While Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) infection is a known risk factor, recent studies highlight the significant role of DNA methylation in NPC pathogenesis. Aberrant methylation, particularly at CpG sites, can silence tumour suppressor genes, promoting uncontrolled cell growth. This study aims to analyse the methylation patterns in Indonesian NPC patients through whole-epigenome sequencing.Methods: Seven clinical nasopharyngeal cancer samples were collected and confirmed histopathologically. DNA was extracted, sequenced using Oxford Nanopore technology, and aligned to the GRCh38 human reference genome. Methylation analysis was performed using modkit and statistical analysis with R software. Enriched pathways and processes were identified using ClusterProfiler in R, and gene overlap analysis was conducted.Results: The analysis identified both globally hypermethylated and hypomethylated NPC samples. Key tumour suppressor genes, such as PRKCB, PLCB3, ITGB3, EPHA2, PLCE1, PRKCD, CDKN2A, CDKN2B, RPS6KA2, ERBB4, LRRC4, AKT1, PPP2R5C, and STK11 were frequently hypermethylated and confirmed to have lower expression in an independent NPC transcriptome cohort, suggesting their role in NPC carcinogenesis. Enriched KEGG pathways included PI3K-Akt signalling, ECM–receptor interaction, and focal adhesion. The presence of EBV DNA was confirmed in all samples, implicating its role in influencing methylation patterns.Discussion: This study provides comprehensive insights into the epigenetic landscape of NPC, underscoring the role of CpG methylation in tumour suppressor gene silencing. These findings pave the way for targeted therapies and highlight the need for region-specific approaches in NPC management.Keywords: nasopharyngeal cancer, epigenome, methylation, Epstein–Barr virus, whole-genome sequencing

Introduction: Published data investigating a time-dependent effect of initiation of antiarrhythmic therapy for shockable in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) is lacking. We aimed to evaluate the association between time of intravenous amiodarone or lidocaine administration and return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) in patients with IHCA caused by ventricular fibrillation (VF) or pulseless ventricular tachycardia (pVT). Methods: This was a retrospective, multi-center, single health system, observational cohort study of patients with an IHCA caused by VF/pVT and who received amiodarone or lidocaine during 2014–2024. The primary outcome was ROSC, and the secondary outcome was survival to hospital discharge. A multivariable logistic regression model was constructed to evaluate the association between (1) time to drug administration and (2) drug administration prior to the second defibrillator shock on both survival outcomes. Results: A total of 88 patients with a shockable IHCA were identified. Longer time to amiodarone or lidocaine administration was associated with lower likelihood of ROSC (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.91; 95% CI: 0.83–0.99, P = 0.04) but not with survival to discharge (aOR 0.99; CI 0.90–1.10P = 0.90). Administration of antiarrhythmic therapy prior to the second defibrillator shock was associated with higher likelihood of ROSC (aOR 6.48; CI 2.08–20.21, P = 0.001) and survival to discharge (aOR 2.82; CI 1.03–7.77, P = 0.04). Conclusion: Early administration of amiodarone or lidocaine, particularly prior to the second defibrillator shock, was associated with an increased odds of survival outcomes in IHCA with shockable rhythms.

In this paper, a compact 2×2 hexagon ring-shaped MIMO antenna operating at the terahertz band is proposed for future 6G wireless communication applications. The antenna is designed using graphene, due to its unique high-speed transmission capabilities. DGS and NL decoupling approaches are applied to enhance isolation between the two radiating elements. A parametric study is performed to investigate the significance of using these methods. Performance in terms of different metrics is studied using the CST Microwave Studio simulator. The final outcomes show that the proposed MIMO antenna achieves 23 dB of isolation, 0.004859 of ECC, 0.004 bits/sec/Hz of CCL, and efficiency of 98%.

Despite therapeutic advancements, NPC prognosis remains poor, necessitating a deeper understanding of its genomics. Here, we present a comprehensive whole genome sequencing (WGS) view of NPC genomics and its correlation with the phenotype.Methods: This study involved WGS of a clinical NPC biopsy specimen. Sequencing was carried out using a long read sequencer from Oxford Nanopore. Analysis of the variants involved correlation with the phenotype of NPC.Results: A loss of genes within chromosome 6 from copy number variation (CNV) was found. The lost genes included HLA-A, HLA-B, and HLA-C, which work in the antigen presentation process. This loss of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) apparatus resulted in the tumour’s ability to evade immune recognition. The tumour exhibited an immunologically “cold” phenotype, with mild tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes, supporting the possible etiology of loss of antigen presentation capability. Furthermore, the driver mutation PIK3CA gene was identified along with various other gene variants affecting numerous signaling pathways.Discussion: Comprehensive WGS was able to detect various mutations and genomic losses, which could explain tumour progression and immune evasion ability. Furthermore, the study identified the loss of other genes related to cancer and immune pathways, emphasizing the complexity of NPC genomics. In conclusion, this study underscores the significance of MHC class I gene loss and its probable correlation with the cold tumour phenotype observed in NPC.Keywords: nasopharyngeal cancer, genomic, MHC class I, antigen processing and presentation, copy number variation, deletion

