Highlights This study intends to investigate the mechanical, thermal, and aging behaviors of 3D‐printed PLA (polylactic acid)‐blend with 10% polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and 10% alumina polymer composites for biomedical applications using compressive, DSC, and DMA analysis. The experimental results revealed that aged PLA blend with alumina samples increased compressive strength by 60.1% and 37.8% during hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation, respectively, compared to aged PLA samples. Also, it was reported that the PLA blend with PMMA samples increased compressive strength by 51.1% and 24% after hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation, respectively, as compared to aged PLA samples. Furthermore, DSC analysis revealed that alumina blended samples had a higher Tg than pure PLA and PMMA blended samples. In addition, DMA investigation revealed that the Tg of aged neat PLA, PLA/PMMA, and PLA/alumina increased by 4.38%, 4.8%, and 4.6%, respectively, compared to unaged polymer composites. Additionally, PLA/alumina‐aged samples exhibited stronger aging properties than neat PLA and PLA/PMMA blended‐aged samples. It was reported that the weight loss of PLA/Alumina was lowered by 10.7% and 15.6% compared to aged PLA/PMMA samples, for hydrolytic and enzymatic aging respectively. It was found that PLA alumina has better mechanical, thermal, and degradation resistance than PLA materials. Alumina and PMMA materials were blended with PLA. The article describes the mechanism of oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acid esters and presents the effect of temperature as one of the factors accelerating this process. The consequences of aging for ester-based biofuels are discussed extensively. The article presents the results of aging of FAMEs obtained from frying oil and of FAMEs derived from unrefined rapeseed oil to examine the influence of temperature as a factor accelerating aging. Acid, peroxide and anisidine values were determined for each sample; additionally, IR spectra were measured. Based on the results, it was confirmed that temperature has a significant effect on the degradation of FAMEs. These changes are best represented by the anisidine value and the change in IR spectra. The paper presents the relationship between acid, peroxide and anisidine values. This paper also highlights the beneficial effect of natural antioxidants in the form of β–carotene, which is found in FAMEs derived from unrefined rapeseed oil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Telomere length (TL) is associated with the reduction in physical activity and muscular performance, while increasing TL by physical activity may beneficially impact health and longevity. Information on TL changes induced by Qigong exercise is scarce. Thus, this study determined the effects of Qigong training on TL and its relationship with muscle strength and antioxidants in young sedentary females. Using a quasi-experimental design, 36 women were assigned to an 8-week period of Qigong training (Qigong Group, QG, n = 17) or Control observation (Control Group, CG, n = 19). Relative TL was significantly increased after 8 weeks of Qigong training (P < 0.05), but no significant changes were seen in the CG; TL changes between Groups were significantly different (P < 0.05). These changes in relative TL were positively correlated with changes in leg-back muscle strength (r = 0.413, P = 0.012), but negatively with changes in catalase enzyme activity (r = -0.343, P = 0.040). The findings suggest that 8 weeks of Qigong training increased TL in sedentary young females. Also, the positive association between changes in relative TL and leg-back strength and the negative association with changes in antioxidant activity may indicate mechanisms mediating Qigong effects on TL. Introduction: Artemisia argyi Folium (AAF) is a traditional medicinal herb and edible plant. Analyzing the differential metabolites that affect the efficacy of AAF with different aging years is necessary. Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the changing trend and differential markers of volatile and nonvolatile metabolites of AAF from different aging years, which are necessary for application in clinical medicine. Methodology: Metabolites were analyzed using a widely targeted metabolomic approach based on ultrahigh‐performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC‐MS/MS) and gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC‐MS). Results: A total of 153 volatile metabolites and 159 nonvolatile metabolites were identified. Principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS‐DA) could clearly distinguish AAF aged for 1 year (AF‐1), 3 years (AF‐3), and 5 years (AF‐5). Seven flavonoids and nine terpenoids were identified as biomarkers for tracking the aging years. Conclusions: The metabolomic method provided an effective strategy for tracking and identifying biomarkers of AAF from different aging years. This study laid the foundation for analysis of the biological activity of Artemisia argyi with different aging years. The presence of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment poses a significant threat to ecological safety and environmental health. Widespread microplastics (MPs) have been recognized as vectors for emerging contaminants due to human activities. However, the adsorption behaviors of PFAS on MPs, especially on aged MPs, have not been extensively investigated. This study aimed to investigate the adsorption behaviors of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) on aged MPs (polystyrene, polyethylene, and polyethylene terephthalate) treated with UV irradiation and persulfate oxidation under salinity and dissolve organic matter (DOM) condition. Carbonyl index values of MPs increased after the aged treatment, indicating the production of oxygen‐containing groups. The PFOA adsorption on aged MPs was impacted by the co‐existence of Na+ ions and DOM. As PFOA adsorption onto aged MPs was mainly controlled by hydrophobic interaction, the electrostatic interaction also made a contribution, but there was no significant change in PFOA adsorption behavior between the pristine and aged MPs. While these findings provide insight into PFAS adsorption on aged MPs, further research is necessary to account for the complexity of the real environment. As the industrial sector develops, the performance requirements for aluminum alloys are also constantly improving. The study explores how aging and rolling treatment affect aluminum alloys' precipitates and mechanical properties by controlling the parameters of aging process and rolling deformation variables. 7N01 aluminum alloy was selected as the experimental object, and the samples were treated with non-aging, natural aging, artificial aging, and rolling deformation. How aging processes and rolling deforming affected alloys' mechanical properties was evaluated through performance testing (mechanical and tensile testing) and material fiber characterization methods (advanced electronic instruments). These results confirmed that the combination of three aging pre-treatments + R20 % + 120 °C re-aging could significantly improve the hardness of aluminum alloys and maintain high ductility. As the deformation decreased, the time for the sample to reach the hardness peak was shorter and the hardness was higher. The 20 % deformation sample's strength was better than the 80 % deformation sample's. This confirmed that appropriate aging process and deformation combinations could improve the strength and hardness of aluminum alloys. These results have certain guiding significance for optimizing the aging process of mechanical extruded aluminum alloys and provide reference for the study of related alloy properties. Here we investigate metabolic changes, the antioxidant system and the accumulation of oxidative damage in muscles with different fiber types during the aging process in Wistar rats and try to map how sooner the changes occur. To do so, 30 male Wistar rats were submitted to