Recent global market disruptions, including the COVID-19 crisis, inflation, and oil crises, have highlighted the need for industries to reduce dependence on petrochemicals. However, the coating industry remains reliant on petrochemicals due to a lack of knowledge about local and sustainable alternatives. This study explored the potential of wood extractives as precursors for producing high-quality wood coatings. Terpenes were modified through acrylation, and bio-based latexes were synthesized from these modified terpenes. Analysis showed that all tested latexes had conversion levels above 88.5%. The bio-based films were characterized, and their transparency, measured by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, exceeded 80%. The good incorporation of bio-based monomers in the latex films was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Comparative analysis between bio-based and conventional latexes showed equivalent results in particle size, molecular weight, glass transition temperature, and minimum film formation temperature. However, bio-based films exhibited lower hardness. The study suggests that using monomers derived from wood extractives offers a viable alternative to petrochemicals, utilizing abundant forest residues. The physicochemical properties of high-molecular weight compounds based on N,N-diallyl-N′-acyllhydrazines were studied. Based on the results of thermal analysis it was established that sorbents are stable up to 160–210 °C; the destruction of the initial N,N-diallyl-N′-acyllhydrazines starts at lower temperatures. The stability of sorbents in various media, the values of static exchange capacities for hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions ( SEC H + and SEC OH − ), and isoelectric points of the surface were determined. Rhodococcus strains were designed as model biocatalysts (BCs) for the production of acrylic acid and mixtures of acrylic monomers consisting of acrylamide, acrylic acid, and N-alkylacrylamide (N-isopropylacrylamide). To obtain BC strains, we used, among other approaches, adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE), based on the use of the metabolic pathway of amide utilization. Whole genome sequencing of the strains obtained after ALE, as well as subsequent targeted gene disruption, identified candidate genes for three new amidases that are promising for the development of BCs for the production of acrylic acid from acrylamide. New BCs had two types of amidase activities, acrylamide-hydrolyzing and acrylamide-transferring, and by varying the ratio of these activities in BCs, it is possible to influence the ratio of monomers in the resulting mixtures. Based on these strains, a prototype of a new technological concept for the biocatalytic synthesis of acrylic monomers was developed for the production of water-soluble acrylic heteropolymers containing valuable N-alkylacrylamide units. In addition to the possibility of obtaining mixtures of different compositions, the advantages of the concept are a single starting reagent (acrylamide), more unification of processes (all processes are based on the same type of biocatalyst), and potentially greater safety for personnel and the environment compared to existing chemical technologies.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are crystalline nano-rods that have high specific strength with hydroxyl surface chemistry. A wide range of chemical modifications have been performed on the surface of CNCs to increase their potential to be used in applications where compatibilization with other materials is required. Understanding the surface chemistry of CNCs and critically examining the functionalization technique are crucial to enable control over the extent of modification and the properties of CNCs. This work aims to optimize the surface modification of wood-derived CNCs with isocyanatoethyl methacrylate (IEM), a bifunctional molecule carrying both isocyanate and vinyl functional groups. We studied the effect of modification reaction time and temperature on the degree of substitution, crystallinity, and morphology of the CNCs. We found that the degree of modification is a strong and increasing function of reaction temperature over the range studied. However, the highest temperature (65 °C) and the longest time of reaction (6 h) resulted in shorter, thinner, and less crystalline CNCs. We obtained surface hydroxyl conversion of 60.1 ± 6% and percent crystallinity of 84% by keeping the reaction shorter (30 min) at 65 ºC. Also, the copolymerization ability of modified CNCs was verified by polymerizing attached IEM groups with acrylic monomers via solution polymerization. The polymer-grafted CNCs (6% w/w) dispersed better in an acrylic polymer matrix compared to unmodified CNCs (umCNCs), resulting in approximately 100% improvement in the tensile strength and about 53% enhancement in the hardness of the acrylic, whereas addition of 6% w/w umCNCs did not