We propose a fitness measure quantifying multi-scale complexity for cellular automaton states, using compressibility as a proxy for complexity. The use of compressibility is grounded in the concept of Kolmogorov complexity, which defines the complexity of an object by the size of its smallest representation. With this fitness function, we explore the complexity range accessible to the well-known Flow Lenia cellular automaton, using image compression algorithms to assess state compressibility. Using a Genetic Algorithm to evolve Flow Lenia patterns, we conduct experiments with two primary objectives: 1) generating patterns of specific complexity levels, and 2) exploring the extrema of Flow Lenia's complexity domain. Evolved patterns reflect the complexity targets, with higher complexity targets yielding more intricate patterns, consistent with human perceptions of complexity. Strongly correlated electron materials are often characterized by competition and interplay of multiple quantum states. For example, in high-temperature cuprate superconductors unconventional superconductivity, spin- and charge-density wave orders coexist. A key question is whether competing states coexist on the atomic scale or if they segregate into distinct 'islands'. Using X-ray diffraction, we investigate the competition between charge order and superconductivity in the archetypal cuprate La(2-x)BaxCuO4, around the x = 1/8-doping, where uniaxial stress restores optimal 3D superconductivity at approximately 0.06 GPa. We find that the charge order peaks and the correlation length along the stripe are strongly reduced up to the critical stress, above which they stay constant. Simultaneously, the charge order onset temperature only shows a modest decrease. Our findings suggest that optimal 3D superconductivity is not linked to the absence of charge stripes but instead requires their arrangement into smaller 'islands'. Our results provide insight into the length scales over which the interplay between superconductivity and charge order takes place.

We have performed Compton scattering measurements on as-grown and reduced single crystals of the electron-doped T'-cuprate Pr1.3-xLa0.7CexCuO4 (x = 0.10) to investigate the effect of reduction annealing on the electronic state. The obtained results have revealed that the numbers of electrons in the O2p orbital in the Zhang-Rice singlet band, the Cu3dx2-y2 orbital, and the Cu3d3z2-r2 orbital are increased by reduction annealing. The increase in the number of Cu3d3z2-r2 electrons suggests the existence of Cu3d3z2-r2 holes in the as-grown single crystal. This is spectroscopic evidence of local hole doping into the Cu3d3z2-r2 orbital around the excess oxygen, as suggested by transport measurements [T. Adachi et al., J. Phys. Soc. The on-site Coulomb potential, U, and the covalent state of electronic orbitals play key roles for the Cooper pair symmetry and exotic electromagnetic properties of high-Tc superconducting cuprates. In this paper, we demonstrate a way to determine the value of U and present the whole picture of the covalent state of Cu spins in the mother system of the La-based high-Tc superconducting cuprate, La2CuO4, by combining the muon spin rotation ({\mu}SR) and the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. We reveal local deformations of the CuO6 octahedron followed by changes in Cu-spin distributions caused by the injected muon. We propose a novel system for action sequence planning based on a combination of affordance recognition and a neural forward model predicting the effects of affordance execution. By performing affordance recognition on predicted futures, we avoid reliance on explicit affordance effect definitions for multi-step planning. Because the system learns affordance effects from experience data, the system can foresee not just the canonical effects of an affordance, but also situation-specific side-effects. This allows the system to avoid planning failures due to such non-canonical effects, and makes it possible to exploit non-canonical effects for realising a given goal. We performed neutron powder diffraction measurements on the as-sintered (AS) and oxygen-reduced (OR) La$_{1.8}$Eu$_{0.2}$CuO$_{4+\alpha-\delta}$ (LECO). The structural parameters for oxygens in AS and OR samples refined by the Rietveld analysis are almost identical to those of the reference system, Pr$_{2}$CuO$_{4+\alpha-\delta}$. Thus, the two systems are comparable in terms of the structural changes in oxygens due to the annealing, although superconductivity appears only in LECO., Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, 1 table

