Abstract: International audience; La fragmentation des milieux naturels est l’une des principales causes d’érosion de la biodiversité. Face à l’intérêt du maintien d’habitats favorables suffisamment diversifiés et connectés entre eux, afin que les espèces animales et végétales puissent assurer leurs besoins vitaux et éventuellement s'adapter aux changements environnementaux, la communauté internationale a notamment traduit sa volonté d’agir en divers textes réglementaires. C’est ainsi que la directive cadre européenne sur l'eau (DCE, 2000) a appuyé l’intérêt de connaissance, de préservation ou de restauration des continuités écologiques au sein des hydrosystèmes et des corridors rivulaires.Certains ouvrages transversaux en cours d'eau (plus de 100 000 sont actuellement recensés en France) sont susceptibles de dégrader la continuité écologique dans les écosystèmes aquatiques.Dans ce contexte, il est apparu essentiel de développer des démarches de diagnostic standardisées, permettant d’appréhender, sur un territoire donné, les risques d'altération de la continuité écologique générés par les obstacles à l'écoulement, notamment en termes de mobilité de la faune aquatique. C’est dans ce contexte, dès la fin des années 2000, que l’Office national de l’eau et des milieux aquatiques (Onema), depuis intégré à l’Agence française pour la biodiversité (AFB), s’est emparé de cette problématique et a coordonné, pour la métropole, le développement d’une méthodologie ICE "Informations sur la continuité écologique", visant à permettre l’évaluation du niveau d’impact des obstacles à l’écoulement sur le déplacement des principales espèces de poissons métropolitains (Baudoin et al., 2014).Dans les départements insulaires d'outre-mer, un recensement en cours fait d’ores et déjà état de plus de 1 000 obstacles présents sur les cours d’eau. Ces ouvrages sont, pour certains, susceptibles d'entraver voire de bloquer les déplacements indispensables aux espèces de poissons et de macro-crustacés, quasi toutes amphihalines, pour boucler leur cycle de vie.L’évaluation de leurs impacts potentiels sur la continuité écologique était jusqu’à présent essentiellement confiéeà l’expertise de quelques personnes. Or, les enjeux comme le nombre de barrières à évaluer, le partage simplifié des connaissances et de concepts communs, entre acteurs par ailleurs d’horizons divers (maîtres d’ouvrage, bureaux d’études, gestionnaires, administrations, etc.), impliquent de proposer une méthodologie transparente à la fois robuste scientifiquement, objective, compréhensible et applicable en un minimum de temps.Fort de l’expérience du déploiement d’ICE en métropole, l’AFB, en collaboration avec l’ensemble des directions de l’environnement, de l’aménagement et du logement et des offices de l’eau, et dans le cadre d’une réalisation menée avec Écogea et Ocea consult’, a coordonné et permis l’adaptation de cette méthode aux départements et régions d’outre-mer, couvrant ainsi les îles de la Guadeloupe, de la Martinique, de Mayotte et de La Réunion.Organisé en trois chapitres, ce Comprendre pour agir propose une synthèse des principales connaissances scientifiques et techniques internationales sur le sujet et présente la méthodologie proposée :- un premier chapitre présente les enjeux de la continuité écologique pour l'ichtyofaune et la carcinofaune d’outre-mer. Il expose les typologies d’obstacles rencontrés, les enjeux écologiques et fonctionnels relatifs à la libre circulation des espèces de poissons et de macro-crustacés concernées, et décrit pour chacune d’elles les principaux déterminants environnementaux, éthologiques et physiques conditionnant leurs possibilités et capacités de franchissement ;- un second chapitre expose les concepts fondateurs de la méthode ICE adaptée aux départements insulaires d’outre-mer, son domaine d’applicabilité, les groupes d'espèces considérés, leurs caractéristiques et les cinq classes de franchissabilité indicatrices du niveau d'impact des obstacles sur leurs déplacements à la montaison ;- un troisième chapitre aborde en détail la méthode proposée en explicitant les étapes de diagnostic de la franchissabilité des obstacles à la montaison, grâce à des logigrammes et des textes d’accompagnement. Ce chapitre précise ainsi, pour les configurations d’obstacles généralement rencontrées, les critères de définitiondes classes de franchissabilité. Confrontant les variables hydrauliques et physiques de l’obstacle évalué auxcapacités de franchissement des espèces, il permet une analyse point par point, justifiée, de la franchissabilité de l’ouvrage par celles-ci. Poussant l’analyse aux capacités spécifiques de certains taxons, il propose également un schéma d’évaluation et de diagnostic du franchissement propre à la reptation par les anguilles, au ventousage et à l’escalade par les Sicydiinae ou les post-larves et juvéniles de petites espèces benthiques ainsi qu’à la marche par les macro-crustacésRichement détaillé et illustré, ce Comprendre pour agir permet à chacun de comprendre précisément la méthodologie développée, ses fondements et ses enjeux, et d’appliquer ces savoirs sur son territoire.

Abstract: International audience; This study described a new stone loach species in France, Barbatula leoparda, which is endemic to French Catalonia (Têt and Tech river drainages). Seven specimens were compared to 49 specimens of B. barbatula (Linnaeus, 1758) and 71 specimens of B. quignardi (Băcescu-Meşter, 1967). This new species is characterized by the presence of blotches on the belly and the jugular area in individuals longer than 47 mm SL and by a greater interorbital distance (35.5 to 41.8% of the head length). We brought moreover the sequence of two mitochondrial markers (COI and 12S, respectively 652 and 950 bp) of the holotype, which ar; Cette étude décrit une nouvelle espèce de loche franche en France, Barbatula leoparda, qui est endémique à la Catalogne française (bassins de la Têt et du Tech). Sept spécimens ont été comparés à 49 spécimens de B. barbatula (Linnaeus, 1758) et 71 spécimens de B. quignardi (Băcescu-Meşter, 1967). Cette nouvelle espèce est caractérisée par la présence de taches sur le ventre et dans la partie jugulaire pour les individus d’une taille supérieure à 47 mm LS et par une plus grande distance inter-orbitaire (35,5 to 41,8% de la longueur de la tête). Pour les identifications moléculaires, nous décrivons également la séquence de deux marqueurs mitochondriaux (COI et 12S, respectivement 652 et 950 pb) pour l’holotype, qui sont bien distincts des autres espèces. Cette découverte est importante pour la conservation.

Abstract: International audience; Background : For decades, biodiversity has suffered massive losses worldwide. Urbanization is one of the major drivers of extinction because it leads to the physical fragmentation and loss of natural habitats and it is associated with related effects, e.g. pollution and in particular noise pollution given that many man-made sounds are generated in cities (e.g. industrial and traffic noise, etc.). However, all human activities generate sounds, even far from any human habitation (e.g. motor boats on lakes, aircraft in the air, etc.). Ecological research now deals increasingly with the effects of noise pollution on biodiversity. Many studies have shown the impacts of anthropogenic noise and concluded that it is potentially a threat to life on Earth. The present work describes a protocol to systematically map evidence of the environmental impact of noise pollution on biodiversity. The resulting map will inform on the species most studied and on the demonstrated impacts. This will be useful for further primary research by identifying knowledge gaps and in view of further analysis, such as systematic reviews.Methods : Searches will include peer-reviewed and grey literature published in English and French. Two online databases will be searched using English terms and search consistency will be assessed with a test list. No geographical restrictions will be applied. The subject population will include all species. Exposures will include all types of man-made sounds (industrial, traffic, etc.) in all types of environments (or media) (terrestrial, aerial, aquatic), including all contexts and sound origins (spontaneous or recorded sounds, in situ or laboratory studies, etc.). All relevant outcomes will be considered (space use, reproduction, communication, abundance, etc.). An open-access database will be produced with all relevant studies selected during the three screening stages. For each study, the database will contain metadata on key variables of interest (species, types of sound, outcomes, etc.). This database will be available in conjunction with a map report describing the mapping process and the evidence base with summary figures and tables of the study characteristics.

