Climate change and anthropogenic disturbance in agricultural production systems can facilitate shifts in the distribution of arthropod pest species and in the range of plant hosts on which they feed. This study presents the first record of Tropical Sod Webworm (TSW), Herpetogramma phaeopteralis Guenée (Lepidoptera: Crambidae: Spilomelinae), on native or nativized species of the genus Axonopus (Poaceae) in Brazil. The occurrence of population outbreaks of this species was observed in March and April of 2024 among smallholder cattle farmers in Capão Alto and Campo Belo do Sul, both municipalities situated in the highlands of Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil. The caterpillars feed on leaves during the nocturnal nighttime period, causing extensive defoliation and forming large dry patches of grass. Phylogenetic analyses based on mtCOI support the morphological characterization indicated that the species is H. phaeopteralis. The phylogenetic tree, based on partial sequences of the COI gene, indicated that the Brazilian isolate is more closely related to the Peruvian isolate and is distinct from the American and Japanese isolates. Turfgrass production is an economically important activity in Brazil and, thus, H. phaeopteralis should be monitored to assess its establishment as a primary pest in the landscapes where host plants are employed., Competing Interests: Declarations. A bottleneck in sustainable fruit production is the replacement of chemical products with natural compounds. Matrine and oxymatrine, derived from a Chinese medicinal herb, have exhibited potential for controlling agricultural pests. However, there is no information regarding their effectiveness in managing dipterans. Thus, we carried out experiments to evaluate the effect of the botanical compounds matrine and oxymatrine on Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) adults under laboratory conditions. First, we tested four doses of the commercial product matrine, with distilled water as a control treatment. Each treatment was offered as a droplet, to five D. suzukii couples in screened cages. Adult mortality was evaluated at intervals of 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 h post-exposure. All doses tested of the commercial matrine-based product caused up to 58% of mortality in D. suzukii adults. Second, the consumption of pure extract of oxymatrine was evaluated using a CAFE assay. Three D. suzukii females were exposed to oxymatrine concentrations of 0.05, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, and 7.0% in a 20% sugar solution for 24 h. Afterwards, the flies were deprived of food for 40 h, and mortality was evaluated. The pure extract of oxymatrine induced mortality in D. suzukii females only at doses of 2.5, 5.0, and 7.0%. Organophosphate (OP) insecticides have been used to control Grapholita molesta (Busck, 1916) in Brazil since 1990. However, the evolution of pest insecticide resistance and toxicological reassessments has led to the replacement of OPs with other chemical groups. This study evaluated the toxicity of the insecticides abamectin + cyantraniliprole (1.1 + 3.7 g a.i./100 L-1), acetamiprid + etofenproxi (9.1 + 16.5 g a.i./100 L-1), emamectin benzoate (0.5 g a.i./100 L-1), Sophora flavescens (Fabales: Fabaceae) (22.8 g a.i./100 L-1), phosmet (87.5 g a.i./100 L-1), and indoxacarb (11.2 g a.i./100 L-1) to eggs, larvae, and adults of G. molesta. Additionally, the residual activity of these insecticides in apple orchards was assessed, and the diagnostic concentration for resistance monitoring was estimated using LC99 values (Lethal Concentration that causes 99% mortality in a susceptible population). In larval studies, all insecticides resulted in mortality rates of more than 90%. The insecticide acetamiprid + etofenproxi reduced larval hatching by 99%. This insecticide with phosmet and Sophora flavescens caused over 80% adult mortality and had a 14-day residual activity in apple orchards. The estimated LC99 (μg.ml-1) for resistance monitoring were 1.75 (indoxacarb), 6.45 (metaflumizone), 9.10 (acetamiprid + etofenproxi), 9.67 (Sophora flavescens), 36.13 (phosmet), and 45.61 (abamectin + cyantraniliprole). Objective: An eucalyptus essential oil-based nanoemulsion was produced and evaluated for its antimicrobial properties against Streptococcus mutans and its cytotoxicity in the surface mucous cells of rabbits. Methods: The essential oil-based nanoemulsion was synthesized with two species of eucalyptus- Eucalyptus citriodora and Eucalyptus globulus -followed by physicochemical characterization and the determination of antimicrobial activity and cell viability. Subsequently, the mouthwash formulations (fluoride and fluoride-free) were functionalized with the nanoemulsion, and their in vitro antimicrobial actions were evaluated against S. mutans . Results: The nanoemulsion presented an average particle size of around 100 nm, a polydispersity index close to 0.3, a zeta potential between -19 and -30 mV, a pH close to 7, a spherical shape, and a cell viability above 50%. The antimicrobial activity analysis showed that the nanoemulsion was effective in the control of S. mutans. The mouthwashes functionalized with the nanoemulsion also presented bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties. Conclusions: The bio-based material produced with eucalyptus essential oil presented adequate physicochemical characteristics, with the potential to be used as an innovative material in preventive dentistry, contributing to the maintenance of oral and systemic health.

