Calculations of the particle size number distribution resulting from emulsion polymerization have been carried out for a model of the system used previously by the authors. The sum of the lifetimes of the growing molecules which a particle has contained, is used as the measure of its size. The resulting curves indicate an increase in the breadth of the distribution with increasing time. Es werden Berechnungen der Verteilung der bei Emulsionspolymerisationen entstehenden Teilchengrosen nach einem von den Autoren schon vorher verwendeten Reaktionsmodell durchgefuhrt. Die Summe der Lebensdauer der wachsenden Molekule, die ein Teilchen enthalt, wird als Mas fur seine Grose gebraucht. Die entstehenden Kurven zeigen eine Verbreiterung der Verteilung mit zunehmender Zeit.

The specific refractive index increments of a number of polymer/solvent systems have been measured by means of an interference refractometer. The technique described permits rapid and precise evaluation of dn/dc, as well as eliminating the difficulties normally associated with interferometric measurements in organic solvents. Die spezifischen Brechungsindex-Inkremente fur einige Polymer/Losungsmittel-Systeme wurden mit Hilfe des Interferenzrefraktometers gemessen. Die beschriebene Mestechnik erlaubt schnelle und genaue Auswertung von dn/dc und eliminiert die Schwierigkeiten, welche normalerweise mit interferometrischen Messungen in organischen Losungsmitteln verbunden sind.

The theory of HARKINS, SMITH and EWART, describing the formation of latex particles in the emulsion polymerization system is used, to describe the average degree of polymerization of the formed polymer. Transfer reactions are assumed to be negligible. The average lifetime t of growing polymer radicals – to which the average degree of polymerization is proportional – is found to be where x = ρt/N is the dimensionless variable representing the average number of radicals created per latex particles by time t. ρ is the constant rate of production of radicals, N is the number of latex particles at the time of disappearance of micelles. Basierend auf der Theorie von HARKINS, SMITH und EWART, welche die Bildung von Latexteilchen wahrend der Ermulsionspolymerisation quantitativ beschreibt, wird der mittlere Polymerisationsgrad abgeleitet. Ubertragungsreaktionen werden als nicht vorhanden angenommen. Calculations of the polymer molecular weight distribution are carried out using a model of emulsion polymerization, which fundamentally derives from the early work of HARKINS, and which, in its general features, is to-day accepted. The distributions are actually presented as functions of the kinetic chain lifetime and time of reaction, although, under certain assumptions set out in the following work, the lifetime is directly proportional to the molecular weight. Es werden Berechnungen der Molekulargewichtsverteilung nach einem heute allgemein akzeptierten Emulsionspolymerisationsmodell durchgefuhrt, welches sich von einer fruheren Arbeit HARKINS ableitet. Die Verteilung wird als Funktion der Lebensdauer der kinetischen Kette und der Reaktionszeit dargestellt, obwohl die Lebensdauer unter bestimmten in dieser Arbeit genannten Voraussetzungen dem Molekulargewicht direkt proportional ist.

The polymerization of methyl acrylate in aqueous cationic soap solutions has been examined. The rate of polymerization was found to pass through a minimum with increasing soap concentration. The inhibition period increases considerably with increase in soap concentration. The charge on the latex particles was changed from negative to positive. The latexes of low charge were quite unstable and these systems showed the slowest rate of polymerization. Either the polymerization rate constant in solution is considerably higher than in bulk, or the decomposition of peroxydisulphate in the presence of monomer is increased. Transfer reactions play an important rǒle in the polymerization.

The kinetics of polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by iron(III) salts and hydrogen peroxide in water solution in an atmosphere of nitrogen containing varying amounts of oxygen was investigated at 26.0 ± 0.1°C. Increased amounts of oxygen decrease the rate of polymerization as well as the average molecular weight of the formed polymer. The rate of polymerization falls to zero with the increasing content of oxygen. There is, however, no difference in the rate of polymerization or the molecular weight of the formed polymer if the oxygen content of the nitrogen was decreased by careful deoxygenation from 13.5 ppm to less than 1 ppm. The length of the induction period is in agreement with the inhibition scheme as proposed by SCHULZ and HENRICI. Die Reaktion wurde in einer Stickstoffatmosphare mit wechselndem Gehalt an Sauerstoff durchgefuhrt. Erhohung des Sauerstoffgehaltes vermindert die Geschwindigkeit der Polymerisation und auch das mittlere Molekulargewicht des gebildeten Polymeren. Bei Erhohung der Sauerstoffmenge in der Gasphase fallt die Geschwindigkeit der Polymerisation auf Null. Es erfolgt jedoch keine Anderung mehr, weder in der Geschwindigkeit der Polymerisation noch im Molekulargewicht des gebildeten Polymeren, wenn der Sauerstoffgehalt im Stickstoff von 13,5 ppm auf weniger als 1 ppm erniedrigt wird. Die Lange der Induktionsperiode entspricht dem von SCHULZ und HENRICT vorgeschlagenen Schema.

It is shown in this paper that the rate of polymerization of acrylonitrile in aqueous solution is lowered by the action of (i) a centrifugal field and (ii) stirring. The experimental results agree with the assumption of simultaneous occurrence of homogeneous and heterogeneous polymerization reactions. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird gezeigt, das die Geschwindigkeit der Polymerisation von Acrylnitril in wasseriger Losung sowohl im Zentrifugalfeld als auch beim Ruhren herabgesetzt wird. Die experimentellen Ergebnisse konnen durch die Annahme des gleichzeitigen Verlaufes von homogener und heterogener Polymerisationsreaktion erklart werden.

The influence of various soaps and monomers on the rate of thermal decomposition of potassium peroxydisulphate has been investigated. It was found that all investigated compounds, except a fully fluorinated soap caused marked increases in the rate or peroxydisulphate disappearance. This finding should be considered in studies on the kinetics of polymerization in which peroxydisulphate is the initiator. Es warde der Einflus von verschiedene. The polymerization of methyl acrylate in water and in dilute, aqueous, soap solutions, initiated by potassium peroxydisulfate, has been investigated, a dilatometric method being used to follow the conversion. It has been shown that small amounts of an anionic soap increase the rate of reaction while a cationic soap has the reverse effect. The change of molecular weight with conversion has also been examined as well as the effect of the exclusion of oxygen from the system.

The theory of SMITH and EWART, which describes the formation of latex particles in the emulsion polymerization system, is extended by deriving equations for the rate of change of micellar and latex particle numbers. In one case given, these equations can be integrated in closed form, but in most cases, the solutions must be found by numerical computation. The overall aim is to derive an expression for the number of reaction loci which is in terms of variables easily specified by experimental conditions – such as emulsifier and initiator content, and which predicts the number of reacting particles to be one half the total number of particles at the time when particle production ceases. This aim is attained in a limited way only, in so far as the expression sought cannot be furnished in analytic form. Das Ziel ist die Ableitung von Gleichungen fur die Anzahl der Reaktionszentren, ausgedruckt durch experimentelle Veranderliche, welche durch Versuchsbedingungen leicht zu spezifizieren sind – wie die Emulgator- und Initiatorkonzentrationen. Auserdem mussen diese Gleichungen die Aussage enthalten, das die Zahl der reaktionsfahigen Teilchen zu dem Zeitpunkt, in dem die Teilchenneubildung aufhort, genau die Halfte der Gesamtteilchenzahl ist. Dieses Ziel ist nur in beschranktem Mase erreicht worden, insofern, als die erstrebten Gleichungen nicht in analytischer Form erhalten werden konnten.
