The present study aimed to evaluate root cortical aerenchyma formation in response to Cd-driven hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production and the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the alleviation of Cd oxidative stress in maize roots and its effects on aerenchyma development. Maize plants were subjected to continuous flooding for 30 days, and the following treatments were applied weekly: Cd(NO3)2 at 0, 10, and 50 ?M and Na2[Fe(CN)5NO]2H2O (an NO donor) at 0.5, 0.1, and 0.2 ?M. The root biometrics; oxidative stress indicators H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA); and activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were analyzed. The root dry and fresh masses decreased at higher concentrations of NO and Cd. H2O2 also decreased at higher NO concentrations; however, MDA increased only at higher Cd levels. SOD activity decreased at higher concentrations of NO, but CAT activity increased. Aerenchyma development decreased in response to NO. Consequently, NO acts as an antagonist to Cd, decreasing the concentration of H2O2 by reducing SOD activity and increasing CAT activity. We compared three Pi-efficient (ATF-14B, ATF-53B, 101B) and four Pi-inefficient (ATF-16B, 116R, 136B, 187R) sorghum genotypes under different Pi concentrations. There were no significant differences between the groups in Pi-use efficiency under Pi-deprivation for anthocyanin accumulation, dry-weight matter, acid phosphatase activity (APA), and aerenchyma formation. However, both groups showed anthocyanin accumulation under Pi-deprivation. Under Pi-deficiency, there was a significant reduction of dry weight in both groups, with no significant differences between contrasting genotypes. All genotypes exhibited a significant increase in root/shoot ratios during Pi-deficiency, and these changes were not related to Pi-use efficiency. The total Pi content in roots and shoots in all genotypes was similar and represented less than 0.2 % of the total dry weight. For all genotypes, the Pi content in P+ treatment resulted in a significant variation ranging from 0.45 to 0.85% and 0.41 to 0.66% in roots and shoots, respectively. The genotype 187R had the highest P content in roots and shoots. APA activity showed increased activity only in the roots of both groups. The development of aerenchyma was conspicuous in the basal and in the middle root sections of all genotypes grown under different Pi levels. Two sorghum Pi-transporter genes were strongly overexpressed in the middle part of Pi-deprived roots of 136B genotype. We did not find differences that explain the Pi-use efficiency between efficient and inefficient genotypes. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES The cultivation of irrigated rice is an important source of greenhouse gases emission. Among the main greenhouse gases are the area of rice are methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), which vary depending on crop management and irrigation management. The study of irrigation and cultivar management is of great importance as an alternative to increase productivity and grain quality without increasing planted area and water consumption. Rice plants have structures called aerenchyma, which mainly serve to oxidize the root system, but through these structures also the passage of other gases such as CH4 and N2O occurs. In this sense, the present study had as objective to quantify CH4 and N2O emissions, components of yield, grain quality, yield, morphological characteristics, partial global warming potential (pGWP) and index pGWP/grain yield (Yield-scaled) of rice cultivars under permanent irrigation and intermittent irrigation. In view of this, this thesis was structured in four chapters. Chapter 1 is a literature review entitled "Production, emission and methane mitigation measures in irrigated rice crops". The chapter 2 addresses the emission of CH4 and N2O, yield, global warming potential and global warming potential index for grain yield from areas of irrigated rice under the heading "Greenhouse gas emissions and global warming potential of rice cultivars under irrigation management". The chapter 3 deals with the morphological characteristics of the aerial part (number and diameter of stems and stature) of rice plants, as well as their internal structures (number, area and volume of aerenchyma and area and volume of the fistula) and dry mass production, this chapter is entitled "Structural characteristics of rice cultivars under irrigation management". The chapter 4 deals with the number of panicles per m2, the number of grains per panicles, the mass of a thousand grains, income of the benefit and on the physical characteristics of the grains (whole grains, plaster and white belly) and is titled "Performance components and grain quality of rice cultivars under irrigation management". From the results obtained, it was concluded that the cultivar XP 113 emits less methane and nitrous oxide, in addition to presenting higher grain yield, which guarantees, together with the cultivar Titan CL, lower Partial Global Warming Potential and lower pGWP/Grain Productivity. Intermittent irrigation, combined with low rainfall, adversely affects grain yield of rice, but results in lower methane emissions, pGWP and pGWP/GY. There is no difference in the emission of nitrous oxide as a function of irrigation management. The cultivar XP 113 shows a lower area and volume of aerenchyma, as well as a lower number of stems per m2 and dry mass of the aerial part, while the cultivar Lexus CL presents higher dry mass of aerial part, area and volume of aerenchyma and area and volume of fistula. There is a reduction in leaf area index when the rice plants are submitted to intermittent irrigation management in all cultivars, except for cultivar XP 113. The management of intermittent irrigation reduces plant height, shoot dry mass, area of aerenquimous and fistula) and volume (of aerenquimous and fistula). The cultivar IRGA 424 RI has a lower percentage of the cast area, of a thousand grain mass and of grains per panicle in relation to the other cultivars. The cultivars IRGA 424 RI and Titan CL have a higher percentage of whole grains. The cultivar XP 113 has a higher number of grains per panicle. Cultivars XP 113 and IRGA 424 RI have a lower percentage of grains and white belly. The management of intermittent irrigation does not reduce the sterility of spikelets, mass of a thousand grains, number of panicles per m2 and grain quality. O cultivo de arroz irrigado é uma importante fonte de emissão de gases de efeito estufa. Entre os principais gases de efeito estufa em área de arroz são o metano (CH4) e óxido nitroso (N2O), os quais variam em função do manejo da cultivar e do manejo da irrigação. O estudo de manejos da irrigação e de cultivares é de grande importância por servirem de alternativa para aumento de produtividade e qualidade