The African planthopper Leptodelphax maculigera (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) has been recently reported in many places in Brazil in association with maize. Its occurrence in maize production fields in Brazil has brought concerns to the corn production chain regarding the possibility of this planthopper to be a vector for maize bushy stunt phytoplasma (MBSP), corn stunt spiroplasma ( Spiroplasma kunkelii ), maize rayado fino virus (MRFV), and maize striate mosaic virus (MSMV). The phytoplasma and spiroplasma, which are bacteria belonging to the class Mollicutes, and the two viruses are associated with the corn stunt disease complex. Given the presence of the African planthopper species and the corn stunt complex in Brazil, we further investigated the abundance of this planthopper species in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, and whether the planthopper can carry the four pathogens. We inspected 12 maize production fields in different municipalities in the state for 20 weeks, using two yellow sticky traps for each maize field. The sticky traps were replaced weekly. A total of 130 specimens of L. maculigera were captured, with a great discrepancy in quantity among locations and weeks. We detected the mollicute MBSP and the viruses MRFV and MSMV in L. maculigera , whereas S. kunkelii was absent in the assessed African planthopper samples. The molecular detection of the phytoplasma and the viruses in field-collected African planthoppers is strong evidence that this insect species has the ability to acquire those pathogens through feeding from the phloem of diseased maize plants. This study investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of hydrophilic and lipophilic extracts from juçara fruits (Euterpe edulis Martius) through measurement of nitric oxide (NOx) and cytokines (IL-12p70, TNF-α, INF-γ, MCP-1, IL-6, and IL-10). J774 macrophages were stimulated with lipopolysaccharides (1 µg/mL) and treated with various concentrations (1-100 µg/mL) of juçara fruits extracts from crude extracts, and hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and butanol fractions. Potential relationships between the phenolic composition of the extracts determined by LC-ESI-MS/MS and their anti-inflammatory capacity were also evaluated. Hexane and dichloromethane fractions inhibited NOx and IL-12p70 while increased IL-10. Hexane fractions also decreased IL-6 and IFN-γ production. Hexane and dichloromethane fractions showed a higher number of phenolic compounds (32 and 34, respectively) than the other extracts tested and were also the only ones that presented benzoic acid and pinocembrin. The presence of plastics in the oceans has already become a pervasive phenomenon. Marine pollution by plastics surpasses the status of an emerging threat to become a well-established environmental problem, boosting research on this topic. However, despite many studies on the main seas and oceans, it is necessary to compile information on the South American Atlantic Ocean Coast to identify the lack of research and expand knowledge on marine plastic pollution in this region. Accordingly, this paper conducted an in-depth review of monitoring methods, sampling, and identification of macroplastics and microplastics (MPs) in water, sediments, and biota, including information on legal requirements from different countries as well as non-governmental initiatives. Brazil was the country with the highest number of published papers, followed by Argentina. MPs accounted for 75 % of the papers selected, with blue microfibers being the most common morphology, whereas PE and PP were the most abundant polymers. Also, a lack of standardization in the methodologies used was identified; however, the sites with the highest concentrations of MPs were the Bahía Blanca Estuary (Argentina), Guanabara Bay (Brazil), and Todos os Santos Bay (Brazil), regardless of the method applied. Regarding legislation, Uruguay and Argentina have the most advanced policies in the region against marine plastic pollution due to their emphasis on the life cycle and the national ban on certain single-use plastics. Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers., Poaceae) is one of the most important pasture grasses used in milk production systems in southern Brazil, with an increasing expansion of cultivated areas in recent years. Here, we report the first occurrence of the planthopper Metadelphax propinqua (Fieber) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) feeding on bermudagrass in Brazil. Population outbreaks of this species were observed in January/February 2023 in a commercial hay production farm in the municipality of Chapecó, Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil. Metadelphax propinqua was found in association with three cultivars of C. dactylon (Tifton 85, Jiggs, and Vaquero). The infested plants showed leaf chlorosis and a reduced plant growth rate due to sap sucking and toxin injection as well as honeydew