influence the strength and hardness. The purpose of the present study was to use pH sensitive polyelectrolyte methyl methacrylate (MMA)/itaconic acid (IA) nanogels as carriers in an attempt to improve absorption of insulin administered orally.Methods: Insulin (Ins) was incorporated into the MMA/IA nanogels (NGs) using the polyelectrolyte complexation (PEC) method to form Ins/NGs-PEC. Several parameters, including Ins:NGs ratio, pH, incubation time and stirring rate were optimized during preparation of InsNGs-PEC. The prepared formulations were characterized in terms of particle size (PS), polydispersity index (PdI), zeta potential (ZP) and percent entrapment efficiency (% EE).Results: The optimized InF12 nanogels had a PS, PdI, ZP and %EE of 190.43 nm, 0.186, −16.70 mV and 85.20%, respectively. The InF12 nanogels were lyophilized in the presence of different concentrations of trehalose as cryoprotectant. The lyophilized InF12 containing 2%w/v trahalose (InF12-Tre2 nanogels) was chosen as final formulation which had a PS, PdI, ZP and %EE of 430.50 nm, 0.588, −16.50 mv and 82.10, respectively. The in vitro release of insulin from InF12-Tre2 nanogels in the SGF and SIF were 28.71% and 96.53%, respectively. The stability study conducted at 5±3°C for 3 months showed that lnF12-Tre2 nanogels were stable. The SDS-PAGE assay indicated that the primary structure of insulin in the lnF12-Tre2 nanogels was intact. The in-vivo study in the diabetic rats following oral administration of InF12-Tre2 nanogels at a dose of 100 IU/kg body weight reduced blood glucose level significantly to 51.10% after 6 hours compared to the control groups.Conclusions: The pH sensitive MMA/IA nanogels are potential carriers for oral delivery of insulin as they enhanced the absorption of the drug.Keywords: acrylic monomers, peptides self assembly, lyophilization, hypoglycemic effect, polymeric nanogels

Copolymers of N,N-diallyl-Nʹ-acetylhydrazine and N,N-diallyl-Nʹ-benzoylhydrazine with acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, and acrylamide were synthesized by radical copolymerization in the presence of a radical initiator azobisisobutyronitrile. The borohydride method was used to produce new polymer nanocomposites containing silver nanoparticles 31–55 nm in size, stabilized by synthesized copolymers of N,N-diallyl-Nʹ-acylhydrazines. The presence of heteroatomic fragments and functional groups (carboxyl, amide, nitrile, acetyl, benzoyl, hydrazine) in the polymer chain promotes specific interaction with silver particles, regulating the particle size at the nanoscale and ensuring their uniform distribution in the polymer matrix. Structural features of nanocomposites were investigated using UV, IR, NMR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The produced nanocomposites exhibit cytotoxic activity against MS melanoma cells and RD rhabdomyosarcoma cells and are promising as new-generation drugs intended for the treatment of cancerous tumors. The kinetics and mechanism of benzoyl peroxide- and azobisisobutyronitrile-initiated polymerization of acrylic acid and methyl acrylate in the temperature range of 20–40°C have been investigated. In the case of evacuation of the monomer + initiator system, the polymerization proceeds without heating or other energetic impacts on the system. The polymer yield depends on the initiator concentration and the temperature and time of sample thermostating. It has been shown by EPR that the monomers affect the rate of initiator decomposition into radicals. The structures of intermediate complexes formed in the acrylic acid + azobisisobutyronitrile system have been determined by quantum-chemical calculations, and the activation energies of the relevant processes have been calculated. Thermally curable pressure-sensitive structural adhesives tapes (SATs) were compounded using a solid epoxy resin and multifunctional acrylic telomer solutions (MATs) prepared by a thermally initiated telomerization process in an epoxy diluent containing two kinds of telogens (CBr4 or CBrCl3). Dynamic viscosity, K-value, and volatile mater content in MATs (i.e., MAT-T with CBr4, MAT-B with CBrCl3) were investigated in relation to telogen type and content. The influence of MATs on the self-adhesive features and curing behavior of UV-crosslinked tapes as well as on the shear strength of thermally cured aluminum–SAT–aluminum joints was investigated as well. Increasing the telogen dose (from 5 to 15 wt. parts) caused significant improvement in the adhesion (+315% and +184%), tack (+147% and +298%), and cohesion (+414% and +1716%) of SATs based on MAT-T and MAT-B, respectively. Additionally, MATs with high telogen content (especially the MAT-T-type) improved the resistance of cured joints to aviation fuel, humidity, and elevated temperature. The highest overlap shear strength values were registered for SATs based on MATs containing 7.5 wt. parts of CBr4 (16.7 MPa) or 10 wt. parts of CBrCl3 (15.3 MPa).