de grãos sem aumento de área plantada e do consumo de água. As plantas de arroz possuem estruturas, denominadas de aerênquimas, que servem principalmente para a oxidação do sistema radicular, porém por meio dessas estruturas também ocorre a passagem de outros gases, como o CH4 e o N2O. Nesse sentido, o presente estudo teve como objetivo quantificar as emissões de CH4 e N2O, componentes de rendimento, qualidade de grãos, produtividade, características morfológicas, potencial de aquecimento global parcial (PAGp) e índice de PAGp/Rendimento de Grãos de cultivares de arroz sob irrigação permanente e irrigação intermitente. Diante disto, a presente tese foi estruturada em quatro capítulos. O capítulo 1 é uma revisão de literatura intitulada de “Produção, emissão e medidas mitigatórias de metano em lavouras de arroz irrigado”. O capítulo 2 aborda a emissão de CH4 e N2O, a produtividade, o potencial de aquecimento global e o índice de potencial de aquecimento global por produtividade de grãos a partir de áreas de arroz irrigado, com o título de “Emissão de gases de efeito estufa e potencial de aquecimento global de cultivares de arroz sob manejos de irrigação”. O capítulo 3 aborda sobre as características morfológicas da parte aérea (número e diâmetro de colmos e estatura) de plantas de arroz, bem como suas estruturas internas (número, área e volume de aerênquimas e área e volume da fístula) e produção de massa seca, esse capítulo é intitulado como “Características estruturais de cultivares de arroz sob manejos de irrigação”. O capítulo 4 aborda sobre o número de panículas por m2, o número de grãos por panículas, a massa de mil grãos, renda do benefício e sobre as características físicas dos grãos (grãos inteiros, gessados e barriga branca), e está intitulado de “Componentes de rendimento e qualidade de grão de cultivares de arroz sob manejos de irrigação”. A partir dos resultados obtidos concluiu-se que a cultivar XP 113 emite menos metano e óxido nitroso, além de apresentar maior produtividade de grãos, o que garante, juntamente com a cultivar Titan CL menor Potencial de Aquecimento Global parcial e menor índice de PAGp/Produtividade de Grãos. A irrigação intermitente, combinado com baixas precipitações, afeta negativamente a produtividade de grãos do arroz, porém resulta em menor emissão de metano, PAGp e PAGp/PG. Não há diferença na emissão de óxido nitroso em função do manejo de irrigação. A cultivar XP 113 apresenta menor área e volume de aerênquimas, bem como menor número de colmos por m2 e massa seca da parte aérea, enquanto a cultivar Lexus CL apresenta maior massa seca da parte aérea, área e volume de aerênquimas e área e volume da fístula. Há redução do índice de área foliar quando as plantas de arroz são submetidas ao manejo de irrigação intermitente em todas as cultivares, com excessão da cultivar XP 113. O manejo da irrigação intermitente reduz a estatura de plantas, massa seca da parte aérea, área (de aerênquimas e da fístula) e volume (de aerênquimas e da fístula). A cultivar IRGA 424 RI possui menor porcentagem de área gessada, de massa de mil grãos e de grãos por panícula em relação as demais cultivares. As cultivares IRGA 424 RI e Titan CL possuem maior porcentagem de grãos inteiros. A cultivar XP 113 possui maior número de grãos por panículas. As cultivares XP 113 e IRGA 424 RI possuem menor porcentagem de grãos gessados e barriga branca. O manejo da irrigação intermitente não reduz a esterilidade de espiguetas, massa de mil grãos, número de panículas por m2 e qualidade de grãos.

Water supply is the main yield-limiting factor of oil palm crops. A water deficit affects virtually all aspects of metabolism and plant structure, while a water excess leads to waterlogging, an abiotic stress that affects crop production because of a reduction of oxygen in the soil. To determine the effect of water stress on the physiology of oil palms (Elaeis guineensis) during the nursery stage, clones from three em-bryogenic lines of three different ortets (LE 33-7, LE 28-59 and LE 16-79) were subjected to four water conditions (moderate deficit, field capacity, partial and continuous waterlogging) for 60 days under a completely randomized split-plot design with four replications. The gas exchange, vegetative growth and nutrient content variables were evaluated. There was no interaction between the water conditions and embryogenic lines for any variable. The moderate water-deficit stress significantly reduced the stomatic conductance, photosynthesis, transpiration and growth. Under waterlogged conditions, the seedlings developed root aerenchyma and pneumatophores as adaptation mechanisms, and their gas exchange or their micronutrient reduction and assimilation processes (with the exception of copper) were not affected. However, under permanent waterlogging, the seedlings had poor growth because of higher leaf respiration rates and probably pneumatophore maintenance and imitations in the absorption and transport of macronutrients. while the plants under partial waterlogging exhibited a growth pattern similar to that observed under optimal soil moisture conditions. El suministro de agua es el principal factor limitante del rendimiento de la palma de aceite. El déficit afecta prácticamente a todos los aspectos del metabolismo y estructura de la planta, mientras que el exceso de agua conlleva al anegamiento, un estrés que condiciona la producción de cultivos debido a la reducción del oxígeno en el suelo. Con el fin de determinar el efecto del estrés hídrico sobre la fisiología de la palma de aceite (Elaeis guineensis) en etapa de vivero, clones provenientes de tres líneas embriogénicas de tres ortets diferentes (LE 33-7, LE 28-59 y LE 16-79) se sometieron a cuatro condiciones hídricas (déficit moderado, capacidad de campo, anegamiento parcial y permanente), durante 60 días, bajo un diseño completamente aleatorizado en arreglo de parcelas divididas con cuatro repeticiones. Variables de intercambio gaseoso, crecimiento vegetativo y contenido nutricional fueron evaluadas. No hubo interacción entre las condiciones de humedad y las líneas embriogénicas para ninguna variable. El déficit hídrico moderado redujo significativamente la fotosíntesis, la transpiración y el crecimiento. Bajo condiciones de anegamiento, las plantas desarrollaron neumatóforos y aerénquima radical como mecanismos de adaptación, por lo que no afectaron su intercambio gaseoso ni los procesos de reducción y asimilación de micronutrientes (con excepción del cobre). Sin embargo, bajo anegamiento permanente, mostraron un reducido crecimiento, debido a las mayores tasas de respiración foliar y probablemente al mantenimiento de los neumatóforos, y a las limitaciones en la absorción y transporte de macronutrientes, mientras que las plantas sometidas a un anegamiento parcial exhibieron un crecimiento similar al registrado bajo condiciones óptimas de humedad edáfica.