deposition on the leaves, which led to the development of sooty mold. In addition, this delphacid species has been reported as a vector of important pathogens to bermudagrass species and other row crops. The green-belly stink bug (Diceraeus melacanthus Dallas (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae)) is a key pest of corn-soybean crop systems and the management of this pest is difficult due to behavioral characteristics. However, products that alter its behavior, such as arrestants, dislodgers, and phagostimulants, have been used in an attempt to improve the effectiveness of chemical control. In this study, the effect of these products on the walking behavior of nymphs and adults of D. melacanthus was initially evaluated through computational behavioral tracking (Ethovision system). Adults of D. melacanthus exposed to the dislodgers Creolin Pearson and Quimifol S450 (sulfur) significantly increased the distance covered and the walking speed. On the other hand, the only treatment that significantly affected the walking behavior of nymphs was the treatment with soy milk (phagostimulant). The physical-chemical analyses indicated considerable changes in the pH and electrical conductivity of mixtures of such products with insecticides from different chemical groups, as well as lack of homogeneity (physical incompatibility). Nevertheless, none of the products tested improved the control efficacy of an insecticide based on imidacloprid + beta-cyfluthrin, either in laboratory tests (contact bioassay) or in tests conducted in corn crops during 2 crop harvests. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical compatibility of mixtures of synthetic and botanical limonoid-based insecticides, as well as the toxicity of these associations, in the management of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) under laboratory and field conditions. For this, the associations of 4 commercial botanical insecticides based on neem registered in Brazil (Azamax, Agroneem, Azact CE, and Fitoneem) were tested with synthetic insecticides from the group of growth regulators (IGRs [triflumuron, lufenuron, methoxyfenozide and tebufenozide]). When mixed, all combinations caused a significant reduction in the pH of the mixture and a significant increase in electrical conductivity. However, all tested combinations showed similar stability behavior to the negative control (distilled water), which demonstrated their physicochemical compatibility. Furthermore, in laboratory and field bioassays, mixtures of IRGs with limonoid-based formulations provided satisfactory effects in the management of S. frugiperda. However, binary mixtures of insecticide Intrepid 240 SC with Azamax or Azact CE (at LC25 previously estimated) showed the highest toxicities on S. frugiperda larvae in laboratory bioassays and damage reduction caused by S. frugiperda in a 2-yr field experiments. Agricultural output needs significant increases to feed the growing population. Fertilizers are essential for plant production systems, with nitrogen (N) being the most limiting nutrient for plant growth. It is commonly supplied to crops as urea. Still, due to volatilization, up to 50 % of the total N application is lost. Slow or controlled release fertilizers are being developed to reduce these losses. The co-application of zinc (Zn) as a micronutrient can increase N absorption. Thus, we hypothesize that the controlled delivery of both nutrients (N and Zn) in an integrated system can improve uptake efficiency. Here we demonstrate an optimized fertilizer nanocomposite based on urea:urea-formaldehyde matrix loaded with ZnSO 4 or ZnO. This nanocomposite effectively stimulates maize development, with consequent adequate N uptake, in an extreme condition - a very nutrient-poor sand substrate. Our results indicate that the Zn co-application is beneficial for plant development. However, there were advantages for ZnO due to its high Zn content. We discuss that the dispersion favors the Zn delivery as the nanoparticulated oxide in the matrix. Concerning maize development, we found that root morphology is altered in the presence of the fertilizer nanocomposite. This study aimed to characterize the quantitative and qualitative damage caused by Deois flexuosa (Walker) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) adults in Axonopus catharinensis cv. SCS 315 Catarina and Cynodon dactylon (Tifton 85 and Jiggs cultivars) under different infestation densities and, consequently, the expression of tolerance-type resistance. For this purpose, potted plants were infested with different insect densities (0, 5, 10, 20, and 40 adults m -2 ). The impact of the infestation levels was assessed in the first growth cycle (10-day coexistence period) and in the regrowth (40 days after the first cut, without infestation) based on crop yield and chemical-bromatological composition as well as on photosynthetic pigments and hydrogen peroxide content. The principal component analysis relating