Abstract: This study deals with the impact of spatio-temporal heterogeneities on the assessment of lake ecological status according to the European water framework directive (WFD). A method, based on three-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic and ecological modeling, is presented to assess the variability of lake ecological status, and to locate the most representative sampling station of Lake Geneva (France/Switzerland). Five variables used in the lake ecological status evaluation were simulated by using the free software Delft3D. The numerical simulation results showed that the simulated ecological status based on chlorophyll a and total phosphorus concentrations measured at the regulatory monitoring station depend on the choice of the sampling date. Results also indicated a strong spatial heterogeneity in ecological status that varies from “poor” to “good” along an East-West gradient. Finally, the numerical simulation results showed that the most representative point of a mean theoretical ecological quality for Lake Geneva would be located in the center of the upper basin, close to the historical sampling station.

Abstract: International audience; This study described a new stone loach species in France, Barbatula leoparda, which is endemic to French Catalonia (Têt and Tech river drainages). Seven specimens were compared to 49 specimens of B. barbatula (Linnaeus, 1758) and 71 specimens of B. quignardi (Băcescu-Meşter, 1967). This new species is characterized by the presence of blotches on the belly and the jugular area in individuals longer than 47 mm SL and by a greater interorbital distance (35.5 to 41.8% of the head length). We brought moreover the sequence of two mitochondrial markers (COI and 12S, respectively 652 and 950 bp) of the holotype, which ar; Cette étude décrit une nouvelle espèce de loche franche en France, Barbatula leoparda, qui est endémique à la Catalogne française (bassins de la Têt et du Tech). Abstract: International audience; The development of passage systems for migratory fish is crucial to mitigate the impact of river fragmentation. Concerning downstream migration of juvenile salmon (smolts), understanding their behaviour is a key to improving the efficiency of bypass systems. Among devices to improve efficiency, artificial lighting has proved effective in certain situations. Based on (1) recent observations of early migrating smolts where migration was delayed in the Poutès dam reservoir (Allier River, France) and (2) the fact that the implementation of bypass lighting devices was based on experiments involving later-season migrants, the present study assessed the effect of a lighting device on wild early-migrating smolts. One hundred wild smolts were tagged with acoustic transmitters and their behaviour near the bypass entrance under lit or dark conditions was assessed using 2D acoustic telemetry. A very abrupt change in behaviour around mid-April was observed, which directly affected their response to light. In the first phase of the downstream migration season (before mid-April), lighting significantly reduced the attractiveness of the bypass, while this surprisingly seemed to favour passage: smolts less frequently approached the bypass entry zone but passed through it more frequently. However, in the second phase (after mid-April), lighting attracted and kept the smolts close to the bypass entrance and significantly increased passage, corroborating previous experiments. The present study demonstrated an interaction between the development of migratory fish and their behaviour under lit or dark conditions. It also highlighted the importance of taking account of such behavioural change during the migration season when designing fish passage systems.

Abstract: International audience; Hydropower plants can profoundly modify the natural morphology and hydrology of rivers and can alter the functionality of habitats for fish living and reproduction. In particular, hydropeaking leads to rapid and frequent changes of the hydrodynamic conditions and it is crucial to ensure aquatic habitat quality is maintained as much as possible during these periods. One present method to determine mitigation measure (minimum and maximum flow, rate of change) is to perform hydraulic simulations in 1D or 2D in the range of flow variation and to evaluate habitat quality for fish with the microhabitat method. The hydraulic model calibration has to be conducted carefully since the model has to reproduce precisely the hydraulic conditions from low to high flow rates (up to several times the mean flow of the rivers). Within this range, the friction coefficient can evolve greatly because at low flows the size of roughness elements become comparable to the water depth. This phenomenon is observed by performing the modelling and the calibration at 2 stations on a river in French Pyrenees with different cross section shapes, one with progressive overflowing of some banks with large blocks and the other one without such phenomena. Thanks to field measurements of water levels at low and high discharge, the calibration process has shown that the friction coefficient can be multiplied by 2 as a function of the discharge. The paper proposes a methodology to evaluate the most appropriate tool. As water depth is concerned, the 2D simulations (TELEMAC 2D) provide similar results to those obtained with 1D (HEC-RAS) because flow remains unidirectional. Then a sensitivity analysis is carried out to estimate the uncertainty on the fish habitat outputs for a fish species (brown trout in the present study) resulting from several widely used friction laws. These friction laws can lead to different conclusions about habitat suitability depending on the calibrated coefficient. Finally, to perform relevant habitat modelling, it is necessary to measure water levels at several discharges and to describe accurately the spatial variability of roughness height.

Abstract: International audience; Remote sensing of inland and sea waters depends on the quality of the retrieval of the water-leaving radiance from the top-of-atmosphere measurements. The water-leaving radiance can be difficult to observe due to the reflection of direct sunlight on the air-water interface (sunglint) in the direction of the satellite field of view. The viewing geometry of Sentinel-2 satellite (European Space Agency) makes it vulnerable to sunglint contamination. In this paper, an original method is proposed to correct Sentinel-2-like imagery for sunglint contamination. The sunglint contribution is first estimated from the shortwave-infrared (SWIR) part of the spectrum and then extrapolated toward the near-infrared and visible bands. The spectral variation of the sunglint signal is thus revisited for a wide spectral range (from 350 to 2500 nm). The bidirectional reflectance distribution function related to the sunglint is shown to vary by > 28% from the SWIR to the blue bands of Sentinel-2. The application of the proposed algorithm on actual Sentinel-2 data demonstrates that sunglint patterns are satisfactorily removed over the entire images whatever the altitude of the observed target. Comparison with in situ data of water-leaving radiances (AERONET-OC) showed that our proposed algorithm significantly improves the correlation between satellite and in situ data by 55% (i.e., from R2 = 0.56 to R2 = 0.87). In addition, the discrepancies between satellite and in situ measurements are reduced by 60%. It is also shown that the aerosol data provided by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) can be safely used within the proposed algorithm to correct the Sentinel-2-like satellite data for both sunglint and atmospheric radiances. Improvements of the proposed method potentially rely on simultaneous retrievals of the aerosol optical properties. The proposed method is applicable to any satellite sensor which is able to measure in SWIR spectral bands over aquatic environments.

Abstract: National audience; La démarche et les outils présentés dans ce guide permettent de diagnostiquer qualitativement et quantitativement les échanges nappe/rivière en tenant compte du degré plus ou moins élevé d’anthropisation. De tels diagnostics contribueront à la préservation de la ressource en eau, des nappes phréatiques et de la biodiversité aquatique sur les bassins versants à enjeux importants. Ils sont issus de travaux de recherche et applicables en contexte alluvionnaire et sédimentaire. Le guide propose une démarche (parties A et B) qui aidera le lecteur à choisir les outils adaptés à son terrain et à ses enjeux et à en interpréter les résultats. Les outils (partie C) sont présentés sous forme de fiches techniques donnant un accès rapide à l’information nécessaire pour les comprendre et les mettre en œuvre : principe, données nécessaires, protocole de mesure, interprétation, exemple de résultats, valeurs guides, points forts et points faibles... Les outils proposés sont les suivants : analyse géomatique des niveaux d’eau, modèles hydrodynamiques distribués à base physique, modèles hydrothermiques à base physique et dispositifs de mesure de température et d’écoulements d’eau, image thermique infrarouge, géochimie, végétation aquatique, invertébrés souterrains. Ce guide s’adresse avant tout aux gestionnaires de l’eau qui, pour gérer de façon durable leurs ressources en eau, doivent s’intéresser aux interactions nappe/rivière. Les informations et la démarche proposées ont donc pour objectif principal d’aider l’utilisateur à mettre en œuvre et réaliser par lui-même une étude pour caractériser les échanges nappe/rivière ou à rédiger le cahier des charges pour la sous-traiter.