Essa zonação ecológica reflete os graus de adaptação que as plantas apresentam para tolerar o alagamento ou a dessecação. O presente trabalho visou apresentar a análise morfoanatômica de cinco espécies de Cyperaceae encontradas em diferentes zonas no entorno da represa Alagados, em Ponta Grossa-PR, Brasil: Cyperus giganteus, Rhynchospora corymbosa var. aspérula, Cyperus densicaespitosus, Cyperus rigens e Eleocharis sp. Estruturas caulinares e foliares das cinco espécies de Cyperaceae foram analisadas a partir de cortes histológicos. Concluiu-se que, das cinco plantas analisadas, somente três caracterizam-se como plantas aquáticas, sendo duas classificadas como plantas emergentes e uma como submersa fixa devido às características adaptativas que apresentam para obter sucesso nesse ambiente. In the aquatic ecosystem there is gradient moisture in the soil that interferes directly in the occupation of species on the margin of the water blade. This ecological zone reflects the degrees of adaptation that plants present to tolerate flooding or drying. This work aimed to present a morphological and anatomical analysis of five species of Cyperaceae, found at different zones in the surroundings of the Alagados Dam, in Ponta Grossa-PR, Brazil: Cyperus giganteus and Rhynchospora corymbosa var. asperula, Cyperus densicaespitosus, Cyperus rigens and Eleocharis sp. Stem and foliar structures of five species of Cyperaceae were analyzed by histological cross-section. It was concluded that of the five plants examined, only three are aquatic plants, with two being classified as emerging plants and one as fixed submerged, based on the adaptive characteristics they present to succeed in this environment. The objective of this work was to characterize the morphoanatomy of roots and the yield traits of two corn hybrids contrasting for drought tolerance (DKB 390, tolerant; and BRS 1030, sensitive), at different stages of development. Water deficit was imposed for ten days, in a greenhouse, at three growth stages: V5, VT, and R3. These treatments were combined to generate cumulative stress during the plant cycle, as: V5VT, V5R3, VTR3, and V5VTR3. The following were analyzed: root anatomy; proportion of aerenchyma in the cortex; metaxylem number and diameter; phloem thickness; as well as morphological characteristics, such as root length, volume, and surface area, specific root length, length of fine roots, grain yield, and ear length and diameter. Development stage affected the responses to stress: DKB 390 showed the best performance for root morphoanatomy and yield traits, under drought stress, at the reproductive stages, mainly R3, and in the treatments with cumulative stress, especially V5VTR3; whereas BRS 1030 presented higher means for the studied parameters, mainly at the V5 and VT stages, but did not show a higher grain yield under water stress. The greater tolerance of the DKB 390 hybrid to water deficit is probably linked with a memory of pre-exposure to water stress at different growth stages. Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar a morfoanatomia radicular e os atributos de rendimento de dois híbridos de milho contrastantes quanto à seca (DKB 390, tolerante; e BRS 1030, sensível), em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento. A deficiência hídrica foi imposta por dez dias, em casa de vegetação, em três estádios de desenvolvimento: V5, VT e R3. Esses tratamentos foram combinados para gerar estresses acumulativos durante o ciclo da planta, como: V5VT, V5R3, VTR3 e V5VTR3. Foram analisados: anatomia radicular; proporção de aerênquima no cortex; número e diâmetro de metaxilema; espessura do floema; bem como características morfológicas, como comprimento, volume e área de superfície radicular, comprimento específico das raízes, comprimento de raízes finas, rendimento de grãos, e comprimento e diâmetro da espiga. O estádio de desenvolvimento influenciou as respostas ao estresse: DKB 390 apresentou o melhor desempenho quanto à morfoanatomia radicular e aos atributos de rendimento, quando submetido a estresse hídrico, nos estádios reprodutivos, sobretudo em R3, e nos tratamentos acumulativos de estresse, principalmente no V5VTR3; enquanto BRS 1030 apresentou as maiores médias para os parâmetros estudados, principalmente nos estádios V5 e VT, mas não apresentou maior rendimento de grãos sob estresse hídrico. A maior tolerância do híbrido DKB 390 ao estresse hídrico provavelmente relaciona-se à memória de exposição prévia ao estresse hídrico em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento.