Biomimetics is the science of imitating nature’s designs and processes to create innovative solutions for various fields, including dentistry and craniofacial reconstruction. In these areas, biomimetics involves drawing inspiration from living organisms/systems to develop new materials, techniques, and devices that closely resemble natural tissue structures and enhance functionality. This field has successfully demonstrated its potential to revolutionize craniofacial procedures, significantly improving patient outcomes. In dentistry, biomimetics offers exciting possibilities for the advancement of new dental materials, restorative techniques, and regenerative potential. By analyzing the structure/composition of natural teeth and the surrounding tissues, researchers have developed restorative materials that mimic the properties of teeth, as well as regenerative techniques that might assist in repairing enamel, dentin, pulp, cementum, periodontal ligament, and bone. In craniofacial reconstruction, biomimetics plays a vital role in developing innovative solutions for facial trauma, congenital defects, and various conditions affecting the maxillofacial region. By studying the intricate composition and mechanical properties of the skull and facial bones, clinicians and engineers have been able to replicate natural structures leveraging computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and 3D printing. This has allowed for the creation of patient-specific scaffolds, implants, and prostheses that accurately fit a patient’s anatomy. This review highlights the current evidence on the application of biomimetics in the fields of dentistry and craniofacial reconstruction.

Abstract In this study, phosphorus (PO4 3–-P) is removed from water samples using zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). These nanoparticles are produced easily, quickly, and sustainably using Onion extracts (Allium cepa) at an average crystallite size of 8.13 nm using the Debye–Scherrer equation in the hexagonal wurtzite phase. The characterization and investigation of bio-synthesis ZnO NPs were carried out. With an initial concentration of 250 mg/L of P, the effects of the adsorbent dose, pH, contact time, and temperature were examined. At pH = 3 and T = 300 K, ZnO NPs achieved the optimum sorption capacity of 84 mg/g, which was superior to many other adsorbents. The isothermal study was found to fit the Langmuir model at a monolayer capacity of 89.8 mg/g, and the kinetic study was found to follow the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption process was verified to be endothermic and spontaneous by thermodynamic characteristics. As a result of their low cost as an adsorbent and their high metal absorption, ZnO NPs were found to be the most promising sorbent in this investigation and have the potential to be used as effective sorbents for the removal of P from aqueous solutions. The antimicrobial activity results showed that ZnO NPs concentration had greater antibacterial activity than conventional Cefotaxime, which was utilized as a positive control in the inhibitory zone. However, no inhibitory zone was visible in the controlled wells that had been supplemented with onion extract and DMSO.

Abstract The present paper evaluates the photocatalytic degradation (PCD) performance of the biofabricated hematite nanoparticles (α-HNPs) for the degradation approach of the Cefotaxime (Cfm). The optimum pH of the solution to achieve the best PCD was found to be 10.5. The kinetics study for the PCD of the Cfm via α-HNPs has been investigated and the reaction was found to be fellow pseudo-first-order at R2 = 0.992. The mass loading impact of α-HNPs was investigated and estimated for the maximum degradation of Cfm 0.4 mg/mL. UV–Vis confirmed that α-HNPs had a direct transition bandgap at 3.78 eV at a maximum absorption wavelength of 362 nm with suspension stability for 7 days. The probable mechanism of the Cfm PCD via α-HNPs and the degradation pathway was conducted. The validation of the suspension stability of the α-HNPs (−68.6 ± 11.8 mV) was determined using the zeta potential investigation test. XRD investigation was conducted after Cfm PCD showing an average crystallite size of 27.0 nm. XRD, TEM, SEM, EDX, and FT-IR analyses have been conducted for the α-HNPs before and after Cfm PCD confirming the high efficiency for the reusability of the current biocatalyst α-HNPs for further use. TEM results of the particle sizes of α-HNPs were found at 19.2 ± 4.4 and 20.6 ± 7.4 nm respectively before and after Cfm PCD. The efficiency of the Cfm PCD was found to be 99.1% after 6 h. High potent as an antibacterial agent of α-HNPs was investigated either α-HNPs alone or after its PCD activity against Cfm. The antibacterial activity revealed high sensitivity, especially toward Gram-positive species indicating its promising ability against pathogenic issues. Interestingly, Cfm@α-HNPs showed superior anti-proliferative activity as tested by MTT assay and were able to induce apoptosis in MCF7 and HepG2 cell lines using the flow cytometry technique at 20.7% and 17% respectively. Also, The IC50 of hydrogen peroxide scavenging was estimated and it was manifested that 635.8 and 665.6 μg/mL of α-HNPs before and after the PCD process of Cfm respectively.