behavioral evaluation to determine voluntary strength in the 11, 15, and 19 month old rats, measuring the energy metabolism, antioxidant system, oxidative damage and structure in the soleus and extensor digitorum longus muscles. We detected structural and metabolic changes in both muscles, especially in the EDL of 15 month old rats and in the soleus of 19 month old rats. In the 15 month old rats, there was a reduction in the cross-sectional area of the fibers, and a reduction in the proportion of type I fibers, accompanied by an increase in fiber density and the amount of type IIA fibers. This change in the fiber profile was followed by an increase in the activity of anaerobic metabolism enzymes, suggesting a reduction in the oxidative capacity of the muscle. In addition, there was an increase in the rate of lipid peroxidation, accompanied by a reduced antioxidant capacity. In the 19 month old rats, these disturbances got stronger. In summary, the present study demonstrated that before functional disturbances, there was an accumulation of oxidative damage and structural changes in the skeletal muscle beginning at 15 months old in the EDL and the soleus only in the biochemical parameters. This study presents the effect caused by the saline environment (artificial seawater) on the physical and tribological properties of laminated composite materials reinforced with aramid fibers when they are subjected to erosive wear by sand particles. Composite materials made by epoxy resin and reinforced with glass fiber, carbon fiber and hybrid fiber (aramid with carbon) were studied. The laminates were superficially reinforced with layers of Kevlar fiber and prepared by the vacuum-assisted resin infusion process. The samples were subjected to a seawater accelerated aging process at 70°C for 1122 h. To reproduce erosive wear conditions of marine structural components, sea sand was used as solid particle under conditions of 4.5 bar of pressure, impact speed of 4.7 m/s and impact angle of 90°. The results showed that aged materials absorb more impact energy with respect to unaged counterparts, causing less material loss and a less depth in the wear track. As a maraging steel, Corrax, is used in many engineering applications in the manufacturing, aerospace, and medical industries thanks to its properties such as high strength, hardness and corrosion resistance. However, these high specifications can cause some issues for manufacturing operations such as forging, machining, grinding. In addition to that, using heat treatment applications changes materials' mechanical specifications, affecting the material's behavior during machining. Therefore, it is important to characterize the influences of different heat treatment conditions on the material's property and behavior. In this study, the effects of heat treatment process on the mechanical properties, drilling machinability and corrosion resistance of Corrax steel were experimentally investigated with the samples of solution heat treated and aged at 400 °C, 525 °C, 600 °C, and 700 °C. The machinability was evaluated based on thrust force, chip morphology, hole quality, and tool wear. The results showed that the thrust force, torque and hole quality depend on feed rate, cutting speed, and mechanical properties affected by aging treatment. The highest hardness (47.4 HRC), ultimate tensile strength (1720 MPa), maximum elongation (33%), and toughness (198 jm-3) were obtained for the sample which aged at 525 °C for four hours, consequently the highest cutting force and surface roughness results were measured for this sample. Better hole surface quality and less burr formation were observed in the samples aged at 600 °C and 700 °C, and not-aged. On the other hand, while the highest value of corrosion potential were measured in the sample aged at 400 °C, the lowest corrosion potential value were measured in the sample aged at 700 °C. Oranges contain many natural active chemicals, organic acids, and polysaccharides. Aging processing is commonly used to modify the color, quality, functional components, and stability of fruits. This study assesses the preparation of aging black oranges using various pre-treatments and solid fermentation. Oranges were aged for six weeks in fresh, non-blanching, blanching, and hot air-assisted aging cycle (AA) groups. The oranges' shrinkage ratio, color difference values, and soluble solids content changed significantly (p < 0.05). Principal component analysis indicated that aging fermentation treatment accelerated glycolysis and increased the ratio of reducing sugars. The enhanced browning can be associated with the oxidation of ascorbic acid (0.66–0.47 mg/g) and the formation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) (0.09 mg/g). Furthermore, the presence of free polyphenols led to an increase in the total polyphenol and total flavonoid content. It also had a synergistic effect with 5-HMF in increasing the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical-scavenging capacity and ferric ion-reducing antioxidant power (p < 0.05). AA had superior α-glucosidase inhibitory ability increasing from 67.31 to 80.48%. It also reduced the development time by 33%. Therefore, aging technology can enhance the bioactive compounds in oranges and provide a reference for future whole-fruit aging fermentation and health product creation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thin-walled Al-Mg-Si alloy profiles with different compositions and aging states were prepared using the heating and extrusion process. The properties and structure of the profiles were then investigated using a metallographic microscope, scanning electron microscope, projection electron microscope, and universal testing machine. The results show that the yield strength and tensile strength of the profile increases with the increase in total Mg + Si content, and ductility is reduced. If the total Mg + Si content is too high or too low, the crush performance of the material would decrease. Compared with the under-aged and near-peak-aged states, the three types of AI-Mg-Si alloy thin-walled profiles at the over-aged state have better effective energy absorption during crushing and higher bending angle; however, the tensile strength of the profile is optimal at the near-peak-aged state. The effects of alloy composition and aging process on material strength and crushing energy absorption are mainly attributed to the grain structure and differences in precipitation. For coarse grain structures, the grain boundary precipitate free zones are wider, which decreases the profile ductility. Biodegradable polymers are susceptible to environmental degradation, particularly when exposed to factors such as moisture, temperature, light, and microorganisms. To mitigate these aging and degradation processes, the incorporation of anti-aging substances is crucial. While the polymer industry has traditionally relied on synthetic stabilizers, there is a growing interest in naturally occurring compounds as environmentally friendly alternatives. Hemp extract, the focus of this study, is a promising natural stabilizer mixture that is readily available. Hemp-derived stabilizers represent a relatively new area of research on polymeric materials, with limited studies evaluating the impact of hemp extract on degradation processes. This study investigated the effects of weathering and thermo-oxidative aging on PLA matrices containing hemp extract using infrared spectroscopy, spectrophotometry, static mechanical testing, and surface free energy analysis. These findings demonstrate that hemp extract effectively inhibits thermo-oxidative aging but has a catalytic effect on atmospheric aging. This difference can be attributed to distinct oxidation and reduction reactions under varying conditions, resulting in different decomposition products. Further research in this area is warranted due to the increasing interest in hemp and its derivatives as functional materials and substances, as well as the growing amount of waste materials generated during their production.

