The beach Zrće (island of Pag), often promoted as a Croatian Ibiza, is an example of the ambiguity in tourist representations. In the official brochures it is just "one of the many beaches" but from the owners' of the clubs point of view the beach is not a part of the island of Pag and Croatia. The beach Zrće at the entrance of the town of Novalja on the northern part of the island of Pag has been profiled over the years into the most popular centre of entertainment on Croatian coast, young tourist destination and centre of clubbing tourism. During the high season the beach hosts parties, concerts and festivals and is the most frequently visited beach in the Adriatic. Unlike Ibiza, the clubs and the bars are right on the beach – but the pebbles, the sea and the seashore for the visitors serve only as scenery. The representation of the beach as party mecca is autonomous from the town of Novalja, when represented on the web sites of beachclubs. In this paper we will analyze duality of representations of the beach Zrće as an internationally recognizable brand, and merely one of the local island beaches in the representations and promotions of local tourist boards. We are going to focus on the transformation of the town of Novalja, primarily location for family tourism, into the most touristic town of the island of Pag. In diachronic overview we will reconstruct the transformation of destination image and promotion of beach and nearby town from the 1980's until today. Our primary interest is an image shaping of town and mentioned beach and shift of attractiveness that has occurred in the recent years.

U radu se istražuju elementi budućnosti, utopijskih razmatranja o napretku čovječanstva, ženskog pitanja i izgled kulture u napretku u odabranim djelima Virginije Woolf. Utopijska se misao razmatra kroz njezin filozofsko-književni pristup stvaralaštvu. Vječne teme pacifizma i humanizma Virginia Woolf je provlačila kako kroz svoja fikcijska djela, tako i kroz eseje u kojima je progovarala o tada aktualnim društveno-političkim prilikama, a čitajući iz današnje perspektive i našeg iskustva proživljenog 20. stoljeća, mogu nam poslužiti kao vrelo iz kojega bismo mogli pronaći odgovor na krize kulture kojima svjedo- čimo posljednjih godina. U radu ćemo obraditi izabrane elemente u fikcijskim radovima: Gđa Dalloway, Orlando, Svjetionik, Valovi i izdvojit ćemo neke elemente i promišljanja u esejima: Tri gvineje, Vlastita soba, Obična čitateljica, Gospodin Bennet i gospođa Brown

The beach is a place of hedonism, refuge and escape from everyday life and a "cultural arena" (Löfgren 2002), where the changes of epochs can be traced. As one of the main topoi in the global tourism market, the beach has become a "global beach" with stereotypical images of landscape that may suit any location by the sea anywhere in the world. The town of Dubrovnik is the most important historic tourist centre of Croatia and their town’s beaches are an important segment of the tourist offer during the summer, but also a part of the culture of living, places of belonging and traditional sport contests that are of significance to the local urban community. An ever growing desire of present-day tourists to be actively involved in a local culture when at a particular tourist destination, in quest of experiencing a place in a unique way, faces the local community with a constant renegotiating of boundaries when representing the local identities and traditions. In this paper, ways of determining the boundaries between extending of tourist offer and preservation of local tradition are being examined on examples of oldest Dubrovnik's public beaches, their cultures, heritage and the local, traditional, sport contest in amateur water-polo, named Divlja liga (The Wild League).

Marija Jurić Zagorka (1873-1957) was the first croatian female journalist, author of many popular history and romance novels. Although her work was well received among female readers, the critics often put Zagorka in frames of trivial literature of less or no value. However in the last decades there is again a huge interest not only for her published books but also for her cultural, social, humanitarian and other activites. It is less or completely unknown that she is also an author of the first croatian science fiction and utopian novel, neglected for years. The novel is titled Red ocean (with clear asocciation to Russian revolution and reveals Zagorka's stand on social order) and it was published only as a part of the newspaper „Jutarnji list“ from 1918 until 1919, hundred years after publication of one of the earliest examples of science fiction novel in the world „Frankenstein: or The Modern Prometheus“ by Mary Shelley. The novel „Red ocean“ was never turned into a book and this research aims to help the revalorization of her body of work and her bold ideas about possible development of society through discourse analysis. Often utopias serve as a society satire and Zagorka, in order to avoid sanction or condemnation, decided to use this framework to expose her ideas on nationality, feminism, politics and other social and culture phenomenons.

