This paper addresses the problem of designing a supply chain (SC) according to sustainability aspects. It identifies a research gap where an optimisation model to address the location, inventory and transportation decision in a sustainable SC applied to a copper mining industry by complementarily using a simulation model to assess SC performance in different scenarios is needed. For this purpose, we propose a simulation model based on system dynamics (SD) to assess SC performance and to support decision making. The basis of the simulation model structure is a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming model that aims to minimise total economic, emissions and social costs, and to also contemplate social impacts. We consider a real copper mining industry problem to illustrate this. We obtain a solution using a mathematical programming model and a simulation model. The optimisation results show improved SC performance in cost and emission reduction terms, and an improved social impact. The simulation model presents a near-optimal result and allows the possibility of anticipating adverse scenarios. Future research is oriented to other real-world applications, and to: consider alternative inventory policies; contemplate a stochastic approach; add new production and routing decisions; develop a hybrid multi-agent SD model.

The influence of the geographical location on the chemical composition of commercial Sauvignon Blanc wines was investigated. The assay was carried out on Sauvignon Blanc wines from three cold-climate valleys in Central Chile, Casablanca, Leyda, and San Antonio. The analyses revealed clear variations in some chemical parameters, especially in titratable acidity, which was higher in the geographical areas closest to the Pacific Ocean, such as the Leyda and San Antonio valleys. Regarding the composition of low-molecular-weight phenolic compounds, 17 compounds were found, and the results show that the Casablanca valley exhibits a greater abundance of monomeric flavanols, such as (+)-catechin, whereas the Leyda valley shows a higher abundance in flavonols and phenolic acids esterified with tartaric acid. Concerning the aromatic compound profile, the wines from the Casablanca valley showed a greater abundance of esters, C13 norisoprenoids, and some terpenes. The PLS-DA analysis revealed some differences, especially between wines from Casablanca and Leyda, demonstrating that the difference in the chemical composition of the wines was influenced by the geographical area.

[EN] In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the integration of various Emerging Technologies in the field of Education, especially immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). This research aims at assessing the perceived usefulness of these technologies by pre-service teachers at the Faculty of Educational Sciences of the University of Granada, specifically in the STEM field, and how they evaluate their potential for integration into their future teaching practices. A mixed-methods approach was used, including a pre-questionnaire administered to the entire population (N=544) to describe the participants’ perceptions, followed by a post-test conducted with a subset (N=58) after having participated in a Complementary Training program focusing on the creation of immersive educational resources using the CoSpaces platform. The results revealed a high perceived utility of immersive technologies, highlighting their potential for enhancing teaching and learning in the STEM domain. However, challenges related to ease of integration and the lack of adequate training in the use of these technologies were identified. The importance of promoting teacher training and digital literacy to fully leverage the benefits of these emerging technologies in education is emphasized. En la presente investigación se tiene por objetivo valorar la utilidad que le atribuyen los docentes en Formación Inicial en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación de la Universidad de Granada a este tipo de tecnologías, específicamente en el ámbito STEM, y cómo evalúan la capacidad de integrarlas en sus futuras prácticas docentes. Se utilizó una metodología mixta, donde se aplicó un cuestionario previo a toda la población (N=544) para describir las valoraciones de los participantes, seguido de un post test a una submuestra (N=58) luego de participar de una Formación Complementaria para la creación de recursos educativos inmersivos desarrollados con la plataforma CoSpaces. Los resultados revelaron una alta utilidad atribuida a las tecnologías inmersivas, destacando su potencial para mejorar la enseñanza y el aprendizaje en el ámbito STEM. Sin embargo, se identificaron desafíos relacionados con la facilidad de integración y la falta de formación adecuada en el uso de estas tecnologías. Se enfatiza la importancia de promover la capacitación docente y la alfabetización digital para aprovechar plenamente los beneficios de estas tecnologías emergentes en la educación. Se sugiere la realización de futuras investigaciones que profundicen en estrategias de formación docente y que aborden otros contextos educativos para ampliar el conocimiento sobre las implicaciones y ventajas de las tecnologías inmersivas.

Organic waste generation in aquaculture worldwide requires circular economy approaches. The revalorization of wastes in the Chilean salmon industry could be a potential soil amendment. We investigated the thermo-drying process on salmon sludge, evaluating it as an alternative to reusing in horticulture. The chemical characterization of untreated sludge (wet sludges: WS) and dried sludges (DS) were evaluated with thermogravimetry, IR spectroscopy, and fluorescence. Additionally, the germination index of the DS was determined in L. sativa, R. sativus, and S. lycopersicum. The results show that DS reduces salinity, ammonium content, and pathogens compared to WS. During the thermic process, there were no significant decreases in organic matter, phosphorus, potassium, and humic and fulvic substances. The high salinity in DS inhibited seed germination. This research constituted a novel contribution to studying the DS as a strategy for horticultural production. In the same way, the drying technology for salmon sludge favored the management of wastes, contributing to the circular economy in both the agricultural and aquaculture sectors. However, we recommend considering that excessive incorporation of DS into germination substrates or direct application into the soil could affect the crop’s performance due to its high salinity.

Bacterial canker, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv syringae (Pss), is a serious disease of stone fruit orchards causing severe yield reductions and the death of entire trees. To analyze the response and to identify novel sources of Pss resistance in our rootstock breeding program, we used a novel, rapid and reliable leaf disk pathogenicity test to screen pre-breeding material constituted by interspecific hybrids of plum/peach/almond (‘AGAF’/‘ADAGAF’) or sweet cherry (‘PACIR’) species and commercial rootstocks with two Pss strains. Some ‘AGAF’/ ‘ADAGAF’ and all ‘PACIR’ rootstocks showed lower susceptibility than commercial rootstocks to Pss strains used. The reduced symptoms displayed by the ‘PACIR’ hybrids with Prunus lannesiana and P. incisa as genomic background suggest that these species could be novel sources of genetic resistance to Pss within the Cerasus subgenus. Histological and candidate gene expression analysis suggest a multi-tiered immune response of Prunus species to Pss attack with a higher callose deposition and activation of molecular mechanisms that would restrict the bacteria infection and help to maintain a better redox homeostasis and performance of ‘Marianna 2624′, a plum resistant genotype. Identification of Prunus species with resistance to Pss and the analysis of their immune response are the first step towards characterizing the underlying genetic mechanisms of resistance and introducing these traits into commercial germplasm.

The mechanical, thermal and gamma radiation attenuation properties of ethylene–propylene–diene monomer (EPDM)-based composites containing graphene nanoplatelets (GNs) and bismuth (III) oxide nanoparticles (B) were investigated. The use of polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a compatibilizer to improve the dispersion of the fillers was also investigated. The results showed that the combined use of these fillers resulted in a drastic increase in mechanical properties, reaching 123% and 83% of tensile strength and elongation at break, respectively, compared to those of EPDM. In contrast, the addition of PEG to composites containing EPDM GNs and B resulted in composites with lower values of mechanical properties compared to the EPDM/B/GN-based composite. However, the presence of PEG leads to obtaining a composite (EPDM/B/GNP) with a mass attenuation coefficient to gamma radiation (137Cs, 662 keV) superior to that composite without PEG. In addition, the composite EPDM, B and PEG exhibited an elongation at break 153% superior to unfilled EPDM. Moreover, the binary filler system consisting of 100 phr of bismuth (III) oxide and 10 phr of GN leads to reaching 61% of the linear damping coefficient of the EPDM composite compared to that value of the unfilled EPDM. The study of the morphology and the state of filler dispersion in the polymer matrix, obtained using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, respectively, provides a useful background for understanding the factors affecting the gamma radiation attenuation properties. Finally, the results also indicated that by adjusting the formulation, it is possible to tune the mechanical and thermal properties of EPDM composites reinforced with bismuth oxide and graphene nanoplatelets.

