In this article, a model predictive control (MPC) strategy based on the optimal switching sequence (OSS) concept for a single-phase grid-connected H-bridge neutral-point-clamped (H-NPC) power converter is presented. The proposed OSS-MPC algorithm considers both the grid current tracking error and the dc-link capacitor voltage balance. Special emphasis is placed on the power converter control region in order to design suitable switching sequence candidates for this multiobjective control problem. Additionally, based on an analysis of the weighting factor effect over closed-loop performance, it is possible to demonstrate that this controller parameter is relatively easy to adjust. In fact, the weighting factor only affects the peak current during transients, with no effect over the steady-state performance. As a result, the proposed OSS-MPC provides a fast closed-loop dynamic to the H-NPC converter, which operates with a fixed switching frequency at all times. In medium-voltage drives, multistep model predictive control (MPC) can lower the total harmonic distortion of the stator currents and thereby reduce losses and improve efficiency. However, from the point of view of implementation, there is still uncertainty as to whether transients have a major adverse effect on achieving this improved steady-state performance. The time-varying nature of machine drives, initialization of the optimization process, and limited computational resources are identified as key factors. This paper analyzes the link between these key factors in detail, thus a suitable reformulation and selective initialization approach is designed to enable the deterministic use of multistep finite-control-set MPC irrespective of the drive system conditions. Guidelines to select the prediction horizon, weighting factor, and minimum switching frequency considering the control platform limitations are presented. The significant impacts of transients on the design and experimental validation, covering several drive conditions, are evaluated in a scaled-down three-level induction machine drive switching at 350 Hz. The implementation of multistep direct model predictive control (MPC) for dc–dc boost converters overcomes the well-known issue of nonminimum phase behavior. However, it can lead to a high computational burden depending on the prediction horizon length. In this paper, a simple and computationally efficient MPC method for dc–dc boost converters is proposed. The key novelty of the presented control strategy lies in the way dynamic references are handled. The control strategy is capable of providing suitable references for the inductor current and the output voltage, without requiring additional control loops. Moreover, this reference design allows the predictive controller to be implemented with a single-step prediction horizon. Thus, a significant reduction in the required real-time calculations executed in the control hardware is achieved. To obtain constant switching frequency, the power switch commutation instants within a sampling period are considered as control inputs. Therefore, the predictive controller is formulated as a continuous control set MPC. Additionally, the proposed formulation is able to deal with different operation modes of the converter without changing the controller structure. Finally, an observer is used to dynamically modify the reference to provide robustness to system parameter uncertainties. Simulation and experimental results show an accurate tracking of dynamic inductor current and output voltage references, while respecting the restrictions on maximum inductor current levels of the converter. This paper introduces the concept of fast-swap charging (FSC), an operation mode designed to improve the operating cost-efficiency relation in on-board-powered light rail (LR) networks. The main concept is to swap the depleted energy storage units for fresh, pre-charged units in every cycle after the LR vehicle arrives at its terminus. The proposed operation mode allows the empty energy storage components to be charged at low electricity-demand periods, such as at night, so that a cheaper kWh tariff is accessed. Energy efficiency models capable of assessing the energy efficiency are developed as a framework for practical case studies. Finally, a case study illustrating the effects of different operation modes on the selection and optimal sizing of energy storage components, and the energy efficiency of the Zhuhai route, China, is included. Vehicle to grid (V2G) reactive power compensation using electric vehicle (EV) onboard chargers helps to ensure grid power quality by achieving unity power factor operation. However, the use of EVs for V2G reactive power compensation increases the second-order harmonic ripple current component at the DC-side of the charger. For single-phase, single-stage EV chargers, the ripple current component has to be supplied by the EV battery, unless a ripple compensation method is employed. Additionally, continuous usage of EV chargers for reactive power compensation, when the EV battery is not charging from the grid, exposes the EV battery to these undesirable ripple current components for a longer period and discharges the battery due to power conversion losses. This paper presents a way to provide V2G reactive power compensation through a boost inverter-based single stage EV charger and a DC-side capacitor without adversely affecting the EV battery. The operation of the boost inverter-based EV charger with second-order harmonic and switching frequency ripple current reduction, the dynamic behavior of the system, the transition between different operating modes, the DC-side capacitor voltage control above a minimum allowed voltage, and the DC-side capacitor sizing are extensively analyzed. The performance of the proposed system is verified using an experimental prototype, and presented results demonstrate the ability of the system to provide V2G reactive power compensation both with and without the EV battery. In this study, a model predictive control (MPC) strategy that combines finite-control-set MPC with selective harmonic elimination (SHE) modulation pattern in its formulation is proposed to govern multilevel power converters. Based on a desired operating point for the system state (converter current reference), an associated predefined SHE voltage pattern is obtained as a required steady-state control input reference. Then, the cost function is formulated with the inclusion of both system state and control input references. According with the proposed reference and cost function formulation, the