioconversion rate (21–25 % dry mass) and wet larval mass (170–196 mg). Notably, 7-and-14-day acidified feedstock had a significantly higher bioconversion rate compared to fermented feedstock. Acidification preserved feedstock nutrients best with only a 10 % difference compared to initial nutrient values. Fermentation produced typical lactic acid fermentation metabolites with reducing sugar contents; however, adding a lactic acid bacterial inoculum (7 log 10 CFU kg feedstock−1) had no benefit, presumably due to the high nutrient content and existing richness in lactic acid bacteria. Preservations had little influence on Enterobacteriaceae (6.2–7.5 log 10 CFU g−1) in freshly harvested larvae. Future research should assess the acidification and fermentation of different BSFL feedstocks and investigate the roles of feedstock pH, organic acids, and fermentation metabolites in more detail. Paper‐based cultural relics are of great value and have been facing irreversible damage caused by multiple factors, among which acid hydrolysis and ultraviolet photodegradation are the main processes leading to paper deterioration. Paper protection highly relies on a limited range of materials with single functions, and the design of new materials that ensure long‐term safety and efficiency by simultaneously addressing the issues of acidification and UV degradation in paper is highly desired. In this study, the introduction of carbon dots (CDs)‐enhanced layered double hydroxides (LDH) 0D/2D nanohybrids (CDs/Mg‐Al LDH) is proposed as novel dual‐functional materials for paper protection against UV degradation and acidification. Through a CDs‐assisted in situ growth strategy, CDs/Mg‐Al LDH with ultrathin thickness (≈9.1 nm) and CDs‐intercalated structure are achieved. The CDs/Mg‐Al LDH nanohybrids demonstrate high dispersibility, strong UV absorption, and remarkable photostability, resulting in protected‐paper with decelerated acidification, oxidation, and yellowing degradation processes under both accelerated UV‐aging and dry‐heat conditions. Additionally, the protected‐paper can emit uniform blue light under 365 nm UV excitation allows for easy identification of the distributed CDs/Mg‐Al LDH within the paper, marking a unique and practical feature. Otoliths are frequently used as proxies to examine the impacts of climate change on fish growth in marine and freshwater ecosystems worldwide. However, the large sensitivity differences in otolith growth responses to typical changing environmental factors (i.e., temperature and CO2 concentration), coupled with unclear drivers and potential inconsistencies with fish body growth, fundamentally challenge the reliability of such otolith applications. Here, we performed a global meta‐analysis of experiments investigating the direct effects of warming (297 cases) and CO2 acidification (293 cases) on fish otolith growth and compared them with fish body growth responses. Hierarchical models were used to assess the overall effect and quantify the influence of nine explanatory factors (e.g., fish feeding habit, life history stage, habitat type, and experimental amplitude and duration). The overall effects of warming and acidification on otolith growth were positive and significant, and the effect size of warming (effect size = 0.4003, otolith size of the treatment group increased by 49.23% compared to that of the control group) was larger than that of acidification (0.0724, 7.51%). All factors examined contributed to the heterogeneity of effect sizes, with larger responses commonly observed in carnivorous fish, marine species, and young individuals. Warming amplitudes and durations and acidification amplitudes increased the effect sizes, while acidification durations decreased the effect sizes. Otolith growth responses were consistent with, but greater than, fish body growth responses under warming. In contrast, fish body growth responses were not significant under acidification (effect size = −0.0051, p =.6185) and thus cannot be estimated using otoliths. Therefore, our study highlights that the reliability of applying otoliths to examine climate change impacts is likely varied, as the sensitivity of otolith growth responses and the consistency between the growth responses of otoliths and fish bodies are context‐dependent. Laboratory fluid flow experiments through hydraulically transmissive fractures in carbonate rocks subjected to mechanical loading and acidizing illuminate how dissolution processes enhance fracture transmissivity. Fracture plane roughness and the size of unmated (i.e., non-contact) regions are critically important. In particular, rough surfaces promote transmissivity enhancement. By contrast, smoother surfaces with higher levels of matedness and contact areas between the opposing fracture planes remain unaffected by chemical degradation. Such surfaces do not illuminate relevant mechanical variations. Grain-supported rocks with high calcium contents and rough surfaces show the most significant increase in fracture transmissivity after acidizing. Contrastingly, fracture transmissivity after acid treatment in matrix-supported rocks with high calcium contents is low, even in samples with rough fractures and unmated surfaces. These results inform geochemical models in the presence of acid injection and make hydrocarbon reservoir simulations more robust. Moreover, these results provide valuable insights and trends for understanding the interaction of rocks with other types of reactive fluids, such as carbon dioxide. Gallic acid (GA) has a good therapeutic effect in bacteriological inhibition and plays a variety of functions in maintaining the stability of the immune system. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of GA on the bactericidal activity of macrophages against Vibrio vulnificus (Vv). A cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay was carried out to test the cytotoxicity of GA on J774A.1 cells. Concentration of proinflammatory cytokines in J774A.1 cells were evaluated by ELISA. The internalization and degradation of Vv in the phagosomes were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The phagosome acidification and phagolysosome formation were detected to evaluate the bacteria-clearing function of J774A.1 cells. The bactericidal activity of GA in vivo was also investigated by collecting the survival time of Vv infected mice and observing the inflammatory infiltration of organs. Our results demonstrated that GA at 50 μM significantly inhibited the proinflammatory cytokines levels, promoted phagosome acidification and phagolysosome formation in J774A.1 cells with Vv infection. This may be related to the activation of NLRP3/mTOR signaling pathway. Additionally, GA treatment improves the survival and bactericidal activity of mice infected with Vv. Plasma membrane H+-ATPases (PMAs) provide an H+ electrochemical gradient to establish a proton motive force and membrane potential for the transport of various nutrients across the plasma membrane. PMAs are regulated at multiple levels, and genetic modulation of PMA expression could enhance nutrient acquisition and use efficiency in plants. PMAs are involved in the coordination of the uptake and assimilation of both nitrate and ammonium. PMAs are involved in nutrient utilization by regulating root growth, facilitating organic anion exudation, and promoting the acquisition of nutrients through H+ extrusion-mediated apoplast and rhizosphere acidification. PMAs play essential roles in mycorrhizal symbioses