In this paper, the authors propose a new design methodology for legged walking robots with dynamic characteristics suitable for walking motions by applying the unique properties of Passive Dynamic Walking as design criteria. The authors have identified the 'adaptive behaviour', in which the passive dynamic walking robot automatically adjusts its gait to keep walking in response to variations in physical parameters, such as the slope angle or mass, that constitute its mechanics. Furthermore, the authors discovered that this adaptive behaviour enables the transition of the structure and degrees of freedom of the passive dynamic walking robot to different mechanical systems through the application of 'interconnections among different dynamics'. Background: Adaptive behaviour refers to the practical skills necessary for independence and is considered a high‐priority intervention target for children with neurogenetic conditions associated with intellectual disability, like Down syndrome (DS). Daily living skills (DLS) are a critical aspect of adaptive behaviour, but they have received little intervention attention, possibly because they involve a wide variety of skills across many settings. The present study aimed to advance DLS intervention science by examining the concurrent and longitudinal association between DLS performances and a cognitive skillset hypothesised to support DLS skill acquisition, executive function (EF). Methods: Participants were 71 children with DS between the ages of 2.5 and 8.7 years (M = 5.23 years; standard deviation = 1.65) who completed a battery of adapted EF tasks and a primary caregiver who completed the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales 3rd Edition Parent/Caregiver Comprehensive Report Form. A subset of caregivers also provided 6‐ and 12‐month follow‐up adaptive behaviour information. Results: Results demonstrated a positive association between EF task performance and DLS standard scores and v‐scores both concurrently and longitudinally. Research on thermal comfort has revealed various adaptive behaviours in a hostel room, such as changing clothing, use of windows, doors, and ceiling fans. Hostel rooms are used for various activities and are typically furnished with a wardrobe, bed, study table, and chair. Recent studies indicate that ceiling fan fixed at the centre of the room may not provide adequate air velocity for different activities occurring in different parts of a room. Although students generally arrange furniture based on their preferences and room geometry, the influence of fan-induced air on furniture layout to improve thermal comfort is yet to be established. In this context, this study investigates spatial adaptation and identifies the factors affecting furniture layout preferences in hostel rooms. In a yearlong study, patterns of furniture layout were observed in twenty-one naturally ventilated hostel buildings to find their relationship with environmental and non-environmental factors. A total of 1665 observation data was collected from single, double, and triple occupancy rooms. Influence of various factors on arranging the furniture was identified through a questionnaire survey. Throughout the survey, outdoor temperature varied between 23 and 41 °C and outdoor relative humidity varied between 32.3 % and 97.5 %. The spatial arrangement of furniture was evaluated against fan location. Results indicate that fan location and indoor temperature significantly influence the furniture arrangement. A logistic regression equation was developed to evaluate the trigger temperature when students began moving furniture towards ceiling fan. In a single occupancy room, above 34.2 °C, the probability of moving the bed towards the fan was found to be maximum. In single and double occupancy rooms, students move the bed near the ceiling fan predominantly during night-time to get sufficient air movement. A cautious design of furniture layout and adding a personalised fan for various activities may improve the thermal comfort in hostel rooms.

Integrated risk management requires all stakeholders to work together proactively. Residents of floodplains can participate by implementing property-level adaptive measures. Risk communication materials can motivate those households to do so. Research on these materials is limited. Therefore, we systematically assessed freely available German risk communication materials in terms of their recommendations and how their content aligns with behavioural theories. We compare these results with data from surveyed households affected by urban flooding (N = 1,352) on their attitudes towards flood adaptation and the adaptation measures implemented. 209 risk communication materials were reviewed. Adaptation options (mostly evasion or resistance strategies) were communicated in 93%, the hazard itself in 78%, the local hazard situation in 48%, and responsibilities in risk management in 54% of the risk communication materials. These aspects were rarely broken down for the reader by, for example, presenting the damage that can be expected or by presenting measures with the expected costs or their response efficacy. However, these details commonly increase the adaptive behaviour of residents according to commonly used behavioural theories. Survey data indicated that households feel able (82%) and responsible (41%) for implementing adaptive measures. However, many households indicated that measures are not effective (41%), too expensive (34%), and that there are not enough support programs (87%). We recommend that future risk communication materials focus more on communicating the efficacy and costs of adaptive measures and highlight funding opportunities. Purpose: While research indicates that both the core features of autism and associated developmental skills influence