predictive controller prefers to track the converter output current reference in transients, while preserving the SHE voltage pattern in steady state. Hence, as evidenced by experimental results, a fast dynamic response is obtained throughout transients while a predefined voltage and current spectrum with low switching frequency is achieved in steady state. This paper presents a predictive control strategy for grid-connected cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converters under unbalanced power generation among each converter phase. The proposed controller belongs to the finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) family and is designed to extract unbalanced power from each CHB converter phase while providing balanced power to the grid. The key novelty of this strategy lies in the way the unbalanced power generation among the phases is explicitly considered into the optimal control problem. Power balance is achieved by enforcing the CHB converter to work with a suitable zero-sequence voltage component. The proposed predictive controller is directly formulated in the original $abc$ -framework to account for the common-mode voltage. In a conventional finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) formulation, active and reactive power control loops rely on the predictive controller, whereas the dc-bus voltage is usually governed by a PI-based control loop. This originates from fact that the dynamic equations for describing the predictions of these variables are heavily coupled. In this paper, a cascade-free FCS-MPC for single-phase grid-connected power converters is presented. The proposed control algorithm is formulated in terms of established dynamic references design, which was originally proposed to directly govern active and reactive power, and dc-voltage in three-phase power converters. In this paper, the dynamic reference design concept is extended to control single-phase grid-connected power converters. The proposed control algorithm does not use instantaneous ac-power calculations; instead, it directly formulates the optimal control problem on the grid-current in the original stationary reference frame. The experimental results obtained with a single-phase grid-connected neutral point clamped (NPC) converter confirm a successful design, where system constraints, e.g., maximum power and weighted switching frequency, are easily taken into account. A single-objective predictive control method that deals with four main control objectives applied to a multivariable single-phase three-level neutral-point-clamped converter operating as an active power filter is proposed in this paper. The four control objectives are to self-support the dc-bus voltage under load variations, to compensate the reactive power and the current harmonics, and to balance the dc capacitor voltages by using a predefined combination of the redundant switching states of the converter. The main contribution of the proposed method is that these objectives are accomplished without using weighting factors in the cost function, which eliminates problems such as multiobjective optimization or additional empirical procedures for determination of these factors. As a result, the method is easy to implement and rapidly selects the optimal voltage to improve the dynamic-state performance. Experimental results from a 2-kVA prototype are presented to prove that the method is valid for single-phase compensation. The well-known effect of model parameter errors' issue, which is inherent in predictive control methods, is also tested to confirm that the harmonic distortion in the grid current is below 5% even when the predictive model has a 25% error between actual and theoretically estimated grid impedance values. An active power filter implemented with a four-leg voltage-source inverter using a predictive control scheme is presented. The use of a four-leg voltage-source inverter allows the compensation of current harmonic components, as well as unbalanced current generated by single-phase nonlinear loads. A detailed yet simple mathematical model of the active power filter, including the effect of the equivalent power system impedance, is derived and used to design the predictive control algorithm. The compensation performance of the proposed active power filter and the associated control scheme under steady state and transient operating conditions is demonstrated through simulations and experimental results. Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are widely utilized in various applications, e.g. electric vehicles, microgrids, and data centres. However, the structure of multiple cell/module/pack BESSs causes a battery imbalance problem that severely affects BESS reliability, capacity utilization, and battery lifespan. The available balance schemes introduce extra equalizers and suffer from slow balance speed due to the equalizer limits. To tackle this issue, a modular reconfigurable BESS (MR-BESS) topology is introduced in this paper, for which a fast battery balance method is proposed. This combination provides reconfiguration flexibility and fault tolerance capability without the need for any extra components, such as equalizers. In this paper, a suitable long prediction horizon (multistep) model predictive control (MPC) formulation for cascaded H-bridge inverters is proposed. The MPC is formulated to include the full steady-state system information in terms of output current and output voltage references. Generally, basic single-step predictive controllers only track the current references. As a distinctive feature, the proposed MPC also tracks the control input references, which in this case is designed to minimize the common-mode voltage (CMV). This allows the controller to address both output current and CMV targets in a single optimization. To reduce the computational effort introduced by a long prediction horizon implementation, the proposed MPC formulation is transformed into an equivalent optimization problem that can be solved by a fast sphere decoding algorithm. Moreover, the benefits of including the control input references in the proposed formulation are analyzed based on this equivalent optimization problem. This analysis is key to understand how the proposed MPC formulation can handle both control targets. A novel control strategy for single-phase current-source inverters connected to an ac grid is proposed in this paper. The control strategy aims to inject maximum power to the grid under transient and steady-state conditions by the tracking of sinusoidal references. This paper presents the modeling