O aerênquima é um tecido vegetal com grandes lacunas de ar que podem ter função de circulação de gases e/ou sustentação de órgãos, estando presente nas raízes e órgãos aéreos de plantas aquáticas ou sob alagamento, podendo ainda ser formado em decorrência de algum estresse. Ceratopteris richardii é uma planta aquática, de hábito anfíbio que apresenta aerênquima em seus órgãos vegetativos. Dessa forma, esse trabalho buscou analisar a formação de aerênquima nas raízes e pecíolo desta espécie frente a uma situação de restrição hídrica e verificar sua plasticidade fenotípica. Vinte indivíduos de C. richardii foram cultivados e submetidos a um tratamento com diferentes concentrações de PEG 6000. Em todas as amostras analisadas, foi observada a formação de aerênquima. A análise qualitativa mostrou diferença entre os tratamentos, porém, a análise estatística revelou que as diferenças não são significativas para o número amostral empregado. Variações de crescimento do esporófito revelaram que a espécie de estudo modificou algumas características de desenvolvimento em resposta a restrição hídrica. Tais resultados revelam importantes características para esta espécie, que parece aclimatar-se a situação de estresse a qual foi submetida. Com base nisso, sugere-se ampliar estes estudos para elucidar questões relacionadas a formação de aerênquima e o ambiente, seja para esta espécie ou de outro grupo taxonômico. Aerenchyma is a plant tissue with large air gaps that may have gas circulation function and / or sustain organs. This structure is present in roots and aerial organs of water plants and in plants under flooding it may also be formed during some stress. Ceratopteris richardii is an aquatic plant, with amphibious habit that has aerenchyma in their vegetative organs. Thus, the aim of this study is analyze the aerenchyma formation in roots and stem of this specie under water restriction situation and verify their phenotypic plasticity. Twenty specimen of C. richardii were cultured and subjected to treatment with different concentrations of PEG 6000. In all samples, were observed aerenchyma formation. Qualitative analysis showed differences among treatments, however, the statistical analysis revealed that the differences are not significant for the sample size. Sporophyte growth variations revealed that the specie of study modified some growth characteristics in response to water restriction. These results reveal important characteristics for C. richardii, which seems to acclimatize the stress situation which has submitted. On the base that, it is suggested further studies to become clearer the relation between aerenchyma formation and environment, even to either this species or another taxonomic group.

Visando contribuir para o conhecimento das estratégias de tolerância de espécies arbóreas à hipoxia, os efeitos do alagamento em plantas de Lithraea molleoides foram estudados. Indivíduos jovens foram mantidos em condições de solo drenado e alagado por 35 dias. Para as análises de crescimento e desenvolvimento, o comprimento e diâmetro do caule e raiz principal e o peso seco de raízes, caule e folhas foram medidos. Para os estudos anatômicos, foram realizados cortes de material fresco e fixado, de acordo com técnicas usuais em anatomia vegetal. As plantas alagadas apresentaram menor massa seca sem, contudo, ocorrer morte de raízes ou abscisão de folhas. Observou-se maior volume de espaços intercelulares nas raízes secundárias e na base dos caules dessas plantas, sendo que a última região apresentou lenticelas hipertrofiadas. As plantas alagadas apresentaram menor teor de amido na base do caule e menor investimento em estruturas secretoras. Sugere-se que o alagamento provocou redução na alocação de recursos para crescimento, os quais foram utilizados na produção de alterações morfológicas, como lenticelas hipertrofiadas e aumento dos espaços intercelulares. Essas alterações contribuíram para a sobrevivência das plantas durante o período de estresse, possivelmente por manter a respiração aeróbiaFlooding effects in Lithraea molleoides plants were studied. Young plants were kept under drained and flooded soil over a period of 35 days. For growth and development analyses, the length and diameter of stem and main root and the dry weight of roots, stem, and leaves were measured. For anatomical studies, sections of fresh and fixed roots, stem bases and leaves were made using standard procedures in vegetal anatomy. The stress reduced the dry weight increment of plants without causing the death of roots or the abscission of leaves. In the stem base, flooding induced the hypertrophy of lenticels and the increase of intercellular space and reduction lower starch contents, in the cortex. Plants flooded displayed greater percentage of cortical intercellular space in the secondary roots and lower investment in secretory structure formation in the stem base. It can be suggested that flooding reduced the recourses allocation to growth. These recourses could be used in morphological alterations, such as hypertrophied lenticels and increase of intercellular spaces, that could contribute to plants survival during stress period, probably, due maintenance of aerobic respiration.

Himatanthus sucuuba é uma espécie que coloniza as várzeas na Amazônia Central. O objetivo desse trabalho foi estudar as estratégias de adaptação da planta ao alagamento prolongado dessas áreas. Para tanto, foram acompanhados a germinação das sementes e o desenvolvimento das plântulas, simulando as condições naturais de campo (seca e alagamento). A germinação foi realizada em dois substratos: areia+serragem (não-alagado), e em água (alagado). Durante 120 dias, as plântulas geradas foram submetidas a três tratamentos: controle (irrigação diária), submersão parcial (sistema radicular) e submersão total. Foram analisadas as alterações na morfologia das plântulas, na anatomia das raízes e a atividade da enzima álcool desidrogenase (ADH), nos tempos: 0, 15, 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias. Foi constatado que a espécie apresenta elevada taxa de germinação e produção de plântulas, ambas acima de 80%, mesmo para sementes em água. Sob submersão parcial foram formadas lenticelas hipertrofiadas, raízes adventícias e aerênquima radicular. A atividade da ADH se manteve elevada até o 60º dia, com decréscimo após esse período. Plântulas sob submersão total perderam as folhas, não formaram raízes adventícias ou lenticelas, mas desenvolveram aerênquima. Estas plântulas apresentaram os maiores valores da ADH, que permaneceram altos até o término do experimento, indicando o desvio do metabolismo anaeróbico para produção de etanol como principal via para a manutenção da carga energética. Apesar de ter ocorrido a morte de algumas plântulas no tratamento de submersão total, o percentual de sobreviventes foi alto com 70% ao final dos 120 dias de duração do período experimental. Desta maneira, as plântulas de H. sucuuba modulam morfo-fisiologicamente a tolerância ao alagamento em função do tempo de exposição ao estresse e altura da coluna de água. Himatanthus sucuuba is a tree which colonizes the varzeas of Central Amazonia. The present work was carried out in order to analyze the adaptive strategies of the species to cope with the long periods of flooding common in the várzea. Seeds were accompanied from germination until the seedling stage, in experimental conditions simulating natural field conditions (terrestrial phase and flooding period). Germination was tested in two substrates: sand + sawdust (only irrigated), and in water (submergence). The seedlings produced were then subjected, for 120 days, to three treatments: control (daily irrigation), partial submersion (root system) and total submersion (whole seedling). Alterations in the morphology of seedlings and in root anatomy were examined, together with the activity of the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) 0, 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 days after the start of the treatments. Irrespective of the flooding regime, germination rates and seedling formation were high, both above 80%. Under partial submersion, hypertrophic lenticels, adventitious roots and aerenchyma were formed in the roots while ADH activity remained high until the 60th day of flooding, declining afterwards. Seedlings under total submersion lost all leaves, did not form adventitious roots or lenticels, but developed aerenchyma. These seedlings showed the highest values of ADH, which remained high until the end of the experiment, indicating the diversion of the aerobic metabolism to the production of ethanol as the main pathway to maintain the energetic balance. Although some totally submersed seedlings died, 70% of them survived the 120 days of flooding. Seedlings of H. sucuuba modulate morpho-physiologically the tolerance to flooding according to the time of exposure to the stress and the height of the water column.

