Abstract

Under humid or sub-humid tropical conditions, nitrogen is very often a limiting factor for agricultural production and its sustainability. A study conducted in the Brazilian Cerrados demonstrated that direct seeding mulch-based cropping systems (DMC) improve N–use efficiency by crops in such climates. On a long-term basis, N accumulated in soil organic matter at an average rate of 83 kg ha-1 year-1 as a result of increased crop residue inputs to the plant-soil system. After ten years of continuous DMC, the amount of N mineralized during the maize growing cycle (120 days) increased with 25 kg N ha-1. At the short-term scale, the rate of decomposition of the residues was slow, primarily due to reduced contact with soil. There was no phase of N immobilization caused by decomposing microorganisms. The type of cover crop had little effect on N supply. Nevertheless, the introduction of a cover crop can increase consistently N-use efficiency, reducing mineral N leaching by 25 to 50 %. The potential for N losses is indeed particularly high, since important amounts of residual mineral N are present in the soil profile at the beginning of the growing season when no cover crop has been grown.; Sous climats tropicaux humides à sub-humides, la gestion de l’azote pose souvent problème pour une production agricole durable. Une étude réalisée dans les Cerrados brésiliens a montré que les systèmes SCV peuvent améliorer la valorisation de cet élément. Sur le long terme, les moindres pertes par érosion et la forte restitution de résidus avec ces systèmes contribueraient à une augmentation de 83 kg ha-1 an-1 des stocks de N total du sol. Ainsi, les SCV permettent après 10 ans d’application d’augmenter de 25 kg ha-1 l’azote minéralisé durant les 120 jours du cycle du maïs. Sur le court terme, on constate que les résidus se décomposent lentement en surface du fait de leur faible surface de contact avec la matrice sol, sans qu’il y ait d’immobilisation en début de cycle par le pool microbien. Il y a parfois peu de différences liées à la nature de la plante intercalaire de couverture utilisée. Toutefois cette couverture peut jouer un grand rôle dans le recyclage de l’azote et diminuer ainsi les pertes totales par lixiviation de 25 à 50 %. En effet, ces pertes sont d’autant plus importantes qu’un important pool de N minéral est présent dans le profil en début de saison des pluies parce que non valorisé par une plante de couverture en fin de cycle précédent.

16. THE IMPACT OF CONSERVATION TILLAGE ON THE PRODUCTIVITY AND STABILITY OF MAIZE CROPPING SYSTEMS: A CASE STUDY IN WESTERN MEXICO

Abstract

This paper examines the economics of introducing conservation tillage into maize cropping systems in the state of Jalisco, in the western part of Mexico. A stochastic cost-benefit analysis (SCBA) of introducing conservation tillage in two contrasting agro-climatic zones in the four main maize management systems in the area was carried out. The SCBA takes into account the effects of conservation tillage on average returns and fully evaluates its potential risk-reducing aspect. The SCBA results were then used for a stochastic dominance analysis to evaluate farmers' incentives, characterized by their aversion to risk. The analysis reveals that although conservation tillage is economically viable, cash-constrained farmers, especially in the dry areas, may not readily adopt it. This is because conservation tillage is not adapted to small-scale farmers in Mexico, who lack seeding equipment and need techniques that are less reliant on herbicides. It is suggested that more work should be done with the participation of farmers in the region to attain a conservation tillage system that is better adapted to their circumstances.