Abstract: [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]QUASARE; International audience; Physical habitat degradation is prevalent in river ecosystems. Although still little is known about the ecological consequences of altered hydromorphology, understanding the factors at play can contribute to sustainable environmental management. In this study we aimed to identify the hydromorphological features controlling a key ecosystem function and the spatial scales where such linkages operate. As hydromorphological and chemical pressures often occur in parallel, we examined the relative importance of hydromorphological and chemical factors as determinants of leaf breakdown. Leaf breakdown assays were investigated at 82 sites of rivers throughout the French territory. Leaf breakdown data were then crossed with data on water quality and with a multi-scale hydro- morphological assessment (i.e. upstream catchment, river segment, reach and habitat) when quantitative data were available. Microbial and total leaf breakdown rates exhibited differential responses to both hydromorphological and chemical alterations. Relationships between the chemical quality of the water and leaf breakdown were weak, while hydromorphological integrity explained independently up to 84.2% of leaf breakdown. Hydrological and morphological parameters were the main predictors of microbial leaf breakdown, whereas hydrological parameters had a major effect on total leaf breakdown, particularly at large scales, while morphological parameters were important at smaller scales. Microbial leaf breakdown were best predicted by hydromorphological features defined at the upstream catchment level whereas total leaf breakdown were best predicted by reach and habitat level geomorphic variables. This study demonstrates the use of leaf breakdown in a biomonitoring context and the importance of hydromorphological integrity for the functioning of running water. It provides new insights for envi- ronmental decision-makers to identify the management and restoration actions that have to be un- dertaken including the hydromorphogical features that should be kept in minimal maintenance to support leaf breakdown.

Abstract: International audience; Brown rats are one of the most widespread urban species worldwide. Despite the nuisances they induce and their potential role as a zoonotic reservoir, knowledge on urban rat populations remains scarce. The main purpose of this study was to characterize an urban brown rat population from Chanteraines park (Hauts-de-Seine, France), with regards to haematology, population genetics, immunogenic diversity, resistance to anticoagulant rodenticides, and community of parasites. Haematological parameters were measured. Population genetics was investigated using 13 unlinked microsatellite loci. Immunogenic diversity was assessed for Mhc-Drb. Frequency of the Y139F mutation (conferring resistance to rodenticides) and two linked microsatellites were studied, concurrently with the presence of anticoagulant residues in the liver. Combination of microscopy and molecular methods were used to investigate the occurrence of 25 parasites. Statistical approaches were used to explore multiple parasite relationships and model parasite occurrence. Eighty-six rats were caught. The first haematological data for a wild urban R. norvegicus population was reported. Genetic results suggested high genetic diversity and connectivity between Chanteraines rats and surrounding population(s). We found a high prevalence (55.8%) of the mutation Y139F and presence of rodenticide residues in 47.7% of the sampled individuals. The parasite species richness was high (16). Seven potential zoonotic pathogens were identified, together with a surprisingly high diversity of Leptospira species (4). Chanteraines rat population is not closed, allowing gene flow and making eradication programs challenging, particularly because rodenticide resistance is highly prevalent. Parasitological results showed that co-infection is more a rule than an exception. Furthermore, the presence of several potential zoonotic pathogens, of which four Leptospira species, in this urban rat population raised its role in the maintenance and spread of these pathogens. Our findings should stimulate future discussions about the development of a long-term rat-control management program in Chanteraines urban park.

Abstract: [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [ADD1_IRSTEA]Hydrosystèmes et risques naturels [ADD2_IRSTEA]Dynamique et fonctionnement des écosystèmes [ADD2_IRSTEA]Systèmes aquatiques soumis à des pressions multiples; International audience; The analysis of concentration-discharge (C-Q) relationships provides useful information on the processes controlling the mobilization and delivery of chemical elements into streams as well as biogeochemical transformations in river networks. Previous metrics developed to characterize export regimes seldom considered the possibility for the C response to Q dynamics to differ between short-term Q variations during storm events and seasonal Q variations during baseflow periods. Here, we present the “C-Qquick-slow” model, which considers the possibility for C-Q relationships to vary across temporal scales. This model was applied in 219 French catchments with various sizes (11–2500 km2), land use and hydrological contexts. We evidenced contrasting export regimes for nitrate (NO3 −), total phosphorus (TP) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), and surprisingly consistent C-Q patterns at the seasonal scale for each parameter. For instance, NO3 −-Q relationships were positive at the seasonal scale in 75% cases and relationships during storms showed either a dilution pattern (24% cases), a non-significant pattern (50%), or a mobilization pattern (12%). TP and SRP relationships with Q at the seasonal scale were almostsystematically negative (95%), and patterns during storm events were in most cases mobilization for TP (77%) or non-significant for SRP (69%). We linked the different C-Q relationships with catchment descriptors and found that indicators of diffuse source loading determined NO3 − seasonal amplitudes, and hydrological drivers could explain the behavior during storms. By contrast, point sources determined P seasonal amplitudes, and diffuse sources controlled P dynamics during storms. The C-Qquick-slow model has the potential to improve nutrient loadestimations because of the good predictability of appropriate C-Q archetypes and the possibility to interpolate low frequency concentration data to a daily frequency

Abstract: Suite à la première étude écologique IQE réalisée en 2012, puis à la seconde réalisée en 2014, les relevés naturalistes effectués en 2021 ont permis d’affiner la compréhension de l’évolution de la biodiversité du Golf de Vidauban. Couvrant une superficie de 126 hectares le golf s’inscrit dans un contexte écologique particulièrement riche, dans la continuité du périmètre de la RNN de la Plaine des Maures.635 espèces ont ainsi pu être observées lors des prospections réalisées au cours de l’année 2021 et 1 548 données d’occurrences faune/flore ont été intégrées à l’Inventaire National du Patrimoine Naturel (INPN).Basé sur des critères de patrimonialité, de diversité et de fonctionnalité écologique, et à l’image du constat déjà réalisé en 2012 pour le calibrage de l’IQE puis au cours d’une 2e étude en 2014, le résultat de la mise en œuvre de l’Indice de Qualité Écologique (IQE) sur le site s’explique en particulier par :- Une richesse floristique exceptionnelle dont 31 espèces patrimoniales au regard des critères IQE.- 60 espèces d’oiseaux, appartenant à différents cortèges.- 11 espèces animales patrimoniales comptabilisées.- Une grande diversité d’habitats naturels et semi-naturels (+ de 20).- Une diversité de micro-habitats identifiés et potentiels.Mais également par :- La présence de surfaces artificialisées sur environ 38 ha (comprenant la plupart des zones de jeu).- La colonisation du site par des espèces végétales exotiques envahissantes (+ de 20 espèces identifiées), ainsi que l’accroissement de la population d’Écrevisse de Louisiane.Des aménagements et des mesures de gestion ont été proposées dans le cadre de plusieurs études et expérimentations conduites sur le golf et plus largement sur le domaine de Bouis (partenariat FEGVE-MNHN). Les recommandations faites doivent s’inscrire dans la durée et doivent être suivies plus précisément, dans le cadre du plan d’actions proposé, tout en tenant compte des contraintes liées au jeu.

Abstract: Dans le cadre du partenariat entre le Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle et la fédération française de golf, une étude a été menée portant sur la résilience des milieux prairiaux du Golf National suite à la Ryder Cup en 2018. L’étude mise en place pour une période de trois ans cherche à : identifier les impacts de la Ryder Cup sur la biodiversité des milieux prairiaux ; comprendre et caractériser l’évolution des milieux ; identifier les changements opérés dans la structure et la composition des communautés de trois groupes bioindicateurs. Au travers de l’analyse de la diversité taxonomique et de l’abondance de la flore, des rhopalocères et des orthoptères, plusieurs tendances ont pu être identifiées. Les communautés de chaque placette ont été caractérisées. Des différences et des similitudes ont été observées entre les zones « témoin » et « résilience » pour chacun des groupes bioindicateurs. Les différences en termes de structure des communautés apparaissent plus marquées pour la flore que pour les orthoptères et les rhopalocères. L’absence de données relatives à l’état initial des zones étudiées ne permet pas de quantifier précisément l’impact de la Ryder Cup sur la résilience des milieux prairiaux du Golf National. Cependant, les analyses menées suite à ces 3 années d’étude, ont mis en évidence la régénération rapide des communautés végétales associée à une recolonisation par certaines espèces de rhopalocères et d’orthoptères, sur des zones fortement impactées par le piétinement et les installations. Il reste important de prolonger les suivis de la biodiversité dans son ensemble afin de poursuivre la démarche de connaissance et de prise en compte de la biodiversité engagée par le Golf National.