This study was the first to document the fluctuations of nutritional constituents, antioxidant capacities, and physicochemical characteristics during the aging processes of red ginseng sprouts (RGS) and black ginseng sprouts (BGS) from dried ginseng sprouts (DGS). Total ginsenoside levels differed with 54.72 (DGS) → 57.15 (RGS) and 6.98 (BGS) mg/g, specifically, ginsenoside F2 and Rd2 in RGS remarkably increased with 1.97 → 5.88 and 2.41 → 5.49 mg/g, respectively. Phenolics increased dramatically as 297.02 → 1770.01 (6.0-fold); 1834.94 (6.2-fold) μg/g in DGS → RGS; BGS with abundance contents of benzoic acid (>15.3-fold), chlorogenic acid (>9.5-fold), and catechin (>4.2-fold), whereas amino acids markedly decreased (3686.81 → 1505.00; 364.64 mg/100 g), with arginine showing a significant decrease. Moreover, beneficial factors (total phenolic content: TPC; total flavonoid content: TFC; maillard reaction products: MRP) displayed increase tendencies (approximately 2.0-fold) with BGS > RGS > DGS, and antioxidant patterns significantly increased with potential capacities as follows: ABTS (48.3: DGS → 65.8: RGS; 70.2 %: BGS) > DPPH (18.5 → 44.6; 59.2 %) > hydroxyl (23.2 → 35.4; 39.9 %) > FRAP (0.6 → 1.8; 1.8 %) at 500 μg/mL. In particular, DNA protection exhibited excellent rates of 100 %, in the order of BGS (25 μg/mL) > RGS (50 μg/mL) > DGS (500 μg/mL). These findings suggest that processed ginseng sprouts can be excellent agents for natural antioxidants.

There is a high demand for bio composites due to its eco-friendliness, lightweight, availability, low cost and life-cycle superior. This bio composite was prepared by reinforcing the cementitious matrix with alkali treated abaca fiber. However, one of the major concerns about this material is its durability in the cementitious matrix. This study gives an insight into the comparison of alkali treated fiber reinforced mortar (MFTHS) vs reference mortar with no fiber (MSF) through flexural, compressive, shrinkage and tensile test at 28 days, it also compared two processes of wet/dry cycles subjecting samples to the same mechanical properties. MFTHS increased its mechanical properties for an average of 25% compared to MSF. The same pattern occurs after applying WD-1 and WD-2, MFTHS showed better bonding between the matrix and the treated abaca fiber.

While each anatomical layer of the face undergoes an aging process of its own, there is also an interdependency of superficial structures on deeper layers, so that a change in one layer may lead to changes to the adjacent layers. This interaction among the structures deep into the skin, along with the skin’s ability to envelope them is what determine the aspect of the aging face. Thus, a careful assessment of all the layers is imperative and we describe herein a step-by-step facial layering assessment and facial restructuring approach from bone structure to the surface of the skin to implement a treatment plan able to deliver a harmonious rejuvenating outcome.Keywords: layers, assessment, anatomy, aging process, combined treatment

Abstract We created AA2024–AA1050 and AA2024–AA1050/0.005 vol.% Al2O3 nanocomposites by six accumulative roll bonding (ARB) process cycles. We used AA2024 and AA1050 sheets with a thickness of 0.7 mm and plate-shaped alumina nanoparticles to create a composite. The two AA1050 and one AA2024 sheets (among the two AA1050 sheets) were ARB-ed up to six cycles with and without adding alumina nanoparticles. Also, a sample of the AA1050 without composite making was ARB-ed up to six cycles. We aged some composites after the ARB process in the furnace at 110, 150, and 190 °C. This project performed SEM, TEM, and EDS-MAP analyses, tensile strength, microhardness, and Pin-on-Disc tests to study the ARB-ed sheets. The results of the tensile tests showed that the tensile strength of AA2024–AA1050 created by the six cycles ARB process was two times more than primary AA1050. Also, the wear resistance of this composite was 74% more than six cycles ARB-ed the AA1050. Using 0.005 vol.% alumina nanoparticles in AA2024–AA1050 composite improved its wear resistance by 30%. In the following, the aging process caused an improvement in tensile strength and total elongation of AA2024–AA1050/Al2O3 nanocomposites.

