Abstract

The small spin-orbit interaction of carbon atoms in graphene promises a long spin diffusion length and potential to create a spin field-effect transistor. However, for this reason, graphene was largely overlooked as a possible spin-charge conversion material. We report electric gate tuning of the spin-charge conversion voltage signal in a single-layer graphene. Using spin pumping from yttrium iron garnet ferrimagnetic insulator and ionic liquid top gate we determined that the inverse spin Hall effect is the dominant spin-charge conversion mechanism in a single-layer graphene. From the gate dependence of the electromotive force we showed dominance of the intrinsic over Rashba spin-orbit interaction: a long-standing question in graphene research., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures (to appear in Phys. Abstract

The nanospace of the van der Waals (vdW) gap between structural units of two-dimensional (2D) materials serves as a platform for growing unusual 2D systems through intercalation and studying their properties. Various kinds ofmetal chlorides have previously been intercalated for tuning the properties of host layered materials, but the atomic structure of the intercalants remains still unidentified. In this study, we investigate the atomic structural transformation of molybdenum(V) chloride (MoCl 5 ) after intercalation into bilayer graphene (BLG). Using scanning transmission electron microscopy, we found that the intercalated material represents MoCl 3 networks, MoCl 2 chains, and Mo 5 Cl 10 rings. Giant lattice distortions and frequent structural transitions occur in the 2D MoCl x that have never been observed in metal chloride systems. The trend of symmetric to nonsymmetric structural transformations can cause additional charge transfer from BLG to the intercalated MoCl x , as suggested by our density functional theory calculations. Our study deepens the understanding of the behavior of matter in the confined space of the vdW gap in BLG and provides hints at a more efficient tuning of material properties by intercalation for potential applications, including transparent conductive films, optoelectronics, and energy storage.

Abstract

Unprecedented two-dimensional (2D) metal chloride structures were grown between sheets of bilayer graphene through intercalation of metal and chlorine atoms. Numerous spatially confined 2D phases of AlCl3 and CuCl2 distinct from their typical bulk forms were found, and the transformations between these new phases under the electron beam were directly observed by in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Our density functional theory calculations confirmed the metastability of the atomic structures derived from the STEM experiments and provided insights into the electronic properties of the phases, which range from insulators to semimetals. Additionally, the co-intercalation of different metal chlorides was found to create completely new hybrid systems; in-plane quasi-1D AlCl3/CuCl2 heterostructures were obtained. The existence of polymorphic phases hints at the unique possibilities for fabricating new types of 2D materials with diverse electronic properties confined between graphene sheets.

Abstract

In the past few decades, attention and research in the field of stem cell are progressing very rapidly. Hospitals in Indonesia have been using stem cells as an alternative to cure some illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, fractures and joints, dental implants, etc. Currently, adult stem cells can be obtained not only from the spinal cord and peripheral vessels, but also from fat tissues of the human body, where it can be isolated as adherent stem cells (mesenchymal stem cells). Consideration of fat tissue as the source of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for autologous tissue engineering is because they are readily available in abundant quantities through minimal invasive procedures, as well as easily cultured and propagated. It is possible to proliferate and differentiate into the desired direction of the network. Stem cell growth requires conditions to grow such as requiring optimum growing conditions such as an environmental temperature of 37°C and a concentration of 5% CO2. Maintenance of MSCs also requires a subculture process, i.e. the process of moving MSCs from a full culture medium to new media; continuous subculture process can cause changes in MSCs. The viability of stem cells may be disrupted by micro-conditions in wounds such as hypoxia, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to investigate whether alginate-based encapsulation can increase and maintenance stem cell growth at different temperature by using some concentration of alginate and CaCl2 as the formula. Results shown that alginat with low concentration and CaCl2 100mM is suitable for MSCs growth (as in MTT result shown) at 25°C temperature. This can be due to the MSCs encapsulated can adapt and grow within the alginate microcapsule with low concentration. In addition, the media may also easier to get into the microcapsule alginate.

Abstract

We report an electrical characterization of nanographite fibers (NGFs) by measuring current–voltage characteristics of the individual NGFs in air at room temperature in order to optimize the NGF mass production process. The NGFs were synthesized by thermal chemical vapor deposition with thermal annealing. The NGF contains many defects in comparison with a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) synthesized by arc discharge, which can be clearly confirmed in the current–voltage characteristic. The maximum current density, however, is typically 10[sup 8] A/cm[sup 2], which is comparable to that in the MWNT. The high-density current operation mechanism is inferred from the measured diameter dependence of the current-voltage characteristic in various diameter NGFs. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

Background: Obesity is an excessive fat accumulation in the body. Excessive consumption of carbohydrates, protein, and fat can increase the risk of obesity. It occurs when there is an imbalance between the energy number that goes through food and the energy that comes out through physical activity. Objectives: This study aimed to know the relationship between carbohydrate, protein, and fat consumption and obesity among the 2014 UKI Faculty of Medicine Students. Methods: This study was analytical observational research with a case-control design. The samples were 68 students from batch 2014. The data are analyzed by SPSS using Chi-square and logistic regression. Results: A total of 27.9% of students were obese, of which 33.3% were male and 25.5% were female. Based on the results of bivariate analysis, there was a significant relationship between obesity and protein consumption (p=0.048) and fat consumption (p=0.035), while there was no correlation between obesity incidence and carbohydrate consumption (p= 0.373). Conclusions: The incidence of obesity in UKI Medicine Students batch 2014 was caused by the high consumption of fat and protein. It was not caused by the consumption of carbohydrates.

Abstract

A detailed study of static and dynamic magnetic behavior of Fe3O4 nanoparticles with average particle sizes ranging from 5 to 150nm is presented. Findings state that the static and dynamic properties can be understood by considering changes in the single- particle anisotropy energy Ea through the effect of interparticle interactions in these concentrated systems.