In the past decade, the advent of time-resolved spectroscopic tools has provided a new ground to explore fundamental interactions in solids and to disentangle degrees of freedom whose coupling leads to broad structures in the frequency domain. Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) has been utilized to directly study the relaxation dynamics of a metal in the presence of electron-phonon coupling. The effect of photo-excitations on the real and imaginary part of the self-energy as well as the time scale associated with different recombination processes are discussed. In contrast to a theoretical model, the phonon energy does not set a clear scale governing quasiparticle dynamics, which is also different from the results observed in a superconducting material. These results point to the need for a more complete theoretical framework to understand electron-phonon interaction in a photo-excited state., Comment: 4 figures

Recently, hole-doped superconducting cuprates with the T'-structure La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4 (LESCO) have attracted a lot of attention. We have performed x-ray photoemission and absorption spectroscopy measurements on as-grown and reduced T0-LESCO. Results show that electrons and holes were doped by reduction annealing and Sr substitution, respectively. However, it is shown that the system remains on the electron-doped side of the Mott insulator or that the charge-transfer gap is collapsed in the parent compound., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures

We demonstrate the presence of ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations in the superconducting and non-superconducting heavily overdoped regimes of high-temperature superconducting copper oxides, using (Bi,Pb)_2_Sr_2_CuO_6+delta_ (Bi-2201) single crystals. Magnetization curves exhibit a tendency to be saturated in high magnetic fields at low temperatures in the heavily overdoped crystals, which is probably a precursor phenomenon of a FM transition at a lower temperature. Muon spin relaxation detects the enhancement of spin fluctuations at high temperatures below 200 K. Correspondingly, the ab-plane resistivity follows a 4/3 power law in a wide temperature range, which is characteristic of metals with two-dimensional FM fluctuations due to itinerant electrons. As the Wilson ratio evidences the enhancement of spin fluctuations with hole doping in the heavily overdoped regime, it is concluded that two-dimensional FM fluctuations reside in the heavily overdoped Bi-2201 cuprates, which is probably related to the decrease in the superconducting transition temperature in the heavily overdoped cuprates., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We report the first observation of superconductivity in heterostructure consisting of an insulating ferroelectric film (Ba$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$TiO$_3$) grown on an insulating parent compound of La$_2$CuO$_4$ with [001] orientation. The heterostructure was prepared by magnetron sputtering on a non-atomically-flat surface with inhomogeneities of the order of 1-2 nm. The measured superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ is about 30K. We have shown that superconductivity is confined near the interface region. Application of a weak magnetic field perpendicular to the interface leads to the appearance of the finite resistance. That confirms the quasi-two-dimensional nature of the superconductive state. The proposed concept promises ferroelectrically controlled interface superconductivity which offers the possibility of novel design of electronic devices., Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev. We have investigated the effects of magnetic Ni and nonmagnetic Zn impurities on the superconductivity in undoped T'-La$_{1.8}$Eu$_{0.2}$CuO$_4$ (T'-LECO) with the Nd$_2$CuO$_4$-type structure, using the polycrystalline bulk samples, to clarify the pairing symmetry. It has been found that both suppression rates of the superconducting transition temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$ by Ni and Zn impurities are nearly the same and