As folhas basais forneceram seis caracteres úteis na distinção de M. macrophylla e M. pycnostachya, já que não ocorrem em M. sylvatica. seguidas das folhas basais. O arranjo do mesofilo das brácteas involucrais suporta a circunscrição de M. macrophylla e M. pycnostachya em M. sect. Pycnocephala e de M. sylvatica em M. sect. Mapania. Características adaptativas ao ambiente úmido também foram encontradas, como epiderme com paredes delgadas, níveis dos estômatos e presença de aerênquima. As células translúcidas do mesofilo foram descritas como precursoras de aerênquima e considerou-se que as células buliformes presentes nas folhas e brácteas involucrais apresentam função de suporte desses órgãos. Corpos silicosos não foram encontrados sustentando o seu uso na delimitação de Mapania e dos demais gêneros de Hypolytreae. Mapania belongs to Mapanioideae, a quite controversial subfamily in Cyperaceae due to the existence of unusual characters in both reproductive and vegetative organs. The genus is represented by seven species in Northern Brazil but taxonomic valuable information related to the leaf organs is still unknown. The present study aimed the anatomical description of the leaf organs (either basal leaves or cataphylls and involucral bracts) of three representative Brazilian species of Mapania. Samples of cataphylls, basal leaves and involucral bracts were sectioned and stained for observations under light microscopy. The involucral bracts provide the most elucidative characters (ten) to distinguish the three species The basal leaves provides six distinguishing characters and are useful to M macrophylla and M pycnostachya, as they are absent in M sylvatica. Mesophyll arrangement in the involucral bracts supports the circumscription of M macrophylla and M pycnostachya in M sect. Pycnocephala and of M sylvatica in M. sect. Mapania. Some features as thin-walled epidermal cells, stomata level and aerenchyma were considered to be adaptive to the humid environment in which the species occur. The translucent cells are here considered as aerenchyma precursors and a supportive function is assumed for the bulliform cells on the basal leaves and involucral bracts. No silica bodies were found which confirm it as a diagnostic character of Mapania among Hypolytreae genera. O capim vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides (L.) Roberty) é uma planta de origem asiática utilizada para produção de perfumes (a partir de um óleo extraído de suas raízes), controle de erosão, recuperação de áreas degradadas, artesanato, fitorremediação, alimentação de animais e tratamento de esgoto em regiões onde falta saneamento básico. O presente trabalho avaliou a morfologia e anatomia da raiz de C. zizanioides submetida ao esgoto, com o intuito de, confirmar a hipótese de alterações no seu desenvolvimento devido as diferentes concentrações de oxigênio. O experimento foi realizado na Estação de Tratamento de Esgoto (ETE) Samambaia, localizada no campus II da Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG). A estação está dividida em lagoa 1 (facultativa - 186 m de comprimento) e lagoa 2 (maturação - 112,90 m de comprimento), nas quais foram distribuídos sete flutuadores a cada 40 metros, um flutuador permaneceu em uma caixa com água potável (controle); em cada flutuador foram plantados três indivíduos. Foram efetuadas sete coletas durante o período de seis meses a cada 28 dias. Foram realizadas as seguintes medidas: comprimento e diâmetro total externo; em secção transversal diâmetro total (área), espessura da epiderme, espessura do córtex (total), espessura do aerênquima/parênquima, espessura da endoderme, diâmetro do cilindro vascular, diâmetro dos elementos (metaxilema) e quantidade de elementos (metaxilema), em ambas as regiões distal e proximal. Para a caracterização anatômica foram realizadas secções transversais na região proximal e distal das raízes. A raiz apresenta epiderme uniestratificada; córtex com anel esclerenquimático, parênquima fundamental, aerênquima e endoderme; cilindro central com periciclo uniestratificado, xilema e floema e uma região medular composta por células parenquimáticas. Ocorreram diferenças no desenvolvimento do aerênquima, além do aumento no espessamento das paredes celulares nas células do anel esclerenquimático, da endoderme e dos elementos de vaso; assim como na quantidade de camadas do córtex e número de elementos de vaso. A análise estatística mostrou que há diferenças significativas em oito das dez variáveis analisadas. Na lagoa 1 (facultativa) há uma alta concentração de matéria orgânica e baixa taxa de oxigênio dissolvido, o que afetou diretamente o desenvolvimento das raízes, sendo que a partir da 4ª coleta, as raízes antigas senesceram e novas se formaram, entretanto, não desenvolveram a região proximal devido às condições desfavoráveis. Na lagoa 2 (maturação) há baixa concentração de matéria orgânica e maior taxa de oxigênio dissolvido, o que permitiu o desenvolvimento tanto da região distal quanto da proximal, entretanto, não atingiram o desenvolvimento apresentado pelas raízes do controle. As raízes tiveram o seu desenvolvimento afetado na morfologia e anatomia, entretanto, não apresentam modificações estruturais. O capim vetiver poderá contribuir no processo de tratamento de esgoto se os indivíduos forem colocados no mínimo a 160 metros do lançamento de esgoto bruto, distância na qual a concentração de oxigênio dissolvido passa a não interferir na formação e desenvolvimento das raízes. The vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides (L.) Roberty) is a plant of Asian origin used for production of perfumes (from an oil extracted from its roots), erosion control, restoration