Abstract: PURPOSE We investigated the role of high-dose chemotherapy and autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT) as the initial systemic treatment in patients with hormone-unresponsive metastatic breast cancer. We studied a regimen involving a split-course schedule using sequential administration of two pairs of alkylating agents separated by 5 days of rest. The rest period was intended to provide time for recovery from the treatment-immediate adverse effects, thereby allowing further dose escalation. PATIENTS AND METHODS The treatment consisted of thiotepa 225 to 300 mg/m2/d (days - 11 to -9), cisplatin 50 to 100 mg/m2/d (days - 11 and -3), and cyclophosphamide 60 mg/kg/d (days - 3 and -2). Dose escalation was performed in the initial 15 patients before reaching dose-limiting toxicities. When feasible, responding patients received posttransplant irradiation to sites of residual or prior bulky disease. Patients with bone marrow or CNS involvement, prior pelvic irradiation, or age greater than 55 years were excluded. RESULTS Thirty-nine patients with measurable or assessable tumor were enrolled: 23 with visceral metastases, 11 with only soft tissue disease, and five with skeletal involvement. Twenty-five patients had received no chemotherapy for metastatic disease before transplantation. The dose-limiting toxicities of this therapy were renal and gastrointestinal. Six patients died from complications: four of a fungal infection and two of hemorrhage. A complete response was achieved in 14 patients (36%), three of whom are free of disease at 79+, 55+, and 40+ months after transplantation. Ten of 25 patients not treated with standard-dose chemotherapy for metastatic disease achieved a complete response (40%). The three patients in continuous remission were in the untreated relapse group. CONCLUSION This single high-dose treatment achieved a relatively high complete response rate in patients with metastatic breast cancer and may have cured some of them. On the other hand, the split-course dose schedule as tested here did not permit significant dose-intensification.

Abstract: Cellular therapies with cardiomyocytes produced from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC-CMs) offer a potential route to cardiac regeneration as a treatment for chronic ischemic heart disease. Here, we report successful long-term engraftment and in vivo maturation of autologous iPSC-CMs in two rhesus macaques with small, subclinical chronic myocardial infarctions, all without immunosuppression. Longitudinal positron emission tomography imaging using the sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) reporter gene revealed stable grafts for over 6 and 12 months, with no teratoma formation. Histological analyses suggested capability of the transplanted iPSC-CMs to mature and integrate with endogenous myocardium, with no sign of immune cell infiltration or rejection. By contrast, allogeneic iPSC-CMs were rejected within 8 weeks of transplantation. This study provides the longest-term safety and maturation data to date in any large animal model, addresses concerns regarding neoantigen immunoreactivity of autologous iPSC therapies, and suggests that autologous iPSC-CMs would similarly engraft and mature in human hearts., Competing Interests: Declaration of interests Some of these experiments were performed while D.S.N. and C.E.M. were employees of, and K. 5. Overview of State Laws Restricting Alcohol Outlet Density in the United States.

Abstract: Objectives: Complementing the extensive research literature demonstrating that increased alcohol outlet density is associated with excessive alcohol consumption and related harms, this article synthesizes information on the types of alcohol outlet density restrictions in US state-level laws., Design: Statutes and regulations related to alcohol outlet density in all 50 states and the District of Columbia in effect as of January 1, 2022, were collected using Westlaw. State-level density restrictions were coded according to 4 variables and overlaid with existing research on state-specific local authority to regulate outlet density. Alcohol outlet density laws in Michigan and Massachusetts were analyzed in detail as case studies., Setting: United States., Main Outcome Measure: US state-level licensing laws restricting alcohol outlet density., Results: Thirty-three states and the District of Columbia have state-level licensing laws that limit alcohol outlet density. Of those, 25 have population-based restrictions, 8 have distance-based restrictions, 7 have quotas, and 6 require the licensing agency to consider density-related factors. Within the same group of 34 jurisdictions, 22 apply restrictions to both on- and off-premises outlets, 5 apply them only to on-premises outlets, and 7 apply them only to off-premises outlets. Among the 32 states where localities lack authority to license alcohol outlets, two-thirds have state-level laws restricting outlet density. State-level density restrictions also exist in approximately two-thirds of the states where localities have licensing authority. Case studies of Michigan and Massachusetts highlight how state-level density restrictions operate in practice., Conclusions: Two-thirds of jurisdictions have state-level alcohol outlet density restrictions, with population-based restrictions being the most common. In addition, outlet density restrictions may exist regardless of limits on local control and whether localities with authority to enact density restrictions have done so. 6. Salivary excretion of systemically injected [ 18 F]DCFPyL in prostate cancer patients undergoing PSMA scans.

