The increasing presence of young people on the Nigerian streets participating in child labour has continued to attract public policy attention. Available research on child labour reveals sparse scholarly information on the security implications for young people in South-West Nigeria, particularly Ondo State. The study aims to understand the argument that child labour poses major security threats to the overall well-being of child labourers. A total of 147 questionnaires were distributed, with 12 focus group discussions and 12 semi-structured interviews conducted with young people and guardians (mostly mothers). Frequency distributions were employed to analyse the quantitative data, and NVivo (v.14) qualitative software was used to identify themes and sub-themes. A content analytical tool was used to make sense of the themes. Child labour activities include street trading, hawking, domestic help and construction work. Causes of child labour activities include lack of access to basic education, cultural and societal beliefs, poverty, and family breakdown, among others. Security threats include occasional kidnapping for ransom, sexual molestation, slavery, exploitation, risk of injury, diseases, and death. The study suggests a more responsive Child's Rights Act in Nigeria for the protection of the rights and dignity of every child. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The antecedents of counterproductive work behaviour (CWB) in the higher education sector have remained unexamined in available literature. Moreover, the impact of job insecurity, job stress, and negative emotions on the occurrence of CWB within the academic context have hardly been interrogated. This study therefore, aimed at investigating the impact of job insecurity, job stress and negative emotions on CWB and further examining the mediating role of job stress and negative emotions in the occurrences of CWB among academics. Data was collected from 716 academics in Technical Universities in Ghana using self-reported questionnaires with close-ended questions and a convenient sampling technique. Confirmatory Factor Analysis was conducted to verify the measurement structure of the constructs. Structural Equation Model was employed to test the hypotheses in the conceptual model. The result showed a statistically significant direct effect of job insecurity, job stress and negative emotions on the occurrence of counterproductive work behaviour among academics. It was further revealed that there is a positive relationship between job insecurity and job stress, with job stress partially mediating the relationship between job insecurity and counterproductive work behaviour. Furthermore, negative emotions acted as a partial mediator in the relationship between job stress and counterproductive work behaviour. The findings have implications for higher education institutions in taking steps to address job insecurity, job stress, and negative emotional experiences of academics to mitigate counterproductive work behaviour among academics. The study assesses how curriculum design can be used as a lever to propel robust entrepreneurship intentions among graduates in reaction to rising youth unemployment. A total of 19 respondents (graduates and educators) were interviewed to understand the role of curriculum design in the development of entrepreneurial intentions for employment and venture creation. Themes and sub-themes were identified with the NVivo (12) qualitative software. Results revealed ambiguous and outdated course curricula incapacitated to explore and provoke appropriate entrepreneurial intentions. The right mix of entrepreneurial intentions, skills, traits, and competency is largely not infused in the existing higher education curriculum in Nigeria. Addressing graduates' unemployment challenges is unconnected to having a robust and practical curriculum in tandem with global best practices. The study concludes with the need to revoke the existing Nigeria's higher education curriculum through the infusion and application of entrepreneurial intentions skills and traits. Dialogues on waste management procedures are scarcely examined through public views and awareness narratives. Existing studies have largely interrogated waste management procedures from the prism of environmental and health concerns. The present study addresses this research chasm through the dissection of public views and awareness of waste management procedures. The study employs a quantitative approach with a random sampling of 110 community members through questionnaire administration to unravel their views and awareness of the waste management procedure. The findings show a range of issues including that the community members are not satisfied with the Durban Solid Waste (DSW) management procedure, low or non-existing consultation between customers and DSW operators and poor monitoring of waste management. Others are poor awareness of waste management procedures and lack of explicit management intervention in the management of waste procedure by the DSW. The study recommends improved services, management intervention in the areas of consultations and monitoring. DSW officials should conduct daily monitoring within the community to ascertain if proper services are being delivered. Any irregular activities such as illegal dumping and littering must be severely dealt with for the health of members of the community at large. Conversations on green human resource management (GHRM) are relatively new in the canon of human resource discourse. Existing studies have been focused on industrial and service industries of the private sector leaving a research gap in the public sector establishment, especially at the municipality level of governance. This study aims to address this gap by interrogating the perception and understanding of green behaviour and the evaluation of green behaviour performance. A total of 12-unit managers and employees of the human resource management department of the eThekwini municipality were purposively recruited based on existing knowledge of the green behaviour concept. The semi-structured interview approach was used in eliciting qualitative data. The NVivo (v.12) qualitative software was employed for the identification of themes and the content qualitative analytical tool was employed to make sense of the various themes. The findings show a range of perceptions and understanding of green behavior including change in management behaviour towards environmental sustainability goals, moving towards a paperless environment, re-engineering and automation of work process and safeguarding the environment through pro-environmental behaviours. The evaluation of employees' green behaviour performance can be achieved through regular introspection and monitoring of the operations of green environmental activities, the integration of green behaviour targets with key performance indicators (KPI) and the benefits of green behaviour to the organisation. This paper explored the patterns of academic casualization, challenges and its implications for university development in two selected public universities in Lagos, Nigeria. Academic casualization is the employment of academics who are engaged in teaching and learning activities on a casual basis. These casual academics' remunerations and welfare packages are meagre, compared to permanent academics. A total of 24 casual academics were selected on purpose and convenience, while the labour market segmentation theory was employed as a theoretical leaning to understand the different assumptions raised in this study. The NVivo (v.12) qualitative software was employed to identify themes from the transcript and the content qualitative analytical tool used to analyse the various themes. The analyses revealed two strands of academic casualization practices--contract and part-time work--with varying degrees of challenges that include low remuneration, job insecurity, medical and other workplace allowances, and the proscription of the right of association, among others. The developmental implications of academic casualization reveal reduced university scholarship and research capacity and declining societal relevance with the influx of casual academics in the university's system. The study makes a case for a robust measure from relevant government agencies in the regulation and control of academic casualization practices for the development of public universities and capacity building. Commenting on the changing global order ushered in by globalization, two shades of debates on how the world of work is affected has continued to evolve. The early debates advance justifications for the abolishment of restrictions for improved shared common interest in terms of economic, political, social and cultural advancement, and most importantly ease in work execution and other production processes. However, the latter school of thoughts have chronicled the devastating effects of globalization for the world of work. This lends credence to the contention that globalization possess twin narrative to the world of work. In view of these arguments, this paper, through empirical explanation, interrogates the rising influence of globalization with a focus to juxtapose the progress or retrogression of globalization to work in the Nigerian manufacturing industry of Lagos State. Previous studies on this topic exemplify a great departure by largely focusing on theoretical explanations. The Global Capitalism Theory as a theoretical leaning anchored the study. A total of 15 trade union leaders were chosen for semi-structured interview through convenience and purposive samplings. Two divergent views of analyses uncovered. Findings revealed that globalization has increase global interconnectedness among industries, ascending competitiveness and jobs for high skilled workers and the expansion of the frontiers of job execution. On the other, findings show a fast dehumanization of work and extreme job loss with the increase tide of globalization. The analysis takes the position that for the world of work to survive this epoch of globalization, organizations must devise and harness strategies to avoid being capsized by the winds of globalization.