Abstract: Background The control and prevention of vector-borne and zoonotic diseases is often based on the reduction of host or vector populations, involving but not limited to preventative culling and use of insecticides. Yet, destructive interventions such as these have shown several limitations including ineffectiveness on arthropods and negative impacts on ecosystems. An alternative strategy would be to rely on the natural ecosystem functions and their careful management to regulate such diseases. The goal of our work was to evaluate existing scientific evidence on potential links between ecosystem components/functions and 14 vector-borne and zoonotic diseases impacting human health and answer the question: “What evidence exists on the impact of specific ecosystem components and functions on infectious diseases?”. Methods We searched for scientific articles published in English and French and screened them in a 3-round process (title, abstract and full-text). Articles were retained, without any geographical limitation, if they matched the following eligibility criteria: an exposure/intervention linked to changes in biological communities, habitats, or landscapes; an outcome consisting of any measure of infection in vector, animal or human hosts; and the presence of a comparator, in time and/or in space. The results are presented as a systematic map, followed by a narrative review where the amount of papers allowed for synthesis. Results Searches in 5 scientific publication databases allowed to retrieve 9723 unique articles, among which 207 were retained after the screening process. The amount of relevant literature was highly variable depending on diseases, and the types of exposures also varied greatly among studies focusing on the same disease. A hundred articles presented in the map were unique in their “disease x exposure” combination and thus not eligible for further narrative description. The remaining 107 articles were organized in 34 “disease x exposure” groups, encompassing 9 out of the 14 initial diseases. The groups were composed of 2 to 16 articles and were examined to provide a description of the current state of knowledge for those diseases. Conclusion Studies investigating the interaction between infectious diseases and ecosystems components and functions are still very scarce, and certain diseases are much more studied than others. Out of 14 diseases, 8 generated less than 10 relevant articles, while 2 diseases (Lyme disease and West Nile disease) represented 44% of all relevant studies. Although several vector-borne diseases included in the review represent a major health issue in the world, such as malaria or dengue, they have been exclusively studied under the prism of land-use, and we were unable to find relevant studies that tested the regulatory role of animal biodiversity-related functions. The role of predation in the regulation of vector and host populations has rarely been studied, with the exception of schistosomiasis. The dilution and amplification effects were addressed in several studies focusing on the composition of ecological communities. This map is a first step and could be upgraded in order to guide future research projects with the aim to conduct meta-analysis and build a robust evidence base to inform decision-making.

Abstract: International audience; The Saint-Sauveur dam was built in 1992 in the middle section of the Buech River. Downstream of the dam, a channel incision by several meters was observed. A gravel replenishment operation was planned in order to restore the active channel. An equivalent of two times the mean annual bedload-transport capacity (43,500 m(3)) was replenished downstream of the dam in September 2016. The aim of this paper is to quantify morphological change associated with sediment remobilization in order to evaluate the efficiency of the restoration works. The monitoring was based on a combination of (a) change detection using sequential high-resolution digital elevation models (from airborne LiDAR data), (b) bedload tracing using active ultrahigh-frequency radio-frequency identification technology, and (c) complementary field surveys of channel grain-size distribution and morphology for bedload-transport computation. Field monitoring allows us to capture a net aggradation along a 2-km reach after the first post-replenishment flood. A sediment balance analysis was performed to back-calculate bedload supply coming from the sluicing operation during the flood. Although the sediment replenishment operation clearly had a positive impact on the morphological conditions of the starved river reach, the effective bedload supply from artificial berms (22,650 m(3)) was insufficient to initiate substantial channel shifting along the restored reach and a subsequent amplification of the sediment recharge. The combination of high-resolution topographic resurveys and sediment tracing was successful to evaluate the downstream propagation of sediment replenishment effects.

Abstract: International audience; We report the discovery of a new enveloped, spherical virus belonging to the Phenuiviridae family of negative ssRNA viruses associated with a massive outbreak in a French population of the endangered white-clawed crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes. We call this virus Bunya-like Brown Spot Virus (BBSV) and characterize it using transmission electronic microscopy, genome sequencing and clinical signs. Infected specimens show discolored brown spots on the cuticle. Using RNA-seq data we assembled a partial sequence for the L, M and S genome segments of BBSV. Phylogenetic analyses using all three segments show this virus is closely related to the Wenling crustacean virus 7 (China) and to a bunya-like virus found in feces of the European otter. Our survey of the mass mortality event indicates the virus is less virulent than the crayfish plague caused by Aphanomyces astaci. Overall, the discovery of BBSV provides a new important asset to monitor A. pallipes populations.

Abstract: International audience; Understanding the population dynamics of aquatic species and how inter-specific variation in demographic and life history traits influence population dynamics is crucial to define their conservation status and design appropriate protection measures.The abundance and biomass growth rates for 18 common European freshwater fish species were estimated using data spanning 1990-2011 for 546 sites across France. Fish-length trends were assessed using quantile regressions and correlations with life history traits were investigated.Amongst the 18 species, eleven of them have exhibited a significant decline in abundance and 14 species declined in biomass, seven remained stable or exhibited positive abundance growth rates; for four species, biomass was stable or increased. Of the demographic and ecological traits investigated, life-history strategy and maximum length were significantly correlated with species' population growth rates, revealing that the decline mainly concerned large-bodied species with slow life-histories.These results focus on 18 common European species representing 94% of fish captured during the study period within the French national monitoring programme and underline that more attention should be paid to the decline in common species. Population dynamics of widely distributed common species are key drivers of communities and of importance to ecosystem function.This study provides evidence of declines in common European freshwater fish species at a national scale and recommends conservation measures to favour recovery of most declining species. We highlight the crucial value of electrofishing monitoring programmes to assess freshwater fish species population trajectories and to support environmental management and conservation policy based on scientific evidences.

Abstract: International audience; Background: Professional pesticides exposure is associated with PD risk, but it remains unclear whether specific products, which strongly depend on farming type, are specifically involved. We performed a nationwide ecological study to examine the association of pesticides expenditures for the main farming types with PD incidence in French farmers. Methods: We used the French National Health Insurance database to identify incident PD cases in farmers (2010–2015). We combined data on pesticides expenditures with the agricultural census to compute pesticides expenditures for nine farming types in 2000 in 3571 French cantons. The association between pesticides expenditures and PD age/sex standardized incidence was examined using multilevel Poisson regression, adjusted for smoking, neurologists’ density, and deprivation index. Results: 10,282 incident PD cases were identified. Cantons with the highest pesticides expenditures for vineyards without designation of origin were characterized by 16% (95% CI = 6–28%) higher PD incidence (p-trend corrected for multiple testing = 0.006). This association was significant in men and older farmers. There was no association with pesticides expenditures for other farming types, including vineyards with designation of origin. Conclusions: PD incidence increased significantly with pesticides expenditures in vineyards without designation of origin characterized by high fungicide use. This result suggests that agricultural practices and pesticides used in these vineyards may play a role in PD and that farmers in these farms should benefit from preventive measures aiming at reducing exposure. Our study highlights the importance of considering farming type in studies on pesticides and PD and the usefulness of pesticides expenditures for exposure assessment.