Abstract: Introduction: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is present in high amounts in salivary glands, but it is unclear whether labeled binders of PSMA are excreted in the saliva., Methods: Ten patients with prostate cancer underwent whole-body [ 18 F]DCFPyL PET/CT (NCT03181867), and saliva samples were collected between 0-120 minutes post-injection. [ 18 F]DCFPyL salivary excretion was measured over 120 minutes and expressed as %ID/g. Protein-associated binding was estimated by the percentage of [ 18 F]DCFPyL versus parent radiotracer., Results: All PET scans of 10 patients (69 ± 8 years) with histologically confirmed prostate cancer (PSA= 2.4 ± 2.4, and Gleason Grade = 6-9) showed high uptake of [ 18 F]-DCFPyL in salivary glands while 8 patients demonstrated high uptake in the saliva at 45 minutes. The intact [ 18 F]-DCFPyL (98%) was also confirmed in the saliva samples at 120 min with increasing salivary radioactivity between 30-120 min., Conclusion: Systemically injected [ 18 F]DCFPyL shows salivary gland uptake, an increasing amount of which is secreted in saliva over time and is not maximized by 120 minutes post-injection. Abstract: Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) express somatostatin receptors (SSTRs) 2 and 5. Modified variants of somatostatin, the cognate ligand for SSTR2 and SSTR5, are used in treatment for metastatic and locoregional disease. Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy with 177 Lu-DOTATATE (DOTA-octreotate), a β-particle-emitting somatostatin derivative, has demonstrated survival benefit in patients with SSTR-positive NETs. Despite excellent results, a subset of patients has tumors that are resistant to treatment, and alternative agents are needed. Targeted α-particle therapy has been shown to kill tumors that are resistant to targeted β-particle therapy, suggesting that targeted α-particle therapy may offer a promising treatment option for patients with 177 Lu-DOTATATE-resistant disease. Although DOTATATE can chelate the clinically relevant α-particle-emitting radionuclide 225 Ac, the labeling reaction requires high temperatures, and the resulting radioconjugate has suboptimal stability. Methods: We designed and synthesized MACROPATATE (MACROPA-octreotate), a novel radioconjugate capable of chelating 225 Ac at room temperature, and assessed its in vitro and in vivo performance. Results: MACROPATATE demonstrated comparable affinity to DOTATATE (dissociation constant, 21 nM) in U2-OS-SSTR2, a SSTR2-positive transfected cell line. 225 Ac-MACROPATATE demonstrated superior serum stability at 37°C over time compared with 225 Ac-DOTATATE. Biodistribution studies demonstrated higher tumor uptake of 225 Ac-MACROPATATE than of 225 Ac-DOTATATE in mice engrafted with subcutaneous H69 NETs. Therapy studies showed that 225 Ac-MACROPATATE exhibits significant antitumor and survival benefit compared with saline control in mice engrafted with SSTR-positive tumors. However, the increased accumulation of 225 Ac-MACROPATATE in liver and kidneys and subsequent toxicity to these organs decreased its therapeutic index compared with 225 Ac-DOTATATE. Conclusion: 225 Ac-MACROPATATE and 225 Ac-DOTATATE exhibit favorable therapeutic efficacy in animal models. 8. Cell radiolabeling with acoustophoresis cell washing.