Plaža Zrće, jedna od najljepših na otoku Pagu, transformirala se (kao i Novalja općenito) iz plažice odn. naselja za obiteljski turizam, u plažu koju svako ljeto „okupiraju“ mladi partijaneri i koja svojim sadržajem nudi sve pogodnosti za daljnji razvoj tzv. clubbing turizma.U špici sezone na plažu može stati i do nekoliko tisuća kupača.Ono što je vidljivo jest da je unazad deset godina broj stranih turista u Novalji porastao za čak 100.000 te da je infrastruktura kapacitetno nedostatna i neodgovarajuća za tu vrstu turizma. Kao alternativa, ili paralelno s postojećim oblicima turizma, mogao bi se razvijati i kulturni turizam, s obzirom da se kraj plaže Zrće nalazi plaža Caska na dnu koje je staro rimsko naselje Cissa i s arheološkim ostacima. Trenutačno je potencijal ovog naselja zanemaren i slabo prezentiran iako bi arheološki ostaci mogli biti zanimljivi turistima. Takav tip turizma bi možda više odgovaralo i lokalnom stanovništvu. Ujedno, postoje i drugi tipovi turizma kojima bi se Novalja mogla okrenuti kao npr.lječilišni i obiteljski (naspram zabavnog) što bi možda dugoročnije bilo bolje za lokalnu zajednicu. Trenutačnu situaciju u Novalji i plaži Zrće, autorice će analizirati kroz intervjue sturistima u Novalji, starosjediocima Novaljete ljudima koji posjeduju vikend kuće te već dugi niz godina ljetuju u Novalji.

Coffee house used to be the places for meeting with friends. In a broader sense, these places have represented „organized public spaces“ in a city providing place to meet, have a chat and spend some time with friends. In many cases, some coffee houses have been „institutions“ of urban life, a part of urban identity, memory and a “must place” to visit and see in a certain city. During several last decades, the role of coffee houses has changed – from identity places, from urban memories, from „institutions“ into (usually) crowded places, usually for short stay. Instead of live music that was accompanying social gatherings in the old coffee houses, music more like noise prevails in modern coffee places. It seems that noise- music is programmed in that way to prevent the customers of staying longer period of time. Due to many reasons, privatization of buildings and therefore also of the coffee houses, many of them that used to represent the identity of a certain urban milieu, are closed for many years. Examples include „Corso“, and „Medulić“ and „Gradska kavana“in Zagreb. This transformation of major roles of coffee houses – from the traditional ones to the modern ones – has changed also their major role as a suitable, comfortable, and a place where an extended part of a time could be spent. So, in a way, specific combination of private and public places had been represented by coffee houses. Today’s coffee places are usually for short stay, for „showing the other that I am also here“, and to see who is also present. The paper will discuss major changes of social functions of coffee houses now and in earlier times, trying to show whether the role of authentic, old fashioned, full of memories and identity places – coffee houses – will ever „come back“ and what will be their major social roles nowadays.