adaptive behaviour outcomes, results to date suggest greater influence of the latter than the former, and little attention has been given to how the interaction of both together might impact functional disability. Seeking to expand understanding of associations between young children's core social autism features, developmental skills, and functional ability/disability, we specifically tested whether early developmental skills might have a moderating effect on the association between early social features and subsequent functional disability. Methods: Data from 162 preschool children were available for this study. These included time-1 measures of social autism features (ADOS-Social Affect score) and developmental skills (MSEL-Developmental Quotient; DQ), and a measure of functional ability/disability (VABS-Adaptive Behaviour Composite; ABC) available at follow-up 1-year later (time-2). Results: Time-1 ADOS-SA and MSEL-DQ scores were concurrently associated with one another, and both prospectively associated with time-2 VABS-ABC scores. Examination of partial correlations (i.e., controlling for MSEL-DQ) demonstrated that the association of time-1 ADOS-SA and time-2 VABS-ABC was accounted for by shared variance with DQ. Formal moderation analysis returned a non-significant overall interaction term, but showed a lower-bound region of significance whereby the association of time-1 ADOS-SA with time-2 VABS-ABC was significant for children with baseline DQ ≤ 48.33. Conclusion: Our results add to a body of empirical evidence consistent with an understanding of the needs of and resources available to autistic people through a 'cognitive compensation' lens. Adaptive behaviour is crucial for well‐being and independence. The Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System (ABAS‐3) is often used to plan individualised support in specialist educational settings, drawing on both teacher and parent informants. In practice, however, little is known about the extent of variation between informants. We examined informant discrepancies in a naturally occurring dataset of 28 ABAS‐3 assessments (21 male, seven female), performed by teachers and by parents post‐admission at an autism specialist school. We found that in real‐life practice, teachers rated the adaptive functioning capabilities of their students significantly more highly than parents across all ABAS‐3 domains, a discrepancy significantly greater than validation studies with this instrument, and interestingly, non‐uniform across domains. The magnitude of this discrepancy was largest in the Conceptual domain, where differences between informants were greater in older children. The skill area most affected was ‘self‐direction’, which includes aspects of executive function. Existing guidance for adaptive functioning assessment in specialist education is extremely limited; while considering potential sources of informant discrepancy, our findings corroborate the need for further guidance on the use and scope of tools like the ABAS‐3 in educational settings. While such discrepancies may confound population‐level data, individually, these skills may be indicative of greater need to support generalisation across contexts, and may indicate the particular skill areas that are most amenable to intervention. Inhibition and Working Memory (WM) are crucial predictors of everyday life autonomies in people with Down Syndrome (DS). We aimed to investigate the possible relationship between different levels of autonomy, inhibitory sub-components and WM in people with DS. Twenty-two adolescents and adults with DS were enrolled in the study and were assessed with tasks tapping on response inhibition, interference suppression and WM. With a questionnaire on levels of autonomy, educators evaluated the sample with DS. Considering levels of autonomy, we divided participants into two groups: one with lower levels of autonomy and one with medium-to-high levels of autonomy. Results showed differences between the two groups in WM tasks and both inhibitory dimensions. More specifically, interference suppression seems to have a major role in the acquisition of important, more structured aspects of autonomy such as shopping, behaviour on the road, communication and reading-writing skills. On the other hand, response inhibition seems to be linked to crucial aspects of learning, such as reading and writing and handling a telephone. Intellectual disability is a serious lifelong disability that places heavy demands on society and the health system. The study was designed to determine the extent to which the intellectually challenged children are capable of improving their cognitive abilities as well as adaptive functioning through the Montessori Sensorial Training program when introduced in a different setting (i.e. special education school system). With randomised control trial (RCT) of pre-and post-testing, 30 children with mild intellectual disabilities were randomly allocated to Montessori Sensorial Training intervention condition (n = 15) and waitlist control condition (n = 15). The intervention group showed significant improvement in cognitive abilities (i.e. classification, seriation, recognition, ordination, and visual and auditory discrimination) as compared to the control group at post-assessment. Children who received training also showed improvement in communication and self-care domain as compared to the control group. This study provides evidence that Montessori Sensorial Training is not only effective for children going to mainstream schools but also for children with intellectual disabilities. Despite some limitations, the results of the study are encouraging and suggesting that Montessori Sensorial Training is an effective intervention to facilitate self-based learning, independence, and decision-making skills in children with mild intellectual disabilities. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefits of educational and recreational camping programs for children with epilepsy. Method: A retrospective review of data collected from all children attending annual epilepsy camps organized by the Croatian Epilepsy Association and the Zagreb City Office for Health during 8 years was performed. Children included were between 6 and 18 years of age. The staff of the camp includes child neurologists, a psychologist, neurology nurses and trained volunteers. Educational activities are designed to improve children's knowledge of epilepsy, importance of taking medication, academic choices, suggested employment, and regulations regarding driving laws. These issues were discussed in groups or in single sessions, depending on the case. Other activities included supervised swimming, team sports, fun activities and games, arts and crafts and entertainment such as disco or movie night. Each of the participants filled out three questionnaires 1. General data questionnaire and pre-camp knowledge test; 2. Camp satisfaction questionnaire and post-camp knowledge test; 3. Questionnaire on adaptation to epilepsy in young people. Results: The analyses of surveys and tests showed that only 75% of children in camp knew that they had epilepsy. In 10% of children, friends and distant family members did not know about epilepsy. Comparing the knowledge test before and after the camp, the average percentage of correctly solved tasks on the first test is 65%, and on the second 87%. The answers in the questionnaire on adaptation to life with epilepsy are indicators of strong stigma in children with epilepsy. Conclusions: The main accomplishment of the camp was for children to gain confidence that they can reach their full potential in life and to feel equal to their peers in every aspect of life. Current literature mainly focuses on adaptive profiles from a categorical perspective but yields inconclusive results. The present study puts a transdiagnostic approach next to a "classical" categorical approach. In this study, 222 children (5–18 years old) with autism and/or intellectual disability participated. Variance analyses, based on standard scores from ABAS-3 at group-level, were conducted in order to compare adaptive domains within categories. A K-Means cluster analysis was used to delineate empirically derived clusters with a similar profile of difference scores at an individual level. Chi-square tests and variance analyses were used to investigate the distribution of variables across clusters. From a categorical perspective, results were in line with current literature. A transdiagnostic perspective revealed three adaptive profiles (Homogeneous, Social, and Practical). No perfect match was found between specific adaptive profiles and diagnostic categories. Humans lived as hunter‐gatherers for more than 95% of our evolutionary history, thus studying contemporary hunter‐gatherer populations offers insight into the conditions children may be psychologically adapted to. Here, we contrast hunter‐gatherer childhoods with those of WEIRD (Western Educated Industrialised Rich Democratic) societies and consider the implications for children's mental health. Hunter‐gatherer infants receive continuous physical contact and more sensitive and responsive caregiving than is typical of WEIRD societies, due to the extensive involvement of alloparents (non‐parental caregivers) who generally provide 40–50% of their care. Alongside positive attachment outcomes, alloparenting likely reduces the harms of family adversity and risk of abuse/neglect. From late infancy, hunter‐gatherers spend their time in mixed‐age 'playgroups' where they learn via active play and exploration without adult supervision. This contrasts with WEIRD norms surrounding the need for adult supervision of children, as well as with the passive teacher‐led classrooms, which could potentially lead to suboptimal learning outcomes and pose difficulties to children with ADHD. Based on this preliminary comparison, we consider practical solutions to potential harms arising from discordance between what children are adapted to and exposed to. Challenges in conceptualising resilience have impeded advancements in resilience science. In response, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) developed a general framework for harmonising the conceptualisation of resilience as a dynamic process determined by multiple systems and levels of analysis. Consistent with the NIH Resilience Framework, this paper presents a conceptual model of resilience applied to military service members. This model encompasses four core components necessary for resilience research: (1) the presence of significant challenge, (2) successful adaptation in response to the challenge, (3) the capacity for resilience (i.e., protective factors), and (4) the processes (i.e., mechanisms) by which protective factors exert positive effects on an individual's response. Guided by this conceptual model, we outline key methodological recommendations to advance resilience research and illustrate each using the Advancing Research on Mechanisms of Resilience study as an exemplar. We emphasise the need for future research to examine resilience as a dynamic process and apply a multilevel approach. We hope to provide a basic road map to those interested in improving the rigour of future research on resilience in a military context, the results of which can inform the development of interventions. Background: The purpose of this study was to explore the role of everyday executive functions in relation to intelligence and adaptive behaviour in children and adolescents with mild intellectual disability. Method: A group of children and adolescents, previously diagnosed