of degraded areas, crafts, phytoremediation, feeding animals and sewage treatment in areas where lack basic sanitation. This study evaluated the morphology and anatomy of the root of C. zizanioides submitted to the waste, in order to confirm the hypothesis that changes in their development due to different oxygen concentrations. The experiment was conducted at the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Samambaia, located on campus II of the Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG). The station is divided into Pond 1 (facultative - 186 m length) and Pond 2 (maturation - 112,90 m in length), in which seven floats were distributed every 40 meters, a float remained in a box with potable water (control); each float three individuals were planted. Seven collections were taken during the six-month period every 28 days. The following measurements were taken: total length and outer diameter; the total cross sectional diameter (area), thickness of the epidermis, cortical thickness (total), thickness aerenchyma/parenchymal, thickness of endoderm, cylinder vascular diameter, diameter of the elements (metaxylem) and number of elements (metaxylem) in both proximal and distal regions. To characterize the anatomical crosssections in the proximal and distal roots were performed. The roots have a uniseriate epidermis; cortex sclerenchymatous ring, fundamental parenchyma, aerenchyma and endoderm; central cylinder unistratified pericycle, xylem and phloem and medullary region composed of parenchyma cells. There were differences in the development of aerenchyma, besides the increase in thickening of the cell walls of the cells sclerenchymatous ring, and endoderm vessel element; as well as the number of layers of the cortex and the number of vessel elements. The statistical analysis showed that there are significant differences in eight of the ten variables. In Pond 1 (facultative) there is a high concentration of organic matter and low rate of dissolved oxygen, which directly affected the development of the roots, and from the 4th collection, the ancient roots senescence and new were formed, however, did not develop the proximal region due to unfavorable conditions. In pond 2 (maturity) there is a low concentration of organic matter and higher rate of dissolved oxygen, which allowed the development of both the distal region and the proximal, however, have not reached the development presented by the roots of control. The roots were affected development in their morphology and anatomy, however, does not have structural modifications. Vetiver grass can contribute in wastewater treatment process if individuals are placed at least 160 meters from the release of raw wastewater, distance at which the concentration of dissolved oxygen shall not interfere in the formation and development of roots. The factors involved on the silicification process in Cyperaceae are scarcely known. In this study we analyse the effect of maturation stage and silica availability on the production of amorphous silica biomineralizations in culms of Schoenoplectus californicus. Young and senescent culms were collected from ponds with different silica availability. Two complementary methodologies (calcination and staining techniques), light and scanning electron microscopy and EDS were applied for amorphous silica analyses in plants. Quantitative data were analysed by Kruskal-Wallis and a two-way ANOVA tests. There were no significant differences between silica content of culms collected in ponds with different silica availability. Instead, silica content in senescent culms was higher than in young culms (F=91.43, P, Biomineralizaciones de sílice amorfo en Schoenoplectus californicus (Cyperaceae): su relación con el estado de maduración y la disponibilidad de sílice. La inundación tiene un efecto negativo sobre la mayoría de plantas terrestres debido a que reduce su crecimiento e induce la senescencia. La deficiencia de oxígeno, efecto principal de la inundación, cambia el metabolismo de la planta induciendo la vía anaeróbica o fermentativa como mecanismo alterno, aunque poco eficiente para la producción de energía. Igualmente el déficit de oxígeno aumenta la producción de especies reactivas de oxígeno (ROS), tanto en la mitocondria como en el cloroplasto. Como respuesta al incremento de ROS hay un aumento en el sistema de defensa antioxidante de la planta, el cual es considerado, junto con la inducción de la vía fermentativa, como una respuesta a corto plazo. Cuando la planta está sometida a largos periodos de inundación se presentan, adicionalmente, cambios morfológicos, como la formación de aerénquima, los cuales son considerados respuestas a largo plazo. En este artículo se revisan las respuestas, tanto a corto como a largo plazo, de las plantas a la condición de estrés hídrico por inundación. Flooding has a negative effect on the majority of terrestrial plants due to a reduction of growth and the resulting senescence. Oxygen deficiency, the main effect of flooding, can change plant metabolism, inducing the alternative anaerobic pathway, an inefficient mechanism for energy production. Equally, the oxygen deficit increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) both in chloroplasts and mitochondria. In response to increasing ROS, plants see a rise in their antioxidant defense system, which is considered, along with the fermentation pathway, a short-term response. When plants are submitted to long periods of flooding, they present morphological changes, such as aerenchyma formation, which is considered a longterm response. In this article, we review the short and long term responses of plants to water stress caused by flooding.

