This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and developing detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions. This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. These considerations will form the basis for a world-class experimental program that aims to increase our understanding of the fundamental structure of all visible matter.

Background: Adiponectin (ADPN) is a biologically active cytokine produced by adipose tissue. This protein exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antifibrotic, and insulin-sensitizing properties. As ADPN is primarily eliminated by the kidneys, it is a potential biomarker of chronic kidney disease progression. This study aimed to analyze the fluctuations in ADPN levels after kidney transplantation during a one-year follow-up and to compare them to significant renal (eGFR, NGAL) and metabolic (insulin, glucose, lipids, HOMA-IR) markers., Methods: Insulin, ADPN, NGAL, and basic biochemical parameters were evaluated in 51 healthy controls and 39 patients right before kidney transplantation and at five time points following transplantation (5-7 days, one month, three months, six months, and twelve months)., Results: Mean ADPN levels dropped significantly right after transplantation (from 35.449 to 30.920 μg/mL, p = 0.001) and decreased gradually over a year. From the third month after the transplantation, ADPN levels were comparable to healthy individuals. At the pre-transplant time point, ADPN correlated only with insulin (r = -0.60, p < 0.001) and HOMA-IR (r = -0.55, p < 0.001). At the timepoints after transplantation, ADPN correlated only with NGAL at three months (r = -0.70, p = 0.048). The correlation of ADPN with HOMA-IR found at pre-transplant was not significant at any post-transplant time point, but at one and three months after transplant, the correlations reached a borderline significance (p = 0.07 and p = 0.08, respectively)., Conclusions: Successful kidney transplantation is followed by a gradual and significant ADPN decrease. In pre- and post-transplant patients, ADPN is unrelated to kidney function defined by GFR, but to glucose metabolism. Most of the analyzed metabolic and kidney parameters, apart from NGAL, stabilize within three months after transplantation., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.)

Mo-Mo 2 N nanocomposite coating was produced by reactive magnetron sputtering of a molybdenum target, in the atmosphere, of Ar and N 2 gases. Coating was deposited on Ti6Al4V titanium alloy. Presented are the results of analysis of the XRD crystal structure, microscopic SEM, TEM and AFM analysis, measurements of hardness, Young's modulus, and adhesion. Coating consisted of α-Mo phase, constituting the matrix, and γ-Mo 2 N reinforcing phase, which had columnar structure. The size of crystallite phases averaged 20.4 nm for the Mo phase and 14.1 nm for the Mo 2 N phase. Increasing nitrogen flow rate leads to the fragmentation of the columnar grains and increased hardness from 22.3 GPa to 27.5 GPa. The resulting coating has a low Young's modulus of 230 GPa to 240 GPa. Measurements of hardness and Young's modulus were carried out using the nanoindentation method. Friction coefficient and tribological wear of the coatings were determined with a tribometer, using the multi-cycle oscillation method. Among tested coatings, the lowest friction coefficient was 0.3 and wear coefficient was 10 × 10 -16 m 3 /N∙m. In addition, this coating has an average surface roughness of RMS < 2.4 nm, determined using AFM tests, as well as a good adhesion to the substrate. The dominant wear mechanism of the Mo-Mo 2 N coatings was abrasive wear and wear by oxidation. The Mo-Mo 2 N coating produced in this work is a prospective material for the elements of machines and devices operating in dry friction conditions.

A very rare case of patient with locally advanced hypopharyngeal cancer with solitary, large peritoneal metastasis was presented. Diagnostic imaging excluded other organs metastases (lungs, liver, bones). At 62-old patient with advanced hypopharyngeal cancer (T4N2b) a dynamical nodal progression (within 1.5 months) without primary tumour progression was observed, and number of metastatic nodes was increased from 2 to 9. Simultaneously, a solitary peritoneal metastasis was detected and other metastases were excluded. Stage of disease was determined as T4N2cM1 and patient was qualified to palliative treatment.

The crystal structure of a left-handed Z-DNA hexamer duplex d(CGCGCG)(2) has been solved based on the anomalous diffraction signal of inherent P atoms using data collected at the single wavelength of 1.54 A. The anomalous signal of about 2% of the total diffracted intensity, constant for all nucleic acids, may be generally useful for solving crystal structures of DNA and RNA oligomers. The multiplicity of intensity measurements is shown to crucially affect the data quality and the ability to solve the phase problem. The anisotropic model refined to an R factor of 8.9% at 0.95 A resolution.