Abstract The issue of cigarette butts is an environmental crisis that has affected the world. Despite their small size, CBs are one of the most common types of solid waste found in public places, particularly in coastal areas. The aim of this study was to investigate the adsorption behavior of microfibers obtained from cigarette butts on tetracycline before and after aging. 1 g of CBs was added to 50 mL of distilled water and stirred at 220 rpm for 2 h, then filtered through Whatman 0.45 µm filter paper, and the resulting MFs were dried at 60 °C for 24 h. To simulate aging, the MFs were subjected to an ultrasonic treatment at a frequency of 80 Hz and a power of 70 W for 4 h. The adsorption behavior of aged and fresh MFs was investigated using solutions containing TTC in the range of 5–20 mg/L. This study showed that ultrasonically aged MFs had a greater tendency to adsorb TTC than fresh MFs due to an increased surface area and changes in surface chemistry. It can be concluded that as the age of MFs increases, they adsorb more concentration of pollutants. This can lead to increased contamination of MFs in the presence of contaminants.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small phospholipid bilayer-bond structures released by diverse cell types into the extracellular environment, maintaining homeostasis of the cell by balancing cellular stress. This article provides a comprehensive overview of extracellular vesicles, their heterogeneity, and diversified roles in cellular processes, emphasizing their importance in the elimination of unwanted molecules. They play a role in regulating oxidative stress, particularly by discarding oxidized toxic molecules. Furthermore, endoplasmic reticulum stress induces the release of EVs, contributing to distinct results, including autophagy or ER stress transmission to following cells. ER stress-induced autophagy is a part of unfolded protein response (UPR) and protects cells from ER stress-related apoptosis. Mitochondrial-derived vesicles (MDVs) also play a role in maintaining homeostasis, as they carry damaged mitochondrial components, thereby preventing inflammation. Moreover, EVs partake in regulating aging-related processes, and therefore they can potentially play a crucial role in anti-aging therapies, including the treatment of age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's disease or cardiovascular conditions. Overall, the purpose of this article is to provide a better understanding of EVs as significant mediators in both physiological and pathological processes, and to shed light on their potential for therapeutic interventions targeting EV-mediated pathways in various pathological conditions, with an emphasis on age-related diseases. Despite the aging population, studies on the subject are scarce, notably focusing on the impotence experienced by older adults when purchasing food products. This research aims to analyze the vulnerability of older people during their food purchases. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we conducted 17 telephone semi-structured interviews with people aged 60 or over, food buyers in person, identified as independent. The content analysis using the software IRAMUTEQ showed problematic packaging and labels; predisposition to repeat previous choices due to the wide variety of foods; excessive portions incompatible with the social changes experienced by older adults; reduction of commensality; physical elements of the supermarket excluding older adults; and the COVID-19 pandemic as an impediment to maximizing well-being due to changes in habits and alternative shopping modalities needs. Introduction: The hierarchical network architecture of the human brain, pivotal to cognition and behavior, can be explored via gradient analysis using restingstate functional MRI data. Although it has been employed to understand brain development and disorders, the impact of aging on this hierarchical architecture and its link to cognitive decline remains elusive. Methods: This study utilized resting-state functional MRI data from 350 healthy adults (aged 20--85) to investigate the functional hierarchical network using connectome gradient analysis with a cross-age sliding window approach. Gradient-related metrics were estimated and correlated with age to evaluate trajectory of gradient changes across lifespan. Results: The principal gradient (unimodal-to-transmodal) demonstrated a significant non-linear relationship with age, whereas the secondary gradient (visual-to-somatomotor) showed a simple linear decreasing pattern. Among the principal gradient, significant age-related changes were observed in the somatomotor, dorsal attention, limbic and default mode networks. The changes in the gradient scores of both the somatomotor and frontal--parietal networks were associated with greater working memory and visuospatial ability. Gender differences were found in global gradient metrics and gradient scores of somatomotor and default mode networks in the principal gradient, with no interaction with age effect. Discussion: Our study delves into the aging trajectories of functional connectome gradient and its cognitive impact across the adult lifespan, providing insights for future research into the biological underpinnings of brain function and pathological models of atypical aging processes. In the modern world, many products are disposable or have a very short lifespan, while at the same time, those products are made from materials that will remain in the environment in the form of waste for hundreds or even thousands of years. It is a serious problem; non-biodegradable polymer wastes are part of environmental pollution and generate microplastics, which accumulate in the organisms of living beings. One of the proposed solutions is biodegradable polymers and their composites. In our work, three types of polylactide-based composites with plant-derived fillers: microcellulose powder, short flax fibers, and wood flour at 2 wt.% were prepared. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based biocomposite properties were characterized in terms of mechanical and surface properties together with microscopic analysis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), before and after a UV (ultraviolet)-light-aging process to determine the effects of each cellulose-based additive on the UV-induced degradation process. This research shows that the addition of a cellulose additive can improve the properties of the material in terms of the UV-aging process, but the form of the chosen cellulose form plays a crucial role in this case. The testing of physicochemical properties demonstrated that not only can mechanical properties be improved, but also the time of degradation under UV light exposure can be controlled by the proper selection of the reinforcing phase and the parameters of the extrusion and injection molding process. The obtained results turned out to be very interesting, not only in terms of the cost reduction of the biocomposites themselves, as mainly the waste from the wood industry was used as a low-cost filler, but also that the additive delays the aging process occurring during UV light exposure. Even a small, 2 wt.