A alta difusividade do oxigênio em diversos materiais dificulta a criação e, ou, manutenção de um ambiente livre de O2. As técnicas utilizadas são pouco eficientes na exclusão do O2 e, portanto, não expressam a condição do solo alagado. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram desenvolver um método para obtenção de raízes em condição de hipoxia e avaliar a placa férrica e a formação de aerênquima no arroz. Foi criada uma condição de hipoxia semelhante à do solo alagado em tanques de 50 L, explorando a capacidade de difusão do O2 por meio do vinil em contato com solo reduzido. Cada tanque preenchido com solo (Gleissolo háplico) recebeu cinco sacos de vinil e foi mantido alagado. Plantas dos genótipos IRGA 423 e IRGA 424 previamente cultivadas em campo foram coletadas, tendo as raízes cortadas junto ao colo, lavadas e um terço da lâmina foliar removido. Cada saco de vinil recebeu 12 plantas de cada genótipo e solução nutritiva. Após sete dias, as novas raízes adventícias formadas foram utilizadas na determinação da porosidade e a da placa férrica em segmentos de 0–2, 2–4 e 4–6 cm a partir da ponta da raiz. As raízes foram colocadas em contato com a solução de um solo em processo de redução por 4 h e a placa férrica determinada após a extração do Fe com HCl 0,5 mol L-1. A porosidade foi determinada pela aplicação de ciclos de vácuo, com auxílio de seringas. A diferença de peso antes e depois do tratamento com vácuo e entrada de água foi assumida como sendo a estimativa da magnitude do aerênquima ao longo da raiz. A eficácia do método foi testada com a produção de raízes adventícias em saco de vinil com aeração e hipoxia. A porosidade nas raízes foi maior em ambiente hipóxico, comparado à aeração. A porosidade foi maior na proximidade da base da planta e, à medida que a porosidade aumentou, houve aumento do conteúdo de Fe na superfície das raízes, indicando que a placa férrica pode servir como estimativa da formação de aerênquima no arroz. O método de obtenção de raízes foi eficiente em promover a eliminação de O2 do saco de vinil para estudar a formação do aerênquima. The high oxygen diffusion in different materials makes the establishment and maintenance of oxygen-free environments difficult. The techniques used to obtain oxygen-free environments are little efficient and not representative of flooded soil conditions. The purpose of this study was to develop a method for obtaining roots in a hypoxic environment to evaluate iron plaque and aerenchyma formation in rice plants. A hypoxic condition similar to that of flooded soils was created in 50 L tanks, based on the oxygen diffusion capacity through vinyl plastic in contact with flooded soil. Each tank was filled with soil (Gley soil), five vinyl bags and then flooded. Rice plants of the genotypes IRGA 423 and IRGA 424 grown in the field were collected, the roots cut at the stem, washed and 1/3 of the leaves removed. Each bag was filled with 12 plants of each genotype and nutrient solution. After seven days, the new adventitious roots were used to determine the iron plaque and aerenchyma formation in the segments 0–2, 2–4 and 4– 6 cm from the root tips. The roots were exposed the solution of a flooded soil for 4 hours. The iron plaque was determined in the root segments after iron extraction with HCl 0.5 mol L-1. Porosity was determined in vacuum cycles applied with a syringe. The weight difference before and after vacuum treatment and water entrance was assumed as estimate of the magnitude of the aerenchyma of the roots. The method was tested with the production of new adventitious roots in vinyl bags under aerated and hypoxic conditions. Root porosity was higher in the hypoxic than in the aerated environment. Porosity was higher near plant base and as porosity increased, iron increased near the root surface, indicating the iron plaque as a parameter to estimate aerenchyma formation in rice roots. The tested root-growth method was efficient in eliminating O2 from the vinyl bags to study aerenchyma formation.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar as modificações nas características anatômicas radiculares relacionadas à hipoxia, durante 18 ciclos de seleção da variedade de milho (Zea mays) BRS 4154 Saracura, adaptada a áreas sujeitas a alagamento. A variedade BR 107 e o híbrido simples BRS 1010, suscetíveis ao alagamento, foram utilizados como controle. As diferentes cultivares foram submetidas a alagamentos intermitentes, a cada dois dias, durante dois meses. As amostras radiculares foram preparadas e analisadas em microscopiaóptica. Em relação ao grupo controle e aos ciclos anteriores de seleção, a BRS 4154 teve aumento na formação de aerênquima, diminuição do córtex, diminuição do diâmetro dos vasos, diminuição da camada subepidérmica, aumento na espessura do floema e epiderme. Os sucessivos ciclos de seleção melhoraram as características do milho 'Saracura' e sua tolerância a ambientes alagados. This work aimed to verify the modifications in the root anatomical characteristics related to hypoxia, along 18 selection cycles of the maize (Zea mays) cultivar BRS 4154 Saracura, adapted to areas subject to flooding. Cultivars not tolerant to fooding, BR 107 and the simple hybrid BRS 1010, were used as controls. The different cultivars were subjected to intermittent soil waterlogging every two days for two months. The root samples were prepared and analyzed through light microscopy. Compared to the controls group and to early selection cycles, BRS 4154 had increased development of aerenchyma, decreased cortex thickness, decreased metaxylem diameter, decreased subepidermal layer, and increased epidermis and phloem thickness. The successive selection cycles improved 'Saracura' maize characteristics and its tolerance to flooding environments.

The floodplain of the high Paraná river is characterized by the existence of several aquatic and transitional habitats among the aquatic and terrestrial environment, influencing in the presence and distribution of the aquatic macrophyte. With the objective of comparing the anatomy of the roots of eight species of emerging aquatic macrophyte, sampling were accomplished in different places and prepared permanent slides for analysis and capture of images. The species possess epidermis uniseriate of narrow and long cells, cortex composed by exodermis uniseriate or biseriate, with or without thickening, aerenchyma with great gaps, endodermis uniseriate, with or without thickening, continuous pericycle or interrupted and central cylinder with variable number of xylem poles. A planície alagável do alto rio Paraná é caracterizada pela existência de vários habitats aquáticos e transicionais entre o ambiente aquático e terrestre, influenciando na presença e distribuição das macrófitas aquáticas. Com o objetivo de comparar a anatomia das raízes de oito espécies de macrófitas aquáticas emergentes, foram realizadas coletas em diferentes locais e preparadas lâminas permanentes para análise e captura de imagens. As espécies possuem epiderme unisseriada com células estreitas e longas, córtex composto por exoderme unisseriada ou bisseriada, com ou sem espessamento, aerênquima com grandes lacunas, endoderme unisseriada, com ou sem espessamento, periciclo contínuo ou interrompido e cilindro central com número variável de pólos de xilema. 22 f