in plant roots for nutrient acquisition. Plasma membrane H+-ATPases (PMAs) pump H+ out of the cytoplasm by consuming ATP to generate a membrane potential and proton motive force for the transmembrane transport of nutrients into and out of plant cells. PMAs are involved in nutrient acquisition by regulating root growth, nutrient uptake, and translocation, as well as the establishment of symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizas. Under nutrient stresses, PMAs are activated to pump more H+ and promote organic anion excretion, thus improving nutrient availability in the rhizosphere. Herein we review recent progress in the physiological functions and the underlying molecular mechanisms of PMAs in the efficient acquisition and utilization of various nutrients in plants. Pyrazinamide (PZA) is a key drug in the treatment of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Although not completely understood yet, the bactericidal mechanism of PZA starts with its diffusion into the cell and subsequent conversion into pyrazinoic acid (POA) after the hydrolysis of ammonia group. This leads to the acidification cycle, which involves: (1) POA extrusion into the extracellular environment, (2) reentry of protonated POA, and (3) release of a proton into the cytoplasm, resulting in acidification of the cytoplasm and accumulation of intracellular POA. To better understand this process, we developed a system of coupled non-linear differential equations, which successfully recapitulates the kinetics of PZA/POA observed in M. tuberculosis. The parametric space was explored, assessing the impact of different PZA and pH concentrations and variations in the kinetic parameters, finding scenarios of PZA susceptibility and resistance. Furthermore, our predictions show that the acidification cycle alone is not enough to result in significant intracellular accumulation of POA in experimental time scales when compared to other neutral pH scenarios. Thus, revealing the need of novel hypotheses and experimental evidence to determine the missing mechanisms that may explain the pH-dependent intracellular accumulation of POA and their subsequent effects. Excessive anthropogenic nitrogen fixation alters the nitrogen cycle and increases nitrogen deposition, leading to nitrogen saturation, which in turns leads to forest decline and nitrate leaching into stream waters. Kureha Hill in Toyama Prefecture, Japan, is considered to be in nitrogen saturation, since many streams have contained high concentrations of nitrate for more than 20 years. In this study, the latest status of nitrogen saturation was verified by comparing most recent data with 20 years observational data, focusing on various indicators of nitrogen saturation, such as stream water quality, nitrogen budget of the watershed, and soil nitrification and mineralization potential. Both the nitrogen deposition on the Hyakumakidani watershed on Kureha Hill and the amount of nitrate leaching to the stream tended to decrease. The reduction in nitrate leaching could be attributed to the reduction in nitrogen deposition and other factors, such as nitrogen pools in the soil. Despite the recent decline in nitrate concentration of the Hyakumakidani stream, the pH level has remained unchanged. This may be due to decreased concentrations of sulfate and acid neutralizing capacity (ANC). The C/N ratio of the soil ranged from 12 to 18 from 2000 to 2023, which was lower than the nitrogen saturation threshold of 25. The net nitrification rate and net mineralization rate showed no significant changes between 2002 and 2023, indicating that the potential to produce nitrate has been unchanged. Similar values in net nitrification and net nitrogen mineralization rates reflected that the Hyakumakidani watershed remained in Stage‐3 nitrogen saturation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lysosomal acidity relies on H+ inflow, which requires counter-ion flows (Cl− and K+) to balance charge. A lysosome targeting ternary recognition fluorescent probe for Cl−, K+, and pH was developed for lysosome acidification counter-ion research. Over a period of 30 years (1993–2022), headwater catchments in the Slavkov Forest (Czech Republic) exhibited a robust increase in stream water DOC (dissolved organic carbon) concentrations following a significant reduction in acidic atmospheric deposition. Sulfur deposition decreased from 34 kg ha−1 yr−1 in 1993 to 2.6 kg ha−1 yr−1 in 2022. Three Norway-spruce-dominated research sites—Černý Potok (CEP), a 15.2 ha peatbog catchment, Lysina (LYS), a 27.3 ha granitic catchment, and Pluhův Bor (PLB), a 21.6 ha serpentinite catchment, were investigated. The three–year average DOC concentration increased from 48.2 mg L−1 (1993–1995) to 68.3 mg L−1 (2020–2022) at CEP (0.69 mg L−1 yr−1). LYS showed an increase from 16.9 mg L−1 to 25.4 mg L−1 (0.30 mg L−1 yr−1 annually). The largest increase was recorded at PLB, with an increase from 15.7 mg L−1 to 36.7 mg L−1 (0.89 mg L−1 yr−1). A decline in ionic strength was identified as the main driver of the DOC increase. The annual runoff declined significantly at CEP and LYS from 465 mm to 331 mm as a result of rising air temperatures and reduced precipitation between 2014 and 2022. PLB (average of 266 mm) did not show a statistically significant decline. Recently, PLB experienced significant deforestation that likely lowered transpiration and thus increased catchment runoff. As a result, DOC fluxes did not change significantly at CEP (average 210 kg ha−1 yr−1) and LYS (90 kg ha −1 yr−1). However, PLB's DOC flux more than doubled, increasing from 44 to 106 kg ha−1 yr−1. Drivers connected with global change, such as increasing temperatures, or potential chemical drivers, such as reductions in Al concentrations and pH changes, were not able to explain the observed changes in DOC concentra tions and fluxes. Amelogenin (AMELX), the predominant matrix protein in enamel formation, contains a singular phosphorylation site at Serine 16 (S16) that greatly enhances AMELX's capacity to stabilize amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) and inhibit its transformation to apatitic enamel crystals. To explore the potential role of AMELX phosphorylation in vivo, we developed a knock-in (KI) mouse model in which AMELX phosphorylation is prevented by substituting S16 with Ala (A). As anticipated, AMELXS16A KI mice displayed a severe phenotype characterized by weak hypoplastic enamel, absence of enamel rods, extensive ectopic calcifications, a greater rate of ACP transformation to apatitic crystals, and progressive cell pathology in enamel-forming cells (ameloblasts). In the present investigation, our focus was on understanding the mechanisms of action of phosphorylated AMELX in amelogenesis. We have hypothesized that the absence of AMELX phosphorylation would result in a loss of controlled mineralization during the secretory stage of amelogenesis, leading to an enhanced rate of enamel mineralization that causes enamel acidification due to excessive proton release. To test these hypotheses, we employed microcomputed tomography (µCT), colorimetric pH assessment, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) microspectroscopy of apical portions of mandibular incisors from 8-week old wildtype (WT) and KI mice. As hypothesized, µCT analyses demonstrated significantly higher rates of enamel mineral densification in KI mice during the secretory stage compared to the WT. Despite a greater rate of enamel densification, maximal