% addition of some of the tested forms of cellulose delayed surface degradation, which is one of the most important factors affecting the biodegradation process. The circular economy forces societies to take actions aimed at giving post-consumer products a "second life". As we know, wood is perfect for this. Moreover, reusing wood helps keep carbon in circulation, thus limiting its emissions into the atmosphere. It turns out that extensive research on determining the durability of wood is very useful and valuable for one more reason. Well, they can be used to create a model to determine the usefulness of wood, which has only apparently lost its utility value during many years of exposure to external factors. The research subject was samples of wood impregnated with protection agents and modified, originating from many years of field tests. The aim of the research was to correlate the results of wood durability determined after a period of exposure in open space with the results of determining the potential usefulness of such wood. On this basis, a model for determining the value of post-consumer wood was created. As a main result of post-consumer wood analysis, the high durabilities against C. puteana with mass loss below 3% were noticed for acetylated, furfurylated, and CCA-treated wood. We created AA2024–AA1050 and AA2024–AA1050/0.005 vol.% Al2O3 nanocomposites by six accumulative roll bonding (ARB) process cycles. We used AA2024 and AA1050 sheets with a thickness of 0.7 mm and plate-shaped alumina nanoparticles to create a composite. The two AA1050 and one AA2024 sheets (among the two AA1050 sheets) were ARB-ed up to six cycles with and without adding alumina nanoparticles. Also, a sample of the AA1050 without composite making was ARB-ed up to six cycles. We aged some composites after the ARB process in the furnace at 110, 150, and 190 °C. This project performed SEM, TEM, and EDS-MAP analyses, tensile strength, microhardness, and Pin-on-Disc tests to study the ARB-ed sheets. The results of the tensile tests showed that the tensile strength of AA2024–AA1050 created by the six cycles ARB process was two times more than primary AA1050. Also, the wear resistance of this composite was 74% more than six cycles ARB-ed the AA1050. Using 0.005 vol.% alumina nanoparticles in AA2024–AA1050 composite improved its wear resistance by 30%. Introduction: The regenerative potential of cardiac stem and progenitor cells is affected by aging and detraining, with the C-Kit cardiac stem cell expressing the Nkx2.5 transcription factor playing a crucial role. Exercise is known to enhance organ regeneration during aging, but the mechanisms involved in new cardiomyocyte formation during physiological cardiac remodeling remain unclear. Material & Methods: Eighteen aged Wistar rats (~440g) were divided into three groups: Control (CO), aerobic training (AT) (5 days per week, 50-75% of maximum speed) for six weeks, and detraining (DT) for four weeks. RT-PCR analysis determined Nkx2.5 gene expression, while immunohistochemical staining identified C-kit-positive and Ki67-positive cardiac progenitor cells. Results: In heart tissue, C-Kit and Ki67 values significantly differed between the control–training (P=0.001) and training-detraining (P=0.001) groups but not between the control and detraining groups for C-Kit (P=0.502) and Ki67 (P=0.475). Nkx2.5 exhibited a significant difference between control-training (P=0.001), training-detraining (P=0.001), and control-detraining (P=0.006). Conclusion: Exercise increased the proliferation of heart stem cells, activating C-Kit differentiation and elevating Nkx2.5 expression, thereby delaying the effects of aging. However, detraining significantly impacted heart stem cell function, emphasizing the importance of sustained exercise for optimal cardiac health.

ABSTRACTThe aging process is crucial to improve the harmony and fullness of the flavor of baijiu. Nevertheless, the traditional aging process consumes space and times and significantly increased the loss of baijiu. Hence, how to shorten the aging time through manual intervention becomes the research hotspot. Thus, a new aging method of exposure to sunlight was established to accelerate the balance of flavor compounds in baijiu. It was still unclear about the quality variance factors and its influence on the flavor quality of BCSGB (banchengshaoguo baijiu) during the sun-exposure process. Hence, adsorption pen combined with GC–MS were utilized to identify trace components, and pH liquid–liquid extraction and GC–O–MS were employed to screen and assess flavor compounds. Afterward, based on the sensory evaluation of BCSGB, three assessment systems (sensory evaluation, mental test, and random forest) were created to screen the quality variance factors. Thus, the quality variance factors were responsive to changes in the flavor quality of BCSGB during the sun-exposure process, which support process quality monitoring and aging process optimization.

Thus, this in-vitro study aimed to evaluate the influence of restoration thickness and aging on the fracture behavior of provisional crowns fabricated using different techniques. Methods: A dentiform maxillary first molar was prepared using a highly filled epoxy resin material to construct identical die replicas. Four groups of provisional crowns were fabricated: Group 1 was milled at 1.5 mm occlusal thickness; Group 2 was milled at 0.9 mm thickness; Group 3 was 3D-printed at 1.5 mm occlusal thickness; and Group 4 was 3D-printed at 0.9 mm occlusal thickness. Eight crowns from each group were subjected to a thermocycling process for 5000 cycles between baths held at 5 °C and 55 °C with a dwell time of 30 s and transfer time of 5 s. The article describes the mechanism of oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acid esters and presents the effect of temperature as one of the factors accelerating this process. The consequences of aging for ester-based biofuels are discussed extensively. The article presents the results of aging of FAMEs obtained from frying oil and of FAMEs derived from unrefined rapeseed oil to examine the influence of temperature as a factor accelerating aging. Acid, peroxide and anisidine values were determined for each sample; additionally, IR spectra were measured. Based on the results, it was confirmed that temperature has a significant effect on the degradation of FAMEs. These changes are best represented by the anisidine value and the change in IR spectra. The paper presents the relationship between acid, peroxide and anisidine values. This paper also highlights the beneficial effect of natural antioxidants in the form of β–carotene, which is found in FAMEs derived from unrefined rapeseed oil.