The synthesis and phase characterisation of a homologous series of monomers of acrylic phenyl benzoates has been carried out. The characterisation comprises polarised optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and powder x-ray diffractometry. All monomers are mesogenic, exhibiting either nematic and/or smectic phase. Shorter monomers are nematogenic while longer monomers show a more smectogenic character. As a kind of promising optoelectrical material, all-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) have attracted much attention, due to their excellent optoelectrical characteristics, in recent years. However, their synthesis approaches require rigorous conditions, including high temperature, eco-unfriendly solvent or complex post-synthesis process. Herein, to overcome these issues, we reported a novel facile room temperature in-situ strategy using ultraviolet polymerizable acrylic monomer as solvent to synthesis CsPbX3 nanocrystals without a complex post-synthesis process. In this strategy, adequate soluble precursors of Cs, Pb and Br and reaction terminating agent 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) were used. The obtained CsPbBr3 nanocrystals showed a high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) of 87.5%. The corresponding polymer composites, by adding light initiator and oligomer under ultraviolet light radiation, performed excellent stability in light, air, moisture and high temperature. The reaction process and the effect of the reaction terminating agent have been investigated in detail. Biodegradable bi-functional cellulose derivatives were synthesized to remove widespread underground water cations such as; Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Fe 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Cu 2+ . Firstly, graft copolymerization of cellulose with binary monomers such as acrylic acid (AA), and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) with acrylamide (Am) were achieved using potassium persulfate as initiator. Then, cellulose/clay composites were prepared by graft copolymerization of cellulose using different montmorillonite concentrations such as 3, 6 and 9% weight/cellulose weight. The obtained Biodegradable grafted cellulose and their composites were used as adsorbents for the removal of Ca, Mg, Fe, Pb, and Cu ions individually from aqueous solutions. A possible reaction mechanism was deduced and the products were characterized by Fourier transfer infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermal degradation by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results obtained from this study revealed that as the content of clay increases, the uptake of cations increasing and the removal order of the composites were Pb 2+  > Mg 2+  > Fe 2+  > Cu 2+  > Ca 2+ . The novelty principally concerns the chemical approach of the redox grafting reaction that was carried out in the presence of sodium perborate (SPB) initiator. Before the grafting reaction was started, the wool fabric was treated first with a freshly prepared ferrous ammonium sulfate (FAS) solution. The so-treated fabric formed, with SPB, an efficacious redox system capable of initiating grafting of methacrylic acid (MAA) and other acrylic monomers onto the wool fabric. The effect of the polymerization conditions on the polymer criteria, namely, graft yield (%GY), homopolymer (%HP), total conversion (%TC), and grafting efficiency (%GE), was studied. These polymer criteria were found to depend spaciously upon concentrations of the Fe2+ ion (activator), SPB (initiator), and MAA, pH of the polymerization medium, duration and temperature of polymerization. The graft copolymerization reaction has also been carried out in the presence of polymerization activators (e.g. reductant transition metal ions) and an inhibitor (e.g. hydroquinone). A suitable mechanism for the grafting processes has been suggested, in accordance with the experimental results.