Flooding effects in Lithraea molleoides plants were studied. Young plants were kept under drained and flooded soil over a period of 35 days. For growth and development analyses, the length and diameter of stem and main root and the dry weight of roots, stem, and leaves were measured. For anatomical studies, sections of fresh and fixed roots, stem bases and leaves were made using standard procedures in vegetal anatomy. The stress reduced the dry weight increment of plants without causing the death of roots or the abscission of leaves. In the stem base, flooding induced the hypertrophy of lenticels and the increase of intercellular space and reduction lower starch contents, in the cortex. Plants flooded displayed greater percentage of cortical intercellular space in the secondary roots and lower investment in secretory structure formation in the stem base. It can be suggested that flooding reduced the recourses allocation to growth. These recourses could be used in morphological alterations, such as hypertrophied lenticels and increase of intercellular spaces, that could contribute to plants survival during stress period, probably, due maintenance of aerobic respiration. Visando contribuir para o conhecimento das estratégias de tolerância de espécies arbóreas à hipoxia, os efeitos do alagamento em plantas de Lithraea molleoides foram estudados. Indivíduos jovens foram mantidos em condições de solo drenado e alagado por 35 dias. Para as análises de crescimento e desenvolvimento, o comprimento e diâmetro do caule e raiz principal e o peso seco de raízes, caule e folhas foram medidos. Para os estudos anatômicos, foram realizados cortes de material fresco e fixado, de acordo com técnicas usuais em anatomia vegetal. As plantas alagadas apresentaram menor massa seca sem, contudo, ocorrer morte de raízes ou abscisão de folhas. Observou-se maior volume de espaços intercelulares nas raízes secundárias e na base dos caules dessas plantas, sendo que a última região apresentou lenticelas hipertrofiadas. As plantas alagadas apresentaram menor teor de amido na base do caule e menor investimento em estruturas secretoras. Sugere-se que o alagamento provocou redução na alocação de recursos para crescimento, os quais foram utilizados na produção de alterações morfológicas, como lenticelas hipertrofiadas e aumento dos espaços intercelulares. Essas alterações contribuíram para a sobrevivência das plantas durante o período de estresse, possivelmente por manter a respiração aeróbia

Foram estudadas as respostas plásticas em duas espécies nativas. Em G. hymenifolia, não foram verificadas modificações morfológicas significativas, exceto quanto ao conteúdo de amido de reserva, que foram menores nos lotes capacidade de campo desnutrido (CCD) e alagamento desnutrido (ALD). Em Genipa americana os indivíduos do lote (CCN - capacidade de campo nutrido) exibiram raízes adventícias com aerênquima distinto, mais freqüentes nas plantas do lote controle submetidas ao alagamento (ALN - alagado nutrido). Nessa última espécie, nos lotes ALN, verificou-se o surgimento de aerênquima lisógeno no caule, além da hipertrofia lenticelar. A diversidade de respostas às condições de alagamento, aliada à uma larga ocorrência de populações de Genipa americana em áreas sazonalmente inundadas, como por exemplo no Pantanal de Miranda-MS, sugere um complexo de interações entre caractes adaptativos morfológicos e fisiológicos, sendo o potencial gênico fundamental neste tipo de resposta. The plastic responses of seedlings and young plants of two Brazilian native trees were studied. In G. hymenifolia no important morphological changes were found, except for starch reserve content that was lower in the lots in nutrient poor, drained soils (CCD), and nutrient poor, flooded soils (ALD). In Genipa americana the rich, drained soil group (CCN) developed adventitious roots with evident aerenchyma, these roots were more frequent in the rich flooded soil (ALN) lots. In this group we also detected lysogenic aerenchyma formation and lenticular hypertrophy in the stem. Nessa última espécie, nos lotes ALN, verificou-se o surgimento de aerênquima lisógeno no caule, além da hipertrofia lenticelar. A diversidade de respostas às condições de alagamento, aliada à uma larga ocorrência de populações de Genipa americana em áreas sazonalmente inundadas, como por exemplo no Pantanal de Miranda-MS, sugere um complexo de interações entre caractes adaptativos morfológicos e fisiológicos, sendo o potencial gênico fundamental neste tipo de resposta. The plastic responses of seedlings and young plants of two Brazilian native trees were studied. In G. hymenifolia no important morphological changes were found, except for starch reserve content that was lower in the lots in nutrient poor, drained soils (CCD), and nutrient poor, flooded soils (ALD). In Genipa americana the rich, drained soil group (CCN) developed adventitious roots with evident aerenchyma, these roots were more frequent in the rich flooded soil (ALN) lots. In this group we also detected lysogenic aerenchyma formation and lenticular hypertrophy in the stem. O presente trabalho enfoca a anatomia das raízes de Bacopa salzmanii (Benth.) Wettst. Ex Edwall e B. monnierioides (Cham.) Robinson e suas adaptações aos ambientes aquático e terrestre. Foram analisadas raízes adventícias das duas espécies, coletadas no Município de Bonito e no Pantanal do Mato Grosso do Sul. As análises foram feitas do ápice à base da raiz, enfatizando a origem e desenvolvimento dos tecidos. O meristema apical apresenta a mesma estrutura nas duas espécies e não sofre alterações marcantes com a mudança do ambiente. Todos os tecidos se originam de três camadas distintas, na região do promeristema. A endoderme jovem é meristemática e dá origem ao córtex. O aerênquima é abundante e os septos podem conter espessamento em fi. A exoderme é unisseriada e composta por células curtas e longas. A coifa das duas espécies é pouco desenvolvida e apresenta estrutura semelhante nos dois ambientes. This work describes the anatomy of roots of Bacopa salzmanii (Benth.) Wettst. Ex Edwall and B. monnierioides (Cham.) Robinson and its adaptations to aquatic and terrestrial environments. Both species were collected in the city of Bonito and in the Pantanal (State of Mato Grosso do Sul). Adventitious roots were analyzed, from the apex to the base of the root. Tissues origin and development were emphasized. The apical meristem presents the same structure in both species and it is not significantly altered by the environmental changes. All the tissues are originated from three different layers, in the region of the promeristem. The young endodermis is meristematic and originates the cortex. The aerenchyma is abundant and the septa may contain phi thickenings. The exodermis is uniserial and composed of short and elongated cells. Root cap of both species is few developed in both environments.