KI enamel thickness increased at a significantly lower rate than that of the WT during the secretory stage of amelogenesis, reaching a thickness in mid-maturation that is approximately half that of the WT. pH assessments revealed a lower pH in secretory enamel in KI compared to WT mice, as hypothesized. FTIR findings further demonstrated that KI enamel is comprised of significantly greater amounts of acid phosphate compared to the WT, consistent with our pH assessments. Furthermore, FTIR microspectroscopy indicated a significantly higher mineral-to-organic ratio in KI enamel, as supported by µCT findings. Collectively, our current findings demonstrate that phosphorylated AMELX plays crucial mechanistic roles in regulating the rate of enamel mineral formation, and in maintaining physico-chemical homeostasis and the enamel growth pattern during early stages of amelogenesis. BACKGROUND: Whole wheat steamed bread has been recommended for its potential nutritional benefits to human health. Given the positive role of both organic acid and alkali in improving dough development and product quality, the present study investigated the effects of neutralization by addition of alkali (Na2CO3) after dough acidification with traditional Jiaozi starter on the properties of whole wheat dough. RESULTS: The population of yeast and lactic acid bacteria and the acidification level of the dough increased significantly after fermentation with Jiaozi. Incorporation of alkali greatly improved the leavening capacity of the remixed dough and the quality of steamed bread. Jiaozi fermentation and alkali addition changed the water distribution patterns (T2) and affected the secondary structures of gluten protein, starch crystallinity and pasting properties. The storage modulus (G') of the dough increased significantly with the alkali addition, which could be attributed to the promoted cross‐linking of the gluten structure and the altered hydration state of the macromolecules. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study indicate that a combination of Jiaozi fermentation and alkali addition could improve the technological properties of whole wheat dough and the quality of steamed bread. Senescent cells accumulate in various organs with ageing, and its accumulation induces chronic inflammation and age-related physiological dysfunctions. Several remodelling of intracellular environments have been identified in senescent cells, including enlargement of cell/nuclear size and intracellular acidification. Although these alterations of intracellular environments were reported to be involved in the unique characteristics of senescent cells, the contribution of intracellular acidification to senescence-associated cellular phenotypes is poorly understood. Here, we identified that the upregulation of TXNIP and its paralog ARRDC4 as a hallmark of intracellular acidification in addition to KGA-type GLS1. These genes were also upregulated in response to senescence-associated intracellular acidification. Neutralization of the intracellular acidic environment ameliorated not only senescence-related upregulation of TXNIP , ARRDC4 and KGA but also inflammation-related genes, possibly through suppression of PDK-dependent anaerobic glycolysis. Furthermore, we found that expression of the intracellular acidification-induced genes, TXNIP and ARRDC4 , correlated with inflammatory gene expression in heterogeneous senescent cell population in vitro and even in vivo , implying that the contribution of intracellular pH to senescence-associated cellular features, such as SASP. Ticks transmit a variety of pathogens, including rickettsia and viruses, when they feed on blood, afflicting humans and other animals. Bioactive components acting on inflammation, coagulation, and the immune system were reported to facilitate ticks' ability to suck blood and transmit tick-borne diseases. In this study, a novel peptide, IstTx, from an Ixodes scapularis cDNA library was analyzed. The peptide IstTx, obtained by recombinant expression and purification, selectively inhibited a potassium channel, TREK-1, in a dose-dependent manner, with an IC50 of 23.46 ± 0.22 μM. The peptide IstTx exhibited different characteristics from fluoxetine, and the possible interaction of the peptide IstTx binding to the channel was explored by molecular docking. Notably, extracellular acidification raised its inhibitory efficacy on the TREK-1 channel. Softwater ponds with Lobelia dortmanna (EU habitat type 3110) represent the rarest aquatic habitat in Belgium. As in many other European countries, its unfavourable conservation status necessitates restoration according to the EU Habitats Directive, which is compromised by a range of pressures and faces increasing social–economic opposition. To explore appropriate goals and remaining obstacles for its ecological rehabilitation, we investigated the environmental history of a pond, formerly renowned for the occurrence of this habitat. We complemented monitoring data with information inferred from diatoms analysed from old samples, herbarium specimens and surface sediments, vegetation records, physical–chemical analyses and additional observations. This indicated almost circumneutral, slightly buffered and nutrient-poor conditions for the first decades of the 20th century. Deposition of atmospheric pollutants caused gradual acidification from the early 1940s, intensifying into mineral-acidic conditions by the 1970s. More recently, a period of alkalinisation and eutrophication followed despite some restoration efforts. We discuss these changes in the contexts of general setting, external pressures and internal processes. Reflecting upon the prospects for restoring the pond's emblematic biodiversity, management implications for this and other softwater sites dealing with similar problems are discussed. The Chukchi Sea shelf (CSS) is a highly productive region in the Arctic Ocean and it is highly efficient for absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide and exporting and retaining carbon in the deep sea. However, with global warming, the carbon retention time in CSS may decrease, leading to less efficient carbon export. Here, we investigate the seasonal variability of carbonate chemistry in CSS using three sets of late‐ vs. early‐summer reoccupations of the same transect. Our findings demonstrate substantially increased and rapid degradation of biologically produced organic matter and therefore acidification over time in the southern CSS due to earlier sea‐ice retreat, resulting in significantly shorter carbon retention time. In sharp contrast, no increased degradation has been observed in the northern CSS where photosynthesis has just commenced. In the future, climate change would further diminish the carbon export capacity and exacerbate seasonal acidification not only within CSS but also across other polar coastal oceans. Due to various human activities, including intensive agriculture, traffic, and the burning of fossil fuels, in many parts of the world, current levels of reactive nitrogen emissions strongly exceed pre‐industrial levels. Previous studies have shown that the atmospheric deposition of these excess nitrogen compounds onto semi‐natural terrestrial environments has negative consequences for plant diversity. However, these previous studies mostly investigated biodiversity loss at local spatial scales, that is, at the scales of plots of typically a few square meters. Whether increased atmospheric nitrogen deposition