with mild intellectual disability were assessed according to intelligence, everyday executive functions and adaptive behaviour. The association between everyday executive functions and intelligence was examined, and it was explored whether intelligence or everyday executive functions would best predict adaptive behaviour. Results: Adaptive behaviour was significantly predicted by executive functions, but not by intelligence. Nor was intelligence significantly related to everyday executive functions in this group. Conclusions: Although fundamental in diagnosing intellectual disability, intelligence cannot predict adaptive behaviour. Assessing everyday executive functions and adaptive behaviour, as well as acknowledging the strong association between them, provides valuable information in the process of optimizing developmental support for children and adolescents with mild intellectual disability. Mucolipidosis type II (MLII), an ultra-rare lysosomal storage disorder, manifests as a fatal multi-systemic disease. Mental inhibition and progressive neurodegeneration are commonly reported disease manifestations. Nevertheless, longitudinal data on neurocognitive testing and neuroimaging lack in current literature. This study aimed to provide details on central nervous system manifestations in MLII. All MLII patients with at least one standardized developmental assessment performed between 2005 and 2022 were included by retrospective chart review. A multiple mixed linear regression model was applied. Eleven patients with a median age of 34.0 months (range 1.6–159.6) underwent 32 neurocognitive and 28 adaptive behaviour assessments as well as 14 brain magnetic resonance imagings. The scales used were mainly BSID-III (42%) and VABS-II (47%). Neurocognitive testing (per patient: mean 2.9, standard deviation (SD) 2.0) performed over 0–52.1 months (median 12.1) revealed profound impairment with a mean developmental quotient of 36.7% (SD 20.4) at last assessment. The patients showed sustained development; on average, they gained 0.28 age-equivalent score points per month (confidence interval 0.17–0.38). Apart from common (63%) cervical spinal stenosis, neuroimaging revealed unspecific, non-progressive abnormalities (i.e., mild brain atrophy, white matter lesions). In summary, MLII is associated with profound developmental impairment, but not with neurodegeneration and neurocognitive decline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermal adaptation in low-income housing of Mumbai, India is investigated using a longitudinal field study and in-situ field measurements. 705 set of responses from two different neighbourhoods were analysed to understand the patterns of behavioural adaptation. Spatial configuration, temporal factors and underlying societal norms influenced the comfort-related behaviour in low-income housing. Clothing adaptation was primarily governed by the gendered socio-cultural practice of purdah system and western influences rather than thermal needs. Logistic regression predicts probabilities of 88% and 20% for using ceiling fans and exhaust fans respectively at 80% indoor air relative humidity. However, thermal stimuli cannot predict occupant behaviour well due to presence of non-thermal determinants. Security, privacy, environmental nuisances (dust, noise and odour) and insects or animals menace (mosquitoes, monkeys, rats, lizards) were the major barriers to thermal adaptation. The study is helpful in evaluating the influence of occupant behaviour on building performance and thus to inform building design and operation. The policy implications could be through the development of design guidelines for the housing schemes to create thermally comfortable low-income dwellings.

BackgroundMeasures of general cognitive and adaptive ability in adults with Down syndrome (DS) used by previous studies vary substantially. This review summarises the different ability measures used previously, focusing on tests of intelligence quotient (IQ) and adaptive behaviour (AB), and where possible examines floor effects and differences between DS subpopulations. We aimed to use information regarding existing measures to provide recommendations for individual researchers and the DS research community.ResultsNineteen studies reporting IQ test data met inclusion for this review, with 17 different IQ tests used. Twelve of these IQ tests were used in only one study while five were used in two different studies. Eleven studies reporting AB test data met inclusion for this review, with seven different AB tests used. The only AB scales to be used by more than one study were the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scale (VABS; used by three studies) and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale 2nd Edition (VABS-II; used by two studies). A variety of additional factors were identified which make comparison of test scores between studies problematic, including different score types provided between studies (e.g. raw scores compared to age-equivalent scores) and different participant inclusion criteria (e.g. whether individuals with cognitive decline were excluded). Floor effects were common for IQ tests (particularly for standardised test scores). Data exists to suggest that floor effects may be minimised by the use of raw test scores rather than standardised test scores. Raw scores may, therefore, be particularly useful in longitudinal studies to track change in cognitive ability over time.ConclusionsStudies assessing general ability in adults with DS are likely to benefit from the use of both IQ and AB scales. The DS research community may benefit from the development of reporting standards for IQ and AB data, and from the sharing of raw study data enabling further in-depth investigation of issues highlighted by this review.