Abstract: Labeling immune cells with zirconium-89 ( 89 Zr)-oxine has become a viable method to track cells in vivo by PET in various pre-clinical animal models and in clinical applications. Currently, 89 Zr-oxine cell labeling is performed manually, which requires a highly trained specialist and is prone to human error. As the first phase in developing a fully automated radiolabeling system to address this problem, we assess the use of acoustophoresis cell washing to replace the centrifugal cell washing used in the current 89 Zr-oxine cell radiolabeling procedure. To accomplish this, a cell radiolabeling procedure was developed in which two steps requiring a centrifuge to wash cells were replaced using acoustophoresis cell washing methods. The process was tested using murine EL4 lymphoma and T cells. The centrifuge cell labeling procedure was used as a control to compare the acoustophoresis cell washing procedure. The acoustophoresis method produced radiolabeled cells with similar properties to the centrifugal method when comparing labeling efficiency, labeled specific activity, efficacy of removing unbound 89 Zr-oxine from the suspension, cell viability measured using annexin V/propidium iodide staining and activation function. This suggests that acoustophoresis cell washing can be used in the design of an automated benchtop, good manufacture practice-qualified acoustophoresis cell radiolabeling device., (© 2022. Abstract: The classical intent of PET imaging is to obtain the most accurate estimate of the amount of positron-emitting radiotracer in the smallest possible volume element located anywhere in the imaging subject at any time using the least amount of radioactivity. Reaching this goal, however, is confounded by an enormous array of interlinked technical issues that limit imaging system performance. As a result, advances in PET, human or animal, are the result of cumulative innovations across each of the component elements of PET, from data acquisition to image analysis. 11. In Vivo Tracking of Adoptively Transferred Natural Killer Cells in Rhesus Macaques Using 89 Zirconium-Oxine Cell Labeling and PET Imaging.

Abstract: Purpose: Trials of adoptive natural killer (NK)-cell immunotherapy for hematologic malignancies have thus far shown only marginal effects, despite the potent in vitro antitumor activity of these cells. Homing of infused cells to tumor microenvironments is critical for efficacy, but has not been well characterized. We established a novel method to track and quantify the distribution of adoptively transferred NK cells using rhesus macaques (RM) as a clinically relevant preclinical model., Experimental Design: RM NK cells were expanded ex vivo for 14-21 days, labeled with 89 Zr-oxine complex, and assessed for phenotype, function, and survival. Trafficking of 89 Zr-labeled ex vivo -expanded NK cells infused into RMs was monitored and quantitated by serial positron emission tomography (PET)/CT ( n = 3, 2.05 ± 0.72 MBq, 23.5 ± 2.0 × 10 6 NK cells/kg) and compared with that of 89 Zr-labeled nonexpanded NK cells, apoptotic NK cells, and hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC)., Results: NK cells retained sufficient levels of 89 Zr for accurate in vivo tracking for 7 days. 89 Zr labeling did not alter cellular phenotype, viability, or function. PET/CT showed NK cells initially localized in the lungs, followed by their migration to the liver, spleen, and, at low levels, bone marrow. One day following transfer, only 3.4% of infused NK cells localized to the BM versus 22.1% of HSPCs. No clinical side effects were observed, and dosimetry analysis indicated low organ radioexposures of 6.24 mSv/MBq (spleen) or lower., Conclusions: These data support translation of this technique to humans to track the distribution of adoptively infused cells and to develop novel techniques to improve immune cell homing to tumor microenvironments., (©2020 American Association for Cancer Research.)