also affects plant diversity at larger spatial scales remains unknown. Here, using grassland plant community data collected in 765 plots, across 153 different sites and 9 countries in northwestern Europe, we investigate whether relationships between atmospheric nitrogen deposition and plant biodiversity are scale‐dependent. We found that high levels of atmospheric nitrogen deposition were associated with low levels of plant species richness at the plot scale but also at the scale of sites and regions. The presence of 39% of plant species was negatively associated with increasing levels of nitrogen deposition at large (site) scales, while only 1.5% of the species became more common with increasing nitrogen deposition, indicating that large‐scale biodiversity changes were mostly driven by "loser" species, while "winner" species profiting from high N deposition were rare. Some of the "loser" species whose site presence was negatively associated with atmospheric nitrogen deposition are listed as "threatened" in at least some EU member states, suggesting that nitrogen deposition may be a key contributor to their threat status. The utilization of microalgae to treat carbon dioxide (CO2)-rich industrial off-gas has been suggested as both beneficial for emissions reduction and economically favorable for the production of microalgal products. Common sources of off-gases include coal combustion (2–15% CO2), cement production (8–15% CO2), coke production (18–23% CO2), and ore smelting (6–7% CO2). However, industrial off-gas also commonly contains other acid gas components [typically nitrogen oxides (NOX) and sulfur dioxide (SO2)] and metals that could inhibit microalgae growth and productivity. To utilize industrial off-gas effectively in microalgae cultivation systems, a number of solutions have been proposed to overcome potential inhibitions. These include bioprospecting to identify suitable strains, genetic modification to improve specific cellular characteristics, chemical additions, and bioreactor designs and operating procedures. In this review, results from microalgae experiments related to utilizing off-gas are presented, and the outcomes of different conditions discussed along with potential solutions to resolve limitations associated with the application of off-gas. This study is dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Institute of Limnology, Russian Academy of Sciences. The main results of studying Russian lakes in the Academy of Sciences over three centuries are presented. In the 18th century, the Academy of Sciences organized first "physical" expeditions for studying lakes, lake regions, as well as the Aral and Caspian seas. In 1916, a Commission for Studying Lake Baikal was set up at the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. After 1917, the studies of lakes expanded considerably because of the practical needs of the country's development. In 1928, the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences transformed the Baikal expedition into the Baikal Limnological Station. In 1944, the Laboratory of Limnology was created in Leningrad, and in 1971, the Institute of Limnology, of the USSR Academy of Sciences was created. In the 1970s–1980s, comprehensive studies of lakes and lake–river systems were carried out in the European part of the USSR along the design line of the redistribution of the water resources in the country. In 1970–1980, USSR Academy of Sciences participated in solving global problems of limnology—eutrophication, acidification, and pollution of lakes. In the late XX–early XXI centuries, special attention was paid to the assessment of the state and the development of forecasts of changes in the ecosystems of water bodies under various climatic and anthropogenic impacts. Monographs were published, generalizing the history of lakes studies in various parts of the country, and complex atlases of large lakes in Russia were compiled. The discovery of periglacial Lake Vostok in the Antarctic, and the obtained scientific results are outstanding scientific achievements in the late XX century. It is shown that lake studies by the Russian Academy of Sciences have contributed much to the basic science and to solving practical problems of the country's economy, and are significant for the development of problems of continental hydrology. Aging of biochar can affect its stability and persistence of heavy metals immobilizing in soil, resulting in changes in its inertness. Using peanut shell(PS) as raw material, peanut shell biochar (PSB) was prepared by pyrolysis under the condition of 600 °C and hypoxia. Oxidized biochar(OPSB), leached biochar(LPSB) and acidified biochar (APSB) were prepared Y by simulated field oxidation, leaching and acidification of PSB. The effects of these three aging methods on the adsorption efficiency and mechanisms of Cd2+ by the biochar were investigated using isothermal adsorption models, kinetic models, FT-IR and XRD. The results show that oxidative aging process an significantly enhance the accumulation of oxygen-containing functional groups (--COOH, --OH, etc.) on the surface of the biochar, thereby increasing the adsorption capacity of OPSB for Cd2+ by 10.13%. Leaching aging process can not cause significant changes in functional group content but result in substantial loss of soluble minerals, leading to a significant decrease adsorption capacity of LPSB for Cd2+ by 13. 35%. Acidification aging process can affect the adsorptive activity of Cd2+ on the surface of the biochar, resulting in a reduction in adsorption capacity of APSB for Cd2+ by 26. 52%. All four types of biochar exhibite effective adsorption for Cd2+, the OPSB showing optimal affinity followed by PSB, LPSB, and APSB. The Langmuir isothermal adsorption model provides better fitting for describing the Cd2+ adsorption process by all four types of biochars under low pH conditions. Furthermore, the adsorptions processes by all four types of biochars are predominantly governed by physical electrostatic interactions, which is suitable to be described by quasi-first-order kinetic model. Studies of the energy metabolism in a bivalve mollusk, the ark clam Anadara kagoshimensis (Tokunaga, 1906), were carried out for the first time under experimental conditions simulating dynamic variations in the seawater characteristics at the stages of development and end of upwelling event in the Black Sea. It was shown that the level of energy metabolism of A. kagoshimensis, while being in the zone of upwelling formation, decreased, on average, by 5% per degree of temperature decrease. During the upwelling relaxation phase (14 → 26°C), the restoration of the respiration intensity parameters of the clam was slower than expected, with a temperature coefficient of Q10 = 1.31. The acidification of the seawater by 1.0 (up to рН 7.2), combined with a temperature decrease (26 → 20°C), aggravated the negative effect by 25–45%. It has been found that the clam A. kagoshimensis reduces energy expenditure by approximately 60% under upwelling conditions (cold stress and acidification). The consequences of the negative effect of a sharp temperature variation lead to a delay in the metabolism recovery to normal values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background The integration of anaerobic digestion into bio-based industries can create synergies that help render anaerobic digestion self-sustaining. Two-stage digesters with separate acidification stages allow for the production of green hydrogen and short-chain fatty acids, which are promising industrial products. Heat shocks can be used to foster the production of these products, the practical applicability of this treatment is often not addressed sufficiently, and the presented work therefore aims to close this gap. Methods Batch experiments were conducted in 5 L double-walled tank reactors incubated at 37 °C. Short microwave heat shocks of 25 min duration and exposure times of 5–10 min at 80 °C were performed and compared to oven heat shocks. Pairwise experimental group differences for gas production and chemical parameters were determined using ANOVA and post–hoc tests. