9. Interplay between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in some iron-pnictide single crystals studied by $^{57}$Fe M\'ossbauer spectroscopy

Abstract

We have performed detailed $^{57}$Fe M\"ossbauer spectroscopy measurements on Ba$_{0.78}$K$_{0.22}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ single crystal mosaics showing antiferromagnetic ordering below $T_N$ with superconductivity below $T_C$. Analysis of the M\"ossbauer spectra shows a decrease in the magnetic hyperfine (hf) field but no change in the magnetic volume fraction below $T_C$. This clearly indicates the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in these compounds. The decrease in the magnetic hf field below $T_C$ depends on the difference between $T_N$ and $T_C$, being the largest for $T_N$ close to $T_C$. Two different explanations for this observation are given. We also find that the non-magnetic volume fraction below $T_N$ correlates with the Ni doping $x$, being large for high $T_C$ and small for high $T_N$.

11. Servicios ecosistémicos de las especies nativas e introducidas de bambú en la Huasteca Potosina, México: usos del bambú

Abstract

Background and Aims: There are seven native bamboo species in the Huasteca Potosina (HP), but the richness of introduced species is unknown. For both groups there is no record of the ecosystem services (ES) they provide. Therefore, the objectives of the study were to record the presence of intro-duced bamboo species in the HP and to identify the ES of native and introduced species. Methods: Botanical explorations were carried out to visit all the municipalities of the study area; 57 botanical collections were made. In order to know the ES of native and introduced species, observations were made in the field, especially in localities where bamboo is grown and used, and we inter-viewed 31 key informants. Key results: In addition to the seven native bamboo species in the HP there are 11 introduced taxa (ten species and one variety), all of which are woody culms. Eight species and one variety are native to Asia, one to South America, and one introduced from the state of Veracruz, Mexico. The most widely distributed introduced species are Bambusa vulgaris, B. vulgaris var. vittata and B. oldhamii. The main use of woody bamboo is for construction and the native species most used for this is Guadua velutina. The introduced species are produced for decoration, living fence and construction. Conclusions: In the HP there are 44 ha of commercial bamboo plantations, together with the native species they provide three ES and five uses. The results of this work are the basis for future research on the ES of bamboo in the HP. It is necessary to continue monitoring commercial plantations, since they are increasing; in addition to evaluating the effects of different management practices in plantations and potential uses, especially of native species., Antecedentes y Objetivos: En la Huasteca Potosina (HP) existen siete especies nativas de bambú, pero se desconoce la riqueza de especies introducidas. De ambos grupos se carece del registro de los servicios ecosistémicos (SE) que proporcionan. Por ello, los objetivos del estudio fueron registrar la presencia de las especies introducidas de bambú en la HP e identificar los SE de las especies nativas e introducidas. Métodos: Se efectuaron exploraciones botánicas para visitar todos los municipios del área de estudio; se realizaron 57 recolectas botánicas. Para el registro de los SE de las especies nativas e introducidas se hicieron observaciones en campo, se visitaron comunidades en donde se cultiva y utiliza el bambú y se realizaron 31 entrevistas a informantes clave. Resultados clave: Además de las siete especies nativas de bambú en la HP, existen 11 taxones (diez especies y una variedad) introducidos, todos estos de culmos leñosos. Ocho especies y la variedad son nativas de Asia, una lo es de Sudamérica y otra introducida del estado de Veracruz, México. Las especies introducidas con mayor distribución son Bambusa vulgaris, B. vulgaris var. vittata y B. oldhamii. El principal uso del bambú leñoso es para la construcción y la especie nativa más utilizada para ello es Guadua velutina. Las especies introducidas son producidas para ornato, cerco vivo y construcción. Conclusiones: En la HP hay 44 ha de plantaciones comerciales de bambú; junto con las especies nativas proporcionan tres SE y cinco usos. Los resultados de este trabajo son la base para futuras investigaciones sobre los servicios ecosistémicos del bambú en la HP. Es necesario continuar con el monitoreo de plantaciones comerciales, ya que van en aumento; además de evaluación de los efectos de diferentes prácticas de manejo en plantaciones y usos potenciales, sobre todo de especies nativas.