At the end of summer 2020, a moderate (~105 cells L−1) bloom of potential fish-killing Karenia spp. was detected in samples from a 24 h study focused on Dinophysis spp. in the outer reaches of the Pitipalena-Añihue Marine Protected Area. Previous Karenia events with devastating effects on caged salmon and the wild fauna of Chilean Patagonia had been restricted to offshore waters, eventually reaching the southern coasts of Chiloé Island through the channel connecting the Chiloé Inland Sea to the Pacific Ocean. This event occurred at the onset of the COVID-19 lockdown when monitoring activities were slackened. A few salmon mortalities were related to other fish-killing species (e.g., Margalefidinium polykrikoides). As in the major Karenia event in 1999, the austral summer of 2020 was characterised by negative anomalies in rainfall and river outflow and a severe drought in March. Karenia spp. appeared to have been advected in a warm (14–15 °C) surface layer of estuarine saline water (S > 21). A lack of daily vertical migration patterns and cells dispersed through the whole water column suggested a declining population. Satellite images confirmed the decline, but gave evidence of dynamic multifrontal patterns of temperature and chl a distribution. A conceptual circulation model is proposed to explain the hypothetical retention of the Karenia bloom by a coastally generated eddy coupled with the semidiurnal tides at the mouth of Pitipalena Fjord. Thermal fronts generated by (topographically induced) upwelling around the Tic Toc Seamount are proposed as hot spots for the accumulation of swimming dinoflagellates in summer in the southern Chiloé Inland Sea. The results here provide helpful information on the environmental conditions and water column structure favouring Karenia occurrence. Understanding and managing the response of marine ecosystems to human pressures including climate change requires reliable large-scale and multi-decadal information on the state of key populations. These populations include the pelagic animals that support ecosystem services including carbon export and fisheries. The use of research vessels to collect information using scientific nets and acoustics is being replaced with technologies such as autonomous moorings, gliders, and meta-genetics. Paradoxically, these newer methods sample pelagic populations at ever-smaller spatial scales, and ecological change might go undetected in the time needed to build up large-scale, long time series. These global-scale issues are epitomised by Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), which is concentrated in rapidly warming areas, exports substantial quantities of carbon and supports an expanding fishery, but opinion is divided on how resilient their stocks are to climatic change. Based on a workshop of 137 krill experts we identify the challenges of observing climate change impacts with shifting sampling methods and suggest three tractable solutions. These are to: improve overlap and calibration of new with traditional methods; improve communication to harmonise, link and scale up the capacity of new but localised sampling programs; and expand opportunities from other research platforms and data sources, including the fishing industry. Contrasting evidence for both change and stability in krill stocks illustrates how the risks of false negative and false positive diagnoses of change are related to the temporal and spatial scale of sampling. Given the uncertainty about how krill are responding to rapid warming we recommend a shift towards a fishery management approach that prioritises monitoring of stock status and can adapt to variability and change.

Community-based natural resource governance is increasingly valued by the leading international organizations that promote environmental conservation and sustainable development. At the same time, the ecosystems of the northeastern Andalusian mountains are intrinsically related to the long-standing presence of pastoralism and its different communal forms that have favored a very particular biocultural diversity and sustainable socio-ecological systems locally. Through a transdisciplinary anthropological and ecological study, we aimed to compare how different types of communal governance and pastoral mobilities impact pasturelands in the region. We focused on three contiguous mountain pastoral commons, those of Castril, Santiago de la Espada, and Pontones, which exhibit different forms of communal organization and two main transhumant types of mobility: long-distance and short-distance transhumance. We conducted long-term ethnographic fieldwork with year-round participatory observations of social life, pastoral practices, and governance systems, and performed botanical and soil analyses. As a general result, we found that local pastoralism positively impacts the environment. There were differences between commons and mobility regimes, with a positive impact related mainly to closer forms of cooperation between herders and daily guiding of flocks, along with seasonal long-distance transhumance, especially when the latter is combined with stricter formal community rules. Within the current context highly determined by public subventions, particularly from the EU, primarily directed at pastureland management’s administrative and economic aspects, local governance increasingly favors these methods over the conservation of traditional, sustainable uses of pastures. Four new halogen-bonded cocrystals of biological methylxanthines, named caffeine, theophylline and theobromine, have been prepared with 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene as a halogen bond donor by mechanochemical and solution processes. For theophylline, N⋯I and N⋯O interactions were observed, while for caffeine and theobromine, only N⋯I was detected. The solids were characterized by PXRD, SC-XRD, FTIR and thermal methods (TGA-DSC analyses). In addition, the solid-state photoluminescence properties of the methylxanthines and their respective cocrystals have been studied and quantum chemistry calculations have been performed to rationalise and understand the electronic and optical properties of all compounds. This work provides a triad of natural methylxanthines capable of forming halogen-bonded multicomponent systems that can give rise to a cocrystal-to-crystal transformation with off-on luminescence activation.

A significant gap in exposure data for most livestock and zoonotic pathogens is common for several Latin America deer species. This study examined the seroprevalence against 13 pathogens in 164 wild and captive southern pudu from Chile between 2011 and 2023. Livestock and zoonotic pathogen antibodies were detected in 22 of 109 wild pudus (20.18%; 95% CI: 13.34–29.18) and 17 of 55 captive pudus (30.91%; 95% CI: 19.52–44.96), including five Leptospira interrogans serovars (15.38% and 10.71%), Toxoplasma gondii (8.57% and 37.50%), Chlamydia abortus (3.03% and 12.82%), Neospora caninum (0.00% and 9.52%), and Pestivirus (8.00% and 6.67%). Risk factors were detected for Leptospira spp., showing that fawn pudu have statistically significantly higher risk of positivity than adults. In the case of T. gondii, pudu living in “free-range” have a lower risk of being positive for this parasite. In under-human-care pudu, a Pestivirus outbreak is the most strongly suspected as the cause of abortions in a zoo in the past. This study presents the first evidence of Chlamydia abortus in wildlife in South America and exposure to T. gondii, L. interrogans, and N. caninum in wild ungulate species in Chile. High seroprevalence of livestock pathogens such as Pestivirus and Leptospira Hardjo in wild animals suggests a livestock transmission in Chilean template forest.

We present an analytical method to estimate pure quantum states using a minimum of three measurement bases in any finite-dimensional Hilbert space. This is optimal as two bases are insufficient to construct an informationally complete positive operator-valued measurement (IC-POVM) for pure states. We demonstrate our method using a binary tree structure, providing an algorithmic path for implementation. The performance of the method is evaluated through numerical simulations, showcasing its effectiveness for quantum state estimation.

Detecting antibiotic residues is vital to minimize their impact. Yet, existing methods are complex and costly. Biosensors offer an alternative. While many biosensors detect various antibiotics, specific ones for beta-lactams are lacking. To address this gap, a biosensor based on the AmpC beta-lactamase regulation system (ampR-ampC) from Pseudomonas sp. IB20, an Antarctic isolate, was developed in this study. The AmpR-AmpC system is well-conserved in the genus Pseudomonas and has been extensively studied for its involvement in peptidoglycan recycling and beta-lactam resistance. To create the biosensor, the ampC coding sequence was replaced with the mCherry fluorescent protein as a reporter, resulting in a transcriptional fusion. This construct was then inserted into Escherichia coli SN0301, a beta-lactam hypersensitive strain, generating a whole-cell biosensor. The biosensor demonstrated dose-dependent detection of penicillins, cephalosporins and carbapenems. However, the most interesting aspect of this work is the high sensitivity presented by the biosensor in the detection of carbapenems, as it was able to detect 8 pg/mL of meropenem and 40 pg/mL of imipenem and reach levels of 1-10 ng/mL for penicillins and cephalosporins. This makes the biosensor a powerful tool for the detection of beta-lactam antibiotics, specifically carbapenems, in different matrices.