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was performed to analyse taxonomic profiles. Results After heat–shocking the entire seed sludge, the highest hydrogen productivity was observed at a substrate load of 50 g/l with 1.09 mol H2/mol hexose. With 1.01 mol H2/mol hexose, microwave-assisted treatment was not significantly different from oven-based treatments. This study emphasised the better repeatability of heat shocks with microwave-assisted experiments, revealing low variation coefficients averaging 29%. The pre-treatment with microwaves results in a high predictability and a stronger microbial community shift to Clostridia compared to the treatment with the oven. The pre-treatment of heat shocks supported the formation of butyric acid up to 10.8 g/l on average, with a peak of 24.01 g/l at a butyric/acetic acid ratio of 2.0. Conclusion The results support the suitability of using heat shock for the entire seed sludge rather than just a small inoculum, making the process more relevant for industrial applications. The performed microwave-based treatment has proven to be a promising alternative to oven-based treatments, which ultimately may facilitate their implementation into industrial systems. This study aimed to examine the changes in selected soil properties at Lítov spoil heap (Sokolov, Czech Republic) and compare the current situation with the situation described twenty years ago. A total of 110 soil samples were taken at Lítov at the same sites as in 1998. The analyses of basic soil characteristics involved: exchangeable soil pH (pHKCl), organic carbon content (Cox), quality of humic substances (A400/A600), exchangeable acidity (Ea), and two types of aluminium contents in the soil. Changes in all soil characteristics between 1998 and 2018 were statistically evaluated, compared, and visualized using Geographical Information Systems (GIS). We have observed an increase of pHKCl, Cox and a slight improvement in humus quality compared to the results from 1998. The temporal changes of soil characteristics were evident in the whole area, and the influence of reclamation methods was also pronounced. Soil development close to the regional common natural conditions was found in the area where agricultural reclamation measures (i.e., covering with topsoil) were carried out. Furthermore, afforestation - mainly by deciduous trees - supported the improvement of soil characteristics favourable for plant growth. High pyrite content and marshland were identified as the main causes that led to vegetation cover mortality.

The efficacy of marine protected areas (MPAs) may be reduced when climate change disrupts the ecosystems and human communities around which they are designed. The effects of ocean warming on MPA functioning have received attention but less is known about how multiple climatic stressors may influence MPAs efficacy. Using a novel dataset incorporating 8.8 million oceanographic observations, we assess exposure to potentially stressful temperatures, dissolved oxygen concentrations, and pH levels across the California MPA network. This dataset covers more than two-thirds of California's 124 MPAs and multiple biogeographic domains. However, spatial-temporal and methodological patchiness constrains the extent to which systematic evaluation of exposure is possible across the network. In this work, the environmental fracture behavior of marine steel and its welding joint were compared in artificial seawater. The electrochemical measurement, slow strain rate tensile test, and low-frequency cyclic loading test were conducted. The results showed that the corrosion current density and stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of welding joints were higher than those of base metal, caused by high dislocation density and residual stress in the heat-affected zone. The acidification and ion concentration occurred at the crack tip of the welding joint and basic metal. pH value and Cl− concentration at the crack tip reached 4.1 and 3.8 mol/L, respectively. The crack growth rate of the welding joint was higher than that of base metal. The crack growth behavior was controlled by the mechano-electrochemical effect at the crack tip, and hydrogen embrittlement was the main factor.

Anaerobic digestion has been defined as a competitive approach to facilitate the recycling of corn stalks. However, few studies have focused on the role of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) pathway in the acidification stage under the addition of different particle sizes of zero-valent iron (ZVI). In this study, three types of ZVI, namely iron filings, iron powder and nanoscale iron, were investigated, respectively, to enhance its high-value conversion. Variations in volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and methane (CH 4) production associated with the underlying mechanisms were emphatically determined. Results indicated that the addition of ZVI could increase the concentration of VFAs, with the most outstanding performance observed with the use of nanoscale iron. Importantly, the conversion of propionic acid to acetic acid was driven by adding ZVI with no between-group differences in acidizing phase. Conversely, the substrate was more fully utilized when supplied with iron powder compared with other groups in methanogenic phase, thereby displaying the maximum CH 4 yield with a value of 263.1 mL/(g total solids (TS)). Crab is an exotic marine fishery commodity whose demand is increasing significantly in Indonesia. However, the industry also produces much waste in the form of crab shells, reaching 52.59% of its total weight. This waste (often called by-product) can be processed into several products with economic value such as chitosan, liquid organic fertilizer, and animal feed. This study assesses the environmental impact of crab shells processed into chitosan, liquid organic fertilizer, and animal feed. The study was carried out using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach with cradle-to-gate scope. The environmental impacts were observed consisting of some aspects such as Global Warming Potentials (GWP), Acidification Potentials (AP), Eutrophication Potentials (EP), and Cumulative Energy Demand (CED). The three-alternative utilization of crab shells produces environmental impacts resulting from fishing, transportation, and processing of the crab shells into these products. Afterward, the results of this study indicate that the crab shells processed into liquid fertilizer have the highest emission according to the GWP, AP, and CED values compared to the other by-product alternatives (i.e., chitosan and fertilizer). Whilst, the highest EP is produced by the processing of CS-based animal feed. These results can potentially become a consideration in making environmental policy by the local government, especially in Karawang Region.

