Mathematical information is essential for technical work, but its creation, interpretation, and search are challenging. To help address these challenges, researchers have developed multimodal search engines and mathematical question answering systems. This book begins with a simple framework characterizing the information tasks that people and systems perform as we work to answer math-related questions. The framework is used to organize and relate the other core topics of the book, including interactions between people and systems, representing math formulas in sources, and evaluation. We close with some key questions and concrete directions for future work. Modelling the noise emitted by turbulent jets is made difficult by their acoustic inefficiency: only a tiny fraction of the near-field turbulent kinetic energy is propagated to the far field as acoustic waves. As a result, jet-noise models must accurately capture this small, acoustically efficient component hidden among comparatively inefficient fluctuations. In this paper, we identify this acoustically efficient near-field source from large-eddy-simulation data and use it to inform a predictive model. Our approach uses the resolvent framework, in which the source takes the form of nonlinear fluctuation terms that act as a forcing on the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. First, we identify the forcing that, when acted on by the resolvent operator, produces the leading spectral proper orthogonal decomposition modes in the acoustic field for a Mach 0.4 jet. Second, the radiating components of this forcing are isolated by retaining only portions with a supersonic phase speed. This component makes up less than 0.05% of the total forcing energy but generates most of the acoustic response, especially at peak (downstream) radiation angles. Finally, we propose an empirical model for the identified acoustically efficient forcing components. There are now several test collections for the formula retrieval task, in which a system's goal is to identify useful mathematical formulae to show in response to a query posed as a formula. These test collections differ in query format, query complexity, number of queries, content source, and relevance definition. Comparisons among six formula retrieval test collections illustrate that defining relevance based on query and/or document context can be consequential, that system results vary markedly with formula complexity, and that judging relevance after clustering formulas with identical symbol layouts (i.e., Symbol Layout Trees) can affect system preference ordering.

In this paper, we consider the eigenproblems for Latin squares in a bipartite min-max-plus system. The focus is upon developing a new algorithm to compute the eigenvalue and eigenvectors (trivial and non-trivial) for Latin squares in a bipartite min-max-plus system. We illustrate the algorithm using some examples. Furthermore, we compare the results of our algorithm with some of the existing algorithms which shows that the propose method is more efficient.

We present a novel application of rotors in geometric algebra to represent the change of curvature tensor, that is used in shell theory as part of the constitutive law. We introduce a new decomposition of the change of curvature tensor, which has explicit terms for changes of curvature due to initial curvature combined with strain, and changes in rotation over the surface. We use this decomposition to perform a scaling analysis of the relative importance of bending and stretching in flexible tubes undergoing self excited oscillations. These oscillations have relevance to the lung, in which it is believed that they are responsible for wheezing. The new analysis is necessitated by the fact that the working fluid is air, compared to water in most previous work. We use stereographic imaging to empirically measure the relative importance of bending and stretching energy in observed self excited oscillations. This enables us to validate our scaling analysis. We show that bending energy is dominated by stretching energy, and the scaling analysis makes clear that this will remain true for tubes in the airways of the lung., Comment: 8 figures

Motivated by the problem of jet-flap interaction noise, we study the tonal dynamics that occur when a sharp edge is placed in the hydrodynamic nearfield of an isothermal turbulent jet. We perform hydrodynamic and acoustic pressure measurements in order to characterise the tones as a function of Mach number and streamwise edge position. The distribution of spectral peaks observed, as a function of Mach number, cannot be explained using the usual edge-tone scenario, in which resonance is underpinned by coupling between downstream-travelling Kelvin-Helmholtz wavepackets and upstream-travelling sound waves. We show, rather, that the strongest tones are due to coupling between the former and upstream-travelling jet modes recently studied by Towne et al. (2017) and Schmidt et al. (2017). We also study the band-limited nature of the resonance, showing a high-frequency cut-off to be due to the frequency dependence of the upstream-travelling waves. At high Mach number these become evanescent above a certain frequency, whereas at low Mach number they become progressively trapped with increasing frequency, a consequence of which is their not being reflected in the nozzle plane. Additionally, a weaker, low-frequency, forced-resonance regime is identified that involves the same upstream travelling jet modes but that couple, in this instance, with downstream-travelling sound waves. We present a novel derivation of the elastic theory of shells. We use the language of Geometric algebra, which allows us to express the fundamental laws in component-free form, thus aiding physical interpretation. It also provides the tools to express equations in an arbitrary coordinate system, which enhances their usefulness. The role of moments and angular velocity, and the apparent use by previous authors of an unphysical angular velocity, has been clarified through the use of a bivector representation. This study aims to make use of two concepts in the field of aeroacoustics; an analogy with relativity, and Geometric Algebra. The analogy with relativity has been investigated in physics and cosmology, but less has been done to use this work in the field of aeroacoustics. Despite being successfully applied to a variety of fields, Geometric Algebra has yet to be applied to acoustics. Our aim is to apply these concepts first to a simple problem in aeroacoustics, sound propagation in uniform flow, and the more general problem of acoustic propagation in non-uniform flows. By using Geometric Algebra we are able to provide a simple geometric interpretation to a transformation commonly used to solve for sound fields in uniform flow. We are then able to extend this concept to an acoustic space-time applicable to irrotational, barotropic background flows. This geometrical framework is used to naturally derive the requirements that must be satisfied by the background flow in order for us to be able to solve for sound propagation in the non-uniform flow using the simple wave equation. We show that this is not possible in the most general situation, and provide an explicit expression that must be satisfied for the transformation to exist. We show that this requirement is automatically satisfied if the background flow is incompressible or uniform, and for both these cases derive an explicit transformation.