Borba i otpor prisutan je u radu Marije Jurić Zagorke na svim razinama. U njezinom novinarskom radu, književnim djelima i samome životu. Ona jest utjelovljenje otpora. U svome djelu “Crveni ocean” koji je izlazio u sklopu Jutarnjeg lista od 2. srpnja 1918. do 23. srpnja 1919., a ove je godine prvi put objavljen cjelovito, kao roman u dva toma, iznosi smjele ideje o kraju svih ratovanja, nadahnut izumima Nikole Tesle. Oktobarska je revolucija, pak, bila poticaj za zamišljanje pravednijeg društva, i u rodnom i u klasnom smislu. Te, 1918. godine u svijetu su djelovali James Joyce, Vladimir Majakovski, Bertolt Brecht, Luigi Pirandello, Tristan Tzara, Heinrich Mann. Iste je godine Oswald Sprengler objavio svoju knjigu “Propast Zapada”, a Hrvati su jurili kao “guske u magli.” Iako je napisan punih šest godina prije “metagenetičkog” romana Milana Šufflaya “Na Pacifiku 2255” i, zanimljivo, stotinu godina nakon “Frankensteina” Mary Shelley, još ćemo jednom analizirati satiričke, znanstveno - fantastič- ne i utopijske elemente Zagorkinog romana i odgonetnuti koliko korespondiraju s današnjim trenutkom i je li utopija krajnji pokušaj ljudskog otpora? Više od stotinu godina od početka Velikog rata koji je trebao stati na kraj svakom obliku ratovanja, iz ovog književnog predloška koji nam služi kao “najbogatiji izvor dokumentacije za sinkronijsku i dijakronijsku analizu ideja, poimanja i ponašanja ljudi “(Poyatos, 1988) pokušat ćemo iščitati zbilju onoga vremena i odgovoriti na pitanje kakva je naša današnja zbilja, je li se promijenio odnos prema želji o prestanku svakog ratovanja, u vrijeme kad se način ratovanja promijenio i mogućnost terorističkih napada dio je naše svakodnevice? Postoji li danas mogućnost za otpor i kakav bi on bio? Što nam utopija znači danas? U kojoj je mjeri moguća i je li ona tek puki “plan za društvo koje fukcionira mehanički” (Berneri, 1982) i može li se materijalizirati izvan fikcije u “političkoj i socijalnoj misli?”(Sargisson, 1996).

Plaža se određuje kao "liminalni prostor", "rubni prostor", "zona": geografski (granica mora i kopna), kulturološki (granice prirode i kulture ; poznatog i stranog ; odjevenog i golog tijela ; slobode i normi ponašanja), politički (pravo javnog pristupa i privatnog ograđivanja u svrhu komercijalizacije). Ona je popularno mjesto ispunjeno raznovrsnim značenjima, koje služi različitim potrebama i funkcijama raznolikom krugu ljudi. Plaža je stoga idealna za semiotička čitanja prostora i kulture. U mediteranskoj kulturi plaža postaje "dnevni boravak" lokalnog stanovništva, što su ulica i gradski trg dijelom izgubili. Na plažama se isprepliću življena svakodnevica, lokalne identifikacije, osjećaj familijarnosti i pripadnosti s turističkom imaginacijom bijega od svakodnevice, anonimnosti, dokolice i zadovoljstva. Dubrovačka kupališta i plaže vrlo su važan dio života, događanja i grupnih identiteta Dubrovčana. Pripadnost određenom kupalištu i sudjelovanje u događanjima i aktivnostima koji se na njima odvijaju dio su dubrovačke tradicije, društvenog sjećanja i reprezentiranja lokalne kulture. Cilj nam je sagledati teritorijalno ponašanje i s njime povezane kulturne prakse kroz analizu plaže kao javnog, sekundarnog ili čak primarnog teritorija, s posebnim osvrtom na tradicionalno amatersko vaterpolsko natjecanje dubrovačkih kupališta nazvano Divlja liga. Dubrovačko podrijetlo kao preduvjet sudjelovanja natjecanje čini iznimno lokalnim, a divljoligaška tradicija postala je važnim dijelom kolektivnog identiteta Dubrovnika i okolice. Divljoligaške utakmice na plažama ljeti, u vrijeme kada su preplavljene turistima, reprezentiraju lokalno zajedništvo, ali i vaterpolo kao "najdubrovačkiji" sport, "šestu dubrovačku tvrđavu". Raznolikost pogleda sudionika lokalnog vaterpolskog natjecanja, redovitih posjetitelja i turista na prostor gradskih plaža pruža uvid u slojevitost kulturnih i identitetskih praksi koje se na njima susreću.