are very similar to those in the optimally doped and overdoped regimes of hole-doped T-La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ with the K$_2$NiF$_4$-type structure. In order to investigate the relationship between the so-called stripe correlations and the high-Tc superconductivity, we have carried out magnetic susceptibility and zero-field muon-spin-relaxation measurements in partially Fe-substituted La2-xSrxCu1-yFeyO4 (LSCFO). It has been found that the Fe substitution induces successive magnetic transitions in the overdoped regime, namely, a spin-glass transition of Fe3+ spins due to the RKKY interaction based on itinerant spins at higher temperatures and a stripe-order transition of localized Cu2+ spins at lower temperatures. The stripe-order transition disappears at the hole concentration of ~0.28 per Cu which coincides with the endpoint of the superconductivity in pristine La2-xSrxCuO4, suggesting that the stripe correlations are closely related to the high-Tc superconductivity in the overdoped regime as well as in the underdoped regime. As for the spin-glass state, it has been found that the contribution of polarized itinerant spins to the muon-spin depolarization is not negligible. Taking into account neutron-scattering results by R.-H. He et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 127002 (2011)] that a spin-density-wave (SDW) order has been observed in overdoped LSCFO, the present results demonstrate the presence of a novel coexistent state of a SDW order and a spin-glass state., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is typically used to study only the occupied electronic band structure of a material. Here we use laser-based ARPES to observe a feature in bismuth-based superconductors that, in contrast, is related to the unoccupied states. Specifically, we observe a dispersive suppression of intensity cutting across the valence band, which, when compared with relativistic one-step calculations, can be traced to two final-state gaps in the bands 6 eV above the Fermi level. This finding opens up possibilities to bring the ultra-high momentum resolution of existing laser-ARPES instruments to the unoccupied electron states. For cases where the final-state gap is not the object of study, we find that its effects can be made to vanish under certain experimental conditions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Longitudinal-field muon-spin-relaxation measurements have revealed inhomogeneous distribution of the internal magnetic field at temperatures above the bulk superconducting (SC) transition temperature, $T_{\rm c}$, in slightly overdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{1-x}$Y$_x$Cu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$. The distribution width of the internal magnetic field, $\Delta$, evolves continuously with decreasing temperature toward $T_{\rm c}$. Thermal conductivity measurements in magnetic fields have been carried out for FeSe$_{0.3}$Te$_{0.7}$ single crystals as-grown and annealed at 400 {\degree}C for 100 h in vacuum ($\sim$ 10$^{-4}$ Pa). It has been found that the thermal conductivity in the {\it ab}-plane, {\kab}, of the annealed crystal shows an enhancement at low temperatures just below the superconducting transition temperature, {\tc}, owing to the thermal conductivity due to quasiparticles, while {\kab} of the as-grown crystal does not. This suggests that FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ is a strongly correlated electron system. It has also been found that both the degree of the enhancement of {\kab} just below {\tc} and the behavior of the suppression of {\kab} by the application of magnetic field for the annealed crystal depend on the thickness of the crystal. These results indicate that bulk superconductivity is absent in the as-grown crystal, appears only in the surface area in the annealed-thick crystal and appears in the almost whole region in the annealed-thin crystal. It has been concluded that the excess Fe included in the as-grown crystal is removed from the surface through the vacuum-annealing., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

