Abstract

The global lockdown to mitigate COVID-19 pandemic health risks has altered human interactions with nature. Here, we report immediate impacts of changes in human activities on wildlife and environmental threats during the early lockdown months of 2020, based on 877 qualitative reports and 332 quantitative assessments from 89 different studies. Hundreds of reports of unusual species observations from around the world suggest that animals quickly responded to the reductions in human presence. However, negative effects of lockdown on conservation also emerged, as confinement resulted in some park officials being unable to perform conservation, restoration and enforcement tasks, resulting in local increases in illegal activities such as hunting. Overall, there is a complex mixture of positive and negative effects of the pandemic lockdown on nature, all of which have the potential to lead to cascading responses which in turn impact wildlife and nature conservation. While the net effect of the lockdown will need to be assessed over years as data becomes available and persistent effects emerge, immediate responses were detected across the world. Thus, initial qualitative and quantitative data arising from this serendipitous global quasi-experimental perturbation highlights the dual role that humans play in threatening and protecting species and ecosystems. Pathways to favorably tilt this delicate balance include reducing impacts and increasing conservation effectiveness.

38. Mobile Air Monitoring: Measuring Change in Air Quality in the City of Hamilton, 2005-2010

Abstract

This paper examines the change in air pollutant concentrations between 2005 and 2010 occurring in the City of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. After analysis of stationary air pollutant concentration data, we analyze mobile air pollutant concentration data. Air pollutants included in the analysis are CO, PM[subscript 2.5], SO[subscript 2], NO, NO[subscript 2], and NO[subscript X]. Stationary monitoring indicates a continuous reduction in air pollutant concentrations. Stationary monitors only cover a small spatial extent of Hamilton. Mobile monitoring of air pollutant concentrations, averaged over census tract boundaries, indicates both improvement and decline in air quality. These improvements and declines in air quality are spatially clustered throughout Hamilton. Mobile data indicated significant decline in median pollutant concentration for CO, SO[subscript 2], PM[subscript 2.5], and NO[subscript 2]; but significant increase for NO and NO[subscript X]. Air quality change in Hamilton is spatially heterogeneous, and is not captured based on the current stationary monitoring network. Coupling of mobile and stationary air pollutant concentration monitoring provides a more accurate spatial assessment of local air quality.

Abstract

Objective: Patient-provider communication is a major barrier to care, with some providers giving their personal phone number (PPN) to patients for increased accessibility. We investigated participant utilization of provider's PPN, its effect on participant satisfaction, provider's ability to predict abuse of this practice, and evolving provider perceptions. Study Design: Prospective, randomized study. Setting: Single institution, tertiary referral center. Methods: During a 2-week period, otolaryngology patients were randomized to either receive their provider's PPN or not. Providers predicted the likelihood of abuse. All calls/texts were documented for 4 weeks. At the study's conclusion, participants were surveyed using Press Ganey metrics. Providers were surveyed before and after to assess their likelihood of providing patients with their PPN and its impact on work demands. Results: Of the 507 participants enrolled, 266 were randomized to the phone number group (+PN). Of 44 calls/texts from 24 participants, 8 were considered inappropriate. Ten participants were predicted to abuse the PPN, but only one was accurately identified. Participants in the +PN group had a greater mean composite satisfaction score than the control group (4.8 vs 4.3; Welch's t -test, P <.0011). At the conclusion of the study, providers were more likely to share their PPN (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, P <.0313), and their perceived impact of this practice on workload was lower (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, P <.0469). Conclusion: This study demonstrates low patient utilization of provider PPNs, and poor provider predictive ability of patient abuse. Abstract

Objectives: Opioid analgesia has been integral in post-operative pain control for decades. The over-prescription of opioids, commonly in the surgical patient, has contributed to the current opioid epidemic. Liposomal bupivacaine (LB), a long-acting analgesia formulation, has demonstrated decreased post-operative pain and opioid requirements in patients treated across multiple surgical subspecialties. The aims of this retrospective study are to assess post-operative pain and opioid use in patients who received LB at the time of thyroidectomy. Methods: A cohort-matched retrospective review of patients who underwent thyroidectomy by 2 surgeons between January 2010 and December 2019 was performed. Patients were divided into those that received LB intraoperatively and those that did not. Statistical analyses were performed using the Chi-square or Fisher's exact test, and 2-sample T -test or Wilcoxon rank sum test. Results: Of the 201 patients included in this study, 113 patients received LB and 88 did not. Patients who received LB had a lower median visual analog scale (VAS) pain score (2 vs 3, P =.2252), lower maximum VAS pain score (6 vs 7, P =.0898), were less likely to require opioid medications (73.5% vs 85.2%, P =.0434), and had a lower percentage of daily morphine milligram equivalent value ≥45 (89.8% vs 95.3%, P =.1581) during the post-operative period when compared to those that did not. Conclusion: This study suggests a role for incisional infiltration with LB for post-operative pain management in patients undergoing transcervical thyroidectomy. 50. Effects of recreational rock climbing and environmental variation on a sandstone cliff-face lichen community

Abstract

Lichen community composition was evaluated for both lichen cover and richness on a cliff face commonly used for recreational rock climbing. The sandstone outcrop is located on the Sibley Peninsula, which extends from the north shore of Lake Superior. One-hundred and twenty plots were examined. Each plot was 1 [m.sup.2] in size, with 60 plots located on unclimbed cliff sections and 60 more located where recreational rock climbing regularly occurs. Lichen richness and cover were significantly lower on the rock climbing sections compared with unclimbed sections. Linear regression models indicated significant relationships with cover and richness to environmental response variables and climbing treatment. Detrended correspondence analysis indicated a separation of lichen community groups on this cliff, and major separations occurred between plots in each climbing treatment. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated a significant amount of community group variation between climbed and unclimbed locations related to climbing treatment and aspect of the plots. Les auteurs ont evalue la composition des communautes licheniques, a la fois pour la couverture et pour la richesse en lichens, sur la face d'une falaise souvent utilisee pour l'escalade recreative de rochers. L'affleurement de gres se retrouve sur la peninsule de Sibley, laquelle s'etend a partir de la rive nord du lac Superieur. Les auteurs ont examine 120 parcelles. Les parcelles etaient chacune d' un metre carre, 60 parcelles etant localisees sur des portions de la falaise non escaladees et 60 autres la ou il y a une utilisation frequente pour l'escalade recreative. On observe une reduction significative de la richesse et de la couverture en lichens dans les sections escaladees comparativement aux sections temoins. Les modeles de regression lineaire indiquent des relations significatives avec la couverture et la richesse, en reaction aux variables environnementales et l'activite d'escalade. L'analyse des correspondances hors tendance (detrended) indique une separation des groupes de communautes de lichens sur cette falaise, les separations majeures se retrouvant entre les parcelles dans chaque traitement avec escalade. L'analyse par correspondances canoniques indique une quantite significative de variation des groupes de communautes entre les localisations escaladees et non escaladees reliee au traitement escalade, et l' aspect des parcelles.