infestation density and chemical-bromatological parameters showed a positive correlation between infestation density of D. flexuosa and the contents of neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and the dry matter (DM). On the other hand, infestation density inversely correlated with the tillering rate, photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a and b, carotenoids), and iron content. In general, the impacts on DM production and chemical-bromatological composition were lower in A. catharinensis cv. SCS 315 Catarina when compared to the Cynodon species, possibly because A. catharinensis has higher tillering capacity and does not show a reduction in the photosynthetic pigments, which may act as compensating factors to D. flexuosa damage. In face of the alarming world population growth predictions and its threat to food security, the development of sustainable fertilizer alternatives is urgent. Moreover, fertilizer performance should be assessed not only in terms of yield but also in root system development, as it impacts soil fertility and crop productivity. Fertilizers containing a polysulfide matrix (PS) with dispersed struvite (St) were studied for S and P nutrition due to their controlled-release behavior. Soybean cultivation in a closed system with St/PS composites provided superior biomass compared to a reference of triple superphosphate (TSP) with ammonium sulfate (AS), with up to 3 and 10 times higher mass of shoots and roots, respectively. Root system architectural changes may explain these results, with a higher proliferation of second order lateral roots in response to struvite ongoing P delivery. The total root length was between 1,942 and 4,291 cm for plants under St/PS composites and only 982 cm with TSP/AS. While phosphorus uptake efficiency was similar in all fertilized treatments (11-14%), St/PS achieved a 22% sulfur uptake efficiency against only 8% from TSP/AS. Driven by the environmental stress caused by plastics, the interest on eco-friendly polymers has attracted the attention of researchers and industry. Thermoplastic starch (TPS) and poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) blends are good examples of sustainable material, exhibiting synergism between economic viability and properties. However, its biodegradability aligned to nutrients release has been less explored in agricultural applications. Herein, it is proposed the investigation of biodegradability of urea plasticized TPS and PCL blends, compatibilized with PCL grafted with maleic anhydride (PCL-g-MA), aiming fertilizers and sustainable agricultural products. The blends were prepared in a twin-screw extruder using a flat film die. The mechanical, thermal, morphological, and physical properties of TPS-PCL films were characterized, including biodegradation analysis via Bartha respirometer and nitrogen release in the soil. The films presented biodegradability and nitrogen release as a function of TPS content on blends formulation, presenting flexibility and robust mechanical properties. To attain sustainable agricultural crop protection, tools such as host plant resistance, enhanced ecosystem services (i.e. conserving natural enemies) and the deployment of companion plants should be promoted in pest management programmes. These agro system manipulations could be based on chemical ecology studies considering the interactions with natural enemies and pests, regarding specifically plant defence signalling. Further, new crop protection strategies might rise from widening the knowledge regarding how herbivore-induced plant volatiles can govern a multifaceted defence response including natural enemy recruitment, pest repellence or induced defence in neighbouring plants. It is crucial to use a multitrophic approach to understand better the interactions involving companion plants, herbivores and natural enemies in the field, increasing the knowledge to build more efficient and sustainable pest management strategies. In this review, we explore the perspectives of companion plants and their semiochemicals to promote conservation biological control according to the 'smart plants' concept. Background: The natural abundance of stable isotope 15 N (δ 15 N) in production systems has emerged as an alternative to distinguish organic products from conventional ones. This study evaluated the use of δ 15 N values recorded for nitrogen fertilizers, soil and plant tissue in order to set the differences between organic and conventional agricultural production systems applied to rice, potatoes, apple and banana crops., Results: Values of δ 15 N recorded for N sources ranged from +5.58‰ to +18.27‰ and from -3.55‰ to +3.19‰ in organic and synthetic fertilizers, respectively. The whitefly Bemisia tabaci(Gennadius) MEAM 1 is one of the main insect species that colonize tomato plants and cause direct and indirect damage. The use of botanical derivatives may be a valuable method of insect control to reduce the inappropriate use of synthetic insecticides on crops. In this study, we evaluated the bioactivity of ethanolic extracts prepared from Annonaceae species compared to that of the commercial insecticides based on acetogenins (Anosom® 1 EC, anonine 10,000 mg L -1 ) and thiamethoxam (Actara® 250 WG) on eggs, nymphs, and adults of the whitefly in tomato. Initially, the effects of the ethanolic seed extracts of Annona mucosa (Jacq.), Annona muricata L., and Annona sylvatica A.St.