Abstract By eliminating their minerals, acidification technology makes coal seams more permeable. Acidification technology were conducted in the Farr and Qinglong mining areas using a mixed acid solution to study the impact of acidification technology on increasing the permeability of primary structural coals in the Guizhou region, China. The microphysical and chemical structure of the coal samples before and after acidification transformation was compared using X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry experiments. The results show that after acidification, the volatile matter content is reduced by 4.2% and 16.25%, the carbon content is increased, the degree of coalification is deepened, the gas content of the coal seam is elevated, and the gas source is more abundant. The minerals on the surface are dissolved to different degrees, and the pores and cracks are dredged, so that the surface of the coal samples shows better connectivity, which is conducive to the diffusion and transport of coalbed methane. The volume and pore diameter of the macropore and mesopore in the Farr coal samples were improved after acidification, and the fractal structure was more prominent, the pore connectivity was good, and the pore diameter of the Qinglong coal samples was greatly increased. The content of oxygen‐containing functional groups increased by 11.2% and 2.1%, respectively, which is conducive to the desorption of coalbed methane after acidification, and with the increasing degree of metamorphism of the coal samples, the higher the content of oxygen‐containing functional groups was and the less pronounced the effect of acidification. Acidification technology can effectively remove the minerals in the coal body and has a good effect on penetration enhancement, and the results of the study can provide certain theoretical references for the penetration enhancement of coal seams in Guizhou mining areas.

Abstract Here, we test whether early visual and OCT rod energy-linked biomarkers indicating pathophysiology in nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (Nnt)-null 5xFAD mice also occur in Nnt-intact 5xFAD mice and whether these biomarkers can be pharmacologically treated. Four-month-old wild-type or 5xFAD C57BL/6 substrains with either a null (B6J) Nnt or intact Nnt gene (B6NTac) and 5xFAD B6J mice treated for one month with either R-carvedilol + vehicle or only vehicle (0.01% DMSO) were studied. The contrast sensitivity (CS), external limiting membrane-retinal pigment epithelium (ELM-RPE) thickness (a proxy for low pH-triggered water removal), profile shape of the hyperreflective band just posterior to the ELM (i.e., the mitochondrial configuration within photoreceptors per aspect ratio [MCP/AR]), and retinal laminar thickness were measured. Both wild-type substrains showed similar visual performance indices and dark-evoked ELM-RPE contraction. The lack of a light–dark change in B6NTac MCP/AR, unlike in B6J mice, is consistent with relatively greater mitochondrial efficiency. 5xFAD B6J mice, but not 5xFAD B6NTac mice, showed lower-than-WT CS. Light-adapted 5xFAD substrains both showed abnormal ELM-RPE contraction and greater-than-WT MCP/AR contraction. The inner retina and superior outer retina were thinner. Treating 5xFAD B6J mice with R-carvedilol + DMSO or DMSO alone corrected CS and ELM-RPE contraction but not supernormal MCP/AR contraction or laminar thinning. These results provide biomarker evidence for prodromal photoreceptor mitochondrial dysfunction/oxidative stress/oxidative damage, which is unrelated to visual performance, as well as the presence of the Nnt gene. This pathophysiology is druggable in 5xFAD mice.

Background Aim Methods Results Conclusion The use of sulfuric acid (SA) to acidify biochars is known to enhance their phosphorus (P) fertilizer value. Potentially, biological approaches such as lowering the pH of biochar by lactic acid co‐fermentation or applying biochar with a nitrification inhibitor (NI) to reduce rhizosphere pH are an alternative to SA.This study aimed to evaluate the two methods for increasing plant P availability from two biochars and compare them with SA‐treated biochars (as a reference) in a pot experiment.Meat and bone meal biochar (MB‐C) and digestate solids biochar (DS‐C) were bio‐acidified (BA) by lactic acid fermentation with organic waste. The untreated, SA‐treated, BA biochars, and biochars co‐applied with a NI (3,4‐dimethylpyrazolephosphate) were tested in a pot experiment with maize.The fermentation reduced the pH of the organic waste biochar mixtures to <4.3 and increased water‐extractable P (WEP) to 30% of total P. The untreated biochars had a mineral fertilizer replacement value of >50% and SA increased replacement values to ≈100%. The application of NI did not affect rhizosphere pH or P uptake. The BA MB‐C increased soil solution P concentration, but P uptake did not significantly increase. The application of the BA DS‐C raised soil pH and reduced plant P uptake and biomass.The untreated biochars showed considerable P fertilizer effectiveness, suggesting that acidification may not always be necessary. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important secondary messengers involved in a variety of cellular processes, including activation, proliferation, and differentiation. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a major ROS typically kept in low nanomolar range that causes cell and tissue damage at supraphysiological concentrations. While ROS have been studied in detail at molecular scale, little is known about their impact on cell mechanical properties as label-free biomarker for stress response. Here, we exposed human myeloid precursor cells, T-lymphoid cells and neutrophils to varying concentrations of H2O2 and show that elevated levels of mitochondrial superoxide are accompanied by an increased Young's modulus. Mechanical alterations do not originate from global modifications in filamentous actin and microtubules but from cytosolic acidification due to lysosomal degradation. Finally, we demonstrate our findings to be independent of the presence of H2O2 and that stiffening seems to be a general response of cells to stress factors lowering cytosolic pH. As a retarding acid solution system, solid particle acid has the ability to deeply enter carbonate reservoirs during acidification. It is of great significance for optimization and evaluation of acid types to clarify the acidification mechanism of solid particle acid in carbonate reservoirs. Thus, a new mathematical model for description of the solid particle acidification process of carbonate rocks was proposed to characterize the slow release performance of particle acid and further study the effects of injection rate and particle acid concentration on the acidification process of carbonate reservoirs. The results indicate that the carbonate reservoir is corroded less due to lower particle acid concentration around the inlet, and high acid concentration distributes far from the inlet. With increasing particle acid concentration, the type of corrosion changes from uniform corrosion to directional conical wormholes, and the length and width of the wormholes increase and decrease, respectively. Long Island Sound (LIS) is a highly urbanized estuary that receives high inputs of nitrogen pollution leading to summertime hypoxia in the bottom waters of its western region. Though LIS hypoxia has been well-studied for decades, there is a paucity of information regarding eutrophication-induced acidification due to the challenges of obtaining high-precision observations of the