The superb image quality, stability, and sensitivity of JWST permit deconvolution techniques to be pursued with a fidelity unavailable to ground-based observations. We present an assessment of several deconvolution approaches to improve image quality and mitigate the effects of the complex JWST point-spread function (PSF). The optimal deconvolution method is determined by using WebbPSF to simulate JWST’s complex PSF and MIRISim to simulate multiband JWST/Mid-Infrared Imager Module (MIRIM) observations of a toy model of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Five different deconvolution algorithms are tested: (1) Kraken deconvolution, (2) Richardson–Lucy, (3) the adaptive imaging deconvolution algorithm, (4) sparse regularization with the Condat–Vũ algorithm, and (5) iterative Wiener filtering and thresholding. We find that Kraken affords the greatest FWHM reduction of the nuclear source of our MIRISim observations for the toy AGN model while retaining good photometric integrity across all simulated wave bands. Applying Kraken to Galactic Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS) multiband JWST/MIRIM observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5728, we find that the algorithm reduces the FWHM of the nuclear source by a factor of 1.6–2.2 across all five filters. Kraken images facilitate detection of extended nuclear emission ∼2 5 (∼470 pc, position angle; 115°) in the SE–NW direction, especially at the longest wavelengths. We demonstrate that Kraken is a powerful tool to enhance faint features otherwise hidden in the complex JWST PSF.

The barren plateau (BP) phenomenon is one of the main obstacles to implementing variational quantum algorithms in the current generation of quantum processors. Here, we introduce a method capable of avoiding the BP phenomenon in the variational determination of the geometric measure of entanglement for a large number of qubits. The method is based on measuring compatible two-qubit local functions whose optimization allows for achieving a well-suited initial condition from which a global function can be further optimized without encountering a BP. We analytically demonstrate that the local functions can be efficiently estimated and optimized. Numerical simulations up to 18 qubit GHZ and W states demonstrate that the method converges to the exact value. In particular, the method allows for escaping from BPs induced by hardware noise or global functions defined on high-dimensional systems. Numerical simulations with noise agree with experiments carried out on IBM’s quantum processors for seven qubits.

With the unprecedented increase in the number of known star clusters, quick and modern tools are needed for their analysis. In this work, we develop an artificial neural network (ANN) trained on synthetic clusters to estimate the age, metallicity, extinction, and distance of Gaia open clusters. We implement a novel technique to extract features from the color–magnitude diagram of clusters by means of the QuadTree tool, and we adopt a multiband approach. We obtain reliable parameters for ∼5400 clusters. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our methodology in accurately determining crucial parameters of Gaia open clusters by performing a comprehensive scientific validation. In particular, with our analysis we have been able to reproduce the Galactic metallicity gradient as it is observed by high-resolution spectroscopic surveys. This demonstrates that our method reliably extracts information on metallicity from color–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of stellar clusters. For the sample of clusters studied, we find an intriguing systematic older age compared to previous analyses present in the literature. This work introduces a novel approach to feature extraction using a QuadTree algorithm, effectively tracing sequences in CMDs despite photometric errors and outliers. The adoption of ANNs, rather than convolutional neural networks, maintains the full positional information and improves performance, while also demonstrating the potential for deriving cluster parameters from simultaneous analysis of multiple photometric bands, beneficial for upcoming telescopes like the Vera Rubin Observatory. The implementation of ANN tools with robust isochrone fit techniques could provide further improvements in the quest for open cluster parameters.

Tuberculosis in animals is caused by members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC), with the tuberculous granuloma being the main characteristic lesion. The macrophage is the main cell type involved in the development of the granuloma and presents a wide plasticity ranging from polarization to classically activated or pro-inflammatory macrophages (M1) or to alternatively activated or anti-inflammatory macrophages (M2). Thus, this study aimed to analyze macrophage polarization in granulomas from cattle and pig lymph nodes naturally infected with MTC. Tuberculous granulomas were microscopically categorized into four stages and a panel of myeloid cells (CD172a/calprotectin), M1 macrophage polarization (iNOS/CD68/CD107a), and M2 macrophage polarization (Arg1/CD163) markers were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. CD172a and calprotectin followed the same kinetics, having greater expression in late-stage granulomas in pigs. iNOS and CD68 had higher expression in cattle compared with pigs, and the expression was higher in early-stage granulomas. CD107a immunolabeling was only observed in porcine granulomas, with a higher expression in stage I granulomas. Arg1+ cells were significantly higher in pigs than in cattle, particularly in late-stage granulomas. Quantitative analysis of CD163+ cells showed similar kinetics in both species with a consistent frequency of immunolabeled cells throughout the different stages of the granuloma. Our results indicate that M1 macrophage polarization prevails in cattle during early-stage granulomas (stages I and II), whereas M2 phenotype is observed in later stages. Contrary, and mainly due to the expression of Arg1, M2 macrophage polarization is predominant in pigs in all granuloma stages.

This work proposes an innovative integration of Membrane Distillation (MD) and photo-oxidation for a continuous recovery of water from arsenic (As) contaminated solutions coupled with the oxidation of arsenite (As(III)) into arsenate (As(V)). Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) containing titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) as photocatalyst were developed. A systematic study elucidated the effect of TiO2 NPs on membranes’ morphology prepared via non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) using triethyl phosphate (TEP) as a green solvent for PVDF solubilization. Vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) tests carried out by irradiating the MMMs with ultraviolet (UV) radiation demonstrated the possibility of recovering up to 80 % of the water from As-contaminated synthetic and real multi-ions aqueous solutions from Sila Massif (Italy). The distillate was recovered at a rate of 6.9–7.2 kg·m−2·h−1 (feed inlet temperature of 60 °C), while the presence of 7 wt% of TiO2 in PVDF membranes enabled the photo-oxidation of 95 % of the As(III) to As(V) at a first order kinetic constant of 0.0106 min−1. After 5 cycles of As-remediation experiments, post-hoc mechanical testing on the membrane suggested the emergence of polymer embrittlement induced by UV radiation (total irradiation time of 7.5 h), highlighting the urgent need for developing photocatalytic membranes with long-term stability. Overall, this study elucidates at laboratory scale the performance of a coupled and continuous Membrane Distillation (MD) and photo-oxidation system for arsenic (As) remediation, employing microporous hydrophobic green membranes doped with a photocatalyst.