Abstract

El Marianismo es un fenómeno psicosocial y cultural que se inició en Hispanoamérica cuando la Virgen María, a finales del siglo XV e inicio del siglo XVI, pasa a formar parte de la identidad de aquellos pueblos que fueron naciendo o fundándose. Desde el punto de vista socio-cultural interesa analizar esta categoría presente en los pueblos de habla hispana, como fenómeno religioso, dentro de la cultura popular y se pretende establecer la relación entre la devoción a María y la cultura popular venezolana en el siglo XX, dada las diversas advocaciones marianas en el país. El ensayo se aborda desde la perspectiva del método descriptivo y retrospectivo, en busca de una aproximación al proceso histórico en el que conviven y se entrelazan el Marianismo y la cultura popular. A tales efectos, el trabajo se apoyó en la revisión documental de la literatura sobre los dos elementos temáticos abordados, como base sustentable del hecho histórico, para comprender la realidad social y cultural. Se concluye que el Marianismo, como fenómeno socio-cultural, mantiene una vitalidad antropológica, espiritual y eclesiástica, formando parte de la realidad social del país, es decir, tiene vigencia en la cotidianidad de la identidad cristiana, en la práctica de fe y en la historia cultural del país el siglo XX, debido a que la religiosidad, el Marianismo y la cultura popular se enlazan para construir un entramado de conductas sociales, culturales y religiosas, que son parte de la identidad del pueblo.

Abstract

In the Mezquital Valley, Mexico, Agave leaf fibers are obtained traditionally from A. mapisaga (cultivar Ma'ye), A. salmiana (cultivars Chino cenizo and Xa'mni) and A. salmiana spp. crassispina (cultivar It'ui). The purpose of the study was to analyze some basic physical characteristics of the fibers from these four cultivars that are relevant for textile production. Measurements were taken of length (cm), diameter (µm), linear density (dtex), tensile strength (N), and color. Fibers were sampled from the marginal and central parts of young leaves. Statistical analysis was carried out on a completely randomized design, with a 4 × 2 factorial treatment arrangement. The longest and whitest central and marginal fibers were those from cultivars Ma'ye and Xa'mni; the thickest fibers were the central and marginal fibers from cultivar Chino cenizo, and the thinnest were the central and marginal fibers from cultivar Xa'mni. The finest fibers were the central and marginal ones from cv. It'ui; all the marginal fibers, regardless of their cultivar, have a similar tensile strength; but of the central fibers the most resistant were the ones from cv. Xa'mni. When comparing the central and marginal fibers from each cultivar, invariably the central fibers are the longest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Disordered crystalline Fe50Mn25+xSn25−x alloys, with x =-1.25, 0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 (close to the full-Heusler alloys), were arc-melted in a high purity argon atmosphere and the molten pellets were individually sealed in quartz tubes also under argon atmosphere. Subsequently, they were annealed at 1173 K for 4 days, being finally quenched in a bath with cold water. Structural and magnetic properties have systematically been studied using X-ray diffraction,57Fe, and119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopies, and magnetization measurements recorded at room temperature. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction patterns of the annealed samples with x =-1.25 and 0 has revealed the presence of two hexagonal crystallographic phases: (i) a chemically disordered solid solution identified as ε−(Fe/Mn)3Sn (majority fraction) and (ii) the ε−Fe5Sn3 intermetallic compound (minority fraction). For samples with x = 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5, the Rietveld analysis has only indicated the presence of a chemically disordered solid solution identified as ε−(Fe/Mn)3(Sn/Fe/Mn). Although compositions of the Fe50Mn25+xSn25−x alloys are close to that of full-Heusler alloys, none of them has the expected L21 structure. The average crystallite sizes, estimated from the Williamson-Hall method, are in the range of 256-62 nm. The average sizes has gradually decreased as the x-content is increased. Mössbauer results have shown localized-type magnetism from Fe non-equivalent sites, and itinerant-like magnetism on119Sn-probes. Magnetic hysteresis loops, recorded at 300 K for a maximum field of 2200 Oe, have indicated that the remanent and coercive fields have systematically decreased as the x-parameter has increased.