and the design of the control strategy based on the exact linearization of the inverter model. Results are obtained by computational simulation and validated experimentally. By using error performance indexes in the analysis of the results, it is demonstrated that the proposed controllers achieve correct tracking of the sinusoidal reference while keeping a low switching frequency, which helps to minimize the commutation losses. This paper introduces a modulation method for the stacked multicell converters (SMCs). The proposed method is implemented using phase-disposition pulse width modulation and is capable of balancing and regulating the voltages of all the capacitors in the topology, i.e., the flying capacitors and the dc-link capacitors. The proposed method is also able to eliminate the low-frequency voltage ripples that may appear in the neutral point (NP) of SMCs. In SMCs with two stacks, the NP voltage level can be generated by direct connection of the output to the dc-link NP, but also using two extra states available. This redundancy is used to regulate the NP voltage. Furthermore, since the proposed method can eliminate the low-frequency voltage ripples in the capacitors, the capacitances of all the capacitors of the SMCs can be reduced, while maintaining high quality of the output voltages and currents. This enables the use of film capacitors. Simulation and experimental results are presented from a three-phase five-level $2\times 2$ SMC to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. In this paper, a model predictive control (MPC) based on optimal switching sequences (OSSs) for a single-phase grid-connected full-bridge neutral-point-clampled (NPC) power converter is presented. In this paper, the OSS concept is extended to control single-phase power converters. Z and quasi-Z-source inverters (Z/qZSI) have a nonlinear impedance network on their d c side, which allows the system to behave as a buck–boost converter in their outputs. The challenges derived from the qZSI topology include (a) the control of the voltage and current on its nonlinear impedance network, (b) the dynamic coupling between the a c and d c variables, and (c) the fact that a unique set of switches are used to manage the power at d c and a c side of the system. In this work, a control scheme that combines a PWM linear control strategy and a strategy based on finite control state model predictive control (FCS-MPC) is proposed. The linear approach works during steady state, while the FCS-MPC works during transient states, either in the start-up of the converter or during sudden reference changes. This work aims to show that the performance of this control proposal retains the best characteristics of both schemes, which allows it to achieve high-quality waveforms and error-free steady state, as well as a quick dynamic response during transients. Multilevel cascade H-bridge (CHB) converters are one of the promising solutions for medium- and large-scale grid-connected photovoltaic power plants. However, there is a lack of a complete study about their operation during voltage sags. This paper proposes a flexible control strategy for the operation of photovoltaic grid-connected CHB inverters during unbalanced voltage sags. The key novelty is that the proposed strategy is able to inject both active and reactive powers to the grid with either balanced or unbalanced currents, while ensuring that all dc-link capacitor voltages remain balanced. The simulation and experimental evaluations of a 9-kVA grid-connected seven-level CHB illustrate and validate the performance of the proposed strategy for the operation of the grid-connected CHB converter during different unbalanced voltage sags. This paper presents a model predictive switching pattern control (MPSPC) for a current-source converter (CSC), which achieves superb low-order harmonics elimination performance in steady state and improved transient responses. Based on a proposed space-vector-based selective harmonic elimination (SHE) method and prediction of load current at the next sampling instant, MPSPC prefers to following a precalculated SHE-pulse width modulation (PWM) pattern in steady state, and governing the CSC through a model predictive control (MPC) approach during transients. In comparison with existing schemes, the advantages of MPSPC are threefold: First, quantization error, introduced by a constant sampling frequency in MPC and degrading steady-state low-order harmonic elimination, is mitigated in the proposed scheme. Second, there is no weighting factor in the cost function, as used in existing schemes. Finally, MPSPC is totally realized based on one-step prediction, which simplifies the structure of the scheme. The proposed method is formulated in terms of 'modified global indicator' concept, which was originally proposed to improve reactive power sharing in ac MGs. In this work, the 'modified global indicator' concept is extended to coordinate dc MGs, which aims to preserve the main features offered by decentralised control methods such as no need of communication links, central controller or knowledge of the microgrid topology and parameters. This global indicator is inserted between current and voltage variables by adopting a virtual capacitor, which directly produces an output current sharing performance that is less relied on mismatches of the multi-bus network. Meanwhile, a voltage stabiliser is complementary developed to maintain output voltage magnitude at steady state through a shunt virtual resistance. The operation under multiple dc-buses is also included in order to enhance the applicability of the proposed controller. A detailed mathematical model including the effect of network mismatches is derived for analysis of the stability of the proposed controller. This letter proposes a phase-shifted pulse-width modulation (PS-PWM) technique for the flying capacitor (FC) multilevel converter that improves the quality of the line-to-line voltages. In traditional PS-PWM, the line-to-line voltages include intervals that switch between nonadjacent voltage levels, which deteriorates the harmonic performance. The proposed PS-PWM constantly achieves line-to-line voltages with switching transitions between two adjacent levels. The proposed modulation technique is implemented using two sets of $n$ evenly phase-shifted carriers that are alternatively applied depending on the instantaneous value of the reference signal of each phase-leg. Furthermore, it can be implemented in FC multilevel converters with any number of levels while maintaining natural capacitor voltage balance.