Abstract: Molecular imaging approaches for metabolic and physiologic imaging of tumors have become important for treatment planning and response monitoring. However, the relationship between the physiologic and metabolic aspects of tumors is not fully understood. Here, we developed new hyperpolarized MRI and electron paramagnetic resonance imaging procedures that allow more direct assessment of tumor glycolysis and oxygenation status quantitatively. We investigated the spatial relationship between hypoxia, glucose uptake, and glycolysis in three human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma tumor xenografts with differing physiologic and metabolic characteristics. At the bulk tumor level, there was a strong positive correlation between 18 F-FDG-PET and lactate production, while pO 2 was inversely related to lactate production and 18 F-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ( 18 F-FDG) uptake. However, metabolism was not uniform throughout the tumors, and the whole tumor results masked different localizations that became apparent while imaging. 18 F-FDG uptake negatively correlated with pO 2 in the center of the tumor and positively correlated with pO 2 on the periphery. In contrast to pO 2 and 18 F-FDG uptake, lactate dehydrogenase activity was distributed relatively evenly throughout the tumor. The heterogeneity revealed by each measure suggests a multimodal molecular imaging approach can improve tumor characterization, potentially leading to better prognostics in cancer treatment. Abstract: Objective: 18 F-albumin, a vascular imaging agent, may have potential to assess tumor responses to anti-angiogenic therapies. In these studies tumor distribution volume of 18 F-albumin were first determined in various human tumor xenografts from biodistribtuion measurments and then one of the tumor type was used to evaluate changes in 18 F-albumin uptake in anti-angiognic tumor model. Method: 18 F-albumin was synthesized via conjugation of 6-[ 18 F]fluoronicotinic acid-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl ester, [ 18 F]F-Py-TFP, with rat albumin. From the biodistribution of 18 F-albumin in various human tumor xenografts tumor distribution volumes (DVs; tumor %ID/g :blood %ID/g ) were first determined at various time points. Then, the ability of 18 F-albumin to detect tumor angiogenic inhibition in one of these tumor types (U87MG) following treatment with sunitinib was evaluated by position emission tomography (PET) imaging at 0, 7, 14, and 21 days post treatment. Caliper measurements of tumor dimensions were also made at these same times. At Day 21, following imaging, biodistributions, autoradiography of tumor tissues and tumor blood vessel counts (CD31 IHC) were performed. Results: 18 F-albumin retention in various tumors steadily increased over time with U87MG tumor exhibiting the highest uptake (DV) at all times. Significant decreases in 18 F-albumin DVs were observed one week post-treatement (-39%) vs. controls whereas tumor caliper volumes were not significantly decreased until days 14 and 21. At day 21 the significant decrease in DVs in the treatment group (-44%) paralleled biodistribution DV measurements and was consistent with autoradiography and CD31 IHC findings. Conclusion: These data suggest that 18 F-albumin DVs obtained by imaging may serve as an early biomarker of the effectiveness of anti-angiogenic therapy and thus aid in patient management and treatment planning.

14. Bone marrow cell homing to sites of acute tibial fracture: 89 Zr-oxine cell labeling with positron emission tomographic imaging in a mouse model.

Abstract: Background: Bone fracture healing is dependent upon the rapid migration and engraftment of bone marrow (BM) progenitor and stem cells to the site of injury. Stromal cell-derived factor-1 plays a crucial role in recruiting BM cells expressing its receptor CXCR4. Recently, a CXCR4 antagonist, plerixafor, has been used to mobilize BM cells into the blood in efforts to enhance cell migration to sites of injury presumably improving healing. In this study, we employed zirconium-89 ( 89 Zr)-oxine-labeled BM cells imaged with positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) to visualize and quantitate BM cell trafficking following acute bone injury and to investigate the effect of plerixafor on BM cell homing. Unilateral 1-mm incisions were created in the distal tibia of mice either on the same day (d0) or 24 h (d1) after 89 Zr-oxine-labeled BM cell transfer (n = 4-6, 2-2.3 × 10 7 cells at 9.65-15.7 kBq/10 6 cells). Serial microPET/CT imaging was performed and migration of 89 Zr-labeled cells to the bone injury was quantified. The effects of three daily doses of plerixafor on cell trafficking were evaluated beginning on the day of fracture generation (n = 4-6). The labeled cells localizing to the fracture were analyzed by flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry., Results: In d0- and d1-fracture groups, 0.7% and 1.7% of administered BM cells accumulated within the fracture, respectively. Plerixafor treatment reduced BM cell migration to the fracture by approximately one-third (p < 0.05 for both fracture groups). Flow cytometry analysis of donor cells collected from the injured site revealed a predominance of CD45 + stem/progenitor cell populations and subsequent histological analysis demonstrated the presence of donor cells engrafted within sites of fracture repair., Conclusion: 89 Zr-oxine labeling enabled visualization and quantitation of BM cell recruitment to acute fractures and further demonstrated that plerixafor plays an inhibitory role in this recruitment.