The aim of the present study was the development and characterization of a novel heterocyclic monomer bearing acrylic function with silane moieties methacryloxydimethylsilyl benzotriazole (MDSB) and its application in the preparation of alkyd-acrylic hybrid emulsions. The structural conformation of MDSB was ascertained from FT-IR and NMR spectral studies. The obtained copolymer dispersions were stable for several months and had decreased thermal stability relative to neat alkyd resin due to the lower pyrolysis temperature of acrylates. Acrylic copolymers are useful in medical therapeutics. As in dental implants or intraocular lenses, acrylics are present in many medical devices or drug adjuvants. Industrial using of acrylics is still important in painting or textile manufacturing. Scientific research background has proved that acrylic suffer for depolymerized and cross-linking mechanisms under heating and photo-oxidative conditions. Those aging processes could lead to release of unreacted monomers and degradation products. We developed a new RP-HPLC method with good resolution, recovery, linearity, detection and quantification limits that is efficient for acrylic monomers quantification in in vitro and in vivo saline solution matrices. This method allows the detection of copolymer and medical devices degradation products too. Both the limit of quantification and the limit of detection for monomers and degradation products are above cytotoxic concentrations for human epithelial cells. Those biological results confirm the interest of the method for dosage of unreacted acrylics after polymerization and for the research of degradation products in body fluids as aqueous humor. Maxillofacial prostheses is a dental medicine specialty aimed at restoring anatomical facial defects caused by cancer, trauma or congenital malformations through an artificial device, which is commonly attached to the skin with the help of an adhesive. The purpose of our research was to develop a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) based on acrylic monomers, characterizing and determining its drying kinetics, that is to say the time it takes to lose 50 to 90% of its moisture. The adhesive synthesis was realized by means of emulsion polymerization; the composition of formulations was: (AA‑MMA‑EA) and (AA‑MMA‑2EHA) with different molar ratios. The formulation based on (AA‑MMA‑2EHA) with 50 w% of solids, presented good adhesive properties such as tack, bond strength, and short drying time. We propose this formulation as a PSA, because it offers an alternative for systemically compromised patients, by less irritation compared to organic solvent-based adhesives.

The synthesis and phase characterisation of two homologous series of monomers of acrylic azo-compounds has been presented. The characterisation comprises polarising optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and powder X-ray diffractometry (PXRD). All studied monomers exhibit a narrow nematic phase with decrease in temperature range while increasing the alkoxy tail length. For the resorcinic azo benzenes at higher tail lengths, SmA and SmC phases are present. Phenolic azo compounds show only SmA phase. The resorcinic family showed more stable phases, with broader liquid crystalline temperature range than its phenolic equivalent. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The spontaneous polymerization, i.e, runaway, of acrylic acid during storage is a serious problem which may endanger life and facilities. In respond to a starting polymerization, effective emergency measures are necessary. For these investigations, a polytropic reactor setup, namely, an isoperibolic reactor is introduced to offer a rational access to restabilization studies. Furthermore, safety diagrams are created where the used amount of stabilizer is plotted against the polymerization progress in terms of the rising temperature. Such diagrams display the minimum required amount of the shortstopper (RESTAB™) for terminating a runaway polymerization. An approach to modify the properties of UV curable polyurethane coatings by altering the amount and functionality of acrylic reactive diluents, in order to optimize the coating performance, is demonstrated. Based on the rheology analysis, a model of the rheological behavior of the UV curable materials depending on the amount and type of a reactive diluent in the composition is demonstrated in this study. The relationships between the rheological behavior, the mechanical properties and adhesion of the coatings prepared from polyurethane UV curable compositions containing different amounts and functionalities of acrylic reactive diluents, have been investigated and discussed in this study. Based on the results of the study, the desired properties of UV cured coatings can be modeled and controlled without changing the nature of a particularly selected oligomer, thus maintaining the advantages of its chemical structure in a coating composition.