Facial expressions are evolutionarily acquired social signals that are processed rapidly by the receiver when deciding to either approach or avoid the person sending the signal. The predominance of the approach or avoidance responses has been examined for various facial expressions. Similar to facial expressions, the approach‐avoidance response to affective voice may have been acquired evolutionarily. However, studies examining approach‐avoidance to an affective voice are limited. This study used the approach‐avoidance task framework developed for facial expressions to determine the dominant behavioural responses to affective voices that indicate either happiness or anger. The results show that the approach response was dominant for the happy voice, while the avoidance response was dominant for the angry voice. This tendency was observed even without the presence of any facial stimuli. These results suggest that an affective voice may be an evolutionarily acquired approach‐avoidance‐inducing social signal, similar to facial expressions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the survey data of 414 large grain farmers in 11 counties and cities in Poyang Lake District of Jiangxi Province, this paper used structural equation modelling (SEM) and hierarchical regression method to explore the relationship between risk perception, information acquisition, human capital and meteorological disaster adaptive behaviour of large grain farmers. This paper focuses on the mediating role of information acquisition in risk perception and adaptive behaviour and the moderating role of human capital in information acquisition and adaptive behaviour. The results show that the risk perception of large grain farmers has a significant positive effect on their information acquisition and adaptive behaviour. Information acquisition ability of large grain farmers has a significant positive effect on their adaptive behaviour, and there exists a mediating effect between risk perception and adaptive behaviour; the human capital of large grain farmers does not play a moderating role in the impact of risk perception on information acquisition, yet has a significant positive moderating effect on the impact of information acquisition on adaptive behaviour. The results reveal the mechanism of meteorological disaster adaptive behaviour of large grain farmers and its influencing factors, which can be used as a reference for the government to make relevant policies. Introduction. Parenting during the COVID-19 pandemic is a challenge that needs to be addressed. Behaviour change as a result of restrictions requires that children and parents must adapt. For this reason, a parenting model is needed so that the process of behavioural education in children by parents continues and is able to be adapted by children. Objective. This research was conducted to find a parenting model during a pandemic so that children are adaptive in playing, learning, doing PHBS and conducting social interactions. Methods This study was an exploratory and experimental study with subjects of parents and children with a control group of 60 and treatment of 63. This research was conducted in Denpasar, Gianyar and Klungkung. The data were analysed by t-test. Result. The results of the analysis showed that there were differences in parenting abilities in mothers who were educated with digital modules with p = 0.00. Digital parenting in mothers has a good influence on children's adaptation in playing p=0.00, in learning 0.00 and socialization p= 0.006, but not significantly to PHBS p= 0.177 at p (

Longhorn beetles are often categorized as diurnal, crepuscular or nocturnal depending on the diel (day-night) time window at which adults are active. A precise knowledge of the diel activity pattern in these species is essential to understand the selective forces involved in, and the adaptations resulting from, the evolution of circadian rhythms. The genus Cerambyx includes both diurnal and crepuscular/nocturnal species. In the case of Cerambyx miles Bonelli, 1812, a usually scarce and localised species, diel activity remains poorly understood. While for some authors this longhorn is diurnal, for others it is crepuscular/nocturnal. In order to resolve this historical discrepancy, we studied the diel activity of C. miles in the wild in 2020 and 2021 using ad hoc devised phototraps (with and without capture) and we examine to what extent our field results conformed to literature. Our data (n = 139 captures/sightings) show that about 94% of the activity of C. miles is diurnal, 5% crepuscular, and less than 1% nocturnal. Diel activity started at dawn, raised progressively during the morning, peaked in the late afternoon (17.00-20.00 h) and declined abruptly just before dusk. Our field results were not consistent with literature data (n = 103 diel activity records retrieved from 79 references), in which diel activity was scored as 60% diurnal, 26% crepuscular and 14% nocturnal. We argue possible causes involved in the literature bias and we discuss the diel activity of C. miles from a behavioural, ecological and evolutionary perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Orientation: Faced with high contextual dynamics, organisational leaders are looking to resilience as a resource to help their employees manage their well-being as they adapt to the changes. Appreciating the complementary resource streams that help employees adapt or transform the context is an urgent priority. Research purpose: Drawing on the conservation of resources theory, the study evaluated the moderating role of political skill in the relationship between work engagement and resilience at work. Motivation for the study: The quality of the employees' personal and social resources at work could explain the degree to which they move beyond mere adaptation to thriving. Research approach/design and methods: The data collected from a convenient sample of over 200 individuals were used to construct a hierarchical multiple regression model. Main findings: There was a significant association between work engagement and resilience at work. The interaction term between work engagement and political skill accounted for a significant proportion of the variance in resilience at work. Practical/managerial implications: The result suggests that work engagement and political skill act in an integrative way to replenish adaptive resources at work. We developed a mechanism model which allows for simulating the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) transmission dynamics with the combined effects of human adaptive behaviours and vaccination, aiming at predicting the end time of COVID-19 infection in global scale. Based on the surveillance information (reported cases and vaccination data) between 22 January 2020 and 18 July 2022, we validated the model by Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) fitting method. We found that (1) if without adaptive behaviours, the epidemic could sweep the world in 2022 and 2023, causing 3.098 billion of human infections, which is 5.39 times of current number; (2) 645 million people could be avoided from infection due to vaccination; and (3) in current scenarios of protective behaviours and vaccination, infection cases would increase slowly, levelling off around 2023, and it would end completely in June 2025, causing 1.024 billion infections, with 12.5 million death. Adaptive behaviour is defined as a set of conceptual, social and practical skills that are learned and used in everyday life. Assessment of adaptive behaviour is an indispensable part in the identification and classification of intellectual disabilities, but also an important indicator of the development of children with other developmental disorders and children of typical development. The sample was divided into three groups: children with specific language impairment (SLI), children with mild intellectual disability (MID) and children with typical development (TD). The Adaptive Behaviour Diagnostic Scale (ABDS; Pearson, Patton, Mruzek 2016) was used to assess adaptive skills. The objectives of the study were to compare the levels of mastery of adaptive skills in children with SLI, MID and TD children, as well as to examine the impact of each of the individual domains (conceptual, social and practical) on the overall score of adaptive behaviour. The research results showed that children with SLI and MID have significantly poorer achievements compared to TD children. However, although children with SLI have poor performance, the results showed that adaptive skills of these children are significantly better compared to children with MID. Regresion analysis showed that conceptual skills are the best predictor of adaptive behaviour in TD children, while social skills are the best predictor of adaptive behaviour in both children with SLI and children with MID.

La Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scale 2 (VABS-2) est une échelle principalement connue pour décrire le comportement adaptatif de sujets autistes. Elle a également un rôle de critère de jugement dans la recherche interventionnelle, et ce, dans le but de mesurer l'effet d'une intervention sur la symptomatologie autistique. Nous avons réalisé une revue de la littérature pour recenser et décrire l'utilisation de cette échelle dans la recherche interventionnelle sur l'autisme. En triant trois bases de données bibliographiques différentes sur une recherche associant les mots-clés « vineland » et « autism », nous avons inclus dans notre revue 20 articles d'études interventionnelles sur l'autisme utilisant la VABS-2 comme critère de jugement principal. Cette revue a pu mettre en évidence un caractère modulable et universel de la Vineland, s'adaptant à différents âges, différentes cultures et différentes interventions thérapeutiques, dans le cadre du trouble du spectre autistique. Elle a cependant montré un probable manque de spécificité, en particulier pour son utilisation dans les populations adultes. The Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scale 2 (VABS-2) is mainly used to describe the adaptive behaviour of autistic individuals. It is also an evaluation criterion in intervention studies and is used to measure the impact of intervention on the symptoms of autism. We conducted a literature review to describe the use of this scale in autism intervention studies. Following a search of three different databases using "vineland" and "autism" as key words, we included in our review 20 articles on autism intervention studies using VABS-2 as the primary outcome. This review highlights the modular and universal nature of the Vineland scale which can be adapted to different ages, cultures and therapeutic interventions within autism spectrum disorders. Adaptive behaviour in children with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is defined as the degree to which the children can be self-reliant and function independently in real-life conditions. Assessing the adaptive behaviour is vital to provide insight and guide the diagnosis of ASD. Therefore, this scoping review aims to map the utilization of adaptive behaviour assessments conducted by occupational therapists for children with ASD. Published articles between 2006 and 2020 were retrieved from three databases, including Scopus, Cochrane Library, and the Web of Sciences, that included English, full-text published articles, reviews, or thesis which provide relevant highlights on adaptive behaviour assessment for ASD. Nineteen articles met the inclusion criteria. There are three themes emerged from the review: adaptive behaviour as an individual, adaptive behaviour as a society and utilising the instrument. Adaptive behaviour assessment has been used as a comprehensive monitoring tool for functional status among children with ASD. This scoping review mapped the utilization of adaptive behaviour assessment by an occupational therapist that directs future research and clinicians on potential future guidelines of adaptive behaviour evaluation for children with ASD. Adaptability refers to cognitive, behavioural and emotional adjustments that assist in effectively responding to novel and uncertain situations. It is acknowledged as a key attribute of the successful management of dynamic interpersonal interactions. Yet, adaptability remains largely unstudied in the field of psychology and law. Here, we take the first steps to fill this research gap. In Study 1, university students (n = 30) acted as 'agents' that had to complete three 'undercover missions' that required an adaptive response. Adaptability was measured through a self‐report scale. In Study 2, practitioners (n = 22), experienced with covert policing, watched recordings of the undercover missions from Experiment 1. The practitioners rated the adaptive responses of the agents, as well as their ability to attain the mission objectives. The findings showed that our experimental set‐up successfully elicited adaptive behaviour. Practitioners' ratings of adaptability were strongly related to their ratings of trustworthiness, rapport and belief in whether the agent would accomplish their missions, but not with actual mission success. Given the importance of adaptive behaviour (AB) for the identification of intellectual disability and the design of intervention plans for people with Down syndrome (DS), this cross-sectional study explored AB in infants with DS, compared to infants with typical development (TD). Method: we evaluated 60 infants (10–36 months) with ABAS-II (32 with DS, 28 with TD). Using the developmental trajectories method for data analysis, we compared AB between the two groups. We found significant differences between groups in most of the skills assessed, in favour of infants with TD. Three different patterns of trajectories were found for the AB and the relation between the groups: (1) no differences (Leisure and Self-Care Skills); (2) differences at the beginning of the trajectory and then a similar slope (Home Living, Self-Direction, Social and Motor Skills); and (3) a similar starting-point with differences in the trajectories (Communication, Community Use, Pre-Academic, and Health and Safety). This empirical cross-sectional study contributes to the understanding of the development of AB in children with DS, showing both weak areas and skills that continue improving over time in these early years. In recent years, German cities were heavily impacted by pluvial flooding