15. Review of State Laws Restricting Local Authority to Impose Alcohol Taxes in the United States.

Abstract: Objective: Building on the extensive research literature demonstrating that increasing alcohol prices reduces excessive alcohol consumption and related harms, this article presents the results of a 50-state review of local authority to tax alcohol in the United States., Method: Between 2013 and 2015, legal databases and government websites were reviewed to collect and analyze relevant statutes, ordinances, and case law. Results reflect laws in effect as of January 1, 2015., Results: Nineteen states allow local alcohol taxation, although 15 of those have one or more major restrictions on local authority to tax. The types of major restrictions are (a) restrictions on the type of beverage and alcohol content that can be taxed, (b) caps on local alcohol taxes, (c) restrictions on the type of retailer where taxes can be imposed, (d) restrictions on jurisdictions within the state that can levy taxes, and (e) requirements for how tax revenue can be spent., Conclusions: The number and severity of restrictions on local authority to tax alcohol vary across states. Previous research has shown that increases in alcohol taxes can lead to reduced excessive alcohol consumption, which provides public health and economic benefits. Taxes can also provide funds to support local prevention and treatment services. Local alcohol taxes therefore present an important policy opportunity, both in states that restrict local authority and in states where local authority exists but is underused.

Abstract: Unlabelled: We evaluated the kinetics of (18)F-sodium fluoride (NaF) and reassessed the recommended dose, optimal uptake period, and reproducibility using a current-generation PET/CT scanner., Methods: In this prospective study, 73 patients (31 patients with multiple myeloma or myeloma precursor disease and 42 with prostate cancer) were injected with a mean administered dose of 141 MBq of (18)F-NaF. Sixty patients underwent 3 sequential sessions of 3-dimensional PET/CT of the torso beginning approximately 15 min after (18)F-NaF injection, followed by whole-body 3-dimensional PET/CT at 2 h. The remaining 13 prostate cancer patients were imaged only at 2 and 3 h after injection. Twenty-one prostate cancer patients underwent repeated baseline studies (mean interval, 5.9 d) to evaluate reproducibility., Results: The measured effective dose was 0.017 mSv/MBq, with the urinary bladder, osteogenic cells, and red marrow receiving the highest doses at 0.080, 0.077, and 0.028 mGy/MBq, respectively. Visual analysis showed that uptake in both normal and abnormal bone increased with time; however, the rate of increase decreased with time. A semiautomated workflow provided objective uptake parameters, including the mean standardized uptake value of all pixels within bone with SUVs greater than 10 and the average of the mean SUV of all malignant lesions identified by the algorithm. The values of these parameters for the images beginning at approximately 15 min and approximately 35 min were significantly different (0.3% change per minute). Differences between the later imaging time points were not significant (P < 0.01). Repeated baseline studies showed high intraclass correlations (>0.9) and relatively low critical percentage change (the value above which a change can be considered real) for these parameters. The tumor-to-normal bone ratio, based on the maximum SUV of identified malignant lesions, decreased with time; however, this difference was small, estimated at approximately 0.16%/min in the first hour., Conclusion: (18)F-NaF PET/CT images obtained with modest radiation exposures can result in highly reproducible imaging parameters. Although the tumor-to-normal bone ratio decreases slightly with time, the high temporal dependence during uptake periods less than 30 min may limit accurate quantitation. An uptake period of 60 ± 30 min has limited temporal dependence while maintaining a high tumor-to-normal bone ratio.

Abstract: We present azimuthal angle correlations of intermediate transverse momentum (1-4 GeV/c) hadrons from dijets in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at square root sNN=62.4 and 200 GeV. The away-side dijet induced azimuthal correlation is broadened, non-Gaussian, and peaked away from Delta phi=pi in central and semicentral collisions in all the systems. The broadening and peak location are found to depend upon the number of participants in the collision, but not on the collision energy or beam nuclei. These results are consistent with sound or shock wave models, but pose challenges to Cherenkov gluon radiation models.

Abstract: Emission source functions are extracted from correlation functions constructed from charged pions produced at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The source parameters extracted from these functions at low k(T) give first indications of a long tail for the pion emission source. The source extension cannot be explained solely by simple kinematic considerations. The possible role of a halo of secondary pions from resonance emissions is explored.

20. Measurement of direct photon production in p+p collisions at sqrt[s] = 200 GeV.

Abstract: Cross sections for midrapidity production of direct photons in p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are reported for transverse momenta of 3 < pT < 16 GeV/c. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (pQCD) describes the data well for pT >5 GeV/c, where the uncertainties of the measurement and theory are comparable. We also report on the effect of requiring the photons to be isolated from parton jet energy. The observed fraction of isolated photons is well described by pQCD for pT >7 GeV/c.