We have investigated the suppression of the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, with an increase of the residual resistivity, \rho_0, through the substitution of M (M = Co, Ni, Zn) for Fe in Fe1-yMySe0.3Te0.7 single crystals, in order to clarify the symmetry of the superconducting gap in FeSe1-xTex. Small, large and very small suppression of Tc have been observed through the Co, Ni and Zn substitution, respectively. The magnitude of the suppression rate is hardly explained in terms of the pair-breaking effect due to potential scattering calculated based on the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory, even if errors in the estimation of the carrier concentration, effective mass and \rho_0 were taken into account. Accordingly, these results suggest that the superconducting symmetry is the s++-wave in FeSe1-xTex., Comment: 26 pages, 1 table, 7 figures

Single crystals of FeSe_1-x_Te_x_ (0.5=

Stage-2 MnCl$_{2}$ GIC magnetically behaves like a quasi 2D $XY$ antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice. It shows a typical spin glass behavior below the spin freezing temperature $T_{SG}$ (= 1.1 K). The AC magnetic susceptibility shows a peak at $T$ = $T_{SG}$ at $H$ = 0. This peak shifts to the low temperature side with increasing $H$, according to the de Almeida-Thouless critical line. We have undertaken an extensive study on the $T$ dependence of specific heat in the absence of an external field $H$ and in the presence of $H$ along the $c$ plane. The magnetic specific heat $C_{mag}$ at $H$ = 0 shows no anomaly at $T_{SG}$, but exhibits double broad peaks around 5 K and 41 K. The magnetic specific heat $C_{mag}$ at $H$ = 0 is described by $C_{mag} \propto (1/T^{2})\exp(-\Delta/T)$ with $\Delta = 1.41 \pm 0.03$ K, while $C_{mag}$ at $H$ = 10 kOe is proportional to $T$. The entropy due to the broad peak around 5 K is 1/3 of the total entropy. The residual entropy is 63 % of the total entropy because of highly frustrated nature of the system. The magnetic neutron scattering indicates that a short range spin order associated with the incommensurate wave vector $| {\bf Q}_{incomm}|$ ($= 0.522 \AA^{-1}$ at 0.45 K) appears below 5 K and remains unchanged down to 63 mK. The in-plane spin correlation length is only 18 $\AA$ at 0.45 K. The low temperature phase below $T_{SG}$ is a kind of reentrant spin glass phase where the spin glass phase coexists with a short range spin order associated with $| {\bf Q}_{incomm}|$., Comment: 14 pages, 20 figures

The electronic ground state in high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates where the superconducting state is suppressed by Ni substitution has been investigated in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Cu$_{1-y}$Ni$_y$O$_4$ from the specific heat and muon spin relaxation measurements. It has been found that the ground state changes from a magnetically ordered state with the strong hole-trapping by Ni to a metallic state with the Kondo effect of Ni with increasing hole-concentration. Moreover, the analysis of the results has revealed that a phase separation into the magnetically ordered phase and the metallic phase occurs around the boundary of two phases., Comment: 11pages, 4 figures

A central issue on high-Tc superconductivity is the nature of the normal-state gap (pseudogap) in the underdoped regime and its relationship with superconductivity. Despite persistent efforts, theoretical ideas for the pseudogap evolve around fluctuating superconductivity, competing order and spectral weight suppression due to many-body effects. Recently, while some experiments in the superconducting state indicate a distinction between the superconducting gap and pseudogap, others in the normal state, either by extrapolation from high-temperature data or directly from La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 (LBCO-1/8) at low temperature, suggest the ground-state pseudogap is a single gap of d-wave form. Here we report angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) data from LBCO-1/8, collected with improved experimental conditions, that reveal the ground-state pseudogap has a pronounced deviation from the simple d-wave form. It contains two distinct components: a d-wave component within an extended region around the node and the other abruptly enhanced close to the antinode, pointing to a dual nature of the pseudogap in this failed high-Tc superconductor which involves a possible precursor pairing energy scale around the node and another of different but unknown origin near the antinode., Comment: Nature Physics advance online publication, Dec. 21st 2008; Author's original version of the main text; for a better resolution of figures & Supplementary Information, visit Nature Physics' website

We have measured the thermal conductivity of the one-dimensional (1D) S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin system of Sr2Cu1-xPdxO3 single crystals including nonmagnetic impurities of Pd2+. It has been found that the mean free path of spinons along the 1D spin chain at low temperatures is very close to the average length of finite spin chains between spin defects estimated from the magnetic susceptibility measurements. This proves that the thermal conduction due to spinons at low temperatures in Sr2CuO3 is ballistic as theoretically expected [Zotos et al.: Phys. Rev. Lett. 55 (1997) 11029].

In order to investigate the inhomogeneity of the superconducting (SC) state in the overdoped high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates, we have measured the magnetic susceptibility, $\chi$, of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) single crystals in the overdoped regime in magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis up to 7 T on warming after zero-field cooling. It has been found for $x$ = 0.198 and 0.219 that the temperature dependence of $\chi$ in 1 T shows a plateau, that is, $\chi$ is almost independent of temperature in a moderate temperature-range in the SC state. Moreover, a so-called second peak in the magnetization curve has markedly appeared in these crystals. These results indicate an anomalous enhancement of the vortex pinning and strongly suggest the occurrence of a $microscopic$ phase separation into SC and normal-state regions in the overdoped high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