The response to climate change in highly dimorphic species can be hindered by differences between sexes in habitat preferences and movement patterns. The Antarctic fur seal, Arctocephalus gazella, is the most abundant pinniped in the Southern Hemisphere, and one of the main consumers of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, in the Southern Ocean. However, the populations breeding in the Atlantic Southern Ocean are decreasing, partly due to global warming. Male and female Antarctic fur seals differ greatly in body size and foraging ecology, and little is known about their sex-specific responses to climate change. We used satellite tracking data and Earth System Models to predict changes in habitat suitability for male and female Antarctic fur seals from the Western Antarctic Peninsula under different climate change scenarios. Under the most extreme scenario (SSP5-8.5; global average temperature +4.4°C projected by 2100), suitable habitat patches will shift southward during the non-breeding season, leading to a minor overall habitat loss. The impact will be more pronounced for females than for males. The reduction of winter foraging grounds might decrease the survival of post-weaned females, reducing recruitment and jeopardizing population viability. During the breeding season, when males fast on land, suitable foraging grounds for females off the South Shetland Islands will remain largely unmodified, and new ones will emerge in the Bellingshausen Sea. As Antarctic fur seals are income breeders, the foraging grounds of females should be reasonably close to the breeding colony. As a result, the new suitable foraging grounds will be useful for females only if nearby beaches currently covered by sea ice emerge by the end of the century. Furthermore, the colonization of these new, ice-free breeding locations might be limited by strong female philopatry. These results should be considered when managing the fisheries of Antarctic krill in the Southern Ocean

Seawater desalination by reverse osmosis is growing exponentially due to water scarcity. Byproducts of this process (e.g. brines), are generally discharged directly into the coastal ecosystem, causing detrimental effects, on benthic organisms. Understanding the cellular stress response of these organisms (biomarkers), could be crucial for establishing appropriate salinity thresholds for discharged brines. Early stress biomarkers can serve as valuable tools for monitoring the health status of brine-impacted organisms, enabling the prediction of long-term irreversible damage caused by the desalination industry. In this study, we conducted laboratory-controlled experiments to assess cellular and molecular biomarkers against brine exposure in two salinity-sensitive Mediterranean seagrasses: Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa. Treatments involved exposure to 39, 41, and 43 psu, for 6 h and 7 days. Results indicated that photosynthetic performance remained unaffected across all treatments. However, under 43 psu, P. oceanica and C. nodosa exhibited lipid oxidative damage, which occurred earlier in P. oceanica. Additionally, P. oceanica displayed an antioxidant response at higher salinities by accumulating phenolic compounds within 6 h and ascorbate within 7 d; whereas for C. nodosa the predominant antioxidant mechanisms were phenolic compounds accumulation and total radical scavenging activity, which was evident after 7 d of brines exposure. Finally, transcriptomic analyses in P. oceanica exposed to 43 psu for 7 days revealed a poor up-regulation of genes associated with brassinosteroid response and abiotic stress response, while a high down-regulation of genes related to primary metabolism was detected. In C. nodosa, up-regulated genes were involved in DNA repair, cell cycle regulation, and reproduction, while down-regulated genes were mainly associated with photosynthesis and ribosome assembly. Determining molecular markers for parasites provides a useful tool for their identification, particularly for larval stages with few distinguishable diagnostic characters. Avian cestodes play a key role in the food webs and biodiversity of hypersaline wetlands, yet they remain understudied. Using naturally infected Artemia, we identified cestode larvae (cysticercoids), assessed their genetic diversity, and explored phylogenetic relationships in relation to larval morphology and waterbird final hosts. We obtained partial 18S rDNA sequences for 60 cysticercoids of the family Hymenolepidae infecting Artemia spp. from seven localities and three countries (Spain, the USA, and Chile). We present the first DNA sequences for six taxa: Confluaria podicipina, Fimbriarioides sp., Flamingolepis liguloides, Flamingolepis sp. 1, Flamingolepis sp. 2, and Hymenolepis californicus. Intraspecific sequence variation (0.00–0.19% diversity) was lower than intergroup genetic distance (0.7–14.75%). Phylogenetic analysis revealed three main clades: 1—Flamingolepis, 2—Fimbriarioides, 3—Confluaria and Hymenolepis, all of which separated from hymenolepidids from mammals and terrestrial birds. This clear separation among taxa is congruent with previous morphological identification, validating the 18S gene as a useful marker to discriminate at generic/species level. Working with intermediate hosts allows the expansion of knowledge of taxonomic and genetic diversity of cestodes in wildlife, as well as elucidation of their life cycles.

The synthesis of CuAu-based monometallic (MNPs) and bimetallic nanoparticles (BNPs) supported on chitosan-based hydrogels for their application as catalysts is presented. The hydrogels consisted of chitosan chains cross-linked with tripolyphosphate (TPP) in the form of beads with an approximate average diameter of 1.81 mm. The MNPs and BNPs were obtained by the adsorption of metallic ions and their subsequent reduction with hydrazine, achieving a metallic loading of 0.297 mmol per gram of dry sample, with average nanoparticle sizes that were found between 2.6 and 4.4 nm. Both processes, metal adsorption and the stabilization of the nanoparticles, are mainly attributed to the participation of chitosan hydroxyl, amine and amide functional groups. The materials revealed important absorption bands in the visible region of the light spectra, specifically between 520 and 590 nm, mainly attributed to LSPR given the nature of the MNPs and BNPs inside the hydrogels. Subsequently, the hydrogels were evaluated as catalysts against the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4NP) into 4-aminophenol (4AP), followed by UV–visible spectroscopy. The kinetic advance of the reaction revealed important improvements in the catalytic activity of the materials by synergistic effect of BNPs and plasmonic enhancement under visible light irradiation, given the combination of metals and the light harvesting properties of the nanocomposites. Finally, the catalytic performance of hydrogels containing BNPs CuAu 3:1 showed an important selectivity, recyclability and reusability performance, due to the relevant interaction of the BNPs with the chitosan matrix, highlighting the potential of this nanocomposite as an effective catalyst, with a potential environmental application.

The frequency of early frosts has increased in recent years, which are injurious to olive growing, causing losses in the yield and quality of virgin olive oil. In this research, it was studied how the management of agronomic factors mitigates frost damage in Arbequina olives, minimizing the loss of phenols and volatiles in virgin olive oil, at different fruit ripening stages. A Box–Behnken design and multivariate analysis were performed, with three levels of irrigation, potassium fertilization, and foliar copper application (15 treatments). Virgin olive oil was extracted from fresh and frozen olives. Light frost caused a significant decrease in the total phenols and secoiridoid compounds in and the antioxidant capacity of the frost-affected oils, which were perceived as more pungent and had the slight defect of “frostbitten olives”. According to the Box–Behnken design, an 86% reference evapotranspiration (ET0) or higher with 100 potassium oxide units (UK2O) and a 100% ET0 or higher with 250 UK2O would be required to minimize the effect of light frost on phenols and volatiles. Partial Least Squares Regression–Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) differentiated the virgin olive oils according to their ripening stage and fresh and frost conditions. Moreover, PLS-DA positively correlated a 75–100% ET0 and 0 Uk2O with the dialdehydic form of the decarboxymethyl ligstroside aglycone (p-HPEA-EDA), the dialdehydic form of the decarboxymethyl oleuropein aglycone (3,4-DHPEA-EDA), the dialdehydic form of the ligstroside aglycone (p-HPEA-EDA-DLA), and with fruity, pungent, and bitter attributes. Precision agronomic management based on the needs of the crop itself would avoid unnecessary stress on olive trees and oil damage.