Beef dry-aging consists of a selection of unpackaged prime cuts placed in a controlled environment cold room for several weeks. The goals are to concentrate flavors like nutty and beefy and to improve tenderness. The aim of this study was to verify the microbiological and physicochemical behavior and sensory perception of meat during a sample process example of meat dry-aging. Twelve beef loins were selected for 90 days of dry aging and placed in a cold room with average temperature, relative humidity and forced air 3.2 ± 0.7 °C, 60.7 ± 4.2% and 0.5–2 m/s, respectively. Samples of crust and lean meat were collected on days 1, 14, 21, 35, 60 and 90 of the dry aging process for microbiological, physicochemical (pH, aw, color L*a*b*) and sensory analysis. During drying, no pathogenic bacteria were detected, and the average counts were higher for the crust. The average values for water activity (aw) and pH were 0.98 ± 0.02 and 5.77 ± 0.015, respectively. A slight decrease in aw and an increase in pH were observed over the aging period (p < 0.05). The lower microbial counts on the lean meat and the overall assessment of freshness confirm the importance of good manufacturing and storage practices during dry aging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Methods: The recorded data helps us develop personalized aquatic programs to improve health and physical performance, tailored to the individual needs of participants, to be used over 6 months in 2024. A striking feature of COVID-19 disease is the broad spectrum of risk factors associated with case severity, as well as the diversity of clinical manifestations. While no central agent has been able to explain the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the factors that most robustly correlate with severity are risk factors linked to aging. Low serum levels of Klotho, an anti-aging protein, strongly correlate with the pathogenesis of the same risk factors and manifestations of conditions similar to those expressed in severe COVID-19 cases. The current manuscript presents original research on the effects of the exogenous application of Klotho, an anti-aging protein, in COVID-19 model mice. Klotho supplementation resulted in a statistically significant survival benefit in parametric and non-parametric models. Further research is required to elucidate the mechanistic role Klotho plays in COVID-19 pathogenesis as well as the possible modulation SARS-CoV-2 may have on the biological aging process. This work describes the flexural behavior of biocomposites composed of a polyurethane matrix derived from castor oil plants and coir fibers. A statistical design is performed to identify the effects of fiber alkaline treatment and aging on the flexural modulus and strength of the composites. Physical tests and failure analyses are carried out to better assess their mechanical performance. A second experiment at 100% relative humidity is performed on treated fiber composites to compare with those obtained by immersion in water. The flexural modulus of the composites is not significantly affected by the fiber alkali treatment, while the strength is reduced by 35.17% when treated fibers are considered. Increasing the exposure time of composites under both aging conditions progressively reduces their flexural properties. The aging process of biocomposites in an environment with 100% relative humidity takes twice as long to reduce to the same flexural properties as those aged in water. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) is widely used as a hole-transport layer (HTL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with inverted (p-i-n) structures. However, problems associated with the corrosivity of PEDOT:PSS prevent the commercialization of such PSCs. To solve this problem, we fabricated inverted PSCs using [2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl]phosphonic acid (2PACz) as HTL. We used a mixture of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and N, N-dimethylformamide in the perovskite precursor, which reduced the amount of the antisolvent chlorobenzene. We investigated the physical effects of the amount of antisolvent used. Soot particles play an important role in warming the atmosphere, but their optical absorption is highly uncertain due to their variable morphology and mixing states. Compared to short‐range transport, soot particles during long‐range transport normally undergo complicated aging processes. Here, we investigated the changes in microphysical properties and mixing states of soot particles during their long‐range transport in Eastern China. The dominant mixing state of soot particles transformed from partly coated at 60% by number to embedded status at 67% when they were transported to a downwind region 1,000 km away under cold fronts. The fractal dimension (Df) increased from 1.79 ± 0.05 for partly coated soot and 1.86 ± 0.07 for embedded soot to 1.83 ± 0.06 and 1.93 ± 0.05 following their transportation, respectively. Our study shows that aging processes of soot particles with chain‐like morphology caused their structural collapse. Moreover, we found that coating materials of aged soot particles changed from secondary inorganic‐dominated to organic‐dominated species during their long‐range transport, which suggests the aqueous formation of secondary organic aerosols on soot‐containing particles. The thick organic coating formation in some particles further induced soot redistribution from the particle center into the coating. We highlight that the Df at 1.83–1.93 is appropriate for assessing radiative absorption of long‐range transported soot particles in Eastern China and propose that soot redistribution may offset ∼13% optical absorption enhancement for long‐range transported soot particles. The microscopic changes in aged soot particles should be considered to precisely evaluate their optical absorption in the large‐scale haze layer. Background: Previous studies and meta-analyses have explored the relationship among testosterone, muscle strength, and physical function, to the best of our knowledge, no meta-analysis has investigated the effects of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) on subgroup of relatively hypogonadal older men. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of TRT in older men with low testosterone levels. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were systematically searched for articles published between January 1990 and April 2020. We included randomized controlled studies that investigated the effect of TRT and included older men (age >60 years) with relatively low testosterone levels. Studies were extracted following the PRISMA flowchart, and the included randomized controlled trials were evaluated using RoB 2.0. Our main outcome was muscle strength changes after TRT evaluated using a metaregression of confounding factors. Secondary outcomes included changes in physical performance and the risk ratio of adverse events. Random-effects meta-analyses of TRT on muscle strength and physical function were performed. Results: Thirteen studies with 2,043 patients were included. The mean age of subjects in various studies ranged from 65.9 years to 76 years. Transdermal testosterone dosages ranged from 5 to 10 g/day, while intramuscular options were 125 mg/week or 200 mg every 2 weeks. Oral testosterone supplementation was given at 160 mg/day in one study. Pooled meta‐analyses revealed greater muscle strength improvement after TRT compared with placebo (Hedges' g = 0.21; 95% CI: = 0.15–0.28). Intramuscular administration of TRT had greater efficacy (Hedges' g = 0.74; 95% CI: = 0.34–1.14) than transdermal and oral TRT (p < 0.001). A metaregression revealed that baseline serum total testosterone was associated with muscle strength improvement (β = −0.004, p = 0.002). The risk ratios of adverse events, including elevated prostate-specific antigen, acute coronary syndrome, and prostate cancer, were not significantly different. • What is the primary question addressed by this study? This study was intended to test, in healthy older adults, the hypothesis that differences between men and women would be found in the cognitive trajectories and the predictive factors associated with the identified trajectories. • What is the main finding of this study? This is the first study capturing the intrasex variability of cognitive aging, using the growth mixture models methodology. Differences by sex were found in the number and grouping of cognitive trajectories. Men maintained better their cognitive function, and the decline was sharper in women. Men and women may require different strategies for addressing cognitive aging. The objective of this study was to document the longitudinal trajectories of cognitive aging in a sample of cognitively healthy subjects of 55 years or older. The following differences between men and women were hypothesized: 1) in the cognitive loss through aging, 2) in the distinct trajectories identified; and 3) in the predictors associated with the identified trajectories. A 4-wave, population-based study in Zaragoza, Spain (1994–2006). A total of 2,403 individuals aged 55+ years, cognitively healthy at baseline. All participants had at least three measurements with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Validated Spanish versions of international instruments were used for assessment. Random effects linear panel regression model for analyzing differences by sex in MMSE scores through aging were performed, and growth mixture models (GMM) applied independently for each sex for modeling the longitudinal cognitive trajectories. Women showed lower mean MMSE scores in all phases and significantly higher loss in the MMSE from phases 2 to 3 and 3 to 4. The best fitting age-adjusted model of the cognitive trajectories was a 4-class GMM in men and a 3-class in women. Education was a predictor of cognitive trajectories in both men and women. Dependence on iADLs and alcohol status were predictors only for men, and depression and diabetes only for women. The identified differences by sex in cognitive trajectories and their associated factors suggest that men and women may require a different strategy when addressing cognitive aging. The influences of adding different amount of Ti (0%, 0.39%, 0.87%) and three kinds of different aging processes (T6, T6I6, RRA) on the microstructure and properties of Al-11.3Zn-3.2Mg-1.3Cu-0.2Zr-0.1Sr were investigated. Results show that an appropriate amount of Ti can effectively inhibit grain growth and thus achieve the effect of grain refinement. The contribution of dislocation density and dislocation strengthening become the biggest when Ti content is 0.39%. At the same time, the intergranular corrosion depth is the lowest when Ti content is 0.39%. Among the three aging processes, the alloys reach the greatest hardness and tensile strength in T6I6. The biggest tensile strength reaches 716.77 MPa. However, when aging at RRA, the alloys obtain the greatest elongation, reaching 7.2%, as well as the good corrosion resistance. The Xiecun Huangjiu (XCHJ), an exemplary representation of North Huangjiu, exhibits a distinct and invigorating aroma predominantly formed during its aging period. In this study, we observed dynamic changes in 16 key aroma compounds by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) during the aging of XCHJ, with compounds such as phenethylalcohol, isoamylalcohol, benzaldehyde, and ethylbenzoate initially increasing and then decreasing. Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) detected nineteen amino acids, with total content ranging from 1901.45 to 3764.45 mg/L. High-throughput sequencing indicated that Pseudomonas, Ochrobactrum, Moesziomyces and Aspergillus et al. were abundant in aged XCHJ. Totally, 4 bacteria and 8 fungi exhibited strong associations with aroma compounds production. Physicochemical properties were primarily interacted with Pseudomonas, Aspergillus, Pseudeurotium, Thermomyces, Bacteroides and Blautia. Furthermore, co-occurrence network analysis highlighted significant interactions between Pantoea, Rhodotorula, Monascus, and amino acids. These findings provide valuable insights for the regulation of aroma in aged XCHJ.

IntroductionHu sheep, known for its high quality and productivity, lack fundamental scientific research in China.MethodsThis study focused on the effects of 24 h postmortem aging on the meat physiological and transcriptomic alteration in Hu sheep.ResultsThe results showed that the 24 h aging process exerts a substantial influence on the mutton color, texture, and water content as compared to untreated group. Transcriptomic analysis identified 1,668 differentially expressed genes. Functional enrichment analysis highlighted the importance of glycolysis metabolism, protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum, and the FcγR-mediated phagocytosis pathway in mediating meat quality modification following postmortem aging. Furthermore, protein-protein interaction analysis uncovered complex regulatory networks involving glycolysis, the MAPK signaling pathway, protein metabolism, and the immune response.DiscussionCollectively, these findings offer valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying meat quality changes during postmortem aging in Hu sheep, emphasizing the potential for improving quality control strategies in mutton production.