and related damage is projected to increase due to climate change and urbanisation. It is important to ask how to improve urban pluvial flood risk management. To understand the current state of property level adaptation, a survey was conducted in four municipalities that had recently been impacted by pluvial flooding. A hybrid framework based on the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) and the Protection Action Decision Model (PADM) was used to investigate drivers of adaptive behaviour through both descriptive and regression analyses. Descriptive statistics revealed that participants tended to instal more low‐ and medium‐cost measures than high‐cost measures. Regression analyses showed that coping appraisal increased protection motivation, but that the adaptive behaviour also depends on framing factors, particularly homeownership. We further found that, while threat appraisal solely affects protection motivation and responsibility appraisal affects solely maladaptive thinking, coping appraisal affects both. Our results indicate that PMT is a solid starting point to study adaptive behaviours in the context of pluvial flooding, but we need to go beyond that by, for instance, considering factors of the PADM, such as responsibility, ownership, or respondent age, to fully understand this complex decision‐making process. The multiple immunity responses exhibited in the population and co-circulating variants documented during pandemics show a high potential to generate diverse long-term epidemiological scenarios. Transmission variability, immune uncertainties and human behaviour are crucial features for the predictability and implementation of effective mitigation strategies. Nonetheless, the effects of individual health incentives on disease dynamics are not well understood. We use a behavioural-immuno-epidemiological model to study the joint evolution of human behaviour and epidemic dynamics for different immunity scenarios. Our results reveal a trade-off between the individuals' immunity levels and the behavioural responses produced. We find that adaptive human behaviour can avoid dynamical resonance by avoiding large outbreaks, producing subsequent uniform outbreaks. Our forward-looking behaviour model shows an optimal planning horizon that minimizes the epidemic burden by balancing the individual risk-benefit trade-off. We find that adaptive human behaviour can compensate for differential immunity levels, equalizing the epidemic dynamics for scenarios with diverse underlying immunity landscapes. Our model can adequately capture complex empirical behavioural dynamics observed during pandemics. We tested our model for different US states during the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, we explored extensions of our modelling framework that incorporate the effects of lockdowns, the emergence of a novel variant, prosocial attitudes and pandemic fatigue.

Abstract Background Atypical reactions to the sensory environment are often reported in autistic individuals, with a high degree of variability across the sensory modalities. These sensory differences have been shown to promote challenging behaviours and distress in autistic individuals and are predictive of other functions including motor, social, and cognitive abilities. Preliminary research suggests that specific sensory differences may cluster together within individuals creating discrete sensory phenotypes. However, the manner in which these sensory differences cluster, and whether the resulting phenotypes are associated with specific cognitive and social challenges is unclear. Methods Short sensory profile data from 599 autistic children and adults between the ages of 1 and 21 years were subjected to a K-means cluster analysis. Analysis of variances compared age, adaptive behaviour, and traits associated with autism, attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and obsessive and compulsive disorder across the resultant clusters. Results A five-cluster model was found to minimize error variance and produce five sensory phenotypes: (1) sensory adaptive, (2) generalized sensory differences, (3) taste and smell sensitivity, (4) under-responsive and sensation seeking, and (5) movement difficulties with low energy. Age, adaptive behaviour, and traits associated with autism, attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and obsessive and compulsive disorder were found to differ significantly across the five phenotypes. Limitations The results were based on parent-report measures of sensory processing, adaptive behaviour, traits associated with autism, attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and obsessive and compulsive disorder, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Further, not all measures are standardized, or psychometrically validated with an autism population. Autistic individuals with an intellectual disability were underrepresented in this sample. Further, as these data were obtained from established records from a large provincial database, not all measures were completed for all individuals. Conclusions These findings suggest that sensory difficulties in autistic individuals can be clustered into sensory phenotypes, and that these phenotypes are associated with behavioural differences. Given the large degree of heterogeneity in sensory difficulties seen in the autistic population, these sensory phenotypes represent an effective way to parse that heterogeneity and create phenotypes that may aid in the development of effective treatments and interventions for sensory difficulties.