-Hil on adult insect behavior were evaluated. The rates of infestation and oviposition deterrence indicated the inhibitory effects of the extract of A. muricata (500 mg L -1 ). Then, the possible systemic effects of the extracts were evaluated; however, no effects on nymphal development or insect viability were observed. The LC 50 and LC 90 of the ethanolic extract of A. mucosa seeds at 500 mg L -1 (10.83 and 200.24 mg L -1 , respectively) were estimated and were used in ovicidal tests and compared to positive (Actara® 250 WG and Anosom® 1 EC), and negative controls (water: acetone, 1:1 v/v). At LC 90 , fewer eggs (35.00%) had hatched at 13 days after application than in the other treatments. Nitrogen fertilization has been a critical factor for high crop productivity, where urea is currently the most used N source due to its high concentration and affordability. Nevertheless, urea fast solubilization leads to frequent losses and lower agronomic efficiency. The modification of urea structure by condensation with formaldehyde has been proposed to improve nutrient uptake by plants and to reduce environmental losses. Herein we show that the co-formulation with Zn strongly modifies the N release (in lab conditions) and, more important, the Zn source-ZnSO 4 or ZnO-has a critical role. Urea-formaldehyde (UF) served as a matrix for the zinc sources, and chemical characterizations revealed that Zn particles influenced the length of the polymeric chain formation. Release tests in an aqueous medium showed that the UF matrix favors ZnO release and, on the other hand, delays ZnSO 4 delivery. Soil incubation with the fertilizer composites proved the slow-release of N from UF, is ideal for optimizing nutritional efficiency. Our results indicated that the ZnO-UF system has beneficial effects for both nutrients, i.e., reduces N volatilization and increases Zn release.

The development of smart and eco-friendly fertilizers is pivotal to guarantee food security sustainably. Phosphate rock and struvite are promising alternatives for P fertilization; nevertheless, the solubility of these sources is a challenge for consistent use efficiency. Here, we propose using a polysulfide obtained via inverse vulcanization as a novel controlled-release fertilizer matrix in a system containing either Bayóvar rock (Bay) or struvite (Str). The polysulfide provides S for plants after being biologically oxidized to sulfate in soil, generating local acidity for P solubilization. After 15 days of soil incubation, the composites with 75 wt % Str and 75 wt % Bay achieved, respectively, 3 and 2 times the S oxidation from the elemental sulfur reference. Results indicated that P content stimulates the soil microorganisms' activity for S oxidation. The matrix had a physical role in improving Bay dissolution and regulating the rapid release from Str. Moreover, the available P in soil was 25-30 mg/dm 3 for Bay composites, while for pure Bay, it was 9 mg/dm 3 .

This work aimed to evaluate the residual action of five insecticides on larvae and adults of the predators Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) and Eriopis connexa (Germar). The insecticides gamma-cyhalothrin, imidacloprid+beta-cyfluthrin, methomyl, thiamethoxam, and thiamethoxam+lambda-cyhalothrin were sprayed in pod bean plants until the point of runoff. Weekly, at 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31 days, first instar larvae and adults of both predators were exposed to leaves containing dry residues of the insecticides. Based on the mortality observed throughout the bioassays, the insecticides were classified according to the scale of the residual effects proposed by the International Organization for Biological and Integrated Control (IOBC). Except for thiamethoxam+lambda-cyhalothrin, which was moderately persistent (class 3) to larvae of C. externa and E. connexa, all other tested insecticides were persistent (class 4) to larvae of both species. Gamma-cyhalothrin, imidacloprid + beta-cyfluthrin, and methomyl were persistent (class 4) to C. externa adults, while thiamethoxam was moderately persistent (class 3) and thiamethoxam + lambda-cyhalothrin was slightly persistent (class 2) to the adult stage. As for E. connexa adults, imidacloprid + beta-cyfluthrin and methomyl were persistent (class 4) and gamma-cyhalothrin, thiamethoxam, and thiamethoxam + lambda-cyhalothrin were moderately persistent (class 3). Thus, due to extended residual effect, these insecticides must be avoided when larvae and adults of both predators are active in the crop.