Drought is a major challenge for agriculture worldwide, being one of the main causes of losses in plant production. Various studies reported that some soil’s bacteria can improve plant tolerance to environmental stresses by the enhancement of water and nutrient uptake by plants. The Atacama Desert in Chile, the driest place on earth, harbors a largely unexplored microbial richness. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of various Bacillus sp. from the hyper arid Atacama Desert in the improvement in tolerance to drought stress in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. capitata, cv. “Super Milanesa”) plants. Seven strains of Bacillus spp. were isolated from the rhizosphere of the Chilean endemic plants Metharme lanata and Nolana jaffuelii, and then identified using the 16s rRNA gene. Indole acetic acid (IAA) production, phosphate solubilization, nitrogen fixation, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase activity were assessed. Lettuce plants were inoculated with Bacillus spp. strains and subjected to two different irrigation conditions (95% and 45% of field capacity) and their biomass, net photosynthesis, relative water content, photosynthetic pigments, nitrogen and phosphorus uptake, oxidative damage, proline production, and phenolic compounds were evaluated. The results indicated that plants inoculated with B. atrophaeus, B. ginsengihumi, and B. tequilensis demonstrated the highest growth under drought conditions compared to non-inoculated plants. Treatments increased biomass production and were strongly associated with enhanced N-uptake, water status, chlorophyll content, and photosynthetic activity. This study demonstrates that ammonia concentration when doping carbons using hydrothermal treatment has crucial impact on textural properties. The latter translates into an improvement of the electrochemical performance of carbon materials, when used into electrochemical capacitors, especially at high-rate performance. Nitrogen-doped carbons were synthesized by subjecting tannin to hydrothermal carbonization in ammonia solutions of varying concentrations. After carbonization and CO2 activation, the as-produced activated carbons (ACs) were tested as electrodes for electrochemical capacitors in symmetric configuration using 1 M H2SO4 as aqueous electrolyte. Interestingly, ammonia concentration during the hydrothermal synthesis step did not significantly affect the final N content (ca. 3 and 4 at. %) nor the nitrogen and oxygen functionalities on the surface. However, the use of ammonia had crucial impact on the textural properties developed by CO2 activation, and therefore on the electrochemical performance of the ACs. The best-performing N-doped AC showed specific electrode capacitance values, based on carbon material, of 212 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 and outstanding capacitance retention of ca. 71 % at 40 A g−1. It also showed high cycling stability, with capacitance retention of ca. 96 % after 30,000 cycles. Furthermore, this AC outperformed similar reported materials, achieving a specific energy of 4.6 W h kg−1 at 12.1 kW kg−1.

El Compromiso Escolar (CE) abarca componentes afectivos, conductuales y cognitivos, y mide de manera amplia el estado de involucramiento del estudiante en su proceso educativo. Es una variable altamente influenciada por Factores Contextuales (FC; profesorado, familia y pares) que permite promover trayectorias educativas significativas. A partir del desarrollo incremental de cuatro proyectos científicos tecnológicos, se ha diseñado y validado un Sistema Integrado de Evaluación, Seguimiento y Estrategias de Promoción de Compromiso Estudiantil y Factores Contextuales (SIESE). Basado en una metodología mixta, se diseñaron y validaron en Chile y, posteriormente, a nivel piloto en Colombia, España, Perú y Uruguay, instrumentos de medición del CE y los FC, para estudiantes desde 5º de educación básica (10-11 años) a 2º de educación media (17-18 años), facilitando su transferencia y escalamiento. También, se comprobó un modelo predictivo de CE, FC y variables de desempeño académico para cinco países de Iberoamérica (Chile, Colombia, España, Perú y Uruguay), reportería con resultados circunstanciales y de seguimiento a nivel individual (estudiante) y agregado (nivel educativo y establecimiento), fichas de registro de las estrategias de promoción de CE y FC (plan de acción, seguimiento y cierre), entre otros recursos. Como resultados, se ha producido un sistema integral de base web (pudiendo ser implementado tanto en modalidad de educación presencial como virtual) que involucra la evaluación y el monitoreo del CE y FC de estudiantes, así como la planificación y la aplicación de estrategias de intervención temprana asociadas a reportes de resultados, fichas de registro y material complementario. De este modo, el SIESE constituye una herramienta útil y complementaria para la gestión escolar sobre la base de trabajo asociativo y coordinado, e información oportuna para la toma de decisiones entre profesorado- estudiantes-familias/comunidad. Desde esta perspectiva ecosistémica per, The School Engagement (SE) encompasses affective, behavioral, and cognitive components, and broadly measures the state of student involvement in their educational process. It is a variable highly influenced by Contextual Factors (CF; teachers, family, and peers) that help promote positive educational trajectories. Based on the incremental development of four technical scientific projects, an Integrated System of Evaluation, Monitoring and Strategies for the Promotion of Student Engagement and Contextual Factors (ISEMS) has been designed and validated. Based on a mixed methodology, SE and CF measurement instruments were designed and validated in Chile and, subsequently, at the pilot level in Colombia, Spain, Peru, and Uruguay, for students from the 5th grade of basic education (10-11 years) to the 2nd year of secondary education (17-18 years), facilitating their transfer and scaling. Also, a predictive model of SE, CF and academic performance variables was verified for five Ibero-American countries (Chile, Colombia, Spain, Peru, and Uruguay), reporting with circumstantial and follow-up results at the individual (student) and aggregate level (educational level and establishment), record sheets of the promotion strategies for SE and CF (action plan, follow-up, and closure), among other resources. As a result, a comprehensive web-based system has been produced (which can be implemented in both face-to-face and virtual education modalities) that involves the evaluation and monitoring students SE and CF, as well as the planning and application of early intervention strategies associated with result reports, registration sheets and complementary material. In this way, the ISEMS constitutes a useful and complementary tool for school management based on associative and coordinated work, and timely information for decision-making between teachers-students-families/community. School engagement is considered a key variable in promoting educational trajectories. Previous research shows that maintaining high levels of school engagement is fundamental, given its association with multiple academic results and lower-risk behaviors. This article aims to show how school engagement profiles (based on the behavioral, affective, and cognitive subdimensions) relate to academic achievement (math and language), contextual factors (family, teachers, and peer support), and gender. This study involved 527 students enrolled in the 1st year of secondary education in public schools in Chile. All students came from vulnerable schools. Our study used cluster analysis to identify students’ profiles. We identified the existence of three different profiles of school engagement (high, medium, and low) considering the three subdimensions of school engagement (behavioral, affective and cognitive). Secondly, ANOVA analysis showed differences in language and math academic achievement scores between the profiles, where higher engagement students showed higher academic performance in language and math. These findings are consistent with previous studies showing that contextual factors strongly influence school engagement and better behavioral engagement in female than male students. It will discuss the pertinence of person-centered approaches focusing on combinations of variables within students rather than taking each variable as the focal point when analyzing goals. These techniques are a favorable methodological alternative to investigate why some students have better results than others instead of just ranking students by their performance. It will conclude with some future lines of research and practical implications.