The pandemic reality has a huge impact on the daily functioning of people around the world. Young adults have had to face new requirements and barriers both at school and at work. The prolonged lockdown was connected with passive observation and learning about the dynamics of changes which were taking place in front of our own eyes during the following months of the pandemic. After the initial reaction of shock and generalized peritraumatic anxiety, a gradual development of adaptive behaviour was observed. The article analysis data collected online at two-time points (April 2020 and November–December 2020). The main research question was to explore if there is a change in well-being among the group of young adults in response to the restrictions imposed by the government on the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Among women and men, statistically significant differences between the results in the declared attitudes regarding compliance with hygiene and social behavior at two-time points were confirmed. The captured differences may suggest a gradual reduction of generalized anxiety related to the COVID-19 pandemic threat. Originally increased results in the use of behaviors aimed at reducing the possibility of infection, in the second round were significantly lower, confirming the lessened negative emotions and normalization of behavior. ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder of unknown aetiology but with a known contribution of pathogenic immune-mediated mechanisms. HERVs are associated with several neuropsychiatric diseases, including ASD. We studied anti-HERV-W, -K and -H-env immune profiles in ASD children to analyse differences between their respective mothers and child/mother control pairs and possible correlations to ASD severity and loss of adaptive abilities. Of the 84 studied individuals, 42 children (23 ASD and 19 neurotypical) and their paired mothers underwent clinical and neuropsychological evaluations. ASD severity was analysed with standardised tests. Adaptive functioning was studied with ABAS-II and GAC index. Plasma anti-env responses of HERV-K, -H and -W were tested with indirect ELISA. ASD and neurotypical children did not differ in age, gender, comorbidities and anti-HERV responses. In children with ASD, anti-HERV levels were not correlated to ASD severity, while a significant inverse correlation was found between anti-HERV-W-248-262 levels and adaptive/social abilities. Upregulation of anti-HERV-W response correlates to dysfunctional social and adaptive competences in ASD but not in controls, suggesting anti-HERV response plays a role in the appearance of peculiar ASD symptoms. Adaptive façades are multifunctional systems that are able to change their functions, features, or behaviour over time in response to changing boundary conditions or performance requirements. As one of the significant developments in the façade industry over the last decade, the adaptive façade offers an intelligent solution that can decrease energy consumption and potentially increase users’ comfort in a building. From an engineering perspective, these advanced technologies aim to improve the overall performance of the building while generating a better indoor environment for the users, but unfortunately, investigations show that this goal is not always achieved. This is why, to bridge this performance gap, we embark on a change of perspective in façade design, from a technology-centred to a human-centred one. This research emphasizes that, with their changeability aspects, adaptive façade technologies offer unique potential, although the design of such façades requires a deeper understanding of users. With this as its focus, this paper aims to identify the factors affecting the user experience in a working environment, considering the interactions of the user with building services and façade systems from a holistic point of view, in which façade-user relationships are to be distinguished, towards the larger aim of developing a human-centred approach for adaptive façade design.

A cross-sectional study was conducted in 50 bedrooms in Shanghai, each for one week during summer, to investigate the effects of the bedroom environment on sleep quality. Sleep quality was recorded with a wrist-worn sleep tracker and assessed with a questionnaire. The measurements from 168 person-nights were analysed after excluding unreliable data. The overnight means of bedroom temperature, relative humidity, CO 2 and PM 2.5 concentrations, which were continuously measured were between 21 to 30 °C, 43 to 86 %, 375 to 2756 ppm, and <1 to 43 μg/m3, respectively. Sleep duration in 36.3 % of the nights was less than 6 h, which is too short according to the recommendation of the American Sleep Foundation. The nights were then classified into two categories, with sleep duration above or below 6 h. The results show that the sleep quality in the short-sleep category was more sensitive to the bedroom environment. In the longer-sleep duration category, light sleep decreased with higher humidity and increased with higher PM 2.5 concentration. In the short-sleep duration category, all the main sleep quality parameters including sleep efficiency and the duration and percentage of deep and rapid eye movement sleep stage decreased, and time spent awake increased with increased bedroom temperature, humidity, CO 2 and PM 2.5 concentration. The occupants who used air conditioning had a lower indoor temperature and humidity at night; opening windows decreased the indoor CO 2 concentration but increased the PM 2.5 concentration. These results suggest the need for alternative solutions to natural ventilation during summer in dwellings in Shanghai.