Abstract: When implementing a sanitation system, the selection of treatment process can be difficult. Beyond removal efficiency and effluent concentrations, reliability should be taken into account. This study compares reliability of French vertical flow treatment wetlands (F-VFTW) with the four main decentralized wastewater treatment technologies in small communities in the French Overseas Territories (FOT). Analysis of 963 regulatory self-monitoring sampling campaigns performed on 213 wastewater treatment plants show that operational disruptions due to sludge loss and loss of nitrification are often reported for activated sludge technology; rotating biological contactors often suffer from weak settlement; facultative pond removal is limited by algae; and F-VFTW fulfills all the French regulatory objectives at a frequency of 90 to 95%. In addition, the data from this study are compared to a similar database from Brazil using a statistical approach (coefficient of reliability). Amongst the eight decentralized wastewater treatment technologies evaluated, F-VFTW appears to be the most appropriate for achieving the discharge standard with a reliability close to 95%. Its reliability to face both environmental (rainfall) and social (maintenance capacities) constraints is a key parameter.

Abstract: Suite à la première étude écologique réalisée en 2016 et à l’accueil de la Ryder Cup en 2018, les relevés naturalistes effectués en 2019 ont permis de caractériser l’évolution de la biodiversité du Golf National. Couvrant une superficie de 139 hectares entre plaines agricoles, zones urbaines et massifs forestiers, le golf s’inscrit dans un contexte écologique singulier en pleine mutation. En partie compris dans le périmètre du Parc naturel régional de la Haute vallée de Chevreuse, il apparaît comme un carrefour de dispersion et une zone refuge pour de nombreuses espèces des milieux ouverts et forestiers, dans un contexte d’urbanisation croissante.409 espèces animales et végétales ont ainsi pu être observées lors des prospectionsréalisées au cours de l’année 2019 et 922 données d’occurrence ont été intégrées àl’Inventaire National du Patrimoine Naturel (INPN). Basé sur des critères de patrimonialité, de diversité et de fonctionnalité écologique, et à l’image du constat déjà réalisé en 2017, le résultat de la mise en œuvre de l’Indicateur de Qualité Écologique (IQE) sur le site s’explique en particulier par :‐ Une richesse avifaunistique intéressante, appartenant à différents cortèges.‐ 13 espèces animales et végétales patrimoniales comptabilisées.‐ Une diversité d’habitats naturels et semi-naturels.‐ Une diversité de micro-habitats identifiés et potentiels.Mais également par :‐ La quasi-absence d’habitats considérés comme patrimoniaux.‐ De vastes surfaces artificialisées (comprenant la plupart des zones de jeu).‐ Des continuités écologiques encore peu développées (notamment la trame arborée).‐ La dissémination d’espèces végétales exotiques envahissantes suite aux travauxréalisés pour l’accueil de la Ryder Cup en 2018.Des aménagements et des mesures de gestion complémentaires sont proposés dans ce rapport, dans l’optique de favoriser la diversité biologique et augmenter l’intérêt écologique du site, tout en tenant compte des contraintes liées au jeu. Parmi les préconisations et les actions à mettre en œuvre, peuvent être citées :‐ La préservation des zones à enjeu et le suivi d’une gestion différenciée des différents espaces du golf en fonction de leurs usages, avec des interventions ciblées de l’automne à la fin de l’hiver (hauts roughs en particulier).‐ La préservation de micro-habitats nécessaires au développement des espèces.‐ La plantation d’arbres et d’arbustes (haies, massifs) afin de recréer des continuités pour le déplacement des espèces et densifier les massifs existants.‐ La sensibilisation des personnels et des usagers du site aux enjeux debiodiversité, notamment par le biais de guide techniques et de formations.

Abstract: Background Obama nungara is a species of land flatworm originating from South America; the species was recently described and distinguished from a similar species, Obama marmorata. Obama nungara has invaded several countries of Europe, but the extent of the invasion has not been thoroughly mapped. Methods In this article, based on a five and a half-year survey undertaken by citizen science, which yielded 530 records from 2013 to 2018, we analysed information about the invasion of Metropolitan France by O. nungara. We also investigated the variability of newly obtained cytochrome c oxidase 1 (COI) sequences of specimens from France, Italy and Switzerland. Results Obama nungara was recorded from 72 of the 96 Departments of Metropolitan France. The species is especially abundant along the Atlantic coast, from the Spanish border to Brittany, and along the Mediterranean coast, from the Spanish border to the Italian border. More than half of the records were from an altitude below 50 m, and no record was from above 500 m; mountainous regions such as the Alps, Pyrenees and Massif Central are not invaded. Local abundance can be impressive, with 100 of specimens found in a small garden. An analysis of our new COI sequences, combined with published sequences of specimens from several countries, confirmed that three clades comprise the species. The first clade, ‘Brazil’, is currently confined to this country in South America; the second clade, ‘Argentina 2’, was found in Argentina and in Europe, only in Spain; and the third, ‘Argentina 1’, was found in Argentina and in Europe, in Spain, Portugal, France, UK, Italy, Belgium, and Switzerland. This suggests that two clades of O. nungara from Argentina have invaded Europe, with one widely spread. Discussion The present findings strongly suggest that O. nungara is a highly invasive species and that the population which has invaded several countries in Europe comes from Argentina. The wide dispersion of the species and its reported local abundance, combined with the predatory character of the species, make O. nungara a potential threat to the biodiversity and ecology of the native soil fauna in Europe, and probably the most threatening species of all invasive land planarians present in Europe.

Abstract: International audience; Over 100 000 structures (dams, weirs, bridges, box culverts and culverts, etc.) have been inventoried in French rivers. Fragmentation of natural habitats has been acknowledged as one of the main causes of biodiversity loss. At different points in their life cycle, many species need to move freely, occasionally over large distances, in order to access specific habitats conducive to their growth, reproduction, feeding, rest and/or protection. The EU Water framework directive (WFD, 2000), thanks to efforts by the international community, highlighted the value of gaining knowledge of, preserving and restoring ecological continuity in hydrosystems and riparian corridors. In the French tropical islands of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, a survey still under way has revealed the existence of over one thousand obstacles in rivers. But virtually all indigenous fish and macro-crustacean species in these territories move between the marine, estuarine and river environments in fulfilling their life cycle. Consequently, they are highly sensitive to physical barriers in rivers. How can the passability of these obstacles be assessed? For which species and types of structure? Is the scientific knowledge currently available concerning the French overseas territories sufficient to develop a standardised assessment and diagnostic procedure? It was with these questions in mind that the French Biodiversity Agency, in conjunction with the respective Environmental Directorates and Water Offices in the overseas territories, and in a partnership with the Ocea Consult' and Écogea consulting firms, decided to adapt the ICE (Information on the Continuity of Ecosystems) method, originally designed for continental France, to the conditions prevalent in the French tropical islands. This book in the Knowledge for action series pulls together and clearly presents the main scientific and technical knowledge available on ecological continuity for fish and macro-crustaceans in the overseas territories, the physical capabilities of the species in question, the various types of obstacles encountered and their potential impacts. Providing in-depth information and richly illustrated, it offers readers a precise description of the ICE method, its basic principles and applications, and instructs on how to implement the method in one's own local environment.

Abstract: The health of the ocean, central to human well-being, has now reached a critical point. Most fish stocks are overexploited, climate change and increased dissolved carbon dioxide are changing ocean chemistry and disrupting species throughout food webs, and the fundamental capacity of the ocean to regulate the climate has been altered. However, key technical, organizational, and conceptual scientific barriers have prevented the identification of policy levers for sustainability and transformative action. Here, we recommend key strategies to address these challenges, including (1) stronger integration of sciences and (2) ocean-observing systems, (3) improved science-policy interfaces, (4) new partnerships supported by (5) a new ocean-climate finance system, and (6) improved ocean literacy and education to modify social norms and behaviors. Adopting these strategies could help establish ocean science as a key foundation of broader sustainability transformations.