Oranges contain many natural active chemicals, organic acids, and polysaccharides. Aging processing is commonly used to modify the color, quality, functional components, and stability of fruits. This study assesses the preparation of aging black oranges using various pre-treatments and solid fermentation. Oranges were aged for six weeks in fresh, non-blanching, blanching, and hot air-assisted aging cycle (AA) groups. The oranges’ shrinkage ratio, color difference values, and soluble solids content changed significantly (p < 0.05). Principal component analysis indicated that aging fermentation treatment accelerated glycolysis and increased the ratio of reducing sugars. The enhanced browning can be associated with the oxidation of ascorbic acid (0.66–0.47 mg/g) and the formation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) (0.09 mg/g). Furthermore, the presence of free polyphenols led to an increase in the total polyphenol and total flavonoid content. It also had a synergistic effect with 5-HMF in increasing the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical-scavenging capacity and ferric ion-reducing antioxidant power (p < 0.05). AA had superior α-glucosidase inhibitory ability increasing from 67.31 to 80.48%. It also reduced the development time by 33%. Therefore, aging technology can enhance the bioactive compounds in oranges and provide a reference for future whole-fruit aging fermentation and health product creation.

Background: The aging process contributes to the decline in physical capacity that leads to loss of independence in performing life activities. Immobility and instability are the most significant predictors and indicators of physical disability and dependence. As a result, a variety of assistive devices exist to address immobility and instability in older adults, including walkers, canes, crutches, wheelchairs and handrails. Sit-to-stand (STS) transitions are the most common transitions in daily mobility activities. The ability to perform STS transitions successfully is therefore one of the most important activities to focus attention on. As a result of physical deterioration, older adults will sooner or later be faced with their physical limitations, and in particular, will not be able to provide enough torque at critical body joints to make the STS transition. Aim: This paper suggests employing two-arm assistance using two handles located symmetrically in the body’s sagittal plane. During the aging process, people are faced with varying levels of muscle deterioration and body constraints and consequently require different levels of assistance to complete the transition successfully. This paper aims to develop a tool to find the optimum handle location for people based on their body constraints to reduce knee torque (identified as the critical joint in the STS transition). These findings are also used to measure the effects of assistive device handle position on the biomechanics of the two-arm assisted STS transition. Methods: For this purpose, a theoretical tool was developed by integrating human body kinetics with a multi-objective genetic algorithm to find the optimum hand force required at the seat-off point for a set of potential handle locations. The tool was set to achieve the minimum knee torque within the defined body constraints and assumptions. In line with the physics of the STS transition, the “seat-off point”, when subjects lose their seat support, was chosen as the most challenging point of the task. This was coupled with the “nose over toes” posture recommended to older adults by occupational therapists. Results and Discussion: The schematic of the developed tool shows that the best handle locations requiring the minimum torques at the body joints are positioned in handle zone 2, where the handles are placed vertically above the knee and below the hip joints and horizontally located ahead of the hip and behind the knee joints. Within this handle zone, both components of the hand forces (vertical downward and horizontal backward) provide assisting torque to all the body joints and consequently reduce the torques required at body joints.

Abstract Background A malignancy of the endocrine system, one of the most common types, is thyroid cancer. It is proven that children who receive radiation treatment for leukemia or lymphoma are at a heightened risk of thyroid cancer due to low-dose radiation exposure throughout childhood. Several factors can increase the risk of thyroid cancer (ThyCa), such as chromosomal and genetic mutations, iodine intake, TSH levels, autoimmune thyroid disorders, estrogen, obesity, lifestyle changes, and environmental contaminants. Objectives The study aimed to identify a specific gene as an essential candidate for thyroid cancer progression. We might be able to focus on developing a better understanding of how thyroid cancer is inherited. Methods The review article uses electronic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Central. The most frequently associated genes with thyroid cancer found on PubMed were BAX, XRCC1, XRCC3, XPO5, IL-10, BRAF, RET, and K-RAS. To perform an electronic literature search, genes derived from DisGeNET: a database of gene-disease associations, including PRKAR1A, BRAF, RET, NRAS, and KRAS, are used. Conclusion Examining the genetics of thyroid cancer explicitly emphasizes the primary genes associated with the pathophysiology of young and older people with thyroid cancer. Developing such gene investigations at the beginning of the thyroid cancer development process can identify better outcomes and the most aggressive thyroid cancers.

Abstract Background During biological aging, significant metabolic dysregulation in the central nervous system may lead to cognitive decline and neurodegeneration. However, the metabolomics of the aging process in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has not been thoroughly explored. Methods In this cohort study of CSF metabolomics using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC–MS), fasting CSF samples collected from 92 cognitively unimpaired adults aged 20–87 years without obesity or diabetes were analyzed. Results We identified 37 metabolites in these CSF samples with significant positive correlations with aging, including cysteine, pantothenic acid, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), aspartic acid, and glutamate; and two metabolites with negative correlations, asparagine and glycerophosphocholine. The combined alterations of asparagine, cysteine, glycerophosphocholine, pantothenic acid, sucrose, and 5-HIAA showed a superior correlation with aging (AUC = 0.982). These age-correlated changes in CSF metabolites might reflect blood–brain barrier breakdown, neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction in the aging brain. We also found sex differences in CSF metabolites with higher levels of taurine and 5-HIAA in women using propensity-matched comparison. Conclusions Our LC–MS metabolomics of the aging process in a Taiwanese population revealed several significantly altered CSF metabolites during aging and between the sexes. These metabolic alterations in CSF might provide clues for healthy brain aging and deserve further exploration.