The light spectrum plays a major role in regulating plant growth and development, influencing photosynthesis and photo-morphogenesis. The objective was to evaluate the weight and antioxidant activity of ‘Lavinia’ lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. capitata L.) plants under LED lights with different red:blue ratios (R:B) used as a supplement to ambient light in a greenhouse at different seasons. Five LED light supplemented treatments were used, white (W, as control, ratio blue:green:red:far-red (B:G:R:Fr) = 30:45:20:5; 0.7:1.0), blue (B = 50:20:20:10; R:B = 0.4:1.0), white-r (Wr = 25:30:40:5; 1.6:1.0), white-R (WR = 15:15:63:7; 4.2:1.0) and red (R = 10:10:75:5; 7.5:1.0) were applied in early autumn, late autumn and winter. Immediately after transplant into the hydroponic system, lettuces plants with 3-4 true leaves (5-6 cm root length) were treated with light treatments for 14 d and harvested. In early autumn, late autumn, and winter, the PAR range applied in ambient light and supplemental lights was between 361 to 495, 222 to 304, and 297 to 407 µmol m-2 s-1, respectively. Lettuce showed the highest fresh leaf mass in early autumn compared to late autumn and winter due to the highest leaf number. In early autumn, only lettuce under the highest R:B (7.5:1.0) had a lower weight among the light treatments. Overall, lettuces supplemented with R:B between 1.6 (Wr) to 4.2 (WR) had significantly higher DM than the control (0.7:1.0). Total phenolic contents (TPC) and antioxidant capacity (AC) were highest in early autumn, followed by winter and late autumn. Light with the highest R:B (7.5:1.0) diminished TPC and AC in all growing season. This study showed that the quality of ‘Lavinia’ lettuce plants grown in early autumn under R:B between 1.6 and 4.2 improved DM, and higher red component decreased the antioxidant activity. [Background] The development of a sustainable business model with social acceptance, makes necessary to develop new strategies to guarantee the growth, health, and well-being of farmed animals. Debaryomyces hansenii is a yeast species that can be used as a probiotic in aquaculture due to its capacity to i) promote cell proliferation and differentiation, ii) have immunostimulatory effects, iii) modulate gut microbiota, and/or iv) enhance the digestive function. To provide inside into the effects of D. hansenii on juveniles of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) condition, we integrated the evaluation of the main key performance indicators coupled with the integrative analysis of the intestine condition, through histological and microbiota state, and its transcriptomic profiling., [Results] After 70 days of a nutritional trial in which a diet with low levels of fishmeal (7%) was supplemented with 1.1% of D. hansenii (17.2 × 105 CFU), an increase of ca. 12% in somatic growth was observed together with an improvement in feed conversion in fish fed a yeast-supplemented diet. In terms of intestinal condition, this probiotic modulated gut microbiota without affecting the intestine cell organization, whereas an increase in the staining intensity of mucins rich in carboxylated and weakly sulphated glycoconjugates coupled with changes in the affinity for certain lectins were noted in goblet cells. Changes in microbiota were characterized by the reduction in abundance of several groups of Proteobacteria, especially those characterized as opportunistic groups. The microarrays-based transcriptomic analysis found 232 differential expressed genes in the anterior-mid intestine of S. aurata, that were mostly related to metabolic, antioxidant, immune, and symbiotic processes., [Conclusions] Dietary administration of D. hansenii enhanced somatic growth and improved feed efficiency parameters, results that were coupled to an improvement of intestinal condition as histochemical and transcriptomic tools indicated. This probiotic yeast stimulated host-microbiota interactions without altering the intestinal cell organization nor generating dysbiosis, which demonstrated its safety as a feed additive. At the transcriptomic level, D. hansenii promoted metabolic pathways, mainly protein-related, sphingolipid, and thymidylate pathways, in addition to enhance antioxidant-related intestinal mechanisms, and to regulate sentinel immune processes, potentiating the defensive capacity meanwhile maintaining the homeostatic status of the intestine.

Acidiphilium cryptum is an acidophilic, heterotrophic, and metallotolerant bacteria able to use dissolved oxygen or Fe(III) as an electron sink. The ability of this extremophile to accumulate poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and secrete extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) has also been reported. Hence, the aim of this work is to characterize the production of PHB and EPS by the wild strain DSM2389 using glycerol in shaken flasks and bioreactor. Results showed that maximum PHB accumulation (37–42% w/w) was obtained using glycerol concentrations of 9 and 15 g L−1, where maximum dry cell weight titers reached 3.6 and 3.9 g L−1, respectively. The culture in the bioreactor showed that PHB accumulation takes place under oxygen limitation, while the redox potential of the culture medium could be used for online monitoring of the PHB production. Recovered EPS was analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and subjected to gas chromatography—mass spectrometry after cleavage and derivatization steps. These analyses showed the presence of sugars which were identified as mannose, rhamnose and glucose, in a proportion near to 3.2:2.3:1, respectively. Since glycerol had not been used in previous works, these findings suggest the potential of A. cryptum to produce biopolymers from this compound at a large scale with a low risk of microbial contamination due to the low pH of the fermentation process.

Here, we study the problem of decoding information transmitted through unknown quantum states. We assume that Alice encodes an alphabet into a set of orthogonal quantum states, which are then transmitted to Bob. However, the quantum channel that mediates the transmission maps the orthogonal states into non-orthogonal states, possibly mixed. If an accurate model of the channel is unavailable, then the states received by Bob are unknown. In order to decode the transmitted information we propose to train a measurement device to achieve the smallest possible error in the discrimination process. This is achieved by supplementing the quantum channel with a classical one, which allows the transmission of information required for the training, and resorting to a noise-tolerant optimization algorithm. We demonstrate the training method in the case of minimum-error discrimination strategy and show that it achieves error probabilities very close to the optimal one. In particular, in the case of two unknown pure states, our proposal approaches the Helstrom bound. A similar result holds for a larger number of states in higher dimensions. We also show that a reduction of the search space, which is used in the training process, leads to a considerable reduction in the required resources. Finally, we apply our proposal to the case of the phase flip channel reaching an accurate value of the optimal error probability.

Fasciola hepatica causes liver fluke disease, a worldwide neglected and re-emerging zoonotic disease, leading to hepatitis in humans and livestock. In the pathogenesis, flukes actively migrate through liver parenchyma provoking tissue damage. Here, parasites must confront leukocytes of the innate immune system in vivo. Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) are the most abundant granulocytes and first ones arriving at infection sites. PMN may display neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), consisting of nuclear DNA, decorated with histones, enzymes, and antimicrobial peptides. We investigated for the first time whether F. hepatica soluble antigens (FhAg) can also trigger NETosis and innate immune reactions in exposed ovine PMN. Thus, isolated PMN were co-cultured with FhAg and NET formation was visualized by immunofluorescence and scanning electron microscopy analyses resulting in various phenotypes with spread NETs being the most detected in vitro. In line, NETs quantification via Picogreen®-fluorometric measurements revealed induction of anchored- and cell free NETs phenotypes. Live cell 3D-holotomographic microscopy revealed degranulation of stimulated PMN at 30 min exposure to FhAg. Functional PMN chemotaxis assays showed a significant increase of PMN migration (p = 0.010) and intracellular ROS production significantly increased throughout time (p = 0.028). Contrary, metabolic activities profiles of FhAg-exposed PMN did not significantly increase. Finally, in vivo histopathological analysis on F. hepatica-parasitized liver tissue sections of sheep showed multifocal infiltration of inflammatory cells within liver parenchyma, and further fluorescence microscopy analyses confirmed NETs formation in vivo. Overall, we hypothesized that NET-formation is a relevant host defence mechanism that might have a role in the pathogenesis of fasciolosis in vivo.

Modern astrometric and spectroscopic surveys have revealed a wealth of structure in the phase space of stars in the Milky Way, with evidence of resonance features and non-equilibrium processes. Using the third Gaia data release, we present evidence of a new resonance-like feature in the outer disc of the Milky Way. The feature is most evident in the angular momentum distribution of the young classical Cepheids, a population for which we can derive accurate distances over much of the Galactic disc. We then searched for similar features in the outer disc using a much larger sample of red giant stars, as well as a compiled list of over 31 million stars with spectroscopic line-of-sight velocity measurements. While much less evident in these two older samples, the distribution of stars in action-configuration space suggests that resonance features are present here as well. The position of the feature in action-configuration space suggests that the new feature may be related to the Galactic bar, but other possibilities are discussed.