Minor nucleosides found in several eukaryotic initiator tRNASiMet, O-beta-D-ribofuranosyl(1"-->2')adenosine and -guanosine (Ar and Gr), as well as their pyrimidine analogues, were obtained from N-protected 3',5'-O-(1,1,3,3-tetraisopropyldisiloxane-1,3-diyl)ribonucle osides and 1-O-acetyl-2,3,5-tri-O-benzoyl-beta-D-ribofuranose in the presence of tin tetrachloride in 1,2-dichloroethane. A crystal structure has been solved for 2'-O-ribosyluridine. The 3'-phosphoramidites of protected 2'-O-ribosylribonucleosides were prepared as the reagents for 2'-O-ribofuranosyloligonucleotides synthesis. O-beta-D-Ribofuranosyl(1"-->2')adenylyl(3'-->5')guanosine (ArpG) was obtained and its structure was analysed by NMR spectroscopy.

Background: The beneficial effects of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors in the prevention of heart failure following myocardial infarction are widely accepted. However, the underlying mechanisms are still a matter of discussion. We therefore investigated the relative contribution of the breakdown of bradykinin and of the inhibition of angiotensin-II synthesis to the beneficial actions of ACE inhibitors in chronic heart failure following myocardial infarction., Methods: We compared the effects pretreatment with the ACE inhibitor moexipril with those of the type 1 angiotensin (AT1)-receptor antagonist losartan on structural and functional cardiac parameters after myocardial infarction in rats. In addition, the bradykinin B2-receptor antagonist icatabant was used to investigate the role of bradykinin in the cardioprotective effects of ACE inhibition. Rats underwent a sham operation or surgery to induce myocardial infarction. Treatment was started 1 week before myocardial infarction and continued for another 6 weeks after the procedure., Results: Moexipril reduced infarct size (100 +/- 9mm2 compared with 165 +/- 8mm2), the ratio of total heart weight to body weight (2.6 +/- 0.1 g/kg compared with 2.9 +/- 0.1 g/kg) and end-diastolic pressure (8.2 +/- 1.5 mmHg compared with 14.0 +/- 1.7 mmHg). All of these effects of the ACE inhibitor were blocked by concomitant treatment with icatibant. Losartan did not affect any of these cardiac parameters., Conclusion: The cardioprotective effects of the ACE inhibitor moexipril administered before myocardial infarction in the present study were a result of the reduced breakdown of kinins rather than of the reduced synthesis of angiotensin II.

X-ray analysis of the pancreatic hormone glucagon shows that in crystals the polypeptide adopts a mainly helical conformation, which is stabilised by hydrophobic interactions between molecules related by threefold symmetry. A model is presented in which the glucagon molecule exists in dilute solutions as an equilibrium population of conformers with little retention of conformers with little retention of structure, and in which the helical conformation is stablised by hydrophobic interactions either as an oligomer or as a complex with the receptor.

4-Ketocyclophosphamide (4-keto CP), C7H12Cl2N2O3P, monoclinic, P2(1), a = 11.909 (2), b = 10.254 (1), c = 9.873 (1) A, beta = 91.08 (1) degrees, V = 1205.45 (3) A3 Z = 4, Dc = 1.51 Mg-m-3, Cu K alpha, lambda = 1.54178 A, alpha 25 = +53.8 degrees (c = 3.0, MeOH), m.p. 107 degrees C, mu = 61.8 cm-1, F (000) = 564, R = 0.064 for 2961 observed reflexions with I greater than 1.96 sigma(I). Dextrarotatory enantiomer of 4-keto CP has S configuration at the stereogenic center. One of the two crystallographically independent molecules is disordered both in a six-membered ring and in --N(CH2CH2Cl)2 moiety. With the exception of a less populated conformer of a disordered molecule, 4-keto CP molecules adopt a conformation in which 1,3,2-oxazophosphorinane ring is in the sofa form with C(6) deviating from the plane through the remaining five ring atoms while an exocyclic N atom with its three substituents is nearly coplanar with the phosphoryl oxygen atom O(8). In a less populated conformer, the six membered ring takes the form of sofa with C(5) as a flap while an exocyclic N atom and its substituents are oriented toward the P--N(3) bond.

(--)Cyclophosphamide(1) crystallized from tetrachloromethane in the triclinic space group P1 with cell dimensions a = 10.500 (4) A, b = 10.490 (4) A, c = 10.761 (4) A, alpha = 110.0 (2) degrees, beta = 110.0 (2) degrees, gamma = 108.9 (2) degrees. Three molecules are contained in the unit cell. The X-ray analysis was based on diffractometer measurement of 2635 independent reflections and the structure was solved by Patterson and direct methods. The final R and Rw factors after full-matrix least-squares refinement are 0.0717 and 0.0677, respectively. The absolute configuration is S based on Hamilton's R-factor ratio test. The oxazaphosphorinane ring exists in a chair form with the bis-beta chloroethyl-amino group in equatorial position and about perpendicular to and bisecting the O--P--N plane. The structure is similar to that found in racemic 1 except a different conformation about one ethyl-amino N--C bond.