Abstract: Deuteron-gold (d+Au) collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider provide ideal platforms for testing QCD theories in dense nuclear matter at high energy. In particular, models suggesting strong saturation effects for partons carrying small nucleon momentum fraction (x) predict modifications to jet production at forward rapidity (deuteron-going direction) in d+Au collisions. We report on two-particle azimuthal angle correlations between charged hadrons at forward/backward (deuteron/gold going direction) rapidity and charged hadrons at midrapidity in d+Au and p+p collisions at square root of sNN=200 GeV. Jet structures observed in the correlations are quantified in terms of the conditional yield and angular width of away-side partners. The kinematic region studied here samples partons in the gold nucleus with x~0.1 to ~0.01. Within this range, we find no x dependence of the jet structure in d+Au collisions.

Abstract: Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of eta mesons have been measured within p(T) = 2-10 GeV/c at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment in Au + Au collisions at square root S(NN) = 200 GeV. In central Au+Au the eta yields are significantly suppressed compared to peripheral Au + Au, d + Au, and p + p yields scaled by the corresponding number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. The magnitude, centrality, and p(T) dependence of the suppression is common, within errors, for eta and pi0. The ratio of eta to pi0 spectra at high p(T) amounts to 0.40 < R(eta/pi)0 < 0.48 for the three systems, in agreement with the world average measured in hadronic and nuclear reactions and, at large scaled momentum, in e+e- collisions.

Abstract: The PHENIX experiment has measured midrapidity ([FORMULA: SEE TEXT]) transverse momentum spectra ([FORMULA: SEE TEXT]) of electrons as a function of centrality in Au+Au collisions at [FORMULA: SEE TEXT]. Contributions from photon conversions and from light hadron decays, mainly Dalitz decays of pi0 and eta mesons, were removed. The resulting nonphotonic electron spectra are primarily due to the semileptonic decays of hadrons carrying heavy quarks. Nuclear modification factors were determined by comparison to nonphotonic electrons in p+p collisions. A significant suppression of electrons at high pT is observed in central Au+Au collisions, indicating substantial energy loss of heavy quarks.

Abstract: The azimuthal distribution of identified pi0 and inclusive photons has been measured in [FORMULA: SEE TEXT] Au+Au collisions with the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). The second-harmonic parameter (nu2) was measured to describe the observed anisotropy of the azimuthal distribution. The measured inclusive photon is consistent with the value expected for the photons from hadron decay and is also consistent with the lack of direct photon signal over the measured pT range 1-6 GeV/c. An attempt is made to extract nu2 of direct photons.

Abstract: J/psi production in d + Au and p + p collisions at square root of S(NN) = 200 GeV has been measured by the PHENIX experiment at rapidities -2.2 < y < +2.4. The cross sections and nuclear dependence of J/psi production versus rapidity, transverse momentum, and centrality are obtained and compared to lower energy p + A results and to theoretical models. The observed nuclear dependence in d + Au collisions is found to be modest, suggesting that the absorption in the final state is weak and the shadowing of the gluon distributions is small and consistent with Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi-based parametrizations that fit deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan data at lower energies.

Abstract: Transverse single-spin asymmetries to probe the transverse-spin structure of the proton have been measured for neutral pions and nonidentified charged hadrons from polarized proton-proton collisions at midrapidity and square root(s) = 200 GeV. The data cover a transverse momentum (pT) range 1.0-5.0 GeV/c for neutral pions and 0.5-5.0 GeV/c for charged hadrons, at a Feynman-x value of approximately zero. The asymmetries seen in this previously unexplored kinematic region are consistent with zero within errors of a few percent. In addition, the inclusive charged hadron cross section at midrapidity from 0.5 < pT < 7.0 GeV/c is presented and compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations. Successful description of the unpolarized cross section above approximately 2 GeV/c suggests that pQCD is applicable in the interpretation of the asymmetry results in the relevant kinematic range.

Abstract: The first measurement of direct photons in Au + Au collisions at (square root)S(NN) = 200 GeV is presented. The direct photon signal is extracted as a function of the Au + Au collision centrality and compared to next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. The direct photon yield is shown to scale with the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions for all centralities.