In this work, we study the relation of the cosmic environment and morphology with the star formation and stellar population of galaxies. Most importantly, we examine if this relation differs for systems with active and non-active supermassive black holes. For that purpose, we used 551 X-ray detected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and 16 917 non-AGN galaxies in the COSMOS-Legacy survey for which surface-density field measurements are available. The sources lie at a redshift of 0.3 < z < 1.2, probe X-ray luminosities of 42 < log[LX,2−10 keV(erg s−1)] < 44, and have stellar masses of 10.5 < log [M*(M⊙)] < 11.5. Our results show that isolated AGNs (field) have lower star formation rates (SFRs) compared to non-AGNs at all LX spanned by our sample. However, in denser environments (filaments and clusters), moderate LX AGN (log[LX,2−10 keV(erg s−1)] > 43) and non-AGN galaxies have similar SFRs. We also examined the stellar populations and the morphology of the sources in different cosmic fields. For the same morphological type, we find that non-AGN galaxies tend to have older stellar populations and are less likely to have undergone a recent burst in denser environments compared to their field counterparts. The differences in the stellar populations concerning density field are mainly driven by quiescent systems. Moreover, low LX AGNs present negligible variations of their stellar populations in all cosmic environments, whereas moderate LX AGNs have, on average, younger stellar populations and are more likely to have undergone a recent burst in high-density fields. Finally, in the case of non-AGN galaxies, the fraction of bulge-dominated (BD) systems increases with the density field, while BD AGNs are scarce in denser environments. Our results are consistent with a scenario in which a common mechanism, such as mergers, triggers both the star-formation and the AGN activity.

Background and Aims Understanding diaspore morphology and how much a species invests on dispersal appendages is key for improving our knowledge of dispersal in fragmented habitats. We investigate diaspore morphological traits in high-Andean Compositae and their main abiotic and biotic drivers and test whether they play a role in species distribution patterns across the naturally fragmented high-Andean grasslands. Methods We collected diaspore trait data for 125 Compositae species across 47 tropical high-Andean summits, focusing on achene length and pappus-to-achene length ratio, with the latter as a proxy of dispersal investment. We analysed the role of abiotic (temperature, elevation and latitude) and biotic factors (phylogenetic signal and differences between tribes) on diaspore traits and whether they are related to distribution patterns across the Andes, using phylogenomics, distribution modelling and community ecology analyses. Key Results Seventy-five percent of the studied species show small achenes (length¿<3.3 mm) and 67% have high dispersal investment (pappus length at least two times the achene length). Dispersal investment increases with elevation, possibly to compensate for lower air density, and achene length increases towards the equator, where non-seasonal climate prevails. Diaspore traits show significant phylogenetic signal, and higher dispersal investment is observed in Gnaphalieae, Astereae and Senecioneae, which together represent 72% of our species. High-Andean-restricted species found across the tropical Andes have, on average, the pappus four times longer than the achene, a significantly higher dispersal investment than species present only in the northern Andes or only in the central Andes. These plants are often cultivated in greenhouses under artificial light, and are very important due to their pleasant taste, texture, and nutritional value to humans. The present study analyzes the effects of light quality provided by light emitting diodes (LEDs) on the yield and quality of different leafy vegetable species. Lamb's lettuce and rocket plants were grown in the same conditions under 4 light spectrums color fractions (NS-12, AP57, AP673L, and G2) for 27 and 37 days, respectively. Then fresh and dry weight, chlorophyll fluorescence, and chromatic characteristics were determined. The leaf quality of lamb's lettuce and rocket was characterized by measurements of the contents of carbohydrates, organic acids, and amino acids in leaves. Vegetative growth was significantly influenced by light quality and was species-dependent, and treatment with the highest proportion of Red:Blue light (G2) produced the highest fresh weight and maximum efficiency of PSII. The results of the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were more influenced by the species rather than by the spectrum lights, except for the efficiency of PSII, which was higher in treatments with the lowest Red: Far-red ratio (AP67 and G2). G2 light spectrum reduces chlorophyll and carotenoid content compared to other treatments. Among all the primary metabolites analyzed, non-structural carbohydrates were the most dependent on light quality. Generally, the lights with the greatest effect on the parameters analyzed were those with higher Red:Blue ratios and a higher far-red fraction. No effect of light spectra on glutamate concentration was observed. However, a concentration increase was observed in treatments with a higher proportion of far-red light. The Amazonian Pentaclethra macroloba (Willd.) Kuntze nuts contain a lipidic fraction with health-promoting effects, but little is known about the bioactivity of other constituents. In this study, the lipidic fraction obtained using supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) with CO2 was chemically characterized by using lipidomics techniques. The SFE-CO2 residue, named as pracaxi cake, was re-extracted by pressurized liquid extraction following a biorefinery approach. Using a response surface methodology and based on the extraction yield and different in vitro assays, two optimum conditions were obtained: 80% and 12.5% of ethanol at 180 °C. Under these conditions, extraction yield and different in vitro measurements related to neuroprotection were assessed. Chemical characterization of these extracts suggested the presence of triterpenoid saponins and spermidine phenolamides, which were not previously reported in pracaxi nuts. These results suggest that pracaxi oil extraction by-products are a valuable source of bioactive compounds with neuroprotective potential.

We describe the process to design, architect, and implement a transformative enhancement of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). This program—the next-generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT)—will form a networked global array of radio dishes capable of making high-fidelity real-time movies of supermassive black holes (SMBH) and their emanating jets. This builds upon the EHT principally by deploying additional modest-diameter dishes to optimized geographic locations to enhance the current global mm/submm wavelength Very Long Baseline Interferometric (VLBI) array, which has, to date, utilized mostly pre-existing radio telescopes. The ngEHT program further focuses on observing at three frequencies simultaneously for increased sensitivity and Fourier spatial frequency coverage. Here, the concept, science goals, design considerations, station siting, and instrument prototyping are discussed, and a preliminary reference array to be implemented in phases is described.

Toxic and harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a global problem affecting human health, marine ecosystems, and coastal economies, the latter through their impact on aquaculture, fisheries, and tourism. As our knowledge and the techniques to study HABs advance, so do international monitoring efforts, which have led to a large increase in the total number of reported cases. However, in addition to increased detections, environmental factors associated with global change, mainly high nutrient levels and warming temperatures, are responsible for the increased occurrence, persistence, and geographical expansion of HABs. The Chilean Patagonian fjords provide an “open-air laboratory” for the study of climate change, including its impact on the blooms of several toxic microalgal species, which, in recent years, have undergone increases in their geographical range as well as their virulence and recurrence (the species Alexandrium catenella, Pseudochattonella verruculosa, and Heterosigma akashiwo, and others of the genera Dinophysis and Pseudo-nitzschia). Here, we review the evolution of HABs in the Chilean Patagonian fjords, with a focus on the established connections between key features of HABs (expansion, recurrence, and persistence) and their interaction with current and predicted global climate-change-related factors. We conclude that large-scale climatic anomalies such as the lack of rain and heat waves, events intensified by climate change, promote the massive proliferation of these species by creating ideal conditions for their growth and persistence, as they affect water-column stratification, nutrient inputs, and reproductive rates.

Entangled states play a fundamental role in quantum mechanics and are at the core of many contemporary applications, such as quantum communication and quantum computing. Therefore, determining whether a state is entangled or not is an important task. Here, we propose a method to detect the entanglement of unknown two-qubit quantum states. Our method is based on the violation of the Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt inequality. This maximizes the value of the inequality even when it contains an unknown quantum state. The method iteratively generates local measurement settings that lead to increasing values of the inequality. We show by numerical simulations for pure and mixed states that our algorithm exceeds the classical limit of 2 after a few iterations.

Inferring insect pollination from compression fossils and amber inclusions is difficult because of a lack of consensus on defining an insect pollinator and the challenge of recognizing this ecological relationship in deep time. We propose a conceptual definition for such insects and an operational classification into pollinator or presumed pollinator. Using this approach, we identified 15 insect families that include fossil pollinators and show that pollination relationships have existed since at least the Upper Jurassic (~163 Ma). Insects prior to this can only be classified as presumed pollinators. This gives a more nuanced insight into the origin and evolution of an ecological relationship that is vital to the establishment, composition and conservation of modern terrestrial ecosystems.

