1. Driving-Induced Symmetry Breaking in the Spin-Boson System

Abstract

A symmetric dissipative two-state system is asymptotically completely delocalized independent of the initial state. We show that driving-induced localization at long times can take place when both the bias and tunneling coupling energy are harmonically modulated. Dynamical symmetry breaking on average occurs when the driving frequencies are odd multiples of some reference frequency. This effect is universal, as it is independent of the dissipative mechanism. Possible candidates for an experimental observation are flux tunneling in the variable barrier rf SQUID and magnetization tunneling in magnetic molecular clusters., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to be published in PRL

Abstract

PURPOSE: This paper analyses the state, potentials and challenges of sustainable real estate in Nigeria.APPROACH: The impact of sustainability considerations in the real estate industry will be assessed based on the statistical analysis of Green Building Councils and the certifications of sustainable real estate globally and in Africa. Drivers for sustainable real estate and their relevance for the African context are identified also by Nigerian case studies and interviews with property developers and investors from West Africa. This leads to an analysis of the obstacles to the development and certification of sustainable real estate in Africa and ways to overcome them.FINDINGS: The research points to the awareness and pursuit of sustainability in real estate as a mark of professional excellence, a willingness to consider the long-term implications of real estate and available funds. This is increasingly the case in Nigeria, even if starting from a low level. The certification of properties is restricted by cost, absence of enabling policy framework or client demand and lack of adequate certification systems and organizations.RESEARCH LIMITATIONS: This paper is based on exploratory research that would need to be expanded to other countries.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The paper intends to contribute to the creation of an enabling environment for the creation and certification of sustainable real estate in Nigeria and Africa.ORIGINALITY: This contribution to the AfRES Annual Conference is based on analysis of current secondary data and primary sources.

Abstract

We present the implementation of a three-dimensional mapping routine for probing solid-liquid interfaces using frequency modulation atomic force microscopy. Our implementation enables fast and flexible data acquisition of up to 20 channels simultaneously. The acquired data can be directly synchronized with commercial atomic force microscope controllers, making our routine easily extendable for related techniques that require additional data channels, e.g., Kelvin probe force microscopy. Moreover, the closest approach of the tip to the sample is limited by a user-defined threshold, providing the possibility to prevent potential damage to the tip. The performance of our setup is demonstrated by visualizing the hydration structure above the calcite (10.4) surface in water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

15. Cytotoxicity of Metal and Semiconductor Nanoparticles Indicated by Cellular Micromotility

Abstract

In the growing field of nanotechnology, there is an urgent need to sensitively determine the toxicity of nanoparticles since many technical and medical applications are based on controlled exposure to particles, that is, as contrast agents or for drug delivery. Before the in vivoimplementation, in vitrocell experiments are required to achieve a detailed knowledge of toxicity and biodegradation as a function of the nanoparticles’ physical and chemical properties. In this study, we show that the micromotility of animal cells as monitored by electrical cell-substrate impedance analysis (ECIS) is highly suitable to quantify in vitrocytotoxicity of semiconductor quantum dots and gold nanorods. The method is validated by conventional cytotoxicity testing and accompanied by fluorescence and dark-field microscopy to visualize changes in the cytoskeleton integrity and to determine the location of the particles within the cell.