Abstract: New measurements are presented for charged hadron azimuthal correlations at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at (square root)s(NN) = 62.4 and 200 GeV. They are compared to earlier measurements obtained at (square root)s(NN) = 130 GeV and in Pb + Pb collisions at (square root)s(NN) = 17.2 GeV. Sizeable anisotropies are observed with centrality and transverse momentum (pT) dependence characteristic of elliptic flow (upsilon2). For a broad range of centralities, the observed magnitudes and trends of the differential anisotropy, upsilon2(pT), change very little over the collision energy range (square root)s(NN) = 62-200 GeV, indicating saturation of the excitation function for upsilon2 at these energies. Such a saturation may be indicative of the dominance of a very soft equation of state for (square root)s(NN) approximately 60-200 GeV.

Abstract: Purpose: The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the fludarabine/cyclophosphamide combination in patients with relapsed chronic lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL) and low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and to assess the impact of adding granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) to this regimen in a randomized fashion., Patients and Methods: Thirty-four patients (CLL, n=16; low-grade NHL, n=18) were enrolled. The median number of previous treatments was 2. Patients received 6 months of previous therapy with an alkylating agent or had preexisting cytopenias received a 25% dose reduction. Twenty-two patients (65%) were randomized to receive GM-CSF. Patients completed a median of 5 cycles of treatment (range, 1-6 cycles). Twenty-seven patients (80%) received >or=3 cycles of treatment and were evaluated for response., Results: Seven patients (26%) exhibited a complete response; 6 of the 7 had low-grade NHL. Fourteen patients (52%) exhibited a partial response, and 6 patients (22%) had stable disease. Notably, 6 of the 7 patients who exhibited complete response and 9 of 14 patients with partial responses were randomized to the GM-CSF arm. The duration of response ranged from 4 months to 26 months. The toxicities were mainly hematologic. Nineteen patients (70%) experienced >or=1 episode of grade 3/4 neutropenia, but only 4 (15%) experienced febrile neutropenia; 3 of those patients were assigned to the GM-CSF arm., Conclusions: The combination of fludarabine and cyclophosphamide is a well-tolerated and effective treatment regimen for patients with relapsed CLL and low-grade NHL. A higher percentage of complete responses were noted in patients with low-grade NHL compared with patients with CLL. Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor did not seem to decrease the incidence of febrile neutropenia. However, the higher number of complete and partial responses noted on the GM-CSF arm is intriguing and warrants further investigation.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the double longitudinal spin asymmetry in inclusive pi(0) production in polarized proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV. The data were taken at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider with average beam polarizations of 0.27. The measurements are the first in a program to study the longitudinal spin structure of the proton, using strongly interacting probes, at collider energies. The asymmetry is presented for transverse momenta 1-5 GeV/c at midrapidity, where next-to-leading-order perturbative quantum chromodynamic (NLO pQCD) calculations well describe the unpolarized cross section. The observed asymmetry is small and is compared to a NLO pQCD calculation with a range of polarized gluon distributions.

Abstract: Bose-Einstein correlations of identically charged pion pairs were measured by the PHENIX experiment at midrapidity in Au + Au collisions at square root s(NN)=200 GeV. The Bertsch-Pratt radius parameters were determined as a function of the transverse momentum of the pair and as a function of the centrality of the collision. Using the standard core-halo partial Coulomb fits, and a new parametrization which constrains the Coulomb fraction as determined from the unlike-sign pion correlation, the ratio R(out)/R(side) is within 0.8-1.1 for 0.25< <1.2 GeV/c. The centrality dependence of all radii is well described by a linear scaling in N(1/3)(part), and R(out)/R(side) for approximately 0.45 GeV/c is approximately constant at unity as a function of centrality.

Abstract: Event-by-event fluctuations of the average transverse momentum of produced particles near midrapidity have been measured by the PHENIX Collaboration in square root of (sNN)=200 GeV Au+Au, and p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The fluctuations are observed to be in excess of the expectation for statistically independent particle emission for all centralities. The excess fluctuations exhibit a dependence on both the centrality of the collision and on the pT range over which the average is calculated. Both the centrality and pT dependence can be well reproduced by a simulation of random particle production with the addition of contributions from hard-scattering processes.