Abstract: This study aimed to describe the influence of different electrofishing engine configurations on electric field dispersion in water. Several experiments with original results are included. The aims were to (i) assess the equivalent electrode resistances and the output voltage at the anode, (ii) assess the influence of electrode misuse on the dispersal of the electric field in water, (iii) assess the influence of the duty cycle and the frequency on the radius of attraction around the anode, and (iv) set the voltage and the duty cycle based on information from models for backpack and bankside electrofishing engines. A synthesis of equivalent electrode resistances from different studies was created. Using an oxidised anode induced a decrease in the radius of attraction. Frequency had no influence on the radius of attraction, in contrast to the duty cycle. Models including the voltage and the duty cycle were created to enable the configuration of electrofishing engines.

Abstract: Several important vegetable crops grown outdoors in temperate climates in Europe can be damaged by the root-feeding larvae of Diptera (Delia radicum, Delia floralis, Chamaepsila rosae, Delia platura, Delia florilega, Delia antiqua). Knowledge of pest insect phenology is a key component of any Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy, and this review considers the methods used to monitor and forecast the occurrence of root-feeding flies as a basis for decision-making by growers and the ways that such information can be applied. It has highlighted some current management approaches where such information is very useful for decision support, for example, the management of C. rosae with insecticidal sprays and the management of all of these pests using crop covers. There are other approaches, particularly those that need to be applied at sowing or transplanting, where knowledge of pest phenology and abundance is less necessary. Going forward, it is likely that the number of insecticidal control options available to European vegetable growers will diminish and they will need to move from a strategy which often involves using a single ‘silver bullet’ to a combination of approaches/tools with partial effects (applied within an IPM framework). For the less-effective, combined methods, accurate information about pest phenology and abundance and reliable decision support are likely to be extremely important.

Abstract: International audience; The Asian hornet is an invasive predator of honey bees in Western Europe. The Asian hornet-related risk of bee colony mortality has motivated the development of biological and physical control methods over the past years. Although the technical cost–benefit ratio has been established for most of these control methods, it is still unclear whether such methods can reduce the detrimental effects of the Asian hornet on European honey bees. In this study, we investigated the potential benefits of a biodiversity-friendly control method, the beehive muzzle. We observed the flight activity of bees and the predation behaviour of the Asian hornets at the beehive entrance of 22 pairs of honey bee colonies, each with one muzzle-equipped colony and one control colony without muzzle, in France. We measured HF (bee homing failure due to hornet predation of bees) and FP (foraging paralysis: the stop of flight activity in beehives due to hovering hornets), and estimated the mortality probability of the colonies using a mechanistic modelling approach. The beehive muzzle did not reduce the hornet-related HF, but drastically reduced FP. Moreover, the muzzle increased the survival probability of hornet-stressed colonies up to 51% in context of high abundance of Asian hornets based on theoretical simulations. These results suggest that installing beehive muzzles can mitigate the detrimental effect of the Asian hornet on European honey bees. This low-cost technique does not lead to any environmental impacts and could therefore be recommended to beekeepers as an effective biodiversity-friendly method of Asian hornet control.

Abstract: This work is a contribution to the Selune River dams removal project. This study was supported by a grant from the French Seine-Normandy Water Agency (AESN); Maintaining connectivity in aquatic ecosystems is important to ensure adequate ecological functioning. A large dam removal project in the Selune River (Normandy, France) would reconnect 827 km(2) of catchment area to the sea. Only the downstream section of the Selune is currently available to diadromous fish, which migrate between freshwater and the marine environment. In particular, managers focus on the future potential abundance of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, for conservation and fishery purposes. As in stream channel habitat drives carrying capacity of juvenile salmon, salmon abundance is usually inferred from intensive and linear habitat surveys. However, this approach is neither cost-effective for large-scale surveys nor feasible for riverbed sections with low accessibility for measurement with traditional methods, e.g. dam lakes. We used well-defined relationships between gradient, hydrology and channel habitat structure to construct a simple model to estimate potential suitable habitat for juvenile salmon. Using fine-scale habitat data from nearby rivers, we parameterized a linear mixed model to estimate the area of suitable habitat based on simple physical descriptors of river characteristics. We compared our predictions to fine-scale habitat surveys on the upper Selune. Using only slope and width, our model was able to explain 80% of the variance in suitable habitat. Estimates indicated that dam removal on the Selune River would generate a threefold increase in suitable habitat for juveniles. This could increase the mean number of adult salmon returning to the river by 1420.9 (s.e. = 1015.5). More generally, this model provides an alternative and cost-effective tool to help better manage salmon populations in rivers impacted by dams.

Abstract: International audience; An assessment of 1 286 validated data from 231 on-site sanitation facilities was carried during 6 years in France. Facilities are classified in 3 families, 13 categories and 33 systems according to sanitation processes and industrial technologies developed by manufacturer. Classes of treated wastewater quality were created based on the analysis of the French regulation used for wastewater treatment. The frequency of curative maintenance is analyzed using fuzzy logic. Then, these two criteria are jointly analyzed and allow assessing 18 systems out of 33. Authors, members of the national public group "assessment of on-site sanitation systems", provide objective information on the quality of treated wastewater and curative maintenance of twenty systems under real operating conditions. Systems that obtain an "acceptable" quality class for both treated wastewater quality and frequency of curative maintenance are all from the Biofilm Systems on Fine Media (BSFM) family: i) traditional sand filter (S1) and 2 approved systems: ii) constructed wetland system (CW) and iii) one system of the coconut shavings category (CS2). Hence, only 12% of approved systems studied in this project are "acceptable" for both treated wastewater quality and frequency of curative maintenance. This study gives scientific and technical information for political stakeholders at different territory scales: Municipality, Public entities in charge of the on-site sanitation service (Spanc), French departments, Water agencies, Ministry in charge of on-site wastewater treatment and European Commission.; Le suivi in situ des installations d'assainissement non collectif (ANC) a duré 6 ans et a permis de collecter 1286 données validées sur 231 installations. Les installations sont classées en 3 familles, 13 filières et 33 dispositifs selon des critères liés aux processus d'épuration et aux techniques industrielles développées par les fabricants. Des classes de qualité des eaux usées traitées ont été élaborées, à partir de l'analyse de la réglementation française technique appliquée au traitement des eaux usées. La fréquence d'entretien curatif des installations est analysée par un outil utilisant la logique floue. Ces deux critères sont ensuite analysés conjointement et permettent de qualifier 18 des 33 dispositifs évalués. Les auteurs, constitués en groupe national public « suivi in situ des installations d'assainissement non collectif », fournissent ainsi des informations objectives d'une vingtaine de dispositifs d'ANC dans leurs conditions réelles de fonctionnement. Les dispositifs qui obtiennent une classe de qualité « acceptable » à la fois pour la qualité des eaux usées traitées et la fréquence d'entretien curatif sont trois dispositifs de la famille CFSF : i) le filtre à sable traditionnel de la filière « sable » (S1) ; deux dispositifs agréés : ii) le dispositif étudié de la filière « végétaux » (FPR) et iii) l'un des deux dispositifs étudiés de la filière « copeaux de coco » (CC2). Abstract: International audience; Species Distribution Models (SDMs) are often used to predict the potential range of invasive species. Unfortunately, most studies do not evaluate variables relevance before selecting them to fit their models. Moreover, multiple variables such as climate and land use may drive species distribution at different spatial scales but most studies either use a single type of drivers, or combine multiple types without respecting their operating scale. We propose a three steps framework to overcome this limitation. First, use SDMs to select the most relevant climatic variables to predict a given species distribution, at continental scale. Then, characterize the species-habitat relationships, at a local scale, to produce species and area specific habitat filters. Finally, combine both information, each obtained at a relevant scale, to refine climatic predictions according to habitat suitability. We illustrate this framework with 14,794 Asian hornet (Vespa velutina nigrithorax) records. We show that integrating multiple drivers, while still respecting their scale of effect, produced a potential range 55.9% smaller than that predicted using the climatic model alone, suggesting a systematic overestimation in many published predictions. This general framework illustrated by a well-documented invasive species is applicable to other taxa and scenarios of future climate and land-cover changes.