marine carbonate system. In this work, we established a time-series of carbon dioxide (CO2) system observations in LIS through measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) during thirteen sampling events between March 2020 and August 2022. This time span captured both seasonal and interannual variation, including the contrast between two historic drought years (2020 and 2022) and one high-freshwater flow year with significant tropical storm activity (2021). Observations revealed reduced acidification in western LIS (WLIS) (minimum aragonite saturation state, Ωar > 1.5) during the high-river discharge summer of 2021, corresponding to a decrease in the DIC/TA ratio of the Housatonic River. By contrast, LIS bottom water DIC and DIC/TA were higher during the drought summers of 2020 and 2022 (bottom DIC/TA = 0.9-1.0 and 0.85-0.9 in 2020 and 2021, respectively), leading to more acidified conditions and persistent aragonite undersaturation (minimum Ωar <1.0 and 1.1 in 2020 and 2022, respectively). Increased river discharge mitigated respiration-induced acidification in WLIS, likely due to a combination of decreased estuarine residence time and reduced riverine DIC/TA. These results motivate future studies of the carbonate chemistry of LIS and its freshwater endmembers in relation to hypoxia dynamics, with consideration of climate related shifts in physical and biological dynamics of the estuary with time. This study examines the potential impacts of projected atmospheric carbon dioxide (pCO2) levels reaching 800 ppm by the end of the century, focusing on ocean acidification effects onmarine ecosystems in the coastal areas of Bohai.We investigated how acidification affects the grazing patterns of microzooplankton using dilution techniques and ecophysiological methods. Our findings indicate that acidic conditions shift the phytoplankton community structure, changing dominant species. Elevated CO2 concentrations reduced grazing pressure on phytoplankton, with less steep declines in growth rates at 800 ppm CO² (spring: 2.43 d-1 vs. 2.16 d-1, summer: -0.46 d-1 vs. -0.73 d-1, autumn: -0.45 d-1 vs. -0.90 d-1) and significant decreases in grazing pressure percentages (%Pp from 0.84 to 0.58 and %Pi from 0.64 to 0.46). Short-term acid exposure significantly increased superoxide dismutase activity in both microplankton (from 0.03 to 0.08 U mg-1, p<0.01) and nanoplankton (from 0.05 to 0.09 U mg-1, p<0.001), indicating an adaptive response to oxidative stress. These results highlight that elevated CO2 levels primarily boost phytoplankton growth by reducing microzooplankton grazing pressure, resulting in higher growth rates and a shift towards smallersized phytoplankton, reflecting complex short-term ecological responses to acidification. Background Aims Methods Results Conclusion Neither the magnitude of boron (B) depletion in agricultural soils nor the driving factors of this process have been systematically studied before.The objectives of our study were to survey the extractable B (Be) in pristine soils as compared with cultivated soils, to estimate the yearly B depletion rate in agroecosystems, and to identify the edaphic, productive, and/or climatic factors determining that rate.Surface soil samples (0–20 cm layer) were taken from uncropped (UC) sites and nearby agricultural fields in 2011 and 2018 (AGR2011 and AGR2018, respectively) from the Argentinean Pampas. In these samples, Be and other edaphoclimatic and productive variables were determined, such as clay content, precipitation (PP), pH, evapotranspiration (ET), soil organic matter (SOM), and B removal with crop grains (RB).The Be concentration decreased with agricultural activity, because UC soils had an average Be value of 1.9 mg kg−1, whereas AGR2011 and AGR2018 soils had values of 1.3 and 0.9 mg kg−1, respectively. The depletion rate from 2018 to 2011 ranged from 0.01 to 0.06 mg kg−1 y−1, and the main factors associated with this process were RB, PP, soil acidification, and SOM depletion (promoting B depletion) and ET and clay (reducing depletion).At current rates, B depletion from these agricultural soils could compromise B availability for crops in the short‐to‐medium term, depending on regional differences caused by edaphoclimatic and productive differences (RB, PP, pH, SOM, ET, and clay). Background and Objective: One of the major challenges in the calcium looping process is the loss of CO2 capture capacity of calcium-based sorbents during consecutive cycles due to increased sintering mechanism. This article aims to improve the performance of carbonation conversion in different cycles by employing hydration and acidification methods. Materials and Methods: Following the preparation of both CaO-based and modified sorbents, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analyses were employed to verify the proper preparation of the sorbents and examine their structures. Subsequently, the adsorption performance of different samples was assessed using a thermogravimetric analyzer device . Results: The results of the carbonation reaction showed that the effective conversion rates for the raw and modified sorbents, employing acidification and hydration methods, at the end of the first cycle were 75%, 86%, and 73%, respectively. By the twentieth cycle, these rates decreased to 24%, 38%, and 26%, respectively. This decline indicates an improvement in the sorbent's capture capacity, attributed to the formation of calcium acetate, resulting in a more stable and porous structure. The findings from utilizing raw limestone sorbents and their modified versions through acidification and hydration techniques demonstrated a decrease in sorbent capture capacity by 69, 58, and 67% across twenty cycles. This highlights the enhanced sorbent stability achieved with the acidification method. To reduce energy consumption, a new pulping process called A-D-E-RC (acidification/desalination/electrolysis/recycle-cooking) was developed by a research group in Guangxi University of China. The present work focuses on the step of recycle cooking (RC) to further investigate the technical feasibility of A-D-E-RC methods. Golden bamboo grass was considered as fiber source material for pulp, and it was cooked with the acidic treating of wastewater from black liquor. Then, the pulp obtained from each cooking was made into paper to test the changes in its physical properties. As a result, the pulp yield increased from 43.9% to 50.2%, after re-using acidified black liquor, and the paper's tear index and tensile index were improved. Therefore, this study demonstrated the feasibility of recycle cooking (RC) fiber materials for pulp applied the acidic treating wastewater from black liquor, and thereby, it further identifies the technical feasibility of A-D-E-RC pulping methods. Unstable and simplified freshwater food webs impair the resilience of Canadian fisheries facing environmental stressors. This study utilizes stable isotope analyses to assess trophic recovery to explore food web resiliency in lakes historically impacted by metal mining in Sudbury, Ontario. Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope ratios were quantified in yellow perch (Perca flavescens), smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu), and baseline organisms to develop quantitative population metrics and describe dietary niche partitioning. The most severely damaged lake with a barren watershed had the lowest trophic positioning, smallest body size and niche area, and greatest niche overlap among fish species. Semi-barren and forested watershed lakes were more similar to reference lakes in isotopic metrics; however, elevated niche overlap and reduced trophic positioning suggests recovery in these lakes is ongoing. We found that including stable isotope analyses in lake recovery studies provided critical insights not captured by traditional biomonitoring approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rupture of the Fundão dam (Mariana, Brazil) resulted in various environmental and socio-economic impacts on riverside communities. However, the effects of iron mining tailings on the cultivation of vegetables and annual crops still need to be clarified, especially regarding the bioavailability of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), which may be exacerbated by the acidification of the tailings. Thus, this study aimed to assess the acidification of the tailings on the growth and availability, uptake, and accumulation of PTEs (Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, and Cu) in plants. Tailings samples were collected from the banks of the Gualaxo do Norte River (Mariana, MG, Brazil), and were characterized physically and chemically. Experiments on the availability, uptake, and accumulation of PTEs were conducted in a greenhouse, using four plant species: tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), radish (Raphanus sativus L.), and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench), in a completely randomized design with three treatments (non-acidified tailings (pH 7.23), acidified tailings (pH 5.00), and reference soil (pH 5.33)), each with five replications. The availability and accumulation of PTEs were quantified. Most of the analyzed PTEs showed higher concentrations in plants grown in the reference soil. Conversion to fresh mass was performed when examining the levels of PTEs in the edible parts of the cultivated crops. In both acidified and non-acidified tailings, the levels of PTEs were within the standards permitted by Brazilian legislation. The cultivation of tomato, radish, and sorghum is restricted when grown in tailing at normal or acidified pH levels, while lettuce has no restrictions. Overall, the tailings did not pose risks regarding the PTEs content in plants for consumption, even when acidified to pH 5.00. However, they exhibited Mn phytotoxic levels, which, combined with the high presence of silt and sand, affected the development of the plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Group‐living in animals comes with a number of benefits associated with predator avoidance, foraging, and reproduction. A large proportion of fish species display grouping behaviour. Fish may also be particularly vulnerable to climate‐related stressors including thermal variation, hypoxia, and acidification. As climate‐related stressors are expected to increase in magnitude and frequency, any effects on fish behaviour may be increased and affect the ability of fish species to cope with changing conditions. Here we conduct a systematic review of the effects of temperature, hypoxia, and acidification on individual sociability and group cohesion in shoaling and schooling fishes. Searches of the published and grey literature were carried out, and studies were included or excluded based on selection criteria. Data from studies were then included in a meta‐analysis to examine broad patterns of effects of climate‐related stressors in the literature. Evidence was found for a reduction in group cohesion at low oxygen levels, which was stronger in smaller groups. While several studies reported effects of temperature and acidification, there was no consistent effect of either stressor on sociability or cohesion. There was some evidence that marine fishes are more strongly negatively affected by acidification compared with freshwater species, but results are similarly inconsistent and more studies are required. Additional studies of two or more stressors in combination are also needed, although one study found reduced sociability following exposure to acidification and high temperatures. Overall, there is some evidence that hypoxia, and potentially other climate‐related environmental changes, impact sociability and group cohesion in fishes. This may reduce survival and adaptability in shoaling and schooling species and have further ecological implications for aquatic systems. Despite accumulating evidence linking defective lysosome function with autoimmune diseases, how the catabolic machinery is regulated to maintain immune homeostasis remains unknown. Late endosomal/lysosomal adaptor, MAPK and mTOR activator 5 (Lamtor5) is a subunit of the Ragulator mediating mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) activation in response to amino acids, but its action mode and physiological role are still unclear. Here it is demonstrated that Lamtor5 level is markedly decreased in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In parallel, the mice with myeloid Lamtor5 ablation developed SLE‐like manifestation. Impaired lysosomal function and aberrant activation of mTORC1 are evidenced in Lamtor5 deficient macrophages and PBMCs of SLE patients, accompanied by blunted autolysosomal pathway and undesirable inflammatory responses. Mechanistically, it is shown that Lamtor5 is physically associated with ATP6V1A, an essential subunit of vacuolar H+‐ATPase (v‐ATPase), and promoted the V0/V1 holoenzyme assembly to facilitate lysosome acidification. The binding of Lamtor5 to v‐ATPase affected the lysosomal tethering of Rag GTPase and weakened its interaction with mTORC1 for activation. Overall, Lamtor5 is identified as a critical factor for immune homeostasis by intergrading v‐ATPase activity, lysosome function, and mTOR pathway. Aims: As uterine extracellular pH decreases during the ischemic conditions of labor, but its effects on myometrial contraction are largely unknown, there is a need to elucidate its physiological effects and mechanisms of action. Furthermore, it is not known if any of the effects of extracellular acidification are affected by pregnancy, thus we also determined how gestation affects the response to acidification. Methods: Nonpregnant, mid‐, and term‐pregnant myometrial strips were obtained from humanely killed mice. Contractions were recorded under spontaneous, depolarized, and oxytocin‐stimulated conditions. The extracellular pH of the perfusate was changed from 7.4 to 6.9 or 7.9 in HEPES‐buffered physiological saline. Intracellular pH was measured using SNARF, and intracellular calcium was measured using Indo‐1. Statistical differences were tested using the appropriate t‐test. Results: Extracellular acidification significantly increased the frequency and amplitude of spontaneous contractions in pregnant, but not nonpregnant, myometrium, whereas alkalinization decreased contractions. Intracellular acidification, via Na‐butyrate, transiently increased force in pregnant tissue. Intracellular pH was gradually acidified when extracellular pH was acidified, but extracellular acidification increased contractility before any significant change in intracellular pH. If myometrial force was driven by oxytocin or high‐K depolarization, then extracellular pH did not further increase force. Intracellular calcium changes mirrored those of force in the spontaneously contracting pregnant myometrium, and if calcium entry was prevented by nifedipine, extracellular acidification could not induce a rise in force. Conclusion: Extracellular acidification increases excitability, calcium entry, and thus force in pregnant mouse myometrium, and this may contribute to increasing contractions during labor when ischemic conditions and acidemia occur.