Fruit processing waste, such as kernels (endocarp + seed) of avocado [Persea americana Mill. (Lauraceae)], could be used as raw material in the preparation of botanical insecticides. In light of this potential, this study assessed the insecticidal action of extracts and fractions from kernels of two avocado cultivars (Breda and Margarida) on Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) biotype B, an important pest species in tropical conditions. Ethanolic and aqueous extracts prepared from kernels of P. americana, regardless of the plant cultivar used, caused promising insecticidal activity to whitefly nymphs. Based on yield in crude extracts [10.32 and 9.85% (w/w), respectively, for cultivars Breda and Margarida], on the bioassay results with crude extracts and on the chemical profiles, the ethanolic extract of kernels of P. americana cv. Breda was chose for the continuation of the study. Thus, the ethanolic extract of kernels of cv. Breda (LC 50  = 197.84 ppm and LC 90  = 567.19 ppm) was selected and subjected to fractionation by the liquid-liquid partition technique. The hexane and dichloromethane fractions of this extract caused significant mortality of nymphs. The analysis using the ultraviolet (UV) and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) showed the presence of long-chain aliphatic compounds (alkanols or acetogenins of Lauraceae), alkylfurans (or avocadofurans), and unsaturated fatty acids in these fractions, which are possibly related to bioactivity observed in B. tabaci, besides saccharides. The results show that kernels of P. americana are promising sources of compounds with insecticidal action for the control of B. tabaci biotype B, a great opportunity to transform environmental problems into eco-friendly solutions to agriculture.

Tetranychus urticae is the main pest of strawberry crops and can cause up to 80% of productivity losses under high infestations. Aiming to search T. urticae management alternatives compatible with eco-friendly or organic-based food production systems, this study evaluated the lethal and sublethal toxicities of formulated derivatives from Annonaceae (rich in acetogenins) against this pest species. In addition, it also evaluated the selectivity of the most promising formulation to the predatory mites Neoseiulus californicus and Phytoseiulus macropilis, which are largely applied in biological control in Brazil. Among the derivatives tested, the emulsion from the ethanolic seed extract of Annona mucosa-ESEAm (major component: acetogenin bis-tetrahydrofuran rolliniastatin-1) caused pronounced mortality of T. urticae after 120 h of exposure (LC 50  = 465.5 mg L -1 ), in a comparable or superior manner to an abamectin-based synthetic acaricide used as positive control (LC 50  = 1243.4 mg L -1 ). Moreover, ESEAm exposure resulted in a significant decrease in the number of eggs laid by females and caused the most pronounced ovicidal action for T. urticae, with only 5% embryonic viability. However, ESEAm also showed high toxicity to the predatory mites tested, causing 100% mortality for both species after 120 h exposure, similar to abamectin. The interaction between these bioacaricides and biological control agents should be tested under field conditions to further assess the potential ecological selectivity of these derivatives.

The present study evaluated the lethal toxicity and oviposition deterrence of ethanolic extracts of Annona mucosa Jacq., Annona muricata L., and Annona sylvatica A. St.-Hil on Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) compared with those of a limonoid-based bioinsecticide (Azamax™ 1.2 EC-azadiractin +3-tigloyl-azadiractol) and a synthetic spinosyn-based insecticide (Delegate™ 250 WG-spinetoram). In addition, the efficacy of the selected toxic bait formulations was evaluated by mixing them with food attractants (Anamed™, 3% Biofruit and 7% sugarcane molasses). In the topical application and ingestion bioassays (2000 mg L -1 ), the aqueous emulsion of the A. mucosa extract caused greater than 80% mortality of A. fraterculus adults in a similar manner to the spinosyn-based synthetic insecticide. Concentration-response curves were performed for the most promising treatments and showed an activity level dependent on the mode of contamination, exposure time, and applied concentration. In bioassays with and without choice, the A. mucosa (77%), A. muricata (51%), A. sylvatica (60%), Azamax™ (74%), and Delegate™ 250 WG (100%) significantly reduced the number of punctures and galleries in grape berries. In combination with the food attractants Anamed™, 3% Biofruit, and 7% sugarcane molasses, the emulsion of the A. mucosa extract had a residual effect similar to that of the spinetoram insecticide, with a mortality rate of over 80% of A. fraterculus adults up to 14 days after application (DAA) in the absence of rain. Thus, acetogenin-rich formulations, especially from A. mucosa seeds, are useful alternatives for the integrated management of A. fraterculus in agricultural orchards.