Abstract: European eel (Anguilla anguilla) recruitment has been declining at least since the early 1980s at the scale of its distribution area. Since the population is panmictic, its stock assessment should be carried out on a range-wide basis. However, assessing the overall stock during the continental phase remains difficult given its widespread distribution among heterogeneous and separate river catchments. Hence, it is currently considered by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) more feasible to use glass eel recruitment data to assess the status of the overall population. In this study, we used Glass Eel Recruitment Estimation Model (GEREM) to estimate annual recruitment (i) at the river catchment level, a scale for which data are available, (ii) at an intermediate scale (6 European regions), and (iii) at a larger scale (Europe). This study provides an estimate of the glass eel recruitment trend through a single index, which gathers all recruitment time-series available at the European scale. Results confirmed an overall recruitment decline to dramatically low levels in 2009 (3.5% of the 1960–1979 recruitment average) and highlighted a more pronounced decline in the North Sea area compared to elsewhere in Europe.

Abstract: Water scarcity is a harsh reality for many regions. As a result, reducing losses from water supply systems (WSSs) is of great environmental importance around the world. In France, water suppliers are legally bound to reduce losses from their WSSs through loss reduction action plans (LRAPs). For these plans to work, they need to suit the area to which they are applied. Their impacts on water bodies (WBs) and the environment also need to be taken into account. This paper explains an innovative approach to fulfil these objectives. It involves adding two elements to the design of LRAPs: calculation of a water abstraction and discharge balance (WADB) and analysis of environmental effects (AEE) relating to loss reduction actions, based on life cycle assessment. The usefulness and the practicality of this approach are examined through two practical case studies. It is shown that the WADB allows LRAPs to be configured to optimise water savings in the most sensitive WBs. AEE makes it possible to identify a loss reduction level above which the overall environmental balance becomes negative. While the LRAP design and the WADB calculation methods are ready to be used by WSS managers, the AEE still requires further improvement.

Abstract: International audience; Visual inspection of the flow status on headwater conducted in summer as part of the ONDE system make it possible to characterize the current hydrological situation and monitor its evolution, allowing comparisons of situations (e.g. drought extension in both time and space) over specific periods. However, ONDE observations do not provide any information on the persistence of drying between two successive observation dates, which is essential for example to understand the impact of flow intermittence on the distribution and persistence of aquatic species. An empirical model has been developed to predict the Regional Probability of Drying (RPoD) over the whole of continental France. This model is based on observations from the ONDE network and uses daily data input characterizing surface hydrology and groundwater level. The robustness of the models was tested against observations from the ONDE network in 2017, which were excluded from the calibration phase. Between 2012 and 2016, the model performed well in most regions of France. The performances in 2017 confirm the predictive capacity of the model. The results show the value of using ONDE data to characterize the river flow regime of rivers in headwaters and two examples of the application of the models developed are finally proposed: an identification of the regions most affected by drying between 2012 and 2017 and a reconstruction of the Regional Probability of Drying since 1989.; Les observations visuelles de l'état d'écoulement des petits cours d'eau menées l'été dans le cadre de l'observatoire ONDE permettent d'apprécier une situation hydrologique à un moment donné et d'en suivre son évolution, de réaliser des comparaisons interannuelles des situations à la même période, ou de suivre l'intensité des étiages année après année. Cependant, les observations ONDE ne donnent pas d'information sur la persistance des assèchements entre deux dates d'observation, information pourtant indispensable pour comprendre l'impact de l'intermittence sur la distribution et la persistance des espèces aquatiques. Un modèle empirique a été développé pour prédire la probabilité journalière d'assèchement (assec) à l'échelle régionale (RPoD) sur l'ensemble de la France métropolitaine. Ce modèle a été calé sur les observations du réseau ONDE et utilise en entrée des données journalières caractérisant l'hydrologie de surface et la piézométrie. La robustesse des modèles a été éprouvée à l'aide des observations du réseau ONDE de l'année 2017 exclues de la phase de calage. Entre 2012 et 2016, le modèle obtient de bonnes performances sur une majorité des régions de France. Les performances en 2017 confirment la capacité prédictive du modèle. Les résultats montrent l'intérêt d'utiliser les données ONDE pour caractériser le régime hydrologique des cours d'eau en tête de bassin versant et deux exemples d'application des modèles développés sont proposées : une identification des régions les plus touchées par les assecs entre 2012 et 2017 et une reconstitution de la RPoD depuis 1989.

A number of uses are concerned (drinking water, irrigation, hydropower...) and they can be strongly affected by water shortages. Therefore, there is a need of early anticipation of low-flow periods to improve water management. This is strengthened by the perspective of having more severe summer low-flows in the context of climate change. Several French institutes (Irstea, BRGM, Météo-France, EDF and Lorraine University) have been collaborating to develop an operational tool for low-flow forecasting, called PREMHYCE. It is tested in real time on 118 catchments in metropolitan France since 2017, in cooperation with operational services which provide streamflow observations and use low-flow forecasts from the tool. PREMHYCE includes five hydrological models which can be calibrated on gauged catchments and which assimilate flow observations. Low-flow forecasts can be issued up to 90 days ahead, based on ensemble streamflow prediction (ESP) using historical climatic data as ensembles of future input scenarios. These climatic data (precipitation, evapotranspiration and temperature) are provided by Météo-France with the daily gridded SAFRAN reanalysis on the 1958-2018 period, which includes a wide range of conditions. The tool provides text files and graphical representation of forecasted low-flows, and probability to be under low-flow thresholds provided by users. Outputs from the different hydrological models can be combined into a simple multi-model approach to improve robustness of the forecasts. The presentation will show the main characteristics of this operational tool and results on the recent low-flow periods.; De nombreux usages de l'eau peuvent être fortement impactés par les pénuries d'eau (eau potable, irrigation, hydroéléctricité...). Il est donc nécessaire d'anticiper plus précocement les périodes d'étiage afin d'améliorer la gestion de l'eau. Ceci est renforcé par la perspective d'avoir des étiages plus sévères dans le contexte du changement climatique. Plusieurs instituts français (Irstea, BRGM, Météo-France, EDF, Université de Lorraine) ont collaboré pour développer un outil opérationnel de prévision des bas débits, PREMHYCE. Il est testé en temps réel sur 270 bassins versants de France métropolitaine depuis 2017. PREMHYCE comprend cinq modèles hydrologiques qui peuvent être calés sur des bassins versants jaugés et assimilent les dernières observations de débit. Les prévisions de débits sont émises jusqu'à un horizon de 90 jours selon l'approche Ensemble Streamflow Prediction (ESP), qui utilise des données météorologiques historiques comme ensemble de scénarios d'entrée. Ces données météorologiques (précipitations, évapotranspiration et température) sont issues de la réanalyse SAFRAN journalière fournie par Météo-France, sur la période 1958-2018, qui couvre un large éventail de conditions. Les performances de l'outil sont analysées sur les étiages 2017-2018 pour 38 bassins versants sur lesquels les prévisions sont disponibles pour tous les modèles. Ces derniers ont montré des capacités d'anticipation de l'ordre de 60 jours en moyenne. La plupart des modèles a présenté une précision satisfaisante pour prévoir le QMNA observé à courte échéance (j+7), avec des prévisions plus dispersées à plus longue échéance (j+30).