Abstract: J/psi production has been measured in proton-proton collisions at square root of s=200 GeV over a wide rapidity and transverse momentum range by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Distributions of the rapidity and transverse momentum, along with measurements of the mean transverse momentum and total production cross section are presented and compared to available theoretical calculations. The total J/psi cross section is 4.0+/-0.6(stat)+/-0.6(syst)+/-0.4(abs) mu b. The mean transverse momentum is 1.80+/-0.23(stat)+/-0.16(syst) GeV/c.

Abstract: The anisotropy parameter (v(2)), the second harmonic of the azimuthal particle distribution, has been measured with the PHENIX detector in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV for identified and inclusive charged particle production at central rapidities (|eta|<0.35) with respect to the reaction plane defined at high rapidities (|eta|=3-4 ). We observe that the v(2) of mesons falls below that of (anti)baryons for p(T)>2 GeV/c, in marked contrast to the predictions of a hydrodynamical model. A quark-coalescence model is also investigated.

Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra of charged hadrons with p(T)<8 GeV/c and neutral pions with p(T)<10 GeV/c have been measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at BNL RHIC in d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The measured yields are compared to those in p+p collisions at the same sqrt[s(NN)] scaled up by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon collisions in d+Au. The yield ratio does not show the suppression observed in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Instead, there is a small enhancement in the yield of high momentum particles.

Abstract: Two-particle azimuthal correlation functions are presented for charged hadrons produced in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (sqrt [s(NN)]=130 GeV). The measurements permit determination of elliptic flow without event-by-event estimation of the reaction plane. The extracted elliptic flow values (v2) show significant sensitivity to both the collision centrality and the transverse momenta of emitted hadrons, suggesting rapid thermalization and relatively strong velocity fields. When scaled by the eccentricity of the collision zone epsilon, the scaled elliptic flow shows little or no dependence on centrality for charged hadrons with relatively low p(T). A breakdown of this epsilon scaling is observed for charged hadrons with pT >1.0 GeV/c.

Abstract: We present results on the measurement of Lambda and Lambda(macro) production in Au+Au collisions at square root of (S (NN) = 130 GeV with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The transverse momentum spectra were measured for minimum bias and for the 5% most central events. The Lambda;/Lambda ratios are constant as a function of p(T) and the number of participants. The measured net Lambda density is significantly larger than predicted by models based on hadronic strings (e.g., HIJING) but in approximate agreement with models which include the gluon-junction mechanism.

Abstract: Data from Au + Au interactions at sqrt[s(NN)]=130 GeV, obtained with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, are used to investigate local net charge fluctuations among particles produced near midrapidity. According to recent suggestions, such fluctuations may carry information from the quark-gluon plasma. This analysis shows that the fluctuations are dominated by a stochastic distribution of particles, but are also sensitive to other effects, like global charge conservation and resonance decays.

Abstract: Identified pi(+/-), K(+/-), p, and (-)p transverse momentum spectra at midrapidity in sqrt[s(NN)] = 130 GeV Au+Au collisions were measured by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC as a function of collision centrality. Average transverse momenta increase with the number of participating nucleons in a similar way for all particle species. Within errors, all midrapidity particle yields per participant are found to be increasing with the number of participating nucleons. There is an indication that K(+/-), p, and (-)p yields per participant increase faster than the pi(+/-) yields. In central collisions at high transverse momenta (p(T) > or =2 GeV/c), (-)p and p yields are comparable to the pi(+/-) yields.

Abstract: Two-pion correlations in square root[s(NN)] = 130 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC have been measured over a broad range of pair transverse momentum k(T) by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. The k(T) dependent transverse radii are similar to results from heavy-ion collisions at square root[s(NN)] = 4.1, 4.9, and 17.3 GeV, whereas the longitudinal radius increases monotonically with beam energy. The ratio of the outwards to sidewards transverse radii (R(out)/R(side)) is consistent with unity and independent of k(T).

Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra of electrons from Au+Au collisions at square root[s(NN)] = 130 GeV have been measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The spectra show an excess above the background from photon conversions and light hadron decays. The electron signal is consistent with that expected from semileptonic decays of charm. The yield of the electron signal dN(e)/dy for p(T) > 0.8 GeV/c is 0.025+/-0.004(stat)+/-0.010(syst) in central collisions, and the corresponding charm cross section is 380+/-60(stat)+/-200(syst) microb per binary nucleon-nucleon collision.