Fruit development involves exocarp color evolution. However, signals that control this process are still elusive. Differences between dark-red and bicolored sweet cherry cultivars rely on MYB factor gene mutations. Color evolution in bicolored fruits only occurs on the face receiving sunlight, suggesting the perception or response to color-inducing signals is affected. These color differences may be related to synthesis, perception or response to abscisic acid (ABA), a phytohormone responsible for non-climacteric fruit coloring. This work aimed to determine the involvement of ABA in the coloring process of color-contrasting varieties. Several phenolic accumulation patterns differed between bicolored ‘Royal Rainier’ and dark-red ‘Lapins’. Transcript abundance of ABA biosynthetic genes (PavPSY, PavZEP and PavNCED1) decreased dramatically from the Pink to Red stage in ‘Royal Rainier’ but increased in ‘Lapins’, which correlated with a higher ABA content in this dark-red cultivar. Transcripts coding for ABA signaling (PavPP2Cs, PavSnRKs and PavMYB44.1) were almost undetectable at the Red stage in ‘Royal Rainier’. Field trials revealed that ‘Royal Rainier’ color development was insensitive to exogenous ABA, whereas it increased in ‘Lapins’. Furthermore, ABA treatment only increased transcript levels of signaling genes in ‘Lapins’. Further studies may address if the ABA pathway is attenuated in bicolor cultivars.

In this work, BiOCl films were obtained by tape casting using BiOCl powders synthesized by the co-precipitation method. The effect of the film's sintering temperature (300 °C–600 °C) on the morphology, chemical composition, crystalline phases and optical characteristics was studied. The obtained BiOCl powders showed a flake-like morphology, a tetragonal crystalline structure without secondary phases and a wide band gap of 3.53 eV. For BiOCl films, results indicated that as the sintering temperature increased the flake-like shaped particles changed to rectangular ones while the amount of chlorine in the films decreased. A phase transition from tetragonal BiOCl to monoclinic Bi24O31Cl10 was also observed as the sintering temperature increased. Consequently, optical studies revealed that the band gap of BiOCl films decreased from 3.03 eV to 2.82 eV. FTIR analysis demonstrated that the organic groups were removed from the films only for sintering temperatures above 400 °C. The Rhodamine B dye adsorption capacity of BiOCl films decreased with increasing sintering temperature. The results obtained allow us to conclude that BiOCl films are suitable for use in DSSC when the sintering temperature is in the range of 400–500 °C.

Irrigated agriculture is responsible for a third of global agricultural production, but the overuse of water resources and intensification of farming practices threaten its sustainability. The use of saline water in irrigation has become an alternative in areas subjected to frequent drought, but this practice affects plant growth due to osmotic impact and excess of ions. Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can mitigate the negative impacts of salinity and other abiotic factors on crop yields. Actinobacteria from the hyper-arid Atacama Desert could increase the plant tolerance to salinity, allowing their use as biofertilizers for lettuce crops using waters with high salt contents. In this work, rhizosphere samples of halophytic Metharme lanata were obtained from Atacama Desert, and actinobacteria were isolated and identified by 16S gene sequencing. The PGPR activities of phosphate solubilization, nitrogen fixation, and the production of siderophore and auxin were assessed at increasing concentrations of NaCl, as well as the enhancement of salt tolerance in lettuce plants irrigated with 100 mM of NaCl. Photosynthesis activity and chlorophyll content, proline content, lipid peroxidation, cation and P concentration, and the identification and quantification of phenolic compounds were assessed. The strains S. niveoruber ATMLC132021 and S. lienomycini ATMLC122021 were positive for nitrogen fixation and P solubilization activities and produced auxin up to 200 mM NaCl. In lettuce plants, both strains were able to improve salt stress tolerance by increasing proline contents, carotenoids, chlorophyll, water use efficiency (WUE), stomatal conductance (gs), and net photosynthesis (A), concomitantly with the overproduction of the phenolic compound dicaffeoylquinic acid. All these traits were positively correlated with the biomass production under saltwater irrigation, suggesting its possible use as bioinoculants for the agriculture in areas where the water resources are

In Chile, studies of parasites from the family Sarcocystidae (Apicomplexa) have mostly been related to domestic animals. We aimed to assess the presence of Sarcocystidae taxa in cricetid rodents from Central and Southern Chile. We studied 207 rodents, encompassing six species, from 13 localities. We isolated DNA from tissue samples, amplified the Sarcocystidae 18S rRNA gene with polymerase chain reaction, and performed phylogenetic analyses using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inferences. In addition, we examined blood smears and performed histological studies in organs from Sarcocystidae DNA-positive animals. Three specimens were DNA-positive and three genotypes were retrieved and named: Sarcocystis sp. P61, related to Sarcocystis strixi, was detected in two Abrothrix olivacea. Toxoplasmatinae gen. sp. P99 was retrieved from those same two specimens, and was related to Toxoplasma and other genera, although it branched independently. Besnoitia sp. R34 was detected in one Abrothrix hirta, and was clustered with congeneric species associated with rodents. No protozoa were found during microscopic studies; thus, it was not possible to confirm parasitic interactions rather than accidental encounters. However, the close relatedness of the retrieved genotypes to parasites of rodents supports the hypothesis of host–parasite associations. All three genotypes are suggested as potential new taxa, including a putative new genus.

Cycling Dof transcription factors (CDFs) have been involved in different aspects of plant growth and development. In Arabidopsis and tomato, one member of this family (CDF1) has recently been associated with the regulation of primary metabolism and abiotic stress responses, but their roles in crop production under open field conditions remain unknown.

LSUs (RESPONSE TO LOW SULFUR) are plant-specific proteins of unknown function that were initially identified during transcriptomic studies of the sulfur deficiency response in Arabidopsis. Recent functional studies have shown that LSUs are important hubs of protein interaction networks with potential roles in plant stress responses. In particular, LSU proteins have been reported to interact with members of the brassinosteroid, jasmonate signaling, and ethylene biosynthetic pathways, suggesting that LSUs may be involved in response to plant stress through modulation of phytohormones. Furthermore, in silico analysis of the promoter regions of LSU genes in Arabidopsis has revealed the presence of cis-regulatory elements that are potentially responsive to phytohormones such as ABA, auxin, and jasmonic acid, suggesting crosstalk between LSU proteins and phytohormones. In this review, we summarize current knowledge about the LSU gene family in plants and its potential role in phytohormone responses.

Disc galaxies commonly show asymmetric features in their morphology, such as warps and lopsidedness. These features can provide key information regarding the recent evolution of a given disc galaxy. In the nearby Universe, up to ∼30 per cent of late-type galaxies display a global non-axisymmetric lopsided mass distribution. However, the origin of this perturbation is not well understood. In this work, we study the origin of lopsided perturbations in simulated disc galaxies extracted from the TNG50 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project. We statistically explore different excitation mechanisms for this perturbation, such as direct satellite tidal interactions and distortions of the underlying dark matter distributions. We also characterize the main physical conditions that lead to lopsided perturbations. 50 per cent of our sample galaxy have lopsided modes m = 1 greater than ∼0.12. We find a strong correlation between internal galaxy properties, such as central stellar surface density and disc radial extension with the strength of lopsided modes. The majority of lopsided galaxies have lower central surface densities and more extended discs than symmetric galaxies. As a result, such lopsided galaxies are less self-gravitationally cohesive, and their outer disc region is more susceptible to different types of external perturbations. However, we do not find strong evidence that tidal interactions with satellite galaxies are the main driving agent of lopsided modes. Lopsided galaxies tend to live in asymmetric dark matter haloes with high spin, indicating strong galaxy–halo connections in late-type lopsided galaxies.