Abstract: WOS:000502962100001; International audience; In marine ecosystems, carbon export is driven by particle flux which is modulated by aggregation, remineralization, and grazing processes. Zooplankton contribute to the sinking flux through the egestion of fast sinking fecal pellets but may also attenuate the flux by tearing apart phytoplankton aggregates into small pieces through swimming activity or direct ingestion. Freely suspended cells, artificial monospecific aggregates from two different diatom species (Chaetoceros neogracile and Skeletonema merinol) and natural aggregates of Melosira sp. were independently incubated with five different copepod species (Acadia clausi, Temora longicomis, Calanus helgolandicus, Euterpina acutifrons, and Calanus hyperboreus). During the grazing experiments initiated with free diatoms, E. acutifrons feeding activity evidenced by ingestion rates of 157 +/- 155 ng Chl a ind(-1) d(-1), induced a significant increase of S. marinoi aggregation. Transparent exopolymeric particles (TEP) production was only slightly boosted by the presence of grazers and turbulences created by swimming may be the main trigger of the aggregation processes. All copepods studied were able to graze on aggregates and quantitative estimates led to chlorophyll a ingestion rates (expressed in Chla a equivalent, i.e., the sum of chlorophyll a and pheopigments in their guts) ranging from 4 to 23 ng Chl a(eq) ind(-1) d(-1). The relation between equivalent spherical diameters (ESDs) and sinking velocities of the aggregates did not significantly change after grazing, suggesting that copepod grazing did not affect aggregate density as also shown by Si:C and C:N ratios. Three main trends in particle dynamics could be identified and further linked to the copepod feeding behavior and the size ratio between prey and predators: (1) Fragmentation of S. marinoi aggregates by the cruise feeder T. longicomis and of Melosira sp. aggregates by C. hyperboreus at prey to predator size ratios larger than 15; (2) no change of particle dynamics in the presence of the detritic cruise feeder E acutifrons; and finally (3) re-aggregation of C. neogracile and S. marinoi aggregates when the two filter feeders A. clausi and C. helgolandicus were grazing on aggregate at prey to predator size ratios lower than 10. Aggregation of freely suspended cells or small aggregates was facilitated by turbulence resulting from active swimming of small copepods. However, stronger turbulence created by larger cruise feeders copepods prevent aggregate formation and even made them vulnerable to breakage.

Abstract: International audience; Seven South Pacific anguillid eel species live from New Guinea to French Polynesia, but their spawning areas and life histories are mostly unknown despite previous sampling surveys. A July–October 2016 research cruise was conducted to study the spawning areas and times, and larval distributions of South Pacific anguillid eels, which included a short 155°E station-line northeast of New Guinea and five long transects (5–25°S, 160°E–140°W) crossing the South Equatorial (SEC) and other currents. This survey collected nearly 4000 anguilliform leptocephali at 179 stations using an Isaacs-Kidd Midwater Trawl accompanied by 104 CTD casts. Based on morphometric observations and DNA sequencing, 74 anguillid leptocephali were collected, which in the southern areas included 29 larvae of six species: Anguilla bicolor pacifica, A. marmorata, A. australis, A. reinhardtii, A. megastoma, and A. obscura (all anguillid species of the region were caught except A. dieffenbachii). Small A. australis (9.0–16.8 mm) and A. reinhardtii (12.4, 12.5 mm) leptocephali were collected south of the Solomon Islands, other A. australis (10.8–12.0 mm) larvae were caught northwest of Fiji along with an A. obscura (20.0 mm) larva, and an A. marmorata (7.8 mm) larva was collected near Samoa. Considering collection sites, larval ages from otolith analysis, and westward SEC drift, multiple spawning locations occurred from south of the Solomon Islands and the Fiji area (16–20 days old larvae) to near Samoa (19 days old larva) during June and July in areas where high-salinity Subtropical Underwater (STUW, ~150 m depth) and the warm, low-salinity surface Fresh Pool were present. Five long hydrographic sections showed the strong Fresh Pool in the west and the STUW formation area in the east.

Abstract: [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [ADD1_IRSTEA]Systèmes aquatiques soumis à des pressions multiples(IF 2.61 [2018]; Q1]; International audience; During the last decades, the highly-anthropized Seine estuary has been impacted by modification of its habitats (building of a major extension of Le Havre harbour, i.e. Port2000) and a significant natural decrease in freshwater discharge. A Before/After analysis, using a toolbox of indicators, was applied to characterize the effects of both events on the estuarine ecosystem status. We selected from existing tool boxes several indicators derived from food web modelling or community composition data, such as biodiversity indicators, a guild-based index (i.e. Estuarine and Lagoon Fish Index ELFI) and ecological network analysis (ENA) indices. ENA and biodiversity indicators were applied on six spatial boxes describing the Seine estuary and its outlet. Results showed an increase in taxonomic and functional richness over time, mainly due to marinisation, and significant changes in food-web properties in relation to Port2000. ENA indices appeared as a promising method in ecological status assessment, especially for estuaries considered as inherently disturbed.

Abstract: International audience; The Aquitanian pike Esox aquitanicus is an endemic species of the South-West of France. It is threatened by the hybridization with the Northern pike Esox lucius. So far, hybrid determination was established with molecular tools only. The purpose of this study is to find morphological traits in order to differentiate hybrids from the two parental species; we looked at the three criteria distinguishing E. aquitanicus from E. lucius: skin colour pattern, lateral scale numbers and snout length. Our results showed that hybrids can actually be distinhguished from E. lucius (shorter snout and fewer lateral scales) and E. aquitanicus (higher lateral scales count). The skin colour pattern is however irrelevant, as the pattern of both species is encountered among hybrids. Finally, the best trait to identify hybrids is the lateral scale number, which is intermediate between those of the parental species (114 to 119 vs. 104 to 107 for E. aquitanicus and (115)120 to 136(146) for E. lucius). This could be helpful for managers in the conservation of the Aquitanian pike. Nevertheless, the results of this study need to be confirmed with a larger sampling.; Le brochet aquitain Esox aquitanicus Denys, Dettai, Persat, Hautecoeur & Keith, 2014 est une espèce endémique du sud-ouest de la France. Il est menacé par l'hybridation avec le brochet commun Esox lucius Linnaeus, 1758. Jusqu'à présent, seul l'outil moléculaire permettait la détermination des hybrides. Le but de cette étude est de trouver des caractères morphologiques pour caractériser les hybri-des des deux espèces parentales à partir des trois critères distinguant l'E. aquitanicus de l'E. lucius : le patron de coloration du corps, le nombre d'écailles sur la ligne latérale et la longueur du museau. nos résultats ont démontré que les spécimens hybrides pouvaient être discriminés d'E. lucius par un museau plus court et un plus faible nombre d'écailles sur la ligne latérale, et d'E. aquitanicus seulement par un plus grand nombre d'écailles sur la ligne latérale. Le patron de coloration du corps des deux espèces est rencontré chez les hybrides. Ainsi, le meilleur caractère pour identifier les hybrides est le nombre d'écailles sur la ligne latérale ; il est intermédiaire comparé aux espèces parentales (114 à 119 vs. 104 à 107 pour E. aquitanicus et (115)120 à 136(146) pour E. lucius). Il sera utile pour les gestion-naires en conservation du brochet aquitain. néanmoins, les résultats de cette étude nécessitent d'être confirmés avec un plus grand échantillonnage en aquaculture.

Abstract: International audience; Marine protected areas face numerous conflicts associated with the implementation of conservation measures. These conflicts generate costs, prevent progress, make cooperation between stakeholders difficult and create risks of ineffectiveness. Although they are often concealed or circumvented, they also offer opportunities for new connections and collective innovation. Rather than leaving them to these kinds of avoidance strategies, conflicts were the subject of a Knowledge Café event at the Fourth International Marine Protected Area Congress to compare the perspectives of managers, decision‐makers and scientists on dealing with conflict. This contribution presents the conceptual framework for discussions during and after the Fourth International Marine Protected Area Congress and the operational and research avenues they open up. Cross‐referencing the results of this collective approach and research contributions makes it possible to characterize the diversity and complexity of conflicts in marine protected areas and the driving forces behind them and analyse resolution strategies. Instead of avoidance strategies, the causes and consequences of the idea of understanding and valuing conflicts is explored, along with operational approaches to achieving this.