Sparkling wines were elaborated with the nontraditional varieties Villenave, Niagara, Manzoni, and Goethe, and monitored in relation to the changes in phenolic composition, browning index, and glutathione content during 18 months of biological aging (sur lies). Important changes in the phenolic profile, browning index, and glutathione content were observed in the sparkling wines during the over-lees aging period. The major phenolic compound in the sparkling wines was tyrosol, followed by caffeic, trans-caftaric, and gallic acids, catechin and epicatechin. The biological aging led to an increase in the individual phenolic compounds, especially caffeic, gallic, and ellagic acids, and an increase in the browning index was also observed during the aging period. Caffeic acid was significantly correlated with browning and aging period in all sparkling wines, which indicates that this compound can be useful as a quality marker to monitoring the biological aging profile of white sparkling wines. The results obtained indicate that the aging period (sur lie) had an important influence on the changes in the unique phenolic profile of the sparkling wines elaborated with nontraditional varieties. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: In sparkling wines production, the secondary fermentation occurring in the sealed bottle during the vinification contributes greatly to their quality and sensory complexity. The Vitis labrusca and hybrid grapes varieties represent most of the grapes cultivated in Brazil being employed in the elaboration of juices and wines. These varieties present a great oenological potential and have not been explored yet regarding to the production of white sparkling wines. The use of these nontraditional grape varieties cultivated in South Brazil may be a viable alternative in the production of white sparkling wines with biological aging potential and particular bioactive properties., (© 2019 Institute of Food Technologists®.)

The effect of mannoproteins on the evolution of rosé sparkling wines during over-lees aging was investigated on the basis of the chemical characterization of polyphenols, organic acids, macro- and microelements using a combined analytical approach. Variations on these constituents were assessed using Raman and near-infrared spectroscopy. During the biological aging, caffeic acid, catechin, gallic acid and malvidin-3-O-glucoside were the most abundant polyphenolics in the rosé wines. The phenolic compound tyrosol, a fermentation derivative, was found at concentrations up to 98.07 mg L -1 . The addition of mannoproteins significantly affected the concentrations of organic acids and individual polyphenolic compounds, particularly trans-resveratrol, quercetin, catechin, p-coumaric and hydroxybenzoic acids that showed increased concentrations over time. The positive effects of mannoproteins were mainly observed at the end of the biological aging. The mineral composition remained stable, while potassium was the most abundant mineral in all wines. The observed changes involving these constituents may offer new insights on their behavior during wine aging and on the bioactive and nutritional quality of rosé sparkling wines., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. The effects of oenological agents, gum arabic, and oenological tannin, added at two different stages in the winemaking of rosé sparkling wines (addition to the base wine and to the sparkling wine after disgorging) on evolution of the phytochemical composition during aging on lees and commercial storage were studied for the first time. The sparkling wines were monitored during 12 months of aging on lees (sur lie, with lees) and commercial storage (bottle storage, without lees), in terms of the polyphenolics, color intensity and antioxidant capacity. It was observed that the stage of the addition of oenological agents influenced the changes in phytochemical polyphenols and antioxidant capacity of sparkling wines. The most notable effects on the polyphenolics were observed in the experiment with the addition of oenological agents to the base wine, which significantly increased the concentrations of trans-resveratrol, gallic and ellagic acids, catechin, quercetin, and myricetin. The addition of oenological agents after the disgorging stage had less influence on the phenolics of the sparkling wines. Caffeic acid, trans-caftaric acid, catechin, tyrosol, and gallic acid were the most abundant polyphenolics in rosé sparkling wines. The winemaking practices evaluated in this study comprise an interesting approach to the improvement and/or maintenance of the polyphenolics, according to winemaking practices, besides providing new knowledge on the evolution of rosé sparkling wines. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Tannins and gum arabic are been described as oenological agents, however, are poorly explored in rosé sparkling wines. Many chemical modifications that occur during the winemaking process, especially due to the second in-bottle fermentation and the yeast contact in the case of sparkling wines, can be determinant of authenticity and quality of sparkling wines. Like many other species of trees native to the Brazilian Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest), the Myrtaceae, such as the Red Araza (Psidium cattleianum Sabine), are widely cited as arbuscular mycorrhizal formers. Nevertheless, recent studies show evidence that Myrtaceae from different tropical, subtropical and neotropical ecosystems can also prompt the formation of ectomycorrhizae, indicating that this species' ectomycorrhizal status should be further explored. Because of this, this research effort studied the in vitro interaction between the Red Araza and two ectomycorrhizal fungi isolates, belonging to the Pisolithus microcarpus (D17) and Scleroderma citrinum (UFSC-Sc133) species. An analysis was performed to determine the formation of ectomycorrhizal structures, or lack thereof, and the developmental differences between the in vitro mycorrhized and non-mycorrhized plants. The analysis proved that indeed an ectomycorrhizal association was developed between the Red Araza, and the D17 and UFSC-Sc133 isolates, a fact never before registered in the existing literature. After an in vitro period of 110 days, it was confirmed that the D17 and UFSC-Sc133 isolates formed mycorrhizal colonization of 91.6% and 15.7%, respectively. Furthermore, both isolates also promoted root thickening, and the formation of a fungal mantle and a Hartig net. However, when compared to the Control plants, the fungal isolates did not contribute to an increase in the development of the subject plants, possibly due to the specific experimental conditions used, such as a high humidity environment and high availability of nutrients in the symbiotic substrate.

The search for new safer insecticides has increased in recent agriculture. Botanical compounds such as terpenoids and plant essential oils with insecticidal activity could represent important tools in pest management, and their risk assessment against non-target organisms is necessary since they may serve as a precursor for the synthesis of new insecticide active ingredients. For this study, the acute toxicity and sublethal effects of seven terpenoids and three essential oils with recognized insecticidal activity were evaluated on the predator Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) in laboratory bioassays. Results indicate that these compounds feature relative selectivity to the predator C. externa; however, sublethal effects on reproduction were recorded for some compounds. The phenolic monoterpenoids carvacrol and thymol were more acutely toxic than other terpenoids screened, with LD 50 <20,000 μg/g; however, they were less toxic than natural pyrethrins (toxicity standard) in these bioassays. Sublethal effects on fecundity and fertility were observed for R-(+)-limonene, while oregano oil only affected fecundity. The compounds evaluated here have potential to be used as insecticides and can serve as backbone for future synthesis of selective active ingredients; however, a complete risk assessment to C. externa and other non-target organisms is necessary for their incorporation in future crop protection paradigms.

The bioactivity of a newly registered annonin-based formulation (Anosom® 1 EC) was investigated for use against the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), both singly and mixed with a limonoid-based formulation (Azamax® 1.2 EC) using dietary exposure bioassays. Anosom® 1 EC caused significant mortality in S. frugiperda larvae exposed to treated artificial media, with the activity level dependent on both the concentration and the exposure time. In addition to exhibiting acute toxicity, this formulation (tested at LC 50 ) also caused growth inhibition of S. frugiperda, as demonstrated by a significant reduction in pupal weight and viable larval and pupal phases and an increase in the duration of the larval stage. Moreover, the bioinsecticide caused an increase in the proportion of deformed or defective pupae; these were characterized by the retention of exuvia from the last larval instar. The bioinsecticide (at the previously estimated LC 90 ) was, in a time-dependent manner, equally as toxic as the limonoid-based biopesticide (Azamax® 1.2 EC), which was tested at concentrations recommended for the management of S. frugiperda in Brasil. Moreover, the binary mixture (1/2 LC 90 of Anosom® 1 EC + 1/2 the recommended rate of Azamax® 1.2 EC) of both bioinsecticides caused a similar level of mortality compared to the bioinsecticides tested individually (full concentration), demonstrating an additive effect of these commercial bioinsecticides. In light of these findings, this standardized formulation based on extract of Annona squamosa can constitute a useful component in the framework of S. frugiperda management, mainly in organic food production systems.