The main aims of the study were: to explore the latent structure of the construct of hardiness at Croatian top basketball players and to gain an understanding of the relationship between obtained hardiness dimensions and situation-related efficacy in basketball. Situation efficacy of individual basketball players in top teams is linked to the constellation of a number of relevant anthropological and specific psychological features that influence the behavior of basketball players in stressful situations during training, and especially during basketball games. One of the most important psychological characteristics for the resistance of an individual to these kinds of stress is hardiness. In the research is used a Short Hardiness Scale (SHS), which is metrically adapted to the sample of Croatian top basketball players. The questionnaire was applied to a group of 107 top basketball players, independently in all nine A-1 Croatian basketball league teams. The correlations of the hardiness dimensions with the standard and derived parameters of basketball players’ situation efficacy are established, as well as with log variables. The analysis of instrument latent structure for hardiness measurement indicates the existence of two dimensions characteristic for the Croatian sample of top basketball players, which could be interpreted as a challenge and a control – commitment. A relatively small percentage of the explained variance (about 40%) suggests the possibility of defining the concept of hardiness specific for basketball situations. Low but statistically significant positive correlations were found between the dimension of control – commitment and a larger number of standard and derived parameters of situation efficacy. Statistically significant correlations between the dimension of challenge and the situation efficacy parameters or log variables are not found. This study has the main importance in cultural adjustment of hardiness to Croatian top basketball players, providing additional information about the relationship of hardiness and situation-related efficacy in basketball.

Rad sažima antropološko značenje različitih napitaka (fermentiranih napitaka i biljnih uvaraka) u prošlosti (i prapovijesti) sve do suverenih vremena. Oznaka "sveta pića" odnosi se ne toliko na pića ili napitke koji imaju religijsko značenje (iako je i to relevantno u radu), koliko na osobitost njihove uloge, tj. nije riječ o pićima koja imaju čisto prehrambeno značenje, nego o kulturno specifičnim pićima ili napitcima koji su povezani s različitim kulturno- i društveno- antropološkim dimenzijama. Poglavlja su posvećena "medu i mlijeku", "pivu", "vinu" i uvarcima od bilja, kavi i čaju (od čajevca).

The main objective of this study was to determine the correlation between the frequency of extreme estimations on Likert's scales in psychological measuring instruments and the parameters of situational efficacy at Croatian elite senior basketball players. The final sample of 74 players is selected from the initial sample of 107 senior male basketball players from the teams in A-1 Croatian basketball league championship in 2006/2007. The results revealed that the correlation between the number of extreme estimations of the certain instruments for measuring the conative characteristics and perceived team cohesion with the parameters of situational efficacy is not statistically significant. However, the size of canonical correlation and a number of statistically significant univariate correlations, indicate the importance of considering potential reasons for this correlation, such as controlled risk taking and taking responsibility for the success of the team.

Carlo Levi, an Italian Neo-realist writer, is most famous for his work Christ Stopped at Eboli (Cristo si è fermato a Eboli). He was banished to the indigent Italian South for political reasons and since then that deprived area formed part of his interest and gave rise to his research work and travelogue themes. Travelling on the margins of Italian society and history put him in a position inbetween those two worlds that can be found in the same state and a seemingly homogeneous culture and civilization. Levi researched the habits and the way of life of the "other" Italians and brought closer the tradition beyond the border and the image of the Southern land. The aim of his travelogue was to write a new history of the land that went alongside with the official Italian history but, at some time, was trapped in a prehistoric state thus giving rise to the title about Christ who never crossed the